DC Comics Previews DC Horror
Tumblr media
DC Comics has released new details for it’s upcoming horror print:
On June 1, DC is launching its all-new DC HORROR imprint with THE CONJURING: THE LOVER, a five-issue monthly limited series, which serves as a prelude to the highly anticipated New Line Cinema film, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, arriving in theatres and exclusively on HBO Max Friday, June 4.
Here’s your first look at some interior pages from issue #1 by series artist Garry Brown.
This dark and haunting mystery is co-written by Daniel Johnson-McGoldrick (screenwriter, The Conjuring 2, Orphan) and Rex Ogle. The prelude introduces college student Jessica, a college freshman returning to campus after winter break, bringing with her the anxieties of last semester’s poor grades, the awkwardness of facing a boy she wishes she’d never slept with, and an undeniably unnerving feeling of being watched.
Jessica soon comes to realize that something evil has made her its target, and it will not rest until it has her in its unholy grip. But why did this sinister presence set its sights on a seemingly normal college freshman?
“It’s something that is scary, something that is good fun and something that kind of leaves you really kind of crawling underneath your skin,” said co-writer Rex Ogle in an exclusive interview for SyFy.com.
THE CONJURING: THE LOVER will also feature backup stories that further explore the mysteries of the dreaded artifact room of Ed and Lorraine Warren from The Conjuring Universe. Issue #1 contains a bloodcurdling story exploring the frightening origin of one of the items from the Warrens’ haunted artifact room, written by comics superstar and DARK NIGHTS: DEATH METAL mastermind Scott Snyder, with art by Denys Cowan (HARDWARE, THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE).
For more information on the DC HORROR imprint and THE CONJURING: THE LOVER, visit the website at www.dcomics.com and follow on social media @DCComics and @thedcnation.

Around The World At The Dubai Food Festival
Tumblr media
Dubai is a diverse country with over 200 different nationalities and if you want to sample some of these, make sure to head to Dubai during the Dubai Food Festival for culinary trip around the world. Dubai is part of the UAE, a federation of 7 emirates that united to become the UAE in 1971. It includes the capital Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Qaiwain. Winter in Dubai is peak season with temperatures in the mid 20's (as opposed to 45C and above during summer). And every year in March it plays host to its very own Dubai Food Festival!
Tumblr media
The Dubai Food Festival is held at Jumeirah Beach behind Sunset Mall to take a walk around the Beach Canteen. There's a mix of people, some in traditional abaya (for women) and thawb (for men) and the mix is international with many enjoying the cool beachside breeze and the blood red moon rising in the distance.
Tumblr media
The Beach Canteen stands are located in two adjacent clusters and there is a lot of variety. Want tacos, baos or brisket? How about fried chicken in a waffle cone? We first do a quick survey of the space deciding on what we want to come back to order. It's not easy to choose and we've only got so much stomach space (we are headed to dinner shortly afterwards).
Tumblr media
But first there's a commotion in front of the Maiz taco truck. At 5pm every day they have the "Paqui one chip challenge". We watch as people open up a red coffin shaped box and unwrap a red foil packet containing a single corn chip. What is special about this chip is that it is dusted in the Carolina Reaper chilli dust.
Tumblr media
People take a deep breath, crunch on it and swallow before reaching desperately for a bottle of milk. We have no choice but to buy one ourselves (although I'm not game to try it while I am here because we are yet to sample so much food). At 50 dirhams it isn't cheap but it is hard to find these chips. We do try the Maiz churros ice cream sandwich drizzled with lotus caramel and ice cream. The churro top is crunchy even with the ice cream and sauce and it's fantastic.
Tumblr media
Next door is the Zapiekanka truck. So what is a zapiekanka? It's a traditional Polish street food, a halved baguette topped with a range of items from a tomato based marinara to bechamel or smokey one. They're very friendly here and we order some pierogi dumplings as well as the smoky Zapiekanka. We also try some of their borscht.
Tumblr media
Zapiekanka's owner Olimpia is super friendly and explains that their borscht contains probiotics for added health benefits. It's delicious and flavoursome. I've only really had Russian borscht which is mildly sweet and creamy and cold. This is a bold soup served warm with an abundance of flavour. The pierogi are comfortingly good and served with sour cream.
Tumblr media
Olimpia loans me a traditional scarf for a photo and after the obligatory classic shot holding a zapiekanka (head back, mouth open, zapiekanka ready to be eaten) we sink our teeth into the crunchy sub. On top is bechamel, sauteed mushrooms, cheese, house smoked chicken and spring onions and it's pretty damn fabulous. We find it hard to stop at three bites no matter how hard we try.
Tumblr media
Olimpia asks if we can stay for a slice of her apple pie. Sure! It's a rectangular slice, not too sweet and served with vanilla cream sauce.
Tumblr media
We all have tokens so someone else buys from fried chicken baos from Take a Bao. With a soft, downy bao and crispy, crunchy fried chicken, a piquant, creamy mayonnaise and shredded lettuce they're bigger than most baos and generously filled.
Tumblr media
This just makes us hungry to try more. We cross the path to the other cluster of food trucks. There is so much choice that tempts us from a distance and we stop at the New York based Chick N Cone debuting at the festival. It is, as the name suggests, fried chicken in a waffle cone stand where they are busy pressing fresh waffles and shaping them into a cone. When we dither about the choice of sauce they offer to give us samples of both with the chicken. We try the chicken with both the ranch and bbq sauces and it's delicious-crunchy and saucy at the same time.
Tumblr media
This only whets our appetite further for the Jamaican jerk chicken which is smoky and gorgeous with a fantastic jerk seasoning on top. The corn cob is curious-covered in a sticky caramel, it leaves me confused. While I loved the chicken I wasn't a huge fan of the corn.
Tumblr media
Then it's time for sweets. The knafeh is a stretchy cheesy number that they cut off from a huge knafeh pan drawing enormous foot long strings of cheese.
Tumblr media
Another popular stand is the Inventing Room. Everyone exiting with their goodies emerges from a cloud of dry ice. There is a crisp waffle "taco" filled with nitrogen ice cream sprinkled in cookie crumbs like a deep fried ice cream. On top are squiggles of frozen Nutella. Heaven.
Tumblr media
We are sharing a table with another couple and notice their Dough donuts. "Please have one," they say offering us their boxes of donuts. We can't resist their kind offer and the pistachio icing donut is wonderful-it's so light in texture and freshly fried that despite the fact that we are off to dinner I can't help but take another bite. We look at the time and it's time to bid the Beach Canteen goodbye.
Tumblr media
Dinner is back in downtown Dubai. We walk through the labyrinthine faux Souk Madinat Jumeirah to get to Folly by Nick and Scott. Nick Alvis and Scott Price are two British chefs who worked with Gordon Ramsay for 15 years in London, Paris and Dubai before branching out on their own.
Tumblr media
Whilst there is an indoor section, the perfect weather means that most guests are sitting outside enjoying the perfect night. There are two floors and the upper level bar is well worth having a look at for the views of the 7 star Burj al Arab hotel and all the water activity below at the Madinat waterways.
Tumblr media
Folly have a special menu just for Dubai Food Week with three courses for 199AED which equates to around $70AUD. We start with an interesting item: jasmine rice with Marmite and courgette. It's unusual and I'm not sure if I would order it again and it comes in quite a large serve. A canape sized version would have been perfect just for a taste.
Tumblr media
The fried bread with sage, onion and spelt and caramelised onion is divine. "It tastes like Christmas" says my sometime vegetarian friend Laura. And it does indeed. Although you'd expect fried bread to be a bit greasy it isn't in the slightest bit so.
Tumblr media
I also love the main of lamb with two perfectly cooked medallions of lamb saddle. The long pine nut salad and whipped pine nut cream are also delicious and I could just eat an entire bowl of this.
Tumblr media
For dessert we enjoy the chocolate, hazelnut and malt with the bottom layer of malt cream. The chocolate is dark and fruity and the toasted hazelnuts give it a nice crunch.
Tumblr media
Our home for the next two nights in Dubai is the Renaissance Downtown hotel located in downtown Dubai. It's a stylish new hotel that opened in November 2017 and even the entry level rooms are plush, well appointed and spacious.
Tumblr media
I have a deluxe room #911. On the left when I walk in there is a spacious walk in wardrobe. The bathroom follows this and there's a separate shower with gold flecked tiles and two shower heads.
Tumblr media
There's also a free standing egg shaped bath and double sinks with Amouage toiletries. Wooden sliding doors partition off the bathroom from two sides and the toilet and bidet are in a separate room.
Tumblr media
The bedroom is also roomy with a comfortable king sized bed with excellent sheets and a good variety of pillows. The camel motif is one carried throughout the hotel with a large wall print as well as an above the bed art work.
Tumblr media
An enormous work desk is placed below the television built into the mirror opposite the bed. Some rooms like this one has a little alcove built into them where there's a lounge and cushions that affords you a view of the water below.
Tumblr media
The hotel also has a French restaurant Bleu Blanc with chef patron David Myers. The theme as you enter from the outside blue door is French provincial although the menu isn't particularly French and covers steak and seafood offerings. Service is serious and not overly friendly.
Tumblr media
Sturia Caviar Flatbread AED65/$23AUD
The caviar flatbread comes as two thin pieces of crisp cracker topped with Sturia caviar and creme fraiche. And because we are sharing them they give us a small sword to cut them.
Tumblr media
Maine Lobster roll AED70 for two/$25AUD
We start with charcoal lobster rolls that are small but generously filled with chunks of lobster. These rolls are for people that don't like mayonnaise in their lobster rolls as the amount of saffron aioli is small and they come two to a serve.
Tumblr media
Cecina de leon AED65/$23AUD
The Cecina de Leon comes in a generous portion with slices of toasted rye bread.
Tumblr media
Fragrant Lamb Ribs AED65/$23AUD
The lamb ribs are also a good sized serve for sharing and come as three racks of four ribs. They're juicy and very soft with a moreish and slightly sweet caramelised barbecue glaze with a hint of chilli spice. To the side is a dipping yogurt.
Tumblr media
Tomato salad AED60/$22AUD
The heirloom tomato salad comes topped with crunchy quinoa to give it plenty of texture.
Tumblr media
Boneless Rib Eye AED230/$84AUD
Sadly a couple of things were sold out that I wanted like the king crab beignets and the Irish Dry Aged Rib Eye but we got the boneless rib eye instead and it's very succulent and delicious-so much so that I go back for thirds of this despite claiming that I was not hungry.
Tumblr media
Charred King Prawns AED 120/$44AUD
The prawns are split down the centre and grilled and served with chilli and herbs.
Tumblr media
Mac and Cheese AED 40/$14AUD
But whatever you do, leave room for the truffle mac and cheese. It's pretty much perfection with black truffle, Comte cheese and fat tubular pasta with a crunchy coating of breadcrumbs. Apart from the truffle I love the use of Comte cheese and the tubes are great for collecting the creamy truffle infused filling so some pieces are filled with cheesy truffle cream. Need I go on? ;)
Tumblr media
Breakfast is also an impressive affair with plenty of choice with Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern stations as well as the usual Continental selection. Because Dubai is a Muslim country you won't find pork at breakfast. Instead there is a veal and beef bacon (that tastes a bit like bakkwa) as well as chicken sausages. But my favourite bits are the Middle Eastern breads, sambousek pastries and Indian egg curries. Because while in Dubai you eat Dubai style!
So tell me Dear Reader, do you always book breakfast to be included with your hotel stay? And have you ever tried a zapiekanka before?
NQN travelled as a guest of Visit Dubai but all opinions remain her own.

Another Gupta wedding brings shadowy in-laws into the fold
The infamous family’s latest mega-wedding has cemented ties with another clan already implicated in one of the Gupta’s more memorable ventures in South Africa. Now the two families are branching out in a big way.
The Gupta family last month held yet another wedding extravaganza, this time double nuptials reportedly costing in the region of R500-million. This is small change compared to a supposed $500-million (R7.1-billion) price tag on the Guptas and their new in-laws’ latest business venture: an improbable university complex in Uzbekistan.
The wedding cements ties with the Jalan family of India with whom the Guptas have already embarked on at least one healthcare venture, which is associated with a mobile health clinics scandal locally.
Since December, members of the Gupta and Jalan families have registered at least three companies in short succession before now joining two of their offspring in wedlock.
Last month’s wedding in the Northern Indian state of Uttarakhand hit a snag with a public interest court challenge to the Guptas and local authorities for flouting environmental rules at the venue at the foot of the Himalayas. A ruling setting restrictions on the event also reveals some details about what the judges called a “mega-event”.
It involved 150 guest and 150 workers, 30 tents, helicopters and hotel rooms. The local government even handed a closed state-owned hotel over for the event. According to the ruling it was really the authorities at fault for granting permission. An interdict to scrap the wedding would cause “irreparable damage to the families involved”.
More important than the grandeur is one of the brides. Shivangi Jalan married Atul and Chetali Gupta’s 21-year-old son, Shashank Singhala. The important connections here are Shivangi’s father Vishal Jalan, her uncle Murari Lal Jalan and cousin Ankit Jalan.
Especially Murari and Ankit are cropping up in recent Gupta deals in India, Dubai and, most recently, Uzbekistan.
Alwasatnews also has evidence that Murari paid for part of another recent Gupta mega-wedding, in Abu Dhabi. He contributed AED3-million, which comes to about R12-million. Jalan did not respond to emailed questions asking him to confirm this, but a cheque in his name was made out to the venue, the Emirates Palace, at the time of the wedding.
This was not the only time that large amounts of money flowed from the Jalans to persons or entities in the Gupta fold. Records show that Gupta in-law Aakash Garg (of Sun City wedding fame) was also counting on Murari Lal Jalan to send money to his 100%-owned company in Dubai, Agev Investments, in February 2018.
Murari personally provided a loan facility of AED20-million dirham (roughly R100-million). Neither Garg nor Jalan responded when asked what this loan was for.
It just so happens that Garg was at that point trying to “buy” two airplanes from the Guptas’ already-defunct Sahara in South Africa. A payment to Sahara of R20-million was intercepted by the South African Reserve Bank.
The Jalan and Gupta families have business ties at least as far back as 2015 related to the Jalans’ investment in the Indian private hospital group Medanta. This is the company behind the mobile clinic scandal in the North West and Free State.
The #GuptaLeaks previously revealed that it was Medanta and specifically its co-founder Sunil Sachdeva that feted South African bureaucrats in Dubai when the plan to supply the provinces with mobile clinics got underway. Reportedly, the plan was eventually to clinch contracts for the mobile clinics with all nine provinces in South Africa and to channel the super-profits to Dubai to build a spectacular “Health City”.
Around the same time the mobile clinic plan was taking off, the #GuptaLeaks show Medanta’s Sachdeva was forwarding contracts – showing the Jalans buying interests in a company called Global Health – to an intermediary who then immediately forwarded them to Tony Gupta.
Family ties. (Graphic: Susan Comrie) Global Health was essentially Medanta’s outsourced provider of services and the two companies later merged. The merger was already anticipated in the contracts sent to Tony Gupta, making them essentially an investment in Medanta.
The contracts are dated 26 August 2015, around the time the Mediosa deal was sealed and involved a Jalan company, Agio Image, buying shares from Sachdeva directly.
In other words, Sachdeva was letting Gupta know he had sold shares to the Jalans.
The representative of Agio Image in the contract was Murari Lal Jalan. He did not respond when asked why his investment might be of interest to the Gupta family.
The ties between the Guptas and Jalans seem to be getting more direct and to be picking up steam.
The businesses of the Jalans largely involve building grand “parks” or “hubs” for various industries. Murari Lal Jalan owns Orion I.T. Parks, which encompasses a small empire of property developments in India which, according to company records, seem to all be personally funded by Murari though a set of subsidiary companies.
Now the Jalans have joined forces with the Guptas in a plan to build an entire new university town in the Uzbek capital city Tashkent which seemingly again involves Medanta.
World of Knowledge:
In January this year Gupta in-law Garg punted a grandiose plan to the Uzbekh government:  In return for “at least” 100ha of land he and a partner would build the “World of Knowledge” from scratch.
Garg’s 50% partner in the new venture is Murari Lal Jalan, uncle of last month’s bride and Garg’s benefactor early last year.
The outlay would be a staggering $500-million (R7.3-billion) spread over either seven or 15 years (as the various pitch documents to the government differ). The plan seems far-fetched, not least because Tashkent already houses several higher education institutions including the University of Uzbekistan.
The plan seems to have come together in a rush.
On December 2018 an initial proposal was sent to the minister of higher education in Uzbekistan.
On 10 January this year, letters punting the scheme were addressed to the governor of Tashkent and the prime minister of Uzbekistan. On the same day Murari and Garg registered an Uzbek company called Minerva World of Knowledge which is supposed to manage the project.
This escalation from the education minister to the prime minister and city governor suggests the proposal may have been met with favour.
Click on the evidence docket to access the information used to investigate this story:
Minerva opened an Uzbek bank account, again on the same day, suggesting it expected a need to move money to the country before actually getting any business there.
The Jalan signing off on the proposal alongside Garg is however not Murari, but cousin-of-the-bride Ankit Jalan who heads up many Jalan companies.
These proposal letters contain a phone number and an address that provide further clues as to who is behind the mega-venture.
The phone number belongs to Vishal Jalan in Dubai. He is the father the bride, and the uncle of Ankit. He did not respond to detailed questions.
The address however belongs to a private hospital in Tashkent called Orion Medicity. This hospital is a venture of the Medanta group while also bearing the “Orion” brand name used by the Jalans. Medanta director and co-founder Sachdeva also failed to reply to questions.
The university town proposal seems like a very grand version of the Jalan projects in India where they appear to have made plans for a number of enormous parks, usually for the IT or financial services industries. A massive “Techcity” was also planned for Mauritius at some point.
There is little evidence of these parks materialising though, casting doubt on the huge Uzbek venture’s prospects as anything other than a way to move money into the country. Indian company records show that dedicated Orion companies set up to build the parks have in a number of instances done little but receive intercompany loans to buy land that remains undeveloped.
Neither Murari Lal Jalan nor Ankit Jalan responded when asked if any of their parks have ever materialised or whether the Uzbek proposal was getting off the ground.
As the Uzbek university plan goes through the paces, other Jalan-Gupta enterprises are being set up.
On 10 December last year a company called Patanjali International was registered in India. Shashank Singhala, the Gupta son that married the Jalan daughter last month, owns 49.4% while Ankit Jalan owns 33% and Achla Gupta (the mother of Vega Gupta, who married Aakash Garg at Sun City) owns 17%.
Then, on 15 January this year Patanjali India Distribution got registered. Anil Gupta, Achla’s husband, owns 99.4%. Singhala, Murari Lal Jalan and others own nominal shares.
Murari and Ankit Jalan, Aakash Garg as well as Achla and Anil Gupta failed to answer questions about these companies.
The name Patanjali refers to a tenth century Indian sage, but also to a group of Indian companies in the consumer goods industry. These include Patanjali Ayurved and Patanjali Biscuits.
As an interesting aside, back in 2014 two Gupta companies in India, LCR Investments and Gateway Infrastructure, negotiated distribution agreements with these companies that got forwarded, along with financial projections, to Tony Gupta in an email contained in the #GuptaLeaks. It would appear the Guptas were making inroads into the cookie and health food sectors.
It is not clear if these Patanjali companies are related to the new Patanjali companies the Guptas have shares in. The new companies’ names however suggest that they are in fact meant to distribute something as was envisaged in the earlier deals.
A “Market Concept” presentation contained in the #GuptaLeaks shows an international distribution value chain with Sahara, evidently the Guptas’ flagship company by the same name, on the top of a whole global value chain for health supplements.
It remains to be seen what the newly extended Gupta and Jalan families get up to next, but experience shows it will probably involve opening up new ways to move money around the world through both property development and consumer goods. Judged by the Uzbek venture their future business also promises to dwarf most of what was relieved from South African taxpayers by the Guptas.
