The Unsolved Murder of Jason MacCullough
June 21, 2023
On August 28, 1999, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, Jason MacCullough and a group of his friends attended a house party on Joseph Young Street. After 1am, Jason, who had just turned 19 years old the month before, left the party by himself.
It was a short walk to his parents home, just over 1km. Jason took a shortcut through Highfield Park, which today is known as a not so nice part of Dartmouth. Jason knew this shortcut well, having used it before and it consisted of walking through a playground that connects Joseph Young to Pinecrest Dr.
At 1:30 am when Jason was walking home he was shot in the back of the head. The shot was obviously loud, and neighbours that lived near the park heard the gunshot as well as footsteps running away. The police were then called.
At 2:30 am, an hour later, Jason’s body was found between 100-104 Pinecrest Dr. He was less than 6 blocks away from his parents home.
Jason’s death was surprising, as he had no history of being involved in any kind of criminal activity, he was not involved in drugs, the hit seemed random. Police stated there was no motive for someone to shoot Jason, even to this day, the crime appears to be a random act of violence. It was like he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia is known for areas of violence, drug activity, shootings and it makes sense that no one involved in any of that would come forward and talk to the police. No one wants to be a “snitch.”
Jason was described as a wonderful person, he would often help neighbours, he would shovel snow for his elderly neighbours. Jason was a Chief Scout for Scouts Canada and volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club.
Jason had graduated from Dartmouth High School in 1998, and had been accepted to both of the universities in the area: Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie. Jason had thought about joining the Navy and he worked at a gas station, being known to have excellent customer service.
The following day, August 29, 1999, Allan and Carolyn, Jason’s parents, pleaded for any information on their son’s seemingly random death. Jason had not been robbed, which would have been the main motive for a random attack.
There was actually a decrease in violent crimes in Canada throughout the 1990′s, but Nova Scotia was the only province that had an increase by the end of the decade (Statistics Canada).
It is believed that people do have information about Jason’s death and there is probably witnesses to it that refuse to come forward. Again, no one wants to be known as a “snitch” and have that reputation for fear of their own life.
Though there is no main suspect, the police did eventually release 5 sketches of men who were seen in the area and considered “persons of interest.” In 2000, 4 of the alleged suspects names were published.
A few hours before Jason’s murder, three of the alleged suspects broke into a home on Pinecrest, close by to where the path would use to walk home. The men demanded money and one pointed a gun. They ended up stealing hundreds of dollars in cash and were arrested. The men lived in the area and all of them plead guilty to the robbery, though none were charged in connection to Jason’s murder.
In April of 2005, police confirmed they had new information and were searching for a woman believed to be at Highfield Park on the night Jason was murdered. Nothing else was released and no one knows if the woman was ever located.
In 2014, one of the investigators, who had since retired, said that they had been very close to laying charges, so it does appear that the police probably have a good indication of who did this, but I wonder if they do not have any concrete proof linking the person or persons to actually be charged.
On August 28, 2019, the 20th anniversary of Jason’s senseless murder, the Halifax Regional Police stated that they are aware of several people in the area at the time of the murder and encourage them to come forward with any information they have. Witnesses will not be charged for coming forward, police just need any information anyone has.
The relationship between Dartmouth residents and police has been very strained, and Jason’s family has actually commented that they believe the case would of been solved by now if it wasn’t for a poor communicative relationship people have with police.
The park was renamed the Jason MacCullough Memorial Park. On October 17, 2018, the annual Walk Against Violence was held, which honours Jason and other victims. Every year, Darmouth High School awards a student the Jason MacCullough Memorial Scholarship.
There is an up to $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Jason MacCullough’s death. Anyone with any information, big or small, should call the Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program at 1-888-710-9090. Any annonymous tips can be reported to Crime Stoppers, toll-free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can also submit a tip online at www.crimstoppers.ns.ca
It will be 24 years this August since the senseless murder of Jason MacCullough. This case hits me hard as it happened just about 25 minutes from where I live. Please report a tip if you or anyone you know remembers anything about this case/day.

Fifteen years ago, I was tagged by @lavellenchanted. I hope these extremely interesting answers are worth the wait!
Rule 1: Always post the rules.
Rule 2: Answer questions that are given to you and then write 11 new ones.
Rule 3: Tag 11 people.
Rule 4: Let them know you tagged them.
Rule 5: Don’t change the rules. (What? Change ‘em if you want)
1. If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be?
Oh, gosh. I need very many skills. Maybe something useful like Fixing Stuff, or Being Able to Read a Map, or a handicraft like knitting or crochet, which I think I would actually enjoy but the learning process/my own laziness is the big barrier. But also maybe a language - I’d like to be able to actually really use any or all of the languages I’ve studies.
2. If you could know the answer to any historical mystery, what would you choose and why? THERE ARE SO MANY! I do have a pretty long-term attachment to Amelia Earhart, so it would be cool to finally settle it, even though I have the feeling that we have already come across the answer.
3. Rec me a song! Empire Builder by Laura Gibson. I was listening to it over and over while cleaning my room last week and it’s so lovely and soothing.
4. What is your favourite candle scent? Vanilla? I don’t have a ton of candle experience.
5. Do you have a favourite piece of clothing? What is it? All my PJs! But also my gray Target cardigan, and my sunflower maxi dress.
6. Do you have any fun/obscure facts you’d like to share? Just read a book about polio and the competition for a vaccine, so I’ll go with this: Jonas Salk never became a member of the National Academy of Sciences, either because the members there did not consider any part of his vaccine to be particularly revelatory, or because they just didn’t like him and sided with their friend Albert Sabin instead (Salk and Sabin had an incredibly intense antipathy toward each other).
7. How do you arranges the books on your shelf? Overall: alphabetically by author. If I have more than one book by a particular author, it’s alphabetical by title within the author, unless there’s a series. Those are arranged in publication order and if necessary using the series name instead of a single book title (e.g. my Melina Marchetta books are organized Jellicoe Road; Looking for Alibrandi; The Lumatere Chronicles [Finnikin of the Rock, Froi of the Exiles, Quintana of Charyn]; The Piper's Son; Saving Francesca [or it would be if my copy ever got returned!]; Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil [my copy of The Place on Dalhousie is taking its sweet time getting over from Australia).
8. Spots or stripes? Stripes, probably. I need to get a polka dot shirt, but only because I have so many stripy ones, I need to mix it up.
9. Is there a toy you remember really wanted as a kid, but never getting? What was it? Ugh, I was so easily persuaded by commercials. Every time we would go to my grandparents’ and watch Cartoon Network, there were a million toys and games and basically 90% of them looked awesome and like something I needed. We did get Mouse Trap, and that was a real disappointment (that game broke every nine second and was basically impossible to play all the way through) but I still wanted so many Barbies and Polly Pocket things that my parents (for good reason) refused me.
10. What are you looking forward to? Tentatively, to seeing Engame....
11. What’s your flavour profile?
Apparently?? But it’s probably because I love mushrooms so I kept picking them. This quiz was kinda hilarious though - are celery sticks a “mouth watering pick me up” these days? Are people being judged for liking capers? Ginger, anchovies, horseradish, and blue cheese are basically the least mouth watering flavors I can think of, and I don’t think watercress or fresh peas are rocking salad elements.
Questions:
Favorite board/card game?
Word you misspell most frequently?
A show you’ve been meaning to watch for a long time but can’t find the time or energy for?
If you were a politician/political candidate, what would be your top issue (or top three issues)?
Favorite type of soup? (Or, if you don’t like soup, explain yourself.)
Do you feel that you have a good work/life balance?
What’s your ideal red carpet look?
Favorite media trope/s?
First movie you remember watching in theaters?
What does your morning routine look like?
Favorite kind of restaurant to order takeout from?

As Marijuana Goes Mainstream, What’s Happening To The Way In Which We Speak About Weed?
You may get a superb shirt made up right here at very low prices though prices additionally depend on quality and complexity. Colored with a tinge of traditions, it's a place the place you may discovered monasteries, craft centre, ethnographic museum, boutiques , etc. If nature calls you more than the outdated civilization, then additionally you may get the excellent view of snow clad mountains right here. There aren't giant-scale theater experiences right here just like the lengthy-running Sleep No More in New York, which spans 5 stories and likewise has a restaurant/membership. When switching programs, there isn't a further value and students remain in the identical class with the same instructor. It's a real eyeful! In case you have never dealt with a metal mesh, Dresden mesh, steel beaded bag, etc., it is a real experience! Within the presence of dampness, the steel will begin to form verdigris (that green stuff) and the acidic transformation will produce an identical vinegary odor. I keep away from contact between bags and any form of plastic.
I've seen several baggage ruined by this. These may have period magazines accessible in microform. Any of those may be a supply for examples. Trade Show emporium can personalize your giveaways, supply flooring that’s forgiving on the ft vs. Customers will only have access to restricted areas of the institution, which is able to embrace a safe frequent vestibule, a reception space the place clients should show acceptable identification, a ready space with data kiosks, the dispensary gross sales flooring and a public restroom. It's good to to be large for providing such things to your clients. Windsor Tea emporium is focused on offering Premium Loose Leaf Tea and Tea accessories at reasonably priced costs. The area which you allocated for your furnishings at your house is an ideal verify point to be thought of earlier than choosing a furnishings be it is a sofa, dining desk, chair or a tea desk. The Disney Parks Transportation and Mad Tea Party collections that appeared on shopDisney are also now accessible at the Magic Kingdom. Special attention to alligator bags which are so collectible now. What Reference Materials Do You Recommend on Vintage and Collectible Handbags?
An excellent normal overview of handbags from the earliest into the 1950's. This one is a should. Plenty of images and some particulars on Lucite and Bakelite handbags like those in the emporium. We are getting plenty of inventory in, but some suppliers are not working and lots of are taking much longer than usual to produce. Numerous photos and just a little text. It's the only text on the subject that's extensively accessible. The Olive Tap also presents present baskets for your pals and household. I started off simply promoting them to associates who owned salons and as they acquired their masks, they put them on Instagram,' Dani added. I put packets of silica gel that steadily are available shoes and different imported clothes inside inclined luggage to absorb dampness in storage. Try to retailer the especially vulnerable bags in fabric sacks, like pillowcases, or these outdated quilted fabric handbags. This avoids condensation, dust and scratching in storage. Don't retailer smelly luggage with those not affected. emporium maintained a temporary "crossroads" store on Van Ness-av whereas quarters had been being erected on the previous Market-st site. King Street Coffee & Tobacco emporium also offers a private 24/7 cigar club and lounge (Churchill Society) for an inexpensive monthly fee.
From 1898 to 1906 an unbroken line of success forged the emporium up among the many leaders of town's retail commerce. All I can recommend is to place your downside bag, open, in a cool space, out of sunlight with air moving around. Nehru Place: Nehru Place can be one of the magnificent crowded market which is located in south of Delhi and near Lotus temple, Nehru place is specimen of India's IT potential. Pictured: One of many bedrooms in the home. With nice locations to visit in Dalhousie, your travel holiday is bound to be some of the enjoyable ones permitting you a detailed acquaintance with nature and experiences that you'd reminiscence. Visit Bag Lady University my on-line handbag reasearch heart! It modifications the colour of the strands and can make discolored spots on the bag. Never buy a bag with this odor, as the process has begun and can seemingly progress.

Here’s a “self-identity wheel” that I made for myself!
What this pie chart exemplifies is some of, what I consider to be, the key elements of my identity.
1. Student/Education: As I have already made quite clear in this blog, I have been a student for a long time now and who I am as a student has really taken up a part of my identity as a whole. However, once I finished at Dalhousie, I noticed that it’s prominence in my life is lessening and that likely has to do with the fact that I’m not living in Halifax, in an apartment or residence anymore. I also think it’s important to note though that I love education and I want to continue learning forever. Once I’m finished my “formal” education, I hope to learn more from life, work, travel, other people, and what I read.
2. Feminist: Like the previous one, my identity as a feminist has been made quite clear already. I think it’s important for me to highlight again that I did not always see myself as a feminist and I didn’t truly know what feminism was until I went to Dalhousie. I believe that my feminist-identity takes a similar role in my life as it would for gender/sex in another person’s life.
3. Family/Heritage: My family has always been important to me, but it was not until I reached my 20′s that I truly started to appreciate those around me and the quality time I spend not only with immediate family, but extended family too. I am a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin and I am so thankful to have such a big family. I’ve also become a lot more curious and interested in my family heritage and history of my family lineage and town (because a lot of my family has been in Bridgetown for a longggg time). This curiosity was really sparked when I was working at the James House Museum here in town and was able to read about many different family histories and work alongside a local genealogist.
4. Skills Development/Employability: This was something that I was a bit conflicted about including as an “identity”. I decided to keep it because it is growing to be so important as I reach a time in my life where I may actually be employed sooner than rather (YAY), rather than applying to a new program. Most of my “skills development” has come from my education and past jobs I’ve had. In this new program I am in, Addictions Community Outreach, I have been able to gain much more practical skills and knowledge than I’ve ever obtained from my time spent at Dalhousie (because all I really did was read and write papers). So how does this fit with “identity”? I think it does because being employable means being hard-working, dedicated, respectful, creative/imaginative, a problem-solver, a good communicator, being positive, realistic, and so on. These are things that I work really hard to achieve and maintain, therefore I see this has being a pretty big part of my identity and that will help me get the job of my dreams in the future.
5. Traveller: Travel is so important to me and I believe that this is an aspect of my life that truly lets me explore and expand my identity and cultural awareness. As I have already wrote, I really hope to be able to travel a lot more in my future as I feel like travel is what truly makes me feel human and puts life into perspective, especially if you go to somewhere “non-Western”.
6. Animal-lover: Let’s get things straight right away - life simply is not worth living if you don’t have animals around you or have access to animals. I’ve had pet’s my entire life and have been around horses and other farm animals, creatures in the woods (frogs, snakes, turtles), fish, birds, rodents, all kinds of animals! There is something special in every species (except arachnids, earrings and ticks - those guys need to go away and never come back). Eventually, my true goal will be to work with service animals, dogs specifically, and those who suffer from PTSD and other mental illnesses.
7. Benevolence: I strive to be a kind and compassionate person in everything I do. I consider this to be an important aspect of who I am and who I wish to continue to be, especially in my future work (hence why this slice of the pie is the largest). This is something that I will be discussing more in my next post, as I go more in depth about my future work and what kind of worker and community member I wish to be.

from @suddenlylisten — Happy New Year, everyone! We're so looking forward to our very first show of 2019 this Saturday, Jan. 5th at the Open Waters Festival. It's going to be an incredible night of improvised music with Sound of the Mountain and Brandon Auger. • Not sure what to expect from Saturday's concert? Here's a little bit about Sound of the Mountain: Since forming in 2015, they have played over 100 concerts together, developing a sound language which merges acoustic and electronic textures through amplification and extended performance techniques. With this language they create long-form improvised soundscapes, evoking a vast range of textures, from silence and spaciousness, to rumbling bass and room saturation. The duo works with closely-mic’d instruments and minimal equalization, avoiding the use of effects pedals and loops, such that their constant physical attention drives the music. The whistles and creaking of metal and reed anticipate the more dense moments of distortion and feedback in pieces that can be appreciated as discreet moments, or longer forms. • And about @brandon.auger: Brandon Auger is a sound artist and improviser based out of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. While primarily working with analogue synths, he began experimenting with electronics and tape in the early 90’s. Having a minimalist approach to instrument design and drawing on the element of chance, Brandon manipulates the relationship between sound and silence. • 8pm, Saturday, January 5, 2019 Sound of the Mountain with Brandon Auger Presented in collaboration with Open Waters Festival Sir James Dunn Theatre, Dalhousie University. Hack Rice 7 - I WON A THING
And a month and a week later and look who’s back! I need to cut down on meetings, I have no time to code at home or blog. It’s an actual struggle. But that’s my problem, so here’s a quick post about my most successful hackathon.
HackRice 7 was September 22-24 and in Houston, Texas (and for those keeping track at home, the weekend after HackMIT). I flew out for Houston at 7am arriving later that afternoon, got lost on Rice’s (GORGEOUS) campus for about an hour, finally found where I was supposed to register, registered, and then wandered around their career fair/swag zone stocking up on tshirts and fidget spinners.
HackRice had five major “tracks”, (1) Data Science, (2) Environment/Transportation, (3) Design, (4) Healthcare, and (5) Hardware. I chose to work on the Healthcare track which was described as: “Healthcare and computer science are becoming more interwoven every year, and at this HackRice we want you to explore what’s happening at the junction between CS and health. More healthcare-related sponsor companies will be at HackRice this year than in any previous year. We’re working with different groups in the Texas Medical Center to make sure hackers can explore the cutting edge of new health technology at HackRice 7.“
Now, as per usual, positives/negatives and all that stuff. Side note: our project was a diabetes management app, I’m a type-one diabetic, easy choice for an app.
Six-Twelve-Six
https://devpost.com/software/six-twelve-six
Like most chronic diseases, Diabetes requires constant attention and care in order to keep the patient happy, healthy, and living a normal life. Technology can help make this easier. Carb counting when you have access to every food - easy. Seeing trends with simple coloured bar charts - easy. Thus, becoming healthier and getting diabetes under control - easy.
Six-Twelve-Six takes the guesswork out of diabetes management. Included is an easy way to view blood sugar trends, a predicted A1C value, and extensive catalog of food with carb values. Six-Twelve-Six helps the modern diabetic explore their world by making insulin management simple and accurate. “Life Is Sweet” with Six-Twelve-Six!
Positives
The best thing about HackRice was of course that we won, my excellent (more on that later) partner Sriram and I actually won a major prize. Specifically, Texas Childrens' Hospital chose our app as the winner for the Healthcare Track - Patient Engagement award. I even got quoted in the Houston Chronicle:
“A computer science senior at Dalhousie University in Canada and her teammate snagged the patient engagement challenge for developing Six-Twelve-Six, a way for young diabetics to easily track and visualize insulin levels and other health data. "Living alone and going to college by myself I had situations where I was having to do a lot of guess work," Six-Twelve-Six developer Rebecca Ansem(s) said.”
As I mentioned above, Sriram and I worked great together, so much so that we had the main functionality of our app good, built, and mostly working by mid-afternoon Saturday. Saturday night and Sunday morning was then able to be spend on “nice-to-haves” instead of (with most hackathons I go to) “must-haves”. I credit this to it being neither Sriram nor my first hack, and we were both using a language and platform we were familiar with (Java, Android, and then Android Studio to tie everything together).
Negatives
Sriram got stuck in traffic and missed the first thirty-ish minutes of presentations. It worked out ok because I rock that presenters booth but yeah, literally the only downside.
Conclusion
I won a major prize at a major hackathon :D :D Also Rice is too pretty. And Houston is my favorite city in Texas but I still don’t like Texas.
How is this a university building
A+ food, egg (spring?) rolls on point
I have never seen more bagels in one place, ever
Winner, winner, chicken dinner :D

20 QUESTIONS FOR: NANCY ANNE MCPHEE
1.Name:
Nancy Anne McPhee
2.Occupation(s):
Artist, Librarian.
3.Where are you from and what is your education?
Grew up in Southern Alberta - Calgary, Banff, Lethbridge. BFA University of Victoria, British Columbia; MFA Concordia University, Quebec; MLIS Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia.
4.Where do you live/work (neighbourhood/city/country)?
Hamilton, Ontario.
5.Does your location affect your practice?
Yes. Hamilton is a good place to be right now. People here are keen, hardworking and active. That has a huge influence on my practice.
6.What is your favourite tool in the studio?
Size 0 liner brush and 300lb hot press watercolour paper.
7.Where do you look for your source material?
Here and there, books, internet. A lot of it is thinking about an image until it solidifies.
8.What is your daily art world read?
Canadian Art, BorderCrossings, CMagazine, although generally I only look at the pictures and scan for friends.
9.What is your daily non-art-world read?
I read 2-3 books a week, so mainly books. Part of my job is to read broadly, so I range from poetry to thriller. My husband has to keep me up to date on current issues - I can’t handle newspapers.
10.What role does writing play in your practice?
Not much, not anymore. There was a short time when my writing and art making were concurrent. I had a wonderful writing teacher in my MFA, Nancy Ring, who encouraged us to use writing as a way of thinking. I made some good work with her that only she and my best friend have read. She died, very sadly, very young. I still think of her often; even when she was dying she was the brightest person in the room. Sometimes a part of you goes away when the person who saw that thing in you is gone. In a practical sense writing is a huge part of my practice because of applications and proposals.
11.What role does research play in your practice?
Research used to play a big part in my practice - I’d do a huge amount of research on a topic, say read every biography of naturalist William Beebe and his books, then the work would sort of copy the information. I’ve come to believe that research has to be a point of departure. I was so wrapped up in illustrating ideas that the work didn’t always stand on it’s own. My practice is now is more instinctual, more about trusting materials.
12.What role does collaboration play in your practice?
Being in a relationship with another artist is an ongoing collaboration of ideas. Sometimes we plan to make actual art together, although it never happens. Mostly it’s a constant back and forth of ideas and of mini-critiques. We almost never agree because we’re completely different kinds of makers, but it’s still a central part of our relationship and practices.
13.How does success affect your practice?
It makes this ridiculous art-sized hole in my life a little less deep.
14.How does failure affect your practice?
Failure is a constant part of art-making. Some bad ideas end up in a gallery, some good ones don’t. Both of those kinds of failure are ongoing.
15.What do you identify as the biggest challenge in your artistic process?
Time and health, and photography. As a working mother with a challenging child, a partner who commutes to a different city, and intermittent family support, time is short. Making art is often interchangeable with sleep. I also have health issues with chronic pain and insomnia. But it’s also the ‘ask a busy person’ thing. Times in my life that have been less full have not necessarily been more productive. Being busy gives you sharp focus. And photography. The nature of art applications is that work that photographs well gets promoted more often. A lot of my work doesn’t photograph well.
16.Who are some historical artists you are thinking about?
Dutch still life painters, anonymous textile and wallpaper designers, scientific and natural history illustrators in general and specifically Ernst Haeckel, glassblowers Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka, Jackson Pollock (the paintings, not the mythology), Egon Schiele’s landscapes.
17.Who are some contemporary artists you are thinking about?
Vija Celmins, Gisele Amantea, Cosima von Bonin, Sally Mann, Mark Dion, Catherine Opie’s landscapes, writer Elena Ferrante, poet Erin Moure.
18.How do you describe what you are making now?
Wallpaper still lifes, monochromatic photographs, drawings of NASA satellites.
19.Who is an artist that you think deserves more attention?
My good friends Clare Samuel and Andrea Kastner are successful artists who should be even more broadly known.
20.How can we find out more about you (relevant links etc)?

CANADA: Adventurous guitarist and oud master Gordon Grdina and the Nomad Trio celebrate new album at La Vitrola in Montreal on Friday, January 10
Adventurous guitarist and oud master Gordon Grdina and the Nomad Trio celebrate new album at La Vitrola in Montreal on Friday, January 10
Teaming Grdina with pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer Jim Black, Nomad, the trio’s debut album is a thrillingly varied recording
“The prevailing ambience is one of dark mystery, but the ruggedness of Grdina’s tone makes for
a palette of rich contrast.” – David R. Adler, JazzTimes (review of Think Like the Waves)
“[Gordon Grdina is] a player of unbridled musical ingenuity.” – Raul da Gama, World Music Report
JUNO Award winning guitarist and oud player Gordon Grdina brings his “unbridled musical ingenuity” to Montreal on Friday, January 10 in a concert celebrating Nomad, the debut recording from his Nomad Trio, with pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer Jim Black. The concert takes place at La Vitrola, 4602 St-Laurent, Montreal. Doors at 8 p.m., music at 9 p.m. Tickets $15. For information visit https://www.facebook.com/events/605177053557542/.
The concert is part of an album release tour that runs through January 17 with additional stops in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Halifax, Ottawa, Hamilton, Toronto, Ann Arbor, Chicago, and New York City (see details below).
A musician’s life is an inherently nomadic one, which can make things difficult when trying to get three of modern jazz’s most in-demand artists into one room at the same time. Vancouver-based Grdina had wanted to bring together pianist Mitchell and drummer Black for several years before their busy schedules allowed them to finally join forces. The results turned out to be well worth the wait, as Nomad, the debut from Gordon Grdina’s Nomad Trio, is thrilling high-wire act of complex interplay and sparks-flying electricity.
The album, out January 10, 2020 via Skirl Records, will be released shortly before Resist, a politically-charged album by the Gordon Grdina Septet on saxophonist Jon Irabagon’s Irabagast label. The Nomad Trio music was penned by Grdina with these musicians and their vast array of experiences in mind – an idea that the composer found incredibly liberating. “Knowing what Matt and Jim can do, the possibilities were wide open,” he says. “I could be as imaginative as I wanted to be, which was really exciting.”
The name of the trio definitely reflects the members’ travel-heavy lifestyles, but in the case of Grdina, Mitchell and Black it also points to the wandering tastes and wide-ranging inspirations of all three musicians. Grdina’s music explores uncommon convergences between adventurous jazz and improvisation, indie rock and classical Arabic music. His diverse projects bridge the divides between contemporary chamber music and avant-garde experimentation, combining unique artists and instrumentations to craft singular sonic landscapes in projects like Square Peg (with Mat Maneri, Christian Lillinger and Shahzad Ismaily), The Marrow (with Mark Helias, Hank Roberts and Hamin Honari) and his Quartet with Oscar Noriega, Russ Lossing, and Satoshi Takeishi.
Mitchell’s boundary-free playing roams between the acoustic and the electronic, the intricately composed and the extemporaneously improvised, meshing with the soulful strains of the Dave Douglas Quintet, the expansive labyrinths of Tim Berne’s Snakeoil, and the metal-jazz fusion of Dan Weiss’ Starebaby alike. Black’s forward-thinking approach to the drums came to prominence in the ground-breaking quartet Human Feel before joining Berne’s influential quintet Bloodcount, and has since forged a unique path splicing jazz with rock, electronica and Balkan influences through bands like AlasNoAxis and Pachora.
In Mitchell’s case, Grdina praises the pianist’s keen focus, saying, “There’s always an intensity to Matt’s playing that I love. He’s somebody that really pushes the music and is one hundred percent committed to it.” As for Black, whose playing has been an influence on both of his triomates, Grdina says, “Jim is able to take these off-kilter rhythms and make them sound cohesive. No matter how adventurous I was in my writing, he made it all groove, so that even the most complicated music feels good, like it all has a backbeat.”
That combination of the joyful and the cerebral is vividly on display out of the gate, as opener “Wildfire” captures the beauty and violence of animals in their natural habitat. Like many of Grdina’s compositions, its title comes from the site of its inception: “Wildfire” was composed while he was an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta, Canada, an institution renowned as much for its natural splendor as for the brilliant music it has spawned. “You’re writing music in a cabin while deer stroll right up to your window, You’re literally in the wild” Grdina recalls. “That beauty is part of it, but the song also has this fire and intensity to it.”
Opening with a knotty solo statement from the bandleader, “Nomad” offers a mission statement for the trio, its gnarled melodic line embodying the restlessness and search for a foothold suggested by the name. Mitchell’s churning solo joins with the tumultuous rumble of Black’s drums to conjure a sense of unsteadiness that bleeds into Grdina’s assertive, serrated turn. “Ride Home,” written while Grdina was wrapping up an exhausting tour with a rock band, feels laden with the edgy weariness and tense anticipation of a long-overdue return,
The haunting “Benbow” recalls a stay in a historic northern California hotel, its age present in both alluring and unsettling ways that reminded Grdina of the ill-fated Overlook Hotel from The Shining – albeit in the much more inviting summer months. The album takes a turn for the autumnal on “Thanksgiving,” written during the holiday but also in gratitude for the opportunity to play with such stellar musicians. Mitchell’s shimmering introduction to “Lady Choral” reflects the music’s origins in a dream – one in which Grdina humorously struggled to pronounce the name of fusion guitarist Larry Coryell. The slip of the tongue produced this stunning, chorale-like piece that is the album’s sole showcase for Grdina’s virtuosic oud playing.
“It feels like all of us are constantly moving, both literally and musically,” Grdina sums up. “Everybody’s always touring like mad, and musically it feels like we have to find our roots wherever we happen to be. It’s a fascinating challenge to stay grounded while doing things you’ve never done before and moving in new directions toward places you’ve never been.”
