Every few months my brain conveniently misplaces my band class trauma and lack of skill with rock music to think about making a Dumpty Humpty concept album full of songs loosely connected to DP characters and plot events.

my thoughts on the new album!

fate of the faithful- obsessed with the intro, i feel like not only does it set the tone for the song, but for the entire album as well. i LOVE the tone of the guitar in this track, and danny had no right to go that hard. i feel like josh also did a lot of challenging vocals and little riffs here and there which I LOVE. i just love the overall vibe of the song and how all the individual unique parts come together. 

waited all your life- i’m obsessed with the acoustic guitar opening and the way it picks up after that little acoustic intro. josh made the vocal jumps from his lower range to his higher range sound effortless wtf. i can hear sam’s part so clearly and he is literally eating it up, it works so well with the vocals

the falling sky- again, i love the intro. i feel like i can hear a little blues influence in the guitar and especially in the opening. this whole track is super catchy, specifically the chorus, and it’s hard not to sing along. and the fucking harmonica solo omfg. i obviously hear a lot of blues in the harmonica solo and i feel like adding that into the song really separated the whole song not only from the rest of the songs on the album, but from a lot of modern songs. 

sacred the thread- this was probs my fav single they released before the actual album, i love this song sm. i love that it starts with the drums and then the guitar comes in. i’m also obsessed with the bass line, i feel like it works really well with the guitar part while still being unique and shining through in it’s own way. josh literally slayed so hard b/c this is such a challenging song vocally (at least for me b/c im an alto), but he makes it sound and look so easy. the best part of the whole song is towards the end when the vocals and the instrumentals all do the same rhythm while josh sings the lyric, “sacred the thread” (timestamp 4:47). 

runaway blues- I LOVE THE LITTLE SPEAKING THING IN THE FIRST FEW SECONDS OMG! speaking of loving a bass line, i especially adore the bass line in this track. and the fucking guitar solo at the end is so good, it makes me want to cry and scream in the best way possible. i feel like this whole track is so different from a lot of the other stuff they’ve done and that’s probably why i love it so much. 

the indigo streak- definitely one of my favorite song from the entire album omg. THE LAYERED BACKGROUND VOCALS??? HELLO???? i feel like all those background vocals added so much depth and color to the whole song I LOVE IT. starting from the timestamp 2:30, it somehow gets even better??? the guitar tone in the solo is slightly different (i think) from other songs and he plays pretty high up on the neck and it just works so well, i’m obsessed. 

frozen light- the count off in the beginning omfg it’s too much i can’t. love the guitar intro, i hear some blues influence not necessarily in the notes jake is playing, but in his tone. the section right before the chorus is so good don’t even get me started. also love how josh sings about “dreams in gold”!! i feel like i keep saying it, but sam is absolutely KILLING IT WHAT THE HELL??? and in all the songs, but for this one, danny is eating it up what the actual FUCK. 

the archer- again with the guitar intros, i adore this one so much and i love how it feels a bit lighter and then the other instruments come in and it gives it a heavier, deeper, and darker feel. the way that this song transitions into the chorus is so satisfying and works so well. i also love the vocals in this track and i feel like josh got to showcase his wide range a lot here. jake’s solo in this song is definitely one of my favorites from the album. i feel like it can be easy and tempting for guitarists to only play really high up the neck, but he utilized everything which i absolutely love. 

meeting the master- i’ve loved this song so much ever since it first got released and i think my love for it only continues to grow. to me, it really encapsulates the whole album and their new era. everything in this song works so well together and it comes together to create a transcendent track that transports you into an otherworldly head space while listening (at least for me). i really love the lyrics in this song, they’re so beautiful and hold a lot of symbolism and meaning. 

farewell for now- screaming crying throwing up. knowing that they wrote this as an appreciation for the fans makes the listening experience all the more special i feel like. i love the harmonies and similar to ‘the indigo streak’, the layers add so much depth. i love danny’s part leading into the chorus (timestamp 2:00), ITS SO GOOD HELLO??? this is also one of my favorites of jake’s solos from this album, the solo works so well with the rest of the instrumentals, while still bringing in a new vibe and introducing similar motifs from earlier in the song into his solo. the ending is so beautiful, and i love the way it slowly lessens until it’s just josh left. 

final thoughts- wow. it’s hard to put into words how i’m feeling after listening again and really hearing every little thing. i feel like all the tracks are so unique but come together to create an amazing listening experience that leaves you yearning for more (at least for me). just by listening, you can hear how much effort they put into this and how much they have grown. sam’s bass lines were so fucking impressive and while i’m not a bass player, i found myself listening to his part a lot. danny is so incredibly talented and i feel like we really got to hear him showcase his talents in a lot of the fills he did, as well as in some intros or little solos. i really loved how josh used his full range and sang in his lower register. it made it feel even more special and impressive when he went back up to his higher range. jake’s solos and guitar parts kept me on my toes for the whole album. i could hear blues influence in a good amount of his solos and i absolutely adored that. he also played on all parts of the neck and incorporated different tones throughout the album which i thought was really impressive. overall, i am so incredibly proud of them, this album is so special and i’m so impressed. they really did something special and unique with this album and i just love them so much oh my fucking god.

Okay, I gotta say that season 2 was not that bad.

First things first: SKY FINALLY GOT A DECENT HAIRCUT! It was about time.

They totally invested most of their budget on the first two songs (Halsey + Taylor Swift). On the other hand, I think we can all agree that they certainly did not invest on the wings.......

I still think it had nothing to do with Winx Club other than some of the names/places/mentions, but I found it more enjoyable than S1 if considered on its own and not as an adult representation of the cartoon.

Stella was more in character, even though her outfits were still not it. I've already posted her iconic moments, and I'm glad she finally stood her ground with her mother.

Bloom was slightly less annoying (I only checked-off two out of my three "Bloom plays victim" squares!) and Aisha too, even though the fact that they featured Tecna's traits into her is...meh.

Nothing against Sam but, FINALLY, NO MORE MUSAxSAM (someone would've preferred if he had died instead of just leaving lol) and some little interactions between Musa and Riven! Those were probably my fav scenes, I'm soft for them even though they're not their real selves🫶🏼

Terra was...well, very similar to S1 so I don't really have much to say about her. On the other hand, Flora was super not Flora and poor girl was basically introduced only to be traumatized for the rest of her life; however, if we don't compare it to the original, it was a great character.

Beatrix: we spent the whole seven episodes switching between why are you trusting her?! She's evil and omg, she has a heart and is not that bad. I did grow fond of her though, and I'm very much against her ending - even though I don't think it's going to be definitive. I also think they're going to add Icy and Darcy in the next season.

Farah's appearance was...wtf was that?! I still don't understand why and how. I don't know if it's because it was 5am and I was not in my most intuitive moment but the whole thing just did not make sense to me. Also, all the girls went to the woods just to say their final goodbyes and she straight up ignored them and only hugged Bloom💀

I'm glad most of them got to transform even though, again, the investments were clearly not very high on that.

I think that's mostly it, and I'm 1000% sure there's going to be a third season WHERE I DEMAND THEY ADD BRANDON AND GIVE HIM AND STELLA THE AMAZING RELATIONSHIP THEY DESERVE.

I visited my therapist in her family home like ik it's weird to visit your therapist' house but listen she is such a cool person. Also she knows that i major for psych too and that am not willing to self diagnose myself (which she appreciates). Since i am with my nan away from london in shewsbury my therapist' home is near my nan's and so she invited me. She literally travels 2 and half hour most days to work in london because she doesn't want to leave her fam home. Her parents passed away and she isn't ready to sell her childhood house to move to london. But guess what i saw at her house, that mfer had the ltwt london wrist band at her place it was on the shelf & i stopped on my tracks like literally just stood there stuck, my entire world stopped for few mins lol she saw me looking at it and with a bright smile said "yeah i went on his show" i was like "whhhaaaatt" . So basically every time she asked me to talk abt something traumatising that happnd irl i go on my louie mode like once i literally started saying the traumatic event and in between went straight to how louis' music helped me during that time. Coz who wants to talk abt irl shit events when we have louis. Sometimes she'll be like "i like the lad love but you are still not talking how that event has made you feel" (she gets tired when i start my lou talk because she clearly understands that I'm not ready to talk ) So yeah i gave enough share of my louis talks which could have made her listen to Walls & buy tickets to ltwt ig. She said that she didn't want to tell me abt it because she remembered how depressed i was when i wasn't able to attend the donny show + 2 of sam fender's. I asked her fav song and she said defenceless and i was like typical therapist song haha. She said the show was great lou was amazing & that she has listened walls twice after the show. I though she wouldn't like louis because i kept using our time to talk abt him. But she said " that lad has such a sweet soul, what a laidback guy".

So yeah guess my therapist is a louie now lol

Brittana Analysis Part 2: Musical Choices (Smaller Parts in Songs)

Continuing on the Brittana Music Analysis. Part 1 focuses on all of their main songs, but thought it would be good to also mention some of the smaller ones too, their parts in group numbers etc.

So here goes:

Do You Wanna Touch and Touch a Touch a Touch a Touch Me refers to their sexual relationship, back in the days when Santana would only label it as so, and no feelings were allowed.

My Cup, the whole damn song. No explanation needed.

Light Up The World is one of the most meaningful smaller parts for me, because the lyrics are just perfect for them. Santana singing "you and me keep on dancing in the dark, it's been tearing me apart, never knowing what we are etc." is absolutely the Brittana relationship at that point in the series from her perspective. Then we have Brittany singing all about "throw your doubts away", while Artie takes the other line, showing the love triangle dynamic between the three of them. Since this is an original song, I head canon that Santana wrote this part of the song.

Run The World (Girls) is mainly a Brittany solo in line with her presidential campaign, but it's interesting to me that they have Santana sing the "you'll do anything for me" line. Since this song is about Brittany, it's likely Santana is meaning that about her, in that she's acknowledging Brittany will do anything for her. A nice touch because I already touched on in the previous post how Songbird shows Santana implying she'd give Brittany the world. It seems they are both mutual in that aspect.

Rumour Has It/Someone Like You sang in the aftermath of Santana finding out she's been outed, with Brittany and Santana both sharing such a powerful moment together in this song. The transition from Santana singing about finding a girl to her spinning around to look at this girl she's found is such a pivotal moment for them and really well done imo. You can clearly see Santana's fear during this performance, Brittany's too (she too is about to be consequentially outed but I feel her fear is more for Santana than for her own sake), but that moment they share is almost like Santana draws the strength from Brittany. The world is about to find out her secret, but in the same breath her "dreams came true" (as it says in the lyrics) and she's happy with Brittany, so maybe (just maybe) it will all be okay in the end. And guess what Santana? It was.

Constant Craving is mainly about Santana's journey to acceptance, but notice how Santana looks at Brittany when she sings "even through the darkest phase, be it thick or thin, always someone marches brave, here beneath my skin", as if Brittany's own bravery during those hard times gave Santana strength and courage. It's also plausible to say that Brittany was a "constant craving" for Santana.

The First Time implies that Santana felt deeper feelings from the first time she hooked up with Brittany, even though she couldn't accept that at the time. This is later backed up when she admits in 4x04 that she had feelings in Sophomore Year so right back in S1 when they potentially started sleeping together (if not before). While it's obvious what Santana is reflecting on since she sings about "the first time ever I lay with you", it's uncertain whether the flashback scene is from the first time they met or their first hook up, but regardless we see that instant attraction and spark between them from both the scene and the lyrics.

Take My Breath Away and Love You Like A Love Song; the prom songs. Take My Breath Away is pretty self explanatory because the whole song is a love song, and Santana makes sure to sing part of this to Brittany and they share a moment together. Love You Like A Love Song is even more poignant because it's a Santana solo, so it's likely she picked the song. She picked a song all about her girlfriend, but she made sure to pick a current song. That way, in true private Santana fashion, she could pass it off as it just being a crowd pleasing song that everyone loves at the moment. But she does make sure to turn to Brittany and sing to her "constantly, girl you play through my mind like a symphony". Hello lyric change from boy to girl as well, which Brittana always do in their songs with/about each other.

So Emotional while being a duet that symbolises the Pezberry friendship, both Santana and Rachel are singing to their respective partners. They both run over to them for the "I get so emotional baby" part, and although they turn to point at each other for the "every time I think of you" bit, I feel this was just for performance purposes. It's more realistic for Santana to be singing that about Britt, and likewise Rachel with Finn. Santana also points at Brittany for the "I keep your photograph beside my bed" and although we don't know if Santana actually does have a photo of Britt beside her bed, we know that Brittany definitely has one of Santana.

You Get What You Give is naturally an emotional number for them since Santana is having to leave Brittany behind when she should have been graduating with her. Santana runs over to Brittany for the "don't let go" part which could relate to their relationship and not letting go of that despite the obstacles and distance they are ultimately about to face. The "one dance left" part is also significant.

The Scientist has two meanings for me when it comes to Santana's lines when she's singing "Nobody said it was easy etc." in that nobody said that long distance relationships were easy, as well as nobody said that breaking up with Brittany was the easiest choice either. The mature choice, but not the easy one.

There Are Worse Things I Could Do is something Santana merely has to sing in character as Rizzo, but it's clear that she is thinking about Brittany when she sings "but to cry in front of you, that's the worst thing I could do". This off the back of Brittany telling Santana to think of something really emotional to get in character aka. them not being together anymore. It references how Santana could be the one putting on a tough front (Brittany being the one to be more expressive with her feelings in telling Santana how much she misses her and how she wants them to get back together), but deep down her feelings are evident. She clearly misses and loves Brittany, she's just trying her hardest not to show it, because once she gives in that to vulnerability she knows there's no way back.

Toxic the unholy trinity version was rehashed since it was a past performance of theirs, but contextually I do think about the fact they picked that particular number since it was a group song rather than them redoing a performance that just the three of them did. Since Santana is most probably the one who picks the song with it being her idea, it's telling to me that she picks to do a sexually charged routine with the lyrics "I'm addicted to you" etc. It's almost like she wanted to do this sort of routine with Brittany, but uses the guise of Quinn to make it more subtle. As it's also a song about falling for someone dangerously and "it's getting late to give you up", it foreshadows the temptation Santana encounters later when Brittany kisses her and lays everything on the line, even though Santana has a girlfriend. We later see she chooses Brittany, so this could link to the song.

Problem, well the "every time you touch me, and say you love me" line that they sing to each other is pretty self explanatory, but Brittany also sings "cause even though I shouldn't want it, I gotta have it, I want you" which could relate back to their earlier days when Brittany was the one chasing Santana, but could also have a double meaning of Brittany referring to Santana being the one who used to tell her she shouldn't want it, and almost teasing her with that. The playful manner in which they dance to this line, and the wink from Brittany, could be them showing us how far they've come in that the fear of "I shouldn't want it" was very much real for them both at one point, and now no longer is.

Home I think is really poignant for them because that whole performance takes them back to the beginning in their relationship in terms of Santana being homecoming royalty with Puck, and having to revisit all of that. I talk more about it here and how all their S6 scenes paralleled earlier scenes. In this song they sing "man oh man you're my best friend", which links to that whole "going back to the start thing" in showing how it all began, since best friends is how they started out. It's also how they've always remained throughout their relationship and even during their break up, and something they've always said to each other first and foremost, and I believe at times they said this when they weren't brave enough to say I love you (Santana in 2x22) or when they were restricted in saying it (4x13 when they clearly still loved each other but Brittany was with Sam).

You Learn/You've Got A Friend is actually one of my fav Glee performances, and I think the Brittana moment in this is super sweet and underrated. I always love how as soon as Santana walks in, Brittany gets straight up to join her and stand by her side. She can't get to her fast enough. Lyrically, their lines fit this because Santana sings "close your eyes and think of me, and soon I will be there" on her own, and it's almost as if Brittany was sitting and thinking about her since they are apart, but as she thought of her, Santana appeared. They then begin singing together about brightening up even the darkest nights for each other, something that I'm sure they've both done a lot of. The way they sing that line when they are reunited (not that I think they were apart for very long haha) is almost as if being around each other brightens up everything. The whole song is obviously about living, loving and learning, something they've definitely had experience of all 3 of, and they make reference to that in their gestures throughout the song.

At Last is one that I'm going to talk about since they picked it as their wedding song. It's also one that doesn't need much analysis. It was a very fitting song for them, because even though they got married young, their relationship was still very "at last", this is where we are. It took them so long to get there. Santana's denial, the love triangle with Artie, the grey area of not labelling things even though they were already acting like they were dating, the pain of Santana's outing, the long-distance, the break up, Sam, MIT, Dani, Santana being scared to get back with Brittany at first. But it's kinda like what Brittany says in their vows, she would have suffered it all just for the tiny chance of marrying Santana, and undoubtedly Santana would "1000 times yes" do the same. "At last the lonely days were gone", and they got their happy ending. I also really like the lyric "And life is like a song" because it could relate back to Songbird "and the songbirds are singing like they know the score". This on makes my heart happy, it was the perfect choice for them ❤️

Hey Ya! & last but not least I couldn't not talk about their other wedding song choice, Hey Ya! This is a pretty typical song to play at weddings, gets everyone up dancing, it's feel good etc. That's probably the reason that Brittany and Santana picked it (also fitting with what I said about them keeping private mushy moments to themselves and picking a more up beat first dance song that everyone can join in for the actual wedding). But the writers obviously picked it as a nod to Heather and Naya with it being their final episode, and to humour the Heya fandom.

A/N: This was so soft it almost killed me to write...the next chapter will be...not as soft. This song is by far my favourite off of the album (let me know what your fav song is plz) ALSO I should mention you do not need to be familiar with the song/ Album to read this!!!

You wake up confused, the feeling familiar by now, you lay in bed and stare up at the fluorescent lights, the same as the past few days. The pain is unbearable as if they are holding back on the pain meds, not only do they not trust you, they think you are here to do something wrong to Bucky, their Bucky. Now you start to think they want to hurt you, it’s like torture but not so obvious. Bruce comes every now and then and checks on your stitches, you should have healed by now, if it wasn’t for their stupid poison. The nurse barely comes near your room when you are awake, Bruce is the only one who checks on you, aside from Wanda and Nat, they are nice and you don't mind their company, but you wished you could leave, or that Winter would visit instead.

He is gentle though, Bruce, he has a kind heart, perhaps sympathetic and understanding towards being created and turned into a monster you can't control. You ask him for more painkillers, he tells you they only have regular ones, the higher strength ones are off sight, on backorder or whatever excuse he gets told by Tony to tell you this time.

A tear escapes your eyes and you bite down hard on your tongue trying to stop yourself from crying. You had been so far away from Winter for so long and now he was in the same building as you and he didn’t want you, trust you, love you. So the pain becomes overbearing, which says a lot about the strength of the poison versus your super-soldier serum.

You’re lying flat on the bed when someone knocks on the door, which you think is a bit silly since most people usually walk right in. Wanda waits a minute and then creaks the door open peaking in.

“Hey,” she says quietly and you sit up in the bed, fixing your pillows.

“Hi,” you reply, not trying to sound so bitter, just tired.

“So... as I mentioned the other day, my abilities. I want to use them to help you. It will be a very different method than how we helped Bucky but I think we can really dig deep into your memories, piece them together. And once Bucky warms up to the idea, we can do the same to him.” She explains calmly as she sits in a chair that she’s pulled up beside your bed. She doesn't make you get up, or move, she can tell you are in pain. She isn’t sure why Tony has them holding back your meds, maybe it’s a test. 

“Okay, so how does this work?” You ask and she continues.

“I'm going to ask you to dig deep in your mind, we are going to start with a happy memory, preferably one about Bucky, something significant, whatever comes to mind. I am going to tune into your mind with my powers. It’s best to keep your eyes closed and stay focused. Don't focus on hiding things from me, or shying away from any memories for any reason.” She says sternly and you panic at the thought of her seeing everything you and Bucky did together...everything.

“The only downside is anyone who is nearby might also get the memories projected into their minds as well because I’m not great at controlling this power yet, so if you are willing to do this we can, but if you don't want to we don't have to.” She grabs your hand, she’s patient, she has these kind sad eyes and you wonder what causes that sadness.

“My memories have never really been just my own, and I’m past the point of caring. If you think this will help then I’m all in.” You almost say that you have nothing to hide, but then you realize you very much do. You have many memories of Winter, the thought of looking back on those specifically, having to share those with someone beside you and Winter hurts, it breaks your heart almost. Those memories, of you falling in love, the soft intimacy that was your life with him, behind the rough and tough scenes of your Hydra life. 

You would rather those stay between you and Winter, but since Winter isn’t ...here right now… you have to accept letting someone else in, sharing them, a piece of your heart with a new friend isn’t so bad really. You just hope no one lingers in the hallways...spying on your mind. The thought sends a shiver down your spine.

“So once I have an understanding of your memories, the timeline, then I can go through Bucky’s mind and piece things together sort of if that makes sense. I’ll explain more if we can even get that far. Think of this as therapy sort of too, I can help you heal from your past traumas.”

“Sounds good enough to me, assuming he will cooperate.”

“He will eventually, he just needs time I think,” Wanda assures you and grabs your hand again.

You know that there is a two-way mirror in your room, they told you about it and the security cameras. You don't really care, you’re used to it, Hydra had the same set up on you, just a window instead of a mirror, at least now you can pretend no one is there.

On the other side of the mirror, Nat stands patiently, eager to learn more. Sam and Steve said they would stop by but didn’t care enough to stand there for the entire ...process? Bruce and most of the others stayed away, not wanting to get into your personal business. Nat was to report anything important to Tony because he obviously had better things to do.

Bucky was told he should come, that watching would maybe help him remember but he had said he wasn’t going to.

You close your eyes tight and try to think of a happy memory, you try to distract yourself and hope it works. Your mind plays over your dream from last night, going over the events so Wanda can see them and then it continues on, you quickly get lost in it.

After you admitted your love for him it took a long time for him to warm up to the thought, the idea of you and him. 

The idea always seemed so far away, unrealistic, but it’s when you’re on a mission together in Paris, held up in a hotel room that his mindset changes drastically.

The mission is simple, and you’re unsure why they sent both you and Winter together, you had been told of this mission months ago. You were supposed to handle it alone, and a few others prior to this but every mission you went on Winter had been at your side. Perhaps the first mission going so wrong was the reason they hadn’t grown to trust you on your own.

There’s a highbrow event going on in the building across the street, you’re waiting for the target to arrive but the party has been postponed by four hours for “security reasons” which makes you laugh inside. Unless they can bulletproof the air between the limos and the door, their security is almost useless. The time change doesn't really matter either, whether it’s light or dark outside Winter is a perfect shot with a sniper. This just means you have some spare time alone, completely alone with him.

You’re sitting side by side on the 20th-floor balcony, with your backs pressed against the ledge, his fingers interlocked in yours, resting on your thigh. He holds your hand a lot now, ever since he first did when he brought you to that room with the windows. It’s simple but comforting. He has this nervous flicker in his eyes every time he holds your hands, his eyes travel from your hands intertwined, to your eyes to process your reaction and then he quickly looks away.

“I always wanted to go to Paris.” You admit after feeling the thought, the want come from deep within your subconscious.

“Really? Does it live up to its expectations.”

“Not really, this hotel room doesn't do it justice, I want to see everything, experience everything. But I guess just being here, and being here with you is good enough.” You say, you found he quite likes when you say nice things to him, about him, he likes compliments, lives for praise, what good soldier doesn't?

“Maybe we can live here one day,” he suggests and it’s so out of character for him, but he’s love drunk, he is hopeful for a future with you and it slips out before he can take it back and you’re off and running with it.

“That’d be nice, we could have a little place of our own, we could decorate it for Christmas time like that safehouse you mentioned in Washington, we could leave the Christmas lights up till January, it’d be our own house we could make the rules!” He nods, a wide smile on his face in agreement, you both sit in silence imagining the better life you both deserve.

There is a raw honesty that you bring out in him, his usual cold exterior melts around you and he can’t help himself but gush his feelings, they overwhelm him and he has to share.

“I feel like I’ve known you forever, we just fit so well. I feel like my whole life, the parts I remember and the ones I don't, have led to me meeting you.”

The confession makes your heart skip a beat. You move to sit on his lap as you lean your chest against his.

“We are a good team. I always wanna do missions with you, I wanna go where you go, I don’t wanna be apart from you for even a second,” you say quietly to him, your face so close to his he can feel your breath on his lips, your noses almost touching. He wants to kiss you, do so many other things but he also feels it might be too soon.

As he looks over your lips he thinks for a moment, this can wait until another time, a better time when he isn’t counting the minutes on the clock until he has to kill someone. But he doesn't know when a better time will be when they can be alone again like this, no hiding or sneaking around.

You are thinking about similar things. You want him, you need him now and you don't know when you’ll get another chance so you kiss his lips softly which seems to snap him from his thoughts. He quickly kisses back, his surprise fades quickly as he now focuses on the task at hand. His tongue slides into your mouth so expertly, his hand’s cup your cheeks and yours runs through his hair messing it up.

He is torn between never wanting to move and also wanting to pick you up and carry you to the bed that has loose bullets sitting on the soft satin covers. Since you’re on his laps it’s oh so easy for him to ultimately decide to lift you up, his hands grab your thighs as he stands on wobbly legs, nerves itching at his skin. He kneels against the edge of the bed, still holding you up as he uses his free hand to clear the bed and then gently place you down.

You say sweet things to him as you undress him, he hovers above you and smiles against your skin before he kisses it. You crane your neck to kiss up and along his jaw while you peel your own tight tac gear off as well, throwing your knife from your hip into the wall and sliding your gun across the floor. Your belt clicks as you take it off and he imagines being here with you on vacation instead, flowy dresses and champagne and flowers in your hair, no weapons or skin-tight tactical outfits.

He likes the thought of it and he’s mesmerized by his own ideas until he is stunningly brought back to reality. You have flipped positions, you on top of him straddling his calves, with your mouth on his cock. Your back is arched unbelievably and you look up at him with wicked eyes. HE grips the satin sheets in his hands almost ripping them as he tried to regain some composure, some control.

It’s rough and passionate until Winter flips you onto your back and kisses every inch of your skin he can reach, it’s a complete 180 in the mood. It’s loving and slow and sensual as butterflies fill your stomach. But at the same time a fight for power, two strong soldiers wanting to call the shots.

He climbs on top of you, spreading your legs with his knee and then sliding inside gently, he pushes in slowly, rhythmically like he has all the time in the world.

“Can we always be this close.” You whisper in his ear and he grunts a bit before answering back.

“Forever.”

You let out a high pitched moan, his featherlight touches setting your skin ablaze as he hits every spot deep within you. His kisses are soft on your lips and cheeks while his thrusts are deep and slow.

You thought he’d be more rash, more violent and rough with you given the nature of him, but you’re happily surprised to find him sweet and caring, a tentative lover that wants nothing more than to please you right now. Make you feel good.

“Win-Winter,” you stutter like a question but you have nothing to ask him. He replies by bringing his lips to yours, forceful but not rough in his motions, tounges melding together, mouth moving with each thrust as he kisses across your face like he can’t get enough of you.

It isn’t long before he feels himself nearing his end, he wraps his hands around you and under your back pulling you as tight against him as he can while still thrusting desperately into you. He comes with a grunt, his mouth pressed against the skin behind your ear, he continues to thrust into you, you feel the coil in your stomach tighten as you follow him into bliss, a comforting numbness washes over you and you try to revel the ethereal feeling of being held so tightly, slick skin on skin.

You lie like that for a while, his weight sort of crushing down on you but you don't complain, you completely forget about the target who could be arriving at the Gala downstairs at any moment. It’s somehow unimportant right now. Bucky for once is not concerned either, his brain isn’t short-circuiting at the thought of not following orders, a failed mission is worth staying here in your arms forever. You trace patterns lightly on his skin, trace the lines of his metal arm that feel cool on your fingertips. Somehow you both end up on your sides, still holding each other just as close.

“Promise me something?” You whisper, your lips brushing against his bare shoulder as you speak.

“Yeah?” He asks.

“You’re mine right, over everything else I have you?” You ask and you’re scared to ask such a defenceless question.

“Of course,” he quickly agrees, like it’s a small feat to admit that he puts you above Hydra, above everything he’s trained and been brainwashed to do. He’s not sure how he does it either. How you turn the cold soldier’s icy heart warm, how you make him defy his coding. And he feels just as bare. He wants more than anything to be completely candid with you. “If we could get married I’d marry you right now,” he says with full confidence.

“Really?” You ask and he feels your smile against his shoulder.

“Of course,” he repeats.

And with that, you leave his hold and kneel up on the bed, turning to face him. “I Spring, take thee, Winter, to be my, to be mine…” you trail off looking for a good word.

“Your Boyfriend, husband?” he asks, a shy smile on his face that makes him look like a handsome normal young man, if not for the moonlight glistening off his metal arm.

“No those are wrong, too formal and they sound like they don't fit. I like, I like something like. Lover.” She says it as if she’s still thinking but that one fits so well, she falls back down onto him, landing on his chest and then squirming up on the bed until her lips ar at the back of his ear, she kisses, sucking the skin and biting playfully before practically purring in his ear.

“Loverrr.”

Suddenly you snap out of your mind and are thrown back to the present with a pounding headache, tears brim your eyes and you gasp sitting forward. Wanda stands and takes your hands leaning closer to you. She appears lost for words.

“Spring I, that was... if I had any doubts before they would be completely gone. I can feel your heartbreak, your sadness. I can tell from what I saw that you really loved him.”

“Was that helpful?” You almost whisper.

“It’s a good start,” she says as she rubs her hands on your back, looking at the ceiling, trying to settle her own mind and emotions.

She continues to talk about other things, to distract you and calm your mind.

On the other side of the two-way mirror, Nat is sat with her hand covering her open mouth, clearly a bit shocked at the experience.

“That was…” She says and trails off shaking her head, to rid her mind of what she just saw.

“A lot,” Sam finishes for her. “I feel dirty for seeing that.”

Steve is quiet for a few minutes as he thinks over what he just saw. “She isn’t in love with The Winter Soldier, the one we faced. She’s in love with Bucky. The person we saw there was Bucky, a bit of the Bucky I used to know and a little bit of the Bucky we know now just sort of diluted.”

“They were both brainwashed to be perfect soldiers and somehow they still...managed to fall in love,” Nat says almost shaking her head in disbelief.

“So what now?” Sam asks unsure of where this puts them.

“I still don't 100% trust her, she’s been brainwashed before, for all we know those memories could be fake. We don't know the validity of them until Bucky can remember the same events if Wanda can find the same memories in his mind. But for now...I think she at least deserves to stop having her pain meds held back so she can heal properly. I'm going to talk to Tony.”

“So same time next week?” Sam jokes and Steve glares at him before they leave the room and go separate ways.

Ever since I started dating Ashton, I knew that our relationship wouldn't be the typical kind. And obviously, I wasn't mistaken. Ashton never follows the rules, never falls into the stereotypes. So, when this year he planned the typical valentine's day date, I felt out of my waters. "Ash?" I ask him, observing his behavior. "Yes, princess?" He asks me back. "Are you feeling ok?" I ask him, earning a weirded-out look from my boyfriend. "Yes... Why are you asking?" "What are all of these?" "Um, those are called ballons, this is a teddy bear... T-E-D-D-Y/B-E-A-R... and we are in a restaurant. Are you ok, princess?" He mocks me, chuckling softly as he reaches for my hand with his free hand. "I am aware of the objects. What I am talking about is the fact that you did all of that. It isn't like you." I say, making Ashton leave his fork and knife on his plate while sighing. "Look, I know that this is strange and all, but... (Y/N), I am tired of all your friends bragging about their dates and their boyfriends treating them like princesses, I didn't want you to feel any less of." He responds, rubbing the top of my hand with his thumb. "Baby... This is so sweet... But who told you that I am feeling any less than a princess whenever we do our thing? I am so happy that we go to museums instead of boring dinner dates... I mean, yeah, this is great but we don't need balloons and teddy bears to celebrate our love. We do our own thing." I state making him smile. "Let's ditch all of that. We have better places to be." He says, motioning to the waiter to bring the check.

Calum: “I love the light in your eyes and the dark in your heart” Following every cliche in romantic movies, the only thing covering my body as I walk out of the bedroom is Calum's shirt. I look around for Calum but find no evidence of him in the living room. I take slow steps towards the open door that leads to the patio, getting a glimpse of my boyfriend's back from where I stand. I get close to him as quiet as I can, the closer I get, the louder the chords he plays on his guitar get. I sit across him, trying not to interrupt him. "A penny for your thoughts..." I say after a while of just sitting and watching him. "Trust me, love, I don't even know what goes on inside my head." He says, setting the guitar on the ground. "Wanna talk about it? You know I love listening to you talk..." I say, going to sit next to him. Calum looks at me sweetly, but his eyes are sad, clouded by something I can't tell. "Nothing to talk about, really..." He says, scooting me over next to him. "Cal, every time that I spend the night at your place, or you stay at mine, you are never on the bed when I wake up. And almost always, I find you here, playing music, or scribbling on a piece of paper on my couch. Something clearly bothers you, and I start to think that maybe it is me..." I say, placing my hand on his cheek. "Baby, I promise, it is not you... I can guarantee that... Just... I am scared..." He says, looking at his hands and shrugging. "Of what?" I ask, pushing his chin up to take a better look into his eyes. "I am scared that you might find all of this, all of me, too much, get scared and leave." He says. I stare at him surprised, stroking his face as I try to form words. "Why would I get scared?" I ask. He takes my hand in his, rubbing his thumb softly over my skin. "I don't know...You might realize my strangeness and leave..." He says and I chuckle. "I love you Calum... For your strangeness, your darkness, your all. For the good moments and the bad moments... For whatever it is to come. I love you." I say, leaning my head on his chest. "I love you, angel." He replies and pecks on the tip of my nose.

Luke: Got nothing but love for you fall more in love every day

"I thought you would go out with the guys." I say, the moment I see Luke sitting on my bed, wearing the grey sweats he has left on my house and nothing else. I dry my hair with the towel, sitting on the other side of the bed, my back facing him. I peek at him through the mirror, only the moments he is not looking at me. "I decided to stay here tonight..." He says. A part of me is happy that he stayed in, especially after fighting over that; but another part of me doesn't want to see him, at least not for the rest of the night. "How come?" I ask, picking up my hairbrush. I watch him shrug and leave the book he had picked from my night table down. "Solving this seems more important." He states, sitting on his knees. "I thought that nothing is more important than your friends." I reply bitterly. I watch him roll his eyes before he rubs his temples. "Priorities change." He replies, making me cock an eyebrow. "Oh, now I am a priority?" I ask, sitting up and placing my hands on my waist. "Yes, you are." He sighs. "And why is that?" I ask. "Because I fucking love you." He snaps, sitting up as well. "What did you just say?" I ask, taking a moment to process the words. "I said I love you. I've been falling for you more and more every passing day and it kills me that you keep pushing this fight." He says, taking deep breaths after he finishes his sentence.  I stare at him like a deer in the light of an oncoming car.  "Fuck..." I murmur under my breath, approaching him for a hug. "I love you too, you asshole." I whimper as he buries me in his chest.

Michael: It don't matter just as long as I get all you tonight.

"Just tell me that you were able to find someone to cover your shift for tonight." Michael says into the phone the moment I pick it up. "Hello to you as well. " I mumble. "Yes, right. Hey babe. Just tell me that you were able to find someone to cover your shift." He says and I laugh at how cute he is when he is panicking. "Relax, I did. I got Sam to cover for me and I will work his night shift on Saturday." "Thank God." He sighs. "You realize that I sacrificed my weekend for you, right?" I ask and he chuckles. "Angel, honestly, I am all yours and you are all mine for tonight and the whole day tomorrow, I couldn't care less about a weekend shift... Now, wear something nice for me tonight, ok princess?" He says in his low voice, making me bite my lip. "I promise I will... Gotta go, see you tonight..." "Love you princess..."

REALLY want a dad hug from him. colin firth is iconic as always and gains millions of points for being a full disaster gay. doesn't seem to have a partner unlike musical harry which is sad. also a slightly more contentious with donna in the beginning of the film and so loses the our last summer scene which tbh is the thing i hate most abt the film adaptation but moving on

film bill: genuinely don't remember anything about him from the first film. doesn't look super dad-like but I guess that's part of the whole playboy character. stellan skarsgård is great but film bill just doesn't do anything for me sorry stellan.

young sam: possibly unpopular opinion but even more bland and boring. genuinely could not care less about this boy. boring voice. this is not my fav from the musical.

young harry: !!!! a special awkward boy, closeted disaster but trying his best, still very sweet, asks a pretty girl to sleep w him bc he's a virgin, sensitive, great dance moves. 80s gay fashion. lots of fun would absolutely be best friends with

young bill: gorgeous. incredibly hot. angelic face. charismatic. has the sexiest song in the musical. great clothes. and THEN turns up to make sure donna was ok alone on a random island. the best young dad.

IN CONCLUSION every dad gets a chance to be the best dad (musical: sam, film: harry, young: bill), but harry maintains the most consistent quality throughout thanks for coming to my ted talk

1. What episode/season of Supernatural was the first that you watched alongside the fandom on Tumblr? It has to be 11x11 Into the Mystic, because i joined tumblr after 11x10 aired. The Devil in the Details made me fall for this show again, so for the first time I was in desperate need for more fandom content. 

2. What’s your favourite Supernatural season? What’s your least fav.? Why? Season 13? :) Ok, probably season 12. I love how they changed it up and mirrors became broken mirrors and the overall feeling of hope for the light at the end of the tunnel took over. (I loved the second half of season 11 as well, especially the fact that Amara didn’t die, but the whole God business is just kinda whatever for me) I love(d) seasons 4/5, but  they’re extremely depressing. They had this caged feel, no hopeful or positive option or exit, no room to breathe, like buried alive. So, for that reason i can’t say they’re my favourite. I don’t really want to rewatch that time period, no matter how great the episodes are.

Least favourite? Season 6. It had too many things scattered all over the place and they ended up breaking viewers’ hearts. The audience was deceived the same way Dean was, we only had one episode from Cas’s point of view and by the end of it i just felt betrayed. (betrayed enough to take a break from watching it in season 7, which wasn’t actually a bad season)

3. When did you start shipping Dean/Cas? Any particular moment/aspect of the story that made you do it? If you had the power, how would you choose to canonize it? It happened without me noticing it, the same way they fell in love. I was the general audience, without really caring what kind of relationship they have, but loving their scenes together. I actually think it was some crack video on YouTube that made me see it clearly (i used to watch them before joining tumblr, s 10-11 hiatus). I can’t pinpoint the moment, i only know i had no idea what shipping is prior to season 11 and when i found out i just knew i’d always shipped them and that’s why i had the urge to hide my face during 8x07 for example.

How would i make it textual (cause they kinda are canon)? I don’t think i have a preference. They have so much history that it could work in different ways. I want them to use words though. Even if it’s a confession to someone else, i want it to be clearly spelled out for the audience before they crash their mouths together.

4. For Supernatural, if you write fic./make art (or both), what’s something that you’ve created that you wished more people would read/see? If you don’t write fic./make art, what’s a fic./art piece that you feel deserves more attention?  I’ve only written a few codas for Supernatural. And then there’s Shading Identity, which is a cross-over with Numb3rs and doesn’t have a lot of activity. It’s not half bad, but i haven’t updated since August. (Go someone leave me a comment and i’ll scribble the next chapter! :))  As of recommendations i made a post a while ago, should probably make another soonish though.

5. Which Supernatural character are you most like and why? Which character is your favourite and why? If i’m very honest, then probably Sam. I hide my feelings very well and I don’t talk about them. At the same time i’m a bit like Dean as well, cause i tend to suppress myself and do what’s expected of me. Obviously i can be like Cas too, with the feeling as if you don’t really belong. A bit of everyone really. Maybe that’s why i don’t have a favourite either. (though after 13x03 i’d go for Jody, she truly is pretty amazing. good people :))

6. What’s a nightmare that you had that you can never forget? What happened in it that made you so afraid? So, i was sleeping over at my friend’s place. I knew she had problems with nightmares (the classic demon sitting on your chest trying to take over thing) and ghosts stay close to her (i have no idea how real it is, but that’s what she’s told me). Ok, we were sleeping in the same bed, at some point i woke up and i saw her nightmare. This dark entity that had no interest in me and tried to get to her, but since i was in the way it couldn’t. I wasn’t really sure what to make of it in the morning, it seemed so real.  About half a year later i had a nightmare about her, how she was convinced that a little girl was possessed and wanted to kill her. I woke up in cold sweat. I wrote to her, asking if she was okay cause i’d had a dream about her (i quite often write to people when i’ve had a vivid dream about them). And she had had a nightmare the same night, about a girl with black holes as her eyes. But no, i haven’t had true nightmares of my own.

7. What’s an embarrassing thing that happened to you that you find hilarious looking back on? Or alternatively, what’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you, regardless of whether it’s hilarious now or not? I changed schools before 10th grade, didn’t know anyone, had only seen my classmates once and i don’t have a good memory for faces. We were divided in groups for English classes and so there were several room numbers for them in the time plan. I was late, didn’t know which room to go to, took a guess and opened a door. No one really said anything so i figured it was the right one, started to take a seat, take out my things when someone finally said: “You do know it’s 12th grade, right?”

8. What is one thing that someone’s said that stuck with you? Why did it stick? I just keep remembering negative things... Oh, my math teacher said after giving back the statistics test that i was an extremely brave girl. I have no idea what he meant by that, maybe the fact that i started the solution in one way, but kept messing up and had to start again, but instead of doing it the other way i used the one i had decided on... i don’t know, but i got an A so that’s good.

9. What is one issue (global, social-justice-related or something along those lines) that is important to you? Why? Kids allowed to be kids and themselves. Just 18 years of a person’s life can mess up decades and decades of their future. 

10. What is one thing that you wish that you could change about yourself? Why? I wish i had more self confidence and courage to be honest and true to my feelings even if it leads to a conflict with others.

11. What was the last thing that put a smile on your face and made your heart twinge with happiness? The ending of 13x05. No, really! I’ve smiled and laughed since then but my heart hasn’t twinged with happiness like that. I’m trying to remember the last time... probably when i was performing my poetry/songs and it was well received. Kind of creates this amazing atmosphere and electricity, some kids actually believing i was a witch. Last time i was happy was when i published my book.  My questions:

Favorite Kiss Scene: Reply 1988 (2015)             Let’s be real: there are a lot! However, this is the most recent, and Park Bo-Gum looks like such a great kisser. Truthfully, I just want to be kissed by him. Yet, it can only be just a dream.

Most Pitiful Second Lead: 14th prince (Scarlet Heart)              I don’t know if he is considered the second male lead, but I can’t believe how loyal he is to stay by her side even though she doesn’t love him and takes on the responsibility of raising her daughter. My heart breaks for him. He deserves to find love.             I haven’t watched this drama in its entirety so I don’t feel right writing it, but the second male lead looks like he will crash and burn hard in ‘She was Beautiful’.

Most Evil Parent: Lady Hwa-Young (Princess Hours aka Goong)             I watched this so long ago and don’t remember much of it besides the cute teddy bears and the mother being crazy evil.

Best Jewelry: Kissing Star Necklace (Boys over Flowers)             I don’t know why, but this was the first answer that popped into my head. Also, I didn’t watch this drama, but supposedly the necklace showed up in ‘Love Rain’ as well.

  Best Stuff Animal: Pig Rabbit (You’re Beautiful)             This is seriously one of the few k-drama merch that I actually own. My first pig rabbit keychain broke, and I actually went and bought a replacement.

Most Action Pack: Iris (2013)             Frankly (and I don’t know why), I don’t think I finished this drama, but I do remember there being a lot of action.

Funniest:             There are so many. Right now, I am laughing my ass off with My Lovely Kim Sam-Soon. I remember laughing a lot with Princess Hours. I think the entire Reply series is hilarious. It’s too hard to choose just one because there’s a comedic aspect in all k-dramas. I apologize for leaving this one blank for now.

Saddest: Autumn in my Heart (2012)             Oh gosh, I don’t even remember the specifics of the story anymore. I just remember crying buckets and buckets of tears.

Scariest: Master’s Sun (2013)             Horror is a genre I tend to avoid, but the ghosts in this drama were quite scary.

Best Movie: My Sassy Girl (2001)             You know it’s good when Hollywood tried to remake it and China puts out a sequel. It had all the feels and more. As someone who doesn’t re-watch, I’m proud to have seen this movie twice. An extremely close second that deserves a shout out is in my book is: ‘He was Cool’.  

Most Disappointing: Big (2012) and Playful Kiss (2010)             With BIG, the cast was great (and I mean Gong Yoo is in it), but the ending fell flat and left so many questions were left unanswered. It was just riddled with plot holes.             With Playful Kiss, the Taiwanese one was just too beloved in my heart, so the Korean one couldn’t match.

Did Not Finish: Bubblegum (2015)             I just lost motivation. I love the main leads though, but there was something lacking in the story. I’m sorry. 

Every time I think it is the end, I come up with a new category and answer, but it’s time to stop.  I might do a part two next time. With that, here is my “Everything K-drama Tag!”

Column: Favorite Rap Mixtapes of November & December 2018

With a cascade of releases spewing from the likes of DatPiff, LiveMixtapes, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud, it can be difficult to keep up with the overbearing yet increasingly vital mixtape game. In this column, we aim to immerse ourselves in this hyper-prolific world and share our favorite releases each month. The focus will primarily be on rap mixtapes — loosely defined here as free (or sometimes free-to-stream) digital releases — but we’ll keep things loose enough to branch out if/when we feel it necessary. (Check out October’s installment here.) Soooooo many dope mixtapes these past two months that even as TMT’s year-end coverage wrapped up like gifts bursting from Santa’s sack, our squad still jumped at the chance to pile on some final blurbs of 2018 before the ball-drop. “Overbearing?” Maybe. “Hyper-prolific?” Definitely. Multiple puns in that first sentence? Two for the price of one, hon. To that, before we get into our November and December favs, here are some “honorable mentions” that didn’t get a write-up below but are no less deserving of a spin this New Year’s Eve: Semiratruth - WAIT!, Demahjiae - Ghetto Blessings, SPNDA x Kae Tea - Mosaic EP Lil Durk - Signed to the Streets 3, City Girls - Girl Code, The Diplomats - Diplomatic Ties, Roc Marciano - Pimpstrumentals, Grimm Doza & SpaceGhostPurrp - The Haunting in New Jersey, Wiardon - Numba1Viktim, Chris Crack - Just Gimme A Minute and Thanks Uncle Trill, Bloodmoney Perez - Time is a Motherfucker, CL King - Waiting 4, and Defcee - A Mixtape As God Intended, Vol. 1 … also, three (!!!) Young Thug leaks. –Samuel Diamond --- Red Daughter, Trap Funk & Alivio - Red Funk Alivio 2 [STREAM] It’s mixtapes like this one that have us quietly missing the days when the word “rap” wasn’t in this column’s title. W/o wasting too many words justifying this tape’s inclusion, let’s just say rap is a big part of it. But so too are Afrocentrism, feminism, indigenous pride, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Brazil, baile funk, Jersey club, house, footwork, and many more elements than an admittedly limited worldview can readily identify. One hesitates to revisit clichés like the dance after the revolt or “if this doesn’t get you moving, you’re already dead,” but, well, while Google Translate tells us that alivio is Portuguese for relief, our ears, eyes, and noses tell us that the club is flooding with oppressor blood. If you missed the first drop, catch up. –Samuel Diamond --- Tommy Genesis - Tommy Genesis [STREAM] We the undersigned/unwashed jabberers at TMT have a tastynasty habit of measuring years out in loosely-themed song mixes. I bet some super astute comment section glob thinks it’s an arbitrary habit. I humbly submit that when we cycle artifacts through a series of spaces, patterns emerge. Assumptions get split. Moods and usages cross and swerve. The exceptional artifacts fit every space. Tommy Genesis, the Vancouver rapper’s debut album, pumps blood and caresses muscles like GYM, cycles want until it subsumes self, a party in the VOID. “Drive” flecks acoustic strings at the CLIFF’s edge and Charlie Heat’s ballast production on “Play With It” turns the ALLEY concave, sends come-on invocations city-wide, supercharged fuel for the COUPE. Tommy Genesis sounds like a whole damn year — wanting more is loving living. –Frank Falisi --- Peewee Longway - State of the Art [STREAM] A glaring omission from our Favorite Cover Art feature (putting him at two for the year), State of the Art finds Peewee Longway rapping as well as he ever has, retaining his distinctive style while adapting to the ever-evolving sound of the moment. Longway’s sound has always tracked the mainstream not directly but as a point of divergence; while likely not distinct enough to make him anyone’s absolute favorite rapper, he’s well-positioned for the reliable production of quality, personable raps. State of the Art is split between showpieces for relatively stock guest spots from the likes Gucci or members of Migos, and far more idiosyncratic one-offs; “Lets Be Real” (with Maxo Kream) is a Molly anthem reminiscent of some of Longway’s stranger inclinations, while “Top of the Bank” marries an Otis Redding interpolation and a cooing, celebratory hook without either seeming out of place. Longway’s more likely to retire from rap (yet again) than blow up any time soon, but State of the Art is more than enough proof that the roundest rapper working has got plenty left to give. –Corrigan B --- Adé Hakim - On To Better Things [STREAM · DOWNLOAD] In a year of SlumsNYC triumphalism — see the series of landmark releases by navy blue, King Carter, MIKE et al., culminating with Earl Sweatshirt’s Some Rap Songs — Adé Hakim a.k.a. Sixpress has been like a silent partner to the movement. Featured on most of the aforementioned and having released a couple of short but no less notable mixtapes on his own this year, Hakim closes out an already-headway-making 2018 with his most complete and progressive work to date in the aptly titled On To Better Things. Low-key, high-impact beats, rhymes, and life insights from the birthplace of hip-hop coalesce here in a freely collective but clearly self-defined gestalt. Where do we go from this? Just listen. –Samuel Diamond --- AJ Suede - Darth Sueder II: Goth Marciano [STREAM] Don’t let your current intake of “lo-fi” hip-hop begin and end with Earl’s latest album. Rapper/Producer AJ Suede has perfected his own take on the subgenre with his latest tape, Darth Sueder II, chopping lightly treated soul samples to set his seasick verses adrift on a lemon-lime sea. What he’s doing sonically isn’t boundary-breaking or avant-garde, but his ear for memorable loops that settle into the backdrop is impeccable. On “Lovable,” a meandering organ shuffles against hi-hats that eke out what should be an un-rappable rhythm; somehow, though, it’s the perfect vehicle for Suede to wax romantic about autumn leaves before launching into asides about gentrification and white people who are too quick to call the cops. Ideas are scattered throughout the brief tracks, but each one’s focused, bridged by some of my favorite punchlines in recent memory (“I was in that county fair/ Like that kid apparently.”) If you’re not scared off by references to esoteric Christianity and MK ULTRA, give Goth Marciano a spin — it’s a fresh take on minimalistic East Coast hip-hop, especially for someone often entrenched in the distorted cloud rap favored by his brethren in the Underground Dust Funk collective. –Jude Noel --- Big Twins - Grimey Life [STREAM] Although Big Twins f.k.a. Twin Gambino has experienced something of a second life thanks to today’s boom-bap revival, one need look no further than the guestlist on this tape to recognize his Infamous Mobb credentials. In addition to features from fellow Infamous rappers Godfather Pt. 3 and Ty Nitty, as well as Mobb affiliate Big Noyd, Grimey Life includes a posthumous appearance by Prodigy, which finds the late icon far from phoning it in, with lines such as “I handle bars like lifers or motocross bikers.” For those keeping track, Havoc also lends a verse (to Knxwledge-produced eulogy “Memories”), and The Alchemist produces the fittingly ghostly “Phantom of the Opera.” In spite of these bigger names and many other features, the project is first and foremost a product of Big Twins whose often imitated but never duplicated voice remains the unmistakable audio definition of grime — inflicted pain inflected. –Samuel Diamond --- Bbymutha - Muthaz Day 3 [STREAM] The cover art of Muthaz Day 3 is a photo of Bbymutha with her two sets of twins all dressed in red robes, surrounded by candles and sitting on what appears to be a pentagram. You’re in her domain now. Welcome to a world full of sinister instrumentals and trap beats that slither underneath the Chattanooga rapper’s spellbinding flow; a world where a single mom with two sets of twins doesn’t have to be bound by the traditional ideas of what a parent should or shouldn’t be; a world where confidence is the lifeblood of all things. On Muthaz Day 3, Bbymutha continues to champion her independence and forge ahead on a path that she’s laying brick by brick, all by herself. –Sam Tornow --- DaBoii - Neva Lookin Back [STREAM] We should be thankful that this was even made into a playlist. For a little over two years, the members of Bay Area juggernaut SOB X RBE have operated as an essentially YouTube-only outfit; while enjoyable, both recent albums (GANGIN and GANGIN II) scan more as fulfillments of label obligations than as faithful documents of the group’s most essential, often online-only work. As obsessives were left to parse the steady stream of loosies from individual members and all possible combinations thereof, there were few safer bets than a DaBoii solo track. DaBoii raps with purist appeal, his style a charismatic but unornamented amalgam of the Bay’s long history of singular rap figures. The videos, courtesy directors Tyler Casey and BGIGGZ, are often as entertaining as the songs themselves; Neva Lookin Back corrals three of DaBoii’s best from the past year (“Ridin’,” “Onna Gang,” and “Sum it Up”) alongside a further nine new tracks, offering an imperfect but better-than-nothing document of DaBoii’s 2018. Still, it’s probably best to rip your own copy of this while you still can. –Corrigan B --- Curren$y, Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist (Fetti?) - Fetti (Roma?) [STREAM] A tangential anecdote that bears repeating: in a recent interview, rapper Milo reminisced about driving around Chicago with rapper Serengeti, listening to Freddie Gibbs and Madlib’s Piñata, which Milo recalled inspired ‘Geti to say, “I don’t know if it gets better than this.” Word. Although pairing with the Mad Liberator might’ve made Gibbs your favorite rappers’ favorite rapper, heads have been waiting for a Gibbs-Curren$y-Alchemist album since the trio first came together on 2011’s “Scottie Pippen.” Thankfully, Fetti does not disappoint nor does it rest on the laurels that the three artists have received independently of each other in the seven years since. Which brings us to another point not yet fully addressed in this tape’s coverage to date: none of the three artists’ names appear on the cover, yet the word “Roma” does, leading one to believe that it might in fact be the title to this, the first release by a rap supergroup named Fetti. Fingers crossed, lighters up. –Samuel Diamond --- Warhol.ss - Chest Pains [STREAM] Has it really been two and a half years since Warhol.ss dropped “Speed Racer?” Although it feels like little time has passed since the Chicago emcee broke into the SoundCloud mainstream, the platform’s predominant ethos has experienced so much change it’s easy to forget the potential that brief track packed. Surfing Brentrambo’s undulant percussion, Warhol.ss stood out with a gruff cadence and unflinching confidence that offset the bubblegum aesthetic that overtook 2016. Despite a handful of collaborations with tastemakers Pi’erre Bourne and Cole Bennett, he’s yet to recreate his initial brilliance — an understandably difficult feat for someone so ahead of their time. On Chest Pains, we find Warhol.ss exploring the lanes that lead him back to prominence: he’s at his most accessible muttering plosive-tinged one-liners on the Kenny Beats-produced “Bird’s Nest,” but “War Ready” proves to be the tape’s most fascinating venture. Kick drums stumble over bars as Warhol lines the off-kilter rhythm with a nimble collage of triplet flows. It’s difficult to wrap your head around, but it’s hypnotic if you can. This new crop of cuts doesn’t include an obvious hit, but it does appear to be a step toward something greater. Trust the process. –Jude Noel --- Black Josh - Yung Sweg Lawd [STREAM] Is it acute homesickness or latent agoraphobia that causes some people to become physically ill every time they leave their old stomping grounds? Or maybe just plain, ordinary travelers sickness? My brother, who works in an airport, told me that a few months back a flight touched down with every passenger and crew member sick, like vomiting sick… quarantine sick. Yung Sweg Lawd is that sick, bro. It’s dark. Absent a better frame of reference (my fault), it’s Wu-Tang on Tim Westwood in the 90s, blacked out, using the words “dark” and “horrible” as slang praise, having likely just learned it. Pharma-grade smoke clouds billowing like factory stacks, it’s the acid rain; Black Josh a climate-change centaur moving (in) packs. –Samuel Diamond --- The-Dream - Ménage à Trois: Sextape Vol. 1, 2, 3 [STREAM] Weird times that we’re living in when an artist can release a three-volume, 42-song mixtape and it’s not anticipated or received as their magnum opus. In fact, I don’t even think that R&B heavyweight The-Dream announced Ménage à Trois beforehand beyond hinting that he was working on something. Thus Ménage à Trois, thematically billed as a three-part “sex tape,” with album art to match, lands as another long project from another major artist (which is the standard in The Age of Streaming), but it’s one worth sifting through if you like R&B even just a little bit. Singers-turned-rappers and/or rappers-turned-singers are a dime a dozen nowadays (i.e., that Drizzy-/Ty Dolla-esque hybrid style, which, make no mistake, I do enjoy), which is to say: for all the suave-crooning purists like myself, R&B proper has seen better days on the charts. Luckily, The-Dream gives us 2.5 hours of sultry singing (mostly) sans rap harmonies here while still delivering much stylistic variety. Think The Weeknd’s Trilogy except every song is about sex, with a modus operandi that overall seems to be downtempo and lush. Dig through this behemoth until you find something to cuddle up with — there’s bound to be stuff you’ll have on repeat. –Alex Brown --- Boosie Badazz - Boosie Blues Cafe [STREAM] From the Thanksgiving release date (announced two days prior) to its very concept, the actual existence of Boosie Blues Cafe was far from certain until the moment we had it in our hands. Not that expectations were tempered to match, of course. While not “bluesy,” per se, the cathartic baring of the soul has always factored heavily into Boosie’s work; he’s the man with a song for everything, a Baton Rouge legend off his ability to speak directly to the city’s youth. The prospect of him stepping fully into the region’s other musical tradition, then, was immensely appealing, if less out of optimism than sheer curiosity. It works OK — with the exception of absolute slapper “I Know How to Have a Good Time,” most of the tracks are identifiably Boosiean to a fault; Boosie’s got such a long history of rapping this stuff in a compelling way that translating it to a blues idiom can feel a bit rote. A worthwhile experiment, however; Boosie’s passion projects are by default a thousand times more interesting than someone else’s re-hashing of the very crowded Rap Caviar lane. –Corrigan B --- Sir E.U - Merry christmas my nigga! / Thc / To This Day / Cries for help [MCMN · THC · TTD · CFH] Earlier this year, I was talking to an artist who shall remain nameless about the inclusion in this column of a tape by another artist who shall remain nameless. The artist I was kibitzing with took issue with the included work, saying something to the effect of “If you throw enough shit at the wall, eventually some will stick, but that doesn’t mean it’s any good,” which is more than fair. To be honest, my understanding of noise sets and DJing in general isn’t nearly adroit enough to tell if Sir E.U’s massive output over the last two weeks is an example of the aforementioned criticism or of a mix master purposely and methodically laying waste to two-turntable fundamentals.
