My Facebook Page's Comments Section Wanted A QB Rankings Article. Now You'll Suffer, Too
For the record, I hate QB ranking articles. I hate listicles. I hate blogs that force writers to do listicles (and still don’t pay flat fees for them). Unfortunately, however, I have fostered a community of degenerates, and us degenerates love a chance to spew hot takes from the fires of Lake Minnetonka. We love to see who has the balls to go out on a limb and defend themselves in the comments section.
We’re barbarians. Heathens, even.
As we revel in the hilarity, however, we also practice a slight bit of intellectualism. Here at 904 SAD, you can have any opinion you want.
Well, as long as you can back it up.
This is why writing an article about the best returning quarterbacks in college football is difficult for me. Shedeur Sanders was the best QB in HBCU football last year, but North Carolina Central’s signal caller (and his Right Guard) put on a clinic in the Celebration Bowl last year. Also, NFL wise, we can’t tell who is worse between Zach Wilson and Trey Lance. Mainly because Trey Lance never plays. All that aside, Zach Wilson and Trey Lance were superstars at BYU (a Group of 5 Independent) and North Dakota State (a 1-AA powerhouse). They both went in the Top 3 of the NFL Draft and each of their franchises regret the picks to this day.
So, pro-level projections aren’t gonna be a thing in this article.
A numbered list won’t be present either.
Instead, we are going to use the written word to find out who the *best* returning starter in FBS or FCS college football is. Sorry D2, D3, NAIA, and NJCAA gunslingers. I’m not being an elitist. Unfortunately, us small school alums know all too well that you’re just gonna end up transferring to a D1 school the first chance you get either way (Why, Austin Reed? Why?).
THE LANDSCAPE
is shit.
Even if you take out the pro potential of the guys available for evaluation, Caleb Williams probably shouldn’t have won the Heisman last year. Come to think of it, Drake Maye wasn’t even a finalist for the damn thing. Unfortunately, that happens when you go 9-5 with a Power 5 schedule. Meaning ya lost 5 games. Meaning it’s hard to be the best player in college football when you can’t beat the best players in college football at least ten times (Lamar Jackson Somewhere: Hey!).
Also, picking Caleb Williams or Drake Maye is too easy. I mean, after all, the correct answer is either one of them. One is being coached by Lincoln Riley and the other one is what Arch Manning is supposed to be.
To make matters even worse, there are a lot of pedestrian fifth-year seniors and pandemmy-waiver dynamos who haven’t even broken 5,000 yards in their entire careers yet. There's also guys like Bo Nix who had one of the best offensive lines in the world, put up some phenomenal stats his first year in a new environment, and still couldn’t leverage his years of SEC experience to make a real run in the Pacific 12. 10-3 ain’t a bad record at all, but Oregon has been pumping out future Hall of Famers and All-Pros for years now. Eventually, somebody has to do what Marcus Mariota did that one time (That One Guy In The Distance: make a fuckin’ playoff, you dorks!).
So, winning obviously has to be a metric when determining who the best returning starter is. Before you guys start: Yes, I’m about to be extremely hypocritical. I wouldn’t be a proper sports journalist (*DEEP COUGH*) if I wasn’t.
MARK GRONOWSKI - South Dakota State
This MF has already led SDSU to the FCS Championship Game TWICE. Once in the spring (that one pandemmy season) and once in the fall last season. Did I mention that Gronowski is going into his Junior year? No? Well, did I tell you that he’s 22-3 as a starter? No? Damn, did I tell you that he’s been a team captain since 2022?
This man is a WINNER, son.
While Group of 5 guys are stat padding in the basement of the Bowl Subdivision, this man is sending an entire state to a promised land it never knew existed.
Throwing or running for a TD against Iowa would have been nice (would have won them the game in a blowout, actually), but at least he didn’t do what sooooo many FCS guys do against Power 5 teams early in the season: completely tank his squad’s chances of winning. Also, you know a QB has the juice when he is winning for programs that are never televised (ESPN+ matters!), rarely have guys taken in the draft (i’m including RD 7, too), and are in parts of the country that have less than 900,000 people in the entire state. Yes, you read that correctly. There are more bandwagon Patriots fans left over from 2018 than the entire state of South Dakota has residents. Gronowski is doing the Lord’s work.
SAM HARTMAN - Notre Dame
Wake Forest would like a word. Sam Hartman is so honored to play for the great cathedral that is Our Lady in Christ, but he made his initial set of bones playing for a…wait…huh? That can’t be right.
How can a Deacon be from Hell?
Anyway, Hartman is a 17th year senior who has 12,967 passing yards under his belt. Unless he has a season BETTER Joe Burrow’s in 2019, he won’t be catching Case Keenum’s all-time record for career passing yards (19,217). HOWEVER, Hartman only needs a measly 1,112 yards to pass Rakeem Cato for 10th all-time in the history of college football. That certainly makes him a name my list should respect, as Hartman also has the chance to play for a program with the resources, tools, and schedule to make a run for the College Football Playoff. This means the Irish signal caller could net that elusive First Team All-American nod he needs to be eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame.
Storylines, people. Storylines.
SHEDEUR SANDERS - Colorado
HEY, why are you booing me??? I’m right!
Sheduer Sanders led Jackson State to its most relevant era on the field in a minute. Yeah, he lost both Celebration Bowls, but the developing star led his team to a 23-3 record while he was under center. Sanders also won the Jerry Rice Award (Best FCS Freshman), the Deacon Jones Award (Best HBCU All-Around Player), and the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2022.
Look, you asked me who the best returning starters in the country were. I answered the question (lul).
Entering into his first Power 5 season, Sanders will have a lot to prove in the Pac-12. Like Sam Hartman, Sanders’ prolific production at his previous school was not enough to earn him a First-Team All-American honor. That means the Head-Buffalo-in-Charge (the Chief Buffalo is his daddy) will probably need to make the College Football Playoff for the first time as a starter to make the media tides swing his way.
JORDAN TRAVIS - Florida State
Mike Norvell probably gets fired if Jordan Travis doesn’t turn the corner last year.
After years of development and struggle, Jordan Travis tossed the rock for over 3,000 yards, led his compadres to a 10-win season, thrashed the Florida Gators (who had a Top 5 NFL Draft pick under center [LUL]), and won a bowl against….
Wait, FLORIDA STATE BEAT OKLAHOMA?!
AUSTIN REED - Western Kentucky
Former National Champion? Check (2019 for West Florida)
Bonkers ass single-season as a passer? Check (9-5 record with 389 completions, 602 pass attempts, 4,744 yards, 40 TDs, and 11 picks in 2022)
CUSA Newcomer of the Year Award? Check (2022)
Bowl game win WITH the MVP to match? CheckCheck (2022 New Orleans Bowl)
The resume speaks for itself. Yes, the National Title for West Florida was won in Division 2, but Reed made the MEGA D2 to FBS jump last year and did the best thing Western Kentucky (or any CUSA team for that matter) could hope to do - Win. A. Bowl. Game. And guess what, he’s suiting up for a college football team in 2023.
Which means….(Isiah Thomas: I fit the criteria).
CAMERON RISING - Utah
Played against the Heisman Winner in the 2022 Pac-12 Championship Game and blew the Heisman Winners’ Malibu doors off the frame and the hinges.
Was efficient and accurate all year with a 64.7% completion percentage.
20-8 record as a starter with 2 Pac-12 Championships to his name.
Uh, yeah. Cue the Isiah Thomas ad-lib again. (Isiah Thomas: I fit the criteria).
AFTER THIS BATCH OF GUYS,
the list gets murky.
Spencer Rattler was supposed to be the #1 overall pick. Then he sucked. Then he transferred to South Carolina and got…hmm.
DJ Uiagalelei got Dabo Sweeney to do something he’s never done before: Give up on his guys. Before we knew it, DJU was benched for a Freshman and Coach Sweeney started looking for new coordinators to replace his new coordinators. Damn, son; that ain’t good.
Bo Nix has a chance to break out (like, REALLY break out), but what will it lead to? Will pretty numbers be enough to win? Or will it all just lead to some team taking a “flyer” on him in the 4th round? We’ll see.
Jalon Daniels? Ha.
Jayden Daniels? Ha. Ha.
Tyler Van Dyke? Ha. Ha. Ha.
Emory Jones? HA. HA. HAAAAAAAAA.
SO, YEAH
The past 2 NFL Drafts have taken a lot out the sport. Even if I scour the rest of the FCS and Group of 5, I’m not gonna find a guy who’s better than Caleb Williams or Drake Maye. That means I have to make a decision based on the guys I already named in this article. And with that, I choooooooseee…
FLORIDA STATE QB JORDAN TRAVIS: The Man Who Saved Multiple Families From A Cold Winter.
Well, not Odell Haggins’. That man ain’t ever gettin fired.

Enjoy all of our conversations with players and other personalities in one place.
SB Nation’s team brands were well represented in Miami during the week leading up to Super Bowl LIV. We’ve got a ton of content we want to share with you, and you can find links to it all below.
Pete Sweeney from Arrowhead Pride and Kyle Posey from Niners Nation are on the team beats, bringing you the latest and greatest on the Chiefs and 49ers right up through the game on Sunday. RJ Ochoa from Blogging the Boys spent the week on Radio Row with SB Nation’s NFL associate director Jeanna Thomas and podcasts executive producer John Gennaro having fascinating conversations with NFL stars, draft prospects, and other personalities.
We’ve put all of that coverage right here for your enjoyment.
Nick Mangold, former New York Jets C
Mangold talked about his first concert (Black Sabbath at Wright State University’s Nutter Center when he was 13 years old) and shared some insight on the ideal sleeping temperature for offensive linemen.
Kyle Turley, former Saints, Rams, and Chiefs OT
Turley insists cannabis saved his life, and he’s using his platform to help others learn about the health benefits. He shared his outlook on the Chiefs, Rams, and Saints, too.
Marshall Newhouse, NFL free agent OT
Newhouse was drafted by the Packers, and he was most recently with the Patriots. He talked about the retirement of Dante Scarnecchia, what Tom Brady’s really like, and the Patriot way.
Todd Fuhrman, Fox betting analyst
If you’re even remotely interested in sports betting, you don’t want to miss this one. Fuhrman shared his insight on how odds are developed for Super Bowl entertainment prop bets and much more.
Dr. Jen Welter, first female coach in the NFL
Welter is a trailblazer, and her enthusiasm for leveling the playing field for young women is contagious. She talks with us about her time as the Cardinals’ LBs coach, the 49ers’ Katie Sowers, and her Kick (Gl)ass foundation, which exposes girls to football and STEM opportunities.
Jay Glazer, Fox Sports NFL insider
Glazer shed some light on new Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s character. You’re not going to want to miss his insight on Jimmy Johnson’s Hall of Fame announcement, or his story on breaking the news to Michael Strahan that he wasn’t going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
Chad Millman, chief content officer for The Action Network
If you’re interested in sports betting and you don’t have The Action Network app on your phone, Ochoa and Millman will convince you to change that in this podcast. Chad also looked back at his Project 256, where he bet on every single NFL game in 2019 and won 56 percent of those bets.
Akshay Khanna, GM of sports at StubHub
Khanna was kind enough to join us to talk about all things Super Bowl tickets and the data behind it. It’s a fascinating and fun listen.
D. Orlando Ledbetter, Falcons beat writer for the AJC
Ledbetter joined Thomas on Radio Row to talk about the outlook for the Falcons in 2020, Austin Hooper’s future, and more.

Joe Theismann, former Washington QB and Super Bowl champion
If Theismann had to pick between playing for the Niners or the Chiefs right now, he’d still choose Washington. Tune into this one for some excellent insight from a legendary player.
Christian McCaffrey, Panthers RB
Is a hot dog a sandwich? The third player in NFL history to hit 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in a single season says absolutely not.
Darren Rovell, sports business analyst for The Action Network
Rovell talked about the changes in Super Bowl host city parties over the years, why Saints fans ribbing Falcons fans about 28-3 makes no sense, and more. This is, as Rovell would say, tremendous content.

Does your team need a defensive back in the 2020 draft? Then get to know Tanner, who talked about his draft preparation process and his favorite show to binge watch on Netflix.
Will Cain, ESPN Radio
Ochoa has the hot take that Aaron Rodgers isn’t good, and much more during this chat with Cain.
Keith Ismael, former SDSU OL and 2020 draft prospect
Ismael loves to cook, he’s a big fan of the movie Ratatouille, and if your team needs an offensive lineman in the 2020 draft, you’ll be rooting for them to grab this guy.
Auden Tate, Cincinnati Bengals WR
Tate’s go-to meal? Turkey wings, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread. He’s a huge fan of The Office, further confirming his good taste. Tate joined Ochoa and Thomas to talk about all of this, as well as the Bengals.

Two days after the San Diego Chargers decided to move to Los Angles Adam and I began talking about how we could help get more season ticket holders for our beloved San Diego State Aztecs. The idea was mulled over in our Facebook ADMIN group and we came to the decision to throw a season ticket party. Adam had worked with the Aztec Club in the past to throw small events in his community to attempt to up the Aztec FB season ticket count. We all joined together with Adam taking the lead with the Aztec Club. San Diego Sports Domination was along for the ride to help use our broad reach to attract members of the public and our followers to attend the event. We had 13 people RSVP for the event and only eight of the 13 attended. With some last-minute things coming up for those who could not attend. We had 20 people interested many of which did not attend.
We had a group of about 15 people attend this event at the KnB Wine Cellars near San Diego State. The venue was amazing and that you will be able to see thanks to our photographer Amanda SanMartin for the amazing photos. Collectively we brought in five new season ticket holders and four people renewed season tickets for 2017. When you don’t count the San Diego Sports Domination Staff (David, John, Amanda… All of which have season tickets and Amanda has credentials) Adam and the three members of the Aztec Club in attendance. The night overall was a success.
If you are looking into throwing a party in your community to help Aztec FB get season tickets please reach out to us and we will let you know how to do so.

Eat ’Em Up, Kats! Sam Houston Wins First Football Championship
News and important information on Point of Sale & POS Hardware.
WHO: Sam Houston State University football
WHAT: The Bearkats beat South Dakota State in Frisco Sunday, giving Texas its first NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) winner since the tournament began in 1978.
WHY IT’S SO GREAT: Remember what it’s like to watch a Texas college football team win a national championship? It’s fun. It’s agonizing. And it sometimes seems about as rare as being struck by lightning.
On Sunday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, lightning struck North Texas in the second quarter, delaying the FCS championship game between South Dakota State and Sam Houston for more than an hour. And then it struck again, when the Bearkats turned a 17–7 lead into a 21–17 deficit with five minutes and 41 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter . . . only to prevail, 23–21, with 16 seconds left.
The Bearkats join Division III Mary Hardin-Baylor (2016, 2018) and Division II Texas A&M–Commerce (2017) as recent Texas NCAA football national champions; the last school in the state win such a title at the Division I level, of course, was Mack Brown and Vince Young’s University of Texas Longhorns, in 2005.
Huntsville native and SHSU alum Richard Linklater is sort of the Matthew McConaughey to Sam Houston’s University of Texas, but he’s more of a baseball guy (and also not on Twitter). Instead, another distinguished graduate chimed in:
Congratulations to the #Bearkats on a national championship!!!! (Too many exclamation points? Don’t really care.)The South Dakota State squad played with grit and determination – one of the best games I’ve seen in a while.
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) May 17, 2021
Also offering congratulations was some combination of Governor Greg Abbott, his social media team, and an erroneous autocorrect.
In some ways, this was old hat for Sam Houston head coach K. C. Keeler, who won championships as a player at the University of Delaware and playoff berths as a Division III head coach at Rowan University before returning to his alma mater and leading them to the 2003 FCS title. Sunday’s game made Keeler the only coach to win an FCS championship at two different schools; he also passed Jim Tressel (of Youngstown State and, later, Ohio State) to become the winningest postseason coach in FCS history.
But for Sam Houston, the glory was new, and also overdue: under Keeler’s predecessor, Willie Fritz, the Bearkats lost to North Dakota State in the 2011 and 2012 championship games, while Keeler’s teams got bounced in the semifinals three times between 2014 and 2017. In the locker room after the game, the Pennsylvania native evoked the spirit of Philadelphia Flyers coach Fred Shero’s famous quote: “Win today and we walk together forever.”
(Shirtless college football players in cowboy hats. Talk about the best thing in Texas!)
“This is immortality,” Keeler said. “For the rest of Sam Houston’s life they’re going to celebrate this national championship. For the rest of existence.”
It almost didn’t happen. Sam Houston joined most of FCS (but not fellow Southland Conference teams Houston Baptist, Abilene Christian, and Stephen F. Austin) in choosing to play spring football for a shot at Frisco. The Bearkats played through all the usual COVID-19 limitations and then some, including not having a locker room (the athletics facilities were undergoing an “off-season” renovation), plus the Texas winter storm in February.
With a 6–0 record in the regular season and a number two seed in the postseason tournament, the Bearkats got to play every game at home until the championship, but with the bracket reduced from its usual 24 teams to 16 (eliminating a bye week for the top seeds, and generally reducing the potential for chaos/upsets), Sam Houston’s draw was anything but easy. To make the final game, they had to beat undefeated Big South champion Monmouth, eight-time national champion North Dakota State, and the only team besides North Dakota State to win the FCS championship since 2011, James Madison. The Kats needed a game-ending defensive play to dispatch Monmouth, trailed NDSU in the fourth quarter, and were down 24–3 at halftime against James Madison. Then they got to Frisco, where some players, unable to walk the graduation stage in Huntsville with the other students, participated in graduation rites held at the ballroom of an Omni hotel in Frisco.
And then came the rain and lightning. If you think college football in May is weird, how ’bout college football without halftime? Due to the second-quarter delay, the mid-game break was just three minutes. But for Sam Houston, such weirdness was just more of the usual.
“It wasn’t a shocker for us because we’ve dealt with stuff like that all year,” said Bearkats quarterback Eric Schmid. “We were kind of joking in the locker room, like, it’s got to be this way for us to win.”
It was a slippery game in more ways than one. Sam Houston’s defense knocked SDSU’s starting quarterback, Mark Gronowski, out of the game early. Schmid took one hit that had him spitting up blood, and another that saw the trainers re-taping his ankle. He hit the ground repeatedly and hard, as both a dangerous runner and before and after pass attempts. Had this not been the last game of the season, he might have missed the next one. Keeler said that offensive coordinator Ryan Carty told the QB, “‘I’m riding you in the national championship. You have three months to recover.’
“And Eric goes, ‘I know. Ride me.’
“You talk about a warrior and you talk about a guy who is just so calm under pressure and just doesn’t panic,” Keeler continued. “I think that’s why a lot of us felt that we were going to be fine on that last drive.”
Indeed, while SHSU’s defense allowed a hundred-yard rusher for the first time in 21 games—South Dakota’s Isaiah Davis rushed for 178, including an 85-yard touchdown—and the team did most of its offensive damage in the second quarter, you could sense that they expected to prevail in the game’s final minutes, as they had all postseason. Dominant three-hundred-pound defensive end Joseph Wallace, a Texas Tech transfer out of Dallas’s Skyline High School, said the team never questioned whether Schmid would get the Bearkats back into the end zone.
“That last play, I was looking at my D-line coach, Coach Siddiq [Haynes], and he looked at me in my face—he said, ‘Watch this, we’re going to win.’
“And I told him, ‘I already know, Coach.’ Nobody ever doubted on the sideline. We all knew what was about to happen, honestly.”
Schmid hit wide receiver Ife Adeyi on third and goal from the ten-yard line for the winning touchdown, but another Bearkats wideout, Jequez Ezzard, was the game’s MVP. The Howard transfer made plays like this all year:
Soft-spoken on camera during the trophy presentation (and left out entirely from the postgame press conference), Ezzard still got himself an exultant hot-mic moment on the ABC TV broadcast.
If the Bearkats were formerly the Oklahoma or Notre Dame of FCS—often in contention, but with no title to show for it—now they’ll look to be Clemson to North Dakota State’s Alabama, battling to be in the final game each year, and maybe starting their own dynasty. And oh yeah: one nice thing about spring football is that Sam Houston’s fall season starts only 107 days from now.

SD I: my first week at SDSU
i said i’d blog more. i really want to blog more. but you see, writing can be really hard and although it would totally make sense to just write down what i’ve experienced so far, i always end up with the urge to write something good, something that’s more than just the usual recap of my week, something deep that might have the potential to leave an impact on you, my readers. so i’ve come up with an idea: two parts! so what follows is the casual part, the one that you can read on your commute or if you’ve got a few minutes to spare, and if that leaves you hungry for more, you can check out my next blog post (which i’ll hopefully manage to put up as soon as i can manage to write more than one line). let’s give this a try, shall we? i’ve been living in san diego for a bit more than a week now and let me tell you, those days have just rushed by because i’ve experienced so much and because i’ve been so busy getting used to my new home. the day i moved in was incredibly hectic, beginning with my flight from san francisco to san diego in the morning (you can check out that blogpost right here) and ending with me falling asleep in my new room, cuddled up in a blanket i’ve bought only three hours before at ikea. it was raining that day and after making my way across campus with my huge suitcase but without an umbrella, i was completely drenched when i had finally made it to my apartment. that’s where i met katie, a lovely girl with whom i’ll be sharing a room for the next four months. after that it was time for my first uber ride so i could stop at ikea for a quick visit to get essentials such as a blanket, a cussion as well as towels and kitchen utensils and just all the stuff that i was able to remember although, due to lack of time, i hadn’t eaten anything that day and felt a bit delirious to say the least. what followed was a quick stop at the grocery store with my other amazing roomie, kirra, so i could go to bed that night with at least some kind of food in my belly. oh my, this really felt like the longest day of my life! but you know what? i made it. i managed to get all the stuff done that i was supposed to do that day, i moved into my new apartment and woke up the next day feeling kina proud of myself. also, very, very jetlagged, but mostly proud.
since then i’ve spent my days exploring my new home and meeting new people (i’ve lost count of how many times i’ve said the phrase “hi, i’m lea! i’m from switzerland” in the last week). on saturday i went on a san diego city tour which was really great, on sunday i visited the awesome place that is the gym on campus for the first time and on wednesday i went to my first lecture at sdsu. however, if i had to pick a highlight of my time here so far, it had to be the basketball game we went to on saturday evening, it was truly such an incredible experience that i’ll probably never forget! the stadium is right on campus, it’s just huge and tons of people, all wearing sdsu gear of course, came to cheer and have a good time - it’s just like the movies, just so much better! school spirit is really, really big here, so of course i had to go ahead and buy my own sdsu hoodie and shirts before the game. guys, if you ever come to the states, go check out a basketball or football game, you definitely won’t regret it! there are so many moments, big and small, that have made this first week here so very special. on monday i walked home from the gym around 5pm, i was wearing my training shorts and a light jacket, the new ep by the xx was playing on repeat on my iphone that day and when the warm sunshine hit me, i realised that this place already started to feel quite a bit like home to me. don’t get me wrong, there are still moments when i feel very insecure and as if i don’t belong here, but now that i know my way around campus and i’ve met some awesome people, i feel like the next few months are gonna be some really good ones. cheers to new adventures and sunny cali days!

SB Nation on Radio Row at Super Bowl LIV
Enjoy all of our conversations with players and other personalities in one place.
SB Nation’s team brands were well represented in Miami during the week leading up to Super Bowl LIV. We’ve got a ton of
Pete Sweeney from Arrowhead Pride and Kyle Posey from Niners Nation are on the team beats, bringing you the latest and greatest on the Chiefs and 49ers right up through the game on Sunday. RJ Ochoa from Blogging the Boys spent the week on Radio Row with NFL Associate Director Jeanna Thomas and Podcasts Executive Producer John Gennaro having fascinating conversations with NFL stars, draft prospects, and other personalities.
Turley insists that cannabis saved his life, and he’s using his platform to help others learn about the health benefits.
Todd Fuhrman, FOX Bet analyst
If you’re even remotely interested in sports betting, you don’t want to miss this one. Fuhrman shared his insight on how odds are developed for Super Bowl entertainment prop bets and much more.
Dr. Jen Welter, first female coach in the NFL
Jen Welter is a trailblazer, and her enthusiasm for leveling the playing field for young women is contagious. She talks with us about her time as the Cardinals’ LBs coach, the 49ers’ Katie Sowers, and her Kick (Gl)ass foundation, which exposes girls to football and STEM opportunities.
Jay Glazer, FOX Sports NFL insider
Jay Glazer shed some light on new Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s character. You’re not going to want to miss his insight on Jimmy Johnson’s Hall of Fame announcement, or his story on breaking the news to Michael Strahan that he wasn’t going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
Chad Millman, Chief Content Officer for The Action Network
If you’re interested in sports betting and you don’t have The Action Network app on your phone, RJ and Chad will convince you to change that in this podcast. Chad also looked back at his Project 256, where he bet on every single NFL game in 2019 and won 56% of those bets.
Akshay Khanna, GM of Sports at StubHub
Akshay Khanna was kind enough to join us to talk about all things Super Bowl tickets and the data behind it. It’s a fascinating and fun listen.
D. Orlando Ledbetter, Falcons beat writer for the AJC
D. Led joined Jeanna Thomas on Radio Row to talk about the outlook for the Falcons in 2020, Austin Hooper’s future, and more.
Radio row with @jeannathomas today! https://t.co/v4xn6kWVpA pic.twitter.com/1ntSS5dCTe
— D. Orlando Ledbetter (@DOrlandoAJC) January 29, 2020
Joe Theismann, former Washington QB and Super Bowl champion
If Joe Theismann had to pick between playing for the Niners or the Chiefs right now, he’d still choose Washington.
Alexa Score, Vikings sideline reporter
Come for the unparalleled insight into the Vikings, and stay for the fun. Alexa Score is a former professional wakeboarder who helps Jeanna educate RJ about pontoon boats.
Cynthia Frelund, NFL data science for NFL Network
In one of our most fascinating conversations of the week, Frelund shares how she analyzes the offensive line and safety positions and much more.
Daniel Wallach, gaming law and sports betting attorney
We revisit Deflategate, the Ezekiel Elliott suspension, and discuss the current issue with the Saints’ connection to a lawsuit about child sexual abuse against the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
Oliver Luck, XFL Commissioner
If you’re dreading the end of football season, this interview with XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck (yes, he’s Andrew’s dad) will get you fired up for the league to kick off its new season the weekend after the Super Bowl.
Jake Fromm, former UGA QB and 2020 draft prospect
RJ and Jeanna chat with Fromm, aka Jake from State Farm, about preparing for the draft and what he’s watching on Netflix, which is definitely Grey’s Anatomy.
Terry McLaurin, Washington WR
McLaurin talked about playing in the pros with Ohio State teammate Dwayne Haskins, his outlook on Washington’s future under Ron Rivera’s leadership, and details about just how important The Game against That Team Up North is for the Buckeyes.
Jay Ajayi, free agent NFL RB
Ajayi talked with us about his experience as a pro FIFA player, winning a Super Bowl with the Eagles, and whether his Super Bowl ring is bigger than Jeanna’s engagement ring.
Bob Sturm, The Athletic Dallas
Bob and RJ chat about all things Cowboys, including fans’ perspectives on Dez Bryant and the outlook for the team under Mike McCarthy’s leadership.
Emmitt Smith, Hall of Fame RB
It’s not every day we get a Hall of Famer to join us to talk about Jimmy Johnson’s induction into the Hall, the outlook on the Cowboys, and more.
Jason Robbins, DraftKings CEO
Every DFS player needs to hear this. Robbins talks about the different formats available on DraftKings and the strategies behind them, as well as the community DFS can build.
Beau Tanner, former BYU DB and 2020 draft prospect
Does your team need a defensive back in the 2020 draft? Then get to know Beau Tanner, who talked about his draft preparation process and his favorite show to binge watch on Netflix.
Will Cain, ESPN Radio
RJ has the hot take that Aaron Rodgers isn’t good, and much more during this chat with Will Cain.
Keith Ismael, former SDSU OL and 2020 draft prospect
Keith Ismael loves to cook, he’s a big fan of the movie ‘Ratatouille’, and if your team needs an offensive lineman in the 2020 draft, you’ll be rooting for them to grab this guy.
Auden Tate, Cincinnati Bengals WR
Auden Tate’s go-to meal? Turkey wings, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread. He’s a huge fan of ‘The Office’, further confirming his good taste. Tate joined RJ and Jeanna to talk about all of this, as well as the Bengals.
Harrison Hand, former Temple CB and 2020 draft prospect
Matt Rhule was one of the hottest head coaching prospects this offseason, and he got snatched up by the Carolina Panthers early in the process. Hand, who transferred to Temple from Baylor, shares his unique perspective on Rhule as well as some insight into what to expect from him in the NFL.
Patrick Taylor, Jr., former Memphis RB and 2020 draft prospect
What’s the best BBQ in Memphis? Taylor’s got the answer in this podcast. He talks about his experience as a WR in high school and how his route running skills will help him in the NFL, and much more.
Xavier Woods, Dallas Cowboys S
Xavier Woods joined RJ to talk about all things Cowboys, including his offseason, his goals for 2020, and reality TV.
Commander Dan Kitts, lead pilot for Super Bowl flyover
We didn’t expect to land this interview, and it ended up being one of our favorites of the week. Commander Dan Kitts will be the lead pilot for the Super Bowl flyover, and he talked about the planning and precision involved in this fascinating podcast.
Will Brinson, CBS Sports senior NFL writer
Which team will win the NFC East next year? What about the NFC South? What podcasts does Will’s wife listen to? Will answers all of these burning questions in our chat with him on Radio Row.
Mina Kimes, ESPN senior writer
Mina joined us to chat about the Seahawks, obviously, and how the quarterback carousel may shake out. She shared her excellent opinions on Matt Ryan, and much more. This was one of our favorite conversations of the entire week, and you won’t want to miss it.
We’ve also got daily recaps from our beat reporters, Pete and Kyle.

Jackie Ready For First Day of Fall
Jackie here - Yes, I’m a day early for the autumn equinox but I wanted to be ready when it gets here tomorrow. Fall is full of fun stuff to watch being done - leaves filling with gutters, students dropping beer cans in the yard as they stumble past, the SDSU Jackrabbits pouncing on their football opponents on Saturday afternoons and evenings. These boys really know how to score (don’t I know!!!!) with an average of 38.66 points per game in the last 3 victories and a 35 point average for the season. I know you readers are saying “OMG!! Jackie has an interest in college football. What’s up with that?”
Even with a new interest, I’m still primarily occupied with planning the SDSU Semi-Classic Film Series which is set to go public any day now. I saw a need to expose students to films not based on fantasy and superheros so I’m sharing my DVD collection with the world. The daily theme will be a particular actor/director/composer/cinematographer/producer’s body of work. The month of January 2020 will be devoted to Golden Globe winning films and the month of March 2020 to Academy Award Best Picture films. Last week I personally screened the films of Hugh Grant and Colin Firth in a two day marathon. They were born only a day apart on September 9 and 10th, 1960. Both have flourished in careers beginning in the 80′s and are still working. Leading men near 60 years old are just a pleasure to watch! Of course I would be remiss to not mention Hugh Grant’s little judgment hiccup which resulted in a Los Angeles arrest in 1995. I’ll leave the particulars out because I try to write a family friendly blog plus I know you all can google it and get the down and dirty details. I think it’s appropriate to quote Woody Allen in this case - “the heart wants what the heart wants”!

June 28th 2012 on the campus of San Diego State University … I sat down with my team in a meeting room and an hour later San Diego Sports Domination was born. Today marks seven years. San Diego Sports Domination (SDSD for short) is an award-winning sports blog based in San Diego, California. We created this blog to share our love of sports with the San Diego Community and to help cover teams that the San Diego Media might not have the bandwidth to cover.
Since our creation we have been read in over 180 countries around the world. We have received over 450,000 views. We have also won two blogging awards (eCollege Finders Top Collegiate Blog Award and Our City San Diego’s Top 10 Blog Award). We have had articles linked to newspapers and blogs all over the United States. We have worked with many major brands across the country to cover events in San Diego. We have worked with Bellator MMA, Dove Just For Men, Petco, America’s Best Racing, Delaware North Sportservice, Staples and AT&T just to name a few.
We are the largest all-inclusive sports blog in San Diego. We have been guests on many radio shows including Xtra Sports 1360, Mighty 1090 “Scott & BR Show”, ESPN 1700 “Rod Luck”, Talk Now San Antonio (ESPN), SB Nation Podcasts and many more. We have been invited onto a few local TV stations to talk about San Diego Sports. Those stations being NBC 7 San Diego, CBS 8 San Diego and KUSI Sports. We also have spoken with Fox 5 San Diego just incase they need a sports expert to comment. We almost did a March Madness segment with them last year.
NBC 7’s Todd Strain, SDSD CEO David Frerker and SDSD Senior Writer John Kegley.
Back in 2016 we teamed up with Oakwood Escrow SD and Ignite Now Media to create a new sports segment on The American Dream TV Show. The goal of the show was to provide sports stories to fans of the American Dream and SDSD. I was one of the main driving forces behind getting guests to appear on The American Dream Sports Stories. All in all we had guests ranging from super fans, NFL players, Olympic Gold Medalists and more. Below is one of the segments of the show that I hosted.

We have made leaps and strides to make San Diego Sports Domination your go to destination for San Diego Sports News. For the first six years of our site we have provided game day coverage on Social Media and through post game articles. In December of 2018, we asked all of our fans one question. Instead of posting one high quality cover photo would you guys like full photo albums from events? The response was heavily in favor of posting a ton of photos. That new strategy was implemented on January 1st 2019. Since then we have had over 200,000 views on the blog this year. Site traffic this year has grown exponentially. We have had 6x as many hits in 6 months as we did in all of 2018.

San Diego Sports Domination has been a project from the very beginning. We have relied on our staff of dedicated writers and photographers. Our staff does this because they love sports. We have had many writers along for the ride with us… but two of them stand out. Olivia Sandusky and Scott Koppenhaver. SDSD has helped both of them enter into their current fields. Scott wrote for us back in 2014 covering San Diego State Baseball on the blog and on all of our social media platforms. Scott did an amazing job. I was honored to give Scott a glowing recommendation during his interview process with the NFL. Scott is now working as a social media content producer at the National Football League. Olivia wrote for us back in 2016 covering Albion SC Pros now ASC San Diego. We connected and I learned about how Olivia wanted to get in front of the camera. I was able to work with Albion to place Olivia as the pre/post game interviewer. Olivia went on to bigger and better things. Olivia is now rocking her career as an on air TV journalist.
So far in 2019 San Diego Sports Domination has provided coverage of 83 events with three more on Saturday. Then taking a break for the month of July. This fall we will be adding some high school football photography into our line up of sports coverage. We could not have done it without the photos of Tony Amat, Edwin Dickerson, Von Ware, Chris Atkans and John Mathew Harrison. Our professional photographer’s photos have brought San Diego Sports Domination to a whole new level! Also thank you to all of our loyal readers and followers. We would not be here if we didn’t have you all! We do not publish every sports update that comes across the lines in an attempt to not alienate our followers. The best way to keep up with us is on Facebook or Twitter. We look forward to continuing to bring you up to the minute news coverage of every San Diego Sports team for years to come!

NFL draft: Diminutive Donnel Pumphrey tries to buck odds with toughness, versatility
yahoo
MOBILE, Ala. — The smallest player at the 2017 Senior Bowl carries one of the biggest college football résumés into town with him.
And though his frame is small, San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey has enough width and strength in his shoulders to carry it, just as he did his Aztec teammates during a brilliant career. The 5-foot-8, 169-pound Pumphrey is the all-time leading rusher in NCAA history, surpassing Ron Dayne’s record set in 1999 (although his bowl game totals were not included), and has been a beacon of light for a once-dormant SDSU program.
“When we came in as freshmen, our class, we wanted to set a legacy,” Pumphrey told Shutdown Corner, “and that’s what we did.”
With each year, the quick, strong and fierce rusher rose the charts and put up historic rushing numbers, averaging 1,884.3 yards the past three seasons and topping the 2,000 mark this past season. He also scored 62 rushing TDs in his career and finished 10th in the Heisman Trophy voting this season. Despite a big campaign by the school, Pumphrey finished behind three other running backs and a defensive lineman.
San Diego State RB Donnel Pumphrey says he won’t let his small stature stop him from being a successful NFL player. (Eric Edholm/Yahoo Sports)
Pumphrey said the only enjoyment he got out of the Heisman buzz was seeing his teammates and the school get recognized.
[Newsletter: Get 5 great stories from the Yahoo Sports blogs in your inbox every morning!]
“He’s 100 percent right about that,” San Diego State offensive guard Nico Siragusa said. “We’d be like, ‘Bro, you’re getting all this attention!’ And he’d be like, ‘No, we all are.’ He really wanted us to enjoy it more than he did, and we absolutely loved the attention. He couldn’t have cared less about himself.”
“I just wanted to be sure my teammates got the credit they deserved for our success,” Pumphrey said, and he can point to a pair of 11-3 seasons the past two years and blowout bowl game wins over Cincinnati and Houston as proof that he and the Aztecs reached some terrific heights.
As for the NFL, however, there are questions. Pumphrey’s weight, frankly, is a problem. A college career that saw him touch the ball 1,168 times includes a lot of damage on such a small frame, although Pumphrey didn’t miss a single game in his career. He said he could count on one hand the number of practices he ever missed, too.
But for track-minded NFL evaluators, there are just not a lot of comps out there, body-wise, to point to for players who had extended success. Forget Darren Sproles, who carries 20-plus pounds over what Pumphrey does. The only two who compare over the past two decades are Warrick Dunn (180 pounds) and Dexter McCluster (175).

“When it’s time to get down, I get down. I try to make guys miss as much as possible,” Pumphrey said. “I do what I have to do when they call my number.”
Add to the equation the fact that Pumphrey was not asked to do things he might have to in the NFL, such as return punts (zero returns in college) and catch passes (he had only 99 receptions over four seasons). He returned a mere five kickoffs in college, too. Pumprey said he’s trying to add as many skills to his repertoire as he can with the NFL looking on. He caught several punts in practice on Tuesday and is working on his pass-catching and pass-blocking skills before the draft.
“Those are things teams might want me to do, so I am spending as much time between now and then to try to harness them,” Pumphrey said. “Just because I wasn’t asked to do those things a lot in college doesn’t mean I can’t do them.”
Asked if the 40-yard dash might mean more for a player such as him with some physical limitations, Pumphrey smiled and paused a moment before answering.
“Yeah, it’s important, I guess … but you never really run 40 yards in a straight line in football. Maybe on a kickoff coverage or something,” he said. “I will try to run as fast as I can. But more importantly, I am trying to showcase my ability as a football player. The rest of that testing stuff is what it is.”
Pumphrey doesn’t have an idea where he’ll be picked in the NFL draft. He has heard as high as Round 2, but he admits some people say he’ll last until Day 3, somewhere between Rounds 4 and 7. But he hopes that one team will fall in love with his toughness — make no mistake, the Aztecs were a power-run team and Pumphrey did a lot of work inside — as well as his ability to improve on the other aspects, such as receiving, returning and blitz pick-up.
“I would never doubt him,” Siragusa said. “I’ve watched him carry us for four years, every game, so why would I? The guy is a horse, man.”
[Ditch the paper and pen – play Squares Pick’em for the Big Game!]
When asked which NFL coach he wanted to play for, Pumphrey didn’t hesitate, answering the question like he was trying to blast through a quickly closing hole in the defense.
“Bill Belichick, no question,” Pumphrey said. “They’re the best run organization in football. I just love the way they run things.”
One of Belichick’s favorite phrases is, “The more you can do, the more you can do.” Pumphrey smiled when he heard that. “There you go … I am trying to do it all, and I hope someone gives me a chance.”
Also told that Belichick is famous for taking players whom other teams have overlooked for what they can’t do, Pumphrey said he hopes teams don’t perceive his question marks as negatives but rather as “opportunities for me to prove that my size isn’t a negative. My weight is just a number, and I am not going to let that prevent me from doing something I know I can do.”

The New Mexico Bowl (officially known since 2011 as the Gildan New Mexico Bowl for sponsorship reasons) is an NCAA-sanctioned post-season college football bowl game that has been played annually since 2006 at Dreamstyle Stadium (known before May 2017 as University Stadium) on the campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since its founding, the bowl has been typically scheduled before Christmas as one of the first of the season. In 2011, clothing manufacturer Gildan became the first title sponsor for the game.
Beginning with the 2014 game, the New Mexico Bowl features a team from the Mountain West Conference and a team from Conference USA, provided both conferences have enough bowl eligible teams. If one or both conferences does not, the bowl selection committee chooses an at-large team from another conference. In August 2013, it was announced that Conference USA had signed an agreement to send a regional team to participate in the game for six seasons beginning in 2014 replacing the Pac-12 Conference. From 2006 to 2010, a team from the Mountain West played a team from the Western Athletic Conference.
ESPN, whose ESPN Regional Television division (also known as ESPN Plus) supervises the bowl activities as one of the 11 bowl games they run, is the television home for the game.[2]The game is the only annually nationally televised sporting event in the state of New Mexico. The 2006 contest was the first bowl game played in New Mexico, seeing the San Jose State Spartans defeat the New Mexico Lobos 20–12. The 2012 game was the highest-scoring and closest New Mexico Bowl of all-time and ended with two Arizona touchdowns in the final 42 seconds of play.
The New Mexico Bowl trophy is a 20-inch piece of Zia Pueblo pottery, painted with Pueblo symbols, the New Mexico Bowl logo, football players, and the logos of the competing teams. The Zia symbol, a Zia Pueblo symbol that is used in the state flag, is incorporated into the bowl game logo. The most valuable player trophies are crafted from traditional leather shields.[3]
The New Mexico Bowl stays active in the offseason among the nation and the local community. The bowl co-sponsors the Presbyterian Ear Institutes' Run To Break The Silence, a 5K, 10K and 20K fun run at Sandia Resort and Casino. They also team with NCAA Football to put on a free clinic for area youth coached by both New Mexico and New Mexico State coaches.[4]

What to know about the FCS championship game
NDSU has already done something no team in FCS history has done before: win six national titles in seven years. The Bison can make even more history by winning this game and making it seven in eight. It’s also the last game for head coach Chris Klieman, who’s coached the team to its last three championships. He’s leaving full-time for Kansas State after this game, having pulled double duty for the last three weeks.
Eastern Washington is as good a candidate as any to be a foil. The Eagles were the last team to win the title, in 2010, before NDSU started its unprecedented run of domination. The program’s much different now than then. Head coach Beau Baldwin’s moved on since, becoming the offensive coordinator at Cal after 2016. But after a dip in their first year under new coach Aaron Best, the Eagles are back to their typical role as a contender.
The Bison (14-0) got here by cruising past Montana State, Colgate, and South Dakota State in the playoffs. (SDSU cannot beat NDSU when it counts.) EWU (also 12-2) got to Frisco by blowing out Nicholls State, beating UC Davis in a quarterfinal thriller, and then destroying Maine.
3 things to know about the FCS championship game
1. North Dakota State should win, but don’t bank on a blowout. The Bison are 17-point favorites. Seventeen! NDSU’s amazing, but the teams have performed at similarly elite levels this year. Both have great offenses, with EWU averaging 7.5 yards per play and NDSU sitting at 7.4, each a top-four figure nationally. NDSU’s primary edge is on defense, where the Bison give up 4.7 yards per play (13th) to EWU’s even 5 (27th), but even there, it’s not like the Bison have been in a different class based just on this year’s numbers. There’s also not been a huge difference in competition caliber between the two teams. EWU’s Big Sky put more teams in the playoffs this year than NDSU’s Missouri Valley did.
2. The programs have played three times, all pretty recently. Two have been great games. In 2010, EWU won in overtime in the playoff quarterfinals, 38-31, en route to its only national championship. In 2016, NDSU won 50-44, also in overtime, but in September. In 2017, NDSU won a blowout, but that was an uncharacteristic down year for the Eagles. All of this is to say that when both teams have been good and they’ve met in the playoffs, they’ve treated fans to excellent games both times.
3. These are arguably the two best programs in FCS this decade. This matchup is relatively similar to the FBS one between Alabama and Clemson, though these two don’t have the postseason history against each other to parallel the Tide and Tigers. Of course, NDSU’s the No. 1 of this era in FCS. But you could easily argue EWU is the No. 2. The Eagles have the third-best winning percentage in the country since 2010, only behind the Bison and Harvard, which plays in the Ivy League and thus doesn’t play in the playoffs. If you like the best programs going head to head in the biggest games, you should like this game.
