COVID isn’t just a fucking cold like right-wingers say. It still fucking kills. It ruined a poor kitty’s life, making it so she had to get shots every single day, and it killed her. “Just a cold,” my ass.

The poor owner had to sell her belongings, and furniture to even pay for this kitty’s treatment. And now the owner is left without her kitty. This is serious.

Yes, I know how it negatively impacts disabled people—oh, I sure as hell know it personally—but I can’t fathom the fact that people act like this is nothing. What happened to this kitty is real.

yes, doctors suck, but also "the medical ethics and patient interaction training doctors receive reinforces ableism" and "the hyper competitive medical school application process roots out the poor, the disabled, and those who would diversify the field" and "anti-establishment sentiment gets applications rejected and promotions requests denied, weeding out the doctors on our side" and "the gruesome nature of the job and the complete lack of mental health support for medical practitioners breeds apathy towards patients" and "insurance companies often define treatment solely on a cost-analysis basis" and "doctors take on such overwhelming student loan debt they have no choice but to pursue high paying jobs at the expense of their morals" are all also true

none of this absolves doctors of the truly horrendous things they say and do to patients, but it's important to acknowledge that rather than every doctor being coincidentally a bad person, there is something specific about this field and career path that gives rise to such high prevalence of ableist attitudes

The lockers are real, but they're not useful.

(I think they were once useful, but that was when they were big. I think they were shrunk to avoid the shoved-in-locker incidents we hear of in the ancient tales?)

A modern American locker is perhaps half as wide as your shoulders, and perhaps four times as tall as it is wide, and is typically stacked on (or under) a similarly sized locker. Logistically, this presents a challenge when accessing the locker, as it means that you have four person's-worth of locker in one person's-worth of space; or rather, four people accessing their lockers at the same time may have to do so while all attempting to occupy the same space.

(even electrons can only occupy two-to-a-spot; the American educational system is not known for its rigid adherence to scientific plausibility)

Should you manage to reach over (or crawl under) your compatriots to actually reach your locker, you will find that it is precisely too small to fit your middle-est textbook, even when inserted at an angle. You will just have to carry your larger textbooks with you at all times.

You will, in fact, have to carry all of your textbooks with you at all times. The so-called "passing period" between classes has been progressively shrunk, in attempt to prevent students from "loitering", "speaking to their friends", or "having a moment of peace". You will not have time to swap out your books at your locker; God Help You if you need to visit the bathroom or travel to a classroom on the far side of the school.

(I think I gave up on my locker after less than a year; after that I just carried everything, everywhere. This is why american kids have such big backpacks)

'Standing at your locker talking to your friends' exists only in TV and movies, as a narrative convenience.

it's been a while

illario as the grandchild that is most like caterina is something i'm loving to chew on. the grandson that took her lessons to heart the most. kill anyone who sees your face and knows your name, "we are not revolutionaries", the first out of the two to prioritise the contract. power at any cost, and the only one to lean into the unnecessary abuse that their grandmother told them was tradition. why is anyone surprised he allied with the venatori? and then there's illario's considerable skill in infiltration and manipulating any mark, he has always had the charisma that lucanis lacked. illario isn't attached, he has/can/will use someone and immediately drop them; "that does free me from promises i don't intend to keep". he can lie about how much he cares so well that he fools a magister into believing he loves her. he kills zara without hesitation to cover his own tracks, meanwhile lucanis blindly promises a young girl in the middle of a siege that he will help her find her father. even the lessons about family stick with him, and in this entire messy power struggle, he never actually orders anyone to directly kill caterina or lucanis, not until he's backed into a corner.

and even after all that. despite even lucanis believing illario should be first talon, lucanis is still the better killer. illario is not strong enough to be the brutal assassin caterina needs him to be. so when lucanis seems to fill the role his mother left, grief and love for her dead heir apparent remains, and any of the other qualities caterina needs in her next talon doesn't matter. whatever his mother was, lucanis has to be. what illario does doesn't matter, because he will always be second best to caterina's memory of her favored daughter.
