Sunday mornings are my favorite mornings. The cafe opens at twelve and it’s the only day in the week where I don’t have to leave at seven, to prep the cafe.
But, no matter if I have to go to work or not, I get up at six. I just can’t help it. I want to surprise John with a breakfast in bed. When I saw him in bed, so relaxed and precious, I couldn’t help but smile. He really is the love of my life.
Our rose tea is setting, while I prepare Tiki and Oreo’s food, with the two of them sitting near my feet, patiently waiting for their food to arrive.
Tiki whimpers as she stares at her bowl.
‘I know, sweetheart, but have a little patience,’ I say.
I feel two strong arms around my waist. ‘Good morning, beautiful,’ John whispers in my ear. ‘Have I told you that you look really good in my shirts?’
‘You have told me once or twice.’
While I store away the kibble, John places the bowls on the floor. The dogs eat their breakfast and John lifts me up and places me on the counter. ‘How are you feeling, baby?’ he asks, standing between my legs.
‘A little sore,’ I admit, adding a wink. ‘But overall, I feel good.’ I fold my hands in the back of his neck. ‘Why are you out of bed?’ I ask him.
‘I missed my lady.’
‘I was going to make you some breakfast in bed, but now you ruined my surprise.’
John places his large hands on my bare thighs. ‘We can make breakfast together and eat it in bed,’ he suggests.
‘Or you make me breakfast and bring it to me in bed,’ I say with a grin.
He laughs. ‘Or I make you breakfast, but you sit right here, so I can look at your beautiful face.’ John pecks my lips, squeezes my thighs.
‘Sounds like a plan,’ I chuckle and I watch him prepare the pancake batter.
I let out a sigh in content, leaning my head against the cupboard. Somehow my mind wanders off from last night, to what my mother said. I told her that I didn’t want to think that far ahead into the future, but somehow it’s the only thing I can think about, no matter what I do or where I am.
Yesterday, when I saw two little kids in the cafe, with their parents, my heart started beating a little faster. The dad with the four year old girl on his lap, the mom with a two year old boy against her chest, who was fast asleep.
I can see myself having kids with John one day. I thought about it since the first time he called me ‘mommy’ when he spoke to Tiki. Though the birth part still scares the living daylight out of me (thank you for ruining that for me, mother, by forcing me to watch that program), I can see a future with little kids running around our house. Maybe two, a boy and a girl, or three, I don’t know.
I wonder what John would be like as a father. I bet he—despite his upbringing—would be such a loving and doting dad, who would spoil the kids to death, but also discipline them, teaching them right and wrong. He would be so involved, I imagine, especially since he is already retired.
The idea of fostering older kids, I still want that, but maybe a little later, when our own kids are older.
Our own kids…
Well, it’s what I want really. Having kids with him one day.
‘Darcie,’ John says, causing me to snap out of my thoughts.
‘What?’ I ask.
‘You looked a little daze. I was wondering where you were with your mind.’
‘I’m sorry.’ I smile at him and say: ‘Just daydreaming.’
His smile grows wide. ‘Care to let me in?’
‘Nah, think it’s too soon to talk to you about this.’
‘I highly doubt that,’ John says. ‘If you don’t want to tell me, that’s okay, but you can talk to me about anything. I hope you know that.’
I take a deep breath and nod. John is still stirring the pancake batter. I always use the mixer, but I think this is John’s way of showing off. Watching him flex is muscles… I mean, you don’t hear me complaining.
‘Do you want kids?’ I blurt out, unable to keep it to myself. ‘With me, obviously.’
John doesn’t seem fazed at first, but when he looks up, his eyes has widened. ‘You’re thinking about kids?’
‘When we were at my parents and you and dad went out for a drive, my mom was wondering when I would be giving her grandchildren. I told her that that was too far ahead in the future, but since that moment I can’t stop thinking about it. And you are giving me no reaction at all. I bet you’re freaking out, so yeah, I’m going away, to call my mom and to tell her that it’s all her fault that you and I are breaking up, because of this kid thing and then I’ll go to Jennie, because I’m too embarrassed. I’m so sorry.’
I jump off the counter and want to walk away, but John grabs my hand. ‘Don’t go,’ he whispers. He slowly pulls me back, so I’m standing right in front of him. His pointer finger lifts up my chin, since I’m just staring at his chest. ‘I’m not breaking up with you, because you brought up our future. There is no need to be embarrassed for thinking about that.’
‘So you are not freaking out?’ I ask.
‘No, I was just a bit surprised, but I’m not freaking out.’ He smiles at me and presses a kiss on the tip of my nose. ‘But to answer your question: I have given it a thought,’ John admits. ‘And well, I would love it to have a mini you or me running around one day. Maybe more.’
My eyes practically roll out of their sockets. He really wants kids with me? Am I dreaming? ‘You want that?’ I ask, just to be sure. ‘Are you sure?’
‘Yes, of course.’ He smiles, thin lines appearing near his eyes. ‘I mean, I can see you being such a lovely and caring mom. I just thought you said you wanted to foster.’
‘I still want that,’ I say, ‘but when I said that, I didn’t know you that well. I didn’t know you were the most caring and loving man I would ever meet. I talked to Eric about it when we were dating, but he didn’t want kids, probably because he was hiding one from me. The idea of having our little kids running around… I can see it happen.’
John smiles. ‘So you want to have kids with me.’ Why does he look oddly pleased with himself?
‘I mean, I could run around Times Square, yelling that I want kids and need some sperm, see who is going to respond.’
He bursts into a loud laughter, hiding his face in his hands. ‘You’re not doing that,’ he tells me, ‘because the only one who is getting you pregnant, is me.’
‘Oh my God, John,’ I say, a blush appearing on my cheeks. ‘You have to say it like that?’
He holds back a chuckle and kisses my forehead. ‘How about: You’re not doing that, because you and I will have kids one day.’
I bite my lip and fist his shirt between my fingers. ‘Yeah that’s better.’
‘I’m proud of you, Darcie.’
‘Why is that?’
‘You never talk about the future,’ he admits, ‘nor do you ever want to think that far ahead, but somehow you—voluntarily—mentioned something that involves our future.’ He shrugs. ‘I mean, you are definitely growing.’
Tiki barks and I look down to her and Oreo, whose tails are both wagging. ‘I think they need to go out for a walk,’ I say.
‘First you and I have some breakfast, than those two are getting their walks.’

The entire workday I couldn’t help but think about two things. One, how John wants kids with me and two, about how Pete Stanford is a free man. Those things are a horrible combo.
The cafe is about to close and the only two customers who are still here, are Roger and Ellie. It still melts my heart to see the Roger treats his new girlfriend. I love having her around here. When things are a little busy, she gets up from the table and helps us out for a quick second. She truly is one of a kind.
‘Okay you two,’ I say to them. ‘The cafe closes in three minutes.’
‘Almost done, miss Angel,’ Roger says, scribbling something down.
Ellie closes her books and says with a smile: ‘I had to help Roger with his algebra homework.’
‘You are a true angel.’ I place a hand on her shoulder. ‘He is a lucky guy.’
‘I certainly am.’ Roger closes his books and looks at his girlfriend with almost heart eyes. ‘Are you ready to go, love?’
Oh my God, he called her love. I’m going to cry. This is so soft.
‘Yes,’ she says, shoving her books in her backpack. She stands up and wraps her arms around me. Since she has to go to school again, she usually works here at Wednesdays and Saturdays and visits the cafe at Sundays. ‘Thank you for the cupcakes, Darcie.’
‘You’re welcome, sweetheart.’
Roger stands up and gives me a hug. I think Roger might be the sweetest seventeen year old in the world. ‘I’ll be here tomorrow, miss Angel,’ he tells me. ‘Promise.’
‘I’m looking forward to it.’
Roger gently pulls Ellie’s backpack from her hands and holds her hand. Raye opens the door for one of our favorite couples. ‘You bring her home safely,’ Raye says. ‘And you walk her all the way to her door.’
‘I will, miss Clarke.’
She pats his back and closes the door behind them. ‘They are the cutest,’ she says, turning the sign over from OPEN to CLOSE. ‘God, it’s so fucking unfair that even someone as annoying as Roger has a girlfriend. Really makes me wish I had someone.’
‘Your time will come,’ I say.
‘I’ve been meaning to ask this the entire day,’ Raye says, ‘but since you are so prude during work hours, I thought I’d wait until we were closed.’
‘This can’t be good,’ I mumble.
‘Did you have sex last night?’
‘Raye Clarke!’ I yell at her.
Jennie looks up from the sink. ‘Why are you asking her that?’ she asks curiously.
‘Because when John was sitting here, they kept exchanging glances and when he left and she gave him a kiss, it was a little more intense than usual.’
I feel a little bit exposed by this revelation of hers and because I’m not saying anything, Raye starts laughing. ‘I fucking knew it.’
‘I don’t want to talk about it,’ I say.
‘Of course you don’t want to,’ she laughs. ‘But I do have another question.’
‘I don’t want to hear it.’
‘I mean, besides the obvious sexual tension between you two, there was something else.’ Raye crosses her arms in front of her chest. ‘What was that about? Can you explain?’
JOHN WANTS KIDS WITH ME. I shake my head. ‘No, can’t explain that.’
Raye raises an eyebrow, but leaves it at that.
We continue to clean up the kitchen, the rest of the tables, but as usual, Raye sneakingly is checking her phone. ‘Oh my God,’ she all of the sudden says. She stares at her phone, her brows furrowed together. Before I can tell her that she needs to put that phone away, so she can clean up as well, she says: ‘Your father apparently did an interview five hours ago. Talking about how they would, though Pete is a free man now, will seek justice and put him away for life.’
‘How is your dad by the way?’ Jennie asks.
‘He was supposed to cocoon with my mother, but turns out he is really seeking for revenge,’ I mumble. ‘I haven’t spoken to him today.’
‘Still can’t believe he got away with it,’ Raye says. ‘He is such a psychopath.’
Jennie sighs deeply. ‘Poor girl didn’t deserve to die like that and she certainly doesn’t deserve her murderer getting away with it. Fucking lunatic.’
Raye puts her phone away and says: ‘I’ve got to go,’ she says. ‘I have a friends with benefits appointment.’
I raise an eyebrow. ‘You still do that?’
‘Like every month,’ she explains. ‘But only when he’s not seeing other girls.’
Jennie scrunches her nose, thinking about Raye’s friends with benefits. ‘What was his name again?’
‘Logan,’ she answers. ‘I haven’t had sex in four weeks and I really need to get laid.’
‘Your toys not good enough?’ Jennie asks.
She sighs. ‘No, my favorite one broke and my hand isn’t good enough.’
‘Use your shower head,’ I say, without even thinking. My cheeks fire up and I place my hand in front of my mouth. Can’t believe I just let that slip.
Raye lets out a high pitched squeak. ‘Oh my God, how do you even know about that? Did you watch porn? Did our sweet little Darcie watch porn? Never pecked you for that.’
‘No, it’s… God, I was sixteen, still living at home and too scared to buy myself a toy. I read something about that online, so I tried it.’
‘Oh my God,’ Jennie laughs. ‘This is hilarious.’
‘Don’t talk about it. Raye, fucking go and have sex with Logan and I’ll see you tomorrow.’
Raye kisses us both on our cheeks and while still cackling with laughter, she exits the cafe.
‘You can go home as well,’ I say to Jennie. ‘I just need to check the register and some paperwork and then I’m off anyway.’
‘Are you sure?’ she asks.
‘Yeah, I’m sure. You worked hard today, so you go home. I insist.’
‘Well, that means I can finally catch up with my series.’ She gives me a hug and says: ‘Say hi to John from me when he picks you up.’
‘Will do.’
After Jennie left the cafe, I’m checking the register and read some of the paperwork. It’s been about an hour since my friends left, when John calls me. ‘Sweetheart,’ he says when I pick up, ‘I’m stuck in traffic, on a Sunday of all days, but I’ll try to be there as soon as possible.’
‘Don’t rush, please. I would like to see you in preferably one piece.’
‘I’d like to be in one piece as well,’ he mentions. ‘I didn’t bring the dogs with me. I took them out for a long walk after we left the cafe and they are pretty out.’
‘You take good care of them, honey,’ I say with a smile. ‘You really don’t need to rush. Have a ton of paper work to do anyways.’
‘I’ll help you,’ he says, ‘so please don’t stress about it, okay?’
Since I really don’t want to read through the pile of paper, I’m quick to say: ‘Okay, I’ll wait for you.’
I walk to the kitchen and clean up some bits that we’ve missed, while chatting to John about how my day was. We briefly mention Pete Stanford, but I don’t want to talk about that for too long.
‘So,’ John says, ‘call me a bit premature, but I looked up some baby names today.’
‘Oh my God, you’re so adorable,’ I chuckle, feeling my heart flutter. ‘Did you see any names you liked?’
‘I did see one name that I really liked. Livia, for a girl.’
‘Livia Wick,’ I say, ‘I like the sound of that.’
‘You like that?’
‘Mister John Wick, I really like how you are thinking about baby names. But please know that we’re not having a kid tomorrow.’
‘No, sweetheart, I understand. I just couldn’t help myself.’ He laughs. ‘Let me ask a question that is a little bit more urgent: would you like pizza for dinner or the left over pancakes?’
‘Left over pancakes,’ I say, ‘but this time I want chocolate chips in mine.’ I hear the door open and say: ‘Oh, you’re here early. Thought you were stuck in traffic, sweetheart.’
‘Darcie, I’m still stuck in traffic.’
I roll my eyes. If it is that stuck up old man again, who demanded Raye would give him her number, I’m gonna strangle him. I walk to the front. ‘I’m sorry, we’re closed,’ I say.
‘There she is.’
My soul nearly leaves my body. What the hell is Pete Stanford doing in my cafe? ‘Maybe you didn’t read the sign, but we are closed.’
‘Just wanting to check in with you.’
That can’t be good. ‘We don’t know each other.’
‘You really think that, Darcie?’
I hear John’s voice through my phone, but I’m too scared to bring the phone to my ear. I’m too scared to move anyways. He knows my name. Pete fucking Stanford knows my name. Please, John, be here soon. ‘Well,’ I utter, ‘I know you from the television, but I wouldn’t know how you’d know me.’
‘Well, I knew that Christian Angel had a daughter,’ Pete Stanford says. ‘A few Google searches… It didn’t take me very long before to know that his daughter has such a lovely cafe.’
‘What do you want from me?’ I ask him. Please, Darcie, do not fucking faint. John will be here any second. ‘I mean, you won your case, you’re a free man now. Why bother coming to my cafe?’
‘Because your dad ruined my life.’ Pete Stanford looks at me with his piercing blue eyes. He still looks rough, probably didn’t waste a second to go on his little scavenger hunt.
The door opens and four other guys step in, one even bigger than the other.
‘Okay,’ I say, my voice shaking, ‘but what do I have to do with that?’
Pete Stanford laughs. ‘Well, I’m going to get my revenge and it doesn’t take a genius to know what Christian Angels biggest fear is. Something happening to his lovely wife and his beautiful daughter.’
‘No, no, no, no,’ I say, ‘please, you need to leave my parents alone.’
‘I won’t, because I already took your parents and I’m going to let them both watch how their precious daughter will be ripped up in pieces,’ Pete says. He starts to dig through his pocket and shows me a pendant. ‘Does this look familiar?’
Oh my God, that is my mothers. My father gave it to her three years ago and I remember nearly vomiting in my mouth because of how romantic it was and how jealous I was, because Eric never bought me anything remotely nice. ‘What is happening?’ I ask.
One guy takes a step closer and Pete says: ‘Don’t resist too much, Darcie. We don’t want to hurt you just yet.’
I run inside the kitchen, but the guy is too strong and his arms are wrapped up around my body, dragging me to the exit. ‘Let go of me,’ I scream and I try to kick the man. Somehow I manage to kick him on the knee and it must’ve been a weak spot of his, because he growls in pain.
But I also managed to anger him even more. He throws me against the wall and by the time I hit the floor, I’m out.

We Seek That Which We Shall Not Find, Chapter 5
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4
Written for @ruleofexception’s birthday! I didn’t mean for Laxdo Arc to go on SO long in this fic, but HERE WE ARE. Hopefully in the next chapter we’ll be buttoning up this session (man, I am really dedicated to making this one seem six hours long, I guess. REALISM, you know)
“Are you seriously going to allow this?”
Shirayuki saw a bobcat once, back when she lived in the middle of nowhere and regularly had to shoo raccoons off the trash and hiss at fisher cats that roamed too far onto the property for comfort. She’d thought it was a cat, one of the big Maine Coons Mrs. Kino bred on the property catty-corner to theirs. She’d come close, thinking she might make kisses and lead it back to its grateful owner.
Too independent for their own damn good, Mrs Kino would laugh, shaking her head. Always trying to escape, like they can hunt kibble in the wilderness.
It took ten more steps than it should have for her to realize it was too big, too sleek for a Coon cat, but by then it’d seen her too, eyes shining gold in the dark.
She’d seen wild animals before -- loads of them, in fact, but this -- this was the first time she’d seen one look back with no fear. The cat only stared at her with a knowing sort of menace, the kind that said it knew full well she couldn’t do a single thing to it that it didn’t allow, and it could do a whole heck of a lot to her --
And she sees the same look now, just in blue, as Izana calmly flicks his gaze between her and Obi and pointedly turns to his brother. “I am afraid I have no idea to what you are referring. Your rest, perhaps?”
“No!” Zen throws a hand across the table, making a vague gesture toward Obi. “His -- his advances.”
“I thought we had already explored this avenue to its fullest,” Izana tells him, a thread of disappointment tying the sentiment up in a patronizing bow. “Obi is roleplaying. Unlike some of the other players here at this table.”
“But--!”
“Careful there,” Kiki drawls flatly, “if you try to get him to blanket ban flirting between characters, what are you going to do?”
His pale skin goes from parchment to pink, and, oh, looks like Kihal had been right about the, ah...purposefulness of Zen’s actions at least. “I didn’t say flirting, I meant, you know...”
“Brother.” Izana somehow manages to infuse the word with both the utmost derision and the most insincere pity. “I can’t make your character have more chemistry with Lynet.”
“I didn’t say that!” Zen yelps. “I’m just thinking about, you know, Shirayuki’s comfort.”
Izana blinks, slow and steady, just like that bobcat, no fear. “Did my ears deceived me, or did she not tell us mere hours ago that she did not mind Beaumains’ compliments?”
“Compliments is sort of understating--”
“Zen.” Kiki draws his complaint up short with only a word. “She’s fine with it. You are the one making it weird now.”
He huffs, twisting his head away, but doesn’t say anything.
Kiki’s mouth curls, and Shirayuki is sharply reminded of someone else at the table. “I mean, if you’re feeling left out, we could really make this game true to the myths, and I could--”
“No!”
“Well now that that is solved,” Izana drawls, his mouth curling into that unnerving half-smile of his, knitting his fingers together under his chin, “have we come to a decision?”
Weariness is a weight upon your back; it has been hours since the first twisted servitor emerged from the brush, hours since the last took its final breath, hours since you stopped for more than a breath and a bite to eat. The sun has long past set, but instead of the soft chirp of crickets as you pass, there is silence.
It is in this silence that you come upon it, your first sight of Laxdo.
Your heart clenches in your chest. It is same as it was so many years ago, when your father and the lord of this place had feasted together for seven nights, celebrating the joining of their houses. You had not yet been a woman, and the lord’s son had hardly been old enough to keep a knife at his belt, but still they had shook hands on it, had sat you both together and exclaimed over what a fine pair you would make.
Your would-be husband had burst into tears, snot running down his face with the force of them, and declared himself a bachelor forever. You had bore up better, but your own heart housed a similar sentiment.
Oh, how long ago that is now. You would have been married by now, had your fathers had their way, but when yours disappeared…
Ah, well, it would not have been the first of his plans to go by the wayside. Before or after.
As a child, Laxdo had seemed a glittering edifice of man’s triumph. Your own manor was not small, not by any means, but Laxdo was closer to court and thus its gardens manicured, its stones gleaming. It was larger than the Castle Perilous as well, and you had thought, in all the wisdom of a girl who had until that moment traveled hardly a day’s journey from home, that even Tintagel could not be so magnificent as this.
It shames you to think that you might never have known the thought to be false, had not all this happened. That you can find a silver lining to these terrible events, to the terror of your sister, sickens you. While you have this glorious adventure, she is trapped within the walls of your home, subject to the whims of the madman that has decamped in its halls.
“My lady.” Beaumains rides close at your side, closer now that it makes the prince glower at his back. From your other side, Bedwyr watches him, wary. It’s unnecessary; the only thing that shines in the demon’s eyes is concern. “Are you all right?”
“Just thinking,” you tell him, voice hardly above a murmur. “I was here, once before.”
“So close to Tintagel,” he hums, mouth quirking into one of his slanted smiles. “And yet you never went?”
“No.” You squirm in the saddle, and almost unbidden the words rise. “It was not as if lady of my birth would be enough to tempt a prince.”
Beaumains lets out a low whistle. “If only you had known.”
Your cheeks heat. “Hush. You know nothing. The prince is merely as he ought to be with a peer.”
You mislike the smirk he wears. “Is he now?”
Zen slaps a hand on the table, loud enough to startle Shirayuki half out of her chair. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Kiki's eyes roll heavenward. “Here we go.”
“I didn’t say anything, your highness,” Obi says, every word dripping with insincerity. “Just was having a conversation.”
“Technically,” Mitsuhide chimes in weakly, in a vain attempt to derail the mounting argument, “Arturius would be ‘your grace—‘”
“Yeah, but there was a whole lot you weren’t saying,” Zen snaps back, “with your words.”
Obi’s mouth splits into too-wide a grin. “Pretty sure that’s how conversation works, boss. You don’t say all the words, but just the ones you need to—“
“You were implying things,” Zen clarifies. “Mean things!”
“Oh my god,” Kiki groans. “Can you guys go out and measure your dicks somewhere else—?“
“And deny you the pleasure of watching, Princess Kiki?” Obi claps back.
She lets out a huff. “--so Izana can curse us already.”
“I’m wounded,” Izana demures. “We’ve been playing a whole three hours and I haven’t even cursed you once.”
“Plenty of time left.”
“Hm.” His mouth twitches at a corner. “Whatever have I done to earn such a reputation?”
It’s chaos as the three of them trip over themselves to respond; Shirayuki can hardly make out the individual complaints, but they seem many and varied.
Obi blinks. “Well, it seems like your reputation precedes you, your majesty.”
Izana gives him a sideways glare. “Anyway. I believe we were about to come up on the castle, Lady Lynet. If you would roll me some Perception…”
It is shocking to see Laxdo now, a crackled, torn painting of your memory. It had been famed for its beauty, paving stones and trees woven over its approach, but the trees are dead now, their roots tearing up the road beneath, making the path a tricky proposition with the horses.
Still, you nurse hope in your heart, thinking it cannot be so bad as it seems –
And then you come upon the place itself, that grand edifice that had set you into raptures as a young girl – and it is ruined, stones choked by climbing vines, the great archway a crumbled ruin.
“No,” you breathe. “It isn’t possible.”
It is not Beaumains who falls in behind you as you fly through Laxdo’s courtyards. No, it is Bedwyr, his solid presence a comfort at your back. You cannot bear to look at the ruin, not when its glory is so alive in your mind’s eyes. You feel as if it madness will take you if you dare to view the whole of its destruction; better for you to deny it, at least for now. Better to believe this is not the grand castle you remember, but instead some other place, a world topsy-turvey from your own. Just merely a twisted reflection of what you once knew.
It is your hands that fling open the grand doors, that reveal the cracked tile and torn tapestry of the hall beyond. Your breath catches in your throat, but you cannot – cannot let that break you. There is yet a job to do.
A hand sits heavy on your shoulder, comforting, and though you have known him bare days, you do not hesitate to lean into Bedwyr’s touch.
“It will be all right,” he tells you with so much more confidence than you could ever muster in the face of such wanton destruction. “Arturius will see to it that things are put to rights.”
Your mouth pulls thin, and you turn your head away, lest he see your discomfort. You do not want some prince to fix this, some man who has never seen the walls of Laxdo in their glory, who had only seen its white stone and felt it paled in comparison to his home. It should be someone who knows what this place means, who appreciates its beauty –
It should be you. But it cannot be. If you cannot save her own sister, what right do you have to believe you could save Laxdo as well.
The dwarf hobbles up behind you, hovering at your heels as if he might speak. He is breathless, however, panting, and you wait for him to gain it again before you ask, voice as tempered as any steel, “Where are the patients?”
Your gaze sweeps the halls as you wait, taking in each crack, each ruined tapestry. It chills you to stand here in the entrance of this great castle while its lord is not here to greet you.
“In the great hall,” he manages finally, each word punctuated with a gasp. “They are laid out before the fire.”
“All of them?” Bedwyr asks, surprise naked in his words.
“Yes.” The dwarf shifts from one foot to the other, as if the bottoms of them itched to stand upon. “I could not very well leave them where they fell.”
Bedwyr regards him with a curious light in his eyes, and you can tell he wishes to ask more, to ask the exact fashion in which this small man dragged knights in their armor across the whole of the castle but –
But you can take it no longer. Your feet are fleet as a hind’s beneath you, hurrying you down the halls as if the wind lightened your heels. Bedwyr follows, his long strides keeping him only a step behind you in your flight.
Your heart pounds madly in your chest. The great hall. It has been years since you graced these shining corridors, and a child’s view, even in memory, is far different than an adult’s. You cannot trust what your mind shows you, what a child might estimate, but even as you draw close to the doors your heart fills with dread, for – for –
The door pushes open beneath your fingers, and your greatest fears are confirmed. The great hall of Laxdo is enormous, and every inch of its floor is covered with ailing men.
“What happened here?” Your voice barely raises to a whisper, the breath thin in your lungs. It should be impossible for such a sickness to happen, for it to take everyone in this way.
The dwarf only looks at you, forlorn, holding your gaze as if he could will the answer into you if only he tried long enough. As if there is something so obvious that if you only considered for a moment longer, you might discover it.
In the end, he only shakes his head. He cannot speak of it, and you cannot divine it. Magic you may have, but prognostication is beyond you.
Heels clack sharply on the tile behind you. “Is your master so powerful that he may silence you, dwarf?” Morgaine asks, steel in her voice, words made to cut. “Or is it that you actively wish to hinder us?”
“N-no!” He waves his hands in supplication, cringing away from the knight. “I wish only to help, I merely…cannot. Not in this way. I am only allowed to say they are ill, that it is a plague that has come upon us. All else…” He shrugs helpless. “I am not my own, my lady.”
“I want to look at them,” Shirayuki says, staring at the map. It glitters under the lights, small colorful stones marking where each sick man lies. There’s hardly any squares between them, all of them packed into the hall on top of each other. “The men, I mean.”
Izana sweeps out a hand. “Go right ahead.”
“No, I mean--” She bites her lip, thoughtful. “Is there something I can do to keep from catching this? I’m no good to anyone sick.”
“Roll Fort real good?” Obi offers with a laugh. “Your Con is better than mine, at least.”
“Because you’re an idiot,” Kiki informs him. “Some people think actual health points are important.”
He waves her off, turning up his nose. “I’ll be fine. I just won’t go in there ever.”
Shirayuki ignores the dip in her stomach. She needs to be focused on saving these men, not worried about whether she’ll get her chance to flirt with him –
Beaumains. Whether Lynet will get her chance to flirt with Beaumains.
It’s different. Probably.
“Could I…tie a damp cloth around my face?” she asks, rubbing her hands over her skirt, if only so no one will see them tremble. “That’s – that’s what they used to do, right? Back in the day.”
Izana stares at her, eyes rounded with surprise. “That’s…an admirable idea. I would say that might help you, should you need to roll to resist the disease.”
“Should you,” Obi laughs. “Like he isn’t going to make you the second you step in that room.”
His mouth curls, amused. “We’ll see.”
The air is humid in the hall, cloying, and your impromptu mask only makes it more so as you wade further in. There is hardly room to walk; you must watch your feet as you place them, careful not to crush fingers or kick ankles or trod on unbound hair. Hands reach out to you as you pass, though they grow thinner the more you walk, every step bringing you closer to those who have been sick the longest and are now the worst afflicted.
Fingers brush your ankle, and you only just withhold a shriek, peering down to see the man’s eyes roll back in his head, to hear the pained groan that tears from his weakened chest. You have seen less miserable frescoes of Tartarus, compared to this sick room.
You stoop down, close to one – or really, three or four of the sick men. Cloths are pressed to every forehead, as if such a feeble gesture could ward off the worst of this sickness. A child might have tended them better.
Your gaze hooks on the two small feet that shift uncertainly on the other side of your patient. Ah, perhaps one has. Or at least, a man who only knew as much as a child.
“What do you think?”
You blink, surprised at the sudden deepness of his voice, and raise your head –
Bedwyr stands to your side, expectant. Ah yes, that would – that would make more sense. Though now you can’t help but wonder if your other companion’s voice is the same as it was when he was a man, or –
You shake your head. Now is not the time for such speculation. “I do not know what to think. Where is the healer in this place? A physician?”
The dwarf shakes his shaggy head, the muddle hazel of his eyes mournful. One of his stick-like arms lifts, pointing, but when you follow its path the press of bodies is so tight you cannot make out its mark –
Ah, but that is his point. It does not matter who the healer is now, if he is here. A man off his feet with sickness does them no good, especially if he suffers as much as these men.
“There’s nothing for it,” you decide, coming to settle on your knees. “We’ll just have to do what we can.”
“Is it a Heal check to do this?” Shirayuki asks, peering up at Izana. He watches her curiously, chin perched on the heel of his hand.
“It quite frankly depends.” His eyebrows give an inquisitive lift. “Are you trying to identify the disease? Do you mean to heal them?”
“Yes, both.” She holds up a hand, shaking her head. “I know that’s two rolls, but I mean – to heal them. It’s a Heal check?”
“You can cast Cure spells without one,” Mitsuhide tells her gently, as if she has not been doing that nearly this whole session after the servitors kept punching holes through him and Zen. “Just pick which level and roll that die.”
“I know that,” she replies, struggling for politeness. “I meant naturally. Is there a way to do it with Heal?”
“Yes…” Izana tilts his head. “I hate to give advice on how to play, but…you understand it won’t be as effective as any of your spells, don’t you?”
She nods. “I know. I just was thinking…most of my brewed potions have been used, and I won’t have spell slots to spare until tomorrow, so if I can heal them naturally…I could help everyone tonight. Or at least, a good number of them.”
He blinks, long and slow. “What interesting reasoning. Yes, please, two Heal checks.”
Fever. Chills. Sweating. Pain there must be, somewhere in the body, though none are able to speak of it. A loss of lucidity. You’ve seen these symptoms before, dozens of times at least, but in this they are all new, not a single of your remedies doing anything more lasting than leaving a stain on a jerkin.
“I don’t understand.” You sit back on your heels, meeting Bedwyr’s dark eyes. “Even if this is a sickness unlike any I have seen, these should be doing something to alleviate their pain. Lessening a fever, easing the mind…but I might do better pouring water down their throats than tisanes.”
A heavy hand lands upon your shoulder, and you lean into the warmth. “Take a rest, my lady. Let me see what Our Lord in Heaven might do, should I pray for his intercession.”
You press your lips together, nodding. There were things a devout man might do that you cannot, or at least – cannot right now.
“Try that, then,” you sigh, levering yourself to your feet. “If that does not work, I have yet potions that might.”
“I’m going to Lay On Hands,” Mitsuhide announces collecting dice into his hands. Four d6s would be spilling out of hers, but he hold them with room to spare, plastic rattling as he shakes them. They pour onto the table, three sixes and one two, and with a grin he turns to Izana –
“No effect,” he says simply, leaning back in his chair. “Anything else you’d like to try?”
“That’s magical healing,” Mitsuhide pushes, agog. “Anything should be able to be healed by it.”
“Provided they need hit points restored.” Izana taps his chin with a thoughtful finger. “A cure only works for the ailment it’s made for. Now, other options?”
Obi clears his throat. “If you don’t mind, we--” he gestures to Zen and Kiki – “have an idea of our own.”
A single step from the room and you drag down you mask, gasping for the cool air of the hall. You had not realized how stifling the heat in that room, not until you are outside it, free from its grasp. You bend double, panting. Bedwyr will need his own rest when you are through, otherwise he too will forget the feel of fresh air upon his face.
It is only after you have caught your breath that you hear it, whispers raised to hearing by the echoes of the empty hall. It strikes you that it has been hours since you arrive – Lord in Heaven, it must be morning now, though it is impossible to tell without the chapel to ring the hours – and you have not seen the prince and his sister, nor your usually ubiquitous shadow.
That draws you up short. He had said that he would not step foot in a plague room, not for all the gold of Croesus, though you had not expected him to keep his word. He did not seem the sort to be daunted for long.
But it is his voice you hear mixed in with the others, no louder that a mocking murmur. It would be beyond propriety to eavesdrop on what is clearly a private conversation. Still, you draw closer, eager to hear some news that is not this worsening sickness –
“That sounds like a good way to get ourselves killed.” Morgaine’s laconic drawl is strident when it strikes against stone, even for all its softness. “You cannot possibly be considering this.”
“What choice do we have?” Arturius returns, the hint of petulance made large by the empty halls. “We cannot simply stand around here and do nothing.”
You can practically hear Morgaine raising a brow. “Are you saying that Beaumains is right?”
The prince sputters. “N-no! I just mean…that perhaps…ah…”
“It’s all right, your grace.” Beaumains somehow suffuses the title so much sarcasm it drips with the speaking of it. “I understand. You think I have a good idea.”
“I never said that!” he spits out, and as you turn the corner, his cheeks are just as red as you suspected. “It’s only--”
“You’re leaving?”
“Isn’t this a-a thing? That you’re not supposed to do?” Shirayuki darts a look at Izana, then at Mitsuhide, trying to find some sort of support. “Splitting the party.”
“Well, I don’t mind,” Izana drawls, mouth curling.
“Of course you don’t,” Zen snaps. “It’s the best way to TPK.”
Shirayuki blinks. “TPK?”
“Total Party Kill,” Mitsuhide explains with a dubious look at Izana. “It’s when the entire party is wiped out--”
Kiki snorts. “I think she can guess from the name.”
“T-that’s my point though,” she presses. “If we split up, we’re weaker, aren’t we? So we should really stay together.”
“Oh, I see what this is.” Obi grins, and she can already feel her skin flushing three shades darker. He leans in and that’s just – worse. “Is Lynet nervous without her bodyguard?”
“N-no!” She squirms back from him, trying to look in his eyes without feeling like barbecue. “It’s-it’s just logical!”
Nothing to do with the fact that she can’t test out Kihal’s advice if Obi – Beaumains is off on his own side adventure.
“I’ll be right here, Shirayuki,” Mitsuhide assures her, too kind. “Nothing can get past a Fighter/Paladin like Bedwyr.”
“Except for anything with a Dex mod,” Kiki deadpans.
He flushes. “I’m working on it!”
“You see?” Izana gives her a smile that somehow seems far more genuine than the ones before. “You’ll be just fine. And I’m sure you have much more to concern yourself with…”
Nothing works.
You have exhausted every trick in your bag – the panacea, the strongest antitoxin you have brewed, even the best of your restoratives – not a single one of them does anything besides a brief return of color to the cheeks, but in an hour it is gone again, the men still teetering on the brink of death.
“What next?” Bedwyr asks, every word a strain. Even still he is more optimistic than you – or perhaps, with how much you have tried, more foolish.
You sit back on your heels, rubbing a hand over your face. “There is nothing left. I do not--”
Your hand stills over your mouth, and that is when you realize – “My mask.” Your breath pants out harshly. “We’ve forgotten our masks.”
“You’ve been in the hall for how long?” Izana asks, too pleased. “I’m going to need you both to make Will saves.”
Mistuhide heaves a sigh, fishing through his bag for a d20, but Shirayuki –
“A Will save?” she asks haltingly.
Izana’s face turns to her, a smooth mask. “Yes.”
“It’s a curse,” you mutter, getting to your feet.
Bedwyr shakes his head, as if he’s trying to clear it. “What?”
“It’s not a plague, it’s a curse.” You survey the room, victory so close you can taste it. “It’s a curse, and it’s coming from--”
“I just have to tell you I’m detecting magic, right?” she asks, casting Izana an uncertain look.
“Why, yes.” He sits forward in his seat, steepling his fingers. “That is all you would need to do.”
“Okay.” She bites down on her lip. “I cast detect magic.”
The room is thick with miasma, like fog on the moors, hovering over every man. Your breath catches, and it takes conscious effort to breathe again, knowing it is there, knowing it could enter you. It doesn’t come from the men; no, it’s coming from somewhere in the room. You squint, trying to find its source, noticing how it’s thinnest by the doors and thickest by the hearth –
The fire. O Lord, the fire.
You rock to your feet. “Douse it!”
Bedwyr stares up at you, uncomprehending.
“The fire!” you shout. “Douse it! It’s spreading the curse!”

Purina vs IAMS
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/51oF4IDUbAL.jpg When I was younger, pretty much everyone fed their dog Purina or IAMS.
They were household brands and, at the time, two of just a few brands commonly seen in the grocery stores.
Not to sound like an old lady here, but back in my day, there weren’t big chain pet stores, and there weren’t any pet boutiques.
So, what happened to dog food companies like Purina and IAMS when the dog food market exploded?
I still see them on the shelves, but I tend to walk by them without thought.
However, I recently found out that my mom buys Purina for her dog. I was more than surprised to hear this and found out that it was our vet that recommended it.
I trust our vet and always go with their recommendations, but I couldn’t help but wonder why of all brands she would recommend Purina.
Are Mainstream Food Brands Any Good?
Vets are recommending this dog food now?
The last time I was in with one of my dogs for a check-up, I had to ask about her food recommendation.
My vet said she understood my surprise, but that brands like Purina and IAMS have really improved the quality and varieties of foods they offer.
Over the last several years, they have been forced to change to keep up with the growing market.
She also pointed out that the boutique foods are under scrutiny by the FDA as to the long-term effects concerning dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).
The concern with the “boutique” foods is that they believe the grain-free foods are the cause of the increase in cases of dogs suffering from DCM.
So, many veterinarians are falling back on more tried and true brands such as Purina and IAMS.
Then at the end of my visit, the vet suggested I try ALPO kibble for Daisy.
She laughed at the look on my face when she suggested it. But she stated that it is a balanced diet and a lot of seniors that are picky eaters, like Daisy, tend to like it.
Purina’s Company History
Purina has a very long history, stretching as far back as 1894[1].
Back then it went by the name of Robinson-Danforth Commission Company for two of the three founders.
In 1902, they changed the name to Ralston Purina.
They originally started as a farm animal food company but over the years evolved into one of the biggest dog food companies in the industry.
In 1987, Purina shared their findings after a fourteen-year research project. The research proved feeding your dog appropriate foods throughout the different life stages can significantly impact the health and longevity of your dog.
In 1988, Purina launched the first hypoallergenic food that isolated the allergens and removed them from the food, creating a diet that was nutritious as well as safe for dogs with food allergies to eat.
Over the next years, Purina continued to grow, both in the pet food industry but also in different markets such as treats, dental chews, probiotics, and more.
In 2001, Nestle purchased Purina, making Purina a globally recognized name.
As of 2018 Purina is the second-largest dog food company in the world[2].
Purina’s 3 Best Sellers
Purina One Smart Blend – Chicken and rice
Purina One Smart Blend is a balanced food for adult dogs that don’t have special dietary requirements.
The food is enhanced with antioxidants to promote a robust immune system.
Purina Pro Plan Focus – Sensitive skin and stomach
Purina Pro Plan Focus is formulated to be rich in fatty acids to help improve good skin health.
Also, it has been enhanced with prebiotics for a healthy digestive system. Purina Pro Plan is not a hypoallergenic food, and it does contain grains.
Purina Pro Plan SAVOR– Shredded blend with chicken and rice
Purina Pro Plan Savor is a highly digestible food containing prebiotics and probiotics to promote good digestive health.
This food has both dry kibble and shredded soft dog food to provide a more appealing texture for your dog.
IAMS’ Company History
IAMS started in 1946 by Paul IAMS.
Paul IAMS would later launch the first animal-protein rich dog food, which was named IAMS 999.
In the 1980’s, IAMS introduced their life stage dog formulas.
Then, in the 1990s, IAMS launched their natural dog food line and publicized their findings regarding the positive effects of fatty acids on a dog’s skin and coat.
IAMS was privately owned until 1999, when Procter and Gamble purchased it[3]. When P&G purchased IAMS Co, they announced their intentions of expanding IAMS globally.
Later in the 2000s, IAMS brought their most advanced dog food formula line, Premium Protection, to market. Premium protection is a specially formulated food for puppies.
Finally, in 2014, MARS company announced the purchase of IAMS from P&G[4]. MARS is the largest dog food company in the world.
IAMS’ 3 Best Sellers
IAMS Proactive Health Adult – Chicken MiniChunks
IAMS Proactive Health is an excellent all-around food for adult dogs.
Chicken is the first ingredient in this formula, followed by corn and whole grain sorghum. It also contains beet pulp and prebiotics for healthy digestive systems.
IAMS Proactive Health – Large breed with chicken
Farm-raised chicken is the main ingredient in this food.
The chicken and chicken fat are a good source of glucosamine and chondroitin, which promotes healthy joints[5].
Like the other Proactive Health recipes, it contains an abundance of nutrients and vitamins to ensure a balanced diet.
IAMS Proactive Health Smart Puppy – Large breed
This food is designed to help large breed puppies grow and develop at the proper pace. It also contains Omega-3 DHA to aid in brain development.
Finally, it has been enriched with 22 nutrients that are found in the puppy’s mother’s milk.
Purina Recalls
Purina has only had one dog food recall in the last ten years.
In August 2013 there was a recall (that included only one food, Purina ONE Beyond) due to possible Salmonella poisoning[6].
IAMS Recalls
No aflatoxin any more!
IAMS has had two dog food recalls in the last ten years.
In December 2011 there was recall (for only one food, Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy) due to possible aflatoxin contamination[7].
Then, in August 2013, there were six dry dog foods involved in a recall[8]. The recall was due to suspected salmonella contamination.
Healthy Naturals Weight Control Adult
Healthy Naturals Chicken Adult
Premium Protection Chicken
ProActive Health Small Breed
ProActive Health Large Breed
ProActive Health Large Chunks
Since the 2013 recall, IAMS has not had any additional recalls.
What’s Important When Choosing a Dog Food?
There is a multitude of components that go into deciding on the ideal dog food.
Often, we only think of ingredients, and though that is a significant part of the decision process, it isn’t the only factor to take into consideration.
Other things specific to your dog’s dietary health requirements are essential when picking the right dog food.
Also, there are aspects of the decision-making process that do not have anything to do with your dog. But these elements are still essential when deciding on the best food for your dog.
There are two tiers to consider when deciding on the right dog food for your pooch.
The first tier is made up of factors that directly relate to your dog’s specific needs, like:
Weight
Breed (German Shepherds and Goldendoodles do better on different foods)
Activity Level
Size
Age (the best dog food will change as your dog grows from puppy to adult)
Health – Various diseases like Cushing’s, heart disease, diabetes, and kidney disease, and GI issues
The second tier is made up of less critical, but still significant elements like:
Availability
Taste (what your dog thinks)
Price
Where the food is manufactured
Where the ingredients are sourced
Comparison of Purina vs. IAMS
Ingredients
Winner: IAMS
This was close, as the majority of the ingredients are similar.
However, I chose IAMS because of the additional superfoods found in their Proactive Health blend.
I compared each of the best sellers: Purina One Smart Blend Chicken and Rice and IAMS Proactive Health Adult Minichunks.
IAMS Proactive Health Adult Minichunks’ ingredients list
Purina’s first ingredient is chicken, which is one of the natural sources for glucosamine.
Also, this food contains a variety of grains rice, wheat, and corn. There are a lot of added vitamins and nutrients listed, but not a lot of superfoods like spinach or blueberries.
However, they do use a variety of kibble to enhance the texture of the food.
IAMS first ingredient is also chicken, followed by two different grains.
IAMS also includes dried beet pulp to enhance the digestibility and promote good GI health. Also, this blend includes superfoods like blueberries, spinach, and apples.
Price/Value
Winner: IAMS
The average price per pound for IAMS is a hair over one dollar per pound. For Purina, it’s three cents more expensive per pound.
The ingredients are pretty similar, but IAMs won because of the additional superfoods.
Combined with the ingredients and lower price, IAMS won for price and value as well.
Availability
Winner: Purina
Both brands can be found at the larger pet stores and online.
However, Purina is also available at more grocery stores and some boutique pet stores.
Varieties
Winner: Purina
Purina is the winner with 96 unique recipes.
Purina Varieties
Purina has 96 different dry dog foods listed on their website. There are 7 different lines within these 96 foods.
Purina One – 18 Varieties
Purina Pro Plan – 41 Varieties
Purina Dog Chow – 10 Varieties
Beneful – 11 Varieties
Beyond – 9 Varieties
Bella – 2 Varieties
ALPO – 2 Varieties
Amongst these lines, they have specific recipes for seniors, puppies, large breeds, giant breeds, toy breeds, small breeds, weight management, hypoallergenic, skin and stomach sensitivities, grain-free, and sport.
IAMS Varieties
IAMS has 21 different dry dog foods listed on their website. These 21 foods are broken down into three categories:
Nutrition Tailored to a Dog’s Age and Size – 8 Varieties
Nutrition Tailored to a Dog’s Unique Dietary Needs – 4 Varieties
Nutrition Tailored to a Dog’s Breed – 6 Varieties
Within these three lines, there are specific recipes for weight management, grain-free, and high protein.
Taste
Winner: IAMS
Even though the ingredients look similar to me, IAMS was the winner by a landslide.
I can’t even begin to imagine what IAMS has that Purina does not.
Never mind, yes, I can imagine.
Purina has the “tender meaty morsels,” which I thought dogs would prefer over standard dry kibble, but I guess I was proved wrong.
X-Factor
Winner: Purina
Both companies support their communities, but Purina’s work stood out more to me.
Purina:
Donates $10,000,000 annually to Rescue Bank[9]. Rescue Bank aids animal rescues through donating foods from various animal food vendors.
Supports Leader Dogs for the Blind.
Partners with local animal shelters all over the US.
Supports Adopt a Pet.
Supports Duo Dogs, a program that connects dogs and people to help enhance their lives.
Supports Dogs on Deployment assisting troops in finding a safe place to board their pets while on deployment.
Partnered with St. Louis Children’s Hospital and funded a room for children to be able to visit with their pets while staying in the hospital.
Red Rover and Purina started the Purple Leash Project to aid in keeping victims of domestic violence together with their pets in February 2019[10].
In addition to these ongoing partnerships, Purina also has donated money or food to help:
Pets and people impacted by tornadoes and flooding in the Midwest during June 2019.
Pets and people impacted by both Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael in 2018[11].
Build a dog park inside a domestic violence shelter in 2018[12].
Overall
Winner: Purina
Purina is the overall winner because of their large variety and X factor.
The massive array of food Purina offers is impressive. I think it would be hard not to find a food that would meet a dog’s dietary needs.
Also, with the ability to find Purina almost anywhere is a big bonus.
The X factor doesn’t always make a significant impact on the decision-making process, but I am enamored with companies that support their communities.
Final Thoughts
I am honestly surprised at how impressed I am with the two brands.
Both companies surprised me with how much they have evolved over the years. They each offer an impressive selection of quality dog food, and they both have fewer recalls than I had expected.
I didn’t expect they would have higher recalls because I thought they were terrible brands but because of the volume of food they produced and sold.
Both Purina and IAMS are companies that I would confidently recommend to friends and families looking for a specialty dog food.
Occasionally, after researching a dog food company, I come away disappointed.
However, today I am happy to say both companies impressed me with the quality of food they offer.

CAT TEETH
Kittens are born with no visible teeth, however deciduous teeth eventually start growing out around three weeks of ages and they become completely visible by four months. Around eleven weeks of age, temporary kitten teeth start to grow. During this period, you might find tiny teeth on then floor, in your kitten food bowl or you might not see anything at all because kittens tend to swallow their teeth. Morning further, adult cats have 30 permanent cat teeth, while kittens have 26 baby cat teeth.
WHAT IS RETAINED TOOTH A retained tooth occurs when the root of a tooth did not completely resorb or did not resorb at all. In situations like this, the baby tooth unfortunately occupies the place meant for permanent tooth in the mouth of a cat. This eventually forces the permanent tooth to erupt at an abnormal angle or in an abnormal position. The end result is often crowding or mal-position of the tooth, therefore causing an abnormal bite.
PROBLEMS CAUSED BY RETAINED TEETH Situations where a deciduous tooth and a permanent tooth at in the same socket in the jaw, it will lead to crowding of the two teeth which will increase the likelihood of food and debris being trapped between the cat teeth. This can lead to problems such as tartar deposits, tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis, all of which can lead to premature loss of cat teeth. Also, if the root of the retained tooth has only been partly resorbed, it can become severely infected. This can also lead to problems like tartar deposits, tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis which can lead to premature loss of cat teeth.
Note: it is paramount to check your kitten’s mouth every week until about six to seven months of age to ensure that his teeth are growing normally. If you find any retained teeth or even suspect that your kitten has an abnormal bite, quickly take him to your local veterinarian clinic for an oral examination.
DENTAL CARE FOR CATS It is common for nearly 90% of cats to develop dental problems over their lifetime. By age four, many cats tend to have developed significant gingivitis and others also tend to develop periodontal disease. Although it is a slow progressing disease, it still causes serious pain and affects the overall health and wellbeing of your cat. With cats, showing signs of oral discomfort is rare because the pain associated with dental oriented comes on slowly over time, thereby, they simply learn how to live with the pain. Poor dental health will result to more than just rooting teeth and gums, it can result to upper respiratory infections, heart and even kidney disease. Your cats lifespan is shortened to 2-5 years with poor dental health. For more details click cat gestation period
CAT DENTAL CLEANING Adequate dental care is one of the best ways to help keep your cat’s teeth and gums healthy and in good shape. Brushing your cats teeth can be quite difficult, so it is important to start as early as possible so he/she can get accustomed to the process.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOOTHBRUSH It is advisable to purchase a toothbrush specifically made for cats, this toothbrush would be softer and smaller than your own toothbrush. If you prefer, you can choose to use a toothbrush that you wear on your finger.
https://amzn.to/2RT02Jz
USE TOOTHPASTE FOR CATS Do not use your own toothpaste for your cat, human toothpaste can contain ingredients like fluoride and xylitol which are toxic for cats. Cat toothpaste are a better choice, plus they come in tempting flavor like poultry or beef, which can help the process of brushing.
https://amzn.to/2PR6xz4
INTRODUCE THE TOOTHBRUSH Slowly introduce the toothbrush your cat by allowing him/her to examine and sniff the toothbrush. You can also try dipping it in a bit of tuna water to attract your cats attention. You can also offer a small taste of the toothpaste, all to build familiarity.
MASSAGE THE GUMS You can help get your cat familiar with the feeling of having their teeth brushed by starting with a gum massage. Be careful when doing so and massage gently with your finger. You can do this repeatedly until your cat seems comfortable with the experience.
START BRUSHING SLOWLY When you feel that you and your cat are ready, carefully lift the lips to expose the teeth and start brushing gently in slow, circular motions. Try your best to reach the back molars and canines, since plaque and tartar tend to accumulate there more often.
REWARDING Also to ease the experience and make it fun, ensure to reward your cat for being so patient while you brush her teeth with either a treat or play. Ideally, you should brush your cat’s teeth every day or at least 5 times a week, It’s helpful to look at it as a time to bond with your cat rather than a dreaded activity. If you are having trouble brushing your cat’s teeth, ask your veterinarian for advice.
ALTERNATIVES TO BRUSHING YOUR CATS TEETH In addition to brushing your cat’s teeth, you can take other actions to ensure that she keeps her pearly white cat teeth clean. Alternative things like chew toys and oral gels, along with specifically formulated dental treats and food can slow the formation of tartar and avoid the onset of dental disease.

WHAT IS RETAINED TOOTH
A retained tooth occurs when the root of a tooth did not completely resorb or did not resorb at all. PROBLEMS CAUSED BY RETAINED TEETH
Situations where a deciduous tooth and a permanent tooth at in the same socket in the jaw, it will lead to crowding of the two teeth which will increase the likelihood of food and debris being trapped between the cat teeth.
DENTAL CARE FOR CATS
It is common for nearly 90% of cats to develop dental problems over their lifetime.
CAT DENTAL CLEANING
Adequate dental care is one of the best ways to help keep your cat’s teeth and gums healthy and in good shape. Brushing your cats teeth can be quite difficult, so it is important to start as early as possible so he/she can get accustomed to the process.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOOTHBRUSH
It is advisable to purchase a toothbrush specifically made for cats, this toothbrush would be softer and smaller than your own toothbrush. If you prefer, you can choose to use a toothbrush that you wear on your finger.

USE TOOTHPASTE FOR CATS
Do not use your own toothpaste for your cat, human toothpaste can contain ingredients like fluoride and xylitol which are toxic for cats. Cat toothpaste are a better choice, plus they come in tempting flavor like poultry or beef, which can help the process of brushing.

INTRODUCE THE TOOTHBRUSH
Slowly introduce the toothbrush your cat by allowing him/her to examine and sniff the toothbrush. You can also try dipping it in a bit of tuna water to attract your cats attention. You can also offer a small taste of the toothpaste, all to build familiarity.
MASSAGE THE GUMS
You can help get your cat familiar with the feeling of having their teeth brushed by starting with a gum massage. Be careful when doing so and massage gently with your finger. You can do this repeatedly until your cat seems comfortable with the experience.
START BRUSHING SLOWLY
When you feel that you and your cat are ready, carefully lift the lips to expose the teeth and start brushing gently in slow, circular motions. Try your best to reach the back molars and canines, since plaque and tartar tend to accumulate there more often.

Lynn 22
Lynn had asked if I was cold and I said that I was anxious cold and she didn’t really seem to get what I meant LOL but she turned the heat on anyway because she was cold. She asked me how I was doing and I said good and I asked her if she was feeling better. She said that she was and ask how my week has been. I told her I basically had to list on my phone and would look back at my Tumblr because there was a few things I wanted to talk to her about. I first updated her on the meeting with my friend and how that had gone well and that I was feeling good about it. She said she was glad it had gone better than we had anticipated and that the loan forgiveness part would be great. I told her about how I had had decreased anxiety around seeing people vomit on TV and in the YouTube videos and town that was incredible considering I’ve never been able to watch it on TV without going into a full panic. Then I updated her on how things had gone with my mom, and home I had felt upset when my mom talked about spending the whole day with the foster girl hannaha and how I had gotten upset with feeling that I wanted to highlight Natalie him as my recovery hero but also realizing that that could really hurt my mom’s feelings. We talked about the picture and what it would mean to have Natalie is my recovery hero and basically the conclusion was that it’s OK for me to be considerate and not want to put the picture up simply out of respect for her feelings and not wanting to hurt them, although it would be completely fine if I did want to post it because Natalie is my recovery hero. She asked if I think my mom thinks she’s my recovery hero and I explained that I think my mom definitely thinks that we are a lot closer than we actually are although I don’t know how she would come to the conclusion that she’s the recovery cover hero simply because it’s not something we ever discuss. We talked about the possibility of doing a more vague post so that I can still highlight Natalie without feeling like I’m really hurting my mom. We talked about what might happen with my mom if I were to post it, and she basically said that would be great practice for me to do the Whole well my husband’s calling I have to hang up or yeah it was just something I posted and then change the subject. She talked about how I need to practice setting those boundaries now because it will be worse when I have children. She mentioned that in thinking of the fact that I was 19 when I met Natalie, her daughters are about to turn 19 this week, and for her if they were to post something about another woman being one of their heroes, it wouldn’t bother her because she’s able to step back and recognize that it’s a healthy part of their development too attached to other people and that’s OK. But that she knows my mom is definitely not anywhere near close to that place of healthiness and wouldn’t be able to step back and acknowledge that.
She asked where I wanted to start and I said I wasn’t sure. She asked if maybe we could start with my original target since I had realized the improvement with the vomiting. I said that was fine and I focused on that and said the part that still bothers me is the sound of him throwing up and that I had also remembered what it looked like because it was the Tyson chicken and brown rice with salad. She said to just notice that and I recalled that my mom had give me a really disapproving look and was condescending about how I needed to just eat it, even though my phobia of vomiting prevented me from eating that particular meal since I had seen my brother throw it up. I remembered feeling really misunderstood and angry and that I had ended up eating dog kibble after and that was the first time that I cried and told my parents that I was going to starve to death and they responded that no one ever starve to death with the plate of food in front of them. I said that I guess there was a constant and big power struggle with it where I would refuse to eat and couldn’t. I said I guess that I had a power struggle with food for as long as I can remember, and then I had been trying in ways to hard or workaround food since I was a kid. I felt guilty for not trying harder to eat other foods and that I remember eating at my next-door neighbors house Michelle and trying to eat peas which was something that I didn’t like. While I initially said that, in further processing I realized that I had stolen the America’s choice pop tarts out of the cupboard after dinner because I was still hungry and that I had picked out the peas and not eaten them. I Knology that Michelle wasn’t allowed to pick up the keys, and that it had felt like special treatment because Michelle had always said that her mom liked me better because I was good at everything. At some point in the conversation, Lynn mentioned that her daughter is also extremely picky and even now in college eats Chick-fil-A like every day, and she still pretty healthy and it works for her. I had explained that I was frustrated because there are people like my husband who said their parents said to finish everything on their plate and they just did it, but I wasn’t able to do that.
I remember that everyone, including my grandpa had said that I was just too damn picky and that my mom had always describe me as being too stubborn. I remembered that I had made a huge list for my grandpa wear one and a half pages was foods that I do not like and there was only like five or six things that I did like on the sheet and I remember he had gotten mad because he said he was not going to feed me macaroni and cheese and chocolate pudding for breakfast. I remembered that his wife her name was a lot more compassionate and that she would tell him she would help me pick out something to eat and she would offer multiple choices of things that I can have. I remembered how I would sit in the windowsill and watch the trains passed by every night especially when I was feeling kind of sad or lonely and I remembered that when I would sing me a lullaby as if I couldn’t sleep. I remembered that she would let me try to scrub off her freckles when I took a bath and she never really corrected me or told me it was a waste of time even though she gently said she didn’t think they would come off. We played a geography game together and she never corrected me for using the same Yonkers for the Y and I guess that she was just really good and patient in therapeutic with me because she let me be me without correcting everything I did. I remembered how well Renée had handled my fear around fire because Renée was Jewish and had a candle menorah and that I had gotten really anxious about the candles burning the apartment down especially because the windows were barred and she had explained to me why they weren't going to burn all the way down and she said she would check on it for me and even though I felt anxious and still checked on it on my own, she had explained everything and that helped. She asked me how often I still see Renée and I teared up and said I wasn’t sure if I would ever see her again because she is now in a home with Alzheimer’s and my mom texted today and said my grandpa is actually going to counseling because of his guilt around putting her in a home.
Lynn encouraged me to really think about whether or not May being, what my mom said was stubborn, was really a bad thing. Of course I explained that it certainly felt like a bad thing because it always felt like there was something wrong with me for being picky or not liking things. She pointed out that Renée was able to get me to eat because she offered choices and found things that I liked, and how different things would have been if my parents hadn’t been so rigid. She pointed out that my parents engaged in a power struggle that they didn’t need to have, and how just like Trump says he’s going to force people to do things, you can’t force people to do things because they will dig their heels in and not do it. She reminded me how much easier meals were with Renée because she let me find things that I liked rather than forcing me to eat things I didn’t. She asked me if we were to imagine a family sitting in front of me, how might I reframe and describe why the child to stubbornness or resolve could be a strength or a good thing. I explained that I guess I was resourceful because I found other ways to get food, like with my secret stash or in stealing food from the neighbors homes. We left about how she was really trying and it was obvious that I kept going down a negative Nancy path but she really wanted me to see that it could also be a strength that I was stubborn if my parents had worked around it in a different way. She brought up Elizabeth Warren and how she had read Martin Luther King’s wives letter about Jeff sessions and how the Senate had turned it down, and how there is now this sort of global phrase of nonetheless she persisted or something because of people like Elizabeth Warren who are stubborn about justice. She laughed and she said she was trying to get me to think outside the box as to why that could be a good thing, and I laughed and said that I knew she was trying to get me to look for some empathy but it's just hard. I said that when I think about me being a little kid and empathy I do you feel sadness and I realize that no little kid should be so hungry that they sneak into the pantry and eat dry pasta..
She said that she really liked my train memory and we wrapped up. She said she wanted to ask me something, and said that she was traveling to New York City tomorrow and wanted to know if her flying into Newark if there would be a train that goes straight into Penn station and another one into the World Trade Center. She said that she would be going to visit her daughter because her daughter was having a scope put in to check her vocal chords and her daughter is the one who sings and is in school for musical theater. She told me that she ended up picking that school because they were willing to give her the most money, and they felt that overall that would be a great place for connections and because whenever she is done with school if she wanted to move to New York City, she would already know people and it wouldn’t be as much of an adjustment. She said that she was going to go home because she felt like that was kind of a big deal of a doctors appointment and she didn’t want her to have to go alone, even though she had been there two weeks ago for her daughter’s first play. She told me that there are super cheap tickets through allegiant Airlines and that’s why she’s been able to go back-and-forth so much. She said that her son is a junior in high school and that they’re already pushing for him to figure out his major and he stressed and feels like he supposed to have it all figured out already. She said that he also sings really well and she thinks that if you wanted to get into musical theater he could do well, but he’s not sure that that’s something he really wants to devote everything to. She said that he’s considering possibly video design and writing for players instead or doing a minor in Theatre. I said that made sense and that theater was similar to ministry in the fact that if you’re talented you don’t always necessarily need to have a degree to do well with it or to do it at all. She agreed and said that he’s looking at schools in Tennessee and Texas but she’s not sure where he will go. She said that she was on her way to go fix a broken car, and I joked and told her that she needed to just go buy one tomorrow while she’s in New York. She said it’s not for her car it’s actually for her sons and I joked and said she needed to just go buy him a car in New York then because she would save thousands of dollars on a new car. She laughed and said she’ll think about it and I headed out.
