Family Matters

Darkhold #9

Starts strong but peters out.

Caprice's funeral, and the aftermath.

The opening is good, and the reveal makes for a compelling hook. But after that, it's all goes a bit average. The focus shifts to different characters in different locations, then returns to the core group so the book can fully commit to the ballsy twist unveiled in the last issue.

Darkhold #10

Improbable fun.

Victoria Montesi and Louise Hastings have been captured by the Darkholders. Can Jinx save them?

The big twist from a couple of issues back turns out to be exactly the sort of misdirection we all thought it was. It gets resolved here. But the status quo is different moving forward. It's all a bit too contrived to fully convince, and undoing the twist feels like a backward step.

If you are writing a series about magic, you have to make sure the logic of the situations is strong. But 14-year-old Jinx coming to the rescue here is a tad silly. Him being under the kidnappers' van? And being able to pull free from the security guards holding him to touch the page? Convoluted and unlikely. Same with Vicki almost being electrocuted late in the story and Buchanan being able to pull the suit off of her in time. I'm pretty sure that's not how electricity works.

It'll be 23 years before we encounter those pesky Darkholders again, since they all got (gruesomely) wiped out here.

Unexpected Things Learned About the Characters & Story

Wow - apparently the last time I did this was 6/18/18, it’s now 7/23/18. Oops. Well, that’s what happens when working on the book to publish, don’t work on other projects!

With that said, have some stuff!

First facts about the animals of the world so far:

Rory 

Loves to have the middle of his shoulders scratched

Doesn’t like having Pyotr near him and intentionally scares/frustrates the human

Likes Helix, that’s his kitten

Rides around on Jon’s shoulders because he mostly can’t get to Luc’s.

Helix 

She loves turkey, give her all the turkey, seriously, where’s her turkey?

Her favorite spot to sleep is Jon’s chair in front of the fireplace

Most the time she’s a soft meower, except when it comes to Rory, then she gets loud. 

Mara 

She loves snow! Her human not so much, so she generally limits her snow time so he is more comfortable.

She knows before her human or his mates when he lady-mate is going to have a litter, she tries telling them, they don’t understand. Silly humans. 

Sometimes she wishes there were other dogs to play with when her human is relaxing, however her human’s mates play with her, so that’s okay. 

She’s got a very nice kennel, she just prefers the pillow at the foot of her human’s bed. 

There was that one time her human had a nightmare, and his mates didn’t respond quick enough, so she did, by crawling in bed and laying on him to lick his face. 

Now some facts about people:

Julian 

Finds himself at a loss for words the first time he meets the entire upper management. he’s never seen so many damned apex predators away from a military complex 

As he adjusts to the Network he decides he’s happy that he ended up where he is. It’s a much better ‘civilian’ career than he hoped for. 

Though seriously calling it ‘civilian’ seems rather foolish as there is at least two mercenary companies within it, to go with a counter intelligence organization and a para-government controlled by the ‘Siblings’

Tichina 

She finds Falco’s search for a replacement amusing, honestly she expected his son, the well behave military one, to be his replacement.

Julian’s an alright sort, the first time she has to discuss an event with him, she has to bite back laughter at his reactions to her accounting and inventory books for it.  He didn’t seem to know how to take her statement, “Welcome to being Aither’s PA, there’s a lot of paperwork involved, more field work then you think, and not nearly enough sleep.” 

She’s open with her kids about how she came to work for Aither, including the fact that she worked as a prostitute.

She’s sex worker positive, but only if the person wishes to be a sex worker, and not because it was the only thing they could find. 

Lettie 

It surprises people that I know ballet because of my size

I am also very good at classical and Latin American dances

While not a sniper, I have excellent aim and often scored high with all types of guns. 

I collect handmade candles
