As you’re my favorite Irish-speaking blogger, I’d like to ask what you think of Kneecap? Both the group and the film (if you’ve seen it)
Ah go raibh maith agat! — déanaim mo dhícheall <3
I like Kneecap, I’ve been listening to them since CEARTA came out! Some parts of their aesthetic are not for me, but that’s fine, I like the music.
I don’t listen to much of that genre in English. There were a few rap artists around in Limerick when I was a teenager and used to listen to their stuff, particularly Rusangano Family, little of Denise Chaila, I listened to some London grime stuff when I was in the UK, for a sense of place, and recently I really loved the Stormzy + AP Dhillon collab, Punjabi sounds unreal in this style of delivery.
As far as Kneecap go, my friends and I are much more interested in their tracks totally in Irish, so there was a little disappointment at the amount of Béarla in the new album HOWEVER I think Fine Art is a much better album creatively and musically than anything they’ve done prior to this. They were always funny (‘brisim achan riail seachas fuckin caol le caol’ still makes me laugh), but their sense of humour came out more on the new stuff.
Favourite tracks are probably I bhFiacha Linne (“SLÁN!”), and above all Better Way to Live, not just because I adore Grian Chatten but because the whole thing is so Church of Oasis … listened to Drug Dealin’ Pagans yesterday and got a great kick out of it even though I am allergic to Manchán Magan lol
They’ve lovely Irish 7 I like the west Belfast accent very much. And they did teach me the Nordie Gaelic slang for MDMA so I’ll be eternally grateful srl. I assume and hope they’re not doing as much ketamine as they pretend to, or they’ll lose their touch on that wordplay that they’re so good at.
For the film, I haven’t seen it and I don’t know that there’ll be a screening where I’m based, ‘cause I’m not in Ireland. I’d say it’s probably good!
If you’re looking for more Irish-language rap, I recommend Súil Amháin :) he’s more from my side of the country, so maybe that’s part of his draw for me, but he really is class. Murda Meaisín’s my favourite track.
GRMA as an gceist :) tá súil agam go mbeidh tráthnóna deas agat! x

Song of the Day
I totally fell of the map! Ok, here are the updates for the Irish music for this month celebrating Ireland. Rather than sorting to just the stereotypes of St. Patrick’s Day. So, I share music :)
I read about this trio in the article I posted here. This is a Clare/Limerick duo that is creating definite buzz for the hip-hop scene in Ireland.
Enjoy!

Rusangano Family
Limerick’s Rusangano Family are a tightly knit crew. Made up of Zimbabwean MC God Knows, Ennis-born producer mynameisjOhn and MuRli, a poet and MC of Togolese descent, the trio have been broadening perceptions of Irish hip-hop since arriving on the scene a few years ago. Having built their reputation with a handful of self-releases and support slots with acts such as Run The Jewels, Young Fathers and BadBadNotGood, Rusangano Family received mainstream recognition this year by taking home this year’s RTÉ Choice Music Prize for their debut album Let The Dead Bury The Dead.
The group celebrated the award win by releasing a new track in the summer, a soulful exploration of mental health issues called ‘I Know You Know’. “The track is about how we all face various challenges in life,” the band explained, “and our inability to speak about these issues. In one sense, it’s about opening up and engaging in conversation”. Check it out below, and listen to Let The Dead Bury The Dead on Bandcamp.

Rusangano Family - The RTÉ Choice Music Prize – Irish Album of the Year 2016 Winner
Rusangano Family have just been announced as the winner of the RTÉ Choice Music Prize – Irish Album of the Year 2016 for the album 'Let The Dead Bury The Dead' (Self Released). They received a cheque for €10,000 - a prize which has been provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) - as well as a specially-commissioned award.
Jonny Quinn from Snow Patrol presented Rusangano Family with the award. The jury panel of Irish music media professionals deliberated at length tonight and chose the album from the shortlist of 10 records released by Irish artists throughout 2016. The sold-out event in Vicar St, Dublin featured live performances by 9 of the album shortlisted acts. The event was hosted by 2FM's Eoghan McDermott and was broadcast live in a special broadcast on 2FM.

I decided to find released-in-2017 music that ‘fit’ all of the Overwatch characters somehow - either thematically or by country of origin. It’s not perfect, but I think I’ve put together a fun list.

A Night of Sonic Carnage
Three events on a Sunday night in the Déise, 30-4-17
Tumblr media
Sitting in the house sharing a few drinks and chats ahead of a night of music in Waterford City. First up is Rusangano Family (with support) organised by Labyrinth Mgmt and Events in St. Patricks Gateway Centre. After this a short stroll down the Quay and into Jordans American Bar for a swift half to catch the vinyl players spin their finest, then out the door and up the lane to Central Arts for the Sonic Dreams promo night. As we were getting ready to call a taxi we received news that the much anticipated Rusangano gig had been postponed. We discussed the situation over another drink, then headed in for the rest of the night's revelry.
Tumblr media
Jordans was well attended; the front bar full of the grey and the good with a younger crowd out back. In the bottleneck between bar door and smoking area vintage tunes were bapping out through twin tops; the vinyl wearing its age with clicks and pops and crackle with the occasional skip to the dismay of the DJ. Patti Smith's 'Horses' brought people in from the beer garden to dance while Ian Dury held them there as more heads got up to skank and bop. Midnight soon came and a quick few steps brought us out the door and up the steps to the SAW fundrasier.
Tumblr media
Ollie cueing up another one
Tumblr media
Put my pint down in the jacks, eh, which one is mine again?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amy, Dan and John
Friendly faces greeted us upon entry, Dan and John on duty outside with good vibes waiting within. We had missed the previous acts of MANTLE and SOMA, and Dave Mono could be heard pounding through the door with beats that gets in under the skin to make the bones jump and jangle, no standing still allowed. His set was full of well crafted peaks and dips, the music was always going somewhere. Every build-up had a pinnacle followed by a gentler bit to sway to and catch your breath before going through it all over again. Up and down, in and out, building and building like waves onto a shore, our bodies buoyed on the incoming tide of this beautiful and savage mix.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dave Mono weaving his magic. You can listen here: Soundcloud
Tumblr media
Steven Stubbs informed me that my dancing was captured for posterity on his multicam broadcast of the event, which you can see here: Linky
Dave brought us in to land, the lights came up, sweat still glooping from the skin of my back as I sat to put my boots back on. Familiar faces passed by as we filed out into the night to stand and talk on the path a while before heading home.
Two days later and my legs are still in bits from it. I hobble around the house and every time I cringe as I stand up it reminds me of the manic hands in the air dancing on that bank holiday Monday.
Tumblr media
Where's me boots! I swear I grew a tail while I was in there.
Tumblr media
The afterparty awaits.
