Thoughts : The Congress (2013)

One of my favorite current trends in film is the practice of masking science fiction under the guise of other genres.  Ari Folman’s The Congress, a re-imagining of Stanislaw Lem’s novel The Futurological Congress, is one of the shining examples of how this practice can be done to a degree that is wonderfully jarring, forcing you to truly think about the concepts presented to you on multiple levels.

The film is a brilliant example of how an intellectual property can be adjusted and molded into something true to the original while being wholly unique from it.  Robin Wright plays a loose interpretation of herself, and the film is about a choice given to her that will completely change her career : allow herself to be subjected to a scanning process that will give Miramount Studios ownership of her image to be digitally manipulated as they choose (ending her physical career as an actress while her persona lives on in celluloid), or find herself phased out altogether from the entertainment industry.  Once her choice is made, the film shifts into a completely different, highly stylized interpretation of the source material.

The two vastly different halves of this film serve one another extremely well in terms of narrative balance.  The themes of identity, integrity, honesty and ownership of your art that are all introduced and debated in their corporate settings during the first half of the film are vastly amplified in the animated, psychedelic second half of the film.  Many elements of The Futurological Congress are faithfully adapted, but many elements are also given very relevant (and nearly genius) interpretations as archetypes of famous characters and exaggerated versions of recognizable celebrity faces.  Bridgit Folman Films Gang really and truly left an indelible mark on The Congress with their animation.

Wright, despite playing an extremely stylized version of herself, gives an engrossing and incredibly honest performance, as well as giving validation to Kodi Smith-McPhee and Sami Gayle as her children through very realistic personal moments.  Harvey Keitel and Danny Huston knock it out the park as Wright’s agent and the head of Miramount Studios, respectively.  Paul Giamatti, though given limited screen time, still manages to radiate his warmth, personality and caring nature via his role as the doctor of Wright’s son.  Giamatti and Huston’s animated characters are also brilliantly conceived and performed.  Jon Hamm even manages to bring weight to his performance, be it voice only.

The Congress is truly one of the most unique releases of the decade.  It is certainly a slow burn, as the first half forces you to emotionally invest yourself in the personal stakes laid out, but the payoff is wonderful once things shift into a completely different gear for the second half.  There are even a few pleasant surprises and comedic moments that permeate through the chaos and madness.
