I will talk about atsushi and akutagawa the second I can get my thoughts in order without screaming and punching a wall and bursting into tears. but first. right now. hey do you think about that scene that one scene that scene with oda and dazai. where they're in lupin together and dazai is calling him odasaku and saying all the sorts of things he would have said in the normal timeline if they had been friends. like literally literally he is SAYING THE STUFF THAT NORMAL DAZAI SAID TO ODA IN THE DARK ERA PROLOGUE. BRINGING UP THE SUPER-HARD TOFU IS SOMETHING HE DOES IN DARK ERA (makes a joke that he was trying to commit suicide by hitting his head on extremely hard tofu). BEASTZAI SAYS EXCITEDLY THAT HE GOT TO HANDLE AN UNDETONATED BOMB-- AND IN THE DARK ERA PROLOGUE, HE'S TALKING ABOUT HOW HE WISHES HE HAD ODA'S JOB SO HE COULD HANDLE SMALL BOMB THREATS. AND THEN ODA PULLS A GUN ON HIM. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW ILL THIS MAKES ME. DAZAI SO DESPERATELY WANTS HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH ODA AGAIN, WANTS TO BE ABLE TO TALK AND LAUGH AND DRINK WITH HIM, BUT THE WAY HE ACHIEVED THAT GOAL OF ODA BEING ALIVE WAS BY CREATING A UNIVERSE IN WHICH THEY COULD NEVER TALK AND LAUGH AND DRINK. BECAUSE DAZAI, IN BEAST, IS A STRANGER TO ODA, AND A THREAT TO SOMEONE ODA CARES ABOUT. THE ONLY WORLD IN WHICH DAZAI AND ODA SIT IN LUPIN TOGETHER YEARS AFTER ODA DIED IN ALL THE OTHERS IS THE WORLD IN WHICH DAZAI TRIES TO LAUGH AND TALK AND JOKE AROUND, AND ODA PULLS A GUN ON HIM. dazai's tried so hard to make oda safe and alive because he misses him. and now that oda IS safe and alive and living a happy life? dazai still has to miss him. because they couldn't possibly be friends in this world. dazai is a threat to oda, and akutagawa, and the agency as a whole. so he can't just sit and talk and drink with oda "like before." before didn't EXIST. god i hate beastzai but this still makes me unbearably sad. and of course the ends justify the fucking means because akutagawa and atsushi are suffering and dazai kills himself and he never gets to be oda's friend in this world, but it's fine because oda is ALIVE and that's all that will ever MATTER.
