Gideon The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir-
The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.
The Priory of The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens.
The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction – but assassins are getting closer to her door.
Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic.
Across the dark sea, Tané has trained to be a dragonrider since she was a child, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.
Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

Between Gideon the ninth and Priory of the orange tree, it feels like extremely Queer sapphic love stories full of PoC are where high fantasy is at now. The Modern Aragorn is a gay black woman in obsessive love and I'm here for it
Now, i do wish that romances were a little less in focus in my fantasy plots, but honestly, at least this modern crop of fantasy has the romance matter. Better an obsessive character-defining love that shapes the world than a wet fart in the background. The declarations of unending passion and love might get a little much, but at least when Gideon or Ead says something like "i will give you my heart, if it kills me" I can expect that to be the seed of a great quest or a tragedy. Even Jay Kristoff gets this right, even if his books are otherwise, uh.... Not always the best or the best rep.
It's something I wish older fantasy did better. If you need romance, make the passion of your heroes reshape the world. Let your heroes cross the perilous wastes for love. Let them risk all they hold dear to touch their lover one more time. Too much fantasy has Aragorn pining for Arwen with no influence on the plot, or characters hastily getting together at the end. As i said, I'm no huge romance fan, but I infinitely prefer these gay women and their burning passion to that.
