The rest of the kit isn't done yet the only thing that's for sure going in here is the book that fits in the lid the other stuff is just there for aesthetic. I do plan on making a candle that's going to go in there, a hand rolled beeswax candle. Some ancestor connection oil. An incense blend. Some crystals of course.
Just the time that it took to make the box, I'm not going to account for the time that I had to redo it, this kid's going to be on the more expensive side because this is all handmade.

Being a witch in New Orleans meant two things. One, you were guaranteed a run-in with the Mikaelson Family. Two, Klaus Mikaelson would either want to kill you or use you.
To your fate, he found you mildly amusing and infinitely useful. You had a particular percolation towards divination and had luck advising people in the past on what paths to avoid. In exchange for not killing your friends, Klaus has requested your services. Lucky you.
Tonight, you were not with Klaus. You were in your home, lighting candles for Samhain. You were wearing a black dress and witches hat in case trick-or-treaters came by. You had already set up your altar with photos of your ancestors. You were in the process of setting aside some of your dinner as an offering. You were supposed to be left alone. You were never that lucky.
You hear knocking on the door and open it to see Klaus smiling like a cat.
"Trick or treat," he said mockingly. You considered the merits of slamming the door in his face.
"This is my night off."
"This is a friendly call," Klaus said, peering into your home. "Care to invite me in?"
"Friendly entails that we're friends."
"We are friends, love. I even brought you a gift," Klaus said, pulling a box out of his pocket, ribbon wrapped around it. You narrowed your eyes, taking the gift hesitantly and opening it to see a ring. It was a Claddagh ring, except instead of being all silver, the heart was made out of black tourmaline for protection.
"What's the catch?" you asked.
"No catch. I saw it and thought of you," Klaus sighed. "It really is cold out here, and I would be appreciative if you invited me in."
Realizing you weren't going to get the original off your doorstep in any timely manner, you sighed and invited him in. He smiled, immediately inspecting your home as he entered. You went back to your alter, arranging everything as you gathered other supplies.
"In the middle of something?"
"Yes, tonight is actually an important night for my people," you mumbled, filling your arms with candles.
"Ah, Samhain, when all the people I've killed decide to haunt me."
"Do they really?" you turned to look at him, hiding amusement.
"Yes, it's rather annoying," Klaus took the candles out of your arms as you struggled to hold everything. You mumbled a thanks, heading to your living room with him falling behind you. "What spell are you casting this evening?"
"I'm giving thanks to my ancestors and asking for safe passage into the new year," you responded, putting all your materials on the ground. You also liked to give thanks to Hecate, but you didn't think he'd care much about that. Surprisingly, Klaus was silent and even helped you set up your circle. You shuffled your tarot cards, laying seven out before you as you got comfortable on the ground.
"Am I allowed to be here?" Klaus asked. You paused.
"Actually, it's sometimes helpful to have another person as a consort," you answered honestly. You thought he might bite your head off for calling him a witch's consort, but he just nodded and sat next to you as well. You snapped your fingers, lighting all the candles as you took several deep breaths. "I give thanks this Samhain and request safe passage into the new year. I light these candles for my ancestors, Hecate, and Mother Earth, who I will see in spring. Use me as your guide and as your soldier."
The flames burned brighter, a slight wind picking up in the room. Klaus looked around curiously as you flipped over your cards to see the message given to you. The spirits materialized slightly in the room, and you felt their energy trying to pull from yours, desperate for a life of their own. You weren't expecting the force and recoiled slightly as you continued chanting thanks and deciphering the cards. The flames grew hotter, and you struggled to hold your own against so many ghosts. Without warning, you felt Klaus put a hand on your shoulder. You didn't ask before latching on to his energy, pulling from it as an extra force to push back the spirits from the veil. When you closed the circle and finished your spell, the candles burned down to small flames again, leaving you in the quiet of your home. You felt yourself start to fall, Klaus catching you and holding you up as you regained your footing in the living world.
"Is that what usually occurs?" he asked.
"Sometimes, it was just stronger this time around," you coughed, trying to sit up. Klaus helped you, but he didn't remove his hands from you. "Having you around was what helped me push them back."
"Well, we do make a good team," Klaus smiled. You were quiet as you searched his eyes.
"Klaus, why did you come here tonight?"
He paused. "Would it be wrong to say because I missed you?"
You shook your head no, and he visibly relaxed.
"Y/N," Klaus said. "I'm going to kiss you."
You nodded, and he leaned in, kissing you reverently. The big bad of New Orleans was gentler than you imagined, his hands soft against your face as he pulled you closer to him. You sighed into the kiss, letting him deepen it as he laid you carefully on the ground. You pulled him on top of you, fingers scratching his scalp as one of his hands pushed up your dress. He pulled your legs around him, allowing you to feel him against your core.
The kiss grew in intensity, Klaus nipping your lip and coaxing a moan.
"Klaus," you breathed. "I want you, please."
Klaus chuckled at your begging, sitting up to remove his shirt. You removed the rest of your clothes, heat spreading through your body as Klaus admired your form. He sat back against your couch, pulling you into his lap and kissing you again. You let yourself sink down on him, moaning and burying your face in his neck. His hands grabbed your ass, helping you move as you worked up a rhythm. You felt so full with him in you, and the growls you were coaxing from him were enough to bring you to the edge. Klaus brought his hand between you, rubbing over your bud and helping you come with a cry. He held you up as he chased his own release, and when he came, he sank his teeth into your neck.
You had never had a vampire drink from you before, but you expected it to hurt. Klaus drinking from you, though, felt intimate. Like you were now a part of him, he could never shed. Even after he slowed your movements, it took him a second to detach from your neck. His lips were coated red as he rested his head back. Curiosity got the better of you, and you wiped his mouth with your thumb and licked it clean. The taste of your own blood wasn't as appetizing as it was to vampires, but you saw the way Klaus zeroed in on your lips, and it made it worth it. He bit the inside of his wrist, holding it up to you to drink from. You accepted, not breaking eye contact as you felt your skin stitch itself back together.
You both sat in silence.
"You know a Claddagh ring is typically reserved for lovers?" you asked.
"I'm well aware, love."
"Why do I feel this was your plan all along, to seduce me?" you traced his chest, narrowing your eyes at him. He just smirked.
"I've wanted you since I saw you; I just finally saw an opening."
You kissed him again, feeling him everywhere inside of you, as you spent the rest of the evening together as one.

A Very Cutesy, Very Demure Halloween -Oneshot
I'm pausing "The Witch and The Doctor" to post this little Halloween blurb that was requested. Happy Halloween my darlings!
Word count: 875
Tumblr media
Bucky never did quite understand the point of Halloween.  He knew it came from an ancient pagan holiday called Samhain, and the whole idea of the veil between the living and the dead being thin that one day of the year.  He was sure that to some extent it was something to remember those who had passed on, but it had turned into this big, commercialized production that he didn’t like.  That, and considering his gory, troubled past, he couldn’t understand the appeal of slasher or horror films.
But watching Y/N teeter dangerously on a dining room chair as she pinned up more lights and long garlands of fake Autumn leaves along the common room ceiling, he couldn’t help but smile.  “Careful, Y/N,” Bucky laughed, walking over and steadying the chair, his hands moving up to hold her hips.
“Oh, ha!” Y/N laughed, glancing down at him as she placed the last bit of garland just the way she wanted.  “Thanks, Buck.”
He helped her get off the chair, watching her step back and inspect her handiwork.  “Is decorating for Fall really worth risking your well being?” he smirked.
“100%,” she answered, winking at him.  “Autumn is the best time of the year.”
“Are you a horror fan?” He asked, trying to gauge her reasoning.
“Oh, no, not me.  I’m a wuss when it comes to horror films.  I’m more of a cutesy, tamed version of Halloween lover,” she shook her head as she bent over to grab more things out of her decor box.  “More Hocus Pocus than Ghostface, you know?”
“Hocus Pocus?” Bucky asked.
Y/N dropped the decor she was holding, looking at him incredulously.  “You’ve never seen Hocus Pocus?!” she asked loudly.
“Uh…no?” Bucky said, a little nervous at her reaction.
“OH MY GOD!” she screamed.  “We are watching it tonight.  Clear your calendar.  You have no plans.  Do you understand me?”
“Yes, yes ma’am,” Bucky smirked but nodded seriously.
“Good.  Now help me put the rest of this stuff out,” Y/N said, a terse tone in her voice that left no room for argument.
Bucky helped Y/N put up the rest of the Autumn and Halloween decorations she had in her boxes, being extra careful and diligent in putting them in the exact spot she instructed him to.  By the time dinner rolled around he helped her get a soup going, then sliced some french bread that they crisped up in the oven to dip it into the soup.  She got some cookies and drinks ready and they sat down in front of the TV in the common room that was above the fireplace, which she promptly turned on.  “For the vibes,” she said with a happy grin as she turned on the movie Hocus Pocus.
Bucky enjoyed the movie.  It was a little corny at times, and he didn’t understand all the references, but he liked it a lot, almost crying at the sweet, family moment at the end.  When it was over and “I Put a Spell On You” played again over the credits Y/N turned to him with a serious look.  “So?” she asked.
He smiled at her.  “I loved it,” he said.
Y/N squealed, her smile wide as she clapped her hands.  “Oh yay!  It’s so good, right?  Not too scary or anything.  Spooky but in a chill, happy way.”
“Exactly,” Bucky agreed, sitting up and turning to face her.  “Today has been fun.  Thank you for including me and sharing it with me.”
Y/N’s smile softened, her eyes twinkling in happiness.  “No problem.  I’m glad you liked it all.  It’s my favorite time of year, and I haven’t been able to really relax and celebrate it for a while with, well, you know, all this,” she said, gesturing to the Avengers Tower around them.  “Hopefully I can get to an actual pumpkin patch this year.”
“Can I come with you?” Bucky asked.
Y/N smirked teasingly at him.  “You wanna tromp around a pumpkin patch, in the freezing Autumn breeze?”
“As long as it’s with you, then yes,” Bucky said, slightly leaning toward her with his own smirk.
Y/N’s eyes widened at his words, her smile slipping in shock.  “Really?” she asked quietly.
“Really,” Bucky nodded, leaning forward again until he could reach and nuzzled her nose with his.  “We could make it a date.”
“A date?” Y/N whispered, her eyes fluttering at how close he was.
“If you’ll have me?” Bucky implied, arching an eyebrow at her.  “Then I could take you on a walk around Central Park to see the changing leaves with a pumpkin spice latte?”
Y/N smiled widely again, nuzzling his nose back.  “That sounds perfect.”
Bucky angled his head and grazed his lips over hers.  “Then it’s a date.  But, I don’t think I can wait for that first date kiss.”
“Me neither,” Y/N said, then surged forward and kissed him.
Bucky immediately responded, kissing her back passionately as he wound his arms around her waist, and she wrapped her arms around his neck.  He felt elated at finally getting to this point, thanking the spooky powers above for giving him a spooky girl as his Halloween treat.

Witchholm had been listless since the Queen had departed for Heresy...and failed to return.
The events that were normal for Yule still went on. The Roller Derby Championships were due to be held on Yuletide were all down to two teams (The Rusalkas and the Timber Witches), gifts and parties organized, and the Society of Hags organizing the deduction of who would be elected the Winter Waker to bring in the one and only day of snow. There had been fierce competition, and many presentations by notable witches, but something was....dulled.
Without the liveliness Queen Vine brought, the anticipation of seeing her among them, there was an anxious, angry energy. People were complaining, making excuses. Some even wondered why the Queen had been gone so long after all.
"I haven't even seen Triss around! Like where are they?!"
"Yeah, Vine's favorite place to order takeout said it's been weeks since they last got her order, and she never skips a Tuesday publishing dinner!"
"We're supposed to have the Queen give out prizes. No way that old Beldam Brisk is gonna give out anything good."
The Society of Hags did worry. They had received their instructions from Vine prior to her departure, but had no explanations as to why she was gone for so long. The city was infamously difficult to manage without the Queen looming over. Vine was a detached ruler yes, but a reliable fall-back in case rules were broken and feuds established. And she was a charmer. The witches liked seeing their patroness and queen now and again, and thrilled from her flights of fancy and her eccentric whims.
Without entertainment or fear to motivate, there were concerns. Deep concerns.
What else could be done though? Time did not stop. And soon the day of the Winter Solstice arrived.
The final match-up between the Roller Derby contestants was bloody as always. Perhaps fueled by impatience for a long match after surviving the Death Bowl with only two players, or perhaps in hopes that the more gruesome the match the more appeased Vine would be and return....but the Timber Witches annihilated their opponents, casting curses that would doubtless enter the banned spells book for future matches. So gory and brutal the match was that few witches left with unbismirched jerseys in support. A lot of blood was tossed around.
Secret Keeper challenges were finally delivered upon. The largest gift exchange of the year, neighbors, friends and strangers traded gifts. There were squabbles of course, some accusing others of being cheap or of not following them closely enough. But most witches were well satisfied. A dwarf witch by the name of Alice Creedy won Best Secret Keeper by meticulously tracking down lost photos, newspaper clippings and merchandise from G-Force for her gift receiver Grendel Grue...including a lock of his own hair. The Box of Mystery gifted to her upon receiving presented her....a pair of silky panties. Nice.
The Winter Waker Pageant was in its final stages. The contestants were not based purely on beauty, but skill. And when Trudy Schmaltz presented not only a flawless theory on alchemical reversals with a demonstration, but transformed lead into a Gucci purse, she was declared the winner. Yet Trudy looked anxious as she was given the sash and crown.
She would be the Winter Waker, the only one to cast snow upon the city. But without the Queen.....
Like before on Samhain, the crowd moved to the Emerald Tower. There was still a raised platform to address the crowd. The Tower had taken on some greenery in the Queen's absence, thorny vines beginning to climb up where she'd neglected to call for gardeners to maintain the pristine paradise below. There were eyes glancing up to the sky, hoping for a bolt of green lightning. But the sky had been disturbingly clear for weeks.
And at last, the Society of Hags could delay no longer.
The oldest looking of them, a witch who had died in her eighties, having held off death by sacrificing unlucky pastors, stepped up to the microphone. In her hand was a green letter, written in Vine's own hand.
"Good evening to you all. And Happy Yuletide." The old witch spoke into the microphone...to a dead silence. "Usually, this is the time in which our Queen, the All Knowing Seer, would bless the finest witch of the year as the Winter Waker, and bestow her almighty power upon her to awaken the single day of winter upon our fair city...."
The witch hesitated.
"However, I regret to inform you all that Queen Vine has written with remorse that she is required by Lucifer himself to remain in Heresy and prepare it for future inhabitants. In her absence, the Society of Hags shall bestow our shared might upon Miss Trudy Schmaltz, winner of the Winter Waker Pageant-"
But this already was not what the witches wanted to hear.
Trudy dejectedly ascended the podium. Even with seven witches pouring magical energy into her body, it clearly was not the same. Sinners could only scratch at the power Goetic magic could provide, and when Trudy cast her spell to the sky, the clouds formed slowly...not tinged with green but dark grey, before a faint snowfall began to descend.
There were no cheers. A few half-hearted claps. But the audience looked just shy of storming off home.
______
The after-party was dull. It had been the worst Yuletide in living memory. Not for the sake of disasters. But because it had been boring.
"Fucking stupid." Grumbled the citizens, tromping off to the now stale parties expected at apartments, houses and covens. "All that and Vine still didn't come!"
There were fights. The Timber Witches ended up destroying the pub they'd gone to visit for the after-party after an argument over who was the winning factor of the finals was. Witches cast more curses that day than any other that year, pent-up, angry, and dissatisfied.
One witch got thrown out of her coven for the night after she'd bad-mouthed the coven mother. Drunk, upset, she was resorting to kicking cans around the edge of Coven Hill, where the borders ended.
"Dumb Yule. Dumb party." She grumbled, stumbling towards the end of the road. She had been one of Vine's contracted witches, and had traded her soul in exchange for alcohol every day for the rest of her life and afterlife. "Dumb city."
The can kicked outside of city limits, and in a moment of drunkenness, the witch went after it. But half-way through, she remembered her clause would kick in. Vine's witches, the ones who owed her their soul, could not leave. A barrier was about to strike.
"Shit!"
But instead of faceplanting into a magic barrier, the witch tumbled through, rolling onto her back outside of city limits.
The witch blinked. She sat up.
She was....out?
She had never gone out.
No one had ever gone out.
But if she could.
"Oh my fuck." She gasped. "This means-"
.....
.....
"......ROAD TRIP!!!!!"
_______
In the darkness of Heresy, with so much left to do, and nothing but silence to hear, Vine sat on the balcony of the Tower. Wine bottles were all over. Cheese roughly carved along with salami and a few dried fruits and nuts. The food was running out. She would have perhaps a few more weeks of sustenance before she would have to endure the rest of her punishment hungry.
The wine was running out faster. She didn't look forward to a sober future, but tonight.....
"...."
Vine drank straight from the bottle. Decorum and class was....a bit pointless. Her visitors were few and seldom, her days nothing but toil. She had but a handful of faces she would have genuinely wanted to see, but the longer she spent alone, the greater her desire for company grew.
Even if it was an act of mercy...she wondered if Lucifer hadn't been cold in his choice of punishment.
Vine looked out over her world. Still a work in progress. No monsters today, or that night. For a single night and day, she would be safe to drink and lament.
"......"
".....well."
"Happy Yuletide to all. And to all a good night."

I was hexed by a coven of witches some time over Halloween or Samhain as they call it. Not the good kind either, more like the Wicked Witch kind who would do anything to get some ruby slippers, only times 10, and these witches didn't just melt in water. It was a group of 5 witches who must have known I was hot on their trail.
Personally, candy aside, I can't stand Halloween. While kids go around dressed as pretend monsters, the real ones are usually out in full force, causing chaos. There's a reason ritualistic killings are even more common on Halloween night, and this year was no different.
I started noticing strange events in my town a few nights before Halloween, I was watching the evening news, and the first story that popped up was about a string of strange elderly deaths around the county.
They were strange because, according to the victims' families (both on the news, and when I tracked them down to personally interview them) the victims were all only in their 20s just before their deaths.
According to the coroner reports, the only thing that was found on each victims that didn't make sense were strange looking ancient coins (one per victim) that were all the same type even though none of the victims knew each other.
When I checked out the coins, it was clear that they were hex coins. Before too long I started noticing I wasn't feeling as good as I usually do, I was feeling more tired despite getting the same amount of sleep as usual.
I was feeling a bit weaker, and I even noticed some patches of gray in my hair when I was doing my morning routine as well as some wrinkles that definitely weren't there before.
That's when I put 2 and 2 together and realized that it couldn't be a coincidence. But I didn't know when I would have been hexed. That was my biggest mystery.
I might not have had Bobby, Sam, or Dean here to help me figure it out, but I still had all of the training they gave me and all of the lessons they taught me. I knew from Dean's journal that the way to stop a hex coin from working was to shoot it, I just had to find where the coin was.
I tore my apartment upside down, trying to find it to no avail, but just when I was about to give up hope, I found it in the glive box of my 2004 black Honda Civic. I pulled out my revolver from the trunk and shot the coin without hesitation.
Immediately after shooting the coin, I noticed a sense of vitality returning to my body. I felt more myself, more rested, and my grays and wrinkles went completely away. That was not the end of my adventures, though. My next and final step was to find the witch who put the hex on me and all those innocents.
I had no idea that it would lead me to a whole 5 member coven of dark witches about three towns over. One of the witches looked really familiar. She was the woman I picked up hitch hiking on the highway on my way to interview one of the relatives of one of the victims.
I should have known something was up. She was acting a bit strange, but I just brushed it off, Bobby would call me an idget for sure. I knew once I identified the witch who hexed me what I had to do next.
I had to gak her and her coven. I'd find out their motive later some how, I just knew I had to stop them before Halloween night ended. Bobby taught me of a potion that one could brew to kill witches.
The only problem was it required perfection and reciting an incantation while you threw the potion. Sam Winchester, however, taught me of a much easier method of using the potion, bullets with hollows full of the potion. The potion still needed to be perfect, but with the bullets, no incantation required.
I got to work brewing the potions. Luckily, I have a friend who is a farmer, and he let me get some fresh chicken feet from him. I got that and the other ingredients and finished the potion. After it was done, I filled my bullets and loaded them into the gun I dedicated to hunting witches.
I staked the house out for a bit, to determine what my next move would be, they were right in the middle of one of their rituals, but their guards were down, so I took em out one at a time saving the witch who hexed me for last so she could see all her coven mates go first (a bit twisted I know, but this job makes you a bit twisted, and I was out for revenge.
Once the Jobe was done, I took care of the remains and headed out before the cops showed up on site. After that, I drove to my location, Walgreens, picked up one of the last bags of mixed Halloween chocolate candy, and headed home.
The candy wasn't for any kids, It was for me, I had a long week and needed to unwind. My favorite way to do that is with candy and vodka, watching old sitcom reruns from the early 2000s, so I had a bit of both candy and vodka, and plopped down in front of my TV satisfied with a job well done.

coke or pepsi? Honestly neither, but I guess I'll take pepsi.
disney or dreamworks? If I must, Disney. A higher percentage of Dreamworks animation gives me the heebie-jeebies.
coffee or tea? Tea. An excessive amount. Every day.
books or movies? Books. Films are for watching with friends.
windows or mac? Windows. Mac is an illusion of the demiurge.
dc or marvel? DC. Marvel has Spiderman (and Gwen, and Gwenpool,) but DC has everything else.
x-box or playstation? Neither.
dragon age or mass effect? Dragon Age. It's not even close.
night owl or early riser? A secret third thing.
cards or chess? (Trading) cards.
chocolate or vanilla? ...like, ice cream? Vanilla.
vans or converse? Is it bad that I don't know the difference?
Lavellan, Trevelyan, Cadash, or Adaar? Lavellan. Shamelessly.
fluff or angst? The ideal story has both. Like that deadly pink candyfloss they put in walls.
beach or forest? Forest. Sand is hell. Dirt is truth.
dogs or cats? Cats. I respect a little guy who has their needs.
clear skies or rain? Clear skies, baby. I appreciate the whimsy of rain, but I want wind, and I don't want it to soak me.
cooking or eating out? Cooking. Eating out is always uncomfy.
spicy food or mild food? Mild. I have a weak, weak, palette.
halloween/samhain or solstice/yule/christmas? Halloween and Samhain! They aren't the same, but I love them both. The happiest time of year.
would you rather forever be a little too cold or a little too hot? Cold. If I want to be warm, I can put stuff on. If I want to be cold, there's only so much I can take off.
if you could have a superpower, what would it be? Shapeshifting. That's always been my go-to answer to this question, and I can't imagine it changing.
animation or live action? Animation! It's such an underappreciated medium and it deserves more big-budget respect.
paragon or renegade? I like being nice.
baths or showers? Showers, but I'm pretty sure I'd love a bath in a big enough tub.
team cap or team ironman? If we're talking MCU, then Cap. The Sokovia accords are a deranged invasion of freedoms.
fantasy or sci-fi? In my soul, it's fantasy.
do you have three or four favourite quotes, if so what are they? - Tiffany's 'All witches are selfish...' speech from Pratchett's The Wee Free Men - 'There is another shore, you know, upon the other side', from Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - 'Someone will remember us, I say, even in another time,' Sappho - 'This is the new touch,' We Know the Devil
youtube or netflix? Youtube. Anything else is for pirating.
[REDACTED] [expunged]
when do you feel accomplished? Too much of my self-worth is based on feedback for my creative projects, but, uh, then.
star wars or star trek? Trek. Easy.
paperback books or hardcover books? Either, or digital.
to live in a world without literature or without music? I wouldn't, not if I couldn't somehow bring one back.
who was the last person to make you laugh? @larky-lark <3
city or countryside? Anywhere with good internet.
favorite chips? Not a crisps sort-of gal.
pants or dresses? Dresses, baby. Skirt really do go spinny.
libraries or museums? Libraries. God, libraries.
character driven stories or plot driven stories? Character driven!
bookmarks or folding pages? What in the goddamn is a folding page?
Dream job? I do not dream of labour.
What gives you comfort? Gentle companions.
what are some of your favorite song lyrics? Play with matches if you think you need to play with matches Seek out the hidden places where the fire burns hot and bright Find where the heat's unbearable and stay there if you have to Don't hurt anybody on your way up to the light And stay alive Just stay alive
favorite ice cream flavor ever? Vanilla. No, I'm not ashamed.
first fandom? Err... Doctor Who?
Your desert island band? The Mountain Goats. Easy.

How To Conduct A Seance
Okay let me preface this by saying this will be another long post, even though I've drafted and narrowed it down LOL. If you want more content like this, please feel free to let me know, I'd be happy to oblige! Physical Materials Needed: - A candle (Candles are used to welcome the spirits, and you can also look at it like a light guiding the dead to you. This is something I believe in my personal practice, especially since it's been traditional to leave white candles burning in windowsills to help guide the spirits home on Samhain.)
-A method of divination (this is what you'll actually be using to speak with the chosen spirit. Pendulums, talking boards, and spirit boxes are all good choices- even meditating in the alpha state of consciousness counts! If you want to know more about that specifically, check out Mat Auryn's book "Psychic Witch.")
Before You Begin:
-Make sure to be in a comfortable position, and somewhere you won't be bothered, or your group won't be bothered, for a little while. Interruptions can be seen as rude.
-If you so wish, protections are done before starting. I usually skip this step. A good idea for protection that I would use (if I didn't do seances as regularly as I do now OR were not as familiar with the spirits of that place) is to take a protective stone, such as onyx, jet, or tiger's eye, and charge it under the full moon with the intention of protection. Then, I would place this in front of the candle, so the candle is between you and the stone. That way the spirit can't get through the barrier if it's wanting to play pranks or generally be mischievous. This is not a foolproof method, however, it's very simple, and as protection isn't necessary all of the time, it works. Here's a simple graph to show what I'm trying to explain with the candle setup: X- Stone
O- Candle
Y- You
-If you don't already have a spirit in mind to contact, it may be a good idea to set a simple intention. Something such as "I am speaking with a spirit that has my best interests at heart" works fine.
Beginning the Seance:
Begin how you would start any polite conversation. Say hello! Give a brief explication as to why you're reaching out/ what you want to gain from contacting the spirits. Something as simple as "Good afternoon, I'm reaching out to learn more about you." Is perfect. OH! And I should note, though spirit communication can be done at any time, I've found it's most effective during the liminal times- dusk and dawn. Other than that, I most often do it in the afternoon. After saying hello, this is where, if you have a particular spirit in mind, that you reach out to them. If you don't, this step can be skipped, though I still recommend putting out an offering, so you may want to read it anyway. The easiest way to show how this is done is through an example. Let's say you're reaching out to a passed grandmother who loved makeup. You would say something along the lines of, "I will be speaking to my grandmother, (name, if known) and I've brought some makeup for you." At that point you would put the offering behind the candle, so it's between you and the flame.
O- Candle
*- Offering
Y- You
After the offering is placed, you should light the candle.
Now's your time to meditate- I recommend grounding, centering, and setting up a circuit. (Again, Mat Auryn's "Psychic Witch" has some brilliant information on circuits.) Then, you're good to go! Ask your questions, and use your divination method to find the answer. Trust that the spirit is guiding you.
Ending the Seance:
-Say goodbye, not only does it let the spirit know that the seance is over, but it is just polite! I usually tell them "stay if you will and go if you must," If I like having the spirit around. I forgot where I learned this wording, but I think it fits well here. I'll also have to do a post sometime about the rules I have with spirits that stick around.
-Blow or snuff out the candle (whatever works best for you and your traditions)
-Ground, center, and let go of the circuit (if you created one)
That's it! Congrats on your seance! Cleanse if you want to, but it's not necessary, especially if you had a positive experience. I make sure to do regular cleansings, just to make sure the energy is flowing.
Notes:
If you know the name of the spirit you're trying to contact, it's best to use it.
If you don't know what that particular spirit will like, or you're making a general offering for any spirit who comes to take, clean water is a good choice.
Seances alone are EXHAUSTING. That's totally normal. Take a nap if you need to! If you find yourself too exhausted after seances, try setting up a circuit.
And that's that! Thank you for reading!

Nightshade watched as Nettie rushed to fetch the box. She folded her legs, sitting criss-crossed as Nettie sat opposite her to reveal her most exquisite collection. "oOOoooOOh! Shinies!" the cat-witch cooed with glee, her eyes sparkling with delight.
Her ears tingled from hearing the clatter of stones against each other as well as the wooden inside of the box. And when presented with Nettie's favorite stone, Nightshade's pupils dilated as her smile cut across her face. "Ooh yes please!" Treating it as the treasure that it was, she held it gingerly between her manicured fingers as she inspected it closer in the light. She also loved the sound of her nails tapping on their surfaces, whether smooth or textured. "I can see why this one's your favorite! It's so preeeeeettyyyyy~"
"I've got a lot of shinies back home too!" said Nightshade, looking over to Nettie again. After admiring the quartz, she carefully passed it back to its owner and let her fingers trail gently over the collection. It was faint but she could sense a sort of soothing energy coming from some of the stones. When Nettie mentioned the river, Nightshade remembered the bits she skimmed from Samhain's notes.
She picked one and held it to her eye, looking through it as if it were a magnifying glass. "You've got a good eye for top-tier shinies!"
She had tiny fangs. Kitty fangs, Nettie realized with delight. At the compliment about her own curly hair, a shy giggle escaped the child before she nodded in agreement, her smile brimming with joy. She couldn’t help skipping a bit as they walked.
Sunlight filled Nettie’s room. It shone onto her bed, where leaves and rabbits and flowers patterned a handmade quilt. A trio of stuffed animals leaned against her pillow: a puppy, a bunny, and a kitty. Paper flower cutouts decorated the walls, and strings of fairy lights hung above them. Crayons and wooden animal figurines covered her bedside table.
As soon as they entered the room, an idea struck Nettie, and she rushed to fetch something from atop her dresser. “I want to show you my collection!” All other plans had flown from her mind for the moment.
A rug softened the floor. Nettie sat across from Nightshade and placed a wooden box between them. Someone (a woodsman, perhaps) had carved flowers and bumblebees into it. Nettie adjusted her flower crown before it slipped off her head entirely, then opened the box and turned it toward Nightshade so she could see within. Dozens of shiny stones.
“I got them from the river, mostly,” the girl explained as she dug her fingers into the box, stones clattering against each other. “Um, and some from the trail. I washed all the dirt off.” She plucked a rock from the jumble and presented it to Nightshade, beaming. It was roughly walnut-sized, smooth and glittering with countless specks of rosy and purple quartz. “This one’s my very favorite. You can hold it if you want.”
