New Delhi | Textile exhibition Vayan - The Art of Indian Brocades delves into the history of the decorative weave
The 17th century English explorer Edward Terry wrote of his visit to India: “The natives there show very much ingenuity in their curious manufactures, as in their silk stuffs, which they most artificially weave, some very neatly mingled either with silver or gold or both…” It is these glowing, glistening, lustrous “silk stuffs” that are the subject of a dazzling exhibition at the National Crafts…

Delved back into my stash and made some pouches out of some of the bigger scraps. The pin up spooky girlies are from the scrap trade with @aksarah and deserved better than to be cut up smaller in any way, I think it’s the biggest, floppiest pouch I’ve made so far; the Batman one is all I had left of those fabrics but again they were too good to waste as part of a non-themed item; and the brown and gold is third-time-recycled-sari silk, as in, it was once a sari, then some enterprising person made hobo bags out of it to save the fabric from landfill, (which I bought at my local market and to this day still wish I’d bought ten more) and then several years later when I’d worn it to death and it was severely degraded in some areas, I cut that up, and now it’s a pouch!
All are lined and zippered.

I think ramie is officially my favorite plant based fiber for spinning
Even after plying (bracelet, so 2-ply) it’s definitely one of the finest things I’ve ever spun and I wasn’t even trying that hard
The texture may seem a little sketchy at first but by the time it was all spun/plied/rested a little bit it’s very nice
And although I think I’d stick to wool if I was doing something like trance work, I found meditating while spinning this to be very pleasant (once you get into it a little bit) and I would definitely like to explore that more

Sprinkly Wrinkly is nice to spin but probs better for someone who does art yarns. It's made of merino, tencel, sari silk, and stellina (that's the glittery stuff) and I can draft it easily except for the silk bits (think it's the silk anyhoo). Those bits get a bit slubby with me.

(Hmm, you might not be able to see it there. Meh.)
Could look really interesting when I ply it. If there's enough (bought 100g so there should be) I think it'll make an awesome earwarmer/headband thingy. XD

Doing the bare minimum for Textile/Fashion Worldbuilding by asking "what if there was a long strip of fabric-?"
Rich or poor, leisurly or doing hard labor, on the moons of Saturn it's very common to have a sash as part of your outfit, which can be worn a number of ways- although it's not typically long or wide enough to wear as THE main part of the outfit

I lost the bobbin cover for my sewing machine so I can't use it until a new one comes in the mail. IN the meantime, I've been hand sewing everything for this "practice" jacket, which I'm making in preparation for the real jacket which will be made from wool I spent $180 on. This has four fucking layers, lol. There's the outer layer, the interlining (made from a lovely Hulk-themed flannel I bought just to use for mock-ups, so I didn't mind sacrificing it as interlining), the silk lining, and another fabric to strengthen the silk, since it is THIN (makes sense, considering it was from damaged sari silk fabric I found on ebay; no need for warm or strong fabric in 115F weather lol). Because the silk is so thin, I've been hand sewing it to the interfacing fabric along the edges as a way to keep it all from fraying.
my hand sewing is not pretty but it gets the job done. And like I've said, it's weirdly meditative.
The real jacket will be knee length with a capelet, so it uses a ton of fabric. I didn't want to use 6 yards of fabric to make a practice jacket, so this one is only hip-length.
This is the coat I will eventually be making. I had to do a lot of fucking around with the mockup to get it to fit right. Always do mock-ups before you cut anything, lol.

Still in tidy-up mode. Very reluctantly, I’ve added one of my favourite ongoing spinning projects to Etsy: recycled sari silk sourced from Fibrehut, currently in purple, red and gold colourways. I have blue on my spindle right now; it may end up on Etsy too, if I don’t get a tableloom before anyone clears me out of this.
Let me know if you’re interested and have any questions.

New Spins
I have a lot of sari silk, and I’ve been finding ways to put it to good use: mixing it with wool and alpaca. Its really cool material, it goes very far. It’s a recycled/upcycled product to begin with, and I’m still discovering how to work with it. My recent yarns are 2 very different approaches. The first is a single, worsted weight, composed of my home processed, hand dyed wool, carded up with…
