Liane was picking up her phone and purse getting ready to rush out the door. Mia was sitting in the living room chair as Eli was playing with his toys on the floor as the TV played in the background.

“You sure you want me to go?” Liane asked reapplying her lipstick and rambling, “Cause I can always reschedule or cut my business day eariler. I know it won’t be profitable or professional for my clients but Luna said she was busy picking wedding flowers with Rochelle, so she might not have time to make to her appointment anyway and..”

“Honey, honey, honey!” Mia repeated sipping her orange juice as she looked up from her phone.

“What?”

“You’re starting to sound like me.

“Huh?…Oohhh! Yikes, yeah, nope! I should go soon then, shouldn’t I?”

“Yes you should, Luna and Ricky’s wedding is coming and Luna might keep making excuses to not come to your store, cause she doesn’t want to bother you, if you don’t show up.”

“Ughhh you’re so right! Oh my goodness yeah no, nope I gotta head out! Promise me you won’t sit all day and watch Bluey with Taylor!”

“Of course not…Now go!”

Liane kissed Eli’s face telling him to not let ice cream all day with his mother and was ushered out the door by Mia, before the blonde can return back inside. Mia closed the door behind her letting out a sigh and picked up the 6 year old boy sitting him on the couch with her. He giggled as his Momma handed him a piece of an old fashioned glazed donut.

“Yummy! Technically not ice cream.” Elliot says munching on the donuts, “Mama gone, can we watch Bluey now?”

“Oh yeah! Mama thinks Bluey is a little overrated but we love it. What if we watch Phineas and Ferb too?” Mia said as she suggested the other show with a grin.

“YES! Can we do the musical one?”

“You are definitely our kid.”

Half an hour later, the two sat on the couch watching Bluey and Phineas & Ferb episode as they enjoyed some snacks. The two were singing along to the entire episode of Phineas & Ferb, chuckling and making silly comments across the series. They even decided to watch Moana.

“I love this movie!” Mia chuckled taking a bite of her apple slices.

“Just don’t sing the boy parts, Mommy!” Elliot remarked.

“I can’t make promise i can’t ke—”

That was when her phone rang. It was Mr. Jameson! As Mia picked up the phone call, the phone practically shook with her boss’s booming voice.

“Where the heck are you, Parker?! You better not be lying around! I needed those photos 4 hours ago!” Jameson yelled over the phone.

“I um…well..heh, today is my day off, sir. I’m at home right now, tomorrow I go back to work.” Mia replied gently, very startled by her boss’s booming voice that almost broke her ear drums.

“UGHHH! I thought one of my employees said you were here today! They lied! Just then those damn pictures over the web or whatever you kids do in this modern day!”

As she heard JJJ ranting and babbling about god knows what, Mia text Maria Hill and her other phones if they can watch her son for a bit. Sadly some of them were busy and others were taking the day to relax. Maria Hill was spending the day with Natasha and their grandchildren. Then she glanced at her costume laying around in the other room and smirked exchanged a cheeky grin with Elliot. He grinned brightly.

“Gee sir!” Mia said loudly over the phone that was on speaker, “I don’t really know to use the web that well. Maybe just can just swing by real quick?”

Elliot chuckled, “HA HA!”

“Whatever Parker, just get here as soon as possible!” Jameson shouted then hung up.

So Mia strapped on her Ruby Webb suit with a backpack and extra water bottles carrying Elliot as she swung across the city. The mother-son pair chatted and waved at citizens, even swinging by the windows of buildings as they crossed a park. Mia was so focused on making sure Elliot was strapped in her arms safely as she swung across the streets, she didn’t noticed Sandman until her son pointed out.

“Momma is that the Sandy guy?” He pointed out in awe with a little smile.

“Sandman?!” She exclaimed, under the domino mask and a hoodie of her suit.

“Can we play with him please?”

“I don’t know, baby..”

“Pleaseeee!”

“…uhhh okay, fine, maybe just real quick.”

Mia climbed down and landed in the park carrying Eliot. To her surprise Sandman was messing around with strangers, playing with kids and causing a huge mess per se. But he seemed harmless today, cause the kids and teenagers surrounding him weren’t upset despite the area being a little silly looking.

“Hey Sandy! Can you watch this little guy for me? It will be just a second, I’m gonna an errand right now!” Mia said cheerfully holding up her son who smiled brightly waving at William, “Thanks!”

“Uhm sure, Webby.” He said a little surprised at the unexpected moment with a half smile.

“Hehe thank you! He likes big slides.”

Elliot grinned, “Do a monster truck!”

He took Sandman’s hand running off to play with the other days, seeing his friends there too. Mia chuckled staying for a few seconds watching them, almost immediately losing track of time but then Mr. Jameson called her phone. She whined and rushed off to The Daily Bugle.

She snuck into a window, changing into a blazer that was in her office and sweating her hair into a ponytail before slipping out of the bathroom. Her co-worker Charlie Olsen, waved at her handing the girl extra papers to show their boss and apologize for her coming in today. Mia smiled and told him that it’s okay, it wasn’t his fault. Jake Kwan, Liane’s assistant, must’ve accidentally mistakenly sent a text message wrong to JJJ or something.

She grabbed the folder with the photos from her backpack as she rushed into Jameson’s office.

“Um, hi! Here are the pictures you wanted, sir.” Mia said entering the office holding the folder filled with of The Avengers fighting downtown last weekend.

Jameson stood up from his seat and exclaimed in his loud booming voice, “What took you so damn long?”

“I just got in like a few minutes ago from Manhattan..”

“So? You want me to be impressed by that, Parker?”

“Um, no-no sir. I had to drop my kid off with a babysitter, so it took me a few minutes to get here. You do have kids, don’t you sir?”

“Don’t sass me Parker!”

“I…I was—sorry. Would that be all, Jameson?”

“Yes Parker, that would be all. Next time i want photos of those vigilante and newcomers heroes that keep popping up, like those X-men! Young Avengers too! And other heroes at events!”

She handed him the pictures as he looked them over. He went on a discussion about other things as he did. Mia just nodded quietly listening to him talk and walked out, taking a breath wiping her eyes at Jameson’s rude tone and booming voice. Charlie asked if she was okay and needed a moment before heading back home. Mia nodded sitting at her desk and wiping her eyes grabbing a sip of water, something she understood what Liane and her friends said about Jameson’s attitude towards people can bruise people’s feelings.

But she liked her job, as she was able to take photographs and write articles. After a few moments she picked herself up from the chair and removed her remembering that she had her son to pick up, as she rushed out the building swinging onto the buildings as Ruby Webb. She can deal with her own problems later over dinner or whatever.

Elliot was sitting in a monster truck as Sandman made a bunch of sand based items for the kids. He was definitely Liane’s son asking for a specific thing, in this case sand toy looking truck.

“Uh, like this?” Sandman looked up at sandy monster truck.

“No!” Elliot sassed him with a big smile, “Make it more like a Hot Wheels toy! With big wheels and a cool door. And flames pictures on the door.”

“Uhhh..”

That’s when Mia swung in waving, “Hey there! I hope he wasn’t too much trouble for ya!”

She climbed over to the monster truck and picked him up, telling him it’s time to go.

Her son smiled, “He made a truck!”

“I can see that, baby! But he got a little lazy on the details huh?” She added.

The rest of the day was spend going to the store for a quick shopping trip, buying McDonald’s and playing at the park together. Then Mia swung them home, texting Liane about the grocery she bought, as they unpacked the groceries together.

A couple of hours later, Liane walked in removing her jacket and heels calling out to the house that she’s back home. She smiled seeing the two of them back on the couch once again, right where she left them earlier that morning.

“Aside from the obvious grocery store trip, did you guys get off the couch today?” Liane asked joining them on the couch, guessing there must’ve been something else they did today.

“Only to use the bathroom and wash dirty laundry we had in the hamper.” Mia responded looking up from the iPad.

Of course Elliot answered with a smile, “That’s no true, Mama! We played at the park too and a lot of other stuff. We just sat down to watch Sleeping Beauty and Tangled.”

Liane grinned at the mention of her favorite movies, “Now that’s more like it! Make room for me.”

The three of them sat down cuddling on the couch to watch Sleeping Beauty tonight. Elliot cuddled on his Mama’s lap as Liane rested her head on Mia’s shoulder. She glanced at the brunette for a second, “You okay?”

“Yeah i’m fine..” She added softly, brushing it off.

“Mia.”

“What? I’m fine.”

“You’re not fine. I don’t want to call Petra or anyone to know what happened. I’ll find out later after dinner right?”

“Um..yeah. Uh huh. I’ll tell you later.”

“Okay. Oh! Work was good, we got a pretty decent deal on new equipment and the dress we started for Luna is beautiful.”

The brunette smiled at the blonde’s expression and how she explained how her day went. Usually it was the brunette who was listening to her issues and coming up with a smooth form of comfort. The blonde knew something was up but she knew she will find out eventually, so it was better that she leave it alone until later.

Life for them was never always sunshine and rainbows, was it? But they try their best to handle it.

Now just enjoy the movie.

ANON, ty ty ty for sending in! Halloween is like...days ago, but it's never too late for oc talk! 🥹✨ I shall answer both either way hehe!

Trick: OC that most likely to pull a prank?

Answer: well, the band of misfits in my head consists of Zephyr, Irene, Sage and Sorrel. I think the most likely to pull a prank so effortlessly would definitely be Zeph. He would pull the most harmless pranks, just for the sake of funsies especially to his buds and he'll have a good laugh. His friends honestly saw it coming, and he knows cute baby pranks for his fav nephew. But, Zeph is the king of pranks!

Treat: what is your OC's comfort food?

I'll list some of the ones I'm having brainrot hehe!

Maia: chocolate chip cookies (always)

Raylene: any pasta. Pasta during a rainy day, with a good movie. Perfecto!

Summary : Today on Buzzfeed Unsolved, we look into the Murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

“Today on Buzzfeed Unsolved, we’re digging into a rather famous case,” Ryan begins, a grin on his face. “Its actually a case I grew up hearing about, and one that I like to keep an eye on from time to time. So I was, very, excited to get permission to do this case.”

“Oh, is this what I think it is?” Shane questioned.

“You saw the file,” Ryan gave his friend a look.

“Yeah, but I wasn’t sure if it was a file or just a list of things you wanted to talk about if you ever got permission,” Shane protested. “I mean, you’ve brought this case up pretty frequently.”

“Yes, yes, that is definitely the case,” Ryan agreed, turning a giddy grin to the file. “Today, ladies and gentlemen, we’re looking at the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.”

“This is going to be interesting,” Shane clapped.

“Was that sarcastic?”

“No.”

“It felt sarcastic.”

“Eh…maybe a little. You do go on and on about this case.”

“Yeah, but only, like, vague details.”

“Sure. Vague.”

Ryan shot Shane a look, to which Shane stared right back with a flat look. After a moment, Ryan turned away and flipped over the file.

“Shall we begin?”

“Yeah, of course,” Shane motioned with a flippant wave of his hand. “Let’s begin!”

A giddy grin filled Ryan’s face as he turned to the case file.

“On June 26th, at 10:47 pm, the world lost two of the kindest rich people anyone could have met. But first, let’s get a bit into their background. Doctor Thomas Wayne-”

“Wait. Doctor? Thomas Wayne was a Doctor?”

“Yeah! I was getting there! Let me get there!”

“Okay. Okay. You’ve just never mentioned he was a doctor, before.”

“I told you, you didn’t know everything. There’s a lot about this family I haven’t mentioned.”

“Well now I’m intrigued.”

“Doctor Thomas Wayne was born the son of Patrick Wayne and Laura Elizabeth Wayne. This made Thomas Wayne one of the last living descendants of the Five Families of Gotham.”

“Five Families.”

“Yeah…I…don’t know why I included that.”

“You weren’t going to explain?”

“I am now.”

“The Five Families of Gotham are the Crowne Family, which died out years ago with Amelia Crowne, though their of rumors of an illegitimate child. Maybe we’ll do that another time. The Cobblepot family, and we all know what happened to that family. The Elliots, Kanes, and Waynes. These Five Families are credited to helping build Gotham.”

“Doctor Thomas Wayne dedicated his time to his medical studies, his family company, to helping the Glades, and to his family. Doctor Thomas Wayne was originally not the inheritor of the Wayne fortune as he was the youngest child of the Waynes. But Philip Wayne died in Afghanistan, and Agatha Wayne renounced her family name when she married into the Carson family. Doctor Thomas Wayne, with a full medical degree, and a budding physician having started a free clinic in Park Row, found himself the inheritor of a multi-million dollar company.”

“Park Row?”

“Better known as Crime Alley.”

“Oh! Wait…it’s name isn’t actually Crime Alley?”

“Yeah, surprising, right?

“Martha Wayne was born into another Founding Family. The Kane Family. Her family history, of course, is a little rockier in the public eye than most of the world’s wealthy would prefer. Nathan Kane married a woman named Kathy Webb and was disowned, losing his grasp of the inheritance. Philip Kane is the inheritor, and the line might just die out with him. Jacob Kane lost his first wife and one of his daughters, remarried, and became an army general. Arthur Kane is recluse and not staying with his family. Martha Wayne seemed to break out.”

“Good for her.”

“Wow.”

“What?”

“You just seem pretty on board with that.”

“Well, yeah. I like history.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“A lot.”

“You’re not…you’re not…going to…elaborate?”

“Nope! That’s an entirely different video.”

“Oh…kay.”

“Martha Wayne married Doctor Thomas Wayne as one of many acts of rebellion. Martha’s mother didn’t approve of the marriage at all, and even threatened to disown Martha. Martha’s other most notable act of rebellion was to become a social worker.”

“I like this couple more and more.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. Here are two people. Helping others.”

“That they did.”

“Most people with money would just… throw it on junk. Not them. They seem like good people.”

“Later, Doctor Wayne and Martha welcomed a son into the world. Bruce Thomas Wayne. Then, eight years later, while taking their son to a movie in Park Row, a man stepped out of the shadows. As told by the account of Bruce Wayne, the only surviving witness, the mysterious man demanded their money and Martha’s pearls. However, the two barely had a chance to grab said items before the first bullet was fired. Thomas Wayne died almost immediately with that first shot. Martha moved to grab her son, but that was when the second shot was fired, and she, too, died almost instantly, according to police reports. A couple hours later, the police arrived.”

“That poor kid.”

“Yeah, I know. He was with his parents for a couple hours.”

“His parents just died, and he’s probably sitting there, begging them to wake up. And no one is there to help. That’s…that’s terrible. I’m surprised the guy wasn’t more messed up.”

“You could probably argue he was a little messed up.”

“Really?”

“Well, he did disappear for a few years, then reappear acting like a, you know, a floozy rich guy.”

“What?”

“Maybe we’ll cover that another time, too. But, long story short, Bruce applied to the FBI, got in, then quit the FBI, disappeared, and came back as a generous, but perky rich playboy.”

“That…that’s…”

“Now that we’ve talked about the Waynes and their murder. Let’s talk about why this case is unsolved and then get into a few theories. To begin, the Wayne Murder case was never solved. Mainly because the only living witness besides the killer, was Bruce Wayne, an eight year old boy who was left beside his parents bodies for hours. The shock definitely kicked in, and because of how dark it was, Bruce was unable to see the man’s face.”

“Of course a traumatized boy wouldn’t be able to identify his parents’ killer! What the heck do people expect!”

“Yeah…not the GCPD’s finest moment.”

“The First theory is that the Falcone Family did the hit.”

(Wheeze) “A mob hit?”

“Yeah, we definitely don’t get those all that often, do we?”

“We never get those!”

“This theory actually has some weight. It’s rumored that Thomas Wayne was actually a close friend of Francesco Falcone. A bond that formed when Thomas Wayne supposedly saved Francesco Falcone’s life during a mob hit. It’s also rumored that Thomas and Martha met at one of Francesco Falcone’s parties.”

(Cackling!)

“What?”

“If this theory is true, then my respect for Martha Wayne has skyrocketed! That woman was a rebel!”

“Really? After everything I just said, that’s what you want to go with.”

“The Kanes were jerks. I’m allowed to be proud of the woman.”

“However, its also noted that at some point, Thomas and Falcone stopped talking to each other. Their friendship supposedly fell apart, and if they left on bad terms, its possible that the Falcone family ordered the hit. However, unless the GCPD is covering it up, there is no proof behind this theory, nor is there much proof that Thomas and Falcone ever actually had a friendship other than a few pictures of the two at parties. And, if you know nothing about Gotham, you should know that Gang Leaders mixing with the Elites is…pretty common.”

“Too common.”

“Way too common.”

“But, I’ll be honest, I’m not sure this theory has too much weight.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I mean, think about it. Saving someone’s life is…a pretty serious debt. Like, a life for a life debt, except you save it. If Doctor Thomas really saved Falcone, then the betrayal had to be dead awful for him to turn like that.”

“That’s…that’s a good point. We’ll put that theory on hold, then.”

“The second theory is that the Court Of Owls planned the hit.”

“The Court of Owls?”

“Yeah. You heard of them?”

“Yeah, I’ve heard of them. If you had mentioned this, before, I might have been way more interested in this case.”

“Wow, I had no idea you were so excited about this.”

“It’s history, Ryan! Of course I’m excited about it!”

“You realize this is Gotham’s biggest Ghost Story, right?”

“Of course. But I also know the history around it.”

“The Court of Owls are a long standing legend in Gotham. The rumors claim that the court is comprised of Elites, supposedly related to the Crowne family. According to legend, the Court recruits elites into their system, and they recruit civilians to be assassins. These assassins kill those that oppose the Court.”

“That was a rough version of the Court of Owls. Not bad.”

“Thank. But now I’m curious to know what you know.”

“Maybe another time. Its too long to go into.”

“It’s believed that Thomas and Martha Wayne opposed the Court of Owls, and because of this, they were killed by a Talon.”

“I’d agree with that...”

“Really?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I would. If ever there was a conspiracy theory I’d believe, it’s the existance of the Court of Owls. The history is fascinating.”

“Wow, I guess we…really need to do a history lesson on the Court of Owls.”

“The only thing that I think is a little sketchy is the fact that they…left Bruce Wayne alive.”

“Oh?”

“It’s not their style. Unless Bruce Wayne agreed to join the Court. But…given his charities and stuff, I doubt it.”

“Huh. I guess that’s fair.”

“The third theory…”

“What?”

“You’re gonna hate this?”

“Don’t say aliens.”

“Nope. Not aliens.”

“The third theory is that Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered by a ghost.”

“No.”

“Oh, yes!”

“Ryan. No!”

“The Wayne family went through Park Row, a place well known as Crime Alley. There are a number of Crimes that happen there in a day, so its no wonder a large population believe the mysterious killer that was never caught and never seen was that of a ghost who lost his life in a mugging attempt where he failed.”

“The Court of Owls theory holds more weight than this.”

(Cackling)

“You know what, I can and will deny this theory. Forget this theory.”

“How does this hold less weight than the Court of Owls.”

“I need to give you a history lesson.”

“The fourth theory is that it was an inside job done by the GCPD. Due to the fact that the guy was never caught, and the history of police corruption, its not surprising that this was a theory that popped up. In fact, up until Jim Gordon became Commissioner, many cases in Gotham like this one were swept under the rug.”

“Good old Jim Gordon.”

“He was on this case, actually.”

“He was?”

“Yep. In fact, it’s rumored that this particular case was what led Gordon to turn the GCPD around. And he’s supposedly still close to Bruce Wayne.”

“Really?”

“His daughter dated Bruce’s oldest son.”

“Nice.”

“With all these theories, there still isn’t any clear answer as to who killed Thomas and Martha Wayne. And that leaves this particular case…Unsolved.”

“They don’t deserve that,” Shane sighed.

“Yeah, they seemed like genuinely good people for rich people,” Ryan agreed with a nod. “What do you think happened?”

Shane winced, scratching the back of his head. “Right. I like the Court of Owls theory, but…I think it was a rando mugging.”

“Then…then how do you explain the lack of a suspect?”

“Police corruption. The Waynes were trying to turn Gotham around. A few corrupt cops just…swept it under the rug.”

“That’s…” Ryan froze, looking down at his files. “That’s actually not a bad theory. Why didn’t anyone use that theory.”

“Maybe they’re not supposed to.”

“That’s terrifying. Absolutely terrifying.”

... .... .... ..... .... .... .... ....

“ This is...”

Jason paused, sending a look towards his younger brother.

“Genius?” Tim gave a sharp, Cheshire grin.

“Definitely,” Jason grinned back. “What exactly did you give them permission to do?”

“You’ll have to wait and see.”

Ghost Junk Sickness by @studiocartridge

Trigger Elliot is a bounty hunter who travels around the galaxy with his not-so-fully-licensed-and-technically-illegal-hunting-partner Vahn Gavotte. They're lousy at what they do and often resort to petty tactic just to get a bounty. This is their life. Their home planet, June 7, is a world rebuilding itself form an inexplicable catastrophic phenomenon that destroyed 75% of the planet's surface. It has been 5 years since the destruction of June 7 and the planet now thrives on the transient and growing population of bounty hunters. Trigger and Vahn's routine changes when an ambiguous huge bounty surfaces; an alleged bounty hunter killer named "the Ghost" with frightening abilities and an unknown motive. When Trigger's past catches up with him, there begins a strain on his and Vahn's hunting dynamic, forcing them to become further involved in chasing the elusive and unpredictable ghost. Ghost Junk Sickness is an action packed sci-fi LGBTQ+ comic created by CARTRIDGE.

Kochab is a YA wlw fantasy comic about two girls lost in a pile of ruins under the woods, inspired by various myths and fairytales. A lost skier trying to survive a snowy wilderness and find her way back to her village stumbles across and awakens a fire spirit trying to fix the home that she’s let fall apart around her.

Shaderunners by Alex Assan & Lin Darrow

A thousand years ago, the last colour in the world faded to grey. Now, after the great archaeological discovery of Queen Sorizahana’s shade-stocked tomb, it stands ready to enter the world again. Ironwell City will become the birthplace of the burgeoning colour industry, where colour is pumped out of factories, poured into perfumed bottles and sold at exorbitant prices to those wealthy enough to afford the luxury. At least, that’s the plan according to the Five Financiers of the Sorizahana excavation. One part Prohibition fantasy, one part Robin Hood, and a whole lot of epic heist, Shaderunners follows a group of ragtag bootleggers and bohemians who band together in an effort to steal colour from the wealthy echelons of Ironwell’s high society. Among them: a philosopher, a puppeteer, a gutter rat, an opera singer, a naval officer and a hopeless romantic. Together, they run The Glass Dial, former watch shop and future night club, where all the house drinks run red. Speak easy, pal, ‘cause the road to ruin is paved with good intentions.

Augustine follows the adventure of August and her friends: Brick, Heti and Ande as they survive in the perilous region known as the Crater. You can call them all Trouble (with the capital T) as they wrack up bounties for their rowdiness, most especially from the local head honcho Tanto the Bull. During these escapades, however, the group stumbles into an ancient artifact, a possible piece of an old myth surrounding the Crater. This discovery soon leads them down a path of chaos, chased by bounty hunters and old forgotten gods. This comic uses aspects of Greek Mythology, and delves into concepts of ancient relics and the deities they represent and what it means to find your own family.

Books that get funky with bisexual mains

...and one movie.

Hi, I'm bisexual and I read a lot! There are a lot of bi characters of sensational quality in books, but this is not a compilation of all the bi characters I have encountered, or even all the ones in books I recommend! Instead, this post is about books (and one movie) that I think do interesting things with writing about bisexuality, whether that's depicting nuanced experiences, or structuring entire plots that wouldn't be possible without a bi main.

I'm also not trying to claim these are higher quality than "bi the way" representation, but I think it's fun to do a roundup of books that go deeper. Some of these write-ups contain spoilers, but I didn't include anything I feel I personally would be disappointed to know going in.

Spotlight on: you know what that is? growth.

These are all books that make me think about bisexuality's journey in popular fiction, as well as being about personal journeys.

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan. This is a very fun YA book that explores, pokes, and sends up tropes of both high fantasy and contemporary coming-of-age stories. It follows Elliot throughout his teen years, including relationships with girls and boys, and growing into his aesthetic tastes and moral compass.

It's funny and heartfelt, and included here because it's unusual both to have a book where such a young person knows he's bisexual before the book begins (Elliot is initially thirteen and has had a crush on a boy before), and where the reader gets to follow a character through the maturation of their queer identity. A lot of YA stories are only about coming out, or only about one relationship, but this is a book about growing into yourself in many ways.

Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. This is a 1987 cult classic of tremendous influence on the current fantasy scene. GRR Martin, Neil Gaiman, and Megan Whalen Turner are among the authors I know have praised it. It's a fundamental text of the fantasy of manners subgenre, and a great example of the subgenre I wish would coin a name--historical fiction for places that don't exist.

Two of its four core characters are also bi men. One has a variety of relationships, and is our window into the setting's high society, and the other is a professional duelist whose love for a disgraced scholar forces him into a dramatic series of power plays. It's a teacup rose of a book, lots of detail on a small scale, centered on personal stakes. This is a great choice if you want to remember bi representation isn't uber-new, and read about how queerness can be influenced by class.

Slippery Creatures by K.J. Charles. This is the start of a romantic spy thriller trilogy about WWI vet Will Darling, who inherits an antiquarian bookshop and discovers that somewhere in it is hidden a formula that both the government and a criminal organization want.

Will only has one love interest in the trilogy, the warm but secretive Lord Arthur "Kim" Secretan, but the fact that he's bi is never an afterthought. His best friend Maisie is a former girlfriend of his, and he expresses attraction in passing to everyone from Kim's platonic fiancee Phoebe to real world fashion designer Edward Molyneux. Some of his close friends are also bi, which makes for lovely conversations about vintage terminology. "We're ambidextrous." "I think she meant ambisexual."

Spotlight on: Cat Sebastian

Cat Sebastian gets a whole section to herself because she writes many bisexual characters. I'm inevitably going to read one of hers I haven't gotten to yet and wish I'd talked about it here. These three are highlights. Even if you pick up a different one of hers, it'll be great: she's one of very few historical romance writers who does not equate being high on the class ladder with being happier or safer, and in fact some of her characters consider it a moral deal-breaker.

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb. This is a duology with the book shown beside it, a pair of books about a set of posh best friends who fall in love with a set of former highwaymen best friends. Kit would never have turned to crime if he hadn't first been widowed, so the fact that he had a beloved wife once is as loadbearing to the plot of this romance as the fact that he's attracted to men, and Percy in particular.

A lot of romance books shy away from letting their mains have been in love before, ever. Whether it's through having characters think they've "never felt this so deeply before" or giving them ex-lovers who turned evil, they like to play up the present relationship at the expense of past ones, and this book doesn't do that. Because it allows Kit to have experienced romantic love for multiple genders in a way the text values and depends on, it does something I think is really special.

The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes. Sequel-companion to the above, can be read in either order but slightly better second. Marian and Rob are both bisexual, and in this book it doesn't affected plot events, but hugely affects their relationship with each other.

Marian has been married once and is a mother. Pregnancy was difficult for her, and she is afraid of dying if she goes through it again. She will not have sex that has a risk of conception, and cannot trust a partner who isn't fully on board with that. Neither of them had to be bi for them to work it out believably, but because they're bi, it lets them talk on terms of shared experience and trust while discussing the ways their histories shaped their relationships with their own bodies and specific acts. Very few books so explicitly address how your orientation can form your opinions about sex and parenthood well before they become relevant.

Unmasked by the Marquess. I haven't read the other two Regency Imposters books, but I think they're all about queer couples who can pass as m/f on paper? This one certainly is. Alistair is a grumpy bisexual nobleman who just wants to be debt-free and never be embarrassed in his life. Robin is...well, she's a nonbinary schemer disguised as her dead first love so she can help his sister find a husband. Also she went to Oxford.

Robin is only interested in men, but because Alistair is bi, they become interested in each other when he only knows her as a man. Neither of them has the vocabulary for the way she feels about her gender, but they work it out in a way I found believable and sensitive. Alistair was probably written as bi to wrap around Robin's arc, because his desire to be with her doesn't change as he learns about her, it just puts legal marriage on the table. Much more important to this book's inclusion in this post is that before Alistair can feel loved and supported enough to be open about his legally accepted relationship, he first has to hear from his family that they support Alistair's queerness. So often bisexuality is portrayed as only needing to be embraced if you're in a (perceived) "opposite sex" relationship; it's refreshing.

Spotlight on: Nonbinary love interests

Obviously, you don't have to be bi to date nonbinary people, but these two communities have a...twirls hair...special relationship!

River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey. This is the start of a duology about, uh, hippo cowboys in 1890s Louisiana. It's alternate history inspired by a real proposition once made by the US government, and it's all about a revenge caper to steal a bunch of hippos.

The leader of the heist team is Winslow Houndstooth, a British-Chinese rancher, and he's our bi protagonist. He talks about his exes, has one very plot-important former hookup, and is in love with Hero, the crew's explosives expert. They're black and nonbinary, and the two of them have very moving synergy. A getting-to-know-you conversation has Winslow bracing himself to be asked "So, where are you from?" and Hero bracing themself to be asked "So, what are you?" and neither question ever comes.

Book Boyfriend by Kris Ripper. PK is an aspiring novelist who's hopelessly in love with his best friend Art, whether or not it's reciprocated. To process his feelings, he writes a romance inspired by the two of them, and tries to work out whether there's a way for bookseller Art to figure out it's a declaration of love without having to talk about it. Haha.

Art comes out as nonbinary about halfway through the book, which means there's a very unusual and skillful portrayal of a character in close first person adjusting to the new pronouns of someone he cares about. More pertinently, PK and another man in his social circle talk about how being bisexual/pansexual means sometimes people who are fine with the idea of being gay are awful to them for their actual sexualities. They go on a fake date so this friend can protect his (also bi/pan) girlfriend from scrutiny, it's great.

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix. A spectacular start to a new urban fantasy series by the author of Sabriel and The Keys to the Kingdom. I love this book, it's so engaging and deft. Alternate 1980s, layered magic and mundane worlds, folklore references--if you like Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London, try this.

Art student Susan Arkshaw is looking for her biological father and instead runs smack into the gorgeous and talented Merlin, a left-handed warrior from an extended family of magical booksellers. He's also figuring out some gender stuff, and considering transition. I would not be surprised if a later book has Merlin come out as a trans woman, but as of book one, I think he's probably nonbinary. Susan is gender nonconforming in her own way, and, like Unmasked by the Marquess, this is a great dovetailing of bi identity with gender exploration--Susan and Merlin know they'll still be into each other however things develop. (This book also has the fastest introduction of transness in anything I've ever read that wasn't primarily about it. Nix emotionally grounds this book in queerness and familial love.)

Spotlight on: it's not straight if it's queer

Bi people deserve happy m/f relationships too!

Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall. The start of a romance series about contestants on a fictional equivalent of The Great British Bake Off. Rosaline is competing to better her and her daughter's financial situation, and earns self-confidence as she goes.

That she's bisexual is very important to her, and creates a lot of plot. She faces significant biphobia from her parents and various people she interacts with, and in many ways biphobia is the chief obstacle of her arc. An ex girlfriend of hers is an important supporting (and supportive) character, and Rosaline has two men as love interests, who have very different attitudes to her sexuality. This is the one to grab if you want to scream in recognition and know a happy ending is coming.

A Merry Little Meet Cute by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone. This is SUCH a good book. It's brand new, read it over Christmas if you celebrate. After all, it's a book set at Christmas, during the filming of a parody Hallmark Channel Christmas movie. Bee Hobbes (alias Bianca von Honey) and Nolan Kowalczk (alias Nolan Shaw) are, respectively, a very successful fat porn star trying to expand her casting and an ex-boy band singer trying to keep his star from burning out. They have massive unattainable celebrity crushes on each other, and now they're starring as love interests! What could possibly happen!

Both Bee and Nolan are bisexual and out professionally. They have wonderful conversations about it throughout the book, including talking about how bi stereotypes about men and women differ, how bi people being seen as sexually provocative or edgy has both helped and hurt their careers, and a sweet conversation that put me on the ground, because Nolan was one of Bee's bi icons when she was a wee teen fan. This is a heartwarming pick, but not sicky-sweet.

All the Feels by Olivia Dade. [EDIT 11/7/22: Thanks to e-b-reads, I took a second look at this book and discovered I had misinterpreted something early in the book and spent the rest of it projecting. Alex is not canonically bi, somehow. I’m not deleting my comments on it because I don’t think it would help anyone if I did, but lol this is the funniest thing I’ve ever done, how did I manage this?]

I didn't read the first book in this series and didn't need to. Lauren Chandra Clegg worked as an ER therapist until she burned out, and now she has a temporary gig babysitting impulsive actor Alexander Woodroe out of doing stuff that the tabloids can spin into bad PR for the last season of the Game of Thrones parody he stars in. They hang out and go on a road trip and annoy each other, it's very charming.

Lauren is straight and Alex is bi. It's somewhat unusual in itself to see a story where a bisexual man has a woman love interest, and more so when she isn't also queer. This book makes reference to his bisexuality regularly, but it's all of a piece with his entertaining personality. He has ADHD and a too-big heart and loves attention. I know guys like this and you probably do too. I love them, Lauren loves this one, ya love to see it, folks. This one's a pretty restful read on the bi angle. It's not a source of tension, just affection. These characters are also in their late 30s, making them the oldest in this post!

Spotlight on: you gotta have friends

Community support my beloved.

The Last Sun and its sequels by K.D. Edwards. I'm pretty sure the protagonist of this series, Rune St. John, is gay, but his queerplatonic partner (Brand) and romantic partner (Addam) are both explicitly bisexual. This is an edgy and tremendously inventive urban fantasy set among New Atlantean noble houses and their power struggles. Rune and Brand do detective and mercenary work that puts them in the path of the undead, time magic, schemes, escapes, a dinosaur... They're very cool and the magic is smart as hell.

It's very important to long-running themes of this series (3 books out of 9 planned) that the central cast has the diversity of sexual identities that it does. A major plotline focuses on Rune's revenge quest against his rapists, and the trio and their allies repeatedly invest in protecting other young people from sexual abuse and exploitation. It's a good example of being able to have a variety of orientations among nasty characters and villains without the text making any villainous implications itself. The core group members co-parent, cook food, pick on each other. They're loved and relatable, and it gives the narrative freedom.

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows. This is a lush fantasy-mystery-romance about a political marriage between noblemen from neighboring countries just exiting a long rivalry. They're trying to get to know each other, heal after acts of violence, and also figure out who keeps trying to commit murders in the family home--and also eat the most delicious-sounding food I've read in fantasy recently.

Velasin is gay, and his country is a queerphobic environment. He's moved to live with his bisexual husband Caethari and his family in their very open society. A significant part of both men's lives is queer community. Velasin had boyfriends and queer friends even when he had to be closeted, and he and Caethari consider the support of his queer friends and family crucial in navigating their marriage. There's a lot of emphasis on the interconnected nature of queer identities. Their personal growths relied on kinship and affection with trans people in their lives, and the fact Cae and Velasin have distinct sexual identities from each other is explored to a lesser, but still valuable extent. This is also an m/m book that actively ensures women are visible and active in their lives--a surprising number let women become merely incidental.

Bedrooms and Hallways (1998). Here's the one movie! Why is this in a post about books? Well, because it's my blog, and also because when I was selecting books, I kept comparing them to this movie. This is a romantic comedy about a group of friends, and what happens when one of them meets his brother's friends and the two social groups collide.

In particular, it's a story about a few people in their late 20s and early 30s questioning their sexual orientations. I'm not going to tell you who in it turns out to be bi or anything else, because I didn't know, and it was a complete roller coaster working out over 92 minutes who was going to end up together. It's one of the greatest queer romcoms ever made, that's all you need to know.

Last thoughts:

There are some really glaring shortcomings in the assortment here. Romance and gritty genres have always featured queer characters more prominently, and my exposure to bisexual characters is limited by commercial biases. There are fewer published characters of color in romantic relationships than white characters, fewer queer characters of color, fewer f/f relationships than m/m and especially m/f. It may only be because I'm nonbinary and seek out books with nonbinary characters with effort that I could think of four...and none of those have been well-publicized for the fact.

I thought of quite a few bi characters of color and/or bi women in relationships with women in books I considered including but ultimately didn't, because they just didn't do very much with exploring bisexuality. They're about queerness more broadly, address bi identity only in passing, or feature these characters as secondary friends to (often gay white men) protagonists. This is all ~good representation~ a lot of the time, but it shows me two things. One is that the publishing industry needs to take more risks in portrayals of women's sexuality and the sexuality of characters of color, by including more depth and nuance. The other is that I as an individual reader need to put more effort into seeking out what already exists.
