It'll never not bother me that the plot of Borderlands 3 hinges on a DLC they released three months before for Borderlands 2. I firmly believe that DLC should never impact the plot of your game. I don't care if it was free for a month they're charging money for it now, and if someone doesn't know how important that DLC is and plays the game they'll be so fucking confused. Either don't make your plot DLC dependent or give players the dlc for free when they buy the new game.

BORDERLANDS 4- the lore so far

a post compiling all the tidbits from the trailers/descriptions, about everything we know about the story (so far).

wanted to make this post because i may be borderlands' biggest hater, but this new stuff looks really intriguing so far! call me optimistic but i'm definitely interested for now...

(speculation/theorizing involved here. i'm not actually 100% knowledgeable on all the lore but this is just what i'm gathering from it. if it turns out to be true then i called it here first <3)

so here's the timeline we know so far:

-> At the end of Borderlands 3, Elpis is crashing into Pandora. To save everyone (on both places), Lilith flies up and teleports Elpis away. Presumably, just like Sanctuary in BL2, she can't exactly control where it goes.

-> Where it happens to go is the planet of Kairos: a planet hidden in space- it's insinuated that the "protective barrier" surrounding the planet (made of glass?) turned it invisible. Or at least undetectable.

-> This "revealed" Kairos to the universe. Elpis presumably has been pulled in and is now orbiting Kairos.

-> Kairos is currently being controlled by "The Timekeeper." The Timekeeper is not a PERSON, but rather an Eridian Guardian. AKA... A Vault Monster.

-> This is explicitly stated in one of Nyriad's diary entries from BL3. She mentions the Timekeeper by name as an "Eridian Creation," in the likes of Graveward (BL3) and the Traveller (TFTBL). It's also obvious by the images above that it isn't Human- it has robotic limbs, floats, and seemingly harnesses/is connected to the Vault Gate behind it.

-> The Timekeeper is described as a dictator obsessed with Perfect Order, furthering the idea that this hidden planet was in a perfect state of "Order," with only the Timekeeper + its "synthetic" army. Remnants of whatever Eridian Society created it, and hid it away, for whatever reason.

-> Elpis crashing into Kairos, and breaking the barrier, has enraged the Timekeeper, who's planet is now visible to the galaxy. And a big hole in the ceiling of it's house. Damn.

-> It's confirmed there's a few years' time-skip between the crashing of Elpis and the start of the game. The SCAVS of Elpis (and bandits of Pandora most likely, however they hitched a ride) have now made their way to the surface of Kairos and are causing mayhem. They seem way more mechanical in nature than the last time we saw Elpis, but similar vibes. Very tech-y, robotic, etc. -> These bandits become their own faction known as "The Rippers," and their leader is a robot lady named Callis.

-> Queen Callis is shown in the trailer to ALSO be not human (robot? something else? Kairos's influence, or Elpis tech? who knows.) But apparently she also has the power to control the bandits, through their masks. She puts the masks on them and their eyes turn red, matching hers. So it's possible she's just mind controlling every bandit.

-> Anyways, it's a "robo-bandit" VS. "synthetic Eridian" civil war deal. The Timekeeper appears to be attempting to subjugate the entire planet again, especially based on all the "break free" wording of the teaser descriptions. Whether you're fighting WITH Callis's army or just as a third party, it appears the Vault Hunters are from Elpis (or, were on Elpis when it got yoinked at the very least). And they're trying to escape this planet. -> The last description does mention "cast of characters, new AND old," so it remains to be seen in what capacity old characters are involved. It IS a time-skip, so maybe Sanctuary finally tracked down Lilith's whereabouts and she's stranded on Elpis. Maybe Ava is an adult now and leading the Crimson Raiders. Maybe the whole "Timekeeper" business means there will be timeline fuckery- pulling alternate timeline versions of old characters, bringing back dead ones, who knows.

-> (I'M PERSONALLY INCLINED TO BELIEVE that Sasha and Fiona will also play a role in this game? Because New Tales called specific attention to Sasha being in a different part of the galaxy unable to be found (hidden planet? wink wink?), and Fiona's talk of Sasha's anahatium pocketwatch, with the etched phrase "TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS.")

-> (Who knows if that is true, or what that really means. Just speculation here. I miss Sasha and Fiona, and they've been hyped up with BL3 Echoes, New Tales stuff, and even their own book. Give us the two best Borderlands characters back please.)

-> Last thing as an aside, it DOES show that we will be getting a Siren VH again. So she either needs to have Steele's unknown power, the Leech power, or some secret third thing. Maybe she isn't a real siren at all. The device on her arm could either be a way to REPLICATE a siren's power (like Anu, making her a "fake siren") or possibly as a way to enhance/contain the Leech power, like Tyreen alludes to in BL3. Interested to find out.

TLDR: we're finally getting the Eridian War plotline! They didn't forget guys! AND it directly involves Elpis, like the game where we first learned about the Eridian War!

Synthetic "Eridian" army led by a Vault Guardian/Monster, THE TIMEKEEPER, vs. the robotic bandit army, the Rippers, led by QUEEN CALLIS. Time-skip again (intrigued to see how long this time. It's canonically been at LEAST two years since BL3.) New + Old characters. New Eridian planet, like Nekrotafeyo. 4 New VH's, either FROM Elpis, or wayward travelers who accidentally crashed onto Kairos.

"Huh, never thought this ship would have a bar." In hindsight that would be obvious. But for one in space? Definitely not.

Everyone calls it Moxxi's nightclub, though its more of a bar than anything else. Can you really call it a nightclub if your always in space?

Sanctuary III, the home of the Crimson Raiders. Where legendary people are formed to hunt vaults. Though you know that already.

The room gave off a radiant pink, a splash of colour from the rest of the ship. And in the middle stood who you assumed to be the woman herself, Mad Moxxi.

"Well hey Sugar. Dont think I've seen you around here." Her voice sounds like honey, a mix of courteousness and flirtiness enough to give some drunk people the wrong idea.

"Just came from Promethea actually."

"Promethea? Hope the corpo war hasn't been to hard on ya."

"Eh I'm doing alright. They raised the rent at my apartment because Atlas needed to get everyone out of the city. I don't blame him but. To be honest most of us have nowhere to go."

This became a regular occurance, after your job on Promethea you head to Moxxi's for a quick drink or a bite to eat before heading to your dorm.

[A few months later]

"Hey Moxxi, guess who finally managed to get enough funds to live back on Promethea!"

You ran into the bar, giddy with excitement.

"Aww, really? I'm going to miss you sugar."

Her makeup never changed since you first met. Still wearing the ruined mascara, intentional or not.

"Dont worry Mox. I'll visit you!" You chucked.

How about one last drink? On the house~"

She smiled, she always wanted to give you free drinks. But every time you denied her.

'Well. I- why not?" You shrug.

Looking around you notice that nobody else is around.

"You closing up early? Wait, what time is it?"

"Well after closing time, but I decided to let you in." She said while trying to get rid of a damn stain on her dress.

"Shit. Sorry-"

"Dont be, now bottoms up sugar~"

She poured the drink up to your lips. It felt kind of awkward but you went along with it for now.

It tasted familiar, like her finest blend but a little bit saltier? Maybe you're just imagining things.

"Thanks." She put it down after.

"Need some help back there? Like tidying up or something?"

"You're too kind~, mind checking the tables for any leftover drinks or anything. I say people just leave their drinks like its nothing." She sighed.

"Sure thing."

You stand up, almost wobbling a bit. Did she give you an extra strong version or something?

You look at every table, they all seem to be clear. Apart from one of the booths at the back, a few glasses lay there.

You pick them up and head back to her. Placing them on the table.

"Thanks doll."

"Oof. Yeah. I think im going to go now. I'm beat." You sit back down on one of the stools, placing a hand on your forehead.

"Jeez, how strong is this stuff?"

"Its a special blend."

"It sure is..."

"Oh sugar~, can't keep you're head on straight can you?"

The world around you slipped, as you fell on the floor.

"Dont worry. Momma Moxxi will take very good care of you. Just sleep. Kitten..."

You revealed Moxxi's true voice, a sickening sap that once she gets you into her clutches, she's never letting you go...

(I actually have the moxxi finest blend bottle. But I've never drank alcohol before and I don't think that whiskey is a good thing to try first 😅)

Okay more thoughts on the new Borderlands trailer but this is more....generalized, less about the trailer itself. The trailer just kinda. Reminded me of it.

I do not like the new art style.

It started with BL3 and I just. Generally don't like it.

It's not ALL bad, I'll say that, but just.

It doesn't FEEL like Borderlands. It doesn't have that same charm. It doesn't draw me in the way it used to.

There's a whole lot about it that I can't put into words, which I really wish I could.

One thing I CAN put into words though is that, in so many cases and areas, it feels like they added detail specifically for the sake of adding detail. Like a "hey look what we can do!!!" type thing. So much of that detail does no service to the appearance, and some of it actually makes it WORSE.

I can't tell you how many times I've had difficulties seeing enemies or allies or other such things because it gets lost in all the visual noise.

The more detailed and fluid movement is great, especially in cutscenes, same with the more....fluid and natural feeling facial expressions. When I played the Fight For Sanctuary DLC in 2 I noticed how much BETTER the animation was, ESPECIALLY in the cutscenes. It looked good!!!

But. Dear god. Then you get to 3 and it's just like. Please. Simplify some of this shit. So much of this detail is unnecessary and is just unappealing to look at in several cases.

So me and my boyfriend made a Arcane x borderlands au Where Caitlyn, Maddie Jinx and Vi get dropped into a post borderlands 3 Universe.

BORDERLANDS CHARACTER OF THE DAY #4!!!!!!

Today's Borderlands chatarcter is *drumroll*

CLAPTRAP!!

That's right, today's character is the robot himself, Claptrap! This little robot is the first character you meet in each Borderlands game, making him the obvious choice for best NPC. His jokes are pretty funny, and his design is, while simple, really good! He can give you side quests, and in Borderlands 2, even give you high-fives!

hi there -- i had complimented you work before, but after finding myself in another borderlands kick, ive now reread WAW (for the fourth time, at least in it entirely. ive read my favorite snippets all the time) but this story is just so important to me - i love it, the lore you add is so masterful as well as your deciption of abuse. its never linear, there's often not "the perfect victim." I can't think of many stories that display this in such a way I feel seen then .... a borderlands fic i read almost 5 years ago. truly i can't wait to see what work you do in the future (signed someone that's read cost of canon despite someone who is not into spiderverse)

rereading it has been developing an au of an au -- au-ception right? something along the lines of timothy sending angel to sanctuary when tania had attacked at ellies (maybe even have her take nyx and crake, i often forget they aren't canon and their deaths hit so hard to this day)

Ahaha was it the movie that put you back in the BL kick? I've not seen it, but I've seen the disaster vibes it's giving off. Thank you. When I reflect on WAW, what I'm most proud of (and what I enjoyed the most) is the lore, the world-building, and the OCs.

Something that I can’t wrap my head around is that GearBox cut Maya’s funeral from the game and Ava remorse. Instead they just have her blame Lilith for the death and the game agrees with her.

It’s like they wanted the audience to hate the character. I don’t get what Gearbox was even thinking. Maya’s death only had an impact on the story and not the characters like Roland’s did. They barely bring up her death in the game despite her being a playerable character in the 2nd game.

For Roland’s death they took it seriously. They didn’t add cringe jokes or the villain editing a shitty video of his death to post online. His death had weight on everyone in sanctuary. It was important to the story and the characters.

For Maya though, it was just ‘she died, here’s a cringe edited video of her death lol. Anyway, go to this planet now and progress the story.’ This was a fan favorite character and they killed her off as if she was a side character. As if she was nothing but a means to give Ava siren powers. It’s terrible.

The fact that gearbox flat out scrapped the funeral for Maya is insane. The fact that they seemed to think Lilith was the blame for the death, when Ava literally broke orders and went into the vault, which lead to the twins killing Maya is insane. The fact that they seem to think people would like this version of Ava and even had her become the leader of the crimson raiders is insane.

Borderlands 3 in honestly has one of the worst written stories in all of gaming.

Something I've been wanting to draw for a long time: title cards for Skies if she appeared in the games. From top to bottom, Borderlands 2, Tales From the Borderlands, Commander Lilith DLC, and Borderlands 3. If you're interested in when her cards would appear in game, check out under the cut!

Borderlands 2: Skies is a boss fight, the third to final boss before Jack and the Warrior. When the player enters the Vault, Skies is waiting for them at the start of the tunnel and says ‘Sup.’ *Title card*.

Tales From the Borderlands: When Rhys and Vaughn get separated from Sasha and Fiona during the moonshots from Helios, and they’re waiting in the desert for Yvette to send them a car, they get attacked by a pair of skags. But thankfully, a mysterious one-armed person sweeps in and saves them, killing the skags. Turns out this person is a female Psycho, or at least that’s what she looks like. But when she takes off her mask, Jack recognizes her as Skies, and Rhys exclaims, “Skies the Bodyguard?” To which Skies replies, “Ex-bodyguard.” *Title card*.

Commander Lilith DLC: After Sanctuary has been taken by Colonel Hector, and Mordecai has been poisoned by Hector’s gas, the Crimson Raiders are in The Backburner, discussing their next moves when Skies walks in. She sees Mordecai, sick and unconscious on a couch and says, “bummer.” *Title card*.

Borderlands 3: When the player is helping Zer0 fight Maliwan soldiers to get to a weapons depot, a smaller ship flies in, taking out the Maliwan drop ships with ease. A woman jumps out of the small ship and swiftly takes out the surrounding soldiers with her assault rifle. A Pyrotech Heavy tries to attack her, but she dodges his flamethrower and smashes her bladed fist through his helmet and right into his face. Blood sprays out around her as she smirks wildly. *Title card*.

Ava

Was an orphan at one point (like in canon) and has been with Maya and Krieg for about 3 years.

They bought her a switch when she first moved in with them and has been glued to the thing since.

Going though her awkward emo/punk phase.

Like most teenagers, she's a bit insecure

Is pretty familiar with Gaige and Angel but doesn't hang with them due to being in different grades.

Maya

Librarian at the Sanctuary City Public Library.

Met her husband Krieg during her last year in college and shortly after he escaped Hyperion's lab/prison.

Owns a pet beetle named Specs.

Prior to Ava, Maya has sheltered a few foster kids and while most have moved on in their lives, she'll still see them as family.

Is now 5 months pregnant with her and Krieg's biological child Salem.

Krieg

Was actually one of the victims of Jack's inhumane experiments before he escaped.

Spent a few years in a mental hospital due to his crippling psychosis.

Maya ended up visiting him every day and the two remained pretty close.

Due to traumatic amnesia, he doesn't remember a lot about his past.

He can speak normally (most of the time) though he does burst out weird, nonsensical sentences from time to time.

Keeps the mask on due to being self-conscious about his disfigured face (Maya is the only one who has seen it)

Dunkino

Acts as a service dog for Krieg.

Not much on him, he's just happy to be here.

Tunnel Vision

Pairing: Troy Calypso x Siren Vault Hunter Reader

Genre/warnings: Slight Borderlands 3 spoilers, angst to fluff, swearing, violence, mutual comfort, slightly out of character, not proof.-read 😭

Summary: After finally making your way to one of the last vaults, you now have to face one of your biggest challenges yet. But luckily this “challenge” has a weak spot for you, that even he doesn’t realize.

Two steps onto the Sanctuary’s cold metal floors, just like the good days. Unfortunately, this time on the ship had a good possibility of being your last. You head up to the deck, Lilith insists to say your goodbyes to the others and you do so. Claptrap, Ava, Tannis, even Marcus. They all knew what could happen, but you’re a vault hunter, if they really didn’t trust you going to hells door, they would’ve said so.

Back in the day, before they tried to become gods, you were extremely close to the Calypso Twins, especially Troy. You two bonded over the fact that you were extremely strong and as cold as you appeared to many, to him you were a shining star in his lonely world. His sister never really got along with him then, always avoided the “parasite”, but you gave him a safe space. You two didn’t need anything else except each other to survive. That was until you disappeared, no one knew why except for you. Something happened, after visiting a nearby graveyard you found a glowing crystalline structure coming from the only living tree. Curious, you went up to it, lo and behold it turned you into a monster. Once you made contact with the glowing crystal, the light it sourced flowed through your veins. You didn’t know what happened but you looked different. You were still you, of course, but you felt odd. You felt as though you needed to get away from this nothingness planet and as unfortunate as it was the shitty people who inhabited it. All you did was leave a note at the Calypso’s door, and leave. You felt only a slight hint of remorse, but it when the paper hit the dirtied concrete floor, it was far too late to turn back. You forever masked yourself and used as much armor you could, hoping it would ward off the past.

Now, you’re an infamous Vault Hunter- and a newly branded siren. This is what the calling was, you finally made yourself into what you wanted to be. The crash came when the twins made their way back into your life, by stealing Lilith’s. She was alive, thank the stars, but they took her siren powers, and to her they were everything. They didn’t realize who you were, or at least you thought. When being confronted by the COV’s minions you couldn’t help but notice an unfamiliar glint in Troy’s eyes. One that was broken, frustrated, yet somehow longing still. You feel as though he knew it was you all along. This broke you, it didn’t seem like it, but you’d never forget.

Days passed, weeks felt like eternity, and you’re now going on the hunt to kill the twins who found you. Ironic, isn’t it? This hurt, as much as it shouldn’t you can’t help but feel as though you were to blame in all of this. If you didn’t leave, maybe they wouldn’t try to destroy the universe. If you didn’t leave, maybe you could’ve lived a happy life with Troy, as much as Tyreen hated the idea of you two together. You wouldn’t need the money, or the help, just family. You breathe out deeply, exiting the sanctuary for what could be the last time.

Tannis took over their turrets before you and the others race through their barricades to wipe the COV out. Blood, bodies and profanities being thrown around like the best party in pandora. Once you meet up with Ava, she gets you into the base and helps you blow up their statute covering one of the final vault entrances. She salutes you before you part your ways. You slide down the concrete ramp as you’re faced with Try draining Tyreen to power the laser that’s currently trying to destroy the moon.

“Well, well, well, look what we got here! Finally, the vault thief in the flesh. You’re just in time, Tyreens tied up a bit to watch your agonizing demise!” Your hand hovers over your weapon “Troy, we don’t have to do this.” He scoffs “oh yeah, why not?” He starts to circle you, like a hungry vulture “This isn’t you, and while you may not believe me, I understand. You just need to stop this, take this one chance.” He groans and rolls his eyes at the statement “There is nothing to understand besides the fact that we’re gonna become gods, and you’re gonna be a pile of mush!” He lunges at you before you run past him “God, why won’t you just die, Vault Theif!” You groan and take off your mask, though you’re tattered and bruised, he could never forget a face like yours. “…You-You’re alive? I thought- No, why?!” He stands in place petrified before his knees buckle under him and he drops. You slowly walk over to him as he stares at your feet in dispair before he whispers “…Why did you leave?” You sit down in front of him with the same soulless expression on your face “I’m not sure, I think I just felt like- like I needed a purpose. I get it if you’re angry with me.” You take your weapons off, and lay them to the side “I would be too, Troy.” The way his name rolls off your tongue like honey opens his heart more. “I’m.. I’m not sure how to feel.” His eyes blink around, still avoiding you. You carefully put a hand out and he looks up “Come with me Troy, please.” His brows furrow “It’s too late, no matter what I do I’m gonna end up a god without you, or in prison without you. I hate how much you dictate my decisions, but I can’t let you go again.” He holds your hand and grips it gently “I won’t let anything happen to you, Troy. Please, just trust me.” You rub the back of his hand with your thumb while you stand up. “I know you don’t have to forgive me for what I did, but if you could just take this chance to start anew, maybe we can continue what we had… except maybe a little cooler.” You smile a little at the end, trying to nudge in a bit of humor. He stands, legs almost failing him again, before he stands tall. “God, will you two shut the hell up?! I’m almost dead here, but I’d rather die than watch you two make-out! Besides, what happened to you Troy? She’s the reason we’re so powerful, and you’re just gonna forgive her and ditch me?! What the hell man!” He huffs “Tyreen, I know we want power but let’s just think for one second, what if we weren’t the only beings ever? Wouldn’t endless life, power, and wealth get boring after a while?” “I-“ He paces around “-Ya know what, I don’t even care what your answer is, Ty, I know what I finally want now. Not what you wanted me to bandwagon, what I want” Tyreen’s eyes are widened with shock before he turns back to me “I know it’s been like a good couple of years, but the way I feel about you- about us it hasn’t changed. And though I didn’t tell you, I want you to spend whatever fucked-up future we have with me. Vault Thief or not, I just want you by my side again.” He grabs your hands, “And maybe a slight make-out sesh on the side?” He tilts his head smiling sinfully, “Don’t push your luck, Troy” he rolls his eyes before resting his forehead against yours, you can faintly hear Tyreen’s groans of disgust in the background. “Give it some thought, yeah?” Your arms make your way to his shoulders, while his arms pull you in closer. Finally a moment of pure euphoria, Troy’s lips finally link with yours, you can almost feel as though both of your powers are doing the same thing. They’re not combining, but they’re blending and becoming stronger with every wave of guilt that leaves your shoulders. He smiles into the kiss, right before you hear three familiar Sanctuary-based voices;

“What the fuck?!”
