irish mythology: sadhbh

sadhbh was cursed by a dark sorcerer of the tuatha dé danann named fer doirich. if he couldn’t have her, no-one would. he transformed her into a deer where she lived in the wilds for three years, ever evading the hunters spear. a servant of fer doirich took pity on sadhbh, and told her how to break the spell. if she were to set foot in one of the forts of the fianna, then fer doirich’s magic would no longer hold power over her. immediately she fled, bounding through glens and forests to make her way to the home of fionn mac cumhaill. she took a great risk, finding him with his hunting party. it was only thanks to fionn’s magical hounds, bran and sceolan, that she was spared.

For context:

Fionn mac Cumhaill married Sadhbh, who had been transformed into a deer by the villainous druid Fear Doirich; she regained her human form when she set foot on Fionn's land. When Fionn was away defending his country, Fear Doirich returned and turned Sadhbh back into a deer, and she vanished; Fionn never saw her again, despite all his searching. Seven years later later Fionn was out hunting and found their son, Oisín, wandering in the woods; in some versions he's first encountered in the form of a fawn, and his name literally means 'young deer'.

All of which I knew from childhood, but then there was Wikipedia:

Bran and Sceólang ("raven" and "survivor" are the hounds of Fionn mac Cumhaill in the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology. The dogs are described as being mostly white, with purple haunches, a crimson tail, blue feet, and standing as tall as Fionn's shoulder. Bran is normally male, while Sceólang is normally female, although there definitely is a version by Soinbhe Lally, where Bran is female, and Sceolang's sex is uncofirmed. Bran is also sometimes described as a merle. The hounds' mother, Uirne, was transformed into a dog while pregnant, hence the canine birth of her twin children. While Uirne is returned to full humanity after giving birth to her pups, Bran and Sceólang remain hounds throughout the duration of their mythos. As Uirne is the sister of Fionn's mother Muirne, Bran and Sceólang would be their masters' cousins.

Fionn mac Cumhaill: If I had a coin for every time a member of my family was transformed into an animal while pregnant, I'd have two coins. Fionn mac Cumhaill: Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

I’m romancing Taash and I walked in on a conversation they were having with Emmerich. Emmerich mentions how he saw a spirit of devotion observing the new couple and their happiness. I’m recommending two fics I read a few months ago but never got to share for Fandom Friday:

I Need You: (@ulchabhangorm) This a Wolffe/OFC one-shot. I love the dynamic Maia has developed between Wolffe and Sadhbh—the mutual yearning for one another, the mutual need to be with one another. This is explicit (18+ btw), but the softer, intimate moments peppered throughout are immaculate. And the angsty ending emphasizes the (seemingly) unrequited yearning of this pairing.

One Last Chance: @wings-and-beskar This is a rebels!Cody/fem!reader multi-chapter WIP. The vibes are soft and comforting, and I love how D is exploring Cody at such a late stage of his life. The relationship he has with Reader is full of mutual respect and trust and tender adoration. But the story also pursues Cody on a deeper level as he confronts his trauma and his past. (This is an 18+ fic.)

I LOOOOOVE both of these recs so much. I adore Sadhbh and how this fic is where she starts to feel something more for Wolffe. I LIVE for that "oh... oh no" moment and how much she internally struggles to determine what's the right thing to say and what's too much. And it's so SOOOOFFFFT in some moments in between her worrying and I LOVE IT. I JUST LOVE IT.

And CODY DESERVES TO HAVE A REBELS-ERA STORY, and I am SO STOKED D gave him just that. HE SHOULD GET TO REST AND HAVE ALL OF HIS COTTAGE-CORE VIBES AND WORK AN ORCHARD AND BE LOVED.

on one hand, emigration is a huge part of my country's history and culture and we have a massive diaspora and people descended from irish people who find some sense of meaning or belonging from that absolutely deserve the chance to learn of the culture from which they descend, and to connect with it. if you're descended from irish people but you're not from here, absolutely you should learn about our history, our culture, our traditions and sport and food and language and everything, and you should come visit and see all the sights and historical monuments and whatnot. There's nothing wrong with wanting to connect with that and claim it.

On the other hand, listening to irish Americans talk about ireland makes me wanna shit myself
