My Top 10 Favorite Godzilla Designs
I used to say that Millennium Godzilla was my favorite design for the character, but that might not be the case anymore. I still love it, but after thinking about for a good long time, I have found that there are designs that I like better. And I finally narrowed down my top 10 favorites. So here it is. My Top 10 Favorite Godzilla Designs
#10. Earth Goji
Tumblr media
By far the most unique design on this list. With his tree-bark-like skin and leaf-like dorsal plates, I wasn't sure to add this design on my list as I felt Goji looked best when he looked reptilian. However, the more I look at it, the more this design begins to grab me. Something else that works in this Goji's favor is that he is ABSOLUTELY GIGANTIC!!! Seriously! This big guy got up to 318 meters tall! THAT'S 1043 FEET! I never got the chance to see this series, but I can at least say that its design for Godzilla is one of the best.
#9. Shin Goji
Tumblr media
This design for Godzilla is ABSOLUTELY HIDEOUS in the BEST POSSIBLE WAY! It looks like the charred remains of a creature that got caught in an explosion that is somehow still alive. The crazy jagged teeth, the tiny, beady eyes, the purple atomic power, even the splitting jaw is great, in my opinion. The only things going against this design is tail seems a little too long sometimes and the arms are super scrawny. It's a bit distracting, I won't lie. Still, Shin Goji is TERRIFYING, and that alone got him on this list.
#8. Singular Point Goji
Tumblr media
I didn't like this design at first. I felt it was a little too odd looking. However, I eventually saw the pictures of the S.H. Monsterarts figure of Singular Point Goji, and found that it did have a certain charm. My only real gripes are the placement of the fangs and that the way the mouth looks from certain angles seems a bit inorganic, if that makes sense. I have not heard a lot of good things about the series, but at the very least the design for Goji is solid, and definitely good looking enough for this list.
#7. MireGoji
Tumblr media
Godzilla had a few different designs during the Millennium Era. This design is called MireGoji, and it comes from Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs Megaguirus (though it varied slightly in both films.) There's plenty to love about MireGoji. One is the colors. This is one of the few Godzillas that is green instead of gray. Not only that, but the pinkish purple dorsal plates are striking. It's very eye catching. Another great thing is all the jagged elements. The jagged teeth, jagged scales, and jagged plates gives this Godzilla an edgy look. The only real downside is the size. MireGoji is one the smallest Gojis on this list at only 50 meters tall. Sure, you can argue that 50 meters is the original Godzilla's authentic height, but personally, I like Godzilla in the height neighborhood of 100 to 120 meters. Still the MireGoji design has its charms, and a special place in my heart.
#6. KiryuGoji
Tumblr media
KiryuGoji, featured in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla Tokyo SOS, is a lot like MireGoji, but with a few differences. The jagged elements are a bit more streamlined, he's back to being dark gray with silver plates, and he has a wolf-like face. In my opinion, it has pretty much everything going for it. Again, the one thing it's got going against it is the size at only 50 meters. But aside from that, KiryuGoji is fantastic.
#5. IDW Goji
Tumblr media
The only Godzilla design on this list that isn't from a movie or show. Illustrated by the remarkably talented Matt Frank, IDW Goji has everything KiryuGoji has going for it, only this time, he's a whomping 100 meters tall. Something about this streamline design and grayish green color really works. It certainly helps that this Godzilla is one of the more powerful versions of the character. IDW Goji is like the perfect blend of the two Millennium Gojis on this list, and definitely my favorite illustrated version of the character.
#4. Monsterverse Goji
Tumblr media
More specifically, his design in 2019 and 2021. It's big, it's menacing, and it looks like it could be an actual animal. I also love the skin and the addition of visible gills, making this Goji stand out that much more. There are only two major problems I have with this design For one thing, the head's a bit too small. I know Godzilla has never had a particularly large noggin, but it's hard not to point out. The other is that I wish he had more teeth, and that those teeth were bigger and more noticeable. Still, this design works, warts and all. Monsterverse Goji is a force to be reckoned with, and I look forward to seeing more of him in future movies.
#3. Gemstone Goji
Tumblr media
This design is brilliant, in my opinion. It's like a perfect blend of Heisei Goji and Monsterverse Goji. Sometimes the skin looks less like scales and more like lumpy, gray warts. It's not bad, but it is hard to ignore sometimes. Most of the time, however, it's not a problem, and this Goji definitely fits with the narrative Gemstone is creating. If they make more media with this design, I'm game.
#2. Heisei Goji
Tumblr media
You can't go wrong with what is, arguably, the most recognizable design Godzilla has ever had. Some even consider this the definitive design for Godzilla, and I can't say I disagree. Most days, you hear the word "Godzilla," and Hesei Goji comes to mind, especially his look in Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla, AKA "MogeGoji," with his enormous size, expressive eyes, two rows of teeth, and bulging muscles. My only two drawbacks is that sometimes the shoulders are a bit to slim, and sometimes the legs seem a little too massive. It's not a deal breaker, mind you, but it can be distracting from time to time. Still, the Heisei era does have, arguably, the most consistent and recognizable design, and it's definitely makes the top 2.
#1. Final Goji
Tumblr media
I have thought about this for a good, long time, and I think I can safely say that Godzilla's design in Godzilla: Final Wars is my personal favorite. The red eyes, the teeth, the longer ears, the slim yet powerful build, it all works. Is he as powerful-looking as Heisei Goji? Not really. Is he as imposing as Monsterverse Goji? No. But something about this design strikes a near-perfect balance for me. Not only that, but Godzilla's personality in this film is great. Godzilla feels like a battle-hardened rōnin warrior with a chip on his shoulder. And now that I think about it, this Goji might be the most powerful. He goes through the whole movie beating the other kaiju left and right without even breaking a sweat. He's unstoppable. If they made a whole film series with Final Goji and all the other monsters in Final Wars, I would absolutely LOVE it. So yeah, after a lot of thinking, Final Wars Godzilla is my favorite Godzilla.

Super7 has opened pre-orders for "Blazing Godzilla (1200º Clear Orange)" Ultimates figure.
I guess for those who really want to blow $85 on a repaint/remold of the same mediocre figure they already released 4 times.
Tumblr media
But, you know, clear and orange this time.
Really a shame that Super7 has apparently gone the way of S.H. Monsterarts, by just constantly recycling a not-great sculpt for ridiculous prices.
Still, even Super7 usually bothers to include interesting accessories, so I have to give them that.

Happy late Christmas to me, for I have received a package today(which I bought myself, so not really a Christmas gift from anyone else). I got more S.H. Monsterarts figures. This time it's Battra Larva and Mothra Larva.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mothra larva is the only one with accessories, being a stand to lift herself up on and a web shooting effect. And Battra has a slight transparency to his main horn, the area around his eyes(as shown in one of the close ups) and his eyes. And there's a size comparison of the two, Mothra larva is small compared to Battra larva, which is accurate for them in their movie, Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth(1992).
More in reblog, as I have a few more photos that are both more about Battra's figure, and a couple of cool shots.

An unexpected early arrival got delivered today, the S.H. MonsterArts Shin Godzilla The Fourth Frozen Ver. —and it happened to also be my birthday today, so it was an EXTRA nice surprise!
Tumblr media
This now serves as the centerpiece of my primary Godzilla figures, and it naturally evolves from all the earlier forms to the right, while the left shows the evolutions of Hedorah and also includes the Legendary Godzilla from King of the Monsters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The color transitions from the gold & brown, to charcoal & crimson, to black & violet, to silver & grey, to the classic matte black & atomic blue, before reaching Hedorah's mottled oily greys, red, & yellows nails exactly what I was hoping for when viewed from any direction.
I also love the different tail designs of The Fourth Night Combat glowing, The Fourth Form Awakening with the psuedo jaw forming, & The Fourth Frozen splitting off and forming into the half-emerged humanoid Fifth Forms.

And now even when I close the display shelf…
Tumblr media
He's still waiting… frozen… for now….

Shin Japan Heroes Universe -- S.H. Monsterarts Shin Godzilla Night Combat Version and Robot Soul Shin Evangelion re-issue announced
While not something covered usually by this blog, the simultaneous releases of these figures alongside S.H. Figuarts Shin Kamen Rider's release and Shin Ultraman's re-issue made them notable -- to commemorate the Shin Japan Heroes Universe, it has been revealed that Tamashii Nation's releases of Shin Godzilla and Shin Evangelion are to see re-release; with the latter being a re-issue and the former being a new minor redeco of the original release.
S.H. Monsterarts Shin Godzilla 4th Form Night Combat Ver. features no accessories, but showcases all the qualities of the Monsterarts subline in its immense size and level of detail; capturing the beastial nature of the iconic Kaiju's reboot. This release's main deviation from the original is colouring the clear parts in red, in an attempt to recreate the glowing red light effect from night scenes in the movie.
Robot Soul Shin Evangelion is a straight re-issue of the previous release - Spear of Cassius Renewal Colour Edition, specifically - much like Shin Ultraman. The figure comes with a large pair of alternate hands, a stand adapter, a knife, a rifle and its signature Spear of Cassius.
S.H. Monsterarts Shin Godzilla 4th Form Night Combat Ver. releases for 16,500 Yen; while Robot Soul Shin Evangelion re-releases for 7,150 Yen. Both figures are general retail releases due for March 2023, with pre-orders to begin on November 1st.

Kaiju Week in Review (April 2-8, 2023)
youtube
Tsuburaya's Big International Push™ for the Ultra Series has been missing one huge element for a while—English dubs for the new shows. These are supposed to be for kids, right? Well, they're finally correcting that with Ultraman Z. This is the only New Generation show I've actually finished since R/B, so I'm pretty thrilled, and it's extremely well-done to boot. OkraTron 5000, the same Dallas-based studio that handled Shin Ultraman, is behind it (and they got Sean Schemmel, Goku himself, as Ultraman Zero). I'm not sure of the exact pace at which they'll be releasing these, but episode 2 is already out as well.
youtube
Some rare Godzilla video game news that isn't a Battle Line update or a mobile game collaboration: Zen Studios' Pinball FX will be releasing a trio of Godzilla vs. Kong-inspired digital pinball tables. So a console game collaboration... still an upgrade! (And believe it or not, this is the first game either MUTO has appeared in since that Candy Crush clone back in 2014.) The trial starts April 13.
youtube
After only uploading Godzilla Island episodes for a few weeks, Toho's English Godzilla YouTube channel is branching out again with subtitled episodes of Chibi Godzilla Raids Again. It starts... well, April 11, which is why I'm scrambling to get this post out. Since the show is so new (and not a web exclusive), there might be a quick hook on these, so be sure to download them; the TOHO animation channel has already removed the first episode.

After limiting itself to figures of MonsterVerse kaiju who have already been covered by S.H. MonsterArts, Hiya Toys is innovating with a Skullcrawler figure, now in the prototype stage. This is only the third articulated figure of the character, and should easily trounce the Lanard and Playmates versions. Note the elbow spikes: it's either the Skull Devil from Kong: Skull Island or Number 10 from Godzilla vs. Kong.

Yesterday, the Super7 Ultimates SpaceGodzilla figure arrived from Entertainment Earth. And, once again, it's rather a mixed bag.
With only minor issues, I have been really happy with the Power Rangers Ultimates I got from them so far (Dragonzord, King Sphinx, and Tyrannosaurus Zord), but this is my second Godzilla Ultimate figure from them and it's...fine.
I mean, on the plus side it's a pretty good figure of SpaceGodzilla and, unlike the S.H. Monsterarts I had before, its tail does not fall to pieces if I touch it. There's a lot of fun rubber parts to the sculpt and the crystals and plates are all translucent, which makes them look even cooler. The crystals accessories are also fun, and it's almost too easy to swap out the head and hands.
The downside, of course, is that this still feels like very little for the asking price--given it's not any more elaborate than something like their Dragonzord figure, and it's priced at a good $30 more. (Sure, it's not as bad as SHMA's prices lately, but it still isn't great) I also still don't understand their aversion to hinged jaws, but it really sticks out here because the inside of the mouth on the roaring head is so undetailed that I had to shine a light inside of it to even tell if they bothered to paint it.
The tail articulation is also even more limited than the Godzilla was, with the added bonus of a bunch of pointy crystals to jab you whenever you try to handle the tail. And I have not been able to get the knees to bend at all on mine yet.
I am mostly happy with it, mind you, but if I hadn't already pre-ordered the upcoming Minus One Ultimates figure from Super7 directly earlier this year, I am pretty sure I would be done with their Godzilla Ultimates line and stick to the ReAction figures instead.
Well, at least until they pull out something truly surprising like a Showa Gigan, Godzilla 1965, or Orga. I don't think I could resist something like those.
