Harvey Joins the Sikh Student Coalition
Reposting a story I wrote on cyoc.net here in multiple parts. I’ll credit other authors who contributed as their segments appear. Also, my asks are open if you want to see more changes to Harvey, or you want to transform yourself.
Next Part >
Professor Martinez strut into his classroom on the first day of the new semester, greeted by the disinterested faces of his new students. He taught the university's intro to cultural studies course, known around campus as an easy A. He was well aware that for the past few years student chose his class not because they wanted to learn, but because they wanted to boost their GPA without trying. This year, Dr. Martinez was determined to change that.
"Good morning, everyone" Dr. Martinez addressed. "I am Dr. Martinez, and welcome to Intro to Cultural Studies" he gave a satisfactory nod once a few student left the room, realizing they where in the wrong class. "Now I know a few of you have heard that this class is an easy A, but you will all be pleased to hear that is not the case" a handful of students chuckled with him while others grimaced "In this class you will learn how culture influences an individual's experiences and everyday life. However, before you learn about a culture that is not your own, you should experience it for yourself first hand". Dr. Martinez marched up and down the aisles of desks passing out papers to each student, "You are all receiving your syllabus and first project of the semester. Each of you have been assigned to a cultural organization whose culture is not your own. To complete this project, you must join the organization and complete all of the tasks I have listed on your project form. This will include attending their meetings and participating in their events. I hope you will find this project transformative, and open your mind to accept the rest of the semester's material. You may even make friends and want to become a permanent member. However, I should warn you that this project is worth a large portion of your final grade, so do take it seriously". Dr. Martinez beamed at the betrayed faces of his student who now knew they actually had to earn their grade this semester.
"You may now look at your project form to see what cultural organization you will be joining and the full list of tasks you must complete".
Harvey took a look at his project form. He was assigned to become a member of the university's Sikh Student Coalition. Harvey didn't really know what a Sikh was, a quick search on his phone showed a bunch of Indian guys in turbans. He figured he had no choice but to learn more about them. The organization's meeting was that same day and Harvey headed to the meeting once was class was finished.
Harvey considered himself a typical white young man. He had an average build, clean shaven face, fair skin and sandy blonde hair that he styled into a tall pompadour.
The Sikh Student Coalition's meeting was one of the few times he felt like the odd one in the crowd. The room was full of young Punjabi adults. All of the men, and some but not all of the women, were wearing turbans in various fashions and various vibrant colors. Though else than that they wore typical western clothing. One Sikh came to greet Harvey at the door. He was a large bear of a man who nearly towered over everyone in the room. An orange domalla style turban framed his round face. His kind smile was hidden beneath a twirled up mustache and a curly beard that sprawled down to his chest. He wore flannel, jeans, and boots.
"Hello, I'm Gurpreet Singh. Could you please sign in?" Gurpreet handed Harvey a clipboard with a sign in sheet. "I'm the new student coordinator, my job is to make all of our new members feel welcome. So if you need anything, please ask".
"Yeah, maybe you can help me" Harvey handed back the sign in sheet with his information "I'm here because of my cultural studies project. Someone's suppose to take my attendance or something".
Gurpreet called out to the crowd, " Hey, Mandeep, can you come here for a second?"
A man in a blue suite walked up to them. It looked like it was tailored to fit his slim build. His beard was rather short and had a natural point to it which accented his sharp facial features. He wore aviators and a black tie which matched his black keski style turban. "What's up Man, I'm Mandeep Singh. I'm the president of the organization, it's a pleasure to meet you" Mandeep reached his hand out for a handshake which Harvey accepted. "Say, don't I know you from somewhere?"
Harvey raised a questioning eyebrow before returning a knowing smile, "yeah, weren't we in the same marketing class?" Usually Harvey wouldn't remember anyone from his classes, but it would be hard to forget the only one wearing a turban, especially when he had such great style.
Gurpreet beamed, "This is great Harvey, you already have a friend here!" He turned to Mandeep, "Harvey is here from Dr. Martinez's class".
"Makes sense" Mandeep chuckled. The fact that Harvey was the only white guy in the room was not lost on him, "As president, Dr. Martinez has trusted me to verify that you complete all of the tasks in your project. As long as you follow my instruction I'll make sure you pass. I've got you marked down for attendance, Gurpreet do you have the patka?" Gurpreet pulled out a black cloth.
"Patka?" Harvey asked, "What's that for?"
"Didn't you read the project form? You're required to wear clothing that represents our culture when you're at our meetings. I asked Dr. Martinez if you could just wear one of our club shirts, but he insisted you wear a turban"
"Can't you just say I wore it?" Harvey looked at Mandeep pleadingly, who returned a sympathetic expression.
"I wish I could, but if I'm caught lying to faculty, our organization could get in trouble. I won't force you to wear it, but I don't think you'll pass if you don't".
"Fine" Harvey Sighed, "I'll wear it" Gurpreet Helped Harvey tie his hair into a bun at the top of his head and then tied the cloth around it into a patka.
A group of girls in the room giggled to themselves when they saw Harvey. He felt humiliated! When the meeting started Gurpreet sat next to Harvey, and Mandeep stood at the front of the room to facilitate the meeting. Gurpreet would occasionally clarify words and phrases for Harvey that non-sikhs typically wouldn't know, though Harvey was only half paying attention. Once Mandeep declared that the Meeting was over, Harvey left and bolted to his dorm. He couldn't wait to escape that embarrassment.
That night when Harvey went to the bathroom to brush his teeth, he saw he was still wearing the turban in the mirror. "Oh god" he mumbled to himself. He forgot to take it off when he left the club meeting. So many people must have seen him wearing it when he was running back to his dorm! His face flushed red and he hoped that no one recognized him. Harvey quickly untied the cloth and his hair, but in the mirror he also saw a shadow of facial hair. Strange as he thought he had shaved just that morning. He shrugged and decided he'd just have to shave again tomorrow morning. Tired, he stored the patka in his wardrobe for next week's meeting and went to sleep.

North India somewhat spicy and sweet
Any discussion about North India will not be complete without this saying. A proud home to the most majestic and enchanting mountain range “The Himalayas” in Jammu and Kashmir, which prove the above saying to be true to every single letter. From snowy mountains to sandy desert to green plains, this region’s basket contains fruits from a variety of trees. The list of awesomeness does not end here; North India has many feathers in its cap.
North India is defined as the land, which stretches to about 1.4 million km sq. starting from Jammu and Kashmir to Uttar Pradesh. Technically all these states will come under North Indian umbrella — Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Although the major language in this region is Hindi, a slight change in dialect as per every region is clearly recognized. Kashmiri, Rajasthani, Haryanvi and Punjabi are some other major languages of North India.

Woman has some ultimatums with me, she said she is rolling with hate, she is rolling with racism, and in her rolling with it she is doing some things for race. From the beginning, that’s what she said, but I just wanted something to eat, and I didn’t like the jokes of the Punjabi when I went to get sandwiches, i didn’t like the tawny Muslims who were serving pizza, and some woman is mad at me for the job I have as she is serving food. Ok. Instead of me feeding her anger, AND I AM DOING NOTHING BUT PUTTING US BOTH IN A FISH TANK AS FISH TANK, breaking the ice is “I hate mom and dad”, I would personify White Lady and black nation. When I personify it, woman has some revelations for me. She’s all for black nation, and it’s about the whites having foundation and means to repopulate.
I would see woman’s revelations, just to give you a picture of the draconian negro. He is for the mongoloid being in black nation, and he isn’t given evil eye - he gets the lords release! The mongoloid is in America, and as a draconian let in blackmail he could put dog on the market as clean and unclean laws are against that. Woman has revelations, and it’s she would be with me for the benefit of the white race. She’s sucking my balls and dick for the white race, and it’s love. Negroes can’t really fathom Old Bed, the whites show the sandy foundation, and the negroes just get relief in them keeping things of Old Bed and the white is using the dominate field to employ and set plain. Now, foundation is set and it’s about the white making 25%-30%, to 50% in 100 to 200 years. In it, it’s a black and white nation, and it’s not the question of the founders! You see rule, and I am not making this up off the top of my head - and in it past kings confirms - you see my God as my God!
Woman had some revelations for me, with her makeup, with her pink-shirt, she wants something for the white race, and the negro can only beat the learning curve - a few spicks, and people are being put under the wheel by pharaoh, with the whites being the “most righteous.” That’s what woman wants. She doesn’t want the mongoloid meshing with the white, and she becomes my wife just for mongoloids to reproduce and prosper like the white as blacks take orders and the ones who bear the curve have sentiment of gentry. You can imagine it, so - people are in that cave and she’s for the longevity of the white race as my tree would be planted! Yesterday I saw a negro with a negro woman, and the negro would never get all that close to me - not a bad looking negro. The negro woman got him, and BOOM. Some people see black people and don’t know what’s going on here. I know what’s going on, I understand it, I see it, these people and it’s exposed in “what glasses Future be wearing?”, son of a bitch, you smiling like you are taking about God, I don’t KNOW.
I’m not fond of Katie, she sees a man and smiles like they are talking about God. She smilies like dude said, “my lord and savior is Jesus Christ. I got baptized and I gave myself to the lord.” All that SMILING, so I would know what it takes to make the marriage efficient and you see silence! You don’t want to talk about the confederacy, many would talk about “Paul” and it becomes “he was so nice” and “he was so polite”, you talked baby foods and grownup food. You talked passion and why you shouldn’t have it. “Christian’s shouldn’t show passion.” You talk stoics, how women fight not as men fight.. therefore they both don’t complain. “He was so nice.” ALL THAT SMILING! Now, you would just need your fix and you aren’t getting scraps from a BOY.
If I was talking about this today, I would be talking about that. And, “today” you see but I have had this sentiment and a woman deprives me from sex just to be ignorant just like that negro.. except they are white. Now, that mongoloid can be just like how that white can be, and as he gets his fix whitey is gay or not in office, or BOTH! Don’t get mad at me when a woman sees me and wants me to be this father figure, she wants it where people can’t resist me being a dad to a kid who looks and acts like me, but when she sees that ball cap it’s like fortnight online that can lead to tacos and beer. The mongoloid has political truths, and you shouldn’t be a hater! That’s what “stop Asian hate” means, and in this you are not to even think of the mongoloid who stays in his community and he has NO dealings with whites except when whites go to him.. he’s not a negro. Do you see? Woman has some political truths for me, she would get with me for the longevity of the white race, that negro is that negro, and I plant my tree and it’s about repopulating the white race. It’s not race betrayal, the draconian negro isn’t setting me up with woman right now to where I am not like that guy who just talks at work and not that guy who is spending DOUGH just to talk!
Woman has some ultimatums for me, if she’s getting with me, and I’m getting my fix, I am to see the three options of equality left out, and oven, to look to drive people not black and white, keep a few spicks, out until they don’t leave just to be poked on oven. “Political truths.”

Oh other playlist ask: punk Archie playlist?
By Some Alchemy - a band AU playlist for Archie Abernethy (click for Spotify playlist)
Steppenwolf - Born to Be Wild *** Pal Singh Pal - Maane Mera Sajan Miladay *** Lulu - Shout *** Jimi Hendrix - Fire *** Pentangle - Moon Dog *** Sandy Nelson - Let There Be Drums *** James Brown - Funky Drummer *** The Who - My Generation *** Little Richard - Tutti Frutti *** The Troggs - Wild Thing *** Munawar Sultana and Iqbal Bano - Dholak Geet *** Santana - Soul Sacrifice *** Queen - Modern Times Rock'n'Roll *** Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick *** Pappu Sain & Joora Sain - Dhol *** The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Hammer Song *** Jimi Hendrix - Johnny B. Goode
Comments under the cut:
No lyrics with this because Archie's not really fussed about lyrics, Archie wants to know if there's scope for MAD DRUM SKILLZ and if there is then he's into it. And don't be fooled by the serious Ben Kingsley faceclaim, Archie is mostly a goof, it's just a bit of a nightmare finding good fcs for him.
The ironic thing about the Punjabi punks of Paisley, Archie and (Turkey) Mat Abernethy, is that they didn't become punks until they were in their thirties, because punk hadn't been invented before then. They ended up in the Glasgow care system very young but were lucky enough to be adopted by a couple in the wake of WW2. They were encouraged to be curious about all kinds of music, and I'm going to say maybe their adopted dad had suffered some hearing loss during the war and had other care requirements, so from a young age they were encouraged to be both noisy and caring. Mat went off to America quite young (details tbd), maybe he has an unexpected past as a jazz session musician before punk emerged in the '70s. But that's a whole other playlist.
Archie stayed back in Scotland, caring for their parents, playing the dhol (which Mat never did), and working at the zoo to pay the bills (Archie are you singing Wild Thing to the tigers?). The Punjabi folk he has access to is pretty classical stuff from the '20s and '30s that he gets from people at the Gurdwara, which opened in the 1950s, probably a bit late for Mat to be interested, Mat's a bit wilder, but it's a place Archie attends for the language lessons and musical connections in particular. It's in a tenement flat in Gorbals and he gets the train in from Paisley. But he and his big brother love their local acts, too, they're there cheering local girl Lulu along with everyone else when she performs in Glasgow after having her first big hit with Shout (1964) - Mat even makes the trip back for it. Later on, when mosh pits have been invented, you'll find that Archie and Mat can get a mosh pit going for Lulu.
Other local acts are Bert Jansch (folk hero involved in Pentangle. Archie thinks Moon Dog is kind of hilarious but he likes playing it and pretending to be a Beatnik. In reality he's not cynical enough for the Beats though), and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Archie and Mat grew up seeing Alex Harvey perform all round Glasgow with his various jazz and skiffle outfits (yes, they saw a very early version of the Beatles supporting them) and when he goes glam in the '70s Archie's well into it. For a man who goes bald quite young (and never really gets into fully into practicing Sikhism), Archie does love him some hair metal and glam.
In all, Archie gets into punk even later than his brother, so mostly this playlist is about the drums and about Archie's influences - he's a fan of early rock'n'roll, he knows who its real founders are, and basically he's here to have fun and hit things hard so that people dance. He came of age in the era of the drum solo, and it speaks to his soul, but he knows that the main thing about the drummer is to be the person keeping things on the level, maintaining the beat when all the egos of singers and guitarists are veering all over the place around you. Archie knows that the true meaning of punk is radical kindness. And drumming really, really fast.
#character: archie abernethy#the punjabi punks of paisley#playlists: period appropriate#it's always the drummer

books (in the time of corona)
PART I: ADULT EDITION
Let’s get real--we’re all going fucking insane.
Therefore, I’m recommending some books with which you can kill time. I’m breaking them into categories--the romance category including several subgenres but by and large covering books that focus more heavily on the romance than anything else. These will all be adult books; I’m doing a separate page for YA recommendations.
I’ll be adding to this list as I finish books that I feel belong here.
ROMANCE
A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. A young woman is abandoned by her scoundrel of a boyfriend, only to find a literal medieval knight in shining armor. Pure 80′s cheese, a classic in the time travel subgenre long before Outlander ever happened.
The Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts. Six sexy people, three men and three women in Roberts fashion, travel across time and parallel dimensions to fight an evil vampire and her undead army. Come for three fun romances, stay in particular for the “virgin bookworm queen captures the heart of the formerly evil 1,000 Irish vampire” ship.
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. Rival coworkers who’ve always hated each other compete for the same job--until maybe? They start? Hooking up?
From Lukov with Love by Mariana Zapata. A down on her luck singles figure skater pairs up with the pairs champion she’s always despised... Unless they in fact, in a STUNNING TWIST, do not hate each other?
Pestilence by Laura Thalassa. A BIT ON THE NOSE RIGHT NOW, but I promise that this tale of a hot virgin Horseman of the Apocalypse spreading his plague and the one woman brave enough to fuck him is WORTH IT. As is the sequel, War.
My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran. A literal choose your own adventure novel, but the adventures bodice ripping Regency romance plots!!!
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. A sweet and smart woman on the autism spectrum hires a male escort to teach her to be good at sex. Shit goes DOWN from there.
The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary. She works days; he works nights. She needs a cheap place to stay, and he needs a roommate. So they share a flat and even a bed (sleeping on opposite sides and never at the same time) only communicating through post-it notes throughout the apartment. What could go wrong?
Marriage for One by Ella Maise. She can only get her inheritance if she’s married. Good thing a glacial attorney has offered to marry her out of nowhere, only for paper purposes. What could go wrong???
The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa. Lina is a wedding planner who was left at the altar. Max is the younger brother of the man who left her, and apparently convinced him to do the leaving. What happens when they work together?
Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert. Chloe suffers from a chronic illness, which means that she’s never had a life--and so she compiles a list that will help her get one. On the list? Meaningless sex. Which she won’t have with her building’s superintendent, even though he’s really down to help her cross off all the other items, riiiight?
HISTORICAL FICTION
Passion by Jude Morgan. The dramatic and intense height of Romantic England, told from the perspectives of Caroline Lamb, mistress of Lord Byron; August Leigh, his sister and lover; Mary Shelley; and Fanny Brawne, fiancee of John Keats.
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. Impoverished Griet becomes a maid in the household of the painter Vermeer, becoming his muse after he realizes that she has a natural eye--much to the dismay of his wife.
Snow Flower and The Secret Fan by Lisa See. In nineteenth century China, best friends Lily and Snow Flower follow each other through emotional and cultural revolutions, communicating through the secret language of fans.
The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George. Cleopatra recounts her life story, from her earliest memory, through her affairs with Caesar and Antony, and her end.
Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn. In Domitian’s Rome, a Jewish girl rises from the position of lady’s slave to the emperor’s mistress through wiles and scheming.
The Tiger Queens by Stephanie Thornton. The rise and fall of Genghis Khan’s empire, as told through the women of his family--from his favorite wife to a clever daughter-in-law.
At the Water’s Edge by Sara Gruen. A socialite follows her incompetent to Scotland as he struggles to find the Loch Ness Monster and redeem his ancestor’s name--finding herself and questioning her life in the process.
A Year of Ravens. A collection of short stories by different authors, all centering on Boudica’s rebellion through the eyes of her countrymen and her enemies.
Feast of Sorrow by Crystal King. A slave becomes a chef in the treacherous household of a social climber struggling to gain the favor or Caesar August.
Fatal Throne. Six authors tell the stories of Henry VIII’s wives, all from their differing perspectives.
Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The rise and fall of a 1970s rock band is charted through the recollections of its members--as they recall what drove them apart, and in particular the intense relationship between the leader singers.
THRILLERS
The Girl in 6E by A.R. Torre. A woman with murderous impulses locks herself in her apartment to keep the public safe, making a living as a camgirl. She’s left torn between morals and impulse when she begins to suspect that one of her “fans” is dangerous.
Little Deaths by Emma Flint. In 1960s America, a single mother finds her personal life and image called into question when she’s accused of murdering her two young children.
My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. A nurse covers up her beautiful sister’s murders, only to be caught between loyalties when the doctor she loves falls for said sister.
The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine. A plain “nobody” transforms herself in order to steal a high society housewife’s husband, only to deal with more than she bargained for.
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. A woman obsesses over her ex-husband’s new fiancee, leading her to disturbing lengths.
The Other Woman by Sandie Jones. After meeting her ideal man, a woman must contend with his possessive mother, who will do anything to maintain her hold over him.
Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman. A couple on their dream honeymoon find something in the water that will change the course of their life together.
The Au Pair by Emma Rous. The day Seraphine and her twin brother were born, their mother flung herself off a cliff and their nanny disappeared. Decades later, Seraphine discovers a photo taken of her parents just before her mother’s death--with only one baby. The only person who holds the key to the mystery? The au pair.
My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing. A couple keeps the spark alive through murder.
Lock Every Door by Riley Sager. A young woman takes a job apartment-sitting in a high-end Manhattan building. Shortly after she befriends another sitter, the girl goes missing--with everyone else acting like nothing is amiss.
