Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, had always worried that his company’s victory last year in a multimillion-dollar legal battle against Google’s app store monopoly wouldn’t be enough to open up competition. Even if Google could no longer keep alternative marketplaces out of Android, phone manufacturers could make them harder to access. In a US lawsuit filed in San Francisco today, that’s exactly what Epic alleges Google has conspired with Samsung to do.

Some newer Samsung phones have required settings changes to install apps from the web such as Epic’s app marketplace, according to Epic, which also develops Fortnite and Rocket Racing. The requirement became effective by default in July, and Epic launched its app store in August. Samsung claims the feature it calls Auto Blocker protects against “applications from unauthorized sources” and “malicious activity.” But it extends the installation process from 15 steps to 21, Epic alleges. The company says that it has found in the past that the greater the number of hurdles, the fewer people complete the process.

“It is not about reasonable measures to protect users against malware,” Sweeney told reporters in a briefing ahead of the lawsuit filing. “It's about obstruction of competition.”

“Contrary to Epic Game's assertions, Samsung actively fosters market competition, enhances consumer choice, and conducts its operations fairly,” said a Samsung spokesperson in a statement. “The features integrated into our devices are designed in accordance with Samsung’s core principles of security, privacy, and user control, and we remain fully committed to safeguarding users' personal data. Users have the choice to disable Auto Blocker at any time. We plan to vigorously contest Epic Game's baseless claims.”

Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.

The litigation builds on an effort Epic launched in 2020 to deliver more choice to mobile users and boost its own bottom line. While downloading apps any which way from just about any source is generally easy on desktops and laptops, Apple and Google have used warnings and varying policy and technical curbs to keep users downloading from the iOS App Store and Google Play, which deliver enormous profits to the tech giants by virtue of sales commissions they collect.

Epic, through a lawsuit, won a minor concession from Apple that is still being fought over; penalties against Google are expected from a judge soon.

In the press conference, Sweeney acknowledged that Epic doesn’t have clear evidence that Google and Samsung collaborated to roll out Auto Blocker. But emails and notes presented by Epic during its jury trial against Google last year showed how the search company regularly engaged in discussions with Samsung aimed at limiting competition. Google denied those accusations.

Early this month, Sweeney reached out to two senior Samsung executives to ask them to rethink the approach with Auto Blocker and allow for a smoother process to download legitimate software. Sweeney said a resolution couldn’t be reached that benefitted all developers, prompting the lawsuit. “We are going to continue to fight until there is a level playing field,” he says. He added that it “sucks” to sue Samsung, which has promoted Epic’s offerings in the past.

Epic has notched over 10 million installations of its mobile app store, short of a goal to reach 100 million by the end of the year, Sweeney says. He believes Auto Blocker and other new impediments, as he views them, have hurt Epic’s ability to gain traction. And his focus on fighting Apple and Google is costing Epic significant sums, with no end in sight to the litigation. “The benefits only come in the future, when the obstructions have truly been eliminated,” he says.

PARIS, FRANCE -- Around a couple of years ago in the late mid-year of 2022… Imagine a scene previously in a 5th new season of Miraculous Ladybug that no one is talking about the main villain 'Hawkmoth', knowingly as Mr. Gabriel Donatien Athanase Agreste (who is a well-known antagonist and a self-made jewelry ring brand) reveals a new gadget ring unveiling across Paris that aired in a fictional advertisement that aligns with his sophisticated style and villainous flair. It's what we called in the fictional world 'Alliance Rings' made by an independent fashion and jewelry manufacture company, which can now being potentially linked in a new gadget is the Samsung Galaxy Ring (SGR), a smart ring that is recently rumored to be the latest innovation from Samsung in South Korea.

The 'Alliance Ring' from a French cartoon series of Télévision Française 1's "Miraculous Ladybug: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir" (part of 'TFOU' programming block), particularly associated with the said male antagonist villain of 'Hawkmoth' are depicted as advanced technological devices that serve multiple functions, as advertised in a consumer tech conference. They were introduced in the show as smart rings capable of projecting a holographic screen and were used by the villain 'Monarch' to transfer all Miraculous powers to his minions without the need for the actual pro-Miraculouses like 'Chloe Bourgeois'.

Frankly speaking, Disney XD News had first recently obtain to investigate this story trend, notably a prediction in the anticipated new episode 'Multiplication' and other episodes on 'Miraculous Ladybug' show came out true for Samsung Galaxy Ring.

Samsung unveils Gauss2 AI model at SDC24 Korea

Samsung has revealed Gauss2, the second-generation proprietary AI model set to significantly enhance user experiences.

Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, President and CTO of the Device eXperience (DX) Division, commented: “Samsung Electronics is committed to developing cutting-edge software, including AI and data analytics, to enhance user experiences.

“With three distinct models, Samsung Gauss2 is already boosting our internal productivity, and we plan to integrate it into products to deliver higher levels of convenience and personalisation.”

Samsung Gauss2: Multimodal AI

Gauss2 builds upon last year’s internal generative AI model, showcasing advancements in handling language, code, and images. It comes in three variants: Compact, Balanced, and Supreme, tailored to different computational needs.

Compact: Optimised for environments with limited computing resources, ensuring effective performance even on-device.

Balanced: Strikes a balance among performance, speed, and efficiency; suitable for a variety of tasks.

Supreme: Incorporates Mixture of Experts (MoE) technology to minimise computational costs while maximising efficiency and performance.

Gauss2 is designed to support between nine and fourteen languages, depending on the model, and a range of programming languages.

Samsung’s custom training techniques and tokeniser aim to deliver peak efficiency across supported languages. The new models promise response generation speeds 1.5 to 3 times faster than leading open-source alternatives, facilitating prompt AI interaction and minimising wait times.

Customisation and deployment

Samsung’s in-house generative AI model allows easier customisation for specific applications.

Gauss2 supports diverse productivity tasks, with widespread adoption among Samsung developers. The coding assistant ‘code.i’ – enhanced by Gauss2 – is utilised extensively within the DX Division and by international research teams, with up to 60% of developers now engaging regularly.

The Gauss Portal, another Gauss-powered AI service, enhances productivity through features such as document summarisation and translation. Since its launch, this AI service has expanded internationally, aiding various office tasks. As of August, call centre operations also benefit from AI-driven categorisation and summarisation.

Going forward, Samsung aims to further boost internal productivity, improving services like code.i and enhancing the Gauss Portal’s natural language question-and-answer capabilities. Future functionalities will include multimodal operations, like chart analysis and image creation.

‘AI for All’

Samsung’s strategy, “AI for All,” envisions widespread incorporation of AI-based services across its product lines. By combining AI with knowledge graph technology, Samsung anticipates delivering even greater personalisation.

Besides Gauss2, the conference featured presentations on software development, including the SmartThings platform’s customer experience improvements.
