Sonic Forces Review: Stop Comparing it to Mania

So I recently played Sonic Forces on the PS4, and while I did enjoy it, there were some things about it I have to address, as well as some other things around it.

Spoilers contained, so press on if you either finished the story or don’t care about spoilers.

STORY

Alright, so the basic plot is this; Eggman is so fed up with Sonic beating him that he ‘gets serious’ and unleashed a brand new weapon on the world. Sonic is called to action during an attack and this new weapon, named Infinite, goes Brock Lesnar on Sonic and beats him. We’re next told (through text) that Eggman had easily taken over the world with Sonic out of the way, and for the past six months an underground resistance has formed to try and take the world back. So Sonic (who is actually alive, gasp), the Avatar (I’ll get into this later), and Classic Sonic (for whatever reason he’s here too) have to work together to defeat Eggman and bring the world back to peace.

The plot isn’t really groundbreaking, but this is Sonic the Hedgehog, I’m not expecting George RR Martin levels of writing. The plot is simple enough, the dialogue is nice and cheesy (and lacking in any PS2-era Shadow the Hedgehog angst). It’s a dumb little ride and I enjoyed it, even if it was a little short and I would have liked to see more cutscenes instead of text windows.

CHARACTERS

If you ask me, the characters are at their best written and performed in Forces. The voices match the characters perfectly (Vector is up for debate) and their lines are delightfully corny. Eggman has gone back to his roots of ‘legitimate threat who is quite menacing with only a little humour’ instead of the complete joke he’s been presented as for the last few games before. Sonic still has his 90s cool kid wit, and to be honest I’m fine with it. It’s how I know Sonic, and I’d rather have this instead of some bland edgelord. And speaking of bland edgelords, even Shadow is better performed this time, with Kirk Thornton giving him much more emotion and even a few sassy lines here and there in his DLC.

The game’s main villain is Infinite, a jackal who was head of a mercenary squad before turning full on edgelord with (surprisingly cool) virtual reality powers provided by the Phantom Ruby. He’s edgy to the point of parody, and you can tell that’s what the team was going for when creating him, and you can’t help but enjoy the copious amounts of teenage angst that ooze out of him like he was sweating a Simple Plan album.

But the star of the show, and the main selling point of the game, is the Avatar. Your OC. The newest member of the resistance. The Avatar only speaks in vocal grunts, but is actually a very important part of the plot, and the holds the key to defeating Infinite in the form of a Phantom Ruby shard which messes up his powers. I’ll get more into the OC below.

Some levels, when you beat them, will occasionally have an SOS signal coming from them. These are extra missions that require you to either take control of another player’s Avatar or to rescue a fellow resistance member. These aren’t mandatory of course, only for a bit of extra challenge and experience. Bonus levels also pop up depending on how well you do, and you can also beat them for extra accessories. Neato.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay is the standard fair it’s been for the past few instalments, with a lot of Boost2Win, but it’s not nearly as bad as it used to be. Modern Sonic’s levels are quite varied, with different paths depending on how skilled and eagle-eyed you are. Boosting (which is provided by Wisps and defeating enemies in Forces) is a double-edged sword, where you’re penalised for using it in the wrong areas and not paying attention. You can tell when you’re allowed to boost since Wisp pods will be provided, but even then it’s still a blast to just rush through and plow down enemies like toilet roll.

As I mentioned earlier, Classic Sonic is back. I have no idea why they brought him back, but here he is. And to be honest, it’s as shoehorned as it sounds. The gameplay for Classic is pretty janky, with floaty jumps making some parts of platforming difficult to navigate. The speed boost doesn’t last nearly as long from what I’ve noticed, the drowning countdown has shortened to the point where an asthmatic could hold their breath longer than him, and to be honest he slows down from high speed very quickly. I mean I guess he still has the Mania jump dash (oh yeah, forgot to mention this Classic Sonic is the Sonic from Mania, because for some reason they had to tie the two games together).

After beating the first level, you have the opportunity of creating your own character, choosing between a dog, wolf, rabbit, bird, cat, bear, or hedgehog (guess which one is popular amongst kids and memers), with each species actually having its own unique perk, such as birds having a double jump and wolves able to attract nearby rings like a Sonic 3 thunder shield. As you beat levels you collect more clothing and accessories for your donut steel, and achieving S-ranks and completing side missions nets you even more stuff. There’s even an experience system for each species, which gets you even more accessories. The OC controls quite well, with responsive controls and opting for a grappling hook attack instead of a homing attack, and the lack of a jump attack is replaced by Wispons; weaponized Wisps that you can swap out on the fly before each level. There’s a wide variety of Wispons, including Burst that fires a flamethrower attack and allows a frequent jump when powered up, and a lightning one that uses an electric whip attack and lets you use the ring dash. Completing side quests unlocks Wispons with side-effects, including a shield and starting with rings. Changing Wispons is required for different paths and collectables. In some levels, Sonic and the Avatar will team up and you can control between the two simultaneously, combining their powers to create Captain Planet get through different challenges. Some parts include a Double Boost section, which after a quick button mash, lets you plow through enemies while cheesy butt rock cheers you on.

MUSIC

One thing many can agree on is that the only consistently good part about Sonic games is the soundtrack, and Forces is no exception. The theme song, Fist Bump, is a delightfully upbeat and corny butt rock tune that you can’t help but smile when you listen to. Especially if you’re a Hoobastank fan. Infinite’s theme song (named, well, Infinite), performed by Dangerkids, is Ow the Edge in all the best ways. The nu-metal inspired track includes lyrics talking about how cool and awesome Infinite is, and it’s so hilariously catchy that you’ll likely fall in love with it unironically.

Modern Sonic’s music ranges from techno and dubstep-inspired beats to full-on punk rock chords that many fans know the 3D games for. Tempo and tone change depending on which part of the stage you’re on, which I love.

Classic Sonic, which once again goes for a chiptune-feel, is also enjoyable... for the most part. Green Hill’s bleeping goes so high at some points that it’s almost uncomfortable to listen to, but the tunes are all catchy and memorable.

The Avatar’s music, my personal favourite, opts for more techno and D&B inspired tracks, which include lyrics that reflect your poor Coldsteel’s thoughts while rushing through that particular stage. I love these ones, they’re a welcome change and it’s not all the time you get lyrics during an action stage, making me remember the good times of City Escape.

PROS AND CONS

I know I’ve mostly been singing this game’s praises so far, but of course it definitely has its flaws. But the game does try to make up for them.

The story, and the levels, feel far too short compared to previous titles. There are thirty stages, not including bonus levels, and a lot of them feel like they were beaten in a flash. When you know what you’re doing, you can beat most of them in circa 2 minutes each. Granted, the levels were designed by newcomers to the format, and for their (I assume) first go, they did quite well. Plenty of branching paths and secrets to look for, and the secret/bonus levels provide plenty of challenge.

The Avatar creation leaves a bit to be desired, being unable to combine some accessories or change the colour of others, opting for just having a different set colour for the same thing. But again, this is the first time we’ve had this on an official Sonic game, and for the first try, I’m satisfied. Adding side-effects for species and Wispons provides plenty of replay value to make up for the short story.

The villains of the game are made up of Eggman, Infinite, Chaos from Adventure, Zavok from Lost World, Metal Sonic and Shadow. The last four are actually virtual reality projections created by Infinite’s powers, which I thought was a nice twist in the story instead of just having them brainwashed or whatever, but my gripe is you don’t get to fight Chaos or Shadow. It’s a shame, considering how fun they were to fight in previous titles, but the bosses we do have provide fun challenge. The final boss (Eggman in a giant robot, because thank god Eggman is actually the last boss again instead of Infinite hijacking the finale as all-powerful allies of Eggers tend to do) is a three-stage fight compiled of tactics mirroring previous bosses. Though I see this as the previous bosses warming you up for the finale, and the final boss did provide plenty of challenge. And in good Sonic fashion, you’re rewarded for using your abilities carefully and in the right moments in the form of doing more damage and a faster completion time.

FINAL WORD

As short as the main story was, Sonic Forces provides plenty of replay value in the form of extra challenges and character types that challenge you to find all the collectables and get all the S-ranks, which you are rewarded for with more things to bling out your Sonichu with. I still haven’t completely beaten it yet, despite having beaten the story in a few hours. Plus the DLC will be free, and for a AAA title, its RRP is pretty reasonable. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re a fan of the 3D stuff.

Now if we could stop comparing this game to a 2D platformer starring the same character but plays and looks completely differently and was made by a completely different team, that would be lovely.

People aren’t comparing Mario Odyssey to Super Mario Maker, so stop doing it here please.

The courtyard was packed with citizens. Loud music could be heard throughout the whole village. It was a special evening to get together, reflect on the year that is coming to an end, they all wanted to bring on the new year right. At the bar, people sat and carried on a conversation full of laughter, sometimes tears of remembering the tragedies brought upon the village and its people.

A much loved band had been invited to sing, couples, and some small kids (who should really be in bed soon...), joined hand and hand as they danced to the beat of the music.

Okay, I am never wearing these heels again...!

Amy winced as she walked through the crowd to the table that had a huge spread of finger-food, and two bowls of punch. Rubbing shoulders with the occasional villager, she almost reached the table until a blue blur had caused her to lose her balance. Before reaching the ground, two strong arms wrapped around her waist to hold her upright. “Heh... didn’t see ya’ there. You okay?” Their eyes locked for a second, until they inched apart from each other. Sonic stared her down, eyeing over her gorgeous red gown. His lips mouthed the word, “wow” as he slowly admired her.

“Sheesh, Sonic. What’s your hurry?”

“You know me, Ames!” Sonic grinned back, maintaining from saying what exactly what was on his mind right now. “Thought I finally show up for the party before the countdown.”

Amy smiled back, hand on one hip. “Well, it’s your lucky day. Still two more hours until midnight.” She ventured pass him, eyes on the spread of food.

“...Are you sure you’re alright?” At that moment,, the song had changed over to what the crowd was familiar too; so Amy didn’t catch anything he had said. Following her to the table, he inched closer, poking her shoulder. Startling her, she spilled some of her punch back into the punch bowl. Quickly, she turned her head seeing how close Sonic was now.

“Huh?”

“I said... are you alright? You’re limping, Amy.” His left eyebrow raised slightly, looking sincerely concerned.

“Oh...” She laughed in embarrassment. “It’s just my shoes, they really hurt.I’ll be fine...” wincing again, “once I can sit down.”

Sonic snorted. “No one said you couldn’t. C’mon. I’ll grab us a bite to eat and then we can sit over there?” He gestured to the rows of tables just pass the stadium.

Amy took his generous offer and limped off to find her a seat while Sonic filled their plates with food. Taking a deep breath, Amy kicked off her shoes and massaged her feet until the pain subsided somewhat.

After finishing their meal, a male announcer called them over to join the crowd. The explanation was quick and to the point. It was time for a couple’s dance-off! Pair by pair selected couples would be chosen to take the stage to dance in front of the audience. Each couple could pick a song of their choosing. About 6 pairs. The young and even the elderly enjoyed their sweet little dance together before the crowd.

“Okay ladies and gentleman, we have time for one more!” The speaker loudly spoke over the crowd, pointing out across until stopping at Amy. “Everyone, please welcome Sonic and Amy to the dance floor!” Gasps from the crowd could be heard as he encouraged them to dance. With a lot of persuasion Sonic inched closer with Amy to the center with hundreds of people surrounding them. “Any song requests you two?”

The song begun slowly, as they stepped closer. Sonic’s heart was pounding in his chest as their bodies touched, and their gazes locked once more. Drowning in those gorgeous pair of jade eyes looking at him with that same admiration he saw when they first met.

There was a long period of silence when the two stood still, until the crowd roared with an applause. Sonic glanced over at Amy, before quickly running off to grab a drink and disappeared in the crowd. The party events continued on like normal, however, with much more excitement as they were closing in on exactly 5 minutes until the final countdown to the new year.

Everyone was now gathered around the clock tower anxiously waiting for that hand to reach finally the 12. Couples lingered close, not daring to miss that midnight kiss. Amy looked among the group searching for a familiar face with no luck whatsoever. Where had he gone? The dance hadn’t scared him off did it? So many questions left unanswered.

The temperature was dropping Amy confirmed as she shivered and blamed herself for not getting a coat from home earlier. Leaving the group behind, she headed toward the campfire several feet away. However, something... or someone caught her eye. Sonic was standing out on a balcony sipping on a glass of punch. Amy decided to sneak off to join him.

“Hey.”

Sonic’s ear twitched when he heard her voice, whirling around to face Amy. “Yo Ames. Why aren’t ya’ down their with the others?” He looked away, staring down at the villagers.

“I could ask you the same thing. Typically you’re the party-animal.”

“Heheh. Am I... really?”

“Can’t believe it’s almost over.” Sonic muttered as he heard the announcement there were now 2 minutes left. Amy found it odd how solemn he was being, but shrugged it off.

She leaned against him slightly, holding tightly onto the jacket Sonic loaned to her.“it’s been a wild one.”

“You say that isn’t the norm, Ames!” Sonic tsked, nudging her playfully.

She laughed and nudged him back, “okay you win.”

“Score!”

“...Dork.”

10... 9....8....7...6..

Those 10 seconds passed in a blur and soon the crowd roared with cheers as the ball dropped and confetti fell over the villagers. It was time to say farewell to the past, and bring in a whole new beginning.

Sonic cleared his throat, disturbing Amy’s thoughts and causing her to look up at him, waiting to see if he had anything to say. “I-I was meaning to tell you something.” The little twitch of her eyebrow gave him the indication to continue, “...how pretty you looked tonight.” He struggled to speak as a lump in his throat, but she managed to catch every word.

“...Y-you think so?”

“Have I ever lied to you, Ames- Wait. Okay... not a good example.” He rubbed the back of his head, reflecting back on the days he had promised to spend time with her but left her in the dust. Clearly, Amy wasn’t holding that against him.

Amy yawned and stretched, she looked exhausted and so ready to change into her pajamas, wash off her makeup, and hit the hay. “I had a wonderful time, Sonic.” She shrugged off his jacket, and handed it over. “Happy New Year...” She stood on her tiptoes to peck him lightly on the cheek. She was taken by surprise when he grasped her arm tighter, confusion could be read on her face. She opened her mouth, about to speak up... until his lips captured her own. That very second... the world stood still. No noise except for the pounding of their hearts could be heard.

It ended just like that. Her legs now just like jelly after that amazing kiss.

“Happy new year, Ames.” He whispered against her lips. Was he reluctant to pull away? She sure was. Give me a rewind button, please...She pleaded. With a last goodbye, they parted ways.

Whew. It felt nice to write again. I apologize I haven’t been updating my stories lately! Been out of touch. I know it’s several days late but I hope you guys enjoyed this one-shot here. :) The lyrics used is from the song found here.

:: Dear Nicolas Jaar ::

Its one of those days, I’ve just spilled my second pint of water, the first was earlier when I was waking up, lowering myself back into bed to write this letter to you, I called myself a stupid bitch when it happened in lieu of the fact my ex wasn’t there to do it, no shouting resounded or escalation occurred, I was alone. I’m clumsy, I break stuff, knock things over, get caught on women’s scarves on buses, or stuck in my ear phone wires at Tesco’s counters, laugh so loud sometimes that people look at me in shock, a couple of days ago my ex said this to me regarding my angel: “You haven’t scared her off have you? The monies still there?” The final countdown before my exodus has started, its less than a week till I move, less than a week till I, probably, throw the majority of my possessions in the bin. I guess when I mentioned the week had been extraordinary in my Friday letter it might not seem to the typical observer that anything particularly special has taken place but my soul and my state of mind have undergone transformative journeys, spiralling left, right, up and down, through anxiety, heavy almost flabby contentment, absolute jubilation, scuttling fearful tremors, in the gaps between these ferocious states I find myself crying, it’s overwhelming. I filmed a performance on Sunday night that seems to encapsulate my current state, which I’ll go in to more detail about a little later, it charts this emotional instability, despite that not being the plan, within it I am every facet of myself, hopefully it’ll be online by the end of this mammoth admin session I’m undertaking today.

As a performance artist I think thats my schtick, my performances aren’t really so much dedicated enactments but instead just me, raw, frank, channeling all my elements, now I’ve poured over my past in detail to put it all online I notice it’s been the theme throughout my oeuvre.

Right now I’m paralysed, I can’t do anything I normally do, no dressing up, no reading, no flaneurism. I keep getting the bus, I feel a resistance to my usual routes through the city, there’s something painful in the prospect of walking through Victoria or Haggerston park at the moment, I see shadows in the tree’s of these cherished spaces. Shadows of anticipation, shadow’s of love and savagery, shadows of loss. Give me a week and this should all be a memory, a shadow in its own right, at least I hope so.

It need’s to, and will, change dramatically, last time I moved away from my ex things dipped though and my fear is this will happen again. I’m going to have to start balancing my finance’s, something that takes a lot of discipline for me, I have this issue with money, it causes a violent reaction in me when I have it, a physical repulsion, a need to expunge and rid myself of it, like I’ve been overcome by a demon that needs to be exorcised. The concept of accumulating this hateful element fills me with dread and desire, which must somehow in part explain why I’m so useless at selling what I create and pushing my wares on people.

There’s this absurd sense of nobility coursing through my veins, I see it in my father as well, I find it the whole concept of marketing myself and pushing myself on others scandalous, I’d much prefer people come to me of their own free will, heart and soul aligned. In a society where the normality is to be the sum of our buying power I feel a sense of pride in this, so much is being sold to us on various levels of our consciousness, cookies, buses swathed in posters, soundcloud adverts, asos emails, suggested everything, marketing is the very air we breath, especially in a metropolis where the eyeline is never not inundated with messages of potential happiness, just a tap away.

But thats not to say I’m not happy to share, that must already be clear in these letters, all my insides are out and on display in various walled gardens across the internet. This sale is just causing me a lot of internal bleeding, now I’ve catalogued the 190+ items it incorporates and uploaded them, I’m drowning, how do I rid myself of these objects in a diligent and respectful way? The restful mornings of self guided education have been replaced by incessant letters to you (these are important for giving this whole thing a soul), answering messages, nagging, tagging, planning, photographing, uploading, editing, despairing, the saving grace of this upward struggle is that I’m allowing myself to do yoga and categorise it by writing everything to you, I need soul food right now.

As an example this is my to do list today:

* make 6x animations / 6x written pieces / 6x mini videos from pre recorded footage to upload on to instagram (this has been on the list for days, it keeps getting pushed back)

* go to studio, take more detail shots of items I want to put on ebay as this will increase their chances of being sold, items on list include my wedding ring, larger paintings, designer clothes then come home, pay my ebay fee’s so my access is unrestricted and upload everything including necessary details – then post this to my social media accounts

*promote my sale on facebook by linking from twitter and poss instagram, adding to community groups, messaging friends

* pay rent to my studio’s then email them to ask about my move and if I will need to hire a skip

* type up this letter, post to facebook and screenshot, post to twitter, tag you

*answer and correspond with all the beautiful people that are messaging me about the sale, answer questions, like comments and reply

* edit the film I made on Sunday, render, upload to youtube, share on social media platforms, post on my site

* eat? drink?

* do yoga

* wash hair?

* put together synopsis and brief for arts programme I am curating for a meeting tomorrow, consolidate the idea

This is the bare bones of my itinerary, I’ve done 2 of the tasks so far, I know its not unusual for a Londoner to be so busy and I bet your schedule looks like this sometimes, but really I’d just like to crawl in to bed and read and write a little and then fall asleep. This is probably the apex of my project now and there will be a brief reprieve, but before I cast everything asunder I have to do my life some justice so I’m not cursing myself in future years, and I’m working for the next 4 days, 12 hour shifts nearly daily so its the last push before the major haul the beginning of next week.

Relentlessness.

So then…. Part 3 // Sunday

On Sunday night I filmed myself performing for 6 hours plus, by all rights is was as demanding as the mermaid descent, but it was impromptu, I wasn’t naked, covered in paint, fucking 2 cucumbers, so it didn’t quite have the same edge.

I came to on the studio of my floor rolled up in a blanket on a duvet cover I use as a rug of sorts, thick white make up and glitter caked in my eyes, permanent wine coloured lip stick still reverberating over my lips. I’d passed out re-watching the footage I’d taken of myself staging 7 scene’s, dressed in variously important pieces from my wardrobe, singing some of the my most treasured songs, or stumbling over them in the case of witness the fitness by roots manuva. In the background the sonic landscape was shaped by various mixes of yours I’ve found on soundcloud, bleating from my i phone speakers.

Firstly I crawled around the central space in a turquoise swimming costume, shooting myself coming towards the camera from various angles, trying to make creative use of the runway like black borders which are the echoes of the descent installation. Then I shimmied and pulsated in terracotta sequins, attempting to channel my inner seductress, envisaging jessica rabbit, whilst adorning myself in the bloodletting costume pieces. Following that I hit things with ping pong bats and comically attempted to mc, stumbling over gorgeous lyrics and twerking in my adidas, I was with the mermaids for this and I’m sure they were silently mocking me. Next the black lipstick and adventure time sweatshirt were paraded around, as a backdrop to me turning myself into a human display case, though the actual performance was probably the best. I then threw on my big white shirt (not the alexander wang, but the one I wore to my little brothers wedding), I hugged the unicorn, blew bubbles and sang behind acrylic glass. The penultimate scene saw me dress in preppy tan vintage adidas shorts and a pink silk bomber, clumsily adorning myself in all my jewellery and gratingly bursting through lyrics. Finally at 2am I somehow managed to strap myself in to my wedding dress, read a harrowing letter from my teenage self and blurrily cry through the lyrics of one of the most potent songs I’ve ever met. But I didn’t pass out in my wedding dress, though that’d be a more aesthetic turn.

The film is as if you’re watching a young girl raid her mums jewellery and clothes collection and film herself in her bedroom, except this girl has the weight of adulthood clearly marked on her shoulders. The developed pains of experience, etched on her face. Having your mixes as a background noise wasn’t intended that night, and in a way it really detracts from my singing, but I was all alone in my studio building and having your music on made me feel less scared.

It might be that I could of made better use of my time on a more organised aspect of this project, but these performances are the legacy of my life thus far, I’m manically creating them as documentation, because very soon it will all be gone. I want proof for myself that it did all really exist, and it was beautiful.

That video should be uploaded later today.

Customize Any Vehicle

To customize any non-customizable vehicle, take any customizable vehicle into Rim Jobs, and press Y. Go to “Garage” in the menu, and highlight a vehicle that is not customizable from your list, but do not press the button to retrieve it. Instead, press B to back out of the menu, and can then select “Accept” to confirm the exit. It will now take you directly to the customizing menu and then there you go (note) you can not add kneecapers or rims it will mess up.

Immortal Genki

When standing around waiting for my bank account to increase, I noticed about after an hour that professor Genki showed up. He was hitting pedestrians and “disturbing the peace”, I decided to hit him with the Apoca-Fist (which is always one hit and they disintegrate). Not only did he take 5 hits to kill, but when I did he had approximately $350,000 dollars on him (I can’t guarantee for sure how much he had on him but I went from $3,000 plus $96,000 from my bank to $450,000 with out doing anything else, I can’t confirm that money was from him but I can confirm I did nothing else to earn it). This was done right next to the “Rim Jobs” in Yearwood (owned by the Luchadores) and i’m not sure whether it will work anywhere else.

Flying Jet Ski

You need the invincible pack (DLC) and satchel charges. Then get a jet ski. And throw the satchel charges behind you. Note: also you need type the vehicle no damage or else the jet ski will explode.

How To Change The Deckers Outfit

When you unlock the deckers outfit go to wardrobe and save it as an outfit type:TechPolice. First its green and when you put it on it purple.

When Gone Wrong

When something bad happens, like when the cops or gang gets you down to the point where you are about to die, don’t worry about it! Call up Shonda or one of your homies. If that doesn’t work don’t drive all over town because they will kill you. Go to one of your local or homes with your homies/ gang members, they kill while you chill then give it a minute. If they are still there, go in your garage or house and do something, then they will leave.

Ultimate Zombie Apocalypse (FOR NOW!!)

Before you do this, go to your crib and get at least one saint on your side. Now type in the zombie cheat which is “brains”. Then fight off the endless infected for as long as you can! (NOTE: If you have unlimited health on, it won’t be fun enough! ) Enjoy!

Invincibility

Reach level 50 and gain about $5 million by entering the [whatitmeanstome] code and activating it between 10 to 20 times. Then go to the ‘Character Abilities’ screen and buy ALL the fall, fire, bullet, explosion, and vehicle strike damage reduction options until it reaches ‘Never take damage’. You will now be invincible from ALL damage. A glitch has been known to occur and you may still die if you crash with an aircraft or are in a normal vehicle and are run over by a tank.
