Sakat Chauth is observed on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi during the month of Magh, mainly in northern states of India. Sakat Chauth is dedicated to Goddess Sakat. This fasting is observed by women for the well-being of their children. Krishna Paksha Chathurthi is the day dedicated to Lord Ganesha. On each Krishna Paksha Chathurthi, Sankashti Chathurthi fasting is observed.

On Sakat Chauth, Goddess Sakat is worshipped along with Lord Ganesha seeking happiness and prosperity. This fast is kept without even consuming water. It is also known as Sankat Chauth, Til-Kuta Chauth, Vakratundi Chaturthi and Maghi Chaturthi.

Significance and Katha

The significance of Sakat Chaturthi is drawn from the compassionate nature of Goddess Sakat. There is a temple dedicated to Goddess Sakat in Sakat village of Rajasthan. It is located in Sakat village which is about 60 km from Alwar and 150 km from Jaipur.

The legend of worshipping Lord Ganesha on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi says that when Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha both were contesting to save the Devtaas, Lord Shiva put them on a test. They were asked to complete one revolution around the Earth and whosoever will complete that first, will be given the opportunity. Lord Kartikeya sat on his Mor (Peacock) to do that while Lord Ganesha used his vehicle ‘Chuha’ (Mouse) and circled around his own parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Shiva then said that whosoever will worship you on Chaturthi, they will be blessed with all the physical, material and divine happiness. Their ‘sankat’ (problems) will be quelled.
