Review: The Dragon Dentist
Tumblr media
“ The story takes place in Dragon Country. Nonoko is a newly appointed dentist and her mission is to protect the dragon, the guardian of the country, from tooth-cavity bacteria. One day, amid increasingly fierce battles with the neighboring country, Nonoko finds on the dragon's tooth an unconscious boy soldier from the enemy country. His name is Bell, and he has been resurrected from inside the tooth by the dragon—a supernatural phenomenon that legend says occurs before a major disaster. As Nonoko and Bell go through a series of fierce battles, they eventually learn to accept their fate. “
A short movie-like special that was broken into two parts. At first I was very confused, the terminology and way they decided to translate the subtitles into English took about 20 minutes for me to get used to. After that though this is a beautiful tale full of a ton of allegories and deeper meanings but let’s go over a few problems I had with it first:
Criticism:
Like I mentioned above... Yonkaimushi? Hikarimushi? Yomigaeri? Abukumushi? Yajirimushi? They are types of Aratama? Shikairazu? Kaburimushi? Shisekimushi? Tengumushi? I guess I can break it down with my limited Japanese. They mostly have the root -mushi. Which I know from Mushishi are ghost like creatures which seems about right and then from there they are all sort of adjectives or other words describing them. Like Hikarimushi is a light ghost creature while a Tengumushi is akin to the Tengu spirit in Japanese folklore...? When you first start the series they are literally barraging you with all these names in the first few minutes and it is very confusing. They also give you little to no explanation and you usually only get to see the mushi for a few seconds before they move on.
I want a little more information on their weapons. I gathered toward the end that as dragon dentists (servants) they pull energy from the dragon; being ‘with’ it gives them extra power, strength, and abilities, but their weapons seem to just be ordinary weapons until they aren’t. They grow with a red light around them to take on pretty much any shape. They never mention if they are a piece of the dragon or where they got them. They note that this is taking place in a sort of alternate reality but within ‘modern times’ with 99% of the story taking place in a civil war-esque battle, with a small scene taking place in modern times with a modern airplane. Their weapons are like the one thing that doesn’t have deeper meaning or explanation.
This tounge scene went on just a bit too long...
Tumblr media
It also seems as if they really wanted to allocate their budget to certain scenes, so some of the animation is incredible and other times you just have no backgrounds...
Tumblr media
(let me tell you it definitely wasn’t foggy in the shot literally seconds before this...)
Also the way the Dragon Dentist’s live is a whole lot of nope and that is being said from someone who likes heights.
Tumblr media
Positives:
I could spend ten years breaking down all the allegories here. This series is akin to a book that would be required reading to breakdown in an advanced high school literature class. It never gets too overbearing though. It was always incredible and really swayed how I felt.
This show handled its CG sequences to a much better degree than ZOMBIE LAND SAGA. there still wasn’t much rhyme or reason for when they did do it, but it certainly did not take me out of the suspense.
The fight sequences are incredible and the evolved Mushi remind me of the germs from Cells at Work! but much less bloody. I prefer it that way. Cells at Work! does it for shock and comedy, keeping the blood to a minimum or not at all really means they were trying to focus on the story.
The establishing shots and backgrounds are beyond incredible, at some points they literally took my breath away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also just his big ole’ Uchimizu like tools! What does he even do with them! He never touches the ground!
Tumblr media
There were a few lines that really stuck out to me that I just want to leave here because they leave me feeling positive. This show has left me in a sort of calm quiet state. I def would recommend it.

Verdict:
Tumblr media
that’s it, that’s the premise, remember to brush kids!

Rating: 3/3

Definitely the best dental hygiene based fantasy anime I’ve seen. Nonoko is a newly appointed dentist which entails fighting the monsters that emerge from the teeth of a dragon. One day she finds an enemy boy that’s been resurrected from one of the teeth, an omen of major disaster.
OVA, 2 eps
