Lieutenant Bernard Haines, Captain James Daubeny and Captain Richard Dawson, all of the 18th, Royal Irish Regiment, New Zealand, 1868. Ensign Bernard Gilpin Haines gets one mention in Campaigns and History of the Royal Irish Regiment, appearing on the list of officers who deployed to New Zealand with the 2nd Battalion in 1863. Haines was born in London on 6th February 1842, the son of Samuel and Ann Haines. His Ensign's commission dated from 18th January 1861.He was promoted Lieutenant in October 1865 and retired from the service on 5th July 1873 receiving the value of his commission. Haines became a Militia Captain in the 4th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment on 10th May 1882, promoted to Major on 24th December 1892. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel , commanding the 4th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment on 31st October 1894. Haines was granted the honorary rank of Colonel on 28th November 1894, and he retired from the Militia on 1st January 1902.

Richard William Erskine Dawson was born on 31st December 1832 in Malta, the son of Major George Thomas Dawson, 73rd Foot, and his wife Euphemia née Erskine. Dawson fought in the Crimean War and in the Maori Wars with the 18th Royal Irish. He was Lieutenant Colonel commanding the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment between 1882 and 1886 and eventually rose to the rank of Major-General. Richard Dawson and Florence Anna Barton, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Hugh William Barton were married on 13th May 1871, in Croydon, England. The couple had no children. Dawson died on 11th June 1890, aged 57, in Kensington, London.

1 La colère de l’Éternel s’enflamma de nouveau contre Israël, et il excita David contre eux, en disant : Va, fais le dénombrement d’Israël et de Juda. 2 Et le roi dit à Joab, qui était chef de l’armée et qui se trouvait près de lui : Parcours toutes les tribus d’Israël, depuis Dan jusqu’à Beer-Schéba ; qu’on fasse le dénombrement du peuple, et que je sache à combien il s’élève. 3 Joab dit au roi : Que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, rende le peuple cent fois plus nombreux, et que les yeux du roi mon seigneur le voient ! Maintenant, ô Éternel, daigne pardonner l’iniquité de ton serviteur, car j’ai complètement agi en insensé ! 11 Le lendemain, quand David se leva, la parole de l’Éternel fut ainsi adressée à Gad le prophète, le voyant de David : 12 Va dire à David : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Je te propose trois fléaux ; choisis-en un, et je t’en frapperai. 13 Gad alla vers David, et lui fit connaître la chose, en disant : Veux-tu sept années de famine dans ton pays, ou bien trois mois de fuite devant tes ennemis qui te poursuivront, ou bien trois jours de peste dans ton pays ? Maintenant choisis, et vois ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m’envoie. 14 David répondit à Gad : Je suis dans une grande angoisse ! Oh ! tombons entre les mains de l’Éternel, car ses compassions sont immenses ; mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes ! 15 L’Éternel envoya la peste en Israël, depuis le matin jusqu’au temps fixé ; et, de Dan à Beer-Schéba, il mourut soixante-dix mille hommes parmi le peuple. 16 Comme l’ange étendait la main sur Jérusalem pour la détruire, l’Éternel se repentit de ce mal, et il dit à l’ange qui faisait périr le peuple : Assez ! Retire maintenant ta main. L’ange de l’Éternel était près de l’aire d’Aravna, le Jébusien. 17 David, voyant l’ange qui frappait parmi le peuple, dit à l’Éternel : Voici, j’ai péché ! Je veux l’acheter de toi à prix d’argent, et je n’offrirai point à l’Éternel, mon Dieu, des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien. Et David acheta l’aire et les bœufs pour cinquante sicles d’argent. 25 David bâtit là un autel à l’Éternel, et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices d’actions de grâces. Alors l’Éternel fut apaisé envers le pays, et la plaie se retira d’Israël.

Les réseaux sociaux

entre émerveillement et terreur

La technologie, et son développement rapide, suscite de grandes émotions, allant de l’émerveillement à la terreur. La prise de parole sur les réseaux sociaux participe de ce débat entre la fascination d’une parole libre et la peur du pouvoir destructeur de l’extrême polarisation. Entre les deux, des voix s’élèvent, soit pour remettre en perspective l’impact réel des réseaux sociaux sur nos sociétés, soit pour réclamer des lois et autres mesures pour mieux les encadrer.

Les controverses et les échanges polarisants foisonnent sur les médias sociaux qui les amplifient à la manière d’un porte-voix. Or, des études statistiques démontrent que ces opinions partagées sur les réseaux sociaux ne sont le fait que d’une petite minorité qui forme, certes, « une voix de l’opinion publique dont nous devons tenir compte, leur " micro "étant particulièrement audible. Mais ils ne sont pas l’opinion publique » (Giguère, 2019). Ces données tendent à dédramatiser les angoisses que la parole déchaînée sur Internet engendre. Pourtant, nombre d’événements sociaux et politiques survenus à l’internationale ces dernières années ravivent ces angoisses. Par exemple :

La prise de parole polarisante sur les réseaux sociaux ne serait ainsi le fait que de quelques individus au profil psychologique bien défini : des individus ayant de grands besoins de reconnaissance, de stimulation, d’expression de leur individualité, de connexion avec autrui et de sentir qu’ils ont le pouvoir d’influer sur le monde (Giguère, 2019). La majorité des gens se contenteraient plutôt de consulter le contenu disponible sur ces plateformes sans y contribuer eux-mêmes. Il est néanmoins possible d’inférer que ces contenus peuvent avoir un effet d’influence sur ceux qui les consultent. Le rôle politique des médias sociaux n’est plus à prouver. Ils facilitent le regroupement de personnes autour de sujets divers et leur mobilisation autour de revendications. Apparaît ici une première face d’Internet, positive, « voire prométhéenne, censée favoriser ou du moins fluidifier la démocratie » (Nocetti, 2022), la faisant passer de représentative à participative et collaborative. Mais cette démocratie se heurte à une deuxième face d’Internet, « plus récente, vectrice de désordre et, plus largement, d’aliénation de nos sociétés au discours acéphale que génèrent les réseaux sociaux » (Nocetti, 2022) alors que leur structure algorithmique favorise la diffusion de fausses nouvelles à une vitesse fulgurante au détriment des informations vraies, soit six fois plus vite (Nocetti, 2022).

Il convient donc d’accorder le juste niveau d’attention à cette parole polarisante qui hurle sur les réseaux sociaux en reconnaissant qu’elle n’est représentative que d’une frange de la société, mais il faut aussi savoir reconnaître le pouvoir de déstabilisation que ces réseaux font peser sur la vulnérabilité de nos démocraties.

6th February 1842 - England. Ensign Bernard Gilpin Haines gets one mention in Campaigns and History of the Royal Irish Regiment, appearing on the list of officers who deployed to New Zealand with the 2nd Battalion in 1863. Haines was born in London on 6th February 1842, the son of Samuel and Ann Haines. His Ensign's commission dated from 18th January 1861.He was promoted Lieutenant in October 1865 and retired from the service on 5th July 1873 receiving the value of his commission. Haines became a Militia Captain in the 4th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment on 10th May 1882, promoted to Major on 24th December 1892. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel , commanding the 4th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment on 31st October 1894. Haines was granted the honorary rank of Colonel on 28th November 1894, and he retired from the Militia on 1st January 1902.
