Abdul has a message & some photos he wanted me to share:
"Hello beautiful friends am really thankful for all your endeavors and support to me and my friends at Gorom refugee camp South Sudan,
A few months I met a friend who has turned my life into happiness despite being a refugee for five years in Kenya after I fled Uganda due to persecution and homophobia.
I entered in Kenya and lived in a refugee camp in the north western turkana region where I met other lgbt refugees.
However after all that we went through and the Kenyan government refused to expedite our cases, last year in December 2023 we had no option than to flee to South Sudan were we are not struggling with food shortages,medication plus other daily basic necessities.
With the support from you’all our beloved donors we are able to have at least a meaningful meal per day, plus paying for our medication and other daily basics.
CRY FOR SUPPORT.
I am appealing to you to please continue donating to our fundraising page plus also sharing with your socials there might be others who could sympathize with our cause as we continue asking unhcr to move us to safer places.
Yours sincerely Abdul Luyombya
Queer refugee
Gorom South Sudan. 🇸🇸"

Ectoberhaunt 2023. Day 5. Hunt and Haunt.
~Well, here we go again, good old Ghost Hunger AU~
Description: The Ghost Zone is inherently a violent place. You can hunt or be hunted, there is no other options. However, for some reason the Halfa does not understand what is happening. And no one rushes to explain it. NB! ghost cannibalism is mentioned.

Suppose there’s a conventional division among ghosts. Some of them are potential predators capable of hunting their own kind, while others are only able to absorb the surrounding energy and therefore build up power more slowly than hunters.
So, predation is used as a method of survival in poor ectoplasm areas of the Ghost Zone, less often as a means of gaining power. Even less often hunters are created.
It is obvious that the appearance of a hunter who is the son of human ghost hunters in a haunting place without stable sources of ectolasm has caused panic in the society of the dead ones. For the newly formed ghost to have ectoblasts, fangs or ghost sense is a rarity and great luck. So the newcomer had everything and more to be a serious threat. An awful danger for the surrounding spirits…Right?
But Danny doesn’t know the specifics of his new biology ectology!
Even though he’s a hunter, he’s never had a ghost hunger. Probably because thanks to his parents he has an amazing ectoplasm concentrator in the basement. Soon everyone understands that the boy does not attack first. Those who return through the portal never report any losses at all. He does not bite or attempt to capture cores of other spirits. At first, the ghosts think it's a trap. Smart enough for a beginner. Not everyone has the tenacity to pretend to be an idiot to get close to them. But the Phantom never feeds on them. He’s…safe?
What’s more, Danny seems to think they’re a threat to the city. Which is fun and weird. Normally, there is no competition for feeding using human emotion. But the owner of the lair did not like the smell of fear in the air. Is this ghost broken?
When the ghosts who visit Amity realize that the halfa does not know that he can hunt them, rather than just guard his territory...Well, it explains a lot. Everyone agrees not to explain the situation to the boy so that the city behind the portal remains a relatively safe haven during the during a "hunting season" and other troubles in the Infinite Realms.
~~~~~
The problem arises when Phantom begins exploring the Ghost Zone. What if the other hunters make the boy stop being a freak?
In addition, more experienced ghosts may well attack the careless halfa. And Amity Park under the control of a more predatory spirit would be a terrible outcome. Most dead ones near the portal are used to the fact that the area before Wisconsin is open to travel and migration without the threat of being eaten.
All rational ghosts try to avoid the territory of hunters. If you can’t defend yourself, there’s too much risk of being a free meal. It’s much safer to settle down with spirits with similar energy levels at door clusters. If the hunter does not purposefully show up at your lair, you will have a much better chance of keeping the afterlife.
Those of the Ancients who have won their position and those of them who were created for it have become accustomed to isolation. Although all the Ancients have lost the need to eat 'cause they have absorbed enough energy, legends about their past are still be nightmares for all spirits. Just because they don’t need to eat other ones doesn’t mean they won’t. It is clear that a weaker hunter can also be hunted. No reason to risk.
Therefore, how freely and fearlessly Phantom communicates with Frostbite, Clockwork or Pandora is puzzling. Does he feel threatened at all? The Ancients find this experience refreshing. Lil communication without fear makes them feel sympathy for this youngling. Danny is always glad of their company. And the boy is not afraid to express his opinion. It is strange but...pleasant?
Their minions from time to time complain that they teach a potential enemy but it is very difficult to see a possible rival in Phantom. Danny is always in trouble. The youngster is silly and careless. Like a wet kitten that can’t even make a threatening hiss. So Ancients, to their own surprise, don't mind helping him. Why isn’t his naivety annoying?
For example, Frostbite’s trying to teach Danny hunting and tracking techniques because he thinks the little cub doesn’t know how to be what he supposed to be. Meanwhile Danny sees his attempts as a course of self-defense that he can use against ghosts who try to infiltrate his city.
~~~~~Bonus~~~~~
Some insufficiently powerful ghosts mimic predators to scare away dangerous spirits and protect themselves. Skulker is quite pleased that he managed to deceive halfa:

Tightrope- George Weasley x Reader (REPOST)
Posted  OCTOBER 20, 2020
Reposted APRIL 16, 2023
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Warnings- it gets pretty angsty, but it ends up good :)
Song- 'Tightrope' from The Greatest Showman
Italicized= Flashbacks       Italicized, bold= Song Lyrics
Enjoy!😁😁😁
——————————————————————————
You looked up at the clock, it was 7:30 pm. “George promised to be here 30 minutes ago,” you sighed sadly. He’s been doing this for the past few months. He promises that he’ll be home and then doesn’t come home until much much later. He and Fred have been really busy with the shop lately, and you understand that it’s their dream, but sometimes you want to see the love of your life, you know?
You sat up and looked at the dinner you had prepared for you two, and you looked down at your dress that you decided to wear for him. You groaned and sat down at the table, eating your meal by yourself.
“I’ll be home by seven love!” you mimicked Georges’s voice, “Bullshit, it’s all bullshit!”. You stabbed your fork down and kept eating.
After you finished, you sat your dishes down in the sink and turned on some music. “I might as well dance, even though I have no one to dance with. But, I’m used to it at this point,” you whispered to yourself.
“Tightrope” from The Greatest Showman started playing. “This explains my life right now,” you chuckled sadly then started singing, “Some people long for a life that is simple and planned. Tied with a ribbon. Some people won’t sail the sea ‘cause they’re safer on land. To follow what’s written. But I’d follow you to the great unknown. Off to a world we call our own,”.
You thought back to when you and George were talking about your future during dinner one day at Hogwarts. When you mentioned getting a job at the ministry he said that that was boring and no fun.
“What do you mean that’s "boring and no fun”?“ you asked. "I want a job where I can have fun, sure, it might not pay well. But it’s a lot better than getting an office job where you’re bored out of your mind. And besides, it’s fun to have a little risk!” George exclaimed, “What’s the fun in having a life that’s planned? It’s so much more fun to not know what’ll happen tomorrow! It’s fun when there’s some unknown to your life, it makes it exciting!”. “Well, I guess wherever you end up, I’ll end up,” you sighed dreamily and leaned toward him. “We’ll make the world our own,” he whispered and kissed you.
Your heart fluttered at the memory.
“Hand in my hand. And we promised to never let go. We’re walking a tightrope. High in the sky. We can see the whole world down below. We’re walking a tightrope. Never sure, never know how far we could fall. But it’s all an adventure, that comes with a breathtaking view. Walking a tightrope. With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. With you,” you sang.
You tried to be optimistic about all of the time George has to spend at the shop because you know that one day it’ll all be worth it. But, it really doesn’t seem like it because it’s been months of this and it doesn’t seem to be getting better. At some point, the shop could completely crash and you two would be screwed. But on the other hand, it could work out amazingly and you two could be set for the rest of your life. You never know, you guess.
“Mountains and valleys, and all that will come in between. Desert and ocean. You pulled me in and together we’re lost in a dream. Always in motion. So I risk it all just to be with you. And I risk it all for this life we choose,” you sang and remembered to when Fred and George were trying to convince you to leave school with them. Mainly because George couldn’t imagine not being with you for the rest of the year.
“Come on, Y/n! Umbridge is the worst and we could get out of this hell-hole, away from her and her horrible ways,” Fred tried convincing you at dinner. “Please, Y/n, we’ll live out our dream of making the world our own! No more school, just you and I,” George said and grabbed your hands, “Along with me!” Fred butted in which made the three of you laugh. George gave you pleading eyes, “How can I say no to you? Fine! I’ll do it,” you agreed which made George ecstatic.
A few weeks later, you left with the boys making their grand exit and you flipping off Umbridge before flying away with George. And with that, you didn’t finish school. Meaning, that you couldn’t get a good job. You were dependent on your job at a small bookshop and the joke shop.
“Hand in my hand. And you promised to never let go. We’re walking a tightrope. High in the sky, we can see the whole world down below. We’re walking a tightrope.Never sure, will you catch me if I should fall?”.
At this point, you felt alone. Even though George came home every night, you were asleep and when you awoke, he was gone.
“I promise that no matter what happens with this shop, I’ll always be there for you,” George said as you two were walking down Diagon Alley. “Promise?” you asked, “Promise,” George reassured. As you started walking away, you felt that George wasn’t walking with you. You turned around to see him on one knee, “Y/n Y/m/n Y/l/n, you make me the happiest chap alive. I know that that’s cliché, but it’s true. You’ve supported me in my dreams and I promise to do the same, for the rest of our lives. Which I guess brings me to the big question. Will you marry me?”. You stood there with tears in your eyes before jumping up and down and screaming, “Yes! Yes! A million, bajillion times yes!”. He slipped the ring on your finger before you both shared a passionate kiss.
You looked down at the engagement ring on your finger, “Well, it’s all an adventure. That comes with a breathtaking view. Walking a tightrope. With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh,”. You then thought back to the Yule Ball.
“With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. With you,” you sang while spinning around acting like you were dancing with George.
He had asked you to go with him the moment you heard of it happening. You wore a gorgeous gown and you looked perfect, just like how your night went. You and George danced the night away and nothing else mattered except the two of you being together.
The music in your kitchen had engulfed you and you felt like you were in the great hall dancing the night away, just like that night. “With you, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh,”. The music then stopped, bringing you back to your current reality. Your dress immediately stopped flowing and you looked out of the kitchen window. You were at home, with no George insight.
“With you, ooh-ooh-ooh. With you,” you sang while walking toward the counter so that you could lean on it since you were now tearing up at your current situation. “Oh Georgie, what happened to us?” you whispered to yourself and leaned over, sobbing, “We used to be madly in love, and now we’re not. I just want it to go back to the way it used to be,”.
You turned around and wiped a few tears before seeing George standing right on the opposite end of the kitchen. “Oh, hi love!” you exclaimed and wiped away your tears. He didn’t say anything back, he was just standing there sadly.
“How much did you hear?” you croaked out, starting to cry again. “I heard that we’re not as in love as we used to be and that you want things to go back to the way they were,” George said quietly.
You couldn’t keep it in anymore. You let out a sob and walked over to George, falling in his arms. “I just- I just, I miss you all the time. You’re never home and- and I feel like we’re falling out of love for each other,” you sobbed, “I mean, this is the first time we’ve touched in weeks,”. “Don’t say that love,” George cooed.
“But it’s true,” you sobbed, “we’ve been engaged for a year now and we haven’t even been able to plan the wedding because you’re always at work. I feel like you don’t care about me or this relationship anymore,”.
George didn’t say anything, he just looked down. “Do you not care about me anymore?” you said angrily and pulled out of his embrace. His head shot up and he started rapidly shaking his head 'no’. “No-no, I care about you a-a lot,” he sobbed.
You shook your head, not believing him at all. “I-I really d-do!” George cried out and reached out his arms to grab you, but you backed up. He watched helplessly as you walked past him and to the couch so that you could sit down. “I don’t know if I can believe you anymore, George,” you spat his name out like venom.
His heart broke when you called him by his name, you never do that. You always called him 'love’ or 'sweetie’, really anything except his name. “But you can! When have I ever lied to you?” George asked and ran next to you on the sofa, dropping to his knees in front of you. “When you said that the shop wouldn’t stop you from being there for me!” you sobbed.
He looked like he was about to say something, but he couldn’t say anything. You scoffed and stood up, walking to your shared room, and slamming the door. “Wait, Y/n! Wait! Please!” George pleaded and banged on the door.
You just sobbed and slid down the door. He was on the other side leaning his head against the door, banging it occasionally, and sobbing. He felt horrible and so did you. But, you couldn’t do it anymore; waiting for him every day, not knowing when he’ll get home, or eating dinner by yourself every night.
You. just. couldn’t. anymore.
You stood up from the door, which George heard. You grabbed a bag and walked over to your dresser to pack some clothes. You weren’t going to leave him entirely, but he needed to get it through his head that you didn’t deserve to be treated this way.
“Y/n!” George sobbed, “Open the door, sweetheart!”. You just wiped away your tears and kept putting clothes in your bag. “Please!” George sobbed and banged the door. You breathed out and walked over to the door, opening it. He slightly smiled when he saw you but it immediately dropped when he saw the bag in your hands.
“Y/n, what are you doing?” he asked. “Leaving,” you simply stated and pushed past him, “not for a long time, but enough time for you to figure yourself out,”. “But you don’t need to go away! I love you, isn’t that enough?” George asked, you just jerked your head around to look at him.
George breathed out, “I know that I’ve been at the shop a lot and I know that we haven’t planned the wedding at all. I just-”, “'You just’ what?! You just have a lot of work to do which makes you just forget all about your fiance?! The love of your life?!” you screamed.
“But I haven’t forgotten about you! Look, I know I screwed up, but pleas-please don’t leave. We’ll figure it out together, we always do!” George sobbed. “We haven’t been doing a lot together lately. It seems to just be you with me trailing behind,” you spat.
“I didn’t know you felt that way and-and I’m sorry. But, I’m begging you, please don’t go. You’re the one thing that’s been keeping me going these past few months,” George pleaded, “when I come home and you’re asleep, I love to hold you close when I get into bed. It’s calming and makes me forget all about the stress of running the shop. On my breaks, I always look at the picture of us at the Yule ball that’s on my desk. I have the little friendship bracelet you made for me when we were first years in my pocket with me at all times,”. He pulled a tiny bracelet out of his pocket, and sure enough, it was the charm bracelet that you gave to him all those years ago.
“You’re the one thing that’s kept me from losing it, so please don’t go. I’ll fix it- we’ll fix it- together,” George said and walked slowly up to you.
You stood there for a second, taking everything that he said in. It was the same for you too. Even though you never saw him anymore, he was the one thing that was keeping you from leaving him completely.
No matter what happened between the two of you, no matter how bad it was, your love for each other always shined through and brought you two to your senses about the fact that you both loved each other and there was nothing that could change that.
You dropped your bag and ran to him to hug him, nearly knocking him over. “Oh, love. You don’t understand how much I love you,” he whispered and kissed your temple. “I love you too,” you said, “Really?” he asked. “How could I not?” you giggled.
He smiled so big that it made your heart swell with happiness. You two quickly locked lips and stayed there until you both were out of breath. “I love you so so so much, and I’ll never let you feel that bad again,” George breathed out, “I love too, ginger,” you giggled, making him smile even bigger if that’s even possible. You two then shared another passionate kiss.
You two really were walking a tightrope. At any moment everything could come crashing down, but then again, life with George was exciting and unexpected. As long as you two kept your balance and kept loving each other, you would keep walking along that tightrope effortlessly and your life would be magnificent.
Racism, Sleep, T*mmy, and the 9-1-1 Writers’ Room
Or why I hate how the 9-1-1 writers wrote Hen and T*mmy
TW: discussion of racial abuse in the workplace, particularly firefighting and the military, and PTSD from racial trauma
No because no one in the 9-1-1 writer’s room has actually faced the sort of racism that they put Hen and Chimney through in their Begins episodes and it shows.
So, fun fact about me, when I first watched 9-1-1 in May 2023, I skipped Hen and Chimney begins because that sort of racism in the workforce is so absolutely triggering for me that I didn’t want to watch them. I looked up the summary on Google, had my fears about the racism, misogyny, and homophobia confirmed and didn’t watch them. Eventually, with the emotional support of a friend of mine and the physical presence/support of my sister, I gritted my teeth through both episodes and HOLY FUCK!
I don’t doubt there are people in the 9-1-1 writer’s room who have experienced racism and other forms of prejudice. I don’t doubt that there are people in that team with lived experience in people causing them serious harm and racial abuse in the workplace.
I’m strongly doubt there is someone in the writer’s room that has been put in Chimney and Hen’s scenario but especially Hen’s.
I cannot stress enough how much horrific and terrifying racial abuse in the workplace becomes when you have to sleep next to the people racially abusing you.
Yes, we have police officers that come forward to talk about their abusive treatment. Yes, there’s EMS and people at Fortune 500 companies and doctors and lawyers and writers who experience racial abuse. But most of them did not have to sleep next to the people perpetuating their racial harm every shift. None of them have had to eat meals prepared by them every time they go to work. None of them have to trust the people racially abusing them with saving their lives in a situation where they could just as easily say it was “impossible” to save them (yes police sometimes but not at the frequency of firefighters). Most people in situations where they are being racially abused do not have to worry their colleagues will leave them to die.
There is a reason why firefighters are the least diverse racially and gender wise out of police, EMS, and the military, and it’s because of the elements where there is so much more proximity for serious, serious harm that makes joining up terrifying. Theres a reason most fire departments cluster marginalized group of people because it’s a safety issue. It’s an issue that marginalized folks in this situation are safer in groups than alone. Because the prejudice is unlike most workplace racial harm.
The best comparison I can give to being racially abused as a firefighter is when folks in the military experience racial abuse in boot camp/basic training. My dad experienced it in 1995 and in 2020, when he drove with my sister to her new house and they passed by the city he went to basic training in, my sister watched his head seem to take flight from his body as he talked about the racism and the fear. Twenty five years and four combat tours in the “war on terror”, and even being in the same city as the one he faced racist abuse in brought his body and brain to a screeching halt. Basic training was one of the most traumatizing things he’d been through in the military, because of racist leadership, because of racist fellow recruits, because of the people that did nothing because they weren’t allowed to. Because he had to sleep there, sleep amongst people that he was terrified of.
But back to firefighters, that fear is real and visceral. When you are forced to sleep next to the people that hate you, that wish you harm and pain. You have to sleep next to them when you know that if they hurt you, unless it’s serious, they won’t face consequences.
Go look up Raheem Hassan, the Muslim firefighter who sued the fire department of NYC and what his colleagues did to him while he slept and how the department responded to it.
I know everyone says that “there’s a reason no one’s says F the firefighters!” And that reason is because firefighters tend to turn all their racist harm on their colleagues. And when it’s bad, it’s bad.
There is a reason why most firefighters who complain about discrimination in their department have already transferred or end up transferring. When firefighters finally get to the point where they complain to the department or the city about their workplace, it’s not because it’s gotten mean or cruel or hostile, it’s because it’s gotten unsafe.
Because mean/cruel/hostile is the rule not the exception.
So watching Chimney and Hen Begins where they both, but Hen especially, experience the racism that makes their workplace unsafe, that should make them afraid to sleep, to bring their lunches from home, lock them in their lockers, and not let them out of their sight (because guess what? Firefighters have poisoned colleagues in these situations), makes them question their own personhood, and them seeming not to have lasting consequences from it? As though racial trauma of that magnitude wouldn’t cause PTSD and hypervigilance? As thought it wouldn’t cause skepticism of new firefighters and distance from every firefighter that did nothing but sit there as it happened for months?? Especially for Hen??? (Because anti-Blackness and especially misogynoir present themselves so differently in terrifying ways from other forms of prejudice.)
9-1-1 loves writing their actions without consequences or not thinking through the consequences.
The writers could sell me on Chimney forgiving Tommy, mostly because Chimney’s early experience was different. But Hen? Not only forgiving him and working alongside him? But inviting Tommy into her personal social life? Nope. No way. For nothing else than for the fact that I don’t know a single Black woman that is going to invite someone with that level of questionable safety into their personal life. There is no one, not a single person, that both perpetuated racial harm and sat there without saying a word while I was racially abused, that I’m inviting into my life for funsies. It is also out of character for who they portray Hen as, which makes it more confusing.
Even if Hen trusted him as a colleague, it is absurd to me that the writers think this would translate to Hen welcoming Tommy into her life outside of work or even being friendly outside of the settings where she’s required to. It doesn’t matter if he’s changed. Not only has he not actually demonstrated that change on screen (sorry y’all but yt gays can be horribly racist too.) We don’t get an on screen acknowledgment or apology.
And again, when you’ve experienced that level of racism in an environment where these people could seriously harm you or unalive you and likely face zero consequences, there’s no way you’re risking inviting someone that both sat there while it happened and participated in it into your personal lives. And holy fuck if your friend started dating them knowing what they did, you’d be having words.
The experiences you have when you’re experiencing racial abuse from people you have to sleep next to and eat meals with will imbed themselves in your psyche for years to come. Your heart will race try to fall asleep at work for decades afterward. You will question every meal prepared by a colleague, even when you trust them. You will regard new colleagues with suspicion. You will take naps in common areas. You sleep will rearrange itself to awaken you at the slightest sound and not because you need to be up for calls. It will take years to lose that hypervigilance, years that will not be undone in just a moment, when the big bad is fired, when the old guard leaves for new positions. In 24 years, when your kid asks you what that experience was like, your brain will disappear and your body will go respond m. You will still remember the faces and names of the ones who stayed silent (or took months to come forward) just as well as the perpetrators.
And you certainly would never consider inviting them to dinner.
TIMING:  June 3, 2023 LOCATION:  The Pines PARTIES: Anita @gossipsnake & Alan @alan-duarte SUMMARY: Anita makes her way home from a night out and comes across a sweet Vegetable Lamb, over which she becomes quite protective when Alan tries to make a meal out of it. CONTENT WARNINGS: N/A
As her nights often ended, Anita found herself walking home to her secluded mansion on the edge of The Pines and Seven Peaks late in the evening - or was it very early in the morning? - after being out at one of her favorite local bars until closing. Well, this wasn’t how her nights often ended, given that she was walking home alone and not with someone she had picked up at the bar. She didn’t mind the solitude every now and then, though. Especially at this time of year when the spring was thawing nature out of its prolonged winter freeze.
Unsurprisingly given her chosen profession and academic pursuits, being surrounded by nature put Anita at ease. While the mountainous and often cold landscape of New England varied immensely from the deserts she was raised in, the area was slowly beginning to feel like home. Especially given the amount of supernatural people, places, and things that were always about. That’s why when she heard the smallest bleat of what sounded like a lamb, she decided to investigate with reasonable caution.
As she rounded a grouping of trees, Anita saw something she had only read about before - a vegetable lamb. In her rather intoxicated state, however, she wasn’t sure if she fully believed her eyes. So she got closer, so entranced that she hardly even noticed the sound of footsteps nearby.
Alan usually wandered further into the woods on those nights. It was safer for him. It was safer for everyone. The taste of copper was one he’d gotten used to over the years,and he had stopped blaming himself for the damage he caused. Most of the time, he supposed it must have been animals. Deers, moose, maybe a boar, a hare… And if people were going to go camp in the woods on a full moon… Well, some people were better at surviving than others and that was all there was to think about here. If only he had been able to think at all tonight.
The damn full moon. A bloodthirst that simply couldn’t be quenched, and one that he struggled, every month to contain anyway.
The frail bleating of a lamb had lured the wolf out of the woods, to the edge of the forest. Near the ground, the hunter advanced, huddled on his velvet paws, his gray coat blending in with the dim light of daybreak.
But while a thin and tall silhouette approached its prey with an unsteady step, the wolf, rather than changing its target, got it into his head that the latter wanted to steal his meal. His chops curled, Alan groaned in annoyance, huffing through his nostrils as he walked around the lamb and the one in his path, making the fallen leaves rustle and crackle with each step he took.
Almost instinctively as Anita saw the impeccably large wolf rush across the space in front of her she looked up into the sky. Of course it was a full moon. Without giving it much thought, she rolled her eyes in light annoyance. Sure, part of her pitied werewolves for the fact that they were so controlled by the lunar phase. But mostly she thought it was another bit of proof of Lamia superiority.
It appeared from the wolf’s movements that he didn’t want Anita getting to the lamb but it took her a few moments to figure out the likely reason why. “You’re gonna eat that poor little guy, aren’t you? I mean… come on dude. Look at it!” She gestured enthusiastically at the tiny creature behind him. “Like, go find a stupid human to eat or something. Doesn’t that sound more appetizing?”
The lamb bleat again. Alan's claws curled against the damp floor, leaves and dirt crumpling under the wolf's massive paws. A low growl, guttural, coming from deep within replied to the poor vegetable lamb. That woman really was going to stop a wolf from eating the proverbial lamb? Even as a human, he loved a damn lamb chop, Easter’s roasted lamb leg, which his mother prepared better than anyone else.
If she wasn’t going to move, he was going to make her. With a bark, a short yelp, Alan took another step forward. It’s just a fucking lamb, move. He wouldn’t have dreamed of slaughtering such an innocent little thing as a human, but as a wolf, Alan didn’t feel so disgusted about ripping a man’s head off or feasting off of his organs. Funny how that worked. Hairs raised on his back, the werewolf growled again, baring his teeth in final warning. Yeah, if she wasn’t gonna move, he was going to go ahead and eat them both.
Clearly logic and reason were not going to get her anywhere with the dense wolf. While she never minded resorting to violence Anita did prefer to use her intellect over brute strength. Not that she lacked in either category, though. “Okay, okay, big guy… give me a second here.” Gently, Anita tossed her purse off to the side of her and then began to take off her faux leather jacket. “I mean, we’re in a forest. You have plenty of other snacks about.”
After discarding the jacket in the general direction of her purse, Anita shook her shoulders out in an over-the-top dramatic fashion. “Last chance to walk away,” though she didn’t give much of a chance admittedly and immediately began to shift into her lamia form. The rough green, brown, and yellow scales of the mojave danced along her body and within seconds she was towering over the wolf. “Back off, furball,” she hissed.
Eyes trained on the woman, Alan’s head tilted to the side as she tossed her bag, and then her jacket to the side. That was dramatic. He’d have liked her a lot in different circumstances. Of course, he didn’t really understand why she was doing all this. Getting naked in the forest was the sort of activity you expected from nudists and shifters. Nudists didn’t particularly strike him as the type to chill in front of an angry werewolf.
A tawny owl’s shriek distracted him for just a split second, long enough for him to miss part of her transformation into a gigantic beast. Alan only had himself to blame as he realized a bit too late that a normal fucking woman would have ran away in the sight of him even one who had had, like her, one too many drinks at the bar. Fuck. Even standing on his hind legs, the wolf only reached the snake’s height now. In her back, the lamb’s bleating had resumed, and angry eyes remained set on their objective.
And yet, in the far distance, by the horizon, fate was pushing forward in favor of the innocent bleating plant. It would be minutes only before the moon released the hold it had on the realtor, one long minute, during which the lamb’s fate would remain uncertain, during which his hunger would listen to no other logic than the law of nature.
Being in her true lamia form always made Anita feel more powerful and centered. The restrictions on her human senses stripped away and the world opened up before her - she could see the hot and cold patches of the world and with a quick flip of her tongue she was inundated with a melody of scents. It was soiled only by the wet dog smell before her.
Anita avoided fighting with her fellow shifters when she could - and she had no intention to cause any real harm to the wolf - but she didn’t mind some friendly combat when it presented itself. She was not bound by any natural cycle in her transformations and admittedly was never quite sure how deep into the morning wolves maintained their power. None of that mattered to her, however.
Pushing forward slightly and closing the distance between them,  her focus remained locked on the lycan. The lamb was behind her and unless her foe could get past her scales and fangs, it would surely remain unharmed that evening. Maybe Anita would have paid closer attention to her surroundings if not for the drinks that were still coursing through her cold bloodstream. She seemingly forgot that in a town like Wicked’s Rest, danger always lurked in every inch of the forest.
Baring his teeth again as she darted toward him, Alan stepped back from the nightmarish creature, and as wolves did, threw his head back and howled to the moon. Some wolves far in the distance, some undoubtedly closer to them joined his plea. Guided by seemingly feral instincts, the werewolf growled low, barking, yet keeping his distance. He had seen those fangs, and he could only imagine what they’d do to him, but he had one objective and he was willing to take a shot at it.
The more the sun approached the horizon, the more he’d be able to regain a sense of consciousness but for now the wolf’s padded paws carried him quietly around the mismatched pair, leaving a trail of pheromones that could have betrayed his current mood. He was upset. He should have sensed that she wasn’t human. Was the idea of a meal so important to his stomach that it completely disconnected his brain? He was upset, frustrated, but not willing to let go of what he wanted without putting up a fight. Eyes shifting between her and the lamb, the wolf first darted to her left, before going back on all fours to try a new approach on her right, sprinting through the fallen leaves.
The cry of the wolves echoed loudly in Anita’s head. Typically a pack creature, she wondered if those who cried out in response to him would come join in his potential skirmish. It was sort of funny, seeing the wolf preparing to attack. Was he aware of how quickly Anita could end this if she wanted to? Did he have any idea how potent the venom within her was? Probably not. Nor would he find out, not anytime soon anyway. In the hierarchy of life, the wolf did sit above the vegetable lamb. Both of which were above humans, and all of which were below lamia. That meant that if she had to pick between letting the lamb die and killing the wolf, the sacrifice was clear.
As she worked to anticipate how the attack would come Anita let her tail do its thing and emit a gentle rattle, gradually getting louder. It served as one final warning. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t head the warning. Initially, following his own movement, the snake moved to her left prepared to address the anticipated attack. She was less prepared for an attack from the right, but not unprepared. Her tail was ready to thwart off the attack, whipping around and making contact with the side of her opponent.
The wolf might have been mighty in the forest, the gigantic snake, though it didn’t seem to fit right in the septentrional woods, must have been royalty in another ecosystem. Alan’s flank was brutally hit by her tail. He knew already that he would bruise there, bruises that would certainly cause wincing and grimacing in the days to come. Still, he didn’t like to stoop down, accept defeat or back down. When he had something in mind, Alan didn’t stop until he had it.
The wolf might have yelped in pain seconds before, it was back on its front legs now, examining the snake’s movements. She moved faster than he had anticipated, and those fangs looked like they could tear right through him as if he were made of butter but he was confident he could move faster yet. He had legs. Clearly that must have given him an advantage, right?
The rattling of her tail could become an advantage if he paid more attention to it. He just had to dart to the right again, remain quick on his feet, keep on moving and then leap claws out, toward the bleating small thing, to drag it into the depths of the woods with him. A growl carried through his first steps toward the scaly creature, dying out as he picked up speed and executed his plan.
There was some twisted joy that rushed through Anita when she heard the wolf cry out, even if the pain she inflicted didn’t seem to slow him down at all. It had been a little while since she had been in an all-out brawl like this before and her adrenaline was spiking. That plus the alcohol coursing through her prevented the cold breeze of the nighttime from bothering her.
Working as strategically as she could muster, Anita tried to fend off the hairy beast. While her size compared to the wolf was certainly an asset it also made her a bigger target. Normally she would make herself a smaller target by looping her tail around herself and above her head, but it wasn’t just her own wellbeing she was selflessly defending - she had to keep the lamb safe. It was that thought that made her realize that something in the air had shifted, a new smell wafting her way and a small but present heat signature from her peripheral. Distracted, her guard was down for just long enough to allow the wolf to land a swift attack. Her tail rattled louder and faster, as she felt her focus being torn between the known threat in front of her and the concern over what was approaching their battle ground. She wasn’t willing, however, to take her eyes off of the wolf. She wasn’t willing to lose a fight to a wolf. Even if that meant losing the lamb.
Todd was an idiot. Chad had just proven it.
This was the perfect addition to the hazing process but no. Todd insisted that it was too dangerous to send freshmen in the woods on a full moon. And yet, Chad had just spent one complete night in here, and was now walking out without even a scratch. Aside from a couple of owls, deers, one moose and the distant howl of wolves, far, far inside The Pines, he hadn’t really seen much action tonight. The sun was rising now, and he was about to walk back to the frat house triumphant, with evidence of his prowess. Chad : 1 Spineless Todd : 0
“Fucking moron,” with a scoff, the business student reached in his pocket for cigarettes.
The wolves howled again. Were they getting closer? That was close, right? Heh, if he took a picture of one, he’d surely show this moron just how much of a cheeto-dick asshole he was.
Quietly, he approached the sound, getting his phone out of his pocket, his cigarette hanging precariously from his lips. This would be a triumph.
Alan was quick on his feet, but the snake was neither backing down nor showing any signs of tiredness. God fucking damnit. He had to try a different approach. The cold blooded animal really wasn’t his first choice when it came to getting a nice snack and he had his eyes set on that lamb. Sure it was a bit small but the snake was way too big and again, he didn't like the taste of these.
He tried again, from the right, the left, running low, baring his teeth, but nothing seemed to get past her radar, until…
Alan might have had less control of himself on full moons, he had enough to keep himself alive. When the largest predator paused to look at the bushes, you didn't keep on attacking.
Standing on his hind legs, the werewolf's neck craned, hoping to catch a glimpse of their company. Perhaps it was another wolf, who smelled of Takis, blue Gatorade, cigarette smoke and dirt cheap aftershave. Alright, no wolf would have accepted carrying that scent around.
No… that scent could only come from a goddamn human.
As the human approached, because it practically had to be a human with that heat signature and stench, Anita’s presumption was that it was a hunter. Had their fight gotten so loud that it really drew that much attention or had they just been so unlucky that a hunter was passing through at the exact wrong time? There was too much to focus on - the wolf, the lamb, the man. Despite her desire to both beat the wolf and keep the lamb out of harm's way, Anita knew that self preservation needed to be her priority. It didn’t much matter what else happened that night, the snake just needed to make it back home in one piece.
Maybe the human could be a common enemy and the two of them could stop fighting each other for a moment and take care of this interloper first. Her eyes scanned the wolf’s face trying to determine if he was having a similar thought. Anita shot her tail into the general direction of the presumed hunter. They were too far away for it to hit but her intention was simply to signal to the wolf that they weren’t alone.
“On my signal?” Anita asked quietly, hoping the wolf understood. Without letting him out of her line of sight she began to slowly slither backwards closer towards the approaching person. The plan was to set herself up to make a quick attack against the human before returning to the wolf in the event that he wasn’t interested in taking care of the threat together. Though if it was a hunter there was a chance that Anita’s venom would do nothing more than irritate the man. She’d much rather attack together.
Ears pulled back, the wolf’s eyes fixated on the intruder. He had seen his fair share of hunters in the past, none of them foolish enough to let the entire forest know they were there through scent alone. One of the defining traits of a good hunter, Alan found, was their ability to make themselves invisible through any mean available. They were remarkably quiet, they often left not a single track behind them, they tried to remain unseen and they did their best not to get spotted with their odor.
The werewolf narrowed his eyes, lowering himself onto four legs as he examined the man standing before them. He seemed speechless, which wasn’t necessarily a synonym for quiet.
The snake’s tail hit the ground, lifting dried leaves into the air. Alan looked at her, and something akin to a whimper came as a reply to her question. The human didn’t seem frightened at all. Phone in front of him, as if it were a shield, he seemed blissfully unaware of what awaited him.
While she took care of the front side of that foolish man, the wolf darted out of the clearing, leaving the bleating lamb there. The sun was starting to break through the leaves, coloring the scenery with hues of pale gold, but though the harness of the moon had now been removed from the wolf, he moved to the side, ready to block any attempt the young man would make at running for his life.
Anita was never sure if the pure ignorance to present and apparent danger was a learned human deficiency or if it was simply further proof of Darwin’s theories of survival of the fittest. Because, after all, humans were certainly not the fittest creatures and this man was not the fittest in the forest that evening. Expectedly, that meant his chances of surviving the night were not great.
In sync with her former opponent, Anita began to circle around the opposite direction away from the lamb and around towards their joint prey. She was not sure what the wolf’s plan of action was but it was her intention to not give this man any opportunity to escape his pending fate. Allowing herself to get down low to the ground, her body moved swiftly along the forest as she allowed the gentle shadows created by the moonlight hitting the trees above to conceal a fair amount of her movements. As she closed the gap between herself and this human, who was so clearly at this point not a hunter, Anita prepared her attack.
Not bothering with her usual methodology of injecting a potent dose of her natural toxin into her victim’s blood stream, Anita quickly lifted her torso up from the ground so that she was suddenly towering over the human. Then, in one swift movement, she opened her mouth as wide as it could and came down upon the man and clamped her fangs down around his lower waist, as she spotted the wolf with his teeth already clamped down on the man’s lower half. She hoped this meal would satisfy his craving and that he would not turn his attention back to the lamb once this feast was completed.
If he had been fully in control of his psyche, Alan would have been absolutely terrified right then. The snake blended in well in this environment, and the morning sun did a number on his perception of her movements. If he could have been mesmerized by it, what came next was horrifying.
No matter how much shit he had been exposed to through these last years, nothing prepared you to see a man getting nearly swallowed whole by a gigantic snake. But his werewolf had taken over, and Alan could only decide on what leg he would sink his teeth in, on where he would drag his half of the man to, but certainly not on whether he wanted to do that. No. Tonight, he once again had not been in control of the what. Only of the how.
Undisturbed by the shattering of bones, the spilling viscera, the wolf growled low as he raised onto his back limbs, the intruder's ankle in his jaw and the rest of his legs dangling to the side. Blood stained his grey coat of fur as he confronted the snake one last time. His gaze was drawn to the lamb again, but the taste of blood on his tongue seemed more enticing than that little tender thing there.
His prize secure, he retreated out of the clearing, leaving the snake behind him.
So engrossed in her meal, which had quite a strange aftertaste that she didn’t quite enjoy, Anita had almost missed the fact that the wolf retreated out of the area and into the shadows and anonymity of the woods surrounding them. She looked back towards where the lamb had been and felt content in knowing that it would survive another day. Would it survive longer than that? Well, that wasn’t her concern anymore.
Her attention darted between her jacket and purse that she had discarded near the lamb and the treeline where the wolf had disappeared into. Glancing up, she noted that the moon was nearly gone as the dawn had nearly replaced the dusk. Anita wondered how immediate the reverse transformation happened once the lunar influence disappeared.
Swiftly, to try and catch up to the other shifter quickly, Anita darted towards the woods. Each second that passed was filled with less moon light. As she moved expertly around the trees she suddenly heard a telling noise, the familiar sound of bones crushing. Slowing herself down and zeroing in on the wolf’s heat signature, Anita caught the tail end of his transformation back into human. The man was scruffy and completely naked … and familiar? Yes, she knew that face somehow but she couldn’t place it. Interesting. Had he recognized her too? That would have to be a question answered another day, and Anita quickly darted back out of the woods to collect her discarded purse and jacket before finally making her way home.
You were sitting in your living room in front of the fireplace, reading a book to unwind when you had the feeling that something was watching you from the shadows. You looked in the direction where you thought the thing watching you would be only to see nothing but shadows in the corners of the room. Having settled your mind, you set your book down on the coffee table and closed your eyes. Your rest didn’t last long though as you heard something woosh by you and a faint scent of black pepper filled your nostrils.
You opened your eyes and saw a shadowy figure standing in your kitchen. Your heart beat quickened and your breathing grew unsteady as you felt the blood drain from your face as you saw the very being that you thought was a ghost that had entered your home. You watched the creature settled and revealed a pair of glowing, yellow eyes that seemed to stare into your soul. You stood up and armed yourself with the book as you entered the kitchen and watched the creature’s gaze follow you as you got close to the being and attempted to whack it over the head with your book. You missed as the purplish-black fog that the creature was made from dodged your attack and it moved closer to you. Upon being only a mere few inches from this being, you were able to see that it was one of the more dangerous Nomu that had been attacking the top Pro heroes of your country. You gasped and dropped your book.
“What do you want from me? I don’t mean you any harm. Please don’t hurt me.” You pleaded. “I wish not to hurt you. I merely need your help with something.” The mysterious stranger spoke. “What is it?” You asked. “You will see.” He spoke and enveloped you in a black cloud. You screamed as all your senses were cut off  and you feel the sense of being carried to somewhere, you didn’t know where you were going because of being blinded by the fog. You felt yourself set down on something soft, thinking it was your bed. You felt the creature pull your bottoms off and something hard and wet slide up into your pussy. You desperately wanted to cry out but a tendril of black fog was covering your mouth.
You looked up into the creature’s eyes and wondered what happened to the creature, where did it come from, and why did it want you? Did it escape from some facility where it was born and it immediately came here because it had the urge to mate? You didn’t care now, as it pushed its member deeper into you, quickly cumming inside of you and waiting until you came on its cock. The creature pulled out of you and backed up into the shadows, leaving you spent and pleasure filled on your bed. You looked over at a corner of your room for some sign of the creature but there was no sight of the creature in your room. Carefully you got off your bed and wandered your house looking for him without any luck. You went back to your room and you saw a note on your nightstand. You picked it up and read what was inscribed on the paper. It read: “Thank you for this evening. My name is Kurogiri. I hope I can meet you again without such a rushed situation. There isn’t a need for a phone number as I do not have one. But I know where you live and I’ll come back once things are a bit safer for me.
See you later,
Kurogiri.” You held the note to your chest and felt a sense of warmth and happiness within you. A few weeks go by and you’re still at your cabin. You were inside enjoying a hot meal and the warmth from your fireplace as you were watching a movie from your laptop. It was storming outside and you didn’t dare go outside, fear of getting drenched and sick. You listened to the tapping noise of the rain against your sliding back door when something huge impacted with it, making you jump. You looked over a saw Kurogiri looking inside from the back porch like a lost puppy. You got up and let him inside and guided him to the fireplace where you helped him dry off and warm up from being outside for who knows how long. “What were you doing out there?” You asked once you brought back a steaming mug of hot apple cider for him. “Trying to find my way back to you. Its harder to teleport in the rain. But I’m glad I made it back.” He told you. You smiled and sat down next to him, glad that this mysterious man, creature, whoever he was, was now back and safe with you. The End.
isn't that how persons are shaped too? why should i consider her identity to be less defined than mine? why should she be less alive than i am?
i am in love with cities
and i have a feeling this one might just like me back
so are we crushing on each other, seoul? are you making sure i make it - whatever that means? did you want me back? is that why i felt so deep in my bones that i needed to be here?
i feel safer, somehow now that i know this because i don't feel it i know it look at my shadow typing this note on the phone while walking
The last of us - Broken together 1
Y/n is from England but gets trapped in America as the world ends. After living through twenty years of an apocalyptic world she finds the missing piece; her only friends daughter, travelling across the country to the fireflies. With this new pair y/n finds more than she bargained for.
Joel and reader
Slow burn
You sat on the porch of your uncle's home. It had been around two months since you had been there, you'd never thought you'd come home to this. A car rolled to a stop not far from you and a man got out. He had his hand on his side weapon. You glanced up at him, then reverted your sight back to the unkept lawn in front of you.
"Y/n?" Joel called over to you. His voice interrupted the buzzing in your ears. You looked up to him seeing the teen girl behind him.
"Joel?" You shakely stood.
"everything okay?" He asked, searching your face. You took in a staggered breath.
"the flowers are dead." You spoke absently, "I called inside but no one came out." You felt Joel tense his body from the five feet away he was standing. He moved last you, grabbing your hand as he went inside the building. He sat you down in the dining room, a layer of dust covered a half eaten meal left to rot. He told Ellie to stay put and call him if she heard anything before making his way down the hallway. The door to his friend's bedroom wouldn't open. A noise called him back to the dining room.
You had moved, standing in front of the window, Ellie sat in your place at the table a letter in her hand.
"Its from Bill." She said, your turned your head slightly at the sound of your uncle's name, she picke sup the envelope, "to whomever but probably Joel or y/n I figured I fell into the whomever. It came with this." She slid a key across the dusty table. Joel picked it up.
"so they're dead?" He asked. Kicking himself internally for not phrasing it better in front of you.
"uh-huh." Ellie acknowledged. Joel looked at you stood at the window then turned round.
"you, you wanna-?" Ellie asked.
"no you do it."
She shifts in her seats and clears her throat slightly beginning to read.
"August 29th 2023,
If you find this please do not come into the bedroom, we left the window open so the house wouldn't smell, but it will probably be a sight.
I'm guessing you found this Joel or Y/n as anyone else would have been electrocuted or blown up by one of my traps, hehehehehehe. Take anything you need, the bunker code is the same as the the gate code but in reverse,
Any way. Joel, I never liked you but it's like we're friends, almost. And I respect you. So I'm going to tell you something because you're probably the only person who'll understand. I used to hate the world and I was happy when everyone died, but I was wrong, there was one person worth saving that's what I did. I saved him. Then I protected him, that's why men like you and me are here. We have a job to do and god help any mother fucker who steps in our way. I leave you all of my weapons and equipment. Use them to keep-" she stopped reading. Joel grabbed the letter and read from it, then passed it to you. You read a small note to you at the bottom. Bill admits his love for you and how he wished you'd been safer though he was happy you'd been visiting him from England when the world ended. When you finished reading Joel was gone. Ellie stayed in her seat. You looked at her. She shrugged.
"sorry, about your uncle." She said looking at her knees. You couldn't manage words yet so you nodded. Joel came back in telling Ellie he had made a car battery but it would need time to charge. You followed them, almost blindly as they walked to the basement and down into the bunker. You started grabbing weapons off the wall, placing them in holsters and straps around your body. Ellie asked if she was allowed one, your eyes went to Joel, his call. He said no. From her expression this had been a topic of conversation a few times. You grab a load of ammo for your new guns and slide a long knife into your boot, with another going on to your belt.
Joel turned off the radio. You could hear them talking about it, but their words felt a mile away. When they finally left the bunker you followed. You sat down at the piano as they left the house. You could hear them in the garage beside the house.
At some point Ellie came rushing past her running up the stairs to the bathroom. Your eyes followed her movement.
"she's going to shower." Joel stated from the door.
"that's a good idea." You said. Joel shuffled around.
"are you gunna stay here or-" he cut himself off.
"I...I thought I'd just um..." Joel swallowed the lump in his throat. He'd always found himself extra awkward around you the circumstances only made it worse.
"you, er you could come with us, if you want to."
You look up at him.
"I gotta let the kid to my brother in Wyoming, if you wanted to..."
You nod, "sure. If you...yeah okay."
"um, I should explain first. The girl she's um she's immun. Look I know before you say it I didn't believe at first either but it's been weeks since she was bit..." You held up a hand.
"I believe you." You said. Joel wanted to ask why but Ellie bounded down the steps, a towel rubbing against her hair. You stand and move to a closet, pulling out boxes of clothes and handing them over to Joel who gave Ellie the women's clothes and her shifted through the men's. Once he had chosen an outfit Joel went up to use the last of the hot water. You grabbed three sleeping bags from the closet, along with a thick coat for Ellie and herself.
You walked out onto the front porch, letting a tear fall down your face. Your new companions voices sounded inside, Ellie joking with Joel. You'd not heard it much but over the last ten years you'd enjoyed hearing Joel's laughter when it did happen. You were always careful to hide the attraction you felt toward him, knowing he and Tess had been an item in their own way. The pair walked out and you followed them to the truck in the garage.
"do you mind if I sleep in the back? I've not..."
Ellie and Joel nodded together and slid into the front part of the cab. After taking off most of your weapons you climbed into the back part lying across the bench seat and closed your eyes.
Not waking up until Joel was pouring Syphoned gasoline into the tank. You swapped places with Ellie moving to sit beside Joel. As they drove Ellie searched through the back of the car.
"I got something she said, leaning forward over Joel's shoulder. "Here, thid make you all nostalgic?"
Joel took the cassette tape from her and looked at the cover.
"this is actually before my time, it's a winner though." He slid it into the player, turning it up slightly. Ellie returned to her search pulling out a magazine and leafing through the pages. You glanced back and saw which one I was, knowing her uncle well she knew what it was. Joel glanced back and started to panic.
"how'd he even walk around with that thing?!" Ellie bulked at the centre fold picture.
"Please get rid of it?" Joel asked.
"hold your horse I wanna see what all the fuss is about!" She laughed, "why are all these pages stuck together."
You had to put your hand over your mouth to stop your laughter. Joela eye went wide as he stumbled trying to find the right words.
"I'm just fucking with ya!" She smacked the razy magazine onto Joel's shoulder before throwing it out the window, "bye bye dudes!" She called after it. You let a small laugh fall out. Joel looked at you sideways a grin threatening his lips. He drove on. Both you and Ellie watched the American countryside go by. It had been a long time since you had taken stock of the world around you. In honesty it was beautiful. You rested your elbow on the door then your head on your hand. Your eyes slowly opening and closing. Joel noticed then looked back at Ellie who was sat back in the chair, her head resting back turned to the window. Her blank expression told Joel everything he needed to know.
"right, that's enough for today." He turned the truck off the road, across a field and into the wooded area. He parked up and got the gas burner out placing it on the ground. He rummaged through the tins, pulled out two of them and a cooking pot before crouching down at the burner. You walked around the perimeter of your camp listening to the trees and animals familiarising yourself with every inch.
Joel called you back when the food was done. The three of you each taking a side of the burner. Joel was taking his time to eat. You pushed the food around the plate, wishing you felt hungry, knowing that your body needed it. Ellie was shovelling the food into her mouth.
"slow down" Joel demanded.
"this is slow" she argued. "What am I even eating?"
"that is twenty year old chief boyardee ravioli." He answered
"that guy was good." She spoke through a mouthful
"I actually agree." Joel grumbled. You finally popped a bit into your mouth, silently agreeing with them both. They talked more whilst you are, Joel explaining his plan of sleeping that night the driving through till they arrive at Wyoming. Ellie asked if she could start a fire.
"No!" You answered too quickly and too loudly. Joel looked at you then back at his charge.
"now why am I gunna tell you no?"
She guessed infected. Joel explained it was too remote for infected. It took longer than he'd hoped for her to guess right.
"People?"
You squirmed at the words, knowing exactly what he meant.
After dinner you helped Joel clear up, cleaning the plates off a small amount of water. Ellie grabbed the sleeping bags tossing Joel's to him. You all unrolled them and started placing them on the ground. Ellie remarked on the scent of hers.
"that would be Frank's then." You and Joel said together. You zipped yours completely sitting back against the log and laying it over your legs. Holding your double barrelled shotgun in your lap.
Joel pulled his eyebrows tight, questioning you without words.
"you need to sleep to drive. I'll take the watch tonight." He sensed the finality in your words, nodded and laid back in his bed. Ellie switched off the big lamp and flicked on her torch (flashlight) pulling out her pun book.
"Joel can I ask you a serious question?"
An inflatable gastric balloon could help people lose weight
An inflatable gastric balloon could help people lose weight
Tumblr media
Gastric balloons — silicone balloons filled with air or saline and placed in the stomach — can help people lose weight by making them feel too full to overeat. However, this effect eventually can wear off as the stomach becomes used to the sensation of fullness.
To overcome that limitation, MIT engineers have designed a new type of gastric balloon that can be inflated and deflated as needed. In an animal study, they showed that inflating the balloon before a meal caused the animals to reduce their food intake by 60 percent.
This type of intervention could offer an alternative for people who don’t want to undergo more invasive treatments such as gastric bypass surgery, or people who don’t respond well to weight-loss drugs, the researchers say.
“The basic concept is we can have this balloon that is dynamic, so it would be inflated right before a meal and then you wouldn’t feel hungry. Then it would be deflated in between meals,” says Giovanni Traverso, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at MIT, a gastroenterologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the senior author of the study.
Neil Zixun Jia, who received a PhD from MIT in 2023, is the lead author of the paper, which appears today in the journal Device.
An inflatable balloon
Gastric balloons filled with saline are currently approved for use in the United States. These balloons stimulate a sense of fullness in the stomach, and studies have shown that they work well, but the benefits are often temporary.
“Gastric balloons do work initially. Historically, what has been seen is that the balloon is associated with weight loss. But then in general, the weight gain resumes the same trajectory,” Traverso says. “What we reasoned was perhaps if we had a system that simulates that fullness in a transient way, meaning right before a meal, that could be a way of inducing weight loss.”
To achieve a longer-lasting effect in patients, the researchers set out to design a device that could expand and contract on demand. They created two prototypes: One is a traditional balloon that inflates and deflates, and the other is a mechanical device with four arms that expand outward, pushing out an elastic polymer shell that presses on the stomach wall.
In animal tests, the researchers found that the mechanical-arm device could effectively expand to fill the stomach, but they ended up deciding to pursue the balloon option instead.
“Our sense was that the balloon probably distributed the force better, and down the line, if you have balloon that is applying the pressure, that is probably a safer approach in the long run,” Traverso says.
The researchers’ new balloon is similar to a traditional gastric balloon, but it is inserted into the stomach through an incision in the abdominal wall. The balloon is connected to an external controller that can be attached to the skin and contains a pump that inflates and deflates the balloon when needed. Inserting this device would be similar to the procedure used to place a feeding tube into a patient’s stomach, which is commonly done for people who are unable to eat or drink.
“If people, for example, are unable to swallow, they receive food through a tube like this. We know that we can keep tubes in for years, so there is already precedent for other systems that can stay in the body for a very long time. That gives us some confidence in the longer-term compatibility of this system,” Traverso says.
Reduced food intake
In tests in animals, the researchers found that inflating the balloon before meals led to a 60 percent reduction in the amount of food consumed. These studies were done over the course of a month, but the researchers now plan to do longer-term studies to see if this reduction leads to weight loss.
“The deployment for traditional gastric balloons is usually six months, if not more, and only then you will see good amount of weight loss. We will have to evaluate our device in a similar or longer time span to prove it really works better,” Jia says.
If developed for use in humans, the new gastric balloon could offer an alternative to existing obesity treatments. Other treatments for obesity include gastric bypass surgery, “stomach stapling” (a surgical procedure in which the stomach capacity is reduced), and drugs including GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide.
The gastric balloon could be an option for patients who are not good candidates for surgery or don’t respond well to weight-loss drugs, Traverso says.
“For certain patients who are higher-risk, who cannot undergo surgery, or did not tolerate the medication or had some other contraindication, there are limited options,” he says. “Traditional gastric balloons are still being used, but they come with a caveat that eventually the weight loss can plateau, so this is a way of trying to address that fundamental limitation.”
The research was funded by MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Karl van Tassel Career Development Professorship, the Whitaker Health Sciences Fund Fellowship, the T.S. Lin Fellowship, the MIT Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, and the Boston University Yawkey Funded Internship Program.
Hence, the increase in demand for packaged/processed food products is projected to drive the growth of the bulk food ingredients market.
Bulk Food Ingredients Market Opportunities: Rise in demand for natural or clean label products
Healthy, and ‘clean’ food products with fewer additives. Unlike organic, however, the term ‘natural’ remains undefined by legislators. Consumers are opting for cleaner products that contain an absolute minimum of synthetic or chemical additives.
According to the survey conducted by Consumer Reports National Research Center in 2013, two-thirds of the US consumers prefer locally grown products, whereas more than 60% of the population opt for ‘clean’ or ‘natural’ labeled products. As a result of the increase in demand for organic products in the North American and European region, as well as the other parts of the world, there is a significant growth in demand for bulk food ingredients products.
Clean-label products are organic, natural, non-GMO, and minimally processed consumer-friendly products. According to the Clean Label Alliance, it is witnessed that nearly 75% of consumers are willing to pay high prices for clean-label products. The increase in health awareness among consumers is projected to drive the demand for natural and clean-label products, which, in turn, would drive the demand for bulk food ingredients. Consumers are becoming inclined toward clean-label products, as they are becoming more aware of the non-synthetic ingredients and their negative effects. This is projected to encourage the adoption of products and diets with clean-label ingredients.
By application, beverage segment is projected to have fastest growing rate during the forecast period.
There is a growing global demand for a wide variety of beverages, including carbonated drinks, juices, sports drinks, ready-to-drink teas and coffees, functional beverages, and alcoholic beverages. As consumers seek convenience and new taste experiences, the beverage industry is constantly innovating to meet these demands. Consumers are increasingly conscious of their health and wellness, driving the demand for healthier beverage options. This includes beverages with natural ingredients, reduced sugar content, functional additives, and botanical extracts. Bulk food ingredients such as natural sweeteners, fruit extracts, natural Flavors, and plant-based ingredients are essential in developing healthier and more appealing beverage products.
Asia Pacific is dominating the bulk food ingredients market share.
The Asia Pacific region has a large and rapidly growing population. The rising population leads to increased food consumption and drives the demand for bulk food ingredients to meet the growing production needs. As more people enter the middle class and experience higher disposable incomes, there is an increased demand for processed and convenience foods, further boosting the need for bulk ingredients. There is a shift in dietary patterns in the region. Urbanization, changing lifestyles, and Western influences have led to a higher consumption of processed and packaged foods. This trend increases the demand for bulk food ingredients as manufacturers require large quantities of ingredients to meet the growing demand for these convenience products. The region is witnessing rising consumer awareness of health and wellness, leading to a growing demand for natural and organic food products. Bulk food ingredients such as herbs, spices, natural sweeteners, and functional additives align with this consumer preference for clean label and healthier options.
