Dukhtar (Afia Nathaniel, 2014)
Cast: Samiyah Mumtaz, Mohib Mirza, Saleha Aref, Asif Khan, Ajab Gul, Samina Ahmad, Adnan Shah, Abdullah Jaan, Omair Rana. Screenplay: Afia Nathaniel. Cinematography: Najaf Bilgrami, Armughan Hassan. Production design: Nauman Kashif. Film editing: Armughan Hassan, Afia Nathaniel, Lee Percy. Music: Sahir Ali Bagga, Peter Nashel.
Dukhtar takes place where tourists fear to tread: the mountainous parts of northern Pakistan. But it's not a film about inter-religious strife or terrorism, except for the kind of emotional terrorism that results from the conflict between ancient tribalism and the modern world. The "daughter" of the film's title -- in the opening credits the Urdu word "dukhtar" morphs into the English equivalent -- is Zainab (Saleha Aref), a bright girl on the verge of puberty, whom we see in a charming scene early in the film trying to teach her mother, Allah Rakhi (Samiya Mumtaz), some of the English that she has learned at school. But Zainab's education is about to be threatened: Her father, the tribal chief Daulat Khan (Asif Khan), is trying to put an end to the longstanding blood feud with a rival tribe led by Tor Gul (Abdullah Jan). They come to a deal: The feud will end if Daulat Khan will give his daughter in marriage to the elderly Tor Gul. But Allah Rakhi, who as a girl was married to Daulat Khan in a similar arrangement, doesn't want to see her daughter condemned to the same kind of life. She takes Zainab and flees. Along the way she persuades a young truck driver, Sohail (Mohib Mirza), to give them a lift. He takes them, after several narrow escapes, to his home in the mountains and finally to crowded and busy Lahore, where Allah Rakhi is to meet with her mother, whom she hasn't seen since her marriage. Afia Nathaniel's screenplay is a bit on the formulaic side: We've seen many versions of this flight-and-pursuit road movie, and her film contains all of the usual close calls and missed connections we've come to expect. The movie gets its life and an appearance of freshness from the performances. Saleha Aref invests Zainab with the awkwardness and rebellion that you'd expect from a girl her age, Samiya Mumtaz is convincingly both fierce and tender, and the chemistry that develops between her character and Mohib Mirza's is convincing. Even better, the cinematography by Armughan Hassan is superb, from the sweeping spectacle of the mountain background to the rich use of color. The film departs from the conventions of its genre with an ambiguous ending, which points up the difficulty of trying to force real-life concerns like tribalism and the status of women into a movie formula: Neither a traditional happy ending nor a bleak triumph of the status quo would have felt right. Dukhtar is Nathaniel's first feature, and it shows more than just promise.

[ad_1] It is no secret that popular Pakistani film and television actor Saud Qasmi has been part of the local entertainment scene for several years. He recently starred in fan-favourite, Baby Baji, with his wife, Javeria Saud. Saud recently sat with podcast host Nadir Ali to discuss the sensational hit serial along with his relationship with distant family relatives Indian star Nawazuddin Siddiqui and cricketer Usman Tariq. The Yeh Zindagi Hai actor sat with the host to discuss the reasons behind his latest television serial’s undeniable success. The family drama series stars other celebrated names in the industry like Samina Ahmad, Munawar Saeed, Junaid Jamahed Niazi, Sunita Marshall, Hassan Ahmed, Fazal Hussain, Syeda Tuba Anwar and Aina Asif. When asked about what exactly attributed to the success of the show, Saud was determined that a lot of what went into it was the right niyatein (intentions) behind the production of the show by the whole team along with a great deal of blessings. He said, “Plenty of people have been doing and continue to do this work. Who God wills to bless with success is His decision.” The actor also took time to credit the writer, Mansoor Ahmed Khan, as well as recognized that big channels come with their own audience which the program benefitted off of. However, perhaps the most awaited hook that the Ishq Positive actor delivered came moments later when he hinted at the possibility of a second season. While speaking of the final episode, the actor stated, “There was a lot that was left during the ending; perhaps we might pick it up in season two.” Besides his hit serial, Saud also took the time to explain an unexpected relationship with family relatives Nawazuddin and Usman Khwaja. The Indian is apparently related to the local film star. “My brother from my aunt’s side, Mansoor – who is from India – is married to his [Nawazuddin’s] sister,” he revealed. The Gunnah actor also disclosed that he had known the Australian cricketer since Usman was young. Thinking back to his days in Islamabad, Qasmi reminisced, “He used to play tennis with us – he is the child of my sister-in-law’s sister.” [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68h8wERD0jo[/embed] [ad_2]

Imagine the watchman minding his own business, not watching anything, and he suddenly sees Gopi bahu drying a laptop on the clothes line 😭.
I loved Kamala's outfits. Especially the mendhi outfit. The wedding outfit could have been a little more fancy (speaking from experience of an older siblings wedding) . But I like that they had the salwar kameez rep and it helped Iman with the dancing and action scenes she had to do. The outfit looked really comfortable. The regional thing is important too but I liked what Ms Marvel did. Samina Ahmad (who plays Sana nani, she's also a popular actress in Pakistani shows) is a huge saree person irl despite being a Pakistani local. So the show chose to used the actors lived experiences, which is realistic. Instead of portraying every desi in a specific box. This could have helped if they'd asked the HP actresses opinions.
I didn't finish Never Have I Ever but I watched scenes and the outfits were great. The show improved drastically after season 1 and served some unique desi rep. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan brought the energy too.
I just randomly remembered that Ron Weasley and Padma Patil's child in that AU Cursed Child timeline is named Panju Weasley 😭😭😭 PANJU WEASLEY. As if Parvati and Padma's horrendous Yule Ball dresses in the Goblet of Fire movie weren't bad enough, they had to introduce Panju Weasley. NO ONE NAMES THEIR CHILD PANJU IN INDIA. Haven't the British committed enough atrocities against us? They never stop 😭
No, seriously. What is this? The actresses probably had better clothes in their closets. I know because I definitely do.
