If possible, would you be able to summarize why it took Mulder and Scully 7 years to finally get together? I’m looking for like 2-3 paragraphs at most. Thank you!

This is a subject that minds far greater than mine have long debated over, but I shall attempt to take a crack at it.

In the Pilot, Mulder and Scully bonded over mutual madness. She's hooked, though she's not bought in to his theories. She's afraid to believe. She's afraid to let people get too close because she grew up moving/losing people constantly. Deep down, she believes and has faith. He wants to believe; he wants to trust no one. Deep down he wants a happily ever after, but he can't get it-- he thinks-- until he has closure for his sister. His quest is his "life" but it's also his father's noose and his own albatross.

Season 1: feelings are brewing. Season 2: Scully realizes her feelings but packs them away (Mulder's nowhere near ready; she's not going to put herself out there.) Mulder begins to realize feelings, gets distracted by life off this planet... until the cancer arc. They're both falling apart, but she tries to be stronger for his sake (per Rob Bowman.) He chooses integrity; she's cured. She shows up at his motel room with a celebratory platter, he leaves to chase monsters in the woods. He loses faith in his mission, she loses faith in herself. She almost walks away, he needs her; she "makes him honest", he helps her not quit. Season 6 is a long, drawn out wait as Mulder puts the inevitable off and Scully tries to fit in until they get the files back. He loses faith in himself, she almost loses faith in her mission. The mytharc explodes in flames. Scully is lonely, Mulder realizes he could have lost her; baseball, life on this planet. Scully asks, "What are you still looking for? We won"; Mulder replies, "My sister." They are schlepped into separate worlds and realize they're each other's touchstones. The world doesn't end, and Mulder finally focuses on living life on this planet: a kiss on New Year's Eve.

Gotta love in "Bad Blood" that their versions of what happens in the motel room differs. Scully recounts it as him flopping down on the bed next to her (of course encroaching on her space) as if he is very comfortable in her room and on her bed. Then, Mulder's version shows him trying to be more considerate and cleaning up after she leaves (this is my room try not to get mud all over) to not get the room muddy. His version, too, shows him getting very comfortable in her room. This is the only overlapping part of the story:Mulder makes her room his even though he could have easily gone to his room to clean up. AND AND when she rushes back to save Mulder she knows to go back to her room because she assumes he would still be there! What? How often does Mulder hang out in your room when you're not there, Scully?

In IWTB, Scullly doesn't give Mulder some action because of his scruffy beard so what does he do? Shaves for her. His proposition when she couldn't sleep was a little action but was stopped because of the scratchy beard. Now, he can't sleep so if he wants his initial remedy, he needs to shave. Go back to the Bad Blood episode in his version, Scully mentions to not get her room dirty, so he tries to appease her by cleaning up. Hmmm....was his plan to wait on her bed when she returned? All he needed was a rose between his teeth.

Season 5 really does take Mulder and Scully's propensity to hang out in each other's rooms to a new level-- post-cancer, it makes sense that whatever frustrated boundary between them that remained had been dissolved.

A rose between his teeth. XDDDD Don't think it was on either of their minds: both were frustrated with each other. If anything, Scully would have gotten madder because he: A. hadn't showered (just dabbed at his sweat and mud with sink water) B. simply removed his top coat and shirt. C. still had his sweaty tank on. So, a muddy man in stink sweat was perched on her pillow... not very conducive to a romantic mood.

I think the shaving scene in IWTB is also a little less romantic. She says, "Scratchy beard", he rubs it against her to make her laugh, and both were about to drop off to sleep. Scully didn't seem to be in the mood for sex ("Got a little something..."/"A little something?"/"Thank you" was her gentle deflection of his offer, and him understanding her boundaries), too strung out and tired from worrying; and Mulder sensed and respected that, siding with her and helping her lighten up enough to sleep. He only leaped out of bed to shave after she lobbed an over-the-shoulder remark about the case evidence... then he couldn't sleep. Standing in the bathroom, he started preparing to join the investigation, proving how much more invested he'd suddenly become. Scully sees this and follows him in, trying to rationalize his interest down.

Shaving, then, wasn't a romantic prelude so much as a sign that he was sinking ten toes down in his old X-Files mode... and Scully, by proxy, started to become nervous. (IWTB has an internal consistency problem with its characters, but this scene wasn't one of them!)

Those are my thoughts! But I'll bet Scully isn't above using a few intimate tactics to wear down Mulder's mind enough to sleep here or there; and if she needed, he's probably done the same~.
