maybe its just because i grew up far outside of the most important parts of michigan (ive always lived like 2/3 hours away from detroit and have only ever been there one time) but i feel like i never learned jack shit about michigan or its history or its political landscape throughout school to be honest. i didnt even really learn anything in depth about flint OR detroit for that matter actually other than it being the heart of the automotive industry. ive been watching documentaries about it lately with my girlfriend after talking about how ive always grown up feeling like michigan has nothing special about it and no real unique Culture to it the way that some other states do (like my girlfriend is from louisiana so obviously you can see what i mean there since louisiana is such a crazy and depthy state) and its been interesting to learn about how much of it is just... like... desolate. abandoned. it is a surprisingly tragic state. (sufjan stevens michigan album captures this perfectly imo btw)
