Holiday hotspot rocked by more horror earthquakes hours after state of emergency
Santorini faces fresh tremors merely hours after Greek officials declared a state of emergency due to recent seismic activity. The UK tourist favourite is now on high alert as nearly 15,000 residents have evacuated homes since Sunday following continuous shaking. A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck the waters between Santorini and Amorgos at 8.16pm last night, with a subsequent 4.2-magnitude…

So I said I was gonna shift alarming politics off to my sideblog, but lol, interesting times. One of my geology blorbos is misbehaving. [Edit: Not the geologist. The geology. I have a Thing for Santorini]
I almost didn't click on the clickbait title, but the excitable young geologist gives a more informative explainer than any other I've seen.

Santorini rocked by more earthquakes, state of emergency declared
Several more earthquakes have hit the waters off the Greek island of Santorini just hours after authorities there declared a state of emergency, Greek media reported on Friday.
The emergency measures were declared by the island’s mayor’s office hours after a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the island. It is the strongest tremor felt on Santorini since the first of about 7,700 tremors recorded last week.
Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said additional forces – firefighters, police, coast guard, as well as military and medics – had been sent to Santorini. Schools on the island were also closed and residents were advised to avoid harbours and large crowds indoors.
The measures, under which the army is expected to take a more active role in crisis management, will remain in place until March 3, when Orthodox Christians mark the start of Lent.
While experts say the geological phenomenon, which could last for weeks, exhausted locals continue to flee the island, likening the exodus to an “unofficial mass evacuation.”
Some 11,000 people are estimated to have left the island, which attracts more than 3.4 million tourists annually. Greek authorities have organised extra flights to evacuate people to the mainland, although strong winds on February 5 temporarily complicated the situation by suspending ferry services.
The last major earthquake on Santorini with a magnitude of 7.5 occurred in 1956, killing more than 50 people and causing significant damage. In this regard, the authorities and residents of the island remain vigilant and prepare for a possible worsening of the situation.

More than 21,000 Earthquakes recorded in Santorini - Sarajevo Times
...  The island, which was placed under a state of emergency earlier this month, has been in a state of uncertainty since a series of tremors began.
Many residents have fled the island to the mainland, while hoteliers and others in the hospitality industry are anxiously awaiting the holiday season that begins in April.
The intensity of the tremors has decreased significantly in the past few days, and scientists are hoping for a gradual de-escalation of seismic activity.
However, seismologists cannot rule out the possibility of a major earthquake measuring six or more on the Richter scale, the DPA news agency reported.
A meeting of the government’s crisis council in Santorini said that up to 300 buildings on the edge of the Santorini crater were likely to collapse in the event of a strong earthquake.
The Santorini crater was formed by a volcanic eruption about 3,600 years ago, and its steep rims are now home to houses and hotels.

Greece sends rescue workers to Santorini as island rocked by 200 earthquakes
Greek authorities have sent special forces, rescue teams, tents and drones to the popular tourist destination Santorini after hundreds of seismic tremors hit the island – sparking fears of an imminent larger earthquake. According to the app Earthquake (Σεισμός in its Greek language version) with international coverage (if you live in a seismic country download it right now), as I am writing this at 16:00 there have been 220 earthquakes since midnight, occurring around Santorini and the South Cyclades islands, across the Aegean arc (also known as Hellenic arc). While many scientists say the cause is tectonic and not volcanic, some scientists from Greece and abroad support they are indeed volcanic warnings.
It’s not good news either way…
The earthquakes seem to slowly increase in magnitude with the biggest one at 5.0 R two hours ago. There have been small landfalls reported in Santorini, an island with hilltop built towns.
The last explosion of the Thira (Santorini) volcano occurred in 1950.
The local population is evacuating the island with ships and airplanes just to be sure.

Earthquakes in Santorini, Greece
Currently in Santorini, Greece there have been numerous outbursts of earthquakes. It is calculated to be almost thirty a day, with each being more larger and more frequent. Most being above 4.0 magnitude. It is said that the people have evacuated the island, but that there are stray cats abandoned as the days go on. I only hope for someone to go save the cats as it is heartbreaking to me that they have to stay stranded there, unable to help themselves.
The information I used is linked below.

Santorini, one of Greece’s most iconic destinations, is facing an unprecedented crisis as it has been declared in a state of emergency. The Santorini State of Emergency has heightened fears and uncertainty among locals and travelers alike. The Santorini State of Emergency has left residents and tourists in shock, raising serious concerns about the island's safety and future. Santorini, one of Greece’s most iconic destinations, is facing an unprecedented crisis as it has been declared in a state of emergency. The declaration follows a series of powerful seismic activities that have sent shockwaves of fear through the local population. More than half of Santorini’s residents have already abandoned the island, fearing the possibility of a catastrophic earthquake. Streets that were once bustling with life now stand eerily silent, as uncertainty looms over the island's future. Is Santorini Safe for Tourists Right Now? While some local officials insist that the island remains accessible to visitors, the reality on the ground is far from reassuring. Many businesses have been forced to shut down, and some of Santorini’s iconic narrow streets, known as "sokakia," have been closed due to structural risks. Hotels that once overflowed with guests now stand half-empty, with swimming pools drained of water as a precaution against potential damage. The once-vibrant tourist paradise has taken on a ghostly atmosphere, with empty terraces and abandoned storefronts casting an ominous shadow over the island’s future. What Precautions Should Visitors Take? If you are planning to visit Santorini in 2025, here are some safety precautions you should consider: Stay Informed: Keep up with official updates from the Greek government and local news. Know Emergency Procedures: Familiarize yourself with the nearest evacuation routes and safety measures provided by your accommodation. Follow Local Guidelines: Adhere to any travel advisories or restrictions in place. Purchase Travel Insurance: Ensure you have coverage in case of unexpected disruptions. Are Santorini’s Attractions Open? While some of Santorini’s famous landmarks, including the caldera and sunset spots, remain open, many tourist attractions have been impacted. Some restaurants and shops have closed indefinitely, and areas deemed high-risk for collapses have been sealed off. Visitors may find their itineraries significantly limited, as access to certain areas is restricted for safety reasons. How Are Locals Handling the Situation? The people of Santorini are experiencing one of the most difficult periods in recent history. Fear and uncertainty have driven many families to leave, seeking safety in other parts of Greece. Those who remain are doing their best to navigate the crisis, with businesses struggling to keep operations running under challenging conditions. The island’s once-thriving tourism industry is now at a standstill, with hotels and restaurants suffering major losses. What Does the Future Hold for Santorini’s Tourism? Santorini has long been one of the most sought-after travel destinations in the world, but its future now hangs in the balance. While experts closely monitor the seismic activity, there is no clear timeline for when the island will fully recover. With infrastructure under strain and visitor confidence shaken, it may take years for Santorini’s tourism to return to its former glory. Conclusion: Should You Visit Santorini in 2025? If you are considering a trip to Santorini, it is crucial to weigh the risks. The island is in a state of emergency, with many areas closed, businesses struggling, and a sense of fear lingering among locals. Authorities continue to work diligently to ensure safety, but the uncertainty surrounding further seismic activity cannot be ignored. Until the situation stabilizes, visiting Santorini in 2025 may not be the dream vacation it once was.
