PRomance - Part Three

Paring: Chris Evans x Famous Reader

Description: Chris needs some good press. He convinces one of his closest friends to partake in a PRomance.

A/N: It has been, what, 84 years since I updated this story. I apologize. Like everyone, last year was tough. It was hard to find motivation to write. Hopefully, it won’t take me as long to update, but I can’t make any promises since I do have other fics that also need my attention.

When the paparazzi’s Valentine’s Day pictures of you and Chris were released to the media, everything was surprisingly calm. No major freak-outs. No major firestorms. The media was ecstatic at the prospect of a new celebrity couple they could fawn over. The fans of both stars appeared to rejoice at the pairing. Yes, some fans were upset and already pegged it as a PR relationship. But from what Megan had seen online, the overall consensus was that people were happy for you and Chris. It helped divert any negative attention Chris was getting for ASP.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 occurred, and the whole world seemed to stop. It was a crazy and scary time for everyone. Chris chose to quarantine in Massachusetts while you remained in Los Angeles to continue filming your daytime talk show. No longer were you filming the show on a sound stage, but now in your own home. Your crew had helped set up a special room in your home where you could film the show. It was a big adjustment. Especially since the show was in its first season.

You and Chris made sure to continue to keep the PRomance going during that time but kept it quiet and did not blast it everywhere. Which was easy since neither of you could go anywhere.

Once in a while, you both would appear on each other’s Instagram page, but it was sparingly. It was important to keep things minimal and not overblown.

The PRomance was only something to be brought up when you or Chris needed a PR boost. First-round went to Chris.

The second round would go to you. The show had been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award, and a PR boost was needed to keep you in the news. Thankfully, it helped that Ellen DeGeneres was going through a scandal about certain behaviors behind the scenes. This had already given you a nice PR boost about people wanting you to take over Ellen’s spot as daytime’s new queen. However, you knew that was not enough.

You knew it was a risk asking Chris to travel during COVID, but thankfully, he agreed. He promised he would take extra precautions when traveling. Plus, Chris had already planned on traveling to L.A. to help Scott move out of his boyfriend’s apartment. In fact, it was one of Scott’s neighbors who snapped a picture of you and Chris moving boxes from the apartment, which quickly spread throughout social media. It was a nice reminder for fans and the media to view it as you two still together.

Of course, Scott knew the truth. “I love you both very much, but I neither of you can bullshit this bullshitter,” he said to Chris while you were outside arranging the boxes in the moving truck. “Now, I’m not judging either of you. I understand the Hollywood game. I simply worry about people like Mom, Carly, and Shanna getting too attached to the idea of you two dating. What’s going to happen when all this is over, huh? Hearts are going to be broken in this situation. It’s bound to happen. Someone is going to get hurt.”

“No one is going to get hurt. When the time is appropriate, I’ll explain everything to Ma, okay. She’ll understand. Carly and Shanna will understand as well,” Chris explained to his little brother, but Scott wasn’t so sure.

Scott spoke your name and asked about you. “What about her?” Chris asked, confused at where Scott was getting at.

He looked around to make sure that you weren’t nearby and said, “Chris…how can I put this lightly, but this whole PRomance is not going to end well. I just have this feeling that one of you will get hurt. If I were to place a bet, then it would on the woman outside taking the time to help me move. She is my friend too, and I don’t want to see her get hurt just because you need some PR everyone in a while to make sure people realize that you are still around since you are no longer Captain America.”

Chris was stunned by Scott’s words. “Wow. That was pretty fucking harsh.”

Scott sighed. “I…okay, that last part was fucking rude of me to say. I’m sorry. But the rest I stand by. Don’t fuck this up, Chris.” And with that, Scott walked out of the apartment and joined you in the truck.

Later that week, you and Chris would have your second official PRomance outing. It would be simple: a walk in the park.

In truth, neither wanted to stay behind to help Scott unpack his things at Chris’s house.  

As Chris remembers, he held your hand “waffle style” and led you to an area on the grace that looked secluded.

“I’m tired,” Chris said, yawning and covering his eyes with his arm. You laid down next to him, keeping a good distance between each other.

“I’m tired too. I miss being around people, Chris. I’m miss doing the show in front of a live audience. It is not the same filming at home. I’m sick of Zoom,” you ranted. Lately, everything was upsetting you. It was a depressing time for everyone. But you knew that you were fortunate to still be able to do what you loved to do: entertaining people. You still had your home and a steady income. While others were not as lucky.

“I fucking hate Zoom. It makes everything so awkward,” Chris replied, and he turned his body towards you. He took off his mask since there were no other people around. You did the same.

He reached his arm towards you and began to stroke your hair. Without thinking too much, you scooted over to him and nestled under his arm. You laid your head on his chest while he continued to stroke your hair. It felt nice being close to someone. That is what you both were missing during these times, the closeness with other people. Affection. Intimacy.

You both stayed like that for a while. Neither knew how long time passed until Chris felt buzzing in his pants. It was his phone, and most likely Scott calling him.

“Scott?” you confirmed, looking up at Chris.

He reached for his phone, and low and behold, it was Scott texting that he needed help.

“We should get back, or else nothing is going to get unpacked,” said Chris with a sigh. It had been a week since Scott moved into his home and still had boxes everywhere.

“Give him a break. He is going through a breakup. It is the worst time to go through a breakup. Scott needs our support. Come on, get up,” you uttered, getting up and brushing the grass off of your clothes. You grabbed Chris’s arm and pulled him as well.

“We should stop by the liquor store and pick up some pizza on the way back,” you suggested to Chris as you both walked back to his car.

When you both made it back to Chris’s house, Scott was crying on the couch watching the ‘Notebook.’

“No!” you yelled out. “Not the ‘Notebook,’ Scott. That doesn’t help anyone.”

“I’m in mourning! Don’t judge me!” Scott yelled back. “Is that pizza?”

“You get pizza if you turn off the movie. Come on, we are going to skip the ‘Notebook’ phase of the breakup. Let’s move on to the ‘Steel Magnolias’ phase, which is a much better phase. We’ll still cry but also laugh.”

“I vote for ‘Steel Magnolias’ phase too,’ Chris piped in the pizza boxes on the kitchen counter and got out the blender. “I’ll make the margaritas.”

The park pictures were met with mixed emotions from the media and fans. One side found the pictures adorable. The other side was upset that you two were out walking the streets during these trying times. Unfortunately, it appeared that the critical side was louder this time around.

Thankfully, the negative press didn’t hinder you from winning your first Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host. By July, and after a long time of delays, A Starting Point was finally launched to decent reviews. Chris was happy. You were happy. Neither of you knew where to go from there. Would the PRomance come to an end? Was it still needed since both of you got what you wanted out of the arrangement? Or was it something you both were willing to still put on?

Three Sisters

Symerenia didn’t realize she’d missed Solaria until they were embracing each other on the stairs to the Evermourn estate.

She pulls Solaria’s hands towards her own lips; she kisses her skin, she kisses her knuckles, she kisses her ring,

She kisses her ring.

Symerenia pulls back, eyes wide. When she looks back into Solaria’s eyes, her sister’s golden hues are brimming with excitement and mischief. “Solaria—“

“Come on! I have so much to tell you!”

Solaria is dressed for summer. Her linen dress bounces as she walks into the circular living room of their shared home. It’s bustling with life. Vitali is splayed out on one of the couches like she owns the place, feet on the table, stroking a black cat in her lap. Nitali is having tea with another servant. They both lazily wave and smile at Symerenia like they’re equals.

Her gut freezes as the realization washes over her; this isn’t her home anymore. The other residents take their sweet time retreating into their chambers and the kitchen to give the two sisters some privacy, but not before Solaria speaks up; “Nitali, could you clear out Symerenia’s room and rent a nice room for Eurebus? Thaaanks!” Symerenia is almost left speechless. Almost. “Eurebus?” “Nynxarion’s daughter.” “Nynx—“

Before she has a chance to protest, Solaria pulls her into one of the couches.

“Please.” Symerenia doesn’t sound like herself - she never begs. “Please. Tell me everything.”

Faced with her sisters distress, Solaria only smiles, hugging the Blood Knight’s shoulder. And then she unravels the tapestry she’d been weaving while Symerenia was away.

The attack on the Nightflare estate. Symerenia had learned it burned to the ground - not in a million years would she had suspected her little sister to be the reason. Her little sister, who had never had a lick of talent for neither the Arcane nor the Light. Her little sister, now a fire mage. Her little sister, now engaged. The ring was decadent, fit for a Silvermoon noble - it’s what Symerenia always wanted, wasn’t it? For Solaria to settle down. And yet she only feels hatred and confusion staring into the blue jewel sitting on her sisters delicate hand.

“Symerenia.... I’m pregnant.”

The silence is overwhelming. Symerenia’s golden hues don’t stray from the engagement ring. Her heart skips a beat and then stops completely. It gets hard to breathe. Not him. Not Lord Nightflare. Anyone but Lord Nightflare.

“I’m.... going to be an aunt.” Symerenia takes Solaria’s hand into her own, and puts on her brave face. The smile she gives her little sister is warm and gentle, not betraying the hurt that’s welling up inside her chest. “Solaria. My little sister settled down at last, huh?” They both laugh. It doesn’t ease her anxiety. As she hugs Solaria to her chest, she stares off into the marble walls.

Lord Nightflare had done the impossible. Why him? “Congratulations.” When Solaria pulls back, the joy is oozing from every part of her. It’s too much. Symerenia has to look away, pretending to be distracted by the fresh flowers on the table.

“Sym. Nynx wasn’t alone when he attacked his father. He... uhm...” The hesitation in her sisters voice makes Symerenia look back at her. All the joy has evaporated in a matter of seconds. “.... yes?” “It’s... he... hired Somara.”

Symerenia wants to scream and sack the Estate. She wants to run away and never return. “No.” “They fought - she fought for him.”

The stoic Blood Knight feels her tears threaten to spill, but then she sees hat Solaria is already crying. In that very moment, Symerenia accepts her duty. The one occasion where she can still be a big sister. She hugs Solaria and doesn’t let go until the young blood elf has cried out every last teardrop. The sun sets and the sky turns dark while they sit there, the Estate quiet except for Solaria’s heartbroken cries. Symerenia stares into her palms. Rough and hardened from decades of fighting. Decades of sparring. Decades of dueling with her beloved Somara. “We still have each other.”

It’s a bitter, empty solace. They’re both missing a piece of themselves that neither can fill. They lost Somara once before - and now she’s lost to them again.

Symerenia tosses and turns until she can’t bear it any longer. She takes one last look at the room that has been her home ever since Quel’thalas fell. Her sanctuary in a house that was always ruled by her sister and her servants. She wasn’t going to be kicked out of her own home. She was going to leave on her own terms.

So she packs everything that holds any sentimental value. She leaves the Evermourn heirlooms for Solaria and the future of their family. She dons her armor. As the Blood Knight leaves her room, she casts a glance up by to the balcony where her sister sleeps, no doubt accompanied by Vitali and Nitali. One last time.

She leaves in the dead of night. She locks the door and stashes away the key, never to be used again.

It’s a long ride back to Hearthglen.

Adventure Time-Come Along With Me Recap

The fun will never end it’s adventure time! Spoilers below. 

After Sym Bionic Titan wasn’t renewed for a second season, a coworker told me that Adventure Time better turn into something great. Little did he know. Adventure Time came right when we needed it.  This is bittersweet for me. My first review for this blog was for the season six episode “Breezy”. It’s still my least favorite episode. And the rest of season 6 didn’t really help matters. But the show bounced back, next season. And was still one of the best on tv to the end.

Due to a series of circumstances involving Aqua Teen Hunger Force, a lightbright, and the city of Boston, Cartoon Network got a new head executive who wanted to move the channel in a new direction. He greenlight a series of reality shows and launched CN Real in 2008 planning to move away from cartoons completely. This move was universally hated by everybody and cost the channel millions. Fast forward to 2010 had Cartoon Network premiering it’s first cartoon since the failure of CN Real. It didn’t just save Cartoon Network it saved cartoons. Cartoons were kind of fading from television. Nick and Disney didn’t have a lot of animated shows at the time. And there was a lot of stuff like Adventure Time at the well... time. It’s hard to image since how cartoons have built off it’s style, but Adventure Time really was a breath of fresh air. If we didn’t have Adventure Time we wouldn’t have had Gravity Falls, Steven Universe and so on and so on. It showed everyone that cartoons could be funny and smart too.

It did have issues. Particularly in season six when the show started to by its own hype. And the gave everyone daddy issues. And I mean everyone. Finn, Marceline, Lemonhope, Jake, Jake’s kids, Jake’s brother, Jake’s grandkids. But they did improve season seven going onward by grounding the lore and the story based on the characters. I think deciding ending the series forced them to address interesting lore points.

Speaking of the ending, let’s talk about the finale. It begins a thousand years in Ooo’s future, seen in Lemonhope and Graybles 1000 +. We join Shermy and Beth, who looks like a decedent of Jake and Ladycorn, as they try to topple a Prize Guard Guardian. They fail but gain the ire of a futuristic banana guard. The duo also find an old metal arm. Finn’s metal arm. The return to their house, which is Marceline's house. The two decide to find the King of Ooo to see if he knows anything about it.

The duo travels up a mountain to the King’s house, who turns out to be BMO with a crown and a sheet tied to his face to mimic a beard. Shermy and Beth look around the room breaking a lot of stuff. BMO asks them to leave but the show him Finn’s arm. BMO remembers his old friend and how he lost his arm at the end.

We go back a thousand years. Finn and Jake see King Man and Betty doing something with the unconscious Maja. The three disappear. They report it to Bubblegum who is planning a defense against Gumbald and his army. Both Finn and Marceline warn Bubblegum about the war. The show is framing them in the right but I disagree. Look, war is bad, I get that. But you gotta defend yourself. This isn’t a cold war equal power kind of deal. Gumbald is gunning for Bubblegum. Ask Neville Chamberlain how well appeasement works.

Bubblegum discovers a spy forcing her to launch the attack now. Gumbald, who knows his spy was caught, knows what she would do launches an attack himself. Before the two forces duke it out Finn throws a potion he got from Nightmare Princess back from that episode set between the island and elementals mini series. Finn, Jake, Gumbald, Fern, and Bubblegum are hit and trapped in a shared dream. Finn tries to get Gumbald and Bubblegum to talk it out but the two fly off to dream fight. So Finn tries to get Fern to listen to him, but that’s not working out for him either. Jake meanwhile, conjuring up his brother, goes looking for something in there shared minds. He finds what he’s looking for. Finn’s vault. Finn tries to explain that he has issues just like Fern but Fern insists that he’s the only one who angsted. Trust me Fern, Finn have angsted plenty, just watch season six.

Jake comes in with the vault and opens it releasing a bunch of bad memories. Fern sees that Finn does suffer and Finn and Jake are transported into Fern’s head. The episode does rush past the bad memories without much thought. But I get they only have so much time for the episode. They find that grass octopus holding Sword Finn. Finn kills the grass ocotpuss and frees his time displaced counterpart.

Meanwhile, Gumbald gets to experience running the candy kingdom while Bubblegum lives turning into a candy person. The two get a better feel for each other.

The five of them meet up at the beach. Fern starts to distagrate but Jake assures him it’s just a dream. They wake; but Fern is still disintegrating.  Can I just say I love LSP’s “Oh no, there dead! Oh wait there fine.” It just really cracked me up. Gumbald and Bubblegum go to hug it out but at the last moment he pulls out the candy juice. But Lolly trips him and it spills all over Gumbald turning him back into punchbowl, saving Bubblegum. Guys, I feel so validated.

We cut back to the future and Beth thinks that BMO meant the end of the war, but no BMO meant the end of Ooo. Because as soon Aunt Lolly and Bubblegum makes peace, King Man comes crashing down, telling everyone he donked up. Bad. The chaos demon Golb comes down with an unconscious Maja and Betty in a trance. Somewhere deep in Ice King, Simon flashes back to him and Betty discussing GOLB. Back in the present, GOLB turns a bunch of people into a giant monster. The army Gumbald had recruited flees. Boy they were pointless to bring back. Bubblegum turns to the banana guards. She asks them if the will obey her orders. When the yes, she orders them to run away for their lives. Which they do.

King Man and Finn bring Ice King to Betty hoping he can snap her out of trance. Ice King sings the Fiona song. We never got an answer for that Fiona transmision plot line did we? Betty is not happy but that frees Maja who laugh at her chance of revenge. She is promptly overloaded by GOLB’s power and explodes. GOLB than eats Betty, Ice King, and Finn. Biting off Finn’s robot arm in the process.  

The monster goes on a rampage and smashes Bubblegum, sending Marceline into a rage. She knocks back the monster and attend to Bonnie. After the two talk, the girlfriends kiss. Good for them. It was never my ship but it was a huge part of the fandom and they deserve to be canon.

Jake fights the monster, who smashes the tree house and BMO’s face. BMO picks up a smashed tiny Jake and sings ‘Time Adventure’ the last song Rebecca Sugar wrote for the show. While singing the monster couldn’t attack them. Bubblegum realizes that creatures of GOLB are creatures of disharmony. And thus are hurt by harmony. So the cast begins to sing.

Meanwhile, trapped in his stomach, Betty and Simon are reverted to their premagic selves. The crown itself also switches to it’s prewish state. Betty and Simon are finally reunited, only to have to face of death. Finn fruitlessly punches the walls. But the song gets through and opens up GOLB’s stomach. Simon and Finn escape while Betty ops to stay behind to use the wish crown. She wishes for what she always wanted, Simon safe. Betty fuses with GOLB and disappears. The crown falls with a clang. I feel the show was a little harsh towards Betty’s quest to save Simon. It’s not her fault that Magic Man transferred his insanity into her.

Gunther picks up the Ice King’s crown and Jake reminders everyone that Gunther is a powerful space demon. But the crown just turns him into a smaller version of the Ice King head from the Garybales episode. Fern distagrates for real and Finn and Jake planet him were the tree house was.

BKO finishes his story. Beth and Shermy thought it was a story about the end of Ooo. BMO tells them it was. They asked what happened to everyone. BMO says they lived their lives. As the two leave and giant Sweet P can be seen walking in the background. They walk to the giant tree and Sherny pulls the Finn sword at of the top.

We cut back to Finn and Jake at the song hole, who sings the ending theme. We see flashes of everyone. Gunther marries Turtle Princess. LSP is crowned queen of Lumpy Space, Simon tries to find Betty, Marceline and Bubblegum cuddling on the couch, Susan and Frieda are still exploring, and Minerva leading the humans to Ooo.

I am bummed that we didn’t get anything with Finn and Huntress Wizard. I thought they worked as a couple and we spent a good chunk of the series dealing with Finn’s love life and would have liked some resolution to that. Also, why are the candy people in stasis in the future?

I think the final episode could have used another 15 minutes to flesh some stuff out. Other than that it was a great ending. I was a little worried we were gonna get a bad or strange ending, but I was happily wrong. It was bittersweet in some ways but did right by most of the main cast.

A Rogue's Journal: Entry 2

Within the dark corner he sat.  Within the room he often sleeps.  Within the apartment he now calls home.  Razail’s objects are scattered on the floor for him to see all at once; there are so many more than before.  Hugging a soft, warm, and plush sun with one arm, he starts to write in his journal.

It’s been over a year since I wrote Anything in here that I didn’t rip the page out after, and a lot of things have happened.  I’m no longer with the one I loved last I wrote, or in the place I called home then.  I’ve gone on any mission I could, and kept falling to the ground.  I found out there were, and still are, things not right with me.  I found the shaman that saved my life and found out most of his family has died.  That shaman brought me to my parent’s old house, so now I where that is and I have tried to fix it as much as I can so far.  I also found a couple people I’m related to after finding a picture of my parents.

I have a new place I can call home with a little brother and his father.  I didn’t think I would have another place to try and live in.  I wanted to help protect Samiel, keep him safe, and then I wound up staying more and more after that.  I’ve seen how him and his Pop, Tyleril, do things together, and the things that I didn’t get a chance to do with my parents that I really wish I could have.  I don’t remember much of them but I miss them a little more since being around Samiel and Tyleril.  I’ve caught myself a couple times calling Tyleril Pop.  I don’t know why but I know he’s been so very nice to me.  I’m so very scared of the day they won’t want me around, I love them both so much.

We went to a tournament and I got to try and joust again.  Tyleril and Samiel cheered me on, along with SO MANY Oathsworn too!  I wasn’t just up against Sunguard people this time, and there were so many different people around!  I won two times, and lost the third one to a fellow Oathsworn, Emberward Highdawn.  She’s strong, and seems to like animals too.  I was happy to lose to someone I might be able to go up against again.  First match I was up against Aeleara, like the final round that first time I tried jousting.  She forgot her shield though, so I had won.  I feel a bad about it and want to go against her again whenever we can joust again.

Samiel and I watched Tyleril duel spar? on top of Finnigan and this nice Tauren lady gave us a blanket to keep warm!  Nuellen Swiftstrike left cupcakes for people at the Sunguard’s both, at least I think she was the one.  I grabbed two after my jousting was done.  They were so good!  I fell asleep under one of the carts, but Tyleril found me and brought me back to the tent.  I was so tired.

There’s twins that live in the apartment with Tyleril, Samiel and me were there too.  The wrestle around a lot at home.  Sometimes they knock the couch over and onto me.  Tyleril’s helped me when I got hurt.

Phoebe has cubs!!!  3 of them and I have the names a little couple months ago.  Jessie, James and Jenny.  Jessie always wants to play and meet people, she’s silly.  James wants to meet people too but won’t run up to them like Jessie does.  He got hurt once and he has scars on his back.  He seems too try and protect or make Jenny feel comfy.  She seems very shy.  Jenny loves to lick my hair like Phoebe does, and be close to someone all the time, usually James starts near her.

James comes home with me a lot, and he likes Aestus.  Aestus lived with us for a little bit then moved into an apartment on the roof!  He left a key for us to go visit whenever and I think I will more with James.  He helped take care of Finnigan too when I was too hurt to.  I like him.

I met someone in the forest, well Phoebe did and I found her with him.  He has a cougar and is a farstrider.  He wrote the books Samiel and I read!  I’m in love with him but I’m scared.  I don’t want to have him go away.  Sym’s funny and sweet and cares.  He came to see me and take care of me when I was hurt.  I saw him at the tournament too!  He sounded really surprised I could joust.  I’m surprised I do okay at it.

It’s scary, how right the Oracle’s cards seem to be, or at least how much they start to make me think.  Most recent one made me realize I really am scared of being alone more than dying.  I was alone for so long and didn’t have anyone but Phoebe and Finnigan around me.  I’m glad I have friends and people around I can try to talk to.  I know I’m still learning how to be a normal? person, like them, but I’m trying.

My hand really hurts so I’m stopping.  I’ll try to write in here again before another year passes.

There's Beauty in the Breakdown

It’s been 7 months since I said goodbye to everyone and everything I know and love in America to embark on this Peace Corps journey in Thailand. As I sit in my hospital bed in Bangkok, reflecting on the last 7 months, I’m at a loss for words. Where to begin… I’ve avoided writing any blog posts for awhile, trying to process, not knowing exactly what to say. I hesitate to talk about my struggles, not wanting to invite pity; and I refrain from writing only about the victories for fear of telling half truths and seeming fake. I’ve allowed myself to be paralyzed into silence by worrying about what other people think. Realizing that simple fact, has me questioning who I am. In America, I never worried about what others thought before speaking my mind. But here… There’s something about being outside of your comfort zone that causes you to question everything. But now, it’s time to peel back the curtain. This is my blog, after all. I’m the only one who can speak my truth.

Since the beginning of 2017, I’ve experienced an exceptional amount of loss and grief. In November, I met my soulmate, Avery, only to turn around in January and leave him behind while I embark on my new journey. It hurt to leave, but this is my dream, and after many discussions, we decided that our love is strong enough to make it through the 27 months apart. The good part is that I already know who my other half is. I found him. How many people can say that?

After about two months of training, I found out from a friend back home that one of our friends died from an overdose. I made excuses to distance myself from feeling pain. “We weren’t that close.” “I knew he had a problem.” “He’s at peace now.” But it still had an impact on me. He was at my going away party and now I’ll never see him again, which is surreal to me. He was 36 years old.

During PST (Pre-Service Training), I had various health issues. Twice I had stomach infections so bad I had to be put on antibiotics to stop the diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fevers. Throughout the three months I had severe back pain that made it difficult to bike long distances, sleep at night, and even concentrate in language classes. This also made me pretty unpopular with a couple of the volunteers at the time. As much as they resented me for my physical disability, I resented myself for it as well.

On the day we were given our site placements, I was disappointed. Nothing I’d hoped for worked out. I hoped to be near Liz, my “sister from another mister” who lived in the house next to mine during PST. That didn’t happen. I hoped to be near anyone I was close with. That didn’t happen. I hoped to be near the beach or the mountains, somewhere beautiful. That didn’t happen. I got Angthong - a site about 40 minutes from the Golden Dragon Hotel where we were staying in Central Thailand. All of the reasoning made sense - to be near Bangkok in case I needed physical therapy for my back, etc. But I was still disappointed. I took the day to feel it and the next day I chose optimism. I would wait to judge until I got there.

When I did get there, it seemed that I was the only one waiting to judge. My host family was extremely overbearing. The kind of people who just want to love the life right out of you, and teach you and learn from you every single day from dawn til dusk. The only person who I felt loved me unconditionally was my little 5 year old brother, Pu. He would take my hand and kiss the back of it and look up at me and smile. I’d lay in the hammock and he’d come lay across my belly and stay there while I rubbed his back. We would dance and play Spot It and color together. He was my favorite.

From March 22nd until April 8th, I thought this would be my home in Thailand for the next two years. On April 8th, all of that changed. An incident with one of the family members made it unsafe for me to stay in Angthong and complete my service there. So on April 9th, Peace Corps officials removed me from my site and I went to Bangkok for ten days before being granted leave to go home to the U.S. for 14 days to recover with friends and family. The worst part about leaving Angthong was that I had to leave without saying goodbye to Pu. I left him a drawing and my Spot It cards. The silver lining to this very dark cloud was an unexpected reunion with my love, Avery, and my family and friends. It was difficult working through my feelings, but I’m not sure I could have continued to serve and complete two years here without that break.

My return to Thailand was timed so that I came back during Maycation, a vacation in May on an island called Koh Mak, planned by the 128s (the group before us - we’re 129s). This was the perfect way to come back - relaxing on an island with all my PCV friends. The following Monday at 8am, I was off to my new site in Lamthap, Krabi in a Peace Corps van with my favorite driver, Arun. It was a 13.5 hour drive. We would be taking a break in Surathani, about 2.5 hours from Lamthap.

On May 8th, about an hour into the drive, I got a message from my mom that she had to put down our cat, Lucy. This was unexpected. We had no idea Lucy was sick and just like that, she was gone. I cried for a couple minutes in the van, but it was so quiet, I started to feel awkward, so I stopped. I thought, I’ll wait for a more appropriate time, when I’m alone, to grieve for my cat… but I never really did. After that, there was so much newness, so much anxiety to deal with, that grieving for my cat was no longer a priority.

Things went fine for awhile. I really liked my new site. Even though school started when I arrived in Lamthap, everyone was very nice and gave me plenty of time and space to get adjusted. I couldn’t have asked for a better site or a better counterpart. I had more time, so I was talking to Avery on the phone every day, thankful for the reliable WiFi in my room. I loved my new host family, so kind and funny. My host sister speaks English and is relatable since she’s closer in age (20).

Then came the storm again. An annual burn I go to, Wickerman, came and all my friends back home went, including Avery. I knew they’d have fun and I wanted them to, but with no reception on the mountain, it made for a lonely 4-5 days for me. When the burn was over, I was happy to talk to Avery again. The next day, I woke up to some not so happy messages. My friend Ken had died over the weekend. He was 65 and very sick, but that did not make it any easier. He was one of my best friends and I would never see him again.

Unfortunately, the same week, my host grandfather (who is 94 years old) got very ill and was admitted to the hospital. It became a very lonely week for me because everyone was either working or sitting with Dtaa at the hospital to make sure he wasn’t mistreated or robbed. The following week, my host cousin, Model (age 14), was hit by a car while walking home from school and sustained a serious head injury. The good I decided to take from this, was that I was thankful to be living with my host family. If I had to live alone and be in an empty house all the time like I was for that one week while Dtaa and Model were in the hospital, I’d be depressed for most of my service.

At this point, I felt the emotional burdens were too great. I decided to call PCMO (our doctor) and ask to speak with a counselor. I was able to make some parallels that helped explain why everything was hitting so hard. My friend Ken who died reminded me of my dad. Ken’s death allowed some feelings from my dad’s death to resurface which amplified my sorrow. Model’s head injury mirrored my own head injury that I sustained at the age of 10, and made me worried for him. Mostly the counselor just listened to me without judgment and gave me a safe space to share my feelings, which I desperately needed. It was good and I felt better after the call was over. I told her that Reconnect was coming up and then I’d be able to see my friends and get lots of hugs and I’d be fine after that.

So I went on a beach trip with some friends, which was great for me. Then to Reconnect. Then my friend, Lauren and I traveled to Singburi together to visit our old host families from PST. All of that was great fun. Then, on the way back to Bangkok, I started to feel sick. Well, Friday I felt a little sick, but you get diarrhea here a couple times and it’s really NBD. Saturday, I got progressively worse, until at 1am I was calling PCMO from my hostel saying something was very wrong. Luckily, I ran into my sweet friend, Olivia who put me in a cab in the middle of the night to the hospital. I was admitted. They ran tests. The next thing I know, I’m missing my flight back to Krabi but I don’t care because my insides are coming out. Four agonizing days later, we get the results back. Salmonella and Campylobacter. Two different kinds of bacteria. That explains it.

From my hospital bed, on the phone with my host sister, Sym, I find out that Dtaa’s caretaker, Pa La, quit her job, moved out of her room next to mine, and changed her phone number. I am devastated. She and Sym are my only two friends at site. Were my only two friends. Yet another person I didn’t get to say goodbye to that I’ll never see again.

So what is the meaning of all of this pain and grief? During Reconnect, my friend Libby was kind enough to give me a tarot card reading. My cards were: Guilt, Letting Go, Friendliness, Trust, and Maturity - in that order. During this reading I realized that I felt a lot of guilt around my feelings of grief. I’m always so caught up in trying to be positive, trying to be okay, that whenever I’m not okay (which is a lot lately), I shame myself for it. I realized that I haven’t been allowing myself to feel my negative feelings which only makes things worse. The truth will come out one way or another. If I don’t let myself grieve, I can’t let go. I can’t be friendly. I won’t let myself trust. I’ll never mature past this point.

Grief comes in waves. Huge crashing waves that you can’t go around. You have to let them wash over you. It’s ok to look on the bright side. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t. But when the waves of grief come, it’s ok to feel the sorrow too. Letting go is a part of life, and it’s the hardest lesson I’m still learning every day.

Thyroxy Part 1 – The original Thyroxy – Diagnosis

Where to start? From the beginning? Thereabouts..

I was about 14 when I went for a jog with my mum and started hyperventilating. Mum, in her hard parenting style told me to walk home as she kept running. I sat for a couple of minutes and somewhat recovered. Determined, I trailed after her, pulling myself along, walking and jogging through the suburb, desperate to catch up. I wasn’t a fatty, not even slightly chubby. I was actually so skinny that it I put my forearms together I couldn’t make the skin touch. People would say I had hollow legs with the amount I ate and the weight that never came with it. I didn’t look unhealthy.. at least I don’t think I did. I just looked like a regular 14 year old girl. I thought I behaved like one too.. I was a moody teenager (but far more tolerable than my younger sister, my parents later realised), I had  tantrums and loads of energy that would burn out as soon as I actually used it. So when I got back from this run/walk mum was concerned regardless of my efforts and took me to a doctor. The local GP diagnosed me with asthma and I was put on a puffer for a year or so.

My brother had asthma and our symptoms were quite different. Mum wasn’t convinced that it really was the issue when endurance in exercise didn’t improve (thank god!) so eventually we found a good pediatrician. The pediatrician could immediately see that I had a large goiter (thyroid) and bulging eyes indicative of a thyroid condition, Graves disease. Finally we had answers, I wasn’t ‘just a teenager’. I was placed on ‘carbemazole’ to subdue the thyroid activity.

Graves disease or hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid and occurs if the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, causing every function in the body to speed up. Symptoms include:

Weight Loss/Increased Appetite

Loose Bowel Motions/Diarrhoea

Increased Sweating

Difficulty sleeping

Heart Palpitations

Hand Tremor

Tiredness/Weak Muscles, particularly around the upper arms and thighs

Enlarged thyroid gland

Menstrual Changes/Fertility Problems

Restlessness/Nervousness

Emotional/Irritability

Shortness of Breath

Protruding or Staring Eyes

My pediatrician also recommended we also test for Coeliac disease as the two generally come hand in hand. A coeliac blood test was indicative on Coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease occurs when the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats), causing small bowel damage. The tiny, finger-like projections which line the bowel (villi) become inflamed and flattened. This is referred to as villous atrophy. Villous atrophy reduces the surface area of the bowel available for nutrient absorption, which can lead to various gastrointestinal and malabsorptive symptoms. Symptoms can also be caused by inflammation in other parts of the body. Symptoms include:

gastrointestinal symptoms e.g. diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, cramping, bloating, abdominal pain, steatorrhea

fatigue, weakness and lethargy

iron deficiency anaemia and/or other vitamin and mineral deficiencies

failure to thrive or delayed puberty in children

weight loss (although some people may gain weight)

bone and joint pains

recurrent mouth ulcers and/or swelling of mouth or tongue

altered mental alertness and irritability

skin rashes such as dermatitis herpetiformis

easy bruising of the skin

A lot of these double up with symptoms on Graves but I like to believe we caught the coeliac early and I didnt experience these. In the end, they are both autoimmune conditions and therefore have similar roots and symptoms.

We were were just about to holiday to America when I was diagnosed so I promised to start a gluten free diet afterward. I ate everything there and savored it.. pretzels, mac and cheese, McDonald’s.. it was great. Post-America, in the world of the mid-late 2000’s I was gluten free before it was cool..  There was no gluten free bread at the supermarket, never mind croissants, pasta or pizza bases. The best I got was a gluten free wrap that tasted exactly like cardboard. So I naturally became a bit more paleo without even trying? Or I definitely turned to rice based alternatives. I’m kind of glad I was diagnosed in that era, the amount of gluten free crap there is now would have had made me nostalgic for gluten based products.. and a lot fatter than I became..

In saying that I wasn’t very strict with my diet. I excused my diet when it came to birthday cakes and the like. I didn’t have coeliac symptoms back then when I poisoned myself so I thought it wasn’t so bad.. damn Rox! My doctor was much more concerned than me. I had two biopsies (camera down the throat) to check on my small intestine and assess the damage. There was none and they were not indicative of coeliac disease. Or was it the other way around? I may have been presumed to have had coeliac disease but blood tests were inconclusive while biopsies indicated the diseases presence..

Anyway, thyroid levels were the main concern for a long time. Ultimately, Graves is supposed to be put into remission by taking the carbemazole dose down slowly, kind of ‘training’ the thyroid not to be a psycho. When we originally found my Graves I was in danger of ‘thyroid storm’ meaning my thyroid gland had generated so much thyroid hormone and it would dump all of the hormone into my system causing a range of symptoms like shaking, fever, brain fog and extreme moodiness. Getting on top of my thyroid levels took a long time with a few spikes here and there. We were pretty worried as I went into high school because naturally my parents wanted me to do well (and so did I of course). Even when my levels were a bit high I felt I couldn’t concentrate (it’s described as someone always knocking at your brain or ‘brain fog’), I’d get fatigued easily and I’d be downright moody! We (my parents, doctor and I) didn’t want a flare up over exams or study periods, so I think I was put on a higher dose to subdue the thyroid function as much as possible as a precaution, so I actually gained a bit of weight.

I did ok at high school, considering the type of study I did and how much information I could learn and retain with my poo brain.. Once that was over and I was working through my gap year I had time to assess myself. I remember thinking about how much I hated this weight I’d put on and maybe I was hardwired to be skinny. Maybe it was just the way I was supposed to be! Maybe I developed Graves and was predisposed to it because that’s just who I am. Why does everyone have to be ‘normalised’? What is ‘normal’? So I started taking less of my carbemazole against the order of my doctor, in hope to let my thyroid do its funky thing and make me thin again. It definitely did some funky things..

After year 12 my boyfriend at the time was living in Darwin while his family worked in Cambodia in the Australian Federal Police. I didn’t like his living arrangements with a family friend of theirs (it was a dirty house with a bogan mum and autistic kid) so I managed to persuade my parents to let him move in with us (still don’t know how I managed to do that). Anyway.. one day I decided to be a complete mess because I was feeling so angsty and frustrated about myself, work and life at that point in time. I drank a bunch of vodka and laid in the kitchenette listening to music really loud. I remember him coming in, I made an argument about something stupid and then proceeded to wail on the floor, crying my eyes out and literally taring my dress up. Yeah, real top quality thyroxy moment! Poor Tim, hanging out with a hyperactive thyroid everyday. His efforts to calm me down were useless and he just had to leave while I sat it out. So angsty teen attention seeking plus hyperthyroid was a recipe for disaster. But I was coming out of my teens by this point? Why weren’t my levels settling down when I backed off the dose? I was well and truly leaving puberty behind..?
