Bears Sweep To Finish 5-1 At CRC 7s

Cal Completes Year With Three Wins, Finish Season 22-1

PHILADELPHIA — California beat Clemson, 50-0, to complete a three-match sweep at the Collegiate Rugby 7s Championship, capping the Golden Bears' 5-1 June at the CRC with a win over the Tigers after a 38-0 shutout of Virginia Tech and 34-5 win over Wisconsin earlier at Talen Energy Stadium. Forced to regroup in a bizarre tournament structure that almost assured that either Cal or Life would be left out of the cup bracket after pool play, the Bears played solid 7s rugby to seal their victory. "As I said after Saturday, we played pretty well again today," said head coach Jack Clark. "Now, us scoring 120-5 in plate matches is mostly a disservice to the teams with legitimate aspirations toward the plate. We accept our end of the proposition, but it doesn't feel right for others." The Rugby Bears exited the event relieved for the status of freshman Jason Severance, who was released from a local hospital after being transported for observation following an injury in the first half, and is now with his teammates and parents. The Golden Bears, winners of three of four competitions they entered, including the PAC 7s conference championship, complete their 2018-19 year in Olympic 7 with an overall record of 22-1. Nine of the 13 student-athletes who competed at the 2019 CRC return for the 2019-20 year, which awaits the program just around the corner as the United States prepares to compete in Rugby 7s at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I am proud of how the boys were able to focus on the next most important thing and finish strong," said graduated senior captain Nic Mirhashem. "Very excited for the boys returning in the fall. They're a very talented and hardworking bunch."

“Babe! Stop filming me and help.” Harry laughs a wide smile on his face. Your heart skips a beat at it, his smile is so beautiful.

“It’s so funny! I don’t know what I’m suppose to do.” You reply to him still recording. He stands between the entry’s gate and the guard cage holding a cooler, the way his arms are strained and flex under the weight is another reason for your heart to skip a beat.

“Could my boyfriend be any more adorable!” You speak for the video. He pouts at the camera and laughs again. The intercom speaks that the gate is open but when Harry tries to walk through it won’t budge.

“Oh no you’re stuck forever!” You mock cry and hold a hand up to the cage. “I’ll wait for you.” You add. The boy before you finds himself in hysterics at your comment. He leans over in laughter struggling to keep hold of the cooler as his strength leaves him. The change in position moves the gate open the with the lack of support now Harry comes fumbling out directly toward you. With a scream and shout the cooler lands popping open ice and drinks explode out while Harry lands on top of you with a thud.

“Oh love I’m so sorry. Are you okay?” He questions quickly pushing himself up off of your figure. Instead of responding it’s your turn to be in hysterics.

“I got that on video!” You manage to say between laughs as you sit up. Your phone lays off to the side away from the chaos. Thankfully it flew in the opposite direction of the cooler and you and Harry’s body landing. It may have not caught the actions but definitely the audio.

Harry shakes his head as she laughs and stand up. Harrison mirrors his motions as he stands behind the scene watching everything.

“Come on silly goose.” He directs as he grabs the cooler re loading it the drinks that weren’t destroyed and heading back to set.

Analyse De Graafschap 17/18 (deel 1)

Qua uitkomst was het een fantastisch seizoen voor De Graafschap, dit afgelopen speeljaar. Na het winnen van de play-offs is de club volgend jaar weer in de Eredivisie te bewonderen. Toch was niet altijd iedereen even tevreden over de speelwijze.

In deze driedelige analyse kijk ik terug op het seizoen en de dingen die me opvallen en probeer ik deze zaken helder uit te leggen door middel van een analyse. We beginnen bij het begin: het experiment met de 5-3-2 opstelling in de eerste wedstrijden van het seizoen.

Een mislukt 5-3-2-experiment De eerste zeven wedstrijden speelt De Graafschap in een 5-3-2-opstelling. De resultaten daarvan zijn middelmatig (W2-G4-V1). Het spel schuttert op dat moment echter – met name verdedigend – aan alle kanten. Qua aanvallende impulsen is het vooral hopen op een individuele ingeving van de aanvallers. Daarnaast lukte het trainer Henk de Jong maar niet om de al aanwezige spelers en de nieuwkomers samen tot de perfecte opstelling te smeden.

Jong PSV-De Graafschap: de 1-1 Uit een individuele actie (vrije trap Mark Diemers op de lat, waarna Serrarens van dichtbij binnenkopt) komt de ploeg van Henk de Jong op een 0-1 voorsprong. 

De 1-1 van Jong PSV legt goed bloot waar het misgaat bij De Graafschap in de 5-3-2 opstelling. Dat is met name de dekking. 5-3-2 leent zich uitstekend voor een zonedekking, maar slechts de helft van de verdediging houdt zich aan die opdracht bij onderstaande goal.

Jong PSV-rechtsback Van Vlerken (groene cirkel) is in balbezit en speelt de naar de buitenkant gekomen spits Sam Lammers (zwarte cirkel) aan. Lars Nieuwpoort (rode cirkel) loopt met Lammers mee die in balbezit komt en dekt daarmee de zone richting het centrum af. In plaats van met Van Vlerken mee te lopen, besluit Driver óók druk te zetten op Lammers. Gevolg is dat Van Vlerken achter de verdediging langsloopt en Lars Nieuwpoort met zich meetrekt, die het verdedigen van Lammers overlaat aan Driver. Daardoor ontstaat de volgende situatie.

Terwijl De Graafschap opnieuw goed gaat staan, laat Driver (in dit beeld de zwarte cirkel) Lammers ongestoord de steekpass geven op Van Vlerken, die gebruikt maakt van het gebrek aan communicatie bij de gebroeders Nieuwpoort (Sven groene cirkel en Lars gele cirkel). Lars moet in deze situatie de rugdekking geven aan Receveur (rode cirkel) die Rommens dekt en aan Driver die zijn handen vol heeft aan Lammers. Het automatische gevolg daarvan is dat Sven de dekking van Van Vlerken (meest linker aanvaller) moet overnemen. Onwennig als de spelers nog zijn in het nieuwe systeem lukt dit niet en kan Van Vlerken ongehinderd doorlopen en scoren. Het toont ook dat Driver van oorsprong geen verdediger is die weet dat een pass als deze er altijd uit gehaald moet worden.

De Graafschap-FC Emmen: zelfde fouten bij de goals Dezelfde fouten doen zich voor in de wedstrijd tegen FC Emmen. Het sleutelduel waarna Henk de Jong afstapt van zijn 5-3-2-principe. Bij de 1-0 countert Emmen snel en moet Andrew Driver verdedigen ten opzicht van de helemaal vrijstaande Alexander Bannink. Met een doodeenvoudige kap gaat de oud-speler van De Graafschap aan Driver voorbij en scoort 0-1.

Bij de 0-2 gaat De Graafschap-aanvoerder Sven Nieuwpoort het duel aan met FC Emmen-invaller Omran Haydary (onderstaand beeld).

Haydary zoekt daarop de weg terug naar rechtsback Glenn Bijl. Vervolgens schakelen beide spelers om. Sven Nieuwpoort sprint naar zijn plek tussen rechter centrale verdediger Myenty Abena en linker centrale verdediger Lars Nieuwpoort en Haydary sprint als linkerspits in een twee-spitsen-systeem naar een plekje tussen Abena en Sven Nieuwpoort in.

Bijl loopt ondertussen iets door en heeft – terwijl Sven Nieuwpoort (gele cirkel) en Haydary (zwarte cirkel) nog in volle sprint zijn – een splijtende pass in huis tussen de gebroeders Nieuwpoort door. Abena (rode cirkel) lijkt te verwachten dat Sven Nieuwpoort de bal onderschept, maar Nieuwpoort komt tekort. Haydary maakt gebruik van de situatie en glipt tussen beide door, gaat één-op-één met Bednarek en schiet FC Emmen op 0-2.

Omdat De Graafschap hier zonedekking lijkt te willen hanteren móet de pass van Bijl onderschept worden om zo de zone in het centrum af te schermen. Dit kan door zowel Lars Nieuwpoort als broer Sven gedaan worden, beiden onderscheppen de pass echter niet. Omdat dit niet gebeurt valt de verdediging als een kaartenhuis ineen.

Hoe kan het dat De Graafschap toch zoveel punten pakte? Simpelweg omdat in de wedstrijden tegen Jong PSV en FC Emmen persoonlijke kwaliteit uiteindelijk ervoor zorgde dat De Graafschap met een punt achter bleef. Tegen Jong PSV kopte Anthony van den Hurk een bal geweldig binnen voor 2-2.

Tegen FC Emmen brengt Henk de Jong Sjoerd Ars en Youssef El Jebli. Ars maakt samen met Van den Hurk voorin oorlog en uiteindelijk scoren beide aanvallers een goal. El Jebli is in de tussentijd de drijvende kracht achter het opportunistische spel dat De Graafschap vanaf dan gaat spelen. Zo opportunistisch dat Daryl van Mieghem (!) op een gegeven moment zelfs als een veredelde rechtsback speelt.

Andere oorzaak voor het feit dat De Graafschap toch punten weet te pakken is omdat het speelt tegen relatieve – op dat moment – laagvliegers in de competitie, waardoor enkele individuele hoogtepunten genoeg zijn om een resultaat te halen.

Overschakelen naar 4-3-3

Onder druk van zo'n beetje alles en iedereen bij De Graafschap switcht Henk de Jong na de wedstrijd tegen FC Emmen van formatie. Er volgen tot aan de rampzalige maand december – daarover morgen meer – 8 wedstrijden waarin De Graafschap slecht één keer verliest (W4-G3-V1), maar waarin het spel nog onwennig is.

In die reeks speelt de ploeg van Henk de Jong wel zijn beste wedstrijd van het seizoen. De galavoorstelling bij Jong Ajax waarin alles lukt voor De Graafschap en er met 0-5 gewonnen wordt in Amsterdam. Absoluut hoogtepunt in die wedstrijd is de assist van Mark Diemers voor de 0-4 op Daryl van Mieghem. Van Mieghem is belangrijk voor De Graafschap dit seizoen.

Vanaf het moment de De Jong terugkeerde naar een 4-3-3 opstelling, bloeide de rechtsbuiten helemaal op. Voornamelijk omdat hij vanaf dat moment alle vrijheid krijgt aan de rechterkant. Met zijn snelheid en rushes langs de lijn is de van Heracles gehuurde buitenspeler levensgevaarlijk.

NEC-thuis enige uitglijder De enige echte uitglijder in die reeks is het thuisduel tegen NEC, op dat moment de koploper van de Jupiler League. Het begint met de blessure van Abena. De rechtsback van de Graafschap raakt in een duel met Groeneveld geblesseerd aan zijn onderbeen, Groeneveld gaat door en scoort 0-1. Vervolgens gaat De Graafschap vol op zoek naar de 1-1 en krijgt die via Daryl van Mieghem. Via Braken en Golla gaat het alsnog verkeerd voor de Superboeren; 1-3. Deze wedstrijd brengt twee belangrijke zaken aan het licht.

Allereerst laat het zien dat Andrew Driver in verdedigend opzicht tekort komt in topwedstrijden.

Bovenstaande is de situatie die voorafgaat aan de vrije trap waaruit de 1-2 voor NEC valt. Als Driver op de been blijft en Rayhi (het duel in de zwarte cirkel) voor zich houdt, wordt de kans op een voorzet veel kleiner omdat Lars Nieuwpoort (rode cirkel) rugdekking geeft en Rayhi kan opvangen. Nu maakt Driver de overtreding. Daardoor krijgt NEC de vrije trap op die gevaarlijke plek en kopt Ars de bal richting eigen doel, kan Bednarek nog net redden waarna Braken simpel binnen kan tikken. Daarnaast toont het aan dat de opstelling – vooral qua creativiteit in de voorste linie – in topwedstrijden tekort schiet.

De Graafschap is met El Jebli en Diemers als aanvallende middenvelders extreem gevaarlijk tijdens de omschakelmomenten van verdediging naar aanval. Probleem is alleen dat de bal tijdens zo'n snelle aanval alleen naar Van Mieghem kan. Serrarens is een zelfde type als Sjoerd Ars en moet het niet van zijn snelheid hebben. Daardoor is het aanvalsspel van De Graafschap eenvoudig te voorspellen. Een typische linksbuiten (met snelheid) wordt node gemist in het aanvalsspel van De Graafschap.

Cal Competes For Championship At CRC 7s

Golden Bears Back To Philadelphia Saturday & Sunday

BERKELEY – The Golden Bears compete this weekend at the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby 7s Championship in Philadelphia, where California joins the six-pool, 24-team field at Talen Energy Stadium. Cal takes on Indiana at 11:10 a.m. ET to begin play in Pool C Saturday, followed by Colorado at 1:30 p.m. ET and Life at 3:15 p.m. ET. The Bears' first and last matches of pool play are on ESPN+. Other pools at the CRC include Clemson, Lindenwood, Temple and Virginia Tech in Pool A; Notre Dame, Penn State, St. Bonaventure and UCLA in Pool B; Boston College, Iona, Kutztown and Wisconsin in Pool D; Arizona, Fordham, Saint Joseph's and Saint Mary's in Pool E; and Army, Dartmouth, Navy and South Carolina in Pool F. The six pool winners from Saturday's matches will be joined by the two next-best teams in Sunday's championship bracket, culminating with the championship cup final at 4:30 p.m. ET. Television coverage Sunday is on ESPN2 and ESPNEWS. Cal, five-time national 7s champions from 2013-17, has won all three 7s events it has entered so far this year and comes into the 2019 CRC with a season record of 17-0 in the Olympic form of the game. The Bears carry with them an all-time 7s record of 169-18-0 (.903), including an all-time mark of 43-3 (.934) at the CRC. In its pool, Cal has seen Life four times before at the CRC and won them all, beating the Running Eagles in the 2012 bronze medal match, 22-12; the 2013 final, 19-14; the 2015 semifinals, 33-5; and the 2017 final, 19-0. The 2019 CRC will be the first 7s action for the Running Eagles since last year at the same event, when Life went 4-1, beating Notre Dame and Air Force, and Penn State twice, including 12-5 in the quarterfinals, before falling to eventual champion Lindenwood in the semifinals, 17-7. The Bears are 3-0 all-time vs. the Buffaloes in 7s but will be facing them for the first time at the CRC. The Buffs most recently went 3-0 at the Rocky Mountain 7s after advancing to the final of the Las Vegas Invitational 7s in February, when Colorado upset Kutztown, 19-17, in the semis following shutouts of Saint Joseph's and Clemson. Cal bested Indiana in both their previous meetings in 7s, winning in the 2017 CRC semifinals, 29-14, and in pool play at the 2018 USAR 7s, 34-14. The Hoosiers enter the 2019 CRC coming out of the Big 10 7s series this spring, highlighted a 4-2 showing at the Northwestern 7s. Indiana most recently competed at the USAR College 7s, where the Hoosiers' highlights were wins over USC, 27-10, and Arkansas, 15-12. The student-athletes selected for Cal's CRC campaign are led by senior captain Nic Mirhashem, a member of Cal's 2017 CRC championship team as a sophomore. Senior Troy Lockyear, a 2018 All-American, is set to compete in his first CRC, as is senior Elliot Webb, whose brother Russell is now an international player for Hong Kong after captaining Cal's 2017 CRC championship team in his final season. Selections from the Bears' junior class start with Sam Cusano, MVP of the 2017 CRC (pictured above), and continue with Christian Dyer, set to make his second trip to Philadelphia. Ken Kurihara, who contributed three tries and six conversions to Cal's 2018 PAC 7s title, will play in his first CRC. Half the Bears' squad is comprised of frosh-sophs, from sophomores Sam Golla, Adam Roeske and Marcus Shankland, to freshmen Henry Poon, Sam Walsh and Jason Severance. All members of Cal's most recent PAC 7s championship team, they will be playing in their first national 7s postseason with the exception of Shankland, who competed at the 2018 USAR College 7s. "It has been a long season, but this always an exciting way to wrap things up," said head coach Jack Clark. "Half of our 12 players have never participated in the CRC, which results in us being overall inexperience for the task at hand. This said, the team is looking forward to the challenge. A member of the U.S. Rugby Hall of Fame, Clark leads the Golden Bears with a fellow Hall of Famer in associate head coach Tom Billups. Together, they have coached the Bears throughout their nascent 7s history and all five of Cal's national 7s titles. Cal's first CRC championship team in 2013 included future USA Olympian Danny Barrett, who excelled on the international stage at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio and is poised once again to represented the United States at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
