This is my review of Shahid’s “Kabir Singh”. Before I begin my rant, I want to clear out a few things...

Firstly, I will try my best not to sound biased, but I am a ‘Shahid Kapoor’ fan. I have admired him as an amazing actor who can keep you connected to the screen and mesmerize you. I have loved the fact that he is a genuine person. I have been especially nervous about how people will react to this movie. It always bothered me how people did not often appreciate his movies. Many argue that it might have been because of poorly scripted movies and other such drawbacks, although there are many other ‘poorly scripted movies’ with not so great storylines that happen to do well. Now, I am not saying if they are not good enough they should still be given a positive review, but well that is what it is...

Secondly, *spoiler alerttt* ...

To begin with, the misogynistic moments that kick off the love story between the leading couple is only cute to watch in movies. Kabir Singh portrays a terrible version of “manly” attitude by which I mean having to boss around, breaking rules, showing off power and marking a girl HIS (Bollywood style). In reality, such behaviors are harmful and not acceptable.

Preeti, Kabir’s love interest who is the only attractive woman around the campus, or so it is shown. It is sad how she is shown to be a timid girl who needs a guy by her side. Although it does not begin with the girl opposing the idea of being a subordinate and eventually ends up becoming one. But she still falls in love with her practically-ragging, uncomfortably-obsessive, stalker senior. Also, did I not mention the fact that she did not budge when her boyfriend slapped her and shouted at her! (Someone sure did)

But what helped me recover from that pain was the fact that she fought for her feelings and expressed herself rather than just being a subordinate. In the end, there are more aspects to her character, where she was learning to thrive by herself and eagerly (but unsuccessfully) attempts to push Kabir away for all that had happened. There was certainly a development in her character even if not enough.

Why do I still like this movie?

Apart from having a cute couple, good acting and nice chemistry amongst the cast. I liked the fact that instead of just being another one of these movies, it actually gave us a reason behind it and revealed a rusty bit of reality.

Issues like uncontrollable anger and addiction made a big part of this movie. Shahid presented the character and his issues very well. Kabir had anger-management issues and got suspended from the college during the first few minutes of the movie. His downfall due to alcoholism and drugs caused by his inability to deal with heartbreak was also realistic. Every time he tried to recover and every other time that he relapsed and the way people around him tried to support and help him, or even boycott him because it was too much for them to accept, was all too real. It did make us believe in him again when in the end he confesses to morally-criminal conduct.

It was a bummer when the movie ended with a ‘happily-ever-after’. When the hero got the girl back and everything eventually worked out, it kind of makes the climax and morals of the story look a little dull. But don’t we all crave for that happiness and want the faith to be restored. We can always hope for things to get better and for reality to become beautiful. The end was cute and I had a smile on my face.

My friend told me, “Why are you just looking at the bad side or should I say searching for the bad in this movie?” My answer, “No, I really like this movie, sorry if that was not clear. And no, the paragraph of positive things do not in any way deduct the negative issues of the movie and vice-versa.” All in all, it had a lot to review, abundant to appreciate and plenty to improve.

6वें दिन भी 'कबीर सिंह' की कमाई का जलवा बरकरार, पहुंची 120 करोड़ के पार

चैतन्य भारत न्यूज बॉलीवुड अभिनेता शाहिद कपूर की फिल्म 'कबीर सिंह' बॉक्स ऑफिस पर  ताबड़तोड़ कमाई करने में जुटी हुई है। संदीप वांगा रेड्डी के डायरेक्शन में बनी यह फिल्म अपने रिलीज के पहले दिन से ही बॉक्स ऑफिस पर अच्छा प्रदर्शन कर रही है। फिल्म ने पांच दिन में ही 100 करोड़ का आंकड़ा पार कर लिया था। वहीं 6वें दिन यानी 26 जून को फिल्म ने कुल 15.75 करोड़ रुपयों का बिजनेस किया है। इस तरह बॉक्स ऑफिस पर 'कबीर सिंह' की अब तक की कमाई कुल 120.80 करोड़ रुपए हो गई है।

फिल्म की शानदार कमाई करने के बाद यह अनुमान लगाया जा रहा है कि कबीर सिंह इस हफ्ते 134-135 करोड़ का आंकड़ा भी छू सकती है। बता दें इससे पहले शाहिद कपूर की किसी भी फिल्म ने इतना शानदार बिजनेस नहीं किया है। यह उनके करियर की पहली फिल्म है जिसने बॉक्स ऑफिस पर 100 करोड़ रुपयों से ज्यादा का कारोबार कर लिया है।

It focuses on the title character, an alcoholic surgeon who goes on a self-destructive path after his ex-lover marries someone else. Many of my commenters on my Pardesi Youtube channel encouraged me to do a trailer reaction for Arjun Reddy, and then the drumbeat started, “When are you going to review Arjun Reddy?  It’s a sensation here!”

I am SO glad these people let me know about this film.  I’m not sure I would have gone to see it in the theater otherwise, and I’ve now seen it twice in one week.  It’s that amazing.

This video review is spoiler free.  I recorded it right after I came out of the screening.

  I was gobsmacked by the film.  It is unlike any other Telugu film I’ve ever seen.  This is no Masala film.  It is raw and real, both in the story and the dialogues.  It’s a debut director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, and was made on a shoestring budget.   It’s more like an indie film in many ways, and it is a sensation.

There is an intense romance between two medical students played by Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini.  I have never seen a romance with a seduction by pulling the girl out of anatomy class to draw the muscles and bones on her hand.

Because they are of different castes, here family is adamantly against them.  And then the film becomes very much like a modern Devdas, but it goes places I wasn’t expecting.

Arjun is a complete hot head, and it’s a cautionary tale on how because he cannot control his rage, he loses everything in his life.

The actor, Vijay Deverakonda is amazing in the role.  He was willing to show himself wetting his pants during an overdose, something I can’t imagine pretty much any other Indian actor doing (well, maybe Rajkummar or Nawaz).

The film has intense romantic kissing just as a matter of course.  The freakin’ poster is the kiss.  A politician ripped the poster off buses, and Vijay at the press conference said, “Granpa, chill.”  There’s a real attitude around the film.  It’s not trying to be a film festival art film.  It’s out there, and proud about it.

This is a five star film for me.  It’s that good. It felt realistic in the way that Malayalam films often do.  I felt like the characters were real people and I was seeing inside their lives.  I love a film like Mirchi, too, but there are no machetes or goondas or Masala elements in Arjun Reddy.  Arjun Reddy is intense about his calling as a doctor, about his romance and his friendships.

Rahul Ramakrishna, who plays Arjun’s best friend, was my favorite secondary character of the film.  He gets some of the best comedic lines, too.  He says at one point something like “People don’t understand what it’s like to be your friend.  It’s like I’m pissing all over myself and only I can enjoy the warmth.”  Amazing!

This is a film that is going to stay with me.  I cannot recommend enough that you try to see this film in the theater with a crowd.  I know I wasn’t getting all the wordplay, but people around me were laughing a lot at the dialogues.
