A ghostprice au where Price goes blind

Here’s a scene I had in my head, imagine a blackout panel, with a typewriting sound effect in the back that reads:

Patient Information: Johnathan Price, birth date, weight, height, number, address (something along those lines which are meant to hint this is a beginning of a medical record)

and then white blurry speech bubbles appearing from left and right

“What?”

You voiced out, or rather, Price voiced out (you are in Price’s POV)

All the speech bubbles seized, and for a moment it’s just darkness and much quieter whispers

“…Laswell?”

“John, you’re up, easy now”

He hears her from his left, but still there’s total darkness, and he furrows his brows, hands slowly reaching up to pat his face, or scratch it— there’s nothing on his skin, so he’s not being blindfolded, and there’s no sac or bag covering his head— but there is layers of something covering his eyes that he tries to pull off, managing to peek through a bit, he thinks he’s opening his eyes but—

Still black

“…?”

And then we cut to a shot of Ghost’s face, eyes wide with realization that Price can’t see anymore.

The last panel reads:

“Diagnosis: Traumatic Optic Neuropathy” (aka vision loss”

More rambles:

Thinking about maybe from a mission an IED went off before anyone could react— well technically Price reacted first by pulling Ghost away, which resulted in direct exposure to the blast, followed by a concussion

Ghost immediately got on his feet and dragged Price away while also making sure all units were still available, he looks down and he sees laceration and red

Well okay I haven’t figure out the clinical part but Im thinking maybe some blood pools around the corner of Price’s eyes (if, say, the laceration cut across his eyelids), it wouldn’t be as dramatic to the point where there’s blood trickling down his eyes per see cuz Idk if I plan to make the shrapnel penetrate into the cornea (in this case it would be extremely severe cause of trauma, I shall have some mercy on him)

Maybe amongst the panic he saw how Price’s left eye slowly turned red (internal bleeding) and all his alarms went off and quickly get medical on it

Of course he was praying that it wasn’t as serious, maybe it was superficial and maybe his eyes were playing tricks on him cuz it was dark and the hallway had red lamp all over

Also i just realized this is prob quite inaccurately portrayed bcuz the bandages that covers the eyes are usually tightly sealed, and that his action of ripping them off is prrrobbaaably not good since infections and increasing the pressure around his eyes are just going to make this worse (like reopening sutures or whatnot) but i think it could work (shhh ✨fiction science✨)

But nope, Price is blind, and that automatically puts him unfit for service and Ghost knows that this isn’t going to go well for the man

We always joked around saying Price is old but imagine if he’s mid 30s, prime in his years and definitely still had a lot of kick in him— only to be forcefully ripped away from it

The devastation, the angst, the anger, the unfairness of it all, the never ending cycle of guilt from both Ghost and Price

At first glance, Dave Langston’s predicament seems similar to headaches facing homeowners in coastal states vulnerable to catastrophic hurricanes: As disasters have become more frequent and severe, his insurance company has been losing money. Then, it canceled his coverage and left the state.

But Mr. Langston lives in Iowa.

Relatively consistent weather once made Iowa a good bet for insurance companies. But now, as a warming planet makes events like hail and wind storms worse, insurers are fleeing.

Mr. Langston spent months trying to find another company to insure the townhouses, on a quiet cul-de-sac at the edge of Cedar Rapids, that belong to members of his homeowners association. Without coverage, “if we were to have damage that hit all 17 units, we’re looking at bankruptcy for all of us,” he said.

The insurance turmoil caused by climate change — which had been concentrated in Florida, California and Louisiana — is fast becoming a contagion, spreading to states like Iowa, Arkansas, Ohio, Utah and Washington. Even in the Northeast, where homeowners insurance was still generally profitable last year, the trends are worsening.

In 2023, insurers lost money on homeowners coverage in 18 states, more than a third of the country, according to a New York Times analysis of newly available financial data. That’s up from 12 states five years ago, and eight states in 2013. The result is that insurance companies are raising premiums by as much as 50 percent or more, cutting back on coverage or leaving entire states altogether. Nationally, over the last decade, insurers paid out more in claims than they received in premiums, according to the ratings firm Moody’s, and those losses are increasing.

The growing tumult is affecting people whose homes have never been damaged and who have dutifully paid their premiums, year after year. Cancellation notices have left them scrambling to find coverage to protect what is often their single biggest investment. By and large, state regulators lack strategies to restore stability to the market.

Tracking the shifting insurance market is complicated by the fact it is not regulated by the federal government; attempts by the Treasury Department to simply gather data have been rebuffed by some state regulators. 

The turmoil in insurance markets is a flashing red light for an American economy that is built on real property. Without insurance, banks won’t issue a mortgage; without a mortgage, most people can’t buy a home. With fewer buyers, real estate values are likely to decline, along with property tax revenues, leaving communities with less money for schools, police and other basic services.

i told the internet about why i am where i am now in a previous post. now, i am ready to share what invaluable knowledge i've got from one of my courses so far.

during my undergrad and graduate studies, just pen and paper is mostly sufficient to create new ideas, problems, and solutions, and do research in math, but that's not the only concern i have with life and work.

for the past half a decade or so, peers and i saw a decline in the perceived quality of students in calculus at the university of the philippines los banos. what was supposed to be tackled in senior high school, like algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus especially for those from stem track, wasn't adequately done so. when introduced to fundamental calculus concepts, they do understand the notion of limit, how lines and derivatives intertwine and entangle, and why area is an integral, but when it comes to crafting solutions and answering problems, this inadequacy becomes apparent.

in turn, it becomes necessary for us to ask why this is the case? how do teachers influence their students' calculus learning and what are they doing to adapt? has existing policies done us (dis)service in the philippine (math) education? and, why is everybody and nobody at fault here?

just thinking about possible solutions is not enough. we need to get our hands dirty, wreck some established norms, and possibly hurt some feelings in the process. qualitative research, i learned, has some of the answers.

as i mentioned in a previous post,

for this course, i posed this question: how do teachers facilitate collegiate calculus learning through creative interventions?

in an attempt to answer this question, i had to look back at what is happening and what research tells us about calculus learning.

for one, most mathematics learning theories are based on existing ones from classical learning theories, like constructivism, positivism, and behaviorism. since the start of the 21st century, one of the main motivations of mathematics education research is rationalizing a theory for mathematics in consideration of its unique nature as a subject matter.

next comes becoming aware of challenges and factors in teaching and learning calculus, how do teachers intervene, and how important their role is.

as of yet, i think the question can't be answered by a simple survey, answered using a likert scale. we have to go on the ground and diligently ask calculus teachers and instructors in college the existing literature still resonate with the challenges they face and what they do about them in order to help their students. the quality of administration and prestige of the institutions they serve affect their students, but in reality, educators are at the frontline facing the students and implementing interventions as they go along day by day. their experience is a vital part of understanding the problem.

we should break down such a complex question into easily digestible and directly answerable ones that help us understand sac (structures-agency-culture): ask where the teachers come from, what kind of pool do they dive in to teach calculus, what restrictions they are put in, what the students are like, what they do to help the children [sic], and in what way do their interventions affect the students.

with the pisa results just released, now more than ever, we need to act as fast as we can to implement changes from the ground up.

why are we, everyone at school, so miserable in one way or another? this, i can definitely say, is my magnum opus.

Game concept: Game with a cybernetic player character with a save game animation where the character steps into the save room and just opens up her body and lets it all out.

Various sacs plopping out, various instruments clattering. Vaguely coloured grey muck pooling over the floor and splattering up the walls. Some visible red chunks here and there. Instruments visibly cracked. Sacs visibly ruptured and contents oozing out.

But of course, the player character can let go. Because the save room is where your health and stuff gets refilled.

So all the junk is swept away and disposed of as garbage. The walls and the floor and the player character are all hosed down. The player character is strapped to some table or other and just stuffed full of everything she needs.

You know how some games have a cute save game girl? Like Mei Ling or Rose in Metal Gear Solid? This game has a big burly guy. An engineer. He's got a porn calendar on the wall. He can be a bit much to deal with sometimes but he's a good save game guy. He doesn't have a cheeky drink on the job. He'll make the demeaning comments and pat your butt sometimes but he takes the work seriously.

So there he is just packing it all in. All the various cybernetics that your body needs. He's grabbing fistfuls of it and shoving it in there. Has to go deep. He's got an opening in your gut and he has to reach his whole arm in there. Right up to the shoulder. More than a couple times you've found yourself coughing up one or two of his moustache hairs.

Feels good too. Can't hide that. You can't have a save game guy for any length of time without him noticing you obviously like it. He likes that you like it. He never says so but you know he does. He can't hide it just the same as you can't. His body may not give him away like yours gives you away, but you know his tells. The back and forth of mock bullying between the two of you. How it ebbs and flows, how you just happen to take the lead again after each time he services you.

And it's messy work, but it certainly isn't simple. He has to pack it all tightly in your body and all the little crevices you have carved out to store various pieces of tech, but he still has to connect it all together. You spend a good little while there strapped to that table. Filled up then tinkered with. Rough then gentle. Accessing memory card. Saving game data.
