🎬 If a movie or show were based on your fic, which fic would you choose and who would you fancast?

I don't think I really have any fic up with sufficient legs to make a movie or show, although if I have to pick one I'd say "Thomas and the Fucking Tiger in the Living Room" could make a fun short movie. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about current actors to do any kind of fancasting.

Oh, man. I actually don't read a lot of fic myself, or at least I haven't until recently, when I got into MDZS and other danmei and apparently plunged right into the depths of hyperfixation hell. But yes! I have recs, here are some recs.

Ihasa (@timetoddddavis) is absolutely a favorite of mine, and this is entirely separate from us being friends. Start with The Nerve or A Delicate Procedure.

oryx (@kabutoraiger) is another favorite author. Start with corner of the sky, which brings me joy whenever I read it.

Some headcanons for Kanda and Alma from my Romeo and Juliet AU, Songbirds in Winter, that nobody asked for (*no major spoilers for those reading):

Kanda came to live with the Epstains when he was eight (the same age as Alma)

Alma was ecstatic when he heard Kanda was coming to live with his family — he had never met his cousin, but didn’t have any friends his age (there were some children whose parents worked on the estate grounds, but it wasn’t “proper” for Alma to get too close to them)

When Kanda came to live with the Epstain family, he was very withdrawn and moody. He wasn’t aggressive, but he wasn’t the eager playmate Alma was hoping for.

Very much like in canon, Alma repeatedly tried to make friends with Kanda at first (and like in canon, Kanda initially tried to rebuff any attempts)

Alma would often attempt to scent things for Kanda to make him feel more at home and give him blankets and stuffed animals — since Alma is an omega in this AU, he immediately tried to entice his alpha cousin with nesting items. Kanda was sort of put off by this, but eventually, he warmed up to it. (And accepted some things >.>)

Eventually, Alma was the one person Kanda warmed up to, and they soon became inseparable. Kanda never wanted to admit it, but he found a lot of comfort in any scented, soft items Alma would share with him. T_T

Even though they had different secondary sexes, Alma would ask for Kanda to sleep in his bedroom/nest with him. Because they were pups, they could get away with it and took frequent naps together. X3

Whenever one of them was stressed/upset, the other would scent them, and they’d usually go hide and make a nest/pillow fort somewhere (or use Alma’s nest).

Kanda definitely started getting a little territorial of Alma when they were young. (He was always super protective, and the alpha in him naturally wants to keep his sweet omega cousin safe. ;__;)

Alma started going through warm heats when he was around fourteen (so nothing too intense). Because they were family, Alma’s father (Sahlins) allowed Kanda to stay with Alma to help with any symptoms since it seemed to help Alma the most. (Of course, this might have contributed to Kanda developing some deeper feelings toward Alma >.>)

When Alma started pressing flowers as a hobby, Kanda would leave the estate to find Alma flowers that were new/unfamiliar since Alma couldn’t leave the estate as an omega. ;__;

(Also, disclaimer to those who haven’t read SiW — it is a Tyki x Alma fic, but the unrequited Yulma elements are strong and their childhood lives rent-free in my head. And yes, they are cousins to make it spicy. XD)

Cliches in Marvel Movies

So I’ve watched a few more, but don’t have all that much interesting to say about them on their own. Thor 2 felt like it leaned more heavily into fantasy stuff, doing a bit more worldbuilding, but still didn’t feel like anything people would really nerd out over as much as they would with Middle Earth or the classics. Not really sure what makes this and the world of the Na’vi feel forced and things like Hogwarts and Westeros feel like a naturally occuring world. The Na’vi place, Westeros, and Middle Earth people put real work into, but Hogwarts and Asgard seemed more means by which to build a plot and house a story. If you have more insight into why the good ones are better, email me. I don’t care.  Meanwhile, Black Widow and The Avengers solidified the fact that I can actually enjoy well-crafted action now. I was happy to recognize that Captain America’s stunt double had a background in parkour. I looked it up later and he’s a ninja warrior type guy. 

BW also had a nice double twist where there was one thing presented as a plot twist that was just predictable enough to kind of see coming and make me feel smart, but then it turned out to be a fake betrayal, where the double crosser was actually just getting the good guys closer to the bad guys, so not so clever after all, Steve. But they pulled that off well, hiding the real idea behind a good amount of clues.  But one thing that stood out to me in a sort of interesting neutral way was the use of cliches. Thor 2 had a damsel in distress*, an adopted younger prince wanting a throne, good guys generally win so far, virtuous underdogs coming out on top, power of friendship, thought-to-be-dead evil guys coming back to take over the world, and probably more.  The thing about the cliches is that none of them are problems by themselves. Even damsels in distress just make a convincing motivation until they start to be a pattern that shows the weird power dynamics people are looking for. Seeing any of these things for the first time would make for an extremely convincing story. Our general cannon of stories probably should have all these tropes once or twice. It’s when you see them repeatedly that they start to feel old.  However, Marvel is using enough of them to almost express an entitlement. It’s like all the stories gather around and they all have to share the limited amount of cliches that can be used before they get old, and Marvel just takes them all. As the highest grossing franchise of all time, it seems like it has definitely successfully become what it was aiming for. I’m not sure whether to see it as greedy trope hogging, or just the best fundamental representation of what our culture currently has to offer in terms of story-telling. Using all the cliches makes it feel like MCU is an attempt to be human kinds’ narrative magnum opus. Throwing everything it’s got in there. Literal myths passed down primarily through oral tradition, comics that have gone through dozens of retellings already, and every story-telling tool in the shed. Using a couple cliches is kind of innevitable, using a bunch makes a story weaker, but these guys pushed through and are just using all of them, and apparently once that happens it starts to feel magnum opussy**.  *Thor 2 definitely had a damsel in distress. It seems like they were kinda trying to hide this one by making her a Strong Independent Woman because she’s good at science or whatever, but I would say that failed for a couple of reasons. First of all, when I think about other Ds in D, they all still have skills. Snow White was socially graceful, able to communicate and integrate herself into groups of outcasts and animals, both of whom have probably learnred to be fairly mistrusting of people. Rapunzel in Tangled and Cinderella were creative and very artistic for people with no access to education. Thor Lady being good at science makes her seem like a SIW because her skills are valued, likely because they’re associated with masculinity, unlike that of the other Ds in D. Also, her science skills were useless in an interdimensional war between magical godlike creatures. The only time Earth science was useful was when the older man came up with it. So I think it’s safe to say that doesn’t count. She didn’t talk much for a lot of the movie and didn’t offer anything unique in solving the conflicts around her.  **Fantastic name for a character. Magnum O’Pussy.

Hey, everyone!!!

A while ago, I started noticing that some well-known artists were creating "Voice Claim" videos to show their audience what their characters sound like. (Thank you, @indieyuugure for the inspiration to do this!) And after watching their videos, I thought to myself- "Hmm... I want to do that!"

So, for the last few months, I have been searching and gathering intel trying to decide what my characters from my story, "The Strength in Weakness" would sound like. Finally, I had all my voices picked out.

Then the new year came, and with it, a whole new burst of creative inspiration and drive. One of my main goals this new year, was to practice animation more. And then it clicked: I was going to animate every scene I had picked out for my characters.

I have been working for the last week on this video, and now I can finally present it to you all!!!

~VOICE CLAIMS FOR "THE STRENGTH IN WEAKNESS" CHARACTERS~

Leonardo - It took me a LONG time to figure out my Leo's voice. In my chapters, I describe his tone being cool, calm, and very gentle. However when he's angry or feels threatened, his voice sharpens like the edge of an icicle. This specific tone was NOT easy to find in a VA- A tone that can be as tender and smooth as silk, while also snapping to cold and commanding in a mili-second. I went through many options, but eventually landed on the cool, kind voice of Kirby Morrow, from Scott in X Men Evolution. :)

Raphael - THIS DUDE- THIS....MUTANT- Took the longest to find his voice. Apparently looking up "Brooklyn-accented character" was as useful as a UNO card in a game of poker- A huge part of me wanted to just steal the voice of 2003 Raphael- (Cause he's amazing), but my stubbornness to keep the voices unique won out against that. Eventually I had two options left- Christian Bale in Newsies, or Renegade Knuckles from Sonic Prime. I couldn't find enough audio to use for Christian's voice, so I chose Renegade's instead. Vincent Tong delivered his gravelly, Brooklyn/New York accented lines in a way that fit perfectly with my version of Raph. :)

Donatello - It did not take me that long to see how perfect Jack De Sena's voice was for my version of Don. Sokka, (the original character voiced by Sena), is my favorite Avatar character- and his passion, intelligence in engineering, and squeakiness were just too good not to pick for my angry, freckled genius. :)

Lotus - My precious little oc took a bit of time to get the right voice.. In my story, (at least where I'm up to), she's mostly quiet, but has her explosive moments of suppressed anger or bitterness. She's also quite passionate and argumentative when it comes to someone "lying" or "manipulating" her in any way. She's very conscious of everything happening around her, always taking note of changes in emotions, attitude, and body language. This took a bit of searching, but eventually I found the perfect tone and attitude in the voice of AJ Michalka. :)

Michelangelo - After finding Kurby Morrow's voice, I remembered that his character in X Men Evolution had a little brother... With a chill vibe... and a surfer dude tone. And I was sold on the relaxed, surfer dude, innocent voice of Matt Hill. :)

Originally, I wanted to animate and record the voices for my Splinter and my main villain, Specter. But um... Life got busy again- as well as I was too scared to try drawing- NEVER MIND ANIMATING- Splinter... Soooooo yeahhh that didn't happen... But hope you guys enjoy this all the same. :)

SIW AUDIO BOOK Chapter 1 - A Stranger in Our Home

YOU GUYS DID IT!!! Thanks to so many people sharing my animatic of my story, I was able to reach 1,000 views on it! And nowww here is Chapter 1 of “ The Strength in Weakness” Audio Book and Animatic. :)

Also, as promised, I will continue to turn my story into an audio book. :) I won’t be able to animate the WHOLE of every chapter, but instead just particular scenes like this one. :)

Story, Art, Voice Talents, and Editing were all done by myself, while Epidemic Sound covered the music and sound effects!
