Japanese Peace Pagoda - Rumassala , Galle⁣ ⁣ A Peace Pagoda is a Buddhist stupa☸; a monument to inspire peace, designed to provide a focus for people of all races and creeds, and to help unite them in their search for world peace. Most (though not all) peace pagodas built since World War II have been built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii (1885–1985), a Buddhist monk from Japan🇯🇵 and founder of the Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist Order. Fujii was greatly inspired by his meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in 1931 and decided to devote his life to promoting non-violence. In 1947, he began constructing Peace Pagodas as shrines to world peace.⁣ ⁣ Japanese peace pagoda in Rumassala Built with the help of Japanese monks, the peace pagoda on Rumasalla Hill is one of four Buddhist peace pagodas in Sri Lanka. Stupas are monuments that serve as beacons of peace for people of all nationalities and creeds, and the clean, rounded design of the Unawatuna pagoda exemplifies this. Visitors can walk🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️ or drive the shaded path to the Peace Pagoda and they will be rewarded with a towering, white bell-like structure surrounded by gold-painted statues. RUMASSALAM, 2017 a meditative sound escape 4 min loop

This piece was one of my contributions for the Eternal Internet Brotherhood/Sisterhood’s gathering on May 5, 2017, at the Tagungshaus Lebengsbogen commune: The Noospheric Society, one part of the public programme of documenta 14.

Situated in the theatre room in which most of the activities took place, this piece is meant for those looking for an escape, something to calm them, to help with moving through this space.

I crafted a soundscape with the sound of waves, birds, bells and a mantra that asks Rama to send his healing energy ‘right here, right here’. To partake, an individual must take a seat, put on the headphones, and then focus on their breath. They may place their right hand in a bowl of ayurvedic flowers and look upon the image I have created of Hanuman, carrying a chunk of forest from Rumassala, flying over the clouds onwards to whomever requires healing. They may also choose to close their eyes.

Japanese Peace (Rumassala Mountain) - Pagoda/Galle, SriLanka

Japanese Peace Pagoda is situated in Rumassala in Unawatuna. It is run by a Japanese priest and is surrounded on either sides by the Jungle Beach and Unawatuna Beach. The stupa is a popular location to view the beauty of sunset and sunrise.

Japanese Peace Pagoda In Rumassala – ගාල්ල රූමස්සල ජපාන සාම චෛත්‍යය Rumassala , known to colonialists as Buona Vista, is the subject of many legends. It is featured in the Ramayana, as the home of the beautiful Queen Sita. According to the Ramayana it is also said that Hanuman dropped a chunk of ‘Himalaya’ at Unawatuna (Onna Vetuna – ‘here it fell’) to form the present mountain, where many medicinal plants still grow. There is a major magnetic anomaly near Unawatuna, which Arthur C. Clarke attributes to a meteorite strike, and it is said that satellites lose their orbits with unusual frequency overhead. The Portuguese had a dreadful reputation in Sri Lanka as looters and pirates, are said to have given false light signals from Rumassala to lure unsuspecting Arab trading ships onto the rocks. Mythical Legend According to legend the Monkey-warrior Hanuman was sent back to India to fetch the four medicinal herbs, mritasanjeevani, vishalyakarani, suvarnakarani and sandhani from Himalaya in mountains to heal Lakshman who was wounded in his great battle with Ravana to save the abducted Princess Sita as he failed to identify the herbs he uprooted the mount and ferried it to the battlefield and a chunk of that “fell-down” forming theRumassala Hillock , and the name of the village derived from Unna-watuna meaning “fell down”. https://www.instagram.com/p/B3BBAFFJoev/?igshid=sibhr6dc5kh1
