One female comedian with dog wants to spread the love in coronavirus lockdown
One female comedian with dog wants to spread the love in coronavirus lockdown
I have received a cry-from-the-heart from comedy performer and social activist Samantha Pressdee.
I think it speaks for itself…
It’s Samantha (Photograph by Nic Harper)
I am trying to stay positive and have launched a new campaign #LoveinLockdown which will be documented in a reality show produced by my social enterprise Love Muffin Productions.
My heart bleeds for all the professionally…

last year's girl's guide to the edinburgh fringe 2017;
last year’s girl’s guide to the edinburgh fringe 2017;
I’d written off any possibility of a trip through to Edinburgh on this busiest of months. It’s too busy, I told myself; too expensive; too overwhelming. And there’s so much on I haven’t a clue what I’d actually go to see… And then I got an email offering me a review ticket for Mexican silent comic Gabriela Munoz’s Perhaps Perhaps… Quizas and spent the next two days scrambling around and booking…

BBUK 18: Friday 9 June
Arthur claims that he and Lotan have "a plan" to deal with the fact that they need to masturbate. Very interested in hearing more of this plan. I'd forgotten the extent to which Channel 5 Big Brother applies the exact same twists and tasks every year. But I like the way they've used them so far this year. Forcing Rebecca to go makeup-free after her argument about makeup with Sukhvinder is great - it means we get to see her confront the issue for real. And maybe it isn't that she thinks makeup looks more professional - it seems she's insecure about her acne, and has built a worldview where makeup is important. I doubt Sukhvinder will give this much thought, but by arguing that Rebecca sets a bad example for insecure young girls, she's actually hit on Rebecca's own insecurities. Big Brother has set a task where housemates must discuss a range of political topics. It's clearly designed to create a big argument. And it is successful. But which topic causes the huge argument? Brexit? Benefits? Immigration? Income tax? In the end, no. It's whether the Earth is flat or round. Arthur is obnoxious here, but also very funny. He says he has a friend who sailed around the world, "And he said the world was round." Did he, Arthur?! Because that's an amazing fact for a sailor to share. "Did you learn anything while you were away?" "Yeah. Turns out if you go west for long enough, you end up in the east. Like in Mario Brothers 2." Sukhvinder storms out of the room. "Don't walk too far that way," says Arthur. "Or you'll fall off the edge." This is so extraordinary. They survived discussing Brexit! They talked immigration without offending anyone! And THIS is what takes them down. They get to vote in the general election today too. "What's the party for the normal people?" asks Chanelle. "Labour?" "The normal people!" laughs Sukhvinder. "Yeah, not the posh people." Chanelle knows what's what. Hope she stays. Emma reveals the stats for the BBUK electoral ward. 6% Lib Dem. 25% Conservative. 69% Labour. Emma then reveals to the house that the UK has a hung parliament, but that Theresa May is still Prime Minister. "I don't understand politics," says one housemate, summing up the 12 hours of Twitter that followed the exit polls. Arthur called Hannah a boring housemate during the Flat Earth Task. Deborah now hates him. I love this. She's so vicious now - this is proper fierce loyalty. It also means Deborah's getting on with Imran. This is a good thing - I was really starting to worry that Sukhvinder and Imran would end up isolating themselves. But Arthur's a common enemy for several of them now. The house is divided between those who tolerate Arthur, and those who refuse to. Or, to put it another way, the white housemates and the POC housemates. Oh, I've worked out who Rebecca looks like! The comedian Samantha Pressdee. Tom fancies the pants off Charlotte. The feeling isn't mutual. Tom thinks Charlotte would let her hair down if her mother wasn't there. I think Tom's misunderstood Mandy. Lotan is teaching Arthur to strip, but I'm not fooled. Marcus didn't warn for nudity. The mechanic for eviction tonight is that Tom will choose to evict one of the two housemates with the fewest votes to save from the public. I'm quietly confident that this is a good system. CHANELLE IS SAFE! Oh, wondrous day! Delighted. Okay, let's see if we can save Sukhvinder next. Safe are Rebecca, Raph - urgh, Lotan. SUKHVINDER! YES! Vote to save is the BEST! And Arthur. Omg, so that leaves Imran and Mandy. That's huge. Imran's the obvious choice for Tom to evict. He's not especially popular in the house, and people love Mandy. But Tom thinks Mandy's presence stops him from being able to get with Charlotte. Argh! I think I'd rather keep Mandy. She's very good value. But I do worry for Sukhvinder if Imran goes. And Tom voted for Mandy. Oh, I'm gutted actually. She was a real laugh. Charlotte's upset. Evicting her mother might not be the most successful act of seduction the house has ever seen. It's always a woman who goes first, isn't it?

Some sexual and sectarian attacks on female comics at the Edinburgh Fringe
Some sexual and sectarian attacks on female comics at the Edinburgh Fringe
Performing at the Edinburgh Fringe is an emotional strain on all performers but, in one way, perhaps more for female performers.
Yesterday’s blog mentioned Samantha Pressdee and her show Covered (in PQA Venues @ Riddle’s Court), which is largely about mental health.
Last night, she posted this on her Facebook page:
My night has ended with the police. I’m very grateful to the transport police.…

Up at the Edinburgh Fringe, anything and everything is possible…
Michael Livesley – after and before
I am not up at the Edinburgh Fringe, but feedback is starting to trickle in.
First-timer Michael Livesley, Half The Man in a comedy show at The Free Sisters about how he lost half his body weight and much else, emailed me, saying:
“The first night went well. No idea what to expect but my hope is…

Edinburgh Fringe, Day 11: The gamut of comedy and the Grouchy Club's origins
Edinburgh Fringe, Day 11: The gamut of comedy and the Grouchy Club’s origins
Today, in three shows, I saw  the whole gamut of Fringe comedy.
There was the gloriously fluent Richard Todd at The Counting House.
He was letting rip at full volume with waving hands, bouncing hair and waterfalls and tsunamis of sentences overflowing with his love of the English language while talking about Monsters within himself and people in general.
There was Narin Oz stripping off as a D…

“Frenzied tit grabbing in Wetherspoons” after throat-slitting at the Grouchy Club
“Frenzied tit grabbing in Wetherspoons” after throat-slitting at the Grouchy Club
Yesterday, performer Samantha Pressdee posted in Facebook: “Frenzied tit grabbing in Wetherspoons, all in the name of feminism, is where last night’s Grouchy Club wound up.”
Critic Kate Copstick and I run The Grouchy Club. This was originally conceived by me as a one-hour chat show for the Edinburgh Fringewhere I would not have to do any advance work – boring things like booking guests and…
