So with the pandora's box of AI being released into the world, cybersecurity has become kind of insane for the average user in a way that's difficult to describe for those who aren't following along. Coding in unfamiliar languages is easier to do now, for better and worse. Purchasable hacking "kits" are a thing on the dark web that basically streamline the process of deploying ransomware. And generative AI is making it much easier for more and more people to obscure their intentions and identities, regardless of their tech proficiency.

The impacts of this have been Really Bad in the last year or two in particular. For example:

(I'm about to link to sources, and you better be hovering and checking those links before clicking on them as a habit)

Ransomware attacks have become increasingly lucrative for private and state-sponsored hacking groups, with at least one hack recently reported to have resulted in a $75 MILLION payout from the victim. This in combination with the aforementioned factors has made it a bigger and bigger risk for companies and organizations holding your most sensitive data.

In the US, the Salt Typhoon hack over the past year or so has compromised virtually all major phone networks--meaning text and phone calls are no longer secure means of communication. While this won't affect most people in day-to-day, it does make basically all the information you share over traditional phone comms very vulnerable. You should avoid sharing sensitive information over the phone when you can.

CISA updated their security recommendations late last year in response to this compromise. One of the recommendations is to use a separate comms app with end-to-end encryption. I personally prefer Signal, since it's open source and not owned by Meta, but the challenge can be getting people you know on the same service. So... have fun with that.

2FA is no longer as secure as it was--because SMS itself is no longer secure, yeah, but even app-based 2FA has been rendered useless in certain circumstances. One reason for this is because...

A modern version of the early-2000's trick of gaining access to people's accounts via hijacked cookies has come back around for Chromium browsers, and hackers are gaining access to people's Google accounts via OAuth session hijacking. Meaning they can get into your already-logged-in accounts without passwords or 2FA even being needed to begin with. This has been achieved both through hackers compromising chrome browser extensions, and via a reinvigorated push to send out compromising links via email.

Thanks to AI, discerning compromised email is harder now. Cybercriminals are getting better at replicating legitimate email forms and website login screens etc., and coming up with ways to time the emails around times when you might legitimately expect them. (Some go so far as to hack into a person's phone to watch for when a text confirmation might indicate a recent purchase has been made via texted shipping alerts, for example)

If you go to a website that asks you to double-click a link or button--that is a major red flag. A potential method of clickjacking sessions is done via a script that has to be run with the end user's approval. Basically, to get around people who know enough to not authenticate scripts they don't recognize, hackers are concealing the related pop ups behind a "double-click" prompt instruction that places the "consent" prompt's button under the user's mouse in disguised UI, so that on the second click, the user will unwittingly elevate the script without realizing they are doing it.

Attachments are also a fresh concern, as hackers have figured out how to intentionally corrupt key areas of a file in a way that bypasses built-in virus check--for the email service's virus checker as well as many major anti-virus installed on endpoint systems

Hackers are also increasingly infiltrating trusted channels, like creating fake IT accounts in companies' Office 365 environment, allowing them to Teams employees instead of simply email them. Meaning when IT sends you a new PM in tools like Zoom, Slack, or Teams, you need to double-check what email address they are using before assuming it's the real IT person in question.

Spearphishing's growing sophistication has accelerated the theft of large, sensitive databases like the United/Change Healthcare hacks, the NHS hack & the recent Powerschool hack. Cybercriminals are not only gaining access to emails and accounts, but also using generative AI tools to clone the voices (written and spoken) of key individuals close to them, in order to more thoroughly fool targets into giving away sensitive data that compromises access to bigger accounts and databases.

This is mostly being used to target big-ticket targets, like company CSO's and other executives or security/IT personnel. But it also showcases the way scammers are likely to start trying to manipulate the average person more thoroughly as well. The amount of sensitive information--like the health databases being stolen and sold on the darkweb--means people's most personal details are up for sale and exploitation. So we're not too far off from grandparents being fooled by weaponized AI trained off a grandchild's scraped tiktok videos or other public-facing social media, for example. And who is vulnerable to believing these scams will expand, as scammers can potentially answer sensitive questions figured out from stolen databases, to be even more convincing.

And finally, Big Tech's interest in replacing their employees with AI to net higher profits has resulted in cybersecurity teams who are overworked, even more understaffed they already were before, and increasingly lacking the long-term industry experience useful to leading effective teams and finding good solutions. We're effectively in an arms race that is burning IT pros out faster and harder than before, resulting in the circumvention of crucial QA steps, and mistakes like the faulty release that created the Crowdstrike outage earlier last year.

Most of this won't impact the average person all at once or to the same degree big name targets with potential for big ransoms. But they are little things that have combined into major risks for people in ways that aren't entirely in our control. Password security has become virtually obsolete at this point. And 2FA's effectiveness is tenuous at best, assuming you can maintain vigilance.

The new and currently best advice to keeping your individual accounts secure is to switch to using Passkeys and FIDO keys like Yubikeys. However, the effectiveness of passkeys are held back somewhat as users are slow to adopt them, and therefore websites and services are required to continue to support passwords on people's accounts anyway--keeping password vulnerabilities there as a back door.

TLDR; it's pretty ugly out there right now, and I think it's going to get worse before it gets better. Because even with more sophisticated EDR and anti-virus tools, social engineering itself is getting more complex, which renders certain defensive technologies as somewhat obsolete.

Try to use a passkey when you can, as well as a password locker to create strong passwords you don't have to memorize and non-SMS 2FA as much as possible. FIDO keys are ideal if you can get one you won't lose.

Change your passwords for your most sensitive accounts often.

Don't give websites more personal info about yourself than is absolutely necessary.

Don't double-click links or buttons on websites/captchas.

Blood.

John woke with a start to the familiar smell of blood. His brain went into overdrive thinking of all the horrible things that could have happened to you. He sat up quickly, instinctively scanning the room for threats before his eyes landed on you, reminding himself you're still there with him.

He didn't see any blood. Was he imagining it? It certainly wouldn't be the first time something like that happened.

He pulled the sheets off him so he could get up and investigate further, and that's when he saw it.

Understanding came crashing down on him in an instant, his fight or flight response that gripped his mind slowly calming.

He silently climbed out of your shared bed, going to your side to gently shake you awake. You stirred a little before feeling the all too familiar blood between your legs and the cramps that came with it.

You were wide awake now, alert to your situation.

"Hey, it's okay," he spoke calmy, "I've gotten my fair share of blood on things. Happens."

You tried to chuckle at his comforting humor, but the pain you felt made it difficult. John noticed the shift in your expression, but being married to you as long as he had made his reaction second nature.

"Stay here," he said, getting up, "I'm starting a bath."

"You don't have to," you started. John just looked back at you, this being the only time he would use a semi-stern look on you while raising his hand in a stop motion.

"Stay."

You smiled at his antics. When you were together at first, humor from John was rare. But as you got closer, he was able to open up the playful side of him the war had almost made him forget.

When he was finished, he came back to the you scooping you up bridal style and bringing you to the bathroom, your laughs warming his heart.

He got you settled before leaving you to relax, the lights dimmed and the small open window bringing fresh forest air into the room.

By the time you got out and dressed in the cozy pjs John left in the bathroom, the bed had already been stripped and remade, the smell of fresh sheets relaxing you further.

John walked in, and without hesitation, he scooped you up again and put you on the bed.

"I'll be right back," he said, his voice still gravely from waking up.

You nodded, prompting him to turn and walk out of the room. You got yourself settled, nestling yourself in the fresh blankets. Your eyes widened seeing John coming back in with your favorite snacks in hand, setting them down next to you.

As he sat on his side of the bed, you leaned over to give him a hug.

"Thank you," you whispered.

"You're welcome," he murmured as he looked down at you, "I'll always help you."

He shifted into a more comfortable position behind you, letting you rest your head on his chest. You stayed like that for a few minutea, talking and joking before your cramps flared up out of nowhere.

John immediately noticed your change, calmly moving his hand to your lower abdomen. The heat was a nice change, subtly soothing your pain, but it was like throwing a pebble at a bear.

You perked up.

"Always."

"First let me tell you, it was all Ortega's idea. He was always coming up with dumb schemes," he started. As his story went on, you focused less on the pain as it came and went, turning into a dull ache that was pushed to the back of your mind.

You softly laughed as he told you about the duck they captured, how it caused a ruckus but they tried to hide it from Trautman (to no avail), then how it attacked Ortega, leading to a lasting phobia of ducks from then on.

"Ortega would face down a tiger, but a duck? He swore they were the meanest animal to grace the earth."

You let yourself laugh, now that your cramps had calmed down.

"Why did you let him go through with it? Better yet, why did you help him?" you chuckled.

"Didn't think it would go that badly," John replied.

You stayed silent for a minute, just thinking to yourself while John rested his head back against the headboard, closing his eyes

"Thank you," you said softly breaking the silence. You turned around to see your husband squint an eye open to look at you. "For the distraction," you clarified, "It worked."

"Best pain reliever I know about," John said, closing his eyes again.

You decided to do the same, shutting your eyes and letting your whole body relax into the love of your life as sleep slowly took over.

im taking this as an opportunity to talk about a scene in sai that i really wanna yamble about for no reason. how the concept of fealty works in soilaila.

essentially, the way to honour someone in soilailan custom is to bow your head, sometimes get on one knee depending on how much you respect them, and place your hand/fist over your magic bladder. it originates from the concept that from doing that, you would draw/claw the magic out of your organ and siphon it into the person you're swearing fealty to, so when they return it, it is sworn by your oath. anyhow, that's not done anymore as it was the dragons who started that custom, but the gesture still remains.

once you swore fealty to von doro, depending on your degree of magical proficiency, you'd rather be granted a title, or simply indebted to her service/loyalty. if you were a master in a family or close to (closeness only works for arcanics since there is no such thing as master of the arcane... teehee... yet.), you'd get the title "Elder". if you weren't a master but you were selected for von doro's courts, you'd be given the title jervee. if you became her jer'vazir, same deal. you didn't enter her courts without fealty though. you also couldn't be a limious without swearing fealty, which is why it is curious that hilbert was able to break his.

anyhow... von doro tries to force alan to swear fealty to her in sai's climax. spoiler alert lol the filter is gone.

both reigen and teru are ... a little distant with mob as soon as they see that he's a zombie, mostly out of fear of getting bitten, but also just... genuine grief and uncertainty on how to move forward

after just a few days of spending time with him though, they both see a Lot of mob in him, and like i said in that other ask a while ago, they Start To Believe. teru is a lot quicker to warm up to mob, and a lot more willing to get near him sooner than reigen. he misses hugging mob a lot, but he doesn't dare try for a while

when he Does get comfortable touching mob, and when mob seems unbothered by it, he kinda goes full swing into it and reverts back to his old clingy self. mob never seems to mind, though he doesn't do it back except for basic hugs. and also the handshake <3

teru Is a bit starved for returned affection—he desperately wishes mob could like .. compute that and Realize that and at least Attempt to do it back. he misses talking to him, and holding conversations, and seeing him smile. teru misses his smile a lot—he doesn't seem to smile as a zombie

reigen is frankly fuckin devastated bc he's rly not one to believe in a cure (at first, anyway) and this right here feels like a Fraction of what mob used to be, so it's rly rly hard to look at the kid and not get upset about what he Could be looking at instead, had reigen had a better handle on the kageyama's whereabouts when they got separated

reigen calls him "mob" out of instinct and mob, despite going a full year without hearing that name once, instantly turns to reigen in response, attentive. he thinks it's a fluke at first, but over time as it happens again and again he realizes that Yeah, mob recognizes that name and knows reigen is talking to Him specifically, and mob is trying to listen. it's a small piece of proof, for him, that mob is there

when reigen gets more comfy with the circumstances, he settles back into old habits. he ruffles mob's hair and the first time it happens mob looks comically bemused and he like.blinks several times like What The Hell Was That but the second time he does it he seems to recall the sensation and leans into the touch

HILARIOUS to think about mob latching onto old memories, and occasionally he'll stand next to reigen and hold his hand out. and reigen kinda stares at him, a little lost as to why, and on instinct reigen just kinda puts whatever he's holding atm in mob's palms and he seems satisfied w that and simply walks away ???? idk How long it takes him to recognize that mob is holding his hands out waiting to be paid, but it's gonna be hilarious when he realizes it . his memories r rough atm so he doesn't rly remember What he's waiting for, so when reigen gives him literally anything he thinks "ah, that must be it" and carries on.

teru and reigen don't realize it, but tome and ritsu catch on quite quickly—mob actually seems happier, after the reunion ! tome mentions that shigeo seems kinda chipper lately, and more alert, more talkative. ever since seeing teru and reigen again, sections of that rusty brain have turned back online to rifle through memories, and even though it's a little hard to tell, they can see it in his eyes, The Joy

makes ritsu think a lil bit. ritsu had sorta defaulted to the idea that mob didn't recall ever being with teru or reigen to begin with, beforehand. he's not sure why he came to this conclusion—he just never rly thought abt it too hard, over everything else to consider

makes him wonder if mob had been quietly mourning teru and reigen this whole time, quietly missing them, but never having the ability to show it or vocalize it, even to ritsu. or if it's like an out-of-sight, out-of-mind thing, where mob didn't rly think about them until they appeared in front of them, and now he's happy they're here. it's hard to tell

Solar Storms Are Driving Farmers Crazy

Planting season is a hectic time for farmers. For many, it means working through the night using GPS-guided tractors to plant thousands of acres in a short period of time. The season was in full swing on May 10, 2024, when the biggest solar storm in decades struck Earth.

"Our tractors acted like they were demon possessed," says Elaine Ramstad, a Spaceweather.com reader and aurora chaser who helps out on a family farm in Northern Minnesota. "All my cousins called me during the May 10th storm to tell me that 'my auroras' were driving them crazy while they were planting."

Modern farmers rely heavily on GPS. Guided by satellites, smart tractors can work around the clock, seeding perfectly straight rows with precise amounts of seed and fertilizer. When harvesting time comes, the tractors can return to exactly the same spots to pick the crops.

This kind of precision agriculture has become widespread. "I would guess 80% or more of all farmers in the Midwest use at least basic GPS for something--whether it's auto-steer or yield mapping," says Ethan Smidt, a service manager for John Deere. "At least 50% of all farmers are VERY reliant on GPS and use it on every machine all year long."

Solar activity poses a growing problem for farm-tech. During big solar storms, a layer of Earth's atmosphere called "the ionosphere" fills with bubbles, waves, and turbulence, which severely distort radio signals from GPS satellites. Sometimes tractors and harvesters can't lock on, which stops them in their tracks. Or the signal may be garbled, causing them to juke back and forth.

May 10th wasn't the end of it. Tractors went off-course again during the autumnal storms of Oct. 6th and 10th.

Ramstad was helping her cousins defoliate sugar beets on Oct. 6th when her tractor started acting up: "As the aurora activity began, my GPS was off by close to a foot. Twice while on Autosteer, the tractor danced a row to the left, to the right — and then the defoliator was off a row, so I had to  loop around and start over. By nightfall, there was no controlling the Autosteer."

Indiana farmer Michael Spencer had a similar experience: "This fall was the first time I was able to see the aurora. My hair was standing on end from the beauty, however, it did make the John Deere tech dance. When the storms were strongest around Oct. 7th, my tractor's Autosteer system would 'jump the line'--meaning, the tractor would make a quick jolt left or right and I would have to manually reset."

It doesn't take an historic solar storm to cause problems. While the May 10th storm was a rare and extreme category G5, storms in October were much more common category G3 and G4 events. All of them sent massive pieces of hardware off course.
