till the sunâs seeing through my eyes (yumark)
ace me outÂ

Yuta and Mark are next-door neighbors who grew up together, joined at the hip until Yuta went off to college. Due to their four-year age gap, Mark's freshman year at the same school marks the halfway point of an unprecedented amount of time apart. Yuta is sure he can handle it, until Mark's arrival home for spring break makes him wonder if the fondness he has for his friend might be blooming quite literally into something stronger. It's up to him to handle the consequences.

âSunny,â Yuta reckoned, was the word most often used to describe both him and Mark â if in profoundly different ways. Â Yutaâs favorite season was summer, so it followed that he should be like the summer sun: bright, intense, and all-consuming. Â Mark, on the other hand, favored fall, and sometimes reminded Yuta of early autumn sunshine: soft in its glow, yet surprisingly bold.
It wasnât summer when Yuta started feeling shortness of breath for the first time; it wasnât fall, either. Â It was in early March, during the part of spring where no one can agree if the world still feels like winter or if itâs beginning to thaw. Â The thaw was usually something Yuta savored; the slow sensation of sunshine gingerly gracing his skin for the first time in months. Â Sure, the winter sun was a welcome reprieve from the townâs usual snow and rain-induced gloom, but even when it came out, Yuta had a hard time feeling it. Â It was the difference between being touched by bare hands and being touched through gloves. Â Early March was when that transition usually occurred, along with the first appearances of crocuses and daffodils in Yutaâs garden, and he had always relished it; relished the lead-up to his favorite season and how that seemed to elongate it. Â Since last year though, Yuta wasnât sure what he thought about spring anymore â if he could still trust it. Â It was almost exactly a year ago after all â last March â that Yukhei had nearly let himself die of hanahaki.
No, the first time Yuta felt an unusual shortness of breath was after soccer practice on March 6th, the day Mark Lee came home for spring break. Â The sun was peeking through the clouds and glittering off the distant coast as Yuta kicked the ball around with Kun, whoâd met up with him in the park off Main Street once Yutaâd finished running the local junior high soccer team through some drills. Â Yuta had played intramurally while studying anthropology at the college a half hour away, as well as participating in several dance troops, and since he was only a year out of school, he still considered himself a relatively fit person, even if he was known to gorge on the Seo familyâs matcha and azuki bean muffins until he could barely walk. Â Thatâs why he found it so odd when he ran for the ball, which Kun had kicked particularly hard and far, and felt like the air was being yanked from his lungs like a chair being pulled from under him.
He kicked it back, his body flailing wildly, and collected himself, hands on his knees and upper body heaving, bent over. Â Maybe he was developing asthma, he thought. Â Heâd heard of that happening to people nearly at random and with no history of the ailment. Â He would have to make himself something for that.
âYou okay?â called Kun, stopping the ball quickly and jogging over to his friend.
âYeah Iâm good,â Yuta responded, peering up at Kun sideways and flashing him his most blinding grin. Â âI just felt a little weird for a sec.â
Yuta gazed past Kun, noticing a figure moving on the edge of the field. Â Was that â
âMark?â he yelled, heaving one more time before allowing himself to return to standing. Â Kun wheeled around, looking elated, and sure enough, the figure raised both arms in greeting, breaking into a run.
âIâm baaaaack!â said Mark. Â Yuta thought he looked older, even, than he had over his winter break, wearing jeans and a brown herringbone bomber jacket, black hair parting down the middle to fall over a pair of round wire glasses. Â He looked like a city boy for some reason, not a conservation major from the countryside. Â Yuta practically tackled Mark in a hug, trying to absorb his friendâs smaller frame as Kun looked on in amusement. Â A grey cloud floated overhead, obscuring the tentative sun and making Yuta shiver. Â When he pulled away, he indulged in a look of performative hurt, unzipping his pocket and pulling his phone out just to confirm what he already suspected; sure enough, there were no notifications.
âHow dare you, Mark Lee!â he accused, pointing his finger in Markâs face and leaning forward so Mark felt the need to lean back in response. Â âHow could you not tell me you were coming home today?â
Mark broke into a body-racking fit of giggles. Â âIâm not allowed to give you a nice surprise?â
Yuta huffed in lieu of an answer and pointed at Kun. Â âWas he involved?â
âMark texted me earlier and asked if I could find you and detain you for him,â Kun confirmed, and Yuta glared.
âWhatever. Â Markie, you caught me so unprepared! Â I hope you know I wonât forgive you.â Â But that was a lie. Â Yuta had already forgiven Mark the ambush, if it required forgiving at all, and Mark knew this because the moment heâd schooled his laughing (which was no small feat) he sighed through a tight-lipped smile, eyes so big under his glasses and full of familiar warmth.
âItâs good to see you too, man,â Mark said, adding, âand Kun also. Â Thanks for being my co-conspirator.â
Now that heâd processed, Yuta realized how giddy he was. Â His best friend was back for a few weeks and they could do whatever they wanted; make spring sweet like it used to be. Â He shuffled a bit on his feet as his enthusiasm boiled over, pushing thoughts of asthma out. Â He slung an arm over Markâs neck and started walking towards the rest of town while Kun went to fetch the ball like the responsible person heâd always been.
âUgh, why canât you just graduate already?â Yuta whined to Mark. Â âI mean weâve already gone through this once when I was gone! It hasnât even been a year yet and Iâm already sick of you being away!â
Mark chuckled.  âThanks?â he said.  âBut you can always come visit me, dude, like you already haveâŚâ
Yuta shook his head, petulant. Â There were moments he thanked his lucky stars that his friends put up with his shit, and this was one of them. Â âNot the same,â he explained. Â âDonât like sharing.â
Mark spluttered.
âAnyway!â Yuta diverted when Kun rejoined them, âDo you want to come over to mine this evening so we can catch up? Â Kun, youâre invited too of course along with the others, who I can shoot a text too although it might be a LITTLE LAST MINUTE, you know? Â That could have been avoided, but alas.â Â Yuta cleared his throat as his friends laughed indulgently. Â âBut yeah, Iâm in the barn these days, so we can have a little shindig. Â What do you say?â Â Â
âThat sounds awesome!â said Mark. Â âJust gotta check with my parents, but I donât think thatâll be an issue.â
Yuta rolled his eyes and scoffed in mock disdain.  âUnderclassmenâŚâ
They emerged from the park onto Main Street and Kun excused himself to check on the coffeeshop, promising to be at Yutaâs whenever they decided the gathering would be. Â Yuta turned to Mark.
âI have a couple errands I have to run in town before I go home, and then I need to get ready, so while Iâm doing that you can go and make sure you have permission to be out after dark.â
Mark laughed, flustered. Â That was one of the plethora of reasons he tended to laugh; the others ranging from fear to disgust to joy. Â âAlright, Yuta,â he agreed. Â âIâll see you tonight. Â Canât wait to be back with the gang; well â minus Johnny, I guess. Â Anyway, can I get another hug?â
Yuta grabbed Mark before the request had been fully uttered, rocking him back and forth and groaning in a way he thought only appropriate considering the tightness of his squeezing.
âWhatever you want, Markie,â Yuta teased before letting his friend go. Â âSee you tonight.â Â And with that Mark was backing away down the street and towards their neighborhood, giving Yuta a dorky little salute when heâd gone far enough to warrant turning around. Â Yuta shuddered as he watched Mark leave, the cool tinge of early spring evening setting in against his exposed arms. Â It was already 4:30 and the previous sunshine was diffusing into a blue tint over everything in sight. Â The shade reminded Yuta of the hour in summer when fireflies usually made their first appearances. Â If only it were warmer.
On his way down Main, Yuta stopped into the herbalistâs before the shop closed, finding Kunhang manning it, himself home for break. Â A little bell jingled as the door opened and shut and Kunhang lifted his head from where it had been settled lazily against the metal counter.
âYuutaaa,â he called, âwhat do you need?â
âHey Kunhang,â he greeted, âdo you guys have any black seed? Â Iâm all out.â
Kunhang reached under his desk and rummaged around, emerging with an empty jar about the size of a single serving of yogurt. Â âSure thing,â he said, turning around and tracing his eyes and pointer finger over labels upon labels until he found the one for the product he was looking for. Â âHere we go. Â Whatâs it for?â
Yuta shrugged, fishing for his wallet. Â âJust a little chest tightness. Â Think I exercised too much today. Â Iâm an old man, you know.â
Kunhang turned back around, jar of black granules in hand, and placed it on a small metal scale. Â âYouâre the furthest thing from an old man I can think of, but alright.â He said, then named the price. Â Yuta laughed at Kunhangâs comment and exchanged a few bills for his purchase, which Kunhang had packed for him in a lavender-colored paper bag folded over at the top.
âYou close at five?â Yuta asked, loitering a few feet from the door. Kunhang nodded. Â âPerfect. Â You know Markâs back?â
âI heard,â said Kunhang, settling his elbows back on the counterâs copper top. Â âBut I havenât had time to see him yet. Â I donât think he knows I work here now.â
âWell, Iâm trying to have a get-together tonight at my place to celebrate. Â Iâll send out details soon I think.â
Kunhang looked pleasantly surprised. Â âOh! Thatâs awesome!â he said. âIâll definitely be there. Â Is it, like â what kind of get-together?â
Yuta chuckled and Kunhangâs expression hinted at embarrassment.  College kids⌠  Â
âItâll be chill, but Iâm cool with BYOB if you have something in mind. Â I have a few herbal liqueurs Iâve been wanting a reason to break out, anyway.â
âSweet,â said Kunhang. Â âSee you tonight, I guess.â
Yuta let himself out with a chiming of the bell. Â âI hope so!â
Next stop was Taeyongâs flower shop.  Yuta steadied himself before crossing the street, breath hitching again strangely at his trachea.  He cleared his throat, trying to fight the mild jolt of terror it gave him not knowing what was wrong.  It was as if when he drew air into his lungs, a small fraction of it transformed into something else that he couldnât breathe.  It wasâŚstrange; there was no other way of describing it.  He pitched forward a bit and forced himself to take a full breath to calm his nerves.  Heâd been conditioned by his soccer coaches his whole life not to catch his breath in this position, but now that he was actually struggling, he found it was the only effective strategy.  Once he felt a bit better, he crossed the street and walked into the Lee family flower shop.
âEvening, good sir,â he said jovially upon entry. Â Taeyong seemed to be in the process of tallying up the dayâs total from the till.
âYuta!â he said, looking from under his bangs. âWhat a surprise. Â You need something or just stopping in to say hi?â
âBoth,â Yuta answered, calm normalcy settling back into his brain as if heâd crushed it up and taken it in a little pill. Â âIâm getting some flowers in Markâs honor. Â Have you seen him yet?â
âYeah,â Taeyong said, setting down a handful of bills and rocking against the counter in front of him, âhe stopped by earlier today. Â Didnât get to talk long though. He warned me not to text you anything about it.â Â Taeyong smirked. Â
Who elseâd seen Mark before Yuta had? Â He pushed his petulant thoughts aside. Â âIâm having a little impromptu party in the loft tonight if you could be bothered. Â Just to celebrate being reunited as a mostly group, you know â now that all the youngâuns are back from break.â
Taeyong nodded. Â âSounds perfect. Â Just tell me the details and Iâll be there.â
âGreat. Â In the meantime,â Yuta continued, âIâd like to acquire a bouquet to decorate; make it homier, I guess. Â Also, I want it to be something Mark would like.â
Taeyong pursed his lips in thought and hummed. Â âWhat about bluebell?â he asked. Â âThey just came into season and Mark likes blue.â
âSounds good,â Yuta agreed as Taeyong cut a square of paper, scissors gliding with a satisfying crisp sound, folded it into a cone, and began arranging the bauble-like periwinkle blossoms inside it.
âAnything else you want in there?â asked Taeyong. Â Yuta hadnât come with a plan, so he found himself pondering his options uselessly. Â That is, until a golden bundle of baby sunflowers caught his eye.
âOh!â he said, pointing in their direction. Â âMaybe a few of those; since I like them and because Mark brought the sunnier weather with him today.â
Taeyong smiled softly, plucking three of the blooms and situated them amongst the bluebell in the least awkward arrangement possible considering their vast difference in size.
Yuta nodded his approval. Â âLooks good,â he remarked. Â âBy the way, where did you get them? Itâs not really the season...â
âThe sunflowers?â Taeyong asked, and Yuta nodded again.  Taeyong leaned over the counter and put a flattened hand on one side of his mouth like he had a particularly juicy secret.  Yuta leaned in too.  âI donât know if youâve heard but they have this very exciting new technology called a greenhouse.  Itâs still part of a classified experiment, but you know, I figured I could trust youâŚâ  Taeyong giggled at Yutaâs expense and at his own jest.
âAlright, whatever,â Yuta grumbled, reaching again for his wallet. Â âstupid question.â
âWhat are you doing?â Taeyong shot at him.
âPaying you?â Yuta responded.
âNo, youâre not. Â Friend discount; on the house.â
â Discount isnât supposed to mean free,â Yuta protested. Â
Taeyong gave a proud look as he forced the flowers on Yuta. Â âI am the house, therefore I get to decide what to put on it. Â Thatâs the final word.â
Yuta tried to argue again but lost due to Taeyongâs hard-headed generosity.
Taeyong gestured to Yutaâs bag of seeds as he was preparing to leave. Â âThat for Mark too?â he asked.
âNo, this is for me,â replied Yuta. Â âJust out of some herbs. Â Also, the flowers arenât only for Mark. Â Youâll all get to enjoy them!â
Taeyongâs eyes rolled up into his head for a moment, contrasting the sweetness of his face. Â âOkay, okay, fair enough. Â Iâll see you later tonight, then. Â I canât wait!â
When Yuta was out the door, he transferred his baggie so it was pinned between his elbow and side, giving him a hand to manipulate his phone. Â There was a text bubble on the screen from Mark confirming he could come over any time after 6:30. Â Yuta grinned, sending off a quick message in their friend group chat requesting the pleasure of everyoneâs presence at his home at 7:45. Â Â
Yutaâs family lived in a craftsman farmhouse with a compact cluster of woods in the backyard and a garden out front. Â The Nakamotos were not farmers, though, so the rest of the land which had once come with the house they sold in part and gave up in part to be used as communal land for the town. Â This meant that Yuta grew up with a slew of gardeners, hikers, picnickers, and campers hanging around his home, and his friends credited this with his sociability.
The houseâs old barn had been converted into storage space and a study for Yutaâs father, but once heâd graduated from college and returned home, the upper loft area was turned over to Yuta so he could enjoy more privacy from his parents and younger sister. Â It was really nice of them to let him move in there while he decided what to do with himself. Â He remembered transferring his belongings to the barn like he was moving into his dorm freshman year all over again.
Yuta and Mark hadnât met in school, since they were four grades apart. Â Instead, they met because they lived next door to each other; their familiesâ properties separated only by a short hawthorn hedge. Â Once when they were in elementary and preschool respectively, they became convinced there were dinosaur bones entombed in the plantâs roots and went to work hacking at them with plastic toy shovels until they had unearthed a series of interestingly-shaped rocks, or as they had put it to their horrified parents, âtriceratops horns.â Â
Yuta still had those rocks on a silver saucer he kept on his dresser to display random natural objects heâd collected over the years, and the memory flashed through him at the sight of them when he walked into his room that day. Â He placed his bouquet in a flouted cut crystal vase which he set in the sitting area on the far end of his loft, then ran a hot shower, figuring the steam would do some good for both his chilled nerves and constricted lungs.
When he exited the shower, he rummaged through his herb cabinet, pulling out some honey, turmeric, ginger, and ginseng. Â He placed the herbs into his quartz mortar along with a small spoonful of the black seed heâd bought from Kunhang, then crushed it all up with his pestle. Â He dumped the resulting paste into a mug, added some honey so that it all resembled liquified amber, and doused the mixture in hot water from his portable kettle. Â Before drinking it, he thought up a short prayer that the infusion might permanently sooth whatever inflammation was bothering his airways. Â He figured the strange discomfort wasnât anything serious, but you could never be too careful.
Yuta sipped the pungent concoction and scrolled through his phone. Â To his delight, most people were responding positively. Â Everyone besides Chenle and Taeil (who happened to be home visiting) was available, and when Yuta offered to reschedule, both of them said they could just have another gathering later and it would be for the better â Yutaâs loft was going to be a tough fit for all of them as it was. Â In a way it made him feel better that Johnny couldnât be there. Â That was the trouble with large friend groups: finding a time when everyone was free and motivated was as difficult as finding a spell Yutaâs mother hadnât practiced.
Yuta hooked his phone up to his speaker and played some music while he got dressed, swapping his black bathrobe for jeans, a white t-shirt, and the letterman cardigan thatâd been purchased ironically with the rest of his contemporary dance troupe in college, but quickly turned into one of his favorite items of clothing. Â Yuta peeked at his clock. Â An hour and a half and heâd be dancing around his room with his friends, pleasantly buzzed and listening to all the hijinks Mark had undoubtedly gotten himself into his freshman spring.
***
Yuta might have been a diviner, he thought stupidly, he had been that accurate in predicting how the night would go. Â Of course, it wasnât hard to anticipate an outcome heâd had a hand in orchestrating, but he excused his jumbled thoughts as they could be easily chalked up to the multiple Campari drinks heâd made himself over the course of the night â or, at least, that heâd convinced Doyoung to make for him. Â He was in the sitting area of his room, dancing with Mark and trying not to disrupt any of his furniture in the cramped space.
âMark Lee,â he said, setting his glass on the coffee table so he could gesture more freely, âyou mean to tell me you havenât been up to anything of note since winter break?â
âIâm telling you man, I havenât,â replied Mark, bouncing his way into the side of Yutaâs couch and pulling a startled face in response. Â A fit of tipsy giggles poured from Yuta, causing Mark to practically heave laughter.
âOkay, anyway,â continued Mark before anything else could throw him off. Â âItâs been midterms and stuff, so Iâve been really busy. Â Thatâs about all I can handle if Iâm still gonna try to keep the radio slot Johnny left to me and I promised him I would! Â Some people sleep, you know.â
Yuta scoffed. Â âI sleep,â he said, reaching towards the table to take a swig of the herbal red liquid in his glass. Â âAnyway, point taken.â
âYou really saw me at my wildest point, Yuta,â Mark said, sipping from his cider, âIâve calmed down since senior spring. Â I was nervous about college and I let that get to me whenever I came to visit you. Now Iâm adjusted; Iâm a new man.â
Yuta did a little spin and found that it made him lightheaded. Â He chose to ignore that observation. Â âWhat have you done with the Markie I knew?â he joked, pouting. Â âItâs alright, I guess I just bring out the devil in you and youâve gone soft now that Iâm not around as much.â
Mark spluttered. Â âYeah, dude, definitely. Â Itâs all that dark magic and shit â total bad influence.â
Yuta rolled his eyes, nearly sending a knee into his table since he couldnât see his legs for a moment. Â âOh, shut up, that âdark magicâ stopped you from needing crutches after you turned your ankle playing drunk badminton of all things! Â Imagine explaining that to your parents. Â You should be thanking me.â
Mark took a performative bow, extending a leg and outstretching his arms as if he were a 17th century gentleman.
âThank you, your majesty,â he said. Â âAlthough I seem to remember thanking you, like, a lot at the time.â
Yuta placed a hand over his chest. Â âThatâs of little importance, Markie. Â Donât you know a despot always needs his ego stroked?â
Mark looked at Yuta blankly. Â âA what?â
Yuta stopped dancing to stare in dramatic disappointment. Â âYouâre kidding, right?â
Before Mark could answer (and Yuta knew, of course, that Mark had been dead serious), they were interrupted by the ringing of metal tapping against glass. Â Yuta turned around to find Donghyuck teetering on his bed, surrounded by Yutaâs other guests. Â He had a glass of something in one hand and a copper candle holder in the other, clearing his throat.
âIs this a toast?â yelled Yukhei.
âNo,â Donghyuck replied, âthis is a complaint. Â Yuta Nakamoto: I have a personal issue with you that needs redress.â
Yuta scoffed as all his friends snickered in his direction. Â âAlright, Hyuck, do tell.â
âI couldn't help noticing that Yukhei got back a week ago and you never threw him a party. Â Same goes for Kunhang!" The supposedly offended parties just stood below Donghyuck, apparently surprised by their friend's little interruption. Jaemin and Jeno stood next to them, grinning with their arms tangled around each other by the edge of the bed. Â Yuta could never see the two of them together without a near violent glee overcoming him at the thought that everything had worked out. Â âAnd! And, you can't even be bothered to tune into a single one of my Twitch streams! What's up with that? Youâre obviously playing favorites!â
âHey,â Yuta began in his defense, âIâm your friend, not your teacher. Â Iâm allowed to have favorites. Â Get your own best friend.â
âOh, so he admits it!â
âHeâs just jealous youâve been hogging Mark all night, Yuta,â Doyoung interjected, and everyone laughed save Donghyuck, who wheeled around to glare at the source of the interruption. Â He cleared his throat.
âAnyway,â Donghyuck continued, âIn all seriousness, the reason everyone here agreed to attend this highly disrespectful event is because we love you, Mark, and weâre so happy youâre home. Â If your being away has taught me anything, itâs that I actually do miss your dumb face and accidentally genius sense of humor, but itâs also made me appreciate those things even more when weâre together. Â Donât let Yuta keep you all to himself for the next two weeks because then I might have to challenge him to a duel, and we all know that wouldnât end well for him.â Â Everyone tittered at that except Yuta, who just crossed his arms and tried to look dispassionate.
âWell, I should be concluding, but I think if anyone else has some thoughts for Mark â or for any of the college kids for that matter since they didn't get their own parties â you should express them now.â
The group gave Donghyuck a round of applause and he took a bow, wobbling dangerously as he jumped back to the cedar wood floor.
Next it was Taeyongâs turn. Â He stood where he was by Doyoungâs side rather than climb on the bed, clutching a cup in both hands and teasing Mark good-naturedly until he was a mortified mess against Yutaâs shoulder.
Kun went next, joking that heâd hired Jisung as his temporary delivery boy, so if Mark wanted to make any money over break, heâd need to scramble and get his shit together. Â He concluded by telling him not to let Yukhei talk him into too many keg-stands when theyâre visiting each other. Â Mark shook his head like a madman, waving his hands wildly in front of him as if trying to dispossess his parents of a bad impression.
Jaehyun did get up on the bed, declaring that Mark is only in college once and should be allowed to make as many bad decisions as he wants, Kun . Â Yuta found himself wondering unwelcomely exactly what kind of Bad Decisions Mark was making without him around. Â As Jaehyun moved on to reminiscing about childhood days of cow-tipping, Yuta was suddenly seized by another bout of breathlessness. Â It hit him like the slap of cold water in a polar plunge and made him feel as though every bit of tissue in his body was encased in plaster. Â He tried to breath through it, but it only got more uncomfortable the harder he focused on the mechanics of his breathing. Â Sicheng had draped himself on his side over the bed, preparing to speak no doubt, but Yuta realized guiltily he would need to miss it. Â The coughing was starting in earnest.
Mark noticed. Â He leaned in towards Yuta, eyes wide in genuine concern.
âYou okay, man?â
Yuta nodded, covering his mouth with his fist and holding up one finger to indicate heâd return in a moment. Â Then, he took off to the bathroom, the eyes of the group following him in discrete curiosity until Mark assured them all he thought Yuta was fine.
They probably just think I drank too much , he reasoned as he heaved over the sink. Â He felt like he had something stuck in his chest that needed to be hacked up, but nothing arrived no matter how much he coughed. Â After a few minutes of this, he stuck his head under the faucet and drank down as much water as he could manage, feeling whatever was stuck inside him being doused back down. Â His breathing shallowed, but at least he didnât have a violent need to cough anymore. Â Suddenly, a terrifying thought hit him: if this was asthma, the potion heâd made earlier coupled with the prayer should have taken care of it. Â What was it, then? Â
He looked in the mirror as he heard Sicheng finishing up, the sound of his words filtering in through the bathroom door but not actually registering in Yutaâs brain as coherent ideas. Â He thought he looked fine; his skin didnât have a sickly pallor and his gold-dyed hair didnât look greasy or sparse. Â His eyes were a bit glassy, but Yuta attributed that to all the coughing and gagging heâd just put himself through. Â He grabbed a lavender potion his mom had made him from his medicine cabinet and pressed it into the pressure points on his head and neck, trying to breath deeply as he did so. Â He would ask her about it in the morning and surely, sheâd know what to do.
When Yuta emerged, everyone was still milling around the bed, the quiet chatter that always signals the waning moments of a party setting in. Â Mark abruptly cut off his conversation with Donghyuck and bounded over to meet Yuta on his way to the group.
âDo you feel alright?â he asked, hushed, âwe were about to send someone to check on you. Need me to do anything to help? Â You can direct me and Iâll make you a potion or something. Â It might not be as good as one of yours but if youâre too tired ââ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Yuta forced a laugh, cutting off Markâs cutely concerned ramble. Â âNo, Iâm fine, thanks though. Â I just felt a little nauseous for a minute there, but Iâm good now.â
Mark nodded like a bobble head. Â âOh, uh, okay. Â Cool. Â Thatâs actually probably good, you know. Â Now, you wonât get a hangover.â
âYeah,â Yuta agreed, a pit forming in his stomach as he looked into Markâs dark brown eyes. Â âProbably good.â
***
Yuta awoke about two hours later in his maroon upholstered armchair, one foot extended on his coffee table right next to the bluebell and sunflower bouquet heâd picked up what seemed like days ago by now. Â Most of the party had gone home, but Jaehyun and Kunhang were snoozing on the bed, Jeno and Jaemin shared whispers in the corner, and Mark lay across the sofa facing Yuta. Â Yuta stood, ready to cattle-prod people out of his room if he had to. Â He woke Jaehyun and Kunhang and extracted everyone from his room with as much decorum as he could muster, and once heâd made his way back to Mark, the boy had woken up from all the hushed thank-youâs and goodbyes. Â His glasses were askew, and he looked around the room the way people do when they wake up somewhere they donât remember having fallen asleep.
âOh, hey,â he said, voice scratchy. Â âAm I the last one?â
âYeah,â Yuta confirmed, perching on the couchâs armrest, âbut donât worry about it. Â I saved you for last since youâre easiest to get home. Â Let me walk you?â
Mark giggled. Â âYou donât have to, itâs not like I could get lost.â
âI insist,â Yuta said, smiling firmly.
They walked, exhausted, from Yutaâs lawn to Markâs, Yutaâs flip-flop-clad feet dampened by early morning dew cold enough to make him shiver.
âDid you have fun?â he asked, as they came to pause by the hedge between their familiesâ properties.
âI really did,â said Mark. Â âThanks for getting everyone together on such short notice. Â Iâm lucky to have a guy like you for a friend.â Â Mark smiled. Â Sunny , Yuta thought, like real warmth was hitting him.
âSame for me about you,â Yuta reciprocated, cringing silently at his awkward phrasing. Mark didnât seem to notice.
âBy the way,â Mark added, âI forgot to say anything, but I really like the blond hair.â
âWhy thank you,â Yuta said, fidgeting side to side. âThis color makes me think of summer. Â A lot of personal changes can happen in three months, you know. Â Iâm still convinced Iâll get something interesting out of you, yet.â Â Mark guffawed as he took a step into his yard. Â âI mean, come on, Markie,â Yuta pressed, ânot even a significant other or anything? Â You used to be a hot item.â
âI have no idea what youâre talking about, dude,â Mark said, âand if you insist on prying into that, youâre only gonna be disappointed at the lack of anything to report.â
Yuta felt the air flow freely into his lungs for the first time in hours. Â He hadnât realized how much heâd missed his best friend â or rather he hadnât allowed himself to realize; probably because the realization hurt. Â Yutaâs four years away had been a struggle, but eight was seeming like borderline cruelty.
âFine,â Yuta offered, âIâll not pry, then. Â Letâs do something tomorrow, hm? Â I have work but we can meet up after.â
âSounds good.â
âGoodnight.â
ââNight. Â Thanks again, Yuta.â Â Mark started the rest of the way towards his house as Yuta waved him off.
âIt was nothing.â
Yuta tidied up a bit and got ready for bed, checking his almost dead phone before turning the light off. Â 3:42 in the morning, oh dear . Â Below the time was a short message from Mark. Â â Btw I liked the flowers in ur room. Â Might get some tomorrow from ty .â
Yuta stifled a cough.
***
Yuta woke up the next morning gasping. Â He was sure the only reason his body had jolted him to sitting was because heâd stopped breathing in his sleep and it was a last-ditch effort to save him. Â Once heâd gathered himself and gotten mostly ready for the day, he sat at his table to do a quick tarot reading. Â He shuffled his art deco set against the coffee table surface, then brought them back into a deck, settling for a one-card reading since his tired and confused mind begged him for simplicity. Â He took the top card in the deck and flipped it over. Â It was the ace of cups, reversed, the image showing an orange goblet ringed by water lilies around its base and crowned by rays of sunlight shining off the rim. Â All of it, upside-down.
Self-love, intuition, repressed emotions ⌠Yuta rattled off the cardâs associations in a slow attempt not to be concerned by its imagery.  Self-love, intuition, repressed emotions⌠ârepressed emotionsâ kept jumping out at him when he landed upon it.  Something about that made him uneasy.  Was he repressed? He took the deepest breath he could muster and slotted the cards back in their case, figuring this hunch would grow clearer the longer he lived with it.  He had to be at work soon, but wanted to ask his mom for advice about the breathing situation before he headed out, so he grabbed his soccer bag and rushed down the stairs.  The skylight above them revealed nothing but a grey sky.     Â

Hey where did you get the nct ot14 news from? I can't find it anywhere online like not at all
[this document was basically leaked i think? the person who posted it just posts about yg and sm stocks and other shit like that n theyâre p reliable] do i deleted the post earlier bc iâm cleaning up my blog but itâs a screenshot of a contract update report that sm releases i think twice a year ? and its just all the contracts w their idols the ot14 nct thing isnât confirmed bc wayv are under label v in that report so all of wayv are in tht section Which Means tenkuncaswin were not in the nct section .. no one rly knows if All of wayv arenât in nct anymore or just the new members bc these days sm has been addressing wayv as a separate group rather than an nct unit( example . in the super m showcase thing they said âhong kong and thailand natives lucas and ten are part of three separate groups, nct, wayv and super m.â so . wayv was called a separate group . if it were part of nct they wldnt have mentioned it specifically. another example is nctzens asking the staff of this wayv wiki thing to add in that wayv are an nct unit but the staff said that they couldnât bc sm told them that âwayv isnât an nct subunit and the 3 newer members are not part of nctâ) . ppl r questioning if ten kun yukhei sicheng are still in nct or not bc they werenât under the nct section bc if theyâre not there it means theyâre not under the nct contract, instead theyâre under the wayv contract. idk itâs confusing? i think theyâre still in nct actually but idk. donât worry abt it for now.

SM trainees
we did some research and found interesting things we would like to share. We are going to keep an eye on everything and hope to find out more about them soon.
We can not confirm anything yet, these are occasional conjectures!
We all have seen the photos of masked guys sitting next to Kun, Jungwoo and Yukhei at the SHINee concert a few months ago. We counted six. They are unrevealed trainees; some of them already have been spotted with confirmed Rookies or NCT members. Furthermore, there are Chinese trainees who are, however, not in Seoul. We can recognise a few of the trainees.
1. Kwon Youngjun
Korean
Spotted with rookies, NCT members and other trainees
attended the concert

2. White Mask Guy
no name yet
attended the concert
was spotted with Youngjun and another trainee

3. Chinese guy
technically confirmed
Chinese
has photos with Kun, Winwin, Yuzhi and Kaicheng (Yuzhi and Kaicheng both left)
had weibo once, canât be found anymore (which is a good sign)

4. Other guy
no name
probably Korean
apparently wears a SM shirt in the one picture (and the deer thing on his head could be from the smtown Christmas party; nct wore the same when they were rookies)

- danya
#I really like White Mask Guy but Rosie already claimed him and I can't do that#plus;; i have yukhei and sicheng and i can't drop them for a guy whose face is 3/4 covered#but his hair is sexy don't @ me i have a thing for hair#and the Other Guy looks so much like Aoora???#anyway#nct#sm rookies#credits @ owner of the photos

i think for sm, you can't start up any new social media accs. if you have one that's already existing they will have you completely erase everything from it and can't post on it to avoid any problems/scandals before debuting. thats why a lot of ex-sm trainees either start an ig/weibo when they leave or start back posting to their old accs. for example, kun is still a trainee under sm and has had his weibo for quite some time but had to delete everything and hasnt post despite liking nct stuff
and yukhei having a popular ig acc but deleting it when he gathered a lot of attention for being in sm
this is really interesting omg thank you!! yes it seems like sm will let you keep your handle as long as you arenât posting anything on it?? doyoung basically confirmed that he has twitter too since he says heâs on it 24/7 LOL + taeyong recently mentioned that heâs not allowed to have any sns accounts, so itâs probably decided on a case-by-case basis to some extent ;;

sm be hiding hansol for no reason it is actually nice to see kun jungwoo and yukhei on smrookies ig but it will be much better if there is hansol why tf would sm hiding hansol i cant wait anymore
I have a theory that Hansol is gonna debut with nct 127, like he hasnât been seen in awhile ((busy practicing for the comeback)), He isnât active on SMRookies SNS ((Bc he is no longer an SMRookie bc he is preparing for debut))
So itâs either he is preparing for debut or he has left SM ((which i highly doubt bc surely SM would tell us is he did and bitch I damn hope not bc I wanna see my 2nd boy get his shit on music shows and reel in new fans with those top notch visuals))
Also this would confirm my 7+2+1 ((127)) theory that SM has been planning this all along and 127 is the longitude of seoul explanation is a cover up for the order of members joining ((reversed tho, obviously))

âOh look, it might be Hansol again!â Theory
Hey, bear with us on this one - we actually have concrete evidence and some pretty interesting pictures, not just hopes and dreams this time. Then again, we only said âmightâ because pictures of trainees hanging around outside the SM building arenât exactly known for their high quality.

Yesterday, four trainees were spotted hanging out together outside of the SM building. Yukhei and Kun can both be seen, and we assume that the third one is Jungwoo although we canât tell. We know that Yukhei and Kun are there as there are other photos of them too.

But the fourth trainee? Who do we know that might potentially have a reason to be hanging around near SM, with other trainees?Â
There are reasons against it being Hansol: weâre not sure if he is even still a part of SM, heâs not a part of rookies like the others, his hairstyle looks different to what we are seeing in his selfies, we know SM have countless other trainees who it could be and appearance wise, itâs just a little suspicious. However, there is quite a lot of actual concrete evidence (as in, weâre not theorising this technically - these are actual facts) as to why it might be Hansol.
HIS CLOTHING
The fashion sense is something that Hansol would wear - comfy clothes, tank top, and he has been seen with that specific bag before. The outfit below looks pretty similar, if you want confirmation

HAIR COLOUR
We admit that the hair style is a little weird and doesnât necessarily match what weâve seen in his Instagram selfies. Still, the hair is the same colour (not that black is uncommon...) and the difference is small enough that what we are comparing could be due to angle and lighting.
HEIGHT AND BUILD
The trainee we are talking about in this photo seems shorter, right? Well, theyâre standing on a slope which would instantly reduce their height compared to the others. Plus, you have to remember that Yukhei is tall. Like, 180cm+ tall and probably even taller than that, because his height was never confirmed and heâs still growing (remember heâs 99 liner). Hansol is 184cm, so itâs likely that they are the same height - if you combine that with the slope and the fact that heâs bending his legs and standing awkwardly, it could easily get to the height we see in the photo. Plus, we agree that the build in the picture is a little strange - Hansol has broader shoulders, right? Well, in a photo he was tagged in on Instagram by an actor, his shoulders do look less broad,

and his selfies are showing that he has lost a lot of weight. Weâre not saying thatâs a good thing, but it could account for the difference in his frame now. Also itâs taken at an angle where you canât see his other shoulderÂ
INSTAGRAM
This is a minor point, but everywhere that Hansol has been on his Instagram (including to get coffee and a board game cafe) has been in Seoul so heâs still there, and even more so, everywhere he has been is within an hour from the SM building.
POSTURE
This is our main point. Itâs very, very difficult to fake a posture, and itâs very rare that two people will share the exact same one. The trainee in the picture is standing exactly like Hansol would - knee bent, arms up, not fully straight. There are even pictures which confirm this similarity,Â

and we are not the only people who think so. Completely impartial people, with no idea what to look for when looking for Hansol, agree that this similarity is too much to be a coincidence. The chance of SM finding another trainee who stands exactly like Hansol? Itâs looking suspicious at this point, right?
Weâre not saying that this is him. Personally, we donât because there is a lot of conflicting evidence, like the hair, and nothing adds up completely. However, there are a lot of things to consider and the posture similarities are kind of unsettling to us.
What do you think?

Basement Theory
Now I know that all of us are super happy and excited about Yukhei and Jungwoo being confirmed as official SM Rookies. However, Iâm not expecting a debut from them just yet. I am, however, expecting a debut from Kun and Hansol (but let's be honest, when are we not expecting a debut from Kun and Hansol in these theories?)
If SM debuted Hansol and Kun soon, that would mean the there would be no boys left in the official SM Rookie lineup because they were the only two left. SM have announced Yukhei and Jungwoo now, probably as a replacement for Hansol and Kun as they will be debuting soon. That way, SM Rookies Boys won't be empty. (We still got the girls that SM seem to have forgotten about...)
Every SM Rookie has been a Rookie for at least a year before debut and the only members who debuted without being members were Renjun and Chenle.Â
Sadly, I donât think Yukhei and Jungwoo will be debuting anytime soon as SM will want to promote them as Rookies more. It feels weird to me that they would announce them as Rookies and then debut them in a couple months. If they were going to do that, I donât think they would have bothered with announcing them as Rookies like they did with Renjun and Chenle.
The good new though is that I think this is a very very good sign for a Kunsol debut very soon! If SM werenât planning on debuting Kunsol this year they would be putting them out in SR17B content, but they arenât. This makes me think they arenât going to be in SR17B because theyâll be in NCT instead. And to be honest, it's about time

The SM Basement (NCT Edition)
Even though there are several members of NCT that everyone can recognise, some of the best talent has yet to escape the dark, damp room that is SMâs basement. With no way of telling who exactly is contracted under SM, there are certain undebuted idols who are hiding down there despite being popular in the NCT fandom. In case you donât know who SM is keeping hidden from us, here is a handy guide.
Side Note - a lot of the trainees in the SM Basement are officially unannounced, so a lot of information is unknown and what we can find might not be correct
OFFICIALÂ

NAME: Ji Hansol (ě§íě)
D.O.B: 21st November 1994
NATIONALITY: Korean (Busan)
BLOOD TYPE: AB
HEIGHT: 185cm
SPECIALTY: Dance (Potentially, rap)
NOTES: An announced SM rookie, Hansol joined SM after Jonghyun (SHINee) recommended him. He is one of the original SM Rookies. Hansol was featured in the first season of NCT Life (remember the boy trying to take a polaroid picture with a fan at the Bangkok showcase?) and is also Admin Rosieâs ultimate bias. Sheâs anxiously screaming for his debut at all times. (Side note, Rosie wanted to add this - GUYS DO YOU SEE MY SON, DO YOU SEE MY BABY DO YOU SEE HOW GORGEOUS HE IS. AND HE IS SO TALENT TOO IF YOU REFER TO THIS VIDEO. AND HAVE YâALL SEEN THE MISS YOU VIDEO?? IF YOURE ON DESKTOP GO WATCH NOW. BLOODY JESUS I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. i also donât feel as though we as a fandom talk about Hansolâs ability to do the splits enough - and tbh, Admin Beth seconds that comment about the splits - see below)

Moving on before Rosie bursts into uncontrollable sobbing,Â

NAME: Qian Kun (é˘é)
D.O.B: 1st January 1996
NATIONALITY: Chinese (Fujian)
BLOOD TYPE: B
HEIGHT: 178cm
SPECIALTY: Vocal, Chinese, Piano
NOTES: Kun was featured on the season of NCT Life in Seoul (the Chinese boy who wasnât WinWin, if that helps) and his vocals were featured on the Chinese version of Without You. He is absolutely adorable and his smile if contagious  Kun has a special place in Admin Bethâs heart and she desperately needs him to debut as soon as possible.
UNOFFICIALÂ

NAME: Wong Yukhei / Huang XuxiÂ
D.O.B: 25th January 1999
NATIONALITY: Chinese (Hong Kong)
BLOOD TYPE: Unknown
HEIGHT: 180cm +
SPECIALTY: Cantonese, Mandarin, Thai
NOTES; Yukhei is an unannounced rookie meaning that, officially, we shouldnât know about him (or be stanning him because lets face it, its SM and anything could happen). He is very close with Ten and recently got his ears pierced with him. Although nothing is really known, he is tall, a fluff ball, multi-lingual and a great visual. Also, Admin Beth stans him. Hard. Same with Admin Rosie.
EDIT Yukhei is now an official SmRookie and has been given the stage name Lucas

Okay you do not understand how long it took me to find a mildly hq picture of his whole face. For those of you who are familiar with Jungwoo, you probably know him more like this:

NAME: Park Jungwoo (Nam Jungwoo, potentially)
D.O.B 17th December 1998
NATIONALITY: Korean
BLOOD TYPE: Unknown
HEIGHT: Unknown (Tall-ish?)
SPECIALTY: Unknown
NOTES; Often seen with his face covered by a mask, Jungwoo has performed with the other SM Rookies at their shows. He seems to be a strong dancer (but then, who in NCT isnât a strong dancer?) but his position and specialties arenât known. Despite the fact we know nothing about him, Admin Rosie still chooses to stan him, or at least to stan the top half of his face.Â
EDIT Jungwoo has now been confirmed as an official SmRookie

NAME: Kim Dongyeon
D.O.B: 1st July 1998
NATIONALITY: Korean
BLOOD TYPE: Unknown
HEIGHT: Unknown
SPECIALTY: Dance
NOTES: This is really all we know about him. Heâs sometimes seen with other trainees or with the NCT members. Also known as side profile Daehyun.
This isnât theory but just an introduction to potential future members of NCT. We hope to see them all soon!!!
Note: Yuzhei and Kaicheng are not included in this as they are now ex Sm trainees. We wish them the best of luck in life xx
