Hello, Sanvers writers/enthusiasts! I need your help.
I don’t know a lot of canon things about Maggie from the show as I didn’t actually watch those seasons… Yeah, sorry. It’s a me problem.
I think I remember that she was disowned by her parents and maybe something about Nebraska?
What I’m looking for is anything that tells me her likes, preferences, dislikes, etc. Hobbies? Favorite color? Favorite food? Siblings? Family stories? Anything canon or widely-accepted fanon that I can use to add depth to the character I created in One Bridge at a Time.
You know, for the sequels. ‘Cuz she’s kinda here to stay. :)
Thank you in advance!

Fic isn't just an act of repair as Henry Jenkins says, but sometimes a safe place in which to tear everything apart. Here to talk about diving into those darker and grittier character spaces is @nerdsbianhokie, a writer who's been captivating Sanvers and Director Sanvers fans for years.
Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started writing fic? Have you written for other fandoms? What are your favorite tropes?
Over two decades ago, I was six years old and reading a new book and had the sudden realization that I wanted to make people feel like that book made me feel. Since then, I've been a writer. The first fic I wrote was before I even knew fanfic was a thing. I was barely thirteen years old and all about CSI and had this vivid idea of a very short scene. I quickly found places where fic was hosted, and began to read and post.
Since then, I've moved through fandoms, sometimes staying for a time, like with Bering and Wells, other times only lingering for a brief moment. I watched Supergirl between season 1 and two, after learning that Maggie Sawyer, one of my favorite comic book characters (one of the first openly lesbian characters in mainstream comics? out before the comic code was done away with? what's not to love) was joining the show. I didn't watch beyond the first few episodes of season 3, but the characters have a hold of me and aren't letting go.
Since my time in the Bering and Wells fandom, angst and aus have been my favorite spaces to play in. Exploring darker spaces in the safety of fiction has always been a draw of writing to me, and the Supergirl characters can fit so well in so many different universes.
What were your inspirations for this particular story? What was it about this/these ships that grabbed you?
This fic started as a tumblr post by magicmumu2 about Alex and Maggie reuniting years later because their kids keep getting in trouble at school. I then made it sad by giving Alex a recently dead wife.
I really fell into the idea that Alex and Maggie did move on after their breakup, but then remeet at a later point in their lives. When thinking on how Alex might move on in a way I find interesting, I landed on my beloved Lucy Lane. My ultimate ship for Supergirl is Director Sanvers, so I've written all combinations of Alex, Maggie, and Lucy over the years, but the idea that Alex was happy with Lucy, but then lost Lucy and found Maggie again while still mourning, really pulled me in
Has the time spent away from your story changed your outlook or approach to any of the storylines or themes? Have you had any new inspirations or breakthroughs/revelations in the meantime?
The time away hasn't really changed much, as I've been distracted by so many other fics, but having new eyes on it has really helped me figure out some things I was stuck on that kept me from working on it more.
Any advice for new or aspiring fic writers?
Write. The best thing you can do is get ink on the paper. Writing is an art that needs to be practiced just like any other. As somebody with a degree in creative writing, I think the time I've spent writing and the amount of writing I've done has, cumulatively, done more for me than all the classes I took.
If you were going to promote this fic with a single line, what would it be?
A deep look into grief and healing, mourning and love.
If you’ve already posted some of your work, please provide a link.
This is the original post, with the prompt and my initial addition.
I have also posted two separate fics that aren't part of this one but are in the universe as I worked out how Alex and Lucy got together and their family dynamic.

Fan Fiction: Still My Maggie
Summary: What happens when after Crisis of Infinite Earths Alex finds out that in this new world Maggie has a kid. Read it on AO3
Opening her eyes after Jonn restored her memories was more challenging that she imagined. The whirlwind of emotions and images filling her brain almost making Alex nauseous. She pushed the feeling down and focused on what was important. The knowledge that who she thought was a respectable and outstanding men, was in fact a villain.
It was later, when she was alone in her apartment, that she let herself explore the other memories. The memories that had nothing to do with her job, or her sister, or the fight between good and evil. She allowed herself to get lost on the memory of dimples and soft brown eyes.
It was hard to reconcile both sets of memories. One set from this new world. One where she has been with Kelly forever, where she never meet Maggie, and the relationship that helped discover herself didn’t exist. And then, all the feelings, the heightened emotions of what Maggie meant to her rushing back all at once, making her weak in the knees again.
She loved Kelly, she did. But she had never stopped loving Maggie, she never would. She was her first love after all. And even though time had passed and the pain of losing her had lessened. Even though she had learned to live without her and the love she had for her had started to hurt less, to consume her less. It was still always there.
And now. Here she was. In a whole new world. A world where until a few hours before, Maggie didn’t exist for her. But now the memories were back, Alex feelings for Maggie were back in full force. She couldn’t stop herself from wondering where Maggie was. what had she made of herself in this new world.
She tried to fight against her impulses. Remind herself that it didn’t matter anymore. She had left Maggie. They were over. She hadn’t seen Maggie in months and was finally over her, building a life with someone new. Just because she found out about the fact the world she used to know, no longer existed, didn’t mean she had to undo all the effort she had made to forget the heartbreak of leaving Maggie. She told herself this over and over, until she got to the DEO the next morning and the temptation was just too great.
I just want to make sure she is ok. Alex told herself while she put Maggie's information on the DEO search system. The hit was almost instant. In front of the giant screen in front of her she saw a picture of Maggie. Her Maggie, just as she remembered her.
Maggie was a detective at the Gotham Police Department. That unnerved Alex, she knew how dangerous Gotham was. But at least she was okay. She still existed in this world and was living a full happy life, probably. It also explained why they hadn’t meet in this timeline.
Alex remembered her Maggie telling her about how when she transferred to National City she also had an offer from the Gotham Police Department, but at the end had decided against it. Not in this world, it seems.
She could have left it at that. But more information was just a keystroke away. And Alex just wasn’t strong enough to stop. When the full information folder opened, Alex did feel a hint of guilt. For invading her ex privacy like that. But it was too late. She had opened the file and her eyes had been instantly drawn to a small tidbit of information. There, in bold black letters, clear as day, Alex could read:
Known Family: Daughter Jaime Sawyer.
Alex knows she should feel more shocked. Maybe even angry. It did sound like a cruel joke that after everything that happened to them, now Maggie had a kid. But she didn't feel any of those things. She felt happy. Not because this changed anything between them, but because she could imagine a world, this new world, where Maggie had a family that loved her, even without Alex.
Alex closed the file and went about her day. She had only wanted to make sure Maggie was okay. Nothing else. Or at least that’s what she told herself. The day was a mess, one crisis after another. So she really didn’t have time to dwell on it until she left work. But if she was honest with herself, it was always on the back of her mind. A need to see Maggie slowly growing.
She tried to stop it. It wouldn’t do her any good to want to see her ex, that in this world didn’t even know who she was. Besides, she had Kelly. When weeks later Kara asked Alex to go with her to help Batwoman in Gotham, she didn’t hesitate. She told herself again that it would only be a work related trip. Saving the world business as usual. But the moment she stepped down from her motorcycle in the streets of Gotham, Alex realized she was going to try to find Maggie. She had to.
It happened almost immediately. They had barely been in Gotham for a few hours when Kate told them to meet her at a new crime scene. When Alex and Kara arrived, Gotham Police was all over the area.
Alex immediately recognized her. Even though she was several meters away and facing in the other direction. It seemed like Gotham Police didn’t have a windbreaker Maggie’s size either. That made Alex smile.
Time slowed down as soon as Maggie started walking towards her, looking not too happy at having two strangers invading her crime scene.
“Who are you?”
“Kara Danvers, CatCo Magazine.”
Two set of eyes turned to Alex. Clearly expecting her to clarify her role there. She was holding her DEO badge behind her back, already changed to FBI, but she was frozen in place because of Maggie’s proximity. It took a not so subtle kick from Kara to wake Alex up.
“Alex Danvers, FBI.”
Alex felt Maggie’s eyes going over her body, looking her up and down. Not in a sexual way. Just appraising her. Measuring her up. When she was done she sent Alex a smile that made her weak.
“This is my jurisdiction, Danvers.”
Alex smiled. It could be a different world, Maggie may have a kid now. But this was still her Maggie.
“Of course. Lead the way, Sawyer.” Twitter / Patreon /AO3

Sanvers Week: Day 1 - Intimacy.
Alex was sitting up in bed reading This Side Of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Her glasses were on and her reading light was the only light in the room. She glanced at Maggie who was laying on her side, facing Alex, eyes closed as Alex read out loud to her. She wasn’t sure if she was sleeping or awake but Alex continued to quietly read.
“They slipped briskly into an intimacy from which they never recovered.” She read out loud. It made her stop. As she read it, she felt the words resonate in her bones and she slowly slipped into her own thoughts.
Alex was never good at intimacy.
It was the little things. The holding hands. The kisses in public. The cuddling. She never felt comfortable with it.
Until Maggie.
Until Maggie touched her hand from across the table at dinner. Her index finger drawing gentle shapes against her lovers palm and back hand while she spoke.
Alex didn’t mind that.
Until Maggie kissed her goodbye on the sidewalk. And kissed her hello at the precinct. Or kissed her just to kiss her at the bar.
Alex didn’t mind that either.
Until Maggie stayed over that first night. When she wrapped her arms around Alex as they watched a movie and pulled her onto her lap. Or the way she nuzzled her head against Alex’s shoulder as they scrolled through Netflix. Or the way Maggie moved in closed, kissed her gently, stroked her hair, and hugged her girlfriend’s body after they had sex, or after a long day at work.
Alex loved that.
She was starting to get it. It wasn’t the intimacy she that she didn’t like, it was the men. It was always the men.
Their touches weren’t as gentle. Their kisses weren’t as loving. Their cuddling always meant they wanted more.
With Maggie intimacy was natural and soon Alex was the one craving it. She began to reach out her hand, just to feel her girlfriends touch, as they sat at dinner. She tucked Maggie under her arm as they walked side by side. She pulled Maggie in by the collar of her coat for a kiss as they waited for their Uber to arrive. And she became the big spoon every night that Maggie slept over in her bed.
“Hey babe?” She heard Maggie’s voice knock her out of her own thoughts. It was so quiet and faint she almost missed it.
“Yeah.” Alex replied.
“I love you.” Maggie responded causing Alex to close her book, and lay down facing Maggie. She smiled and nuzzled her face into the crook of Maggie’s neck, hugging her tighter against her body as they laid in bed.
“God Mags, I love you too.” Alex whispered. Her hand stroked her hair and she watched Maggie drift off to sleep.
This was intimacy. The intimacy she always wanted.
It was in that moment that Alex Danvers realized that she would never recover from Maggie Sawyer.

Sanvers fanfic post 2x15 "Exodus"
i haven’t written any fics for years so this is a bit rusty. hopefully u all like it ok. i wanted a little more girlfriend-y emotion following alex almost leaving the fuckin planet.
and i also want to see maggie in a position of needing comfort, of not always being the rock…
so. there you have it.
p.s. fuck there might be typos i dunno it’s late
“Girls You Don’t Want To Lose”
Alex is still a bit shaky. And her first thought is:
Okay. So that was terrifying.
But it could have been worse.
She could be hurdling into space right now. Instead it was a more… partial hurdling.
To be honest, Alex is feeling pretty good. Her adrenaline is in overdrive, but she’d be lying if she said that wasn’t part of the draw of working for the DEO. And while Cadmus is AWOL and thinking about the fate of her father makes her stomach drop, Alex saved more then the lives of the aliens onboard the spaceship: she saved her relationship with Kara.
Knowing that everything between the two of them is back to normal, well their normal, is grounding her right now. And that alone helps the stress of the evening wash away her as she enters the DEO.
Following a crushing - literally almost crushing - hug from Kara, Alex starts making her way to the med bay for a standard check. But upon seeing Maggie on the mezzanine, she’s reminded of that other important relationship in her life.
Alex’s dark brown eyes brighten, her heart melts and - oh shit.
Maggie does not look happy….
Her 5’ 3" frame is all ‘arms crossed and business.’ She stops pacing when she catches Alex’s eye and there’s a subtle shake of the head.
Not the reaction Alex is expecting:
I should have offered to stay on the clean up crew...
Sheepishly, and she doesn’t even know why, Alex reroutes from the med bay to meet Maggie at the bottom of the stairs, which the shorter woman is descending with a purpose.
The hard slap of her boots makes Alex cringe and when Maggie reaches the last step they just stare at each other for a few seconds. The unusual tension hangs in the small space between them.
With a conflicted crinkle of the forehead, Alex gives a questioning “hey.”
“You ok?” Maggie’s voice is clipped.
“Yeah, I’m fine. J'onn is just making me stop by…” Alex’s sentence dies off as Maggie’s face remains hard. “Maggie, what’s going -”
“Are you hurt?” Maggie’s eyes are intent, looking for any sign of pain in Alex’s face.
“What? No. No, I’m fine. Just - ”
“Good. Come on. Let’s talk.”
Maggie is walking away, leaving Alex confused and borderline irritated now. She almost looks around to see if anyone else is witnessing this weird display.
“So glad you’re okay Alex. Let me shower you with affection.” She says it to no one.
Look, Alex knows Supergirl saved the day and all, but a girl can still hope for a glad-you’re-not-lightyears-away kiss right?
The childish part of her wants to go complain to Kara and leave Maggie walking, but eventually the grown ass woman (who is ultimately curious as to what the hell is going on ) wins out and she follows her girlfriend, albeit there’s a frustrated groan or two.
They end up in a deserted hallway and Maggie has gone back to pacing.
Alex mirrors the other woman’s crossed arms, only throwing them up in frustration to speak.
“What is going on Maggie? Seriously. I am exhausted and I have no idea why you’re -” Maggie stops in her tracks and she spins around to face her girlfriend.
“- No idea? Really Alex.” Her laugh is devoid of humor.
Walking closer, Alex has gone from frustration to concern. Well, that’s lie. She’s still frustrated. But Maggie is acting beyond uncharacteristic. Maybe Alex did shuttle off to space and this is some strange alternate realty where her girlfriend has the communication skills of a frat boy.
“You could have called me, Danvers!”
“What? Today? Uh, I was kind of busy not ending up as space cargo. Look if you’re pissed you missed the action,” Alex almost laughs, “I can assure you that their will be plenty more to follow. I mean, if Cadmus is involved…”
She starts, but now it’s getting harder to stay irritable because Maggie’s tough exterior is dropping.
“You know how they are… With the violence and the sending people to space and… the like…”
Alex awkwardly drones off because Maggie is giving her that look. The one where her eyebrows knit together and her mouth forms a worried line and damnit, it’s not fair because you can’t be mad when Maggie Sawyer is looking at you like that.
And in two steps Maggie’s pulling her into a tight hug. In another rare show of vulnerability she buries her face in Alex’s shoulder inhaling that inherently Alex-y scent. (And something that distinctly smells like spaceship fuel.)
Alex is caught off guard and can barely return the hug before Maggie is backing away.
“Sweetheart…” Alex tilts her head softly.
Maggie tries to clear hers.
“I … Normally I’m okay with this stuff, ya know?” She smiles half heartedly. “I mean, I know what your job is. And it’s not like mine is exactly risk free.”
“Of course…” It comes out soft, punctuated by Alex brushing a lock of hair from Maggie’s face. “I’m sorry I scared you.”
Maggie gives a humorless laugh.
“I was fucking terrified, Alex.” It’s almost like she still can’t believe Alex is safe and in front of her, like she’s just getting that call from James as he rushes to the DEO himself. Winn didn’t sound very… I just think you should be there. Her heart in her chest, sweaty palms. How fast did she even drive?
Alex is just looking at her with sympathy and vulnerability and Maggie feels weak all over again.
“You told me you needed to find your dad and I knew what that meant. I was completely on board… But risking your life like that? God, Alex. I would have done the same thing, but I was still so angry. I was so angry that you were on that damn ship and I didn’t even know until it was too late… And I know I’m being so incredibly stupid. I feel like one those girls. The ones that would hound me for staying out too late on a case because it’s 'dangerous.’ As if I didn’t know that. As if I couldn’t take care of myself. You can take care of yourself!” Alex nods encouragingly at this. “I should know better than to get this upset.”
Maggie starts to draw back, but Alex isn’t having it.
She gently reaches for Maggie’s arm, pulling her back.
“Hey, hey,” she brings her hand to Maggie’s face so she looks at her. “You can’t be mad at yourself for caring.”
“I know…”
“I’m right here…”
“I know…”
“I would have called if I could have.”
“I know. Like I said, it’s stupid."
"Hey, no, Maggie. Don’t.”
They hold each other’s gaze and Alex’s breaks down some walls with a look so full of tenderness that Maggie would hate how weak it made her if it wasn’t also making her heart explode.
“I’m glad you care.”
“I do care Danvers.”
The moment lingers, but then Alex gets this playful smirk at the corner of her mouth.
“So just to clarify: what I’m really getting is that you’re completely obsessed with me…”
This is it. This callback to that night just a few months ago shakes Maggie out of her mood and she smiles.
“You’re an idiot if you’re just getting that now Danvers.” The agent drapes her arms around Maggie’s neck and their foreheads met.
“I tend to miss those clues.”
Eyes smiling, dimples showing - Maggie laughs,“I’ve noticed.”
Alex returns her smile.
“The next time I’m hurdling off to space I’ll send you a text.”
“Deal. Maybe hold off on the 'next times’ for this week though, okay.”
Instead of responding Alex dips her head, grabbing the other woman’s lips in a kiss.
“Okay,” she whispers against the detective lips.
And while that first kiss is chaste, Maggie doesn’t let her pull away quiet yet. She recaptures her lips, bringing her hands up to cup Alex’s face as they kiss.
This one is tender, but there’s a quiet urgency behind it causing Alex to sigh into Maggie before they break apart.
“No more for this week. Anyway, I’m sort of a fan of being here with you, Mags.”

Ripley’s Believe It or Not
Fandom: Supergirl
Rating: G
Pairing: Alex Danvers/Maggie Sawyer
Summary:  Detective Maggie Sawyer crashes into Doctor Alex Danvers' life with dimples and a puppy in need of saving. And whether Alex believes it or not, with hope for love.
Written for smarterinabsentia for the Sanvers Secret Summer Crush 2019 Event!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maggie burst through the doors of the veterinary hospital, trying to hold the bundle in her arms firmly without squeezing too hard. The blonde behind the desk’s head shot up, giving her a curious look. “I need the vet,” Maggie panted, raising the bundle slightly as if in explanation.
The young woman nodded, immediately picking up the phone and calling for people whose names Maggie didn’t catch. She was too focused on the small form in her arms, trying to ascertain if it was still breathing. Only moments later a door that led further into the building swung open and a woman with short hair hurried out.
Gently, she took the bundle from Maggie. “Do you know what happened?”
“Hit by a car.”
The woman nodded and vanished back into the interior, leaving Maggie standing empty-handed in the lobby and feeling vaguely out of place. A clearing throat pulled her from her thoughts and she turned to find the blonde woman watching her curiously. “Uh, sorry. What do you need from me?”
“Just some basic information for now. Name?”
“Maggie Sawyer.”
“Dog’s name?”
Maggie shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know. She was in the street.”
The blonde nodded. “You said she was hit by a car?” Maggie nodded and the blonde’s eyes narrowed. “Do you know what happened?”
Maggie definitely didn’t miss the unspoken “Did you do the hitting?” She grimaced. “Pick-up truck. There was a—I was—” She paused and let out a frustrated breath, organizing her thoughts. “I’m a detective. I was chasing a guy that ran from a crime scene. He hit the dog.”
The blonde seemed to simultaneously relax and tense up at the statement but she was no longer giving Maggie a suspicious look. “Where was this?”
“Just up the road.” Maggie waved a hand vaguely. “At Lancaster.”
The woman nodded, rapidly typing on a computer. “Do you want to leave contact information for status updates on the dog?”
“Can I just wait here?”
She shrugged. “You can but there’s no telling how long it will be. Vas was taking her straight to the OR for Al—Doctor Danvers but depending on the extent of the damage…”
Maggie nodded and looked at her watch. She needed to get back to the precinct to wrap up this case. She sighed. “Yeah. Can someone call my cell?”
The woman nodded, smiling slightly. “I’ll do it myself. Promise.”

I may have quit watching this show, but I’ll be damned if I quit reading fan fic when some of these authors give me such good stuff!
Pleasanthell’s  “The Weight of the Ground”  is a gem of a story!  Opened up the 1st chapter the other morning just to check it out and then 16 chapters later I was still glued to my screen.
Anyway, it is a well-written and well-paced Maggie Sawyer-centric angsty, post-break up, romantic, procedural.  The dynamic between Maggie and Alex is thoughtfully explored, as well as the other characters that are included. There are loads of feelings and even some good old fashioned detective work.
So, yeah, get to reading if you already haven’t or reread!
