Check out my latest blogpost on our magical trip to Quebec City! Please explore this incredible area of Canada, if you haven't already!
Bonsoir! I had no idea how much I would LOVE Quebec City. The architecture, the old city streets, the Nordic spas, the friendly people and the food, my goodness, the food. Ian and I wanted to book a romantic trip for just the two of us and decided on a domestic, quick flight vacation because of the additional stress surrounding everything pandemic-related with travelling, and the risk of getting…

Don’t get me wrong – – The publisher of Sam’s Place: Stories, Mike Aloisi of AM Ink Publishing, has treated me great. His people have designed great covers, set up professional layouts, paid promptly, and before Sam’s Place: Stories launched, he called me to talk over strategy for marketing, to answer any questions I might have, and to generally get to know one another. "It's been quite a ride," McCain wrote in his memoir.
Republican Sen. John McCain, 81, has died after a long battle with brain cancer.
The Arizona senator was diagnosed with an aggressive form of glioblastoma and began treatment for the disease in July 2017.
McCain appeared to be undeterred for several months after his diagnosis was made public.
He was seen back at work on Capitol Hill last fall and weighed in on major legislative policies, including the annual defense authorization bill and efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
"I don't mean to be repetitious, but to my Democrat friends and some of my Republican friends: I'm coming back," McCain said during a Facebook Live event in August last year.
McCain made headlines upon his return — including when he dramatically voted no on the Republican version of a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
His career as a public servant spanned decades of honorable service, and despite some challenges along the way, McCain established himself as a key figurehead of the Republican Party. Few lawmakers on Capitol Hill will match the legacy he leaves behind.
Here's a look back at John McCain's incredible life:
McCain graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1958 and served as a pilot.
Early in his career in naval aviation, McCain's flying ability and judgment were questioned after he crashed three planes. His commanders were said to have sarcastically called him "Ace McCain" because of his record.
"John was what you called a push-the-envelope guy," Sam Hawkins, who flew in McCain's squadron in the 1960s, told the Los Angeles Times. "There are some naval aviators who are on the cautious side. They don't get out on the edges, but the edges are where you get the maximum out of yourself and out of your plane. That's where John operated."
On October 26, 1967, during the Vietnam War, McCain was flying over Hanoi when a surface-to-air missile hit his plane's wing, forcing him to eject.
"Some North Vietnamese swam out and pulled me to the side of the lake and immediately started stripping me, which is their standard procedure," McCain wrote in USA Today.
"Of course, this being in the center of town, a huge crowd of people gathered, and they were all hollering and screaming and cursing and spitting and kicking at me."
McCain broke both of his arms and his right knee. He had lost consciousness until he hit the water after ejecting from the plane.
McCain was held as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) for five and a half years. He was subjected to torture and solitary confinement in a Vietnamese prison nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton."
Upon learning that McCain's father was an admiral in the Navy, who would eventually command all US forces in the Pacific, NVA forces provided medical care to McCain. Doctors performed surgery on his leg, according to McCain, but made incorrect incisions on one side and cut all the ligaments.
McCain would spend the rest of his life walking with a noticeable limp.
McCain was released on March 14, 1973.
The North Vietnamese Army had previously offered McCain his freedom, but he refused, thinking that it would bring shame and demoralize his fellow POWs.
Carol, McCain's first wife, raised three children while he was gone, and was reportedly recovering from a devastating car crash that left her impaired for months.
McCain made several trips back to Vietnam to bridge relations with the US.
McCain would eventually retire from the Navy in 1981 as a captain. His awards include a Silver Star and a Distinguished Flying Cross.
"I have watched men suffer the anguish of imprisonment, defy appalling human cruelty ... break for a moment, then recover inhuman strength to defy their enemies once more," McCain said to the Naval Academy's graduating class in 1993. "All these things and more, I have seen. And so will you. My time is slipping by. Yours is fast approaching. You will know where your duty lies. You will know."

After serving as a Navy liaison in the Senate, McCain took the leap into politics and was elected to serve Arizona's 1st Congressional District from 1982 to 1984.
McCain's political opponents criticized him early on, pointing to what they called his lack of connection to Arizona. He eventually hit back during a debate:
"Listen, pal. I spent 22 years in the Navy. My grandfather was in the Navy. We in the military service tend to move a lot. We have to live in all parts of the country, all parts of the world. I wish I could have had the luxury, like you, of growing up and living and spending my entire life in a nice place like the first district of Arizona, but I was doing other things. As a matter of fact, when I think about it now, the place I lived longest in my life was Hanoi."
"Looking back, I think the race was effectively over right then," McCain recalled in his autobiography. "But I didn't know that then. I was just mad and had taken a swing."

After his two terms in the House, McCain sought Arizona's Senate seat and won a landslide victory in 1986.
As a senator, McCain was a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He would eventually become the chairman of the committee, weighing in on a variety of matters involving the US military, such as funding and mission scope.

Sen. McCain hit a bump in the road in 1989.
McCain was one of the "Keating Five" — five senators accused of trying to persuade federal regulators to ease up on Charles Keating, a major campaign donor who became financially compromised during the 1980s savings-and-loan crisis.
McCain, who emerged relatively unscathed after the Senate Ethics Committee's investigation, was found to have exercised "poor judgment." While the other four senators retired in the 1990s, McCain soldiered on.
"Despite my recovery, the Keating Five experience was not one that I have walked away from as easily as I have other bad times," McCain said in his memoir.
"Twelve years after its conclusion, I still wince thinking about it and find that if I do not repress the memory, its recollection still provokes a vague but real feeling that I had lost something very important, something that was sacrificed in the pursuit of gratifying ambitions, my own and others."
Following the scandal, McCain soon earned the moniker of "Maverick," a term his colleagues from both sides of the political aisle gave him as he advocated for campaign finance reform and sought to end government waste.
In the 1990s, McCain took on special-interest groups like the tobacco industry, and pushed for raising cigarette taxes to pay for anti-smoking campaigns. But McCain's anti-tobacco bill ultimately fell short after the tobacco industry launched a $40 million PR effort of its own.
"The losers are the children of America," McCain said.
Regardless of the outcome for some of his ambitious reforms, McCain's was easily reelected in 1992 and 1998.

McCain would soon became a household name in politics. He set his sights higher and announced in 1999 that he would run for president in the 2000 election.
After losing several states in the primaries to then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush, McCain withdrew from the race and endorsed Bush.
One of McCain's crowning achievements in the Senate was the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002.
McCain, along with Democratic Sen. Russell Feingold of Winsonsin, helped enact the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, one of the first major amendments to the Federal Election Campaign Act.
The legislation was designed to regulate financing for political organizations and curb the influx of soft money.
Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, McCain supported the US-led coalition war in Afghanistan.
McCain explained his support for Operation Enduring Freedom in a Wall Street Journal opinion column published in October 2001.
"There is no avoiding the war we are in today, any more than we could have avoided world war after our fleet was bombed at Pearl Harbor," McCain wrote. "America is under attack by a depraved, malevolent force that opposes our every interest and hates every value we hold dear."
"War is a miserable business. Let's get on with it."
McCain also supported the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and claimed Saddam Hussein was "turning Iraq into a weapons assembly line for al-Qaida's network."
Although McCain continued to voice his support for US military options in Iraq, McCain later admitted it was a mistake.
"The principal reason for invading Iraq, that Saddam had [weapons of mass destruction], was wrong," McCain wrote in his memoir.
"The war, with its cost in lives and treasure and security, can't be judged as anything other than a mistake, a very serious one, and I have to accept my share of the blame for it."

McCain announced his second presidential bid for the 2008 election.
McCain gracefully spars with then-Sen. Barack Obama.
McCain secured the Republican nomination in the primaries and faced off against then-Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in the general election.
As McCain trailed behind polls, Obama's critics sought to discredit him by promoting false theories about his heritage and religion. During a campaign rally in 2008, one of McCain's supporters explained why she said she did not trust Obama.
"I have read about him, and he's not, he's not — he's an Arab," the woman said, incorrectly.
McCain quickly grabbed the microphone, shook his head and set the record straight.
"No ma'am," McCain said, calling Obama "a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that's what this campaign is all about."
McCain selects Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate.
McCain later said he regretted the decision and wished he selected Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic senator from Connecticut, and his longtime friend, as his running mate.
"It was sound advice that I could reason for myself," McCain said in his memoir. "But my gut told me to ignore it and I wish I had."
McCain concedes to Obama in November 2008: "This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight."
On November 5, 2008, McCain formally conceded the election and congratulated President-elect Obama on his victory.
"A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him," McCain said. "To congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love."
"This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight," McCain added.
"I've always believed that America offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to seize it. Senator Obama believes that, too."
As the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, McCain provided legislative oversight of the military and became a leading voice on veterans issues.
But as the chairman of the legislative body of military affairs, McCain also had to account for the military's failures.
For the most part, McCain maintained friendly ties with other lawmakers, regardless of their political party.
In July 2017, McCain announced he was diagnosed with brain cancer.
McCain received broad support for his recovery from both sides of the political aisle.
"I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support - unfortunately for my sparring partners in Congress, I'll be back soon, so stand-by!" McCain said on Twitter.
McCain feuded with President Donald Trump.
Prior to making a move to politics, real-estate tycoon Donald Trump threw jabs at McCain by throwing cold water on his military service.
Trump said the former naval aviator "was captured," and expressed doubt on whether he should be hailed as a hero.
"He's not a war hero," Trump said at a leadership summit in 2015. "He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."
"I think John McCain's done very little for the veterans," Trump later said. "I'm very disappointed in John McCain."
Trump would continue to echo the remarks throughout his presidency.
McCain remained critical of Trump's presidency and did not shy from letting his feelings known. On Trump's controversial performance at his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July, McCain described it as "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory."
McCain also denounced Trump's repeated attacks on the press: "Trump continues his unrelenting attacks on the integrity of American journalists and news outlets," McCain wrote in an op-ed. "This has provided cover for repressive regimes to follow suit."
The decisive healthcare vote.
A few weeks after being diagnosed with brain cancer, McCain returned to the Senate floor and cast his stunning "no" vote and scuttled Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's healthcare bill on a 51-49 vote.
"Watch the show," McCain said to reporters as he walked into the chamber before the vote.
The Republican-led "skinny repeal" would have repealed major portions of President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law, and McCain's vote was crucial in derailing that effort.
McCain's vote has been a source of ire from Trump, who frequently disparages McCain's decision in his numerous campaign rallies.
McCain also had a gruff, but affectionate relationship with journalists.
McCain discontinues his brain cancer treatment.
On August 24, McCain announced he would discontinue his cancer treatment.
"In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival," McCain's family said in a statement. "But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment."
In a passage from his memoir, which was published in May, McCain writes:
"I don't know how much longer I'll be here. Maybe I'll have another five years. Maybe, with the advances in oncology, they'll find new treatments for my cancer that will extend my life. Maybe I'll be gone before you read this. My predicament is, well, rather unpredictable."
"I have some things I'd like to take care of first, some work that needs finishing, and some people I need to see. And I want to talk to my fellow Americans a little more if I may."
"It's been quite a ride."
"It's been quite a ride," McCain continued in his memoir. "I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times."

Wegmans and Publix are America's Favorite Grocery Stores: Survey
Publix and Wegmans are America’s favorite grocery retailers, tying for first place in a consumer study of more than 12,700 shoppers conducted by Market Force Information (Market Force). Trader Joe’s is a very close second and H-E-B ranks third. This is the second consecutive year that Wegmans has held the top spot in the annual study, after unseating long-running favorite Trader Joe’s in 2016.
Publix, which ranked second for the past four years, earned a first-place tie with Wegmans, with each scoring 77 percent on Market Force’s Customer Loyalty Index. Trader Joe’s narrowly missed the lead spot with 76 percent, and H-E-B made the top three for the first time with 69 percent - a 10 percent increase from 2016. ALDI and Harris Teeter rounded out the top five with 68 percent and 66 percent, respectively.
Publix Super Markets is the largest employee-owned grocery chain in the country and has been named to Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For every year since the list’s inception. The chain’s engaged and friendly associates help deliver on its “Where shopping is a pleasure” motto.
Wegmans, founded in 1916, is known for its fresh produce, reasonable prices and massive stores. The New York-based chain is expanding steadily and, with a focus on employee training to ensure customers have a great experience, creating superfans eager for a new location to open near their home.
What sets one grocer apart from the others in shoppers’ minds? For one, being able to find the items they want, a category where Publix was a clear leader. Publix was also found to have the cleanest stores and fastest checkout speeds. Wegmans ranked highest for its specialty department service, and a close second for item availability. Trader Joe’s was found to have the most courteous cashiers. ALDI once again led for value, followed by WinCo Foods and Costco. Harris Teeter, Hy-Vee, ALDI and H-E-B all fared well in the rankings, while Walmart landed at the bottom in all categories but one.
Consumer preference for local and organic choices at the grocery store are holding steady, with 58 percent of shoppers indicating that locally sourced meat, produce and dairy products are important. Half said they prefer organic when given a choice, and 93 percent had purchased organic produce in the past 30 days, making it the most popular organic item, followed by meat, dairy and packaged dry goods. Baby products and paper products were the least bought organic offerings.
Increasingly, shoppers are filling up their shopping carts online rather than in the store. Market Force found services such as click-and-collect (buy online and pick up at store) and online ordering with home delivery are being embraced across all age groups, particularly millennials.
The use of click-and-collect has more than doubled since 2016, with 9 percent saying they’ve tried it, compared to 4 percent in 2016. Of those, 78 percent were satisfied or very satisfied with the experience. Most click-and-collect shoppers use the service at Walmart, followed by Kroger, Sam’s Club and Harris Teeter. Twenty-six percent are frequent users, taking advantage of click-and-collect at least monthly.
Home delivery services are also growing in popularity – 18 percent said they’ve used grocery home delivery, compared to 15% in 2016. Most are using the service through general online retailers such as Amazon and Jet. However, one-fifth were less than satisfied with the experience, leaving ample room for improvement.
Despite the rise of grocery tech, people still love their printed circulars and are using them more than ever. In fact, 82 percent use them at least weekly, a significant jump from 2016 when just 48 percent reported weekly use. What’s more, nearly one-quarter shop at a specific grocer because of their circular promotions.
For the rankings, Market Force asked participants to rate their satisfaction with their most recent grocery shopping experience and their likelihood to refer that grocer to others. The results were averaged to rank each brand based on a Composite Loyalty Index score.
The survey was conducted online in March 2017. The pool of 12,774 respondents represented a cross-section of the four U.S. census regions, and reflected a broad spectrum of income levels, with 51 percent reporting household incomes of more than $50,000 a year. Respondents’ ages ranged from 18 to over 65. Approximately 75 percent were women and 24 percent were men.

Politics: The incredible life of John McCain in 31 photos

Some areas of the prison where McCain was held were converted into a museum, dedicated to the historic link between his service and the Vietnam War.

During a visit to the infamous prison, McCain said he could not forgive the jailers who mistreated and killed fellow POWs.

Source: AZ Central
Source: USA Today

Terry Tha Rapman officially released his debut studio album, 'Tha Rapman Beginz' in 2007, and we revisit the project 11 years after.
This week in 2007, Terry Tha Rapman released his official debut album, 'Tha Rapman Beginz', kicking off a journey that has seen him remain one of the few active members of not just his clique, SWAT ROOT, but also the now defunct label, under which the album was put out.
Released under veteran's filmmaker, Charles Novia's imprint, November Records, which had Majek Fashek on its stable at some point, 'Tha Rapman Beginz' is not exactly Terry's first body of work, as he had previously released, 'Tha Rapmanifestation' in 2001 during his time with Payback Tyme Records, but he says the project was not properly released or distributed, so it wasn't considered as an official body of work.
'Tha Rapman Beginz' album offers up-to 17 tracks of rap awesomeness as Terry who had just signed his first major record deal at the time, was eager to make an impression on the mainstream and at the same time, cater to his core hip-hop followers.
ALSO READ: 10 Essential songs by Modenine
Featuring a number of artists like Aysia, A.T, Modenine, J.Vox, Sam P, Babyrella who is now known as Munachii Abii and Overdose, the album served up a mix of talent, lyrics, flow and something pleasantly inspiring to the genre at the time of its release.
In an exclusive interview with Pulse, Terry Madaki revisits the project, producers and artistes he worked with, the major singles and where it ranks among his body of works 11 years after.
On the major singles off ''Tha Rapman Beginz''
''The first single off the album, ''Na Beanz'' was produced by Mista Seth, I was basically tired of the media painting hip-hop as music for school dropouts and street people.
So I was explaining how hip-hop is intelligent music, you gotta be intelligent to be a dope rapper, since the slogan, ''No be beans/na beans?'' was trending in the streets back then, I decided to use it for a catchy hook.''
Another song that caught some buzz following the release of its video was ''Shake Ya Shangbash'' and Terry says;
''Shake ya Shangbash'', is dedicated to some girls I knew in UniAbuja that year, ''Shangbash'' was a popular slang for booty so I decided to make a club song about it.
The original track was produced by Mista Baron, but the remix was produced by Jamix.''
On ''Small Boy'', a jovial track where he featured close friend, Modenine, Terry states, ''That was the most unserious track of them all, Modenine had a skit called Small boy earlier, so we just made it a full track for the album, we actually recorded and teased a sequel that we never released''.
''Only 4 Naija'' was just me addressing the ills of our society with witty humorous lines, I worked on it with hip-hop legendary producer, G Lynx and it featured Maytronomy and Ayuba Tete.''
If there is one song on the album that many Nigerian hip-hop heads still point to as perhaps the greatest rap collaboration, it is Spazmodic, a song where Terry Tha Rapman alongside his darker alter ego, Joe Spazm came together with Modenine in a pure lyrical fest.
Terry looks back on the song with joyful nostalgia, ''Mehn, there is so many memories attached to that album, ''Spazmodic was just that record that was meant to happen.
Modenine and I went over to Jonah da Monarch's studio, which was in a police barracks then in Ikeja, Lagos. Mode selected one of his beats and we recorded same day, Pherowshuz was also present in the studio.''
''There was a song which later became a favourite, ''PH Girl'', produced by Fairface, my first gig in Port Harcourt, I was introduced by a friend to Munachi Abii (who was known then as Babyrella), I was so impressed by her delivery that I decided to put her on my album.''
ALSO READ: Terry Tha Rapman is Terry Pablo in new single
On the inspiration behind the album title
''The album title came at me after watching a movie about my favourite superhero character, Batman titled, Batman Begins,'' he says.
Placing the album on a scale with his other projects, he responds, ''It is a favourite amongst my core fans since it was more or less my introduction to the mainstream, I hope to capture the same vibe on my forthcoming album.''
Speaking in an earlier interview years ago, Terry identified the project's track 12, 'The Revelation' as his best song on the album, ''It is the first song I recorded for the album, I had just left PayBackTyme Records and I was broke, mad and all, it was a personal song.''
The album earned nominations for Best Rap Album at the 2007 Hip Hop World Awards and Nigerian Music Awards.
11 years later, his messages remain alive as songs like ''Only 4 Naija'' fits in perfectly into present day societal occurrences, while ''Spazmodic'' literally packs more punch than most rap albums available on the shelf.
That said, The Rapman Beginz faced criticisms with some songs pointed out as being average and lazy, while some of his day one fans struggled to accept his commercial songs, the album however works its way as a pioneering body of work that delivered epic moments cementing Tha Rapman's place as one of the most revered emcees on the scene.

Strategy: 15 insider facts about working at Walt Disney World only cast members know
Walt Disney World cast members learn a few things you might not know about working in "the most magical place on Earth." Here's a look at some park secrets that you may not have heard about before.
• Walt Disney World employees are all referred to as "cast members."
• This includes everyone from the costumed character performers to the ride operators to the people working in retail.
• The park also reflects a show business-like environment by requiring cast members to stay "in character" while in the presence of guests.
Walt Disney World has a rep for being the "most magical place on Earth."
But what's it really like to be one of the people responsible for making the magic happen?
Walt Disney World employs 70,000 "cast members" — the term the company uses to refer to all employees. They all help to run a world-famous park that attracted a record 68 million visitors to Orlando in 2016, according to The Orlando Sentinel.
It's fair to say that these thousands of cast members come to learn a number of secrets about the park that the rest of us tourists might miss.
Business Insider spoke with a number of former Walt Disney World cast members, as well as authors who've written extensively about the park.
Here's what they had to say about the secrets of working at Walt Disney World:
You learn quickly that it's all about the guests
The guest experience is everything at Disney. That's drilled into you from day one.
Former Disney College Cast program attendee and "Devin Earns Her Ears: My Secret Walt Disney World Cast Member Diary" author Devin Melendy told Business Insider that, even though her job consisted of working in retail in Frontierland, she was encouraged not to stand behind the register whenever possible.
Instead, cast members are directed to spread some magic by passing out stickers, fast passes, birthday pins, and free bags and shirts.
Mike Fox, author of "The Hidden Secrets & Stories of Walt Disney World," "Disneyland Details: The Magical Hidden Secrets & Story Elements of Disneyland," and "Disneyland In-Depth" and founder of the site Disney-Secrets.com, told Business Insider that a "deep commitment to the guest experience" is "instilled within the company.
"So it always impresses me, especially at the cast member level, the training that goes into helping these folks to provide that superior experience and to see it out on stage and see it executed," he said.
Name tags are an absolute must — even if you're using an alias
Melendy said it's considered "bad show" for a cast members to not wear a name tag. But if you lose your tag, no worries. There's a whole stockpile of gender neutral names like Chris, Sam, and Pat to choose from.
"I lost my first name tag, so I was Chris from New York for two weeks while I waited for my new one," Melendy told Business Insider.
"It's a major deal if you don't have one," Chantelle Judd, a former cast member who worked in Frontierland, told Business Insider. "If this happens — it's easy to forget sometimes — you have to make sure you can borrow one — costuming has spares."
If you want to play a Disney character, you'd better be good at charades
Melendy said she auditioned to become a costumed character but ultimately didn't make the cut. She said that these performers must go through loads of auditions and costume fittings in order to land the role.
People who are good at improvising have a leg up. During the process, you're asked to pantomime activities, like making a sandwich and washing a dog.
"You were supposed to make these gestures big and dramatic, because if you're in a costume you have to parlay what you're saying without saying anything," she said.
You've got to be careful about how you point
In some cultures, pointing your finger is considered quite rude.
"They do tell you that, if you're giving directions, to point with two fingers or your whole hand extended out as if you're gonna shake someone's hand," Melendy said.
If the guests can see you, you're technically 'onstage'
The terms "onstage" and "backstage" don't just apply to performers at Walt Disney World.
"Even just being in the stores, they called that onstage," Melendy said. "If you're in the computer room or back office, that's backstage."
And all cast members, from the person dressed as Mickey Mouse to the person working the register at one of the park's gift shops, must stay "in character" onstage.
"That would mean that your costume is correct, your name tag is on, and your pin lanyard is on — we would trade pins with guests," she said. "They very much stressed that this is an experience. It's not your experience, it's the guest's experience. You have to provide the best show that you can. It's stepping into a role."
Fox said that, for cast members, talking about your personal life and arguing is not an option. Anything that will "break the spell" of the Disney experience, so to speak, is out.
"When you're talking to Cinderella, and say, 'Hey, let me take a picture of you on my iPhone,' and she says, 'What is an iPhone?' — she's playing a role and her job is to maintain that role, to maintain that entertainment, maintain that story," Fox said.
He said that passageways to Disney's "backstage" are often marked with a broad yellow line.
"What those lines mean is that, if you were a cast member, anytime you step past that line, you are visible to the guests and you must be onstage," he said.
You get to see the park totally deserted on a regular basis
Cast members don't just pack up and head out for the day when all the guests depart. Melendy said her shift would typically end an hour or two after the park closed.
That meant getting a glimpse of a deserted Walt Disney World.
"It's kind of spooky because you're just so used to seeing it full," Melendy said. "Most of the time they keep the music on, so it's not completely creepy."
You can't just run around the park
Cast members can't just take a walk around the park when they're working.
This policy may have stemmed from something Walt Disney himself saw in Disneyland. Reportedly, the founder noticed a Frontierland cowboy taking a stroll through Tomorrowland.
"For Walt, it was all about the story," Fox said. "To see a cowboy from Frontierland in Tomorrowland, it just ruins the story."
As a result, cast members use hidden tunnels beneath the park to get around
While some reports indicate that there's a whole underground, cast-members-only tangle of passageways beneath Walt Disney World, the reality is a little less mysterious.
The underground "utilidors" serve to allow cast members to move about the Magic Kingdom and Epcot unseen. According to Fox, Disneyland also features a smaller system of utilidors. The ones constructed in Walt Disney World were built at ground level, to avoid the area's high water table. The whole park is actually built around 14 feet above ground level.
"The utiladors provide utility," Fox said. "They're an excellent business tools. It's nothing that Disney's trying to hide from people, it's just a very efficient tool for maintaining the story."
Fox said that cast members sometimes cycle or take small carts to navigate the underground passages, which also include large pipes through which trash is moved.
Melendy said that cast members can break from character once they're in the utilidors and out of sight.
"You see different character performers with their wigs off, but their costumes on," she said. "You see a mix of all the people from around the park."
She didn't spend much time in the passageways, however, as she worked in Frontierland and it proved to be a bit of a walk.
Cast members also get access to hidden cafeterias, changing rooms, and even a salon
Along with the tunnels, cast members have access to underground cafeterias, dressing rooms, and even a salon called Kingdom Kutters.
"Some cast members also have access to a trailer or a room in a building in the backstage area," Susan Veness, author of "The Hidden Magic of Walt Disney World" series, told Business Insider.
She and her husband Simon once got a firsthand glimpse of a trailer when they visited a former performer at Epcot's American Music Machine attraction for an interview.
"It was fairly basic, with tables and chairs they could use during meals, and a little sitting area, plus a few small rooms, including a room with mirrors where they could do their makeup and hair," she said.
There are a number of other hidden spots around the park
Even beyond the hidden tunnels, there's more to Disney World than meets the eye. According to Veness, VIP lounges dot the park — especially in Epcot.
"Some of them are open to guests who work at the company that sponsors the attraction they're attached to, some of them are open to Make-A-Wish kids and their families, some welcome certain card holders, such as the Disney Visa card, and some of them are used for media events or private functions," she said.
Veness and her husband have visited several of the lounges, including one in the old Wonders of Life attraction. She said that Spaceship Earth, Test Track, Mission: Space, and the American Adventure all have hidden lounges, although some may have closed. There's even a private safari camp in Disney's Animal Kingdom.
According to Veness, taking a behind-the-scenes tour is a good option for anyone who's dying to get a backstage look at the park.
If you get a gig at Disney World, you'll start noticing things that others don't
When it comes to all things Disney, cast members often become experts over the years. That means knowing all about some of the park's subtle Easter eggs.
"Many of them, especially the long-time cast members, have an encyclopedic knowledge of their attraction's details," Veness said. "Many cast members know at least one or two hidden details, but some go above and beyond."
"When you look at the parks, look at the little details, those make a huge difference, too," Fox said.
Veness said she's even met Disney cast members at the American Adventure in Epcot who spent years researching the details of the attraction.
So if you end up striking up a conversation with a cast member, make sure to ask about any cool hidden details in the park.
It's not all fun and games at the most magical place on earth
One former cast member who operated rides like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and The Mad Tea Party said that the role wasn't all fun and games.
"A lot of people thought I played all day and didn't actually do anything, but I can tell you that's definitely not the case," the cast member told Business Insider. "While it's great to have fun while working, there was certainly a lot of hard work involved."
"Working at Disney isn't magical all the time," Meghan O'Neill, a former Disney cast member who worked in Future World in Epcot, told Business Insider. "You work long hours in all types of weather dealing with guests who have high expectations."
The parks take clean-up seriously
"There are bins meticulously placed all around the parks to limit the amount of rubbish people leave behind," Judd said.
She said that in addition to this tactic, the custodial team works so diligently that it's hard to find any discarded garbage around the massive park.
Cast members often work long shifts
Operating hours at Walt Disney World "vary by season and from park to park," according to the resort's website.
Regardless, cast members regularly put in a ton of hours every workday.
"A lot of people who I talk to can't believe you could start as early as 4:00 a.m. and finish as late as 3:00 a.m.," Judd said.
Cast members don't get bombarded with free fast passes when they're off the clock
O'Neill added that it was a misconception that cast members get perks like unlimited fast passes when they're off the clock.
"When we are not working, we're just regular guests," she said.
