~Sexypink~ Barbadian Artist Annalee Davis of Fresh Milk has a new venture. Do check it out and read her eloquent words on Sour Grass.
....................................................
This morning, as I share the new Sour Grass website with you all, so beautifully presented by the Trinidad-based master designer, Kriston Chen, I reflect on the many twists and turns in my art career over the past three decades. The decision to return to and remain in the Caribbean, while sometimes fraught with doubt, has always been the right one for me in spite of the endless challenges of working in one of the most debt-ridden regions in the world where cultural workers may feel like orphans given the still limiting infrastructural support for contemporary visual artists.
Many years of bonding with peers - fellow artists, tutors, students, curators, collectors, co-activists, institutions, and conspirators - of sharing values and believing in the notion and immense value of our Caribbean civilization, the bedrock from which our creative offerings emanate and which we choose to nurture and foster, has enlarged my understanding of who we are beyond imagination. One of the most generative and generous collaborations over the past ten years has been with my friend and fellow soldier in the trenches- Holly Bynoe.
Since sharing ARC magazine's Issue III in August 2011 at the launch of the Fresh Milk Art Platform here in Barbados, we have continued to envision projects together including Caribbean Linked and Tilting Axis. Our love for this region and its extraordinarily talented artists has been both anchor and kite.As the layers of economic, health, and environmental crises continue to build in this profoundly challenging moment we may find ourselves languishing in, Holly and I cherish and are committed to the creativity and resiliencies that run throughout the archipelago. I believe that this is a time where flourishing can be mutual for us both and for all those whom we choose to work with.
As we launch Sour Grass's website today, I'd like to mention our first two multi-year collaborations and to really feel joyful because of the beautiful human beings and institutions who want to walk this road with us. The way people reveal themselves through collaborations is telling and Holly and I have been fortunate to find some incredible souls who we respect and are excited to continue to work together with.(i) Shout out to Kunstinstituut Melly, especially Sofia Hernandez Chong Cuy and Rosa de Graaf who are trusting us to bring artists from the Caribbean to showcase at their Rotterdam-based contemporary space over the next few years, kicking off with Bathed in Sacred Fire! –a solo show of Trinidad-based Jamaican artist, Jasmine Thomas-Girvan!(ii) Sour Grass is one of nine Caribbean galleries and agencies presenting at the inaugural Atlantic World Art Fair initiated by the brave Lisa Howie of Black Pony Gallery (Bermuda) on Artsy.
This annual partnership is dedicated to growing the cultural capital of the Caribbean with the goal of elevating the visual arts within our community to the wider world. We are thrilled to be showcasing the works of nine artists from across this region including Franz Caba (Dominican Republic) ° Ronald Cyrille (Dominica/Guadeloupe) ° Deborah Jack (St. Martin/USA) ° Abigail Hadeed (Trinidad & Tobago) ° Katherine Kennedy (Barbados) ° Lisandro Suriel (St. Martin) ° Joiri Minaya (Dominican Republic/USA) ° Eliazar Ortiz (Dominican Republic) ° Samuel Sarmiento (Venezuela/Aruba). We go live June 1st for three weeks so keep an eye out!Our work is an active gift of sisterhood, community, and love, rich with the fibre of collective imaginations and our ancestors. Check us out! https://sour-grass.com/

Deported families at the border say they're shocked and confused He and his son were just deported. Already, he’s trying to figure out how to cross into the US again. “I’m going to try to go back to the United States, because things are more difficult in Guatemala,” he says. “I have five children I have to support.” Like many of the migrants who CNN has spoken with in recent days on the border, Cocoy seems stunned by the way US immigration authorities treated him. His voice cracks as he describes how swiftly he was kicked out of the country where he’d hoped to find work to support his family. “They didn’t let us through,” he says, “and I have to get through.” While officials are letting unaccompanied minors into the United States to make their case for asylum, and letting some families deemed vulnerable cross, too, the Biden administration has said most adults and families are being expelled under the pandemic public health restrictions that remain in place along the border. Some of those who are sent to Mexico are likely trying to cross again — one factor that could be making the numbers of migrants apprehended at the border shoot up. A few feet away from Cocoy, Samuel Antonio Sarmiento says he’s also determined to go back across the border with his son and try again. He says the Biden administration’s repeated comments that now is not the time for migrants to travel to the United States aren’t convincing. “I had to migrate because I was assaulted. … The problem is he (President Joe Biden) doesn’t know the situation you’re in,” Sarmiento says. “I’d rather die here than return to Honduras.” Some deportees say they’re shocked and heartbroken Some migrants tell CNN they’re shaken and still trying to sort out their next steps. Many are angry their journey into the US was cut short, worried because they have no place to stay in Mexico and confused because they thought things had changed since President Donald Trump left the White House. “They (US border authorities) treated us very badly. They didn’t even give us the chance to speak,” says Ordelina de Leon Lopez. If she’d had a chance to make her case, de Leon says she would have told authorities that one of her daughters had been kidnapped in Guatemala and she fled the country after facing threats. “The police there never helped me and I’m a single mother. I have three children to take care of,” she adds. “I came here thinking that they were going to give me support. But we were surprised to find out, no, they rejected us.” Belinda de Dios Lopez says she’s shaking and hasn’t eaten in the days since her deportation because she has no money to buy food. “I came because Mr. Biden said that he was going to give us for 100 days the opportunity to enter,” she says. When informed that Biden actually said he would suspend deportations for 100 days, but had warned would-be migrants not to come to the US, she said the President should show more compassion. “He should be more humanitarian,” she says, “because we are all human and we need more humanity.” Carmen Julia sobs, saying she left Guatemala with her daughter in late February and turned herself into the Border Patrol as soon as she arrived in the United States because she was advised that would improve her chances to be allowed to stay in the US. Instead she says she was fingerprinted and returned to Mexico in less than 12 hours. “I have nothing at home,” she says, “no house, no job, no future.” Others say they’re confused why some were allowed to stay in the US Honduran Bene Ayala says he, his wife and his 7-year-old son were taken into custody by Border Patrol agents and promptly returned to Mexico. But others in a group he was traveling with were allowed to stay — seemingly because their children were younger. “It’s unfair. We can see that 5-year-old children can cross with their parents, and 7-year-olds can’t. But 7-year-olds are still children,” he says. US Customs and Border Protection says it’s still operating under the public health order, known as Title 42, which allows for the removal of immigrants crossing the border to avoid the spread of Covid-19. The agency says migrant parents traveling with children are not exempt from the restrictions, regardless of the child’s age. When asked to clarify how the agency defines who is vulnerable and whether there’s an age limit used in those determinations, a spokesman said he could not provide that kind of detail. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki acknowledged Tuesday that more families are being let into the United States. “It is largely an issue of Mexico not having the capacity to accept some of these families,” she said. “These circumstances are limited. When they come, they are tested, they’re quarantined as needed. But it’s not a reflection or prediction of a change of policy.” Migrant families who are allowed to enter the United States face an uncertain journey. Their cases will make their way through immigration court and a judge ultimately will decide whether they can stay. But for Ayala and other deported migrant families, the future is even murkier. Like many migrants who CNN met at the border, Ayala says he left Honduras after two powerful hurricanes devastated the region last year. And while they expected the journey would not be easy, he says, they thought that once across the Rio Grande, they’d have a chance to stay. “(Hurricane) Eta — plus the pandemic — left us with nothing,” he says. “The situation is just as bad as it was when the storm hit. There’s no improvement. People don’t have work. We want to go to work to help there.” For deported migrants, the future is uncertain Instead, Ayala and other deportees are left wondering what to do. Mexican authorities recently ordered them to leave the area beside the border bridge, moving them to a city park a couple of blocks away. Groups are gathering in makeshift encampments. Area shelters are overwhelmed with the large number of migrants arriving and are turning people away. Other than a small gazebo, there is little shade to protect these migrants from the blistering sun. Food is provided by local churches a couple of times a day. There are no restrooms or additional aid of any type. It’s unclear what help Mexican authorities may offer. On a national level, officials are facing increasing pressure from the Biden administration to step up immigration enforcement. Here in this border state, Ricardo Calderon Macias of the Migrant Institute of Tamaulipas says officials are trying to work with the migrants to see who would prefer to go back to their country and who may be eligible to receive a humanitarian visa to stay in Mexico for 30 days. These migrants say what they fear for the most is their safety — and that their time is running out. Camps along the border in Mexico can be dangerous, and help is in short supply. Just an hour away from here, 16 Guatemalan migrants were killed in January in a massacre that was a devastating reminder of how perilous this journey can be. “The fear is that they’re going to do something to us,” Ayala says. “Here, we have no one.” CNN en Español’s Gustavo Valdés reported from Reynosa. CNN’s Catherine E. Shoichet reported from Arlington, Virginia. Casting Goals: Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 (UK Edition Full Cast)
So I’m still waiting on this UK production of Great Comet and it could be done perfectly. You build hype by having a semi staged concert/workshop at The Other Palace and really hype it up, but make tickets affordable. Then if hype is good have a repeat engagement all the while producers can be building up funds to do a limited West End run. However, they should tone down the sets and not make it as extravagent as it was (They should still keep the tables and audience interacations and the stair case connecting the balcony to the orchestra, but tone down the extravagance if that makes sense) When they tone it down they can cut down on costs and possibly put it in a smaller theatre such as the Garrick or Playhouse. I think that Great Comet works better in a smaller environment and while it did do well at the Imperial on Broadway I think they should go back to a smaller venue like when the show first started out.

PRRD distributing pastillas 'symbolic' of anger vs. corruption
#PHnews: PRRD distributing pastillas 'symbolic' of anger vs. corruption
MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte’s distributing pastillas with rolled up money to 40 suspended immigration officials is “symbolic” of his anger versus corruption, Malacañang said on Tuesday.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made this remark after Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra bared that Duterte summoned erring immigration officials allegedly involved in the so-called “pastillas” bribery scheme and gave them a dressing down in Malacañang on Monday night.
He said Duterte reportedly asked them to eat the pastillas, "but did not insist out of deference to the Secretary of Justice who was also present".
“Nagbigay po ng pangaral ang Presidente na talagang dapat matigil ang korupsyon na ito at yung kaniyang pagbibigay naman ng pastillas, that’s also symbolic of his anger against corruption pero kagaya ng aking sinabi hindi naman po niya pinilit (The President gave a sermon that this corruption should really stop and his giving pastillas, that’s also symbolic of his anger against corruption but as I said he did not force them),” he said in a Palace press briefing.
Roque said none of the 40 suspended immigration officials dared to speak while they were being reprimanded by the President.
“I think the message has been received kasi (because) not a single person, out of the 40 individuals there, uttered a single word,” he added.
He said the giving out of pastillas was simply not “for show”, adding the President was really determined to spend the last two years of his term fighting corruption.
“The President is sending a message, ‘Itigil ang korupsyon. At nung ginawa po niya I think lahat po ng taong gobyerno narinig po ang mensahe (The President is sending a message Stop corruption’. And when he did that, I think all the people in the government heard the message),” he said.
Asked how much amount was rolled in the pastillas, Roque said he never got to find out since none of the erring immigration officials opened them.
Hinawakan lang nilang lahat (We never found out because none of the 40 officials opened the pastillas. They were just holding it),” he said.
He noted the President was “calm” while reprimanding the erring immigration officials since he just finished administering the oath of House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco.
Roque said that because of the separation of powers of the executive and judicial branch of government, the most that Duterte can impose by way of penalty is to remove them from service.
He also said that despite massive corruption within the bureau, BI Commissioner Jaime Morente still “serves at the pleasure of the President”.
“All presidential appointees serve at the pleasure of the President. Pag wala na pong tiwala, hindi na po sila maninilbihan (If he no longer trusts them, they will no longer serve),” he said.
The “pastillas” bribery scam refers to the operation at the airport wherein grease money was rolled up in paper, like the wrapper of milk candy.
Ombudsman Samuel Martires ordered the suspension of over 40 immigration officials following a BI report that there were discrepancies in their statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN), and their salaries.
The order imposed suspension on the 44 BI personnel, namely: Erwin Ortañez; Grifton Medina; Glenn Comia; Benlado Guevarra; Danieve Binsol; Deon Albao; Arlan Edward Mendoza; Anthony Lopez; Cecille Jonathan Orozco; Dennis Robles; Bradford Allen; Vincent Bryan Allas; Rodolfo Magbuhos Jr.; Er German Robin; Gabriel Estacio; Ralph Ryan Garcia; Phol Villanueva; Abdul Fahad Calaca; Danilo Deudor; Mark Macababad; Aurelio Lucero; George Bituin; Salahudin Hadjinoor; Cherry Pie Ricolcol; Chevy Chase Naniong; Carl Jordan Perez; Abdulhafez Hadji Basher; Jeffrey Dale Ignacio; Juan Carlo Gomez;
