A Meticulous Review of Rey's Costumes in The Force Awakens
Let's talk about how interesting Rey's two costumes in this movie are and what they tell us about her character.
The main costume Rey wears in this film is her Scavenger outfit. First, I like the way it is sort of hodge-podge. Unlike the other ladies I've talked about in the franchise, she wouldn't have anyone making her clothes - this is what she put together herself. It has a lot of great details that give texture to the costume (unlike, for example, Leia in ANH). Her staff, bag, and other things are all wearable because she would need to be able to move in a hurry without anyone taking her stuff. She's such a unique character and her costume is a perfect representation of that.
Female representation: 10/10 Honestly, I could not be happier. The scarves give her a feminine silhouette in a very practical way. Considering what other ladies wear in hot environments (even in this franchise), this makes SO much more sense. It's clearly something she would put together herself, not something for us to look at her wearing.
Practicality: 10/10 Again, so practical! It gives off the impression of being pretty while actually being capri pants and a tank top. She is covered up in a way that makes sense for being somewhere hot - everything is light and breezy. It's perfect.
I couldn't find a good photo from the Force Awakens, so please forgive that this is from TLJ (I will talk about it in response to that movie later). For this film, it is an interesting addition to make at the end, where she is now the Jedi representative of the Resistance, going to fetch Luke. First, it is a similar structure to her Scavenger outfit (likely something she owned, then?). Instead of the scarves, it has a vest and actual arm warmers instead of just wraps, so presumably this is what she wears when it is colder. We've now replaced the neutral tan for blending into the sand with this cold grey ensemble. It matches the terrain of where she's going while also reflecting her maturity. She was wearing the same outfit essentially since she was a child - now she is wearing more somber colors and growing up for the next stage of her adventure.
Female representation: 10/10 Since it is so similar to the previous one, it deserves the same score. Even if it is not fighting against the expectation of what women wear in heat, it is a great outfit to indicate a woman is no longer a child and I love that it manages to do so without sexualizing her.
Practicality: 10/10 Again, about as practical as you can be. And warmer this time, which is nice. Instead of light and breezy, the fabric is stiffer to hold the same silhouette. What can I say, it's just great.
