🇵🇸 From the second ESC semi-final: man waves a small Palestinian flag during Israel's performance, and is immediately escorted out by security
I've seen people try to excuse this by saying there's always been a list of approved flags for Eurovision.
And yes, while it's true that ESC has had an official flag policy for years now—with nation flags either limited to those with UN status, or to participating countries—it's also something that has only been selectively enforced in the past, and never which the kind of hostility we're seeing in Malmö right now.
The first time I remember hearing about the Eurovision flag policy was in 2016, when a Sami artist was representing Norway. The Norwegian broadcaster of ESC, NRK, reported then that the Semi flag was "technically" banned from the ESC arena, but that, according to ESC's the former head of communications, it would be up to the security at the arena whether they enforced this ban or not:
The music competition's rules state that it is only permitted to use flags from the participating countries, from countries that have previously participated, or from countries that are full members of the UN. It is therefore not allowed to wave the Sami flag when Agnete goes on stage on 14 May in Stockholm. - Technically speaking, that is correct, as the Sami flag is not part of the UN or is represented in the Eurovision Song Contest. I understand that the question can arouse emotions as Agnete has Sami roots, says Paul Jordan, communications manager for the Eurovision Song Contest to Sameradion in Sweden When asked what might happen if the public shows up with a Sami flag during the competition, the communications manager says that it will be up to the doormen to decide. - Technically, it is not allowed according to the current rules. Right now I don't know what would have happened at the entrance. Technically, it can be confiscated, but I cannot guarantee that, says Jordan to Sameradion.
I could write several paragraphs about just how revolting it is that the Sami flag was even banned to begin with (they reverted it in 2016, after months of backlash), but the point I want to drive home right now is that there is nothing "apolitical" about the EBU's flag policy, or the way it is enforced.
Reminder again to BOYCOTT EUROVISION 🇵🇸
Don't watch, don't vote.
#from the river to the sea palestine will be free#eurovision#esc 2014#boycott eurovision#also i just wanna quickly add that agnete wasn't the first sami artist at eurovision#she wasn't even the first sami artist to represent *norway*#(that was mattis hætta with 'sámiid ædnan')#so the fact that the flag was still banned...#also.. only allowing diaspora artist at esc to fly the flag of the country their representing? there's nothing 'apolitical' about that#the entire esc flag policy is like a microcosm of european racism

Del’s Favourite Songs Poll: 1980s
I thought the 80s would be easier to do since I always think of this as not being such a great decade for esc for me, especially towards the end, but there's still a lot I love to choose from!
Songs below the cut:

#eurovision#favourite song polls#the limit to two per year didn't quite come into play but we did come close with 1984#Italy from that year would probably be in my top 10 of the decade

So the 1980 Norwegian entry contained exactly two words of North Sámi: "Sámiid eatnan" (spelt sámiid ædnan in the orthography of the time) - I would not consider this a representation of Sámi language, just of the Sámi political Zeitgeist. That term (along with terms like Sámieatnan and Sápmi) are frequently used in Norwegian-langauge political discourse, when referencing the Sámi traditional area. The joik portion also did not contain any words, as is common with joiks. Nora Brockstedt's Voi Voi (Norway's 1960 entry) is in the same boat: the North Sámi introjection "vuoi vuoi" is in the title, and used throughout the lyrics as flavour, but I disagree that that constitutes an actual appearance of a Sámi language either. Incidentally, neither the singer nor the composter and lyrist, Georg Elgaaen, appear to be Sámi in any respect. I hope I'm wrong about this, but Brockstedt looks like she's wearing a fake gákti (Sámi traditional clothing) in the album cover for Voi Voi, so um...
What I would say counts is the 2019 Norwegian entry, Spirit in the Sky (Keiino), which had several full sentences of North Sámi.
The languages that have been heard in Eurovision.

Um, if the Eurovision asks are still open, would you mind sharing your opinion on Visionary Dream and Sámid Ædnan?
Btw I'm Charlie, if you still remember 😄
Eurovision asks are still open and yes, you can send me any song any time if you want my opinion lol!
Visionary Dream - I don't think I have more to elaborate, this is definitely my favorite georgian entry by far. Just from their debut you can see Georgia's affinity for bringing different styles and sounds. I especially love all about the instrumental and the ethnic touches, the energy, her vocals, it's something new and refreshing even if it was released 15 years ago, yet it still sounds modern after so many years.
Sámiid Ædnan - The predecessor of my absolute fave Spirit in the sky, and it's no surprise that I like it. The joik is just perfect and I demand more joik in this contest. And this was placed waaay too low. Geez, I was surprised to see how Norway didn't do so well back in the day, in the recent years they almost always get great results.

Dessverre tok joiken slutt for tidlig – hvil i fred, Mattis Hætta.
Simmona Máhtte, som han egentlig het, vant Melodi Grand Prix i 1980 med «Sámiid Ædnan». Onsdag døde han som følge av sykdom, 63 år gammel.

I ranked 1980
... And it's still a solid year! Hardly anything I properly dislike.
Emphasis on "hardly", there's still two songs on the shitlist 😂
Germany- Theater- Been a favourite for a long time, it's about time I gave it the first place slot
Greece- Autostop- Just saying, live > studio with this one
France- Hé hé m'sieurs dames- Those outfits are just *chef's kiss*
Ireland- What's Another Year?- Ooh, a sad song with substance? Don't mind if I do.
Turkey- Petr'oil- Catchy and clever, nothing more to say really.
Switzerland- Cinema- This could actually be a contender for first if it wasn't for her yelling PEETEHR PEHN at the start.
Luxembourg- Papa Pingouin- Cute and catchy, but still a gimmick nonetheless. And before you tell me, yes I know both of them are dead, you don't need to remind me.
Portugal- Um grande, grande amore
Austria- Du bist musik
Spain- Quédate esta noche
Finland- Huilumies
Norway- Sámiid Ædnan- Unintentional comedy aside... this does drag a bit, not gonna lie.
Denmark- Tænker altid på dig
Sweden- Just nu!- Honestly it just sounded so... limp
United Kingdom- Love Enough for Two
The Netherlands- Amsterdam- I'm sorry but I'm sick to death of hearing this song after hearing it in ever Discord RC session we have. It being boring as shit doesn't help either.
Belgium- Euro-vision- I don't care if it's meant to be tongue-in-cheek, it just seems half assed and lifeless to me.
Italy- Non so che darei- His falsetto is just... so fucking horrible.
Morocco- Bitaqat khub- If there's one thing I hate more than a boring gimmick song, it's a grotesquely overrated boring gimmick song. Yes this is down here out of spite, no I don't care.

i realised i never posted my ranking for the 1980 contest since saturday’s eurovisionagain, so here it is:
19. 🇬🇧 prima donna - love enough for two: this was so bad honestly how on earth did this end up coming 3rd in the actual contest.
18. 🇫🇮 vesa-matti loiri - huilumies: i didn’t really get this one at all, i have to be honest.
17. 🇦🇹 blue danube - du bist muzik: again, i just didn’t really enjoy this one.
16. 🇪🇸 trigo limpio - quédate esta noche: it was okay, very spanish, but didn’t really catch my attention.
15. 🇫🇷 profil - hé, hé, m’sieurs dames: i didn’t really like the song but they get extra points for energy & outfits.
14. 🇳🇴 sverre kjelsberg & mattis hætta - sámiid ædnan: the beginning of the song is good but the joiking that starts out of nowhere is a bit unsettling? but i guess they walked so keiino could run.
13. 🇬🇷 anna vissi & the epikouri - autostop: i expected different when i saw this was anna vissi, rather than a song about hitchhiking. but hey, this was a weird year.
12. 🇵🇹 josé cid - um grande, grande amor: this was ok, not really my type of song. he had great stage presence though.
11. 🇧🇪 telex - euro-vision: honestly top tier troll entry, super catchy & i love the synths.
10. 🇨🇭 paola - cinéma: this is sweet, i’m not super into it, but i think it’s a nice song.
9. 🇮🇹 alan sorrenti - non so che darei: the verses are great but i just wish he didn’t go full falsetto for the full chorus. also while watching, i said to my mum “alan’s not a very italian name, is it?” & i absolutely lost it when i found out he was welsh.
8. 🇱🇺 sophie & magaly - papa pingouin: simply iconic. i can’t stop saying “i wanna be your slave i wanna be your penguin” ever since the eurovisionagain account tweeted that. 🐧
7. 🇩🇰 bamses venner - tænker altid på dig: this was a very sweet song & i love his voice. outfits made me giggle too.
6. 🇲🇦 samira bensaïd - bitaqat hub: this was great, really didn’t deserve to come last. europe just wasn’t ready for a beautiful song in arabic. we miss you, morocco.
5. 🇸🇪 tomas ledin - just nu!: the original damiano david. this was amazing.
4. 🇳🇱 maggie macneal - amsterdam: this is like the prototype of a song i would love, so naturally i love it. also she is very pretty.
3. 🇩🇪 katja ebstein - theater: the legend herself, exactly the right mix of kooky & intriguing. to this day, i am still shocked she never won a contest she competed in.
2. 🇹🇷 ajda pekkan - pet’r oil: this is so beautiful & distinctly turkish. i loved the dancing as well.
1. 🇮🇪 johnny logan - what’s another year: for once i agree with the winner, and it’s because this song is one of my all time favourite ESC songs. in a strong year, this was still easily the best performance.

Eurovision 1980 my top 19
Hello, and welcome to another episode of this ESC tops, and we go back to April 19, 1980, when the 25th edition (wow) was held in The Hague, The Netherlands after Israel, last year’s winner, declined to host twice in a row. 19 countries took part, Israel and Monaco withdrew, the first because the contest was held in a holiday, making them the only country that doesn’t defend their title, and the latter withdrew until 2004. Anyway, Turkey returned and Morocco made their first and last entry. The contest was won by Ireland and Johnny Logan with the song What’s another year?, making this their second victory overall. And now, let’s review all 19 songs.
1st Place: THE NETHERLANDS/Maggie MacNeal-Amsterdam (Real Placing: 5th-93 points)
THIS IS FLAWLESS, this IMO should’ve won in 1980, Maggie’s voice is perfect and the music is wonderful, her performance is superb and wow, this has a lot of atmosphere. Maggie, you’re amazing!!!
2nd Place: IRELAND/Johnny Logan-What’s another year? (Real Placing: 1st-143 points)
Oh our winner and Mr. Eurovision first win, this song is very heartfelt and the lyrics are so sad, but Johnny’s voice is amazing. A deserved winner I must say but it’s not my favorite song of this year.
3rd Place: GERMANY/Katja Ebstein-Theater (Real Placing: 2nd-128 points)
Oh Katja, why are you an amazing singer with a wonderful voice, IMO this is the best of her three entries. This is catchy, the backing singers are amazing and their clothes are great, Katja as always stunning... I wouldn’t mind if this one won that night.
4th Place: GREECE/Anna Vissi & Epikouri-Autostop (Real Placing: 13th-30 points)
Again, I love this one so much, Anna’s voice is stunning and the music is bouncy but I feel happy with this one, this performance is perfect and I absolutely adore this song.
5th Place: FRANCE/Profil-Hé, hé, m’sieurs dames (Real Placing: 11th-45 points)
France with a fast song? So weird but for me it works, this song is very catchy and their outfits are pretty. The music is very good and keeps me entertained every time I listen to this one.
6th Place: SWITZERLAND/Paola-Cinéma (Real Placing: 4th-104 points)
This one is amazing as well, Paola’s voice is very strong and the music is catchy and I love the lyrics, they make me feel so happy and what a song!!! I’m in love with this one.
7th Place: PORTUGAL/José Cid-Um grande, grande amor (Real Placing: 7th-71 points)
AWWW THIS IS SO CUTE, the music is very good and the lyrics are very good as well, I’m in love with his voice and overall with this entry. This makes me happy and I want to dance along to it when I hear it.
8th Place: MOROCCO/Samira Bensaïd-Bitaqat Hub (Real Placing: 18th-7 points)
I LOVE THIS ENTRY, so good. The music is magical and her voice is pretty amazing as well, the bridge and the chorus are the best parts of this song. THIS ENTRY WAS SO UNDERRATED.
9th Place: TURKEY/Ajda Pekkan-Pet’r Oil (Real Placing: 15th-23 points)
This has an ethnic vibe that I love so much. her voice is so lovely and the music is brilliant, the performance was so good and this is such an enjoyable song to liste.
10th Place: LUXEMBOURG/Sophie & Magaly-Papa pingouin (Real Placing: 9th-56 points)
This entry is funny, catchy and memorable, also the penguin costume is hilarious, unfortunately their voices weren’t the best but still, this entry makes me feel so good when I hear it.
11th Place: ITALY/Alan Sorrenti-Non so che darei (Real Placing: 6th-87 points)
I like this song, but not as I did before, his voice is very good and the music is brilliant, overall a nice song and I love him so much.
12th Place: SWEDEN/Tomas Ledin-Just nu! (Real Placing: 10th-47 points)
This entry is great as well, Tomas’ voice is very nice and the music is good, quite rock but turns out to be more like a pop song. His microphone has a lot of failures but he’s such a professional. Nice entry overall, but Hit men inte längre or Växeln hallå would’ve been better choices.
13th Place: DENMARK/Bamses Venner-Tænker altid på dig (Real Placing: 14th-25 points)
This is very cute! I love their clothes and the music is so calm and lovely, also his raspy voice is nice, even though I can’t stand raspy voices a lot. Nice little song.
14th Place: AUSTRIA/Blue Danube-Du bist Musik (Real Placing: 8th-64 points)
This song is quite good but the verses kill it, also the voice of one of the female singers is quite bad in the chorus, overall a nice entry but with some details that annoy me.
15th Place: NORWAY/Sverre Kjelsberg & Mattis Hætta-Sámiid Ædnan (Real Placing: 16th-15 points)
This is a nice song, and the part with Mattis is simply wonderful, also the music is very Sami, the lyrics are also very good, but as far as I’m concerned, they did the dam anyway.
16th Place: BELGIUM/Telex-Euro-Vision (Real Placing: 17th-14 points)
This is... weird... just weird. The music is very 80′s but maybe this was too much for 1980.
17th Place: SPAIN/Trigo Limpio-Quédate ésta noche (Real Placing: 12th-38 points)
Another entry that is very annoying, I don’t know if it’s the music or the lyrics, but their voices are very good. Not a good song overall.
18th Place: UNITED KINGDOM/Prima Donna-Love enough for two (Real Placing: 3rd-106 points)
This is such a dull song, the music is very boring and they seem so stiff on stage. Also the lyrics are a bit cliché by the time, and I don’t know how this could end so high on the scoreboard that night.
19th Place: FINLAND/Vesa-Matti Loiri-Huilumies (Real Placing: 19th-6 points/last)
This is horrible, the music is erratic and weird, and his voice isn’t pleasant at all. Not one of Finland’s best song ever, even one of the worst.

flyttebyrå oslo;

Countdown to #Eurovision: Yearly Reviews - 1980
I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and now I feel it is time! We’re approximately three months away from the next edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, and while we’re waiting for more of the 2017 songs to be released before reviewing them (as we did last year), we’re going to revisit Eurovision song contests from the past and rank our favorites in each contest. We’re starting here - 1980, for various reasons that I’ll get to in a little bit, and then we’ll travel our way to the 2016 edition.
Being from America while also being a Eurovision fan means a few things: 1) I have a very shaded view of what Europe is actually like sometimes (it’s not all just sunshine and giggles) and 2) I don’t have a bias, or count for any diaspora. I have German and Polish ancestry, but that means little at this point - what I’m saying here is that I can review these songs and hopefully be a little less biased than the usual European fan. There’s still an opinion, though, but that’s why people vote in the first place.
Anyhow, we’re starting with 1980 because it begins one of my favorite decades of music. I love 80′s music. On top of that, this particular contest is so weird in both execution and song selection. The winner from ‘79 was Israel, but they didn’t host 1980 because they couldn’t attend. Nor did the UK host... nor France! Nope; it went to the Netherlands, and this was the last time that ESC has been hosted in a country that didn’t win the prior year. The Dutch finished 12th in 1979... which would be, for equivalency’s sake, the same as if Malta took over hosting for 2017. Morocco participated for the first and (likely) only time in 1980, and I think that’s mainly due to the fact that Israel wasn’t there (sorry, but prob. the truth) and also that they scored so lowly. But was that low score justified?
Instead of one host running the shindig, NOS allowed each delegation to bring a presenter for introducing their song, which they did in the language of that country. Another unique aspect of this otherwise ordinary presentation.
But what you’re here to read about are the songs, which, in this contest, are all over the place... which makes me love this contest even more, so let’s get started!

1. AUSTRIA - Blue Danube, “Du bist Musik”
It sounds very “broadway” to me. It’s not bad, though! In fact the singers are great and the early out-of-tune parts by the two women are forgotten by the end. I don’t have much more to say about this, other than it earned a good placing in the contest. These were the days before there was such a ‘young-person’ influence on the contest; the songs that paid homage to older genres usually did well. This was a good starting song to the new decade... I won’t be able to say that for the upcoming decades. XD
2. TURKEY - Adja Pekkan, “Petr’oil”
Lol, a song about petrol... Okay? Well, yes, actually. I do really like this! Reason being, this song starts a weird phase in the contest where the entries were... ‘out there’... in both style and content. Turkey’s close proximity to Arabia definitely influences some of their music, and that is easily heard here. It’s different, and I remember it. I love her dress, and that little belly-jiggle thing she does; her stage presence is so mesmerizing. And based on what I’ve read, this might have been one of Turkey’s first “good” songs in the contest. Now, it could have also been why it didn’t kill on the night - it was too out there and it does kinda drone on after a bit. But I don’t care.
3. GREECE - Anna Vissi & the Epikouri, “Autostop”
Funny that they follow Turkey with Greece, given previous contest history. Autostop! Autostop! We go from songs about oil to songs about cars and hitchhiking. No, please keep going, don’t auto-stop... the dance routine elevates this for me and it is so delightfully poppy. From the first dance move where they reveal... one of the backup singers? Plus they’re doing all that stuff with corded microphones? Holy crud. This is the first time that Anna Vissi participated, and it won’t be the last. I’m just as in love with this entry for the camp it brought... but it gets even more silly, very quickly.
4. LUXEMBOURG - Sophie & Magaly, “Papa pingouin”
And, here you go. I have sooo many words. So many. First, twin redheads in bright blue and pink jumpsuits. Second, we went from a song about oil, to cars, to... penguins. Third, there’s a giant 2-meter tall dorkazoid in a penguin suit on stage. They decided it’d be cool if he kept his glasses on for the performance. And somehow his buffoonery is all choreographed. Fourth, I think this constitutes the first time someone was slapped on the ass during an ESC performance. I just have so many questions... But it’s instantly catchy, that’s the thing. It wasn’t going to win, because for each person who can erase their mind for 3 minutes and acknowledge that the performance was enjoyable, there’s going to be the other song critic on the jury who ranks it last based on merit alone. But it did get Top 10. It’s just that... wow, did Luxembourg dip low.
5. MOROCCO - Samira Said, “Bitaqat Khub”
And it all culminates to this. One moment in time, a magical moment where Moroccan people decided “Yeah, why not?” and threw a song from Africa into the ESC, just for kicks. Can you imagine a world where Morocco won, and all of Europe had gone to Casablanca? Well... while I have to try and love this for the uniqueness of having Morocco in the contest, it just wasn’t “Eurovision” enough to spark the imagination, or to be in my Top 10 at the end. I don’t know Arabic; most of Europe can’t relate much to the language, and Italy ended up being the only country to give Morocco any points. Good on you, Italy - but it didn’t ultimately keep them from leaving the contest forever.
6. ITALY - Alan Sorrenti, “Non so che darei”
This is the first song that sounds “1980″ - well, I guess Turkey fits the glove a little bit. This is another tune that I like, if for the fact that he’s really trying to sell it. Again, the staging is a bit ridiculous, with the lilac/pink clothing and fake guitars. Those women are doing some kind of interpretive swaying to Alan’s crooning. The falsetto is not so great, but it’s what gives the song character. It’s worth some points.
7. DENMARK - Bamses Venner, “Tænker altid på dig”
Cute. But it was never going to win the contest! In fact I admittedly started looking at my phone as this was playing. Mister Homely-from-the-Hills just kinda stands there and strums his guitar, and after all the movement and activity from earlier, this just dulls down the mood for me. Denmark always sent the schlager and campiest of songs until the mid-90′s.
8. SWEDEN - Tomas Ledin, “Just nu!”
Seriously, this contest is so odd. The music is all over the place, and the staging of this - he kicks the microphone stand up into the air to start the whole thing off! Man, what a performance. Now we have rock music! I would have a lot of fun shouting at my friends the closest thing to this phrase in English - “Just no!” - and, in their inquiry of where the hell that lyric comes from, leaving it to mystery. Just ‘no’? Why no? Why are you doing this to me, Tomas? Are you leaving me, Tomas!?!
9. SWITZERLAND - Paola, “Cinéma"
More Broadway? Songs about the entertainment industry? Well, it looks like Switzerland brought us back to reality by showing us what usually goes over well at ESC. At one point Paola stops to do a little jig, and the little tuba bit at the end is cute! It’s better than Austria, but this is not something I desire to listen to again. There’s nothing extraordinary memorable about this song’s participation. You’ll see/hear why in a few entries from now.
10. FINLAND - Vesa Matti Lori, “Huilumies”
*head to desk* ... Okay, so, as we all know, before 1998 or something like that, all songs had to be performed in one of the official languages of the country. The Finnish language is so unique from everything else in this world, and so the first ten seconds of lyrics are agonizing. I really should’ve started an “R”-rolling counter. The man sings like the Trololo guy, and his instrument of choice is a flute. No! It’s great. So great. Good choices here. Total winner. Oh yeah. And it’s too bad; conductor Ossi Runne (legend!) was so into this. The guy solidified his ultimate ‘last place’ spot with whatever sound he made with his mouth in the last five seconds.
11. NORWAY - Sverre Kjelsberg & Mattis Hætta, "Sámiid Ædnan"
*head to ... desk?* If there’s any song that’s going to get away with half of it being the same lyric, it’s this one. The composition of this... it’s enigmatic. Seriously. Like, we go from orchestrated pop, to some weird pop-funk, brass-section grandiose big band thing, to a full stop (!) and the “Oh-leh-lol-eh” march theme. It’s great. I love it. I didn’t always love it, though. I think, on first listen however, this tune would have annoyed juries and listeners. It’s too unexpected and clunky. And so it landed towards the bottom of the voting board. But I’m going to give it some well-deserved love.
12. GERMANY - Katja Ebstein, “Theater"
*head to... nah just kidding :P* This song makes you forget about Greece and Switzerland; it’s very good. And again, still unique in comparison. It starts out with this ragtime piano type thing, and Katja just sells it. I can see why this was the runner-up. In the back of my mind, it would have been kinda bizarre if this had won - we would have seen much more joke entries in future years. We kind of got them anyway, but that’s a story for another journal entry!
13. UNITED KINGDOM - Prima Donna, “Love enough for two"
Lucky no. 13, you say? Tied score in the national selection, you say? And you picked this over... what? (Editor: This.) Oh, well, it was the right choice when compared to Prima Donna, but the fact of the matter is this song hasn’t aged well. It fits for 1980, and that’s why juries voted for it. But the outfitting and the cheesy lyrics irk me. Next.
14. PORTUGAL - José Cid, "Um grande, grande amor"
At the time, this song earned Portugal its best placing since their first participation, and I can see why. There’s faults to it, as well - it goes to 100% volume way too quickly, and there’s a “fake-out” ending for seemingly no reason. But Jose has a great voice; the vocals are flawless. And while this isn’t my favorite Portuguese entry, nor the most memorable, it should be recognized for its talent and skill during the live performance.
15. NETHERLANDS - Maggie McNeal, “Amsterdam”
I wish I knew Dutch; this sounds like a very grandiose, dramatic ballad. Ultimately I don’t think this song will make my Top 10 since there’s just so much other stuff in this contest to chat about. She has a great performance, and it gets the points, but... I don’t know, the Netherlands plays it somewhat safe with this entry when compared to the craziness of the other songs.
16. FRANCE - Profil, “Hé, hé, m'sieurs dames”
La belle France. For this first series of reviews, the French entry is sillier than usual; Profil are like this uncool disco-rock outlet of random people. This is a fun entry; I even downloaded the studio version of this song a while ago. This isn’t my favorite anymore, and the execution of this song live is kinda sloppy (they sped it up, too). But, again, it’s different - and thus, I love.
17. IRELAND - Johnny Logan, “What’s Another Year”
Yeah, the right song won. It’s another complex composition, not really structured to be a Eurovision song, but accomplishes all the things that a winner should accomplish - and it very much fits into the 1980 music scene. And Johnny wins it with that final note. “Mr. Eurovision” would go on to be the three-time winner, but why he couldn’t ever break into the international music industry remains forever a mystery.
18. SPAIN - Trigo Limpio, “Quédate esta noche"
Queeehhhh ehhhhh stahhhh, ooo-lah est-ah-de-dah... I think that singing pattern, after the 30th time repeating, gets on my nerves. It’s definitely a Spanish song, and elements of the composition are pretty, but this is too forgettable. That’s really all I can say about it. If you have further comments, let me know.
19. BELGIUM - Telex, “Euro-Vision”
I can’t believe this was magically drawn last in the ordering - a song in Eurovision, about Eurovision, in a contest where people were singing about all sorts of odd topics. It was the first fully-electronic entry in ESC history. We know this song for so many reasons now-a-days, but back then, this was not taken seriously. Regardless, the lead singer does his best job to stay with the choreography; his voice a bit shaky, probably due to nerves. He knew how ridiculous he was being in front of millions of Europeans. But, by golly, this will go down as one of the all-time greats. I love it, and so should you.
Well, that’s what I got. The manic contest has come to an end. The variety of songs in this one is why it’s one of my favorites; the only real other contest that challenges this variety from the decade is 1983. Here are my points for 1980′s contest:
12 - Ireland 10 - Germany 8 - Luxembourg 7 - Norway 6 - Greece 5 - France 4 - Belgium 3 - Turkey 2 - Sweden 1 - Portugal The “Big Fat 0″ award: Finland Honorable Mention: Morocco Worst Dressed: Italy - 50SS

Sámiid ædnan
Here's a translation of the lyrics to the song I just posted. I just think it's such an imortant song with really powerful lyrics:
Sámiid Ædnan (Sámiid earth)
A melody of Sámi earth, land that cradled them since birth Like a greeting from the north, from the north Sámiid Ædnan Whispering their one demand: Sámiid Ædnan – Sámiland Feel the breeze grow to a storm, to a storm Sámiid Ædnan
The storm that reached the parliament Sámiid Ædnan, Sámiid Ædnan Thunder from a native tent Sámiid Ædnan And who can take away their rights?
Hear the yoik go day and night Sámiid Ædnan Stronger than a battle cry Oh, Sámiid Ædnan
For a yoik will never die Oh, Sámiid Ædnan For a yoik will never die Sámiid Ædnan.

Sámiid ædnan ("Sámi Earth") was the winner of Melodi Grand Prix 1980. It was performed by Sverre Kjelsberg and Mattis Hætta. Sverre was also the one who composed the song, while Ragnar Olsen wrote the lyrics. This is the first time in the national Melodi Grand Prix that the Sámi traditional song, joik, is used, although the second time a song has a Sámi title and uses some Sámi words, the first being Voi voi in 1960.
More than anything, this song was very political and is actually referring to the Sámi people's political battle for more autonomy, as well as the hunger strike outside of the Parliament during the Alta controversy.(x)
During Eurovision, the song got 15 points and earned a 16th place out of 19 contestants. This year's winner was, for the first time, Ireland's What's Another Year by Johnny Logan. Despite the low score, however, the joik became a big hit around Europe, and a lot of people would be found singing it. However, some people believe the popularity of the joik has caused a lot of stereotype and culture appropriation, although it remains dear to many hearts.
30 years later, while Norway was hosting Eurovision in 2010, Sverre and Mattis returned to sing the song once more as a side concert.
It was also sung during a party in the The Thing prequel in 2011, where half the cast were Norwegians and played as such. Although Mattis was honored by this at first, he then grew negative as neither he nor Sverre was asked for permission to use it, if only out of respect since Universal Music took all the rights and royalties from them. The response from Universal Music was short and swift; "We own all the rights."(x)
In 2012's RidduRiđđu (a national Sámi festival), the duo appeared to sing the song once more.(x)
English translation should be available in the video.

(I urge you to read the description I wrote...)
