I did the thing and finished the fic! Depending on how tomorrow goes with work, I might be able to finish and post my soulmate au fix it fic!
This work is completely separate from my other S.W.A.T. works, you do not need to read any of those to understand this fic. I fully intend to keep this separate. And who knows? This crossover may become its own expanded universe if there’s any interest.
I’ve also never tagged people for updates, that’s a first for me, but here you go to:

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by @m-b-w and answered under the cut!
How many works do you have on Ao3?
16 at current count. I've written way more fic in my lifetime, but I've only had this account for a few years and for a handful of those I've been in an off and on creative slump.
2. What's your total Ao3 word count?
347,414
3. What fandoms do you write for?
At the moment, pretty much exclusively 9-1-1, but my previously published fics were for Legally Blonde (the musical) and Girl Meets World. And I have some drafted wips for things like Leverage and Criminal Minds that I'll probably revisit someday if the inspiration strikes.
4. Top 5 fics by kudos?
Looking for my Heart (9-1-1; Buddie)
All the Courage You Have Left (9-1-1; Buddie)
Because Reasons (Legally Blonde; Elle/Emmett)
A Missing Voice (Girl Meets World; Rucas)
The One to Survive (9-1-1; no pairing)
5. Do you respond to comments?
This is a habit I'm trying to build--so up until recently no, but I am getting more consistent about it.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Right now it's probably The One to Survive, since that one very much leaves things hanging to hopefully be continued at a later date. It's a a 9-1-1 AU that takes place right as Maddie and Chimney are headed back to LA after Maddie completes her treatment and features character death and some tough decisions.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Mm...probably Because Reasons. It's a Legally Blonde AU that has Elle and Emmett as rival teachers and is basically a condensed rom-com. Since I typically write things that are more on the angsty side, my endings are often hopeful but not necessarily happy, but this one is definitely a classic roll credits moment.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not as of yet, thankfully.
9. Do you write smut?
As a completely inexperienced and uninterested asexual, I am more of a fade-to-black, rejoin the characters in the afterglow kind of author.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I have not, but if the inspiration was right I definitely would.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
At one point someone tried to post one of my Girl Meets World fics on Wattpad, a site that I never plan on using. But it got taken down pretty quickly.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated before?
Nope
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Oof. Idk. I honestly don't know that I have an all-time OTP that I read/write/come back to over and over no matter what. There are lots of pairings that speak to me, but my focus shifts frequently.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
Twists and Turns. This was a massive Girl Meets World AU I tried to undertake. I'm not even sure that I want to finish it so much as I'm disappointed with myself that I deleted it in a fit of depression/frustration and never got to the big secret reveal I was going for, but I'm fairly certain I'll never go back to it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Asking me to compliment myself is very mean but I'm usually pretty happy with my depictions of darker feelings/trauma.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Action and endings. And the previously mentioned smut.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?
I tend to avoid it since I'm not fluent in anything except for English. I'll usually just imply it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys probably. Wanting to continue stories with them is how I discovered fandom and I think I dove in pretty quickly after that.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
Of what I have published and finished write now I'm most proud of All the Courage You Have Left (linked above). It's a 9-1-1 lawsuit era fic that takes a turn and an approach to Buck's history that I hadn't seen before, and I really loved exploring how that changed things as I was writing it.
-----
I'm honestly not sure of any folks that I follow/that follow me that are writers who would want to engage in a survey like this so I'm not tagging anyone specifically but instead, if you see this and you want to share feel free to say I tagged you!

A Third Fake Business
Tumblr media
Pairings: Riley Matthews x Lucas Friar
Summary: Based on Season 1, Episode 10 - Girl Meets Crazy Hat. A third fake business comes into operation but it's not The Matthews and Hart Umbrella Foundation.
Tumblr media
Half the class was still rolling on the sugar high from Farkle's 'cupcakes'.
So the day after, when everyone was coming down from their sugar high. The fake businesses when from two to three, without anybody noticing.
Cory declared the fake companies lesson was finished (which Farkle wasn't happy about), and announced the winner.
Looking at where Farkle Minkus was currently sat in his chair. Riley stood behind him, with a raised eyebrow and a similar posture to Topanga, with Maya and Lucas stood by the desk, backs facing the window.
"In first place," Cory started with a surprising drumroll from the rest of the class. "Riley,"
Said youngest was proud of herself, as Farkle stood up from Mr. Matthews chair. "Farkle and Riley," he says.
"No, Farkle. Just me," Riley says. "Seeing as though you were too blind for money, I decided to take my business into my own hands. You can have two businesses, right daddy?"
"Whatever you say, sweetie," Cory replied.
Farkle was stumped for a moment. "What sells better than sugar?"
"Only one thing," Riley replied. "Oh, Auggie!" In came her 5-year-old brother, fresh out of his half day at school, and Riley picked him up. "Cuteness sells better than sugar."
Cory was impressed.
"That's against the rules!" Farkle declared.
"You never said anything about another business, Mr. Matthews," Maya chimes in, a smirk on her face. Clearly the blonde was rubbing off a bit on Riley.
Cory tried to find the words. "Who's funding this?"
"I went over your head," Riley says, putting Auggie down and stood next to her father.
"You went to grandma?" He asked.
Riley giggled, resting a hand on his shoulder. "No, I went to THE boss," she emphasised. "Mom!" Riley called, and in walked Topanga.
Riley's face brightened, as Topanga stood to the side of Auggie, proud of her daughter.
Lucas swapped places with Maya, so he was now stood next to Riley. "Impressive," he tells her.
"Sometimes he forget my mother is Topanga Matthews," Riley says, looking over her shoulder at her father.

Is This Seat Taken? Ch. 13
Summary: Rucas Senior Year AU. Riley’s a loner who doesn’t really have any friends, besides her twin brother Josh but she keeps to herself in school. Something happened the year before where she missed the 2nd half of the year but she’s back for senior year and Lucas’ heart is ready. He’s had a crush on her since he moved to Philly in 3rd grade and he’s convinced this is the year they’ll move up from the class-friends label and into something more. This is not a completely fluffy fic, I’m going to be diving into some deep shit so if that’s not your cup of tea please leave *this does  include some serious depression if it goes beyond that I will trigger warn it*
A/N: Being an adult has taken over my life, but I'm still here trying to write this story if it kills me.  Words: 1024 Previous: Ch. 1 Ch. 2 Ch. 3 Ch.4 Ch. 5 Ch. 6 Ch. 7 Ch. 8 Ch. 9 Ch. 10 Ch.11 Ch. 12
Well Riley’s new stuffed animal definitely helped her mood improve slightly; she still didn’t seem to be herself.  She was trying her hardest to share and be more upbeat but she was still just sad. Her friends tried to cheer her up, trying to do things they knew she liked and tried to make her smile and she did. But she was quiet, always snuggling Rosie or Lucas.  Most people at school thought it was adorable that Lucas had gotten her a rabbit, and many couples had gotten on their partners about stepping up their game. But Charlie Gardner was not amused; on more than one occasion Lucas caught Charlie glaring at the stuffed bunny. He thought about saying something, but instead he just gave Charlie a smirk when he caught his eye. That seemed to enrage Charlie more.
“Hey Riles” Lucas asked her one day at lunch rubbing her arm softly as she leaned on him, she hummed in response slightly sleepy, “Have you noticed Charlie glaring at Rosie or is just me?”
Before Riley could respond Maya was speaking up, “Oh my gosh yes! It’s like he’s trying to destroy it with the laser eyes he doesn’t have.”
Riley rolled her eyes, “Yeah I’ve seen it, I just try to ignore it. I know he’s mad were a couple because he likes me but I’ve made it abundantly clear that I do not like him. And besides I love you so it doesn’t even matter”
Lucas beamed the way he always did when she said stuff like that and kissed her head while she continued, “And Missy glares at Rosie too, like it’s somehow going to break us up if she gets rib of my rabbit.”
Lucas scoffed, “Well I already chose you so she can back of” Riley smiled and snuggled into Lucas more and yawned, “Did you sleep at all last night Ri?”
Riley shrugged, which Lucas knew, meant no, he shared a look with his friends around the table and they all sighed. It was obvious at this point that Riley wasn’t getting better even though she was trying. Lucas had talked to Josh to see if medication was an option, but Josh wasn’t sure and told him that it was something he’d have to take it up with Riley. And that was exactly what he was going to do.
--
Riley was snuggled in Lucas’ lap after diner, she had eaten over at his house tonight and planning on spending the night as was Josh later. Their parents were in the city for a business diner and they were staying at a hotel, it didn’t bother Josh to stay in the house without his parents but it made Riley even more anxious than normal. So they both opted to stay at the Friar-Hart household for the night. Lucas was stroking Riley’s hair giving her a worried look, she hadn’t been eating much again even when he asked and tried to feed her. He sighed,  “Hey Ri? When you were in treatment did they talk about medication?”
Riley gave him a bit of a side eye, but then huffed a little “They did, but when I refused to take it or talk about it they stopped trying to push it.”
Lucas nodded thoughtful, still stroking her hair “And what about now?”
Riley gave him a confused look, “What do you mean what about now?”
“I mean, have you thought about going on medication now? I know it helps many people, and you’re doing everything you should be to be feeling better. I know yoga’s helped too. But it just seems like you should be in a better place”
Riley started to fidget in his lap and he kissed her head, “I haven’t really thought about it” Riley took a deep breath, “Okay that’s not true I have. Because you’re right I’m doing everything right and I sill feel like shit. I’m having more bad days than good days and it just feels like I’m in a funk that I can’t get out of.”
Lucas nodded, “Have you talked to your therapist about it?”
Riley shrugged, “I mentioned the idea of it but then we mostly talked about why I was so resilient to it when I was in treatment, not about how I might want to try it again”
“And why did you not want to do it in treatment?”
Riley leaned her head back looking at the ceiling ceasing Lucas’ stroking of her hair “I already felt crazy and messed up, taking medication for it just made me feel like it was solidifying my crazy. And I still feel like that sometimes, like I’m just a messed up person and medication might not even help.”
Lucas nodded, “I get that, but I think at this point you’ve tried your best without it and you’re still not better. Why not just give it a try?”
Riley leaned forward and kissed him, “Thank you”
Lucas was a little dazed by the kiss but he managed to get his thoughts together, “For what?”
“For talking about it with me, and stroking my hair because you know how much I love that.” Lucas smiled and kissed her again, “Is there anything else you want to talk about tonight before we go to bed and I use you as a pillow?”
Lucas chuckled, “Well there’s this dance coming up, and I was wondering if you’d want to be my date?”
Riley chuckled, “Lucas we’re dating, of course I’ll be your date. I wouldn’t say yes to anyone else.”
Lucas beamed kissing her again, and Riley allowed herself to be lost in Lucas until they heard a thought clearing both turned to find Josh giving them a look.
“Really guys? Can’t you do that in Lucas’ bedroom or something?” He laughed and dodged the pillow Riley threw at him before grabbing Lucas’ hand and pulling him up.
“Come on Lucas, let’s go to bed where we can finish this.” She winked and Lucas tried to ignore the red rushing to his face and the look Josh was giving him as he followed Riley upstairs.

London With You | Chapter 1
AN: hey everybody! i came up with this idea during the holidays, but never really got around to finishing it. but here we are, a month (late)r and i continued it! tbh, i hoped for this story to become a one shot. however, it eventually exceeded the one shot word count limit of 3,000. so, think of this as a short multi-chap story! i hope you enjoy reading this and i’ll see y’all in chapter 2!!
description: An au set 8 years after the Matthews’ moved from New York to London. At this point, Riley's a thriving 22-year-old woman who’s on her own, especially during this Christmas season. That is, until a young Lucas friar stumbles upon her apartment building.
pairings: riley x lucas
word count: 1,959
The cold December atmosphere fills the air, as Lucas Friar strolls through the streets of London.
He’s been walking for 30 minutes straight with one large duffle bag and at this point, no sense of direction given that his uncharged cell phone means lacking a GPS. With that, it takes all of his brain power to remember the address Asher had sent him.
It’s safe to say that this is probably one of his worsts nights. Nearly freezing to death is something he definitely does not need at the moment.
After a while, he finally stumbles upon a tall building with a name so familiar that he decides to take his chances and see if it’s the right one.
The front desk manager smiles as he sees Lucas entering the building.
“Good evening, Sir! How may I help you?” He says, still offering a bright smile.
“I was just wondering if Asher Garcia lives here?”
“Hold on, give me one sec.” The manager scurries onto his desktop and does a quick search.
“Alright, is this him?” He tilts the monitor in Lucas’ direction.
His eyes widen as he sees a photo of his friend and lets out a sigh of relief. “Yes!”
“Okay, cool! His apartment number would be 498 and that’s on level 4.”
“Thank you so, so much.”
“No problem at all! You have a great rest of your night, sir!”
Lucas flashes a slight grin at him as he heads towards the elevator doors. He hops into one of them whilst thinking about how lucky he was when finding the right building.
When he reaches the 4th floor, it didn’t take him long to find his room. Although, when gets there, he spots an envelope with his name on it, taped to the door. Lucas yanks it out and reads what it says.
Hey Buddy--
I’m so sorry about what happened with Missy. I knew you should’ve left her while you still could.  But hey, I’m not writing this letter to prove you wrong for dating that stuck-up bitch.  (Saving that for when I actually get to see you in person *wink*) I’m writing this because a family emergency came up, and I won’t be home until after the holidays. My deepest apologies! In the meantime, you can still crash at my place. I cleaned it all up for you and left a key underneath the ‘Welcome’ mat.
You make yourself feel at home now. See you soon.
Regards,
Asher.
Although Lucas was bummed out that Asher isn’t home, he didn’t necessarily saw this as that big of an issue since he just needed a place to stay. That is, until he unfolded the welcome mat to find that no key was there.
A tired sigh escapes his mouth. “Great.”
He slides down against the wall, trying to figuring out what he’s supposed to do next. He’s pretty much homeless until Asher comes back, which definitely worries him.
Seconds later, one of the apartment doors open and a woman steps out. She’s quite tall and was also dressed in athletic wear. Although, what really gave Lucas a sense of familiarity was her long brown waves. After locking her door, she turns around, enabling Lucas to practically go out of his mind.
“Riley?!”
Riley offers a double take, before exchanging the exact same reaction. “Lucas?”
Lucas couldn’t believe it. He scrambles to his feet and walks towards her.
They haven’t seen each other in ages, ever since her mother revealed that she decided to transfer to London to take up her promotion. Lucas never thought he’d see Riley ever again.
“Oh my god, hi!!” She gives him a tight squeeze. “What are you doing here in London?”
His smile slightly fades away. “If I’m being honest, I’m kind of in a crisis right now.”
She frowns. “What? How come?”
“Well, it’s a really long story.”
“Good thing I practically have all the time in the world. Do you have someplace to be?”
He laughs. “Nope. Definitely not.”
“Alright, you can crash at my place for a bit... How ‘bout that?”
“That’d be wonderful, but don’t you have someplace to be? You were just about to leave.”
“Well, I don’t really have much going on. If anything, I felt productive tonight and decided to go to the gym downstairs. But that can wait!” She smiles, unlocking her door.
Riley leads him inside, and he instantly notices the smell of cinnamon lingering through the air the moment he steps in.  Once he gets a good look at everything, he also realizes how minimalistic and neat her apartment was. She had grey walls and light-wood floors. In Lucas’ opinion, this interior design didn’t seem to match the personality of the girl he had once knew. Taking in his surroundings, he thinks about how much she’s grown since then.
Although, he still feels this familiar sense of safety. Home. He always has around her. Despite all that happened in the past couple of years, that apparently didn’t seem to change.
“So, this is my apartment. It ain’t all that big, so my apologies there.” Riley explains.
“No, I really like it. It’s quite cozy if you ask me.”
“Aw, well I’m glad to hear that! Oh, I’ve got to show you something!” She grabs his wrist and drags him into what appears to be her room.
Lucas gasps as he sees it. “No way.” Across from them lies a white bay window, similar to what Riley had growing up.
“This bay window was actually the reason why I got this apartment.” She then slightly frowns, “Too bad I don’t have anyone to share it with me.”
Lucas turns to Riley. “Maya?”
“How is she? We lost contact in a sophomore year.”
“Well, that’s because she made new best friends around sophomore year.” He scoffs, “They go by drugs, alcohol, partying, and Zay.”
Riley’s eyes widen. “You’re kidding. Zay too?”
He shakes his head. “We all tried so hard to stop them.”
At this point, she starts walking over to the bay window. Lucas trails behind her.
“What happened after?” She asks, taking a seat.
“Our whole gang pretty much fell apart after that. Too many fights and arguments went on constantly. Things were just too toxic.” He pauses. “In that very moment, I realized how fucked up we all were without you.”
“I--” Riley couldn’t seem to process what she had just heard. “I don’t know what to say. I’m so sorry--”
Lucas stops her. “Don’t apologize. It’s not your fault. As a matter of fact, I think they’re all doing pretty well currently. I haven’t been speaking to them, but rumor has it, Maya eventually ended up getting an art scholarship to CalArts.”
A smile creeps back onto her face. “Really? That’s good.”
The both of them spend the next couple hours catching up on the time that they’ve missed together. Lucas further discusses what’s been going on with the rest of the gang, even though he’s not entirely sure if his information is accurate since he’s only been hearing about them through other people.
Riley talks about her career and accomplishments. Turns out, she ended up majoring in journalism and became a fashion journalist at British Vogue. Like always, Riley never fails to keep Lucas in awe of her.
“That’s amazing. I’m so proud of you, Riles.” Promptly, the sound of Lucas’ stomach grumbling interrupts her, leaving her laughing hysterically.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry!” He laughs.
“It’s okay! C’mon, let me make you dinner.” Riley says as they head on over to her kitchen.
Lucas takes a seat on the bar stools behind the island, while she rummaged in her fridge.
“I wasn’t expecting a visitor today, therefore I didn’t really go out and buy groceries… All I have is Instant Ramen Noodles. Is that fine with you? Or if you want, I can go out real quick to get some food.” Riley offers.
“That’s fine. Do you need any help?”
“I can take it from here. Thanks, though.”
He takes a seat at her bar stool as she pours a pot of boiling hot water onto both ramen bowls. She then places one in front of Lucas whilst sitting next to him.
“So… You wanna tell me how you wounded up here?”
Lucas laughs in spite of himself. “Alright.”
“You see, around senior year of high school I ended up dating, well, Missy Bradford.”
Hearing this, Riley stops attending to her food and turns to him. “Huh, really?”
Lucas throws his hands up in surrender and drops his head down. “Look, I don’t really know what I was thinking but-”
“Lucas.” Riley interrupts. “It’s okay.”
He sighs. “But hey, during that time I was accepted to UC Davis as a veterinary major.”
“Wait, so you’re a-?
“Yes, Riley. I’m a veterinarian.” He says smiling.
Things obviously took a positive turn at this point, given that Riley hops off her seat to offer him an embrace. “I’m so proud of you.”
She thought back to when they were both at middle school and they had to work on a project about human connection for their history class. She remembered how they shared their very first connection when he told her that he wanted to become a veterinarian. It was a secret. The fact that he never told anyone, but her, meant the whole world to Riley. Even as much as hearing that Lucas actually is one right now.
“Thanks, Riles. But anyways, I was able to pursue my dream and once I graduated college, it’s like everything went at about a hundred miles per hour.” Lucas rambles on about how he was mainly stationed in California.
“About a month ago, they moved me here in London. And since I was still dating Missy during this time, she came up with the idea of moving into one of her father’s apartments just a couple blocks away from here, actually. I wish I could’ve called you or something. It would’ve made moving here so much easier.” He chuckles.
Riley drops her head down. “I can’t believe it. You were here for a whole month. You didn’t live too far away either. If only we kept in touch…”
“I know right? But hey, we’re here now. So, it’s fine.”
She looks back up at him and offers him a gentle smile. “Lucas, why were you seated in the hallway earlier?”
“We were just always fighting. I would have to come home every single day to her being such a pain in the ass. Coming home to a very toxic household isn’t that easy, Riley.” He pauses. “Especially when you come home to see another guy with her.”
Riley’s eyes widen. “She was cheating on you?”
“Yeah. This just happened two days ago, Riles. I had to leave. Miss just wasn’t worth it anymore. She never was. I packed my essentials, booked a hotel, and just left.”
“I always knew she was bad news.” She mentions, shaking her head.
“Tell me something I don’t know. Missy eventually kicked me out. Luckily though, my friend Asher offered a room at his apartment. It’s just a few doors away, actually. But he won’t be back for a while. Something came up and he had to leave.”
Riley’s eyes widen. “Asher Garcia? He lives in this building?” Lucas nods.
“I should really be getting out more!” She laughs. “But hey, you know you’re welcome to stay here for as long as you want.”
“Really?”
“Of course. I have a spare bedroom, you can stay there in the time being.”
Now it’s Lucas’ turn to give Riley a hug. “Thank you.”

Feeling generous today so here’s another snippet of another WIP!
Rocker’s knees threaten to give out with the news. He feels Tan’s hand on his shoulder, dragging him back to the present, but it doesn’t silence the ringing in his ears. He barely registers Hondo being pulled away, or maybe he walks on his own. He can’t focus. Every breath feels like shards of glass in his throat. Rationally, he should feel relief. Luca pulled through surgery. But for the last four hours, he’s felt like he was dying on that operating table alongside his partner.
“Come here.” Tan’s voice breaks through the haze for a moment and he manages to nod, focusing on putting one foot in front of the other until he’s guided into a waiting room chair. “He’s going to be okay. You heard the doctor.”
“I was supposed to be with him and Kelly today.” Rocker says, swallowing hard. “But my sister had a flat tire. I was on my way to meet up with them when I got the call. If I had been there-“
“Then maybe you both would have been shot.” Tan points out. “Don’t do this, man.”

can i be him ✗ part seven
A/N: hey guys! don’t kill me omg. this is LONG overdue and i seriously appreciate how patient all of you are. i hope you guys enjoy it! :) Words: 4,331 words Previous chapters: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six
————————————————— ❤ —————————————————
Previously...
Ignoring the heat that radiated from him being so close, she looks down at the gem sitting between her collar bones, shining brightly. She couldn’t help but grin at his thoughtfulness, “I love it.” Looking over her shoulder, she let’s a soft smile play across her lips. “Thank you, Lucas.”
Tilting his head slightly, he catches a glimpse of the necklace before his gaze meets hers. “I’m glad you like it.”
The two sit there for a moment, staring at each other, eyes gleaming with warmth and hearts in their throats. There’s a lingering tension between them and it’s painfully difficult to ignore.
When his gaze falters slightly to fall on her parted lips, it takes everything within her to not press her lips against his. When she notices the way he leans in ever-so-slightly, she knows she definitely won’t be stopping him.
————————————————— ❤ —————————————————
His hazy eyes glisten in the darkness, searching hers, as if silently asking for permission. He expected her to shy away and when she doesn’t, his hand reaches under her hair below her ear, his thumb caressing her cheek.
Her lips part slightly and her eyes fall shut as he inches closer, her heart hammering rapidly against her chest as she’s waits for him to make a move.
As soon as his lips brush against hers, a loud voice breaks through their little bubble.
“You guys!”
Flushed with embarrassment the two pull away from each other as if they’d touch a hot stove.
Damnit Maya.
As Maya assesses the situation, she notices how both of them were looking everywhere but at each other.
“Uh, did I interrupt something?”
Yes, yes you did.
Lucas coughs into his throat to his current discomfort. “Would it matter?” He asks lightheartedly as he stands.
Maya grins, “No. It wouldn’t. But I’m assuming everything is… okay?” She asks more to her Riley than him.
Riley looks up at Lucas who’s looking at her with a hopeful glint in his eyes and she flashes him a small smile before looking over at her best friend. “I’m okay.”
The blonde grins at her friend before giving her a nods. “I’ll see you guys inside.”
Before she has a chance to get up, he offers her his hand.
Albeit hesitant at first, she slips small her hand into his much larger, calloused hand, instantly liking the way they fit and how warm his was in comparison.
————————————————— ❤ —————————————————
“You guys got pretty cozy outside,” Zay points out, smirking directly at his friend before signaling towards their linked hands.
Lucas scowls at him, wishing his friend would shut up.
Blushing furiously after being put on the spot, she coughs into her fist before speaking up. “I’m gonna get a drink. Maya, Smackle?” She mutters towards the end, using this opportunity to escape.
As soon as the girls leave, Lucas punches Zay’s arm. “Can you chill?”
Zay feigns pain as he grabs his arm in horror, “I am chill!”
“Need a drink?” Josh asks, clearly amused as he offers him a bottle of beer.
“Please,” He mutters, grabbing the bottle before taking a swig.
While Lucas almost downs half the bottle, Riley is making herself a cranberry vodka, ignoring the way her friends stared at her, clearly amused.
“So are you gonna tell us what the hell happened out there?” Maya asks, getting to the point.
Riley pauses for a second before she finishes her preparation. “What was supposed to happen out there?”
“I’m more than positive that is why we are asking, Bubbles.”
“Honestly we just talked about what happen with James… Lucas is just so… sweet and sincere in comparison,” Riley reveals, hiding a small smile.
Maya smirks, “So sweet and sincere that he got you this necklace?” She teases, lifting the small diamond in her fingertips.
Blood rushes up her neck as her friends analyze the delicate necklace hanging around her neck.
“You know what I meant.”
“Is this real? I don’t even think James ever got you anything this nice,” Maya comments, raising a brow.
At the mention of James, Riley takes a sip of her drink before releasing a sigh. “There are a lot of things James didn’t do— like stay faithful.”
“Ahh,” Isadora coos, lifting her glass in agreement. “You can say that again.”
“Ugh, I knew I should’ve hung a mistletoe outside,” Maya mutters under her breath causing the latter two girls to break into laughter.
————————————————— ❤ —————————————————
Towards the end of the party, it had dwindled down to the group of 7, lounging in the living room. The air around them was much lighter than a few hours ago. It was one of those nights where they just talked about how everyone met and told each other stupidly funny stories about each other.
Unsurprisingly, Riley and Lucas found their seats next to each other on one of the couches. Every so often, the two would whisper in each other’s ear as if they weren’t sitting with everyone else. It was most likely because of the drinks they had, the alcohol breaking down the walls they kept up.
As they night went on, Riley began dozing off every few moments. The fatigue from all her crying and the buzz from the alcohol was beginning to weigh down on her.
When her head finally falls onto Lucas’ shoulder, he turns slightly to look at her with a small smile. Though he wants to ask her if she wants to go home and get some rest, he doesn’t have the heart to wake her.
Luckily, Josh speaks up, catching Lucas’ attention.
“She must’ve been tired.” He calls out to his niece who was comfortably leaning against Lucas’ shoulder, sleeping soundly, “Riley.”
Her brows furrow slightly at the sound of her name being called.
It’s when Lucas’ voice reaches her ears, when she realized she’d fallen asleep. She lifts her head slowly, immediately meeting his endearing gaze. Caught off guard and embarrassed, she straightens with a pretty blush spreading across her cheeks.
“You fell asleep,” He informs, stating the obvious.
She’s about to respond to him when she realizes everyone is staring at them, feeling even more awkward.
“I didn’t realize how tired I was,” She mutters before apologizing to her friends for falling asleep during the party.
“Relax, Riles. It’s okay,” Farkle reassures.
“Did you wanna sleep in the guest room?” Josh offers, with his arm slung around Maya’s shoulders. “It’s basically yours anyways.”
Riley chuckles, “Actually I’ll pass. I miss my bed so I’ll head home.”
“Do you want me to drop you?” Lucas asks, raising his brows slightly.
She was planning to just get a taxi but his offer was so much more appealing. “Are you sure? Wouldn’t it be out of the way?”
“I don’t mind. Besides I’d feel better knowing you got home safely.”
The rest of the group exchange sly glances, smirking or grinning to themselves. It was so obvious the two had some sort of attraction towards each other and yet they’re skirting around their feelings. Maybe if her breakup with James wasn’t so recent — things would probably be different.
Riley flashes him a small smile, “That would be great.”
“Wouldn’t it?” Maya teases with a knowing smirk before smiling innocently when the duo give her a look.
With that, the group starts getting their things together and start heading out. Lucas leads Riley to his car with his hand hovering right over her lower back as they pass bystanders who were obviously checking her out (which she was oblivious to. It was more to show that if they tried anything, they’d have to deal with him.
Every time Lucas lifted his hand over her back, all she could think about was the warmth that radiated off from it. She almost accidentally wants to lean into his touch. But she’s sure these thoughts are all influenced by alcohol. Yup, it’s definitely the alcohol.
The car ride to Riley’s is pretty comfortable, though most of it is silent. Her gaze flickering to his profile, secretly admiring how ridiculously handsome he was. She sighs, frustrated over her own thoughts they were. So much had happened today and here she was, thinking about how good looking he was. She needs to go to sleep before she does something reckless, asap.
When they pull over to the curb in front of her apartment building, he lets a small sigh roll past his lips. There’s a small sympathetic grin playing across his lips as he shifts in his seat to look at her, “I’m sorry about everything you had to go through today.”
Riley’s hand reaches out to grab his, “Why are you apologizing, Lucas? It was James’ fault. It’s not like you knew about what he was doing.” Her lips tug upwards as she reassures him.
Lucas tries not to let his features falter at her words, his fingers curling around hers, squeezing tightly. “Riley, I need to tell you something..” He says, trailing off, unable to meet her gaze.
As soon as he speaks up, she can tell something is wrong. And his grip on her hands confirm it. “What is it…?”
“It’s about James.”
“What about James?”
“Its… It’s just that—“
“You’re scaring me. Please just tell me.”
“Me and Zay ran into him a few weeks ago. This is before we found out he was dating you— we went out for drinks because it had been a while. James… He…” He begrudgingly lets go of her hand, the guilt eating him up alive as she listens to him carefully. “He had mentioned how he was dating two girls at once— when I figured out that one of them was you, I told him to stop and come clean.”
Riley’s face fell at his words, her lips tugging into a deep frown as her brows furrowed slightly. Inching away from him, she takes a moment to look at him, noticing how he’s wringing his hands together, unable to meet her eyes. “… You knew.”
The words were barely a whisper but for him they were as loud as ever. “I-I— Not exactly. We didn’t want to get involved until we knew for sure what was going on.”
“We?”
“… Me and Zay.”
“SO, both of you knew about this. You knew how much he’d hurt me— and you thought it’d be best to let him decide whether he should end this relationship.”
“I didn’t want to hurt you Riley—“
“And you thought I wasn’t hurt today? Did you think I’d never find out? Lucas, do you realize that if you were the one who told me…” She trails off, shaking her head as she tries to blink away oncoming tears.
“I’m so sorry, Riley.. The last thing I wanted was for you to get hurt. I thought that maybe he’d changed when you said things were going well between you two. I thought maybe he was going to tell you on his own…”
Riley scoffs, “He’s been cheating on me for countless months… You thought he’d tell me on his own?”
“I’m so sorry— I didn’t know how to tell you.. I wished I was wrong— I wished that maybe he was talking about someone else.”
“Well, that didn’t happen now did it?” She says, the hurt evident in her tone of voice. “I gotta go.” Before he even had a chance to say anything, she gets out of the car, slamming the door shut behind her.
He wanted to go after her and pull her into his embrace, apologizing for ever being the reason behind her pain. He ran his hand down his face, frustrated with himself for not being the one to mention it to her before she found out the way she did— evermore frustrated with James for being the idiot that he was.
The next few days are tough for both Lucas and Riley. Lucas tries to get in touch with her but its no use as she ignores all his pleas which only furthers his guilt for not telling her earlier. Riley busies herself with the bakery and her family, though all she could think about is Lucas, finding herself more upset over what happen with him than with the James situation.
“So what are you gonna do? Just ambush her at work?” Zay asks, raising a brow, as they stand outside the bakery.
Lucas gives him a look, “I’m not ambushing her, Zay. I can’t let her stay upset with me, its eating me up.”
“Alright, let’s go then.”
While Lucas and Zay are outside, taking a moment to go over the plan, Riley is complaining to Maya about the former.
“What am I supposed to do, Maya?”
“Riles, you’ve been asking me the same question for the past 100 years. Why don’t you talk to him?”
Her eyes widen in disbelief, “How can you even ask me that?”
“Is it really even his fault? It’s James who fucked it all up,” Maya points out.
“Lucas had the chance to say something and he didn’t. What about that?”
Maya shakes her head slightly before taking a sip of her iced tea. When she hears a faint familiar voice ring in her ear, she looks over her shoulder to see Zay shoving Lucas through the entrance of the bakery. Her brows rise slightly as she turns to look at Riley who’s entire focus is directed on a stubborn smudge on the counter.
“Riles,” She whispers, catching her attention only when she smacks her hand against the counter.
“What?” The confusion masked her features falls instantly when she sees Lucas and Zay making their way over to the counter, though it seems they’re in some sort of heated discussion over something. “What are they doing here?” She hisses, ducking beneath the counter, in hopes that they don’t see her.
Before Maya could say anything, Lucas approaches her while Zay heads to the bathroom.
“Hey,” Lucas greets tentatively, glancing in the blonde’s direction, slightly worried that she might kill him for hurting her best friend.
“Hey there, Ranger Rick. What brings you down here?” She asks firmly, crossing her arms.
“I’ve been trying to get in touch with Riley but… I’m sure you know, she’s been ignoring me.”
When Maya takes a proper look at him, she couldn’t help but feel sympathetic towards him when she takes note of the bags under his eyes and how fatigued he seemed. If it was anybody else, she would’ve toldl him to shove off, but she could see how much he cared for the brunette. Besides, she did feel like this situation was going to get dragged out unnecessarily if they didn’t get a chance to clear it out.
“Do you blame her?” She asks nonetheless, shifting her eyes towards the counter, hoping he’d get the hint.
Lucas furrows his brows slightly as he watches her shift her eyes and purse her lips so he could get some sort of message— OH. Thats when he realizes that Riley was currently hiding behind the counter and his heart beat picks up at the knowledge of her presence.
“… N-no, I don’t blame her. It’s just— I really miss her. I was an idiot, for not telling her about James— which I know you know about…”
Maya shrugs in response even though it was obvious.
“I can’t change anything but if she gave me a chance to prove how much I care about her.. that would mean the world. Ever since she mistook me for Dylans’ dad, I haven’t been able to get her out of my mind. If it wasn’t for James and his idiocy, we wouldn’t be here right now.” His eyes flicker towards the space behind the counter in search for her in a moment of silence before Maya’s voice brings him back.
“I’m sure thats true. Let’s say, she’s around here somewhere… What would you want to say?” Maya asks purposely, making it even more obvious that Riley was hiding right there.
Riley rolls her eyes at Maya’s.
Taking a deep breath, he takes a leap of faith as he begins to speak. “I would tell her that my feelings for her are driving me insane. I didn’t want her to think that I’d try to sabotage her relationship because I like her. And knowing that I brought any sort of pain in her life is killing me—“ He sighs, silently wishing she’d pop up from behind the counter and say something… anything. “Anyways, there’s this Annual Fireman’s Ball on New Years Eve and I wanted to invite you guys. You and Josh are more than welcome to come—Farkle and Isadora too. And well if Riley decides to give me a chance, that would be.. amazing.”
Once Zay’s back from the bathroom, Lucas gives him a nod, acknowledging that his job was done. He’s about to turn on his heel until he stops and looks at Maya. “Please tell Riley that I’d love to see her at the ‘Ball.”
Riley listens to him thoughtfully, a silent sigh rolling past her lips. She could sense his presence lingering for a moment before he uttered his goodbye and left when Zay returned.
Rather than waiting for her to pop back up, Maya made her way around the counter and joined her on the ground. “How ya feelin’?”
Running her hand down her face, her friend sighs. “Conflicted. I don’t know.”
“Don’t you think you should give him a chance? He seemed pretty sorry, Riles.”
“He’s sorry. James is sorry. Everyone’s sorry, Maya. Hell, even I am sorry!” She blurts in frustration, rolling her eyes. “I’m sick of prioritizing these guys over myself. I just— I need some time to think over all this.” With that, she rose from her position and returned to work.
Maya couldn’t blame her, considering how rough things had been for. She didn’t want to force her into anything. However, something told her that she’d be making a decision very soon.

riles i need to tell you smth asap on my way over rn
Its been a few days since Lucas stopped by the bakery and all Riley could do was think about what he said. She knew it was more James’ fault than it was Lucas’. It was just so humiliating and painful knowing that this could’ve ended in a completely different way if she had known in advance. It was because she knew their relationship was doomed to begin with which made this entire ordeal even more frustrating.
When she hears the door open, she knows its Maya. “Hey Maya, what’s going on?” She asks, as her best friend makes her way over to plop onto the couch.
“I need to tell you something.”
“What is it?”
“I was at my gallery and guess who I ran into?”
“Who?”
“Zay and his girlfriend. Apparently she really loves my work and wanted to buy one of my paintings.”
Riley couldn’t help but smile, “Aw, Peaches. I’m so happy for you.”
“Yeah, but that wasn’t what I was gonna tell you.”
“Okay, so what is it?”
She pauses for a moment. “Listen Riles, we haven’t talked about what happened at the bakery when Lucas dropped by. I respected your wishes but after everything he said, don’t you think you should talk to him?”
The smile falls from her lips when Maya decides to bring the topic up, letting her head fall back onto the couch pillow. “I knew you were gonna say something sooner or later.”
“He basically said he had feelings for you. How are you not going crazy yet?! I know you feel something for him.”
“How are you saying that so confidently?”
“Maybe because even while you were with James, you thought about Lucas. He was there for you when James was fooling around with other girls.”
Riley’s chest tightens at the thought. Though she was thinking about Lucas lately, she had been repressing the details of her failed relationship. “I really can’t hide anything from you, can I?”
Maya grins slightly, “No, you can’t. What I wanted to tell you was that Zay and I were talking about the whole situation with you guys… there’s this girl named Emily— apparently she’s related to his brother in law— whatever, I dunno. But she’s like super obsessed with Lucas and she invited herself to the Fireman’s Ball thing tonight in attempt to win him over.”
Riley couldn’t but frown in distaste at the thought of some girl throwing herself at him. “Where are you going with this?”
“Riley. Do I need to spell it out for you? You heard Lucas that day— he basically confessed that he has feelings for you. And it’s pretty obvious you feel the same. You have to go tonight and win your man! Besides, Me, Josh, Farkle and Smackle are gonna be there too.”
————————————————— ❤ —————————————————
It’s finally the night of the Fireman’s Ball which was being hosted at the Four Seasons. The hall was bright with decorations, drinks, and firemen and their dates who were dressed to the nines.
“So, they’re all here,” Zay tells his friend.
Lucas straightens his back to look around the crowded room, “Is she here?”
Zay purses his lips, “Uh, you can find out but I don’t think I saw her.”
Clearly disappointed, his shoulders fall slightly. “I guess I’ll go say hi.” With that, he made his way over to the two couples. “Hey guys,” He greeted, with a weak grin.
They all flash him varying smiles of sympathy.
“Hey, Ranger Rick,” Maya greets, leaning into Josh’s side.
“Hey Lucas, thanks so much for inviting us,” Josh tells him with his arm wrapped around her petite waist.
“You look great,” Farkle points out almost bitterly. Though it was mostly due to how his significant other couldn’t stop telling the others how good looking he was.
“You can say that again,” Isadora says, though she was saying it more to get a rise out of her husband.
Lucas couldn’t help but chuckle, “I’m glad you guys could make it. You guys look amazing,” He tells them with a slight grin.
“You too, man,” Josh tells him. When he notices how he looks around in search for something— someone — he speaks up. “She’s not here.”
“I’m sorry, I tried..” Maya trails off with a slight shake of her head.
“It’s okay, I should take the hint now and just… let it go. C’mon, let’s get you guys some drinks.”
Lucas had introduced the group his friends and members of the squad. They had gotten along pretty well with everyone. Though Emily had made her entrance about an hour ago and stuck by his side ever since, his mind was still on the brunette who turned out to be a no-show.
He was starting to feel pathetic.
He looked over at Emily who smiled up at him, running her hand down his arm.
“So, will you be by my side at midnight?”
“I guess we’ll have to wait and see, huh?” He says evasively, trying to ward her off. Besides the fact that Riley decided not to come, the night by rather well. He didn’t want to put a damper on everyone’s moods and made sure to have a round of drinks and join in on a few conversations.
There were only a few minutes till the ball drop. While Lucas was desperately trying to get rid of Emily so he wouldn’t have to kiss her, she kept trying to find her way back to him. He looked over at Zay for help but he was too busy talking into Vanessa's ear.
Everyone was getting together with who they wanted to bring in the new year with and all he could think about how he wanted to get out of here and drownhis sorrows with the help of alcohol—alone. When it dawned upon him he had the choice to leave rather than sticking around with Emily, he decided to do so.
"Hey Em, I'm actually gonna head out," He says before finishing the rest of the drink he had. Before she had a chance to retaliate, he swiftly turned on his heel to make his way out of the hall in hopes that she doesn't follow him. Slipping out past the front doors, he made his way over to coat-check. A small sigh escapes his lips w when he overhears how there was only a minute tell the big ball drop.
"Leaving so soon?"
Though Lucas had more than a few drinks to calm his nerves, he felt himself tense at the sound of her voice. Turning around he found himself looking down at a flushed Riley Matthews-- whose sight made his heart skip a beat. Her hair was styled in loose curls, falling around her face. She donned black dress with a glittering transparent sleeves. The front was a low-cut but wasn't too revealing, and it clung to curves in all the right places before flaring out into a full skirt mid-way down her legs. She looked classy and ridiculously sexy all at once.
At a loss of words, he shakes his head with a incredulous chuckle escaping his lips. His eyebrows rise slightly, in awe of her presence. "Hey."
“FIVE…”
"Hi," She greets shyly pulling a lock of hair behind her ear.
“FOUR…”
"You came."
“THREE…”
"There's nobody else I wanted to ring in the new year with."
“TWO…”
Though he’d left the hall, the countdown to the New Year had begun. The crowd was counting down around them and they couldn't stop staring at each other, taking a step closer with each number.
“You look…”
“ONE…!”
He couldn’t find the words to describe how beautiful she looked. But as soon as the crowd reached the last number, he attacked her—there was no other way to describe it. He took her lips with his as though they belonged to him. Sweet Lord, he kissed the way he fought fires: effortlessly, powerfully, and with complete assurance. One of his hands came up to caress her jaw, just as his other found its way around her hips to pull her tightly against him. The heat from his body was making her dizzy. She whimpered sweetly in her throat.
The two pull away begrudgingly, their hearts in their throats. Her fingers are clutching at his biceps, breathless from the kiss which left her wanting only more.
“You have no idea how long I’ve been wanting to do that,” He whispers, his breath warm against her lips.
Though there was so much she wanted to talk to him about, she decided to push it to the side for now.
She smiles slightly. “Happy New Year,” She teases before rolling onto her toes to push her lips against his, her arms wrapping around his neck.

all the lonely people ( chapter 4 )
She’s on a long journey back to her roots; he has no intention of returning. “Home” is both the departure and the destination, but neither Riley nor Lucas are quite sure they know what it means, or if they know where it actually is. But when fate brings them together on the open road, both of them come to realize that perhaps the destination doesn’t matter so much–and that maybe home isn’t something, but someone.

Chapter: 4 ( franklin, tn - birmingham, al ) [ riley ]
Previous Chapters: 1 2 3
Word Count: 11,600+
A/N: this took longer then i expected it too, but hopefully those of you who were waiting didn’t mind, enjoy !!
The first coherent thought that Riley has after Lucas insists they have to leave is that she left without brushing her teeth.
She’s not exactly sure what else to think, her heart pounding against her rib cage and her knuckles are white as she grips the steering wheel. Lucas is looking over his shoulder every couple of seconds, almost as if he’s looking for someone. She’s not exactly sure what caused him to push them to leave so soon, but she trusts that he has a legitimate reason.
As they drive, her foot never wavering on the gas, she can feel the anxiety, the adrenaline, and most notably the fear rolling off him in waves. She’s not going to ask questions, not that she thinks he would answer if she did. That’s something she learned from Evan. Sometimes, there are questions that you don’t need to ask.
Besides, she feels like she’s asked him enough questions for now.
It takes forty-five minutes and about twenty-five miles between them and Franklin before she sees Lucas breathe out a sigh of relief. He settles into his seat a little bit and flicks his eyes around the car before they land on her. She smiles slightly as her eyes meet his.
“Uh, sorry about all of that,” he says after a second, his words sounding foreign in the silence of the car. She hadn’t dared turn the radio on when they were driving, in case something was seriously wrong.
“It’s alright,” she says, and it is. Her heart is still beating faster than normal, but now that she’s fairly sure they aren’t going to die, at least not today, she can lighten her foot on the gas and her hands loosen on the steering wheel.
“No, it’s not. I didn’t mean to scare you like that or anything.” He clears his throat and adjusts slightly in his seat.
“Lucas, it’s fine,” she insists, nodding when she can already see him ready to argue with her. She hopes that the look on her face is enough for him to realize that she’s telling the truth. She can see him bite his lower lip and she nods again.
They sit in silence for another couple of minutes, the only noise coming from the engine and the soft tapping of Lucas’s fingers against the knee of his jeans. Riley becomes aware once more that she didn’t have time to brush her teeth before they left. Lucas must see a strange look on her face because he laughs lightly.
“What?”
“What are you making that face for, do I smell bad?” Lucas asks. Riley giggles, the familiar feeling of their normal conversation returning.
“Hardly. I told you earlier and I meant it. You smell good.” Lucas grins. “Someone is fishing for compliments.”
“Hey!”
“Shockingly enough, the facial expression I was making had absolutely nothing to do with you.” Lucas laughs again, the sound filling the small space of the car and Riley’s heart speeds up again, this time because of something else entirely.
“So what was the face for? If it had nothing to do with me.”
“If you really must know, I was thinking about how I didn't get a chance to brush my teeth this morning.” Lucas’s laughter quiets after that and she can feel the guilt replacing the earlier anxiety and fear. “Since you’re Mr. Hygiene over there, I’m a little ashamed I can’t keep up, that’s all.”
Lucas is silent next to her, and not for the first time, she wishes she could read his mind. She can never quite tell what he’s thinking based on his facial expression. People had always told her that she wore her heart on her sleeve, or well on her face, but Lucas was not like that at all.
“You don’t have to explain to me what was going on,” Riley says after a couple minutes of no conversation.
“Riley.”
“Lucas.” She flicks her eyes from the road to look at him, smiling softly. “I trust you.”
Lucas’s face softens, and he looks surprised by her words. She can’t help but wonder if this is something that he doesn’t hear very often. She does trust him though.
“We’re fine, everything’s fine. You don’t need to tell me anything.”
“Thank you,” Lucas says softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
They fall silent again and Riley hums softly to herself. She finds herself humming the same music that Lucas had been playing for them yesterday, smiling fondly at the memory. Looking around the world outside the car, she realizes that they’re completely alone on the road and briefly wonders if that’s maybe why Lucas was finally a little more relaxed. She also could see a rain cloud hovering in the distance, no doubt they would hit it at some point.
“Hey, can you look at the map and figure out which way we’re supposed to go? Since this was a detour, I really have no idea where we are.”
“We’re lost?”
“I never said that, I just need to know which way to go. Once I know how to get us on the highway, we’ll be golden.”
“That sounds a lot like us being lost,” Lucas practically sings, pulling the map out of its new home in the glove compartment and spreading it out across his legs. She could see him running his fingers along the creases of map, his bottom lip between his teeth.
“You know, you don’t sound very freaked out even though we might be lost,” Riley notes. She hasn’t reached any kind of panic levels yet, but his level of calm somehow makes her more nervous.
“Well, we’re lost in the sense that we don’t know where we are, but it’s not like we’re in the middle of nowhere without any gas and zero map. There’s really nothing to freak out about.” Lucas shrugs, directing his attention to her for a second to raise his eyebrows before his eyes are back on the map. “For now just keep going straight.”
“You sure about this? What if I missed the highway turn?”
“Riley, do you trust me?” Riley sighed, taking a deep breath. Looking at Lucas, there was a soft expression on his face, and she smiled.
“Yeah, I do.”
“Then just keep going straight, I think I figured out how to get us on the highway.”
“Alright.” When she sneaks another look at him, he’s hunched over the map again, his eyebrows crinkled together. She can see him mouthing the names of the different highway routes and she smiles. “Thank you.”
Lucas looks up again, meeting her gaze, a small smirk on his face. “No problem.”
About three hours later, after successfully finding themselves in the right direction, Riley’s stomach growls. She groans, her hands faltering slightly on the wheel. They had been sitting in comfortable silence for most of the journey and Riley hadn’t even been paying attention to what time it was.
“Hungry?” Lucas inquires from the passenger seat, his eyes flicking from the window to her, a small smirk on his face.
“No, I’m fine,” she insists, clearing her throat.
“I think the cows outside heard your stomach growl and proceeded to run away because they know how much you love hamburgers.”
“Ha Ha, very funny.” She sees the smirk on his face grow as a soft laugh escapes his features. The sight brings a smile to her face and she has to look away so he doesn’t notice.
Looking at the dashboard clock she notices that it’s almost noon, the candy bar that she and Lucas had split for breakfast this morning hardly tiding her over and seeming like eons ago rather than mere hours. It had been an exciting morning, she supposed.
Riley began scanning the surrounding area, looking for a sign, a restaurant, any place that had food that they could stop at. Unfortunately they seemed to be in a rather desolate part of whatever state they were in. Lucas had taken over the navigating, simply pointing her in whatever direction they were supposed to be going on, so she hadn’t been paying much attention to where exactly they were.
“Why don’t we stop there?” Lucas says, nodding at a little gas station on the side of the highway. It doesn’t even look open, let alone someplace where they could find food.
“Are you sure that place is even open?”
“The sign is lit up.” Riley opens her mouth to say something but Lucas cuts her off. “Look, this is the first place I’ve seen for miles and your stomach has been growling for the last ten minutes. Just pull over.”
Sighing, because well, he’s right, she puts her blinker on and turns into the small parking lot. She hasn’t seen any place to stop for miles and it doesn’t look like there’s anything up ahead.
The place looked even more abandoned up close. There was only one other car in the vicinity. It gave Riley the creeps.
Parking the car, she stayed in her seat for a moment, killing the engine. Lucas was looking at her and she could tell he was reading her expression. She tried not to blush under his gaze.
“Alright well, guess we should go in and see what they got,” he said after a moment, unbuckling his seatbelt and stepping out into the sunshine. It was unlike him to be the go-getter in their dynamic, but she gladly let him take the lead on this one. “You coming?” he asked once he had shouldered his bag, raising an eyebrow and closing the car door.
Taking a deep breath, she shook her head, mentally chastising herself for being so spooked. It was a gas station on the side of the road, plenty of people probably stopped here, they just well, weren’t here right now. Besides, Lucas didn’t need to find out how much of a scaredy cat she was.
Grabbing her wallet, she took the keys out of the ignition and rounded the car. Lucas had wandered away a couple feet, examining the posters in the windows, no doubt trying to get a proper read on the place.
“You alright?” he asked once she had joined him, his eyes not moving from the sign in the window. He had taken a step closer to her though, and she wondered if he had noticed that he had done it.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just pretty sure I’ve seen this place on Buzzfeed Unsolved, that’s all.” Riley tightened her grip on her wallet, wishing that she could reach out and grab his hand to hold onto and ground herself.
Lucas didn’t offer her any kind of response to that comment, merely squinting at her in confusion briefly before shaking his head. “Well, from the looks of it, they have hot dogs, do you like hot dogs?”
“Sure, hot dogs are great.”
“Good, because that’s what they have.”
“Then that’s what I’ll eat.”
“Good.” Narrowing her eyes at him, Lucas merely smirked, a light laugh escaping his lips. “You’re not like scared, are you?”
“Scared? No of course not, that’s a crazy assumption to make.” Riley scoffed.
“Really, because your knuckles are white from gripping your wallet so tight and your voice is shaking,” Lucas noted, opening the front door for her. She smiled at him before entering, refusing to actually take a step in until she could feel him behind her.
“I am not scared,” Riley whispered once the door had closed behind them. Lucas merely hummed, clearly not believing her.
Taking a look around, Riley noticed that they did in fact have hot dogs, a couple spinning in a oven-type contraption over in the corner, along with a couple aisles of potato chips and other snacks. However, the fridge in the corner seemingly held exclusively alcohol and after last night, Riley didn’t think she needed to drink again for a while.
“If you’re really nervous, just stay near me. I won’t let anything happen to you,” Lucas whispered after a couple of seconds. The guy behind the counter was eyeing them and Riley gave him a tense smile, which he didn’t return.
“Thanks,” she said, feeling Lucas’ hand hovering near her lower back. Together they walked up and down the aisles, neither one of them making any move to grab anything. It didn’t take long though before Riley was sufficiently spooked and she was elbowing Lucas rather aggressively, to which he made no comment about, for them to hurry it up and get out of there.
Grabbing two hot dogs, they each paid for their own, Riley refusing to make eye contact with the cashier as she did so, before exiting the store. As they entered the early afternoon sun, Riley let out a breath that she didn’t know she was holding and sent a grateful smile at Lucas as they ambled back to her car.
She tried to not get butterflies when he sent her one back.
“This reminds me of my first date,” Riley commented as she polished off the last bite of her hot dog. She was sitting on the hood of her car, her feet dangling slightly above the asphalt. While Riley had been desperate to escape the creepy gas station, she hadn’t wanted to eat while driving, so she had pulled over about a mile away.
“How exactly does eating gas station hot dogs on the side of the road remind you of your first date?” Lucas asked, looking up from the ground for the first time since they had stopped. He was standing next to the car, leaning against it slightly.
He always seemed to be leaning against it. Whenever she pictured him in her head, he was always leaning against the side of her car.
“Well, okay, not the exact notion of eating gas station hot dogs on the side of a deserted highway. But my first date involved eating food on the side of the road. Granted the food was pizza and the street was in New York, so there were quite a few more people around. But in it’s simplest form, the two events are pretty much exactly the same.”
Lucas had an eyebrow raised and definitely looked like he was trying not to laugh at her, but he nodded. “If you say so.”
“I do say so, thank you very much.” Lucas laughed then, and they made eye contact. Riley tried to ignore the way her heart raced in her chest when he smiled at her, so she pulled her eyes away, looking down at the hood of her car.
“Hopefully your first date was a little more romantic than this.” It was Riley’s turn to laugh and she thought back to her first date. She had been a sophomore in high school and it had been with Charlie, her first boyfriend. It was nothing overly special, but it had been fun.
“I mean, we kissed and then I dated him for three years.” Riley shrugged, wiping her hands with her napkin.
“And how was that?” Lucas asked. His voice significantly softer than it was before, which was curious.
“Cheesy.”
“Cheesy? That bad huh?”
Riley laughed. “No, he still had cheese from the pizza on his lip.”
She looked at him. Lucas crinkled his eyebrows together, but shook his head, a small laugh escaping his lips.
Riley wanted to ask him about his, first kiss and date that is. He was an attractive guy and based on what she had seen on his license, he was cute as a teenager too, almost unfairly so. He had probably had a girlfriend in high school.
However, before she could work up the courage, Lucas was moving and grabbing his backpack from the ground next to him, balling his trash in his hand.
“We should get going, if we wanna hit the next destination by nightfall.” Riley didn’t even know what the next destination was. “Do you want me to drive?”
“Why would you think I want you to drive?” she asked, a hint of teasing in her voice. Lucas rolled his eyes, holding his hand out for the keys.
“Because I know you like to take naps after you sleep.” Riley scoffed, her mouth falling open slightly, while Lucas only laughed.
“I do not!” she exclaimed, crossing her arms.
Unluckily for her, at that very same moment, she felt a yawn crawling up the back of the her throat and couldn’t hide it. Lucas smirked.
“Alright fine, I am feeling a little tired so I guess you can drive.”
Lucas smiled triumphantly when she handed him the keys, pocketing them before holding his hand out again to help her off the hood.
This time, she doesn’t even try to ignore the butterflies.
Ultimately, she doesn’t end up napping during the drive.
Mainly because she doesn’t want to make Lucas drive by himself, essentially. It’s not that she doesn’t trust him, in fact, she has so much trust instilled in him as he drives her car it surprises her how not nervous she is. But, she wants to keep him company.
They settle on playing the license plate game. Which is harder than it usually is, considering how abandoned the roads are. In fact, the game starts because they finally spot another vehicle on the road with them.
“That car is from Alabama,” she noted when the car drove by them going in the opposite direction. “Oh, license plate game, A!”
Lucas nearly jumped in shock at the sheer volume of her voice. She had been rambling, mainly talking at him rather than with him for the last twenty minutes or so, talking casually about classes she had taken in college, trying not to get too distracted by his fingers tapping against the steering wheel as he drove.
“You wanna play the license plate game?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at her. She smirked, shrugging innocently.
“Yeah, why, you don’t wanna?”
“No, I want to.” She smiled, looking out the front window. “I’m just afraid of how you’re going to react when I cream you.”
“Oh really? You are. You’re going to cream me?” Riley joked, reaching over the console and tapping his arm lightly. “We’ll see about that, also who uses cream as like… a verb like that?”
“Yes, yes I am. I happen to be very good at this game,” Lucas teased, taking his eye off the road for a second to smirk at her. “And, I don’t know, I guess I do. What are you gonna do about it?”
“I suppose I’m just gonna have to cream you right back.” Her face turned red when she realized how her words could be taken. Cocking her head lightly, she looked at Lucas, laughing when their eyes met.
Those damn butterflies.
“Okay, but that’s cheating!” Lucas exclaimed about forty five minutes later. They had not been having much luck with the game, but Riley so far was boasting a three to one win over Lucas.
“How is it cheating? I happened to see a car that was from Delaware so I get D and E, I hardly see how that’s cheating,” Riley said, crossing her arms over her chest.
“You can’t just claim the next two letters of one license plate, that’s not in the rules of the game.”
“The rules of the game? Are you trying to tell me that there are actual rules to this game? And if so, how exactly am I breaking them? It’s not like I tried to say that I claimed the letter W.”
“Because, you’re supposed to go one letter at a time, you can’t jump ahead and get two at a time, that’s not fair and also against the rules.” Lucas flicked his eyes away from the road to look at her, his eyebrows raised.
“You’re just jealous that I’m winning.” Riley smirked. “If you let me have this I would have a four point lead on you, as opposed to a three point one and you just can’t handle me beating you, especially after you promised that you would cream me.”
“I am not jealous, I’m merely all about fair play. I didn’t strike you someone who played dirty.”
“I don’t play dirty, I don’t think I’m acting unfairly at all. You’re honestly just upset that I’m winning and that soon enough it’ll be too hard for you to catch up and I’ll win.” Lucas shook his head, biting his bottom lip. Riley could see him holding back a laugh, however.
“Fine fine, I do think it’s a little unfair though, because I have to keep my eye on the road and you don’t or else we would crash.”
“Well, you should have thought about that before you agreed to play, this is all really your own fault. So stop complaining and give me my two points.” Riley smirked, knowing that she had won this round.
“Alright, the score is now five to one, but I still think I have time to bounce back, besides we’re about to enter a more populated region, so more license plates.” Lucas grinned, waggling his eyebrows.
“Speaking of where we’re about to enter, I don’t even know what our destination is, you changed it and didn’t tell me.”
“Consider this one of my edits, I think you’ll like it, don’t worry.” Riley nodded. “You still trust me, right?”
Riley grinned, turning to look at him, nodding. “Yeah, I still trust you.”
It was raining by the time Riley and Lucas reached their next destination, which she now knew was Birmingham, Alabama. Not her first choice, but definitely nothing to complain about. The sky was darker than it usually would be at this time, flooding the car with darkness. According to the clock it was hardly even dinner time, but the atmosphere made her want to curl up and take a nap.
“Well, we’re here.” Lucas said, putting the car in park after situating into a parking spot. “Wish the weather was a little better, but here we are.”
“Can I ask what exactly led us to this location?” Riley asked, looking around their surroundings. The town looked nice from what she could see, there was a bustling main street, plenty of shops to see. It would be nice tomorrow to walk around a little bit before they had to leave.
“This parking spot was open,” Lucas said, and without looking away from the window, Riley reached over and punched his arm lightly. He laughed. “I don’t know, honestly. I just saw it on the map earlier and it spoke to me. I don’t really know how to describe it.” Lucas went silent for a moment. “You know what I mean?”
Riley drew her attention away from the window and looked over at him. He was gazing at her, a weird look in his eye, the streetlight and the rain drowning him in blue light. She smiled, thinking back to when she offered him a ride, a moment that seemed like months ago, but was only days.
“Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.”
They were silent for a moment, a weird energy between them that Riley didn’t understand. It sent goosebumps riding up her skin and a chill up her back. Butterflies wasn’t even the proper word to describe this feeling.
When the moment finally passed, Riley gulped, trying to find something outside the window that they could do. She didn’t want to go to the motel just yet, there was still plenty of hours left in the day.
“We should do something,” Riley said, leaning her head back on the headrest of the seat.
Lucas hummed in agreement, also looking around their surroundings. “Yeah, but what? We could get some food, but I’m not really hungry.”
Riley nodded, she was a little hungry, but definitely could hold out for another couple of hours. Spotting something down the street, she grinned. “We could go to the movies.”
“What?” Lucas looked to her, confusion etched across his features, something akin to a frown on his lips. “The movies?”
“Yeah the movies!” Riley exclaims, leaning sideways in her seat so their shoulders are almost touching. “The theater is right down there. I’ve never heard of the movie playing, but it looks like one of those cool small-town theaters.” She points out the front window waiting for him to realize where exactly she’s pointing to. “It sounds weird, but I’ve always wanted to go to a theater like that.”
Lucas doesn’t respond, merely staring out the window.
“I know it probably sounds lame and not very fun, but we’ll be dry and it will give us something to do instead of sitting in the car and staring at each other.” Not that she would be complaining if all she could do for hours on end was stare at him, but now didn’t seem like the time or place for activities such as that. “It’ll be my treat, I don’t even know what movie is playing, but it’ll be fun.”
Lucas made a show of taking a deep breath and sighing, a smile forming on his face. “Alright, alright. You win, let’s go.”
“Yay!” Moving away from him, Riley put her hand on the door handle, but paused before opening it. “One thing though.”
“Yeah?”
“We’re gonna have to run.” She hears Lucas groan as she pushes the door open, laughing when she’s immediately soaked by the rainstorm happening outside. She instantly regrets her shorts and white t shirt as she sprints across the street, taking cover under an awning. She didn’t see Lucas behind her, but she can hear the slosh of his boots on the pavement.
Once she’s safely under the awning and Lucas is next to her, she can’t help but smile. They’re both soaked to the bone and there’s a pretty good chance that Lucas can see her bra through her shirt, but she can’t even bring herself to care. Lucas shakes his head, but she can see the smile on his face.
“Do we even know what time this movie starts?” Lucas asks once they’re walking down the sidewalk. They’re walking faster than normal, and ducking under every awning that they could.
“No, but it’s about the time that movies usually start, I’m sure we’ll figure it out once we get there.” Riley shrugged, jumping slightly into Lucas as a truck went by, really not in the mood to get splashed. Lucas grabbed her arms, stopping her from falling. “Thanks.”
“No problem.”
When they reached the corner where the movie theater was nestled, Riley was pleased to see that the lights were on and that the next movie time was within the hour. She sent Lucas a smile, who merely rolled his eyes and threw his head back, before pulling the door open.
Inside, the AC was cranked and there were a couple people milling around in the lobby, but all of them were wearing the same vests and black pant ensembles. However, the girl behind the counter gave them a wide smile as they approached, almost like they were the first non-employees she had seen all day.
“Hey, you guys here for the show?” she said, the smile on her face growing when Riley nodded. “Alright, that’ll be fourteen dollars even.”
Riley pulled the money from her wallet, giving Lucas a look over her shoulder to remind him that everything was on her.
“So, you guys from around here? Most of the people who come in here are the locals, but I’ve never seen you guys before,” the girl asked, printing their tickets.
“No actually, we’re just passing through. Thought we’d stop in, get away from the rain for a little bit.” The girl handed Riley their tickets, with the receipt folded neatly on top.
“Awesome, glad we could be a stop on your adventure. Enjoy the show!”
“Thank you so much.” Riley’s eyes found the girl’s name tag and she smiled. “Haley.”
Haley smiled, waving at the two of the them as they walked deeper into the theater. Lucas was strangely quiet, spending quite a bit of time taking in their surroundings.
“You know, me paying for you makes this feel like a date,” she said when they were at the counter of the small refreshments stand. Unsurprisingly, Lucas hadn’t wanted anything, but Riley couldn’t imagine going to the movies without eating popcorn. She hoped he could read the teasing nature of her voice, but she would be lying if the idea of going on a date with him didn’t make her palms sweat.
“Oh yeah, and how so?” he asked, as she thanked the guy behind the counter when he returned with her popcorn.
“Well, usually on dates, one person pays for the whole thing, at least in my experience.” Riley popped a piece of the popcorn in her mouth, holding the bag out to him. He shook his head. “Agree or disagree?”
“I wouldn’t know,” he said softly with a shrug, stuffing his hands in his pockets. Riley wanted to ask him what he meant but they had to show their tickets to the guy at the door before they could be let in.
Either way, she found it very hard to believe that Lucas had never been on a date.
They were off the topic of dates by the time they settled into their seats in the theater itself. They seemed to have the place to themselves, and with the movie starting in less then ten minutes, Riley didn’t expect that to change, but she didn't mind it.
What she did mind however, was that it somehow was even colder in here that it was out in the lobby, which is amazing in her mind considering it felt like the arctic out there. Her wet t shirt was now almost frozen against her body, and she swore that her hair was turning into icicles. Lucas didn’t seem to be affected by any of it. If he was, he certainly wasn’t showing it.
But in all fairness, he was the one wearing pants and a jacket in August, so the joke was probably on her.
“Are you cold?” he asked softly. In the last couple minutes, she had curled herself up in her seat, wrapping her arms around her legs, desperate to generate any kind of heat. Also, she was shivering.
“No, I’m fine,” she lied, her teeth practically chattering.
“Yeah, okay.” Lucas said, standing up from his seat. “I’ll be right back.” Before she could ask him any questions, he was moving down the aisle and heading for the door.
“Lucas! Lucas, where are you going?” she whisper-yelled. She knew that there was no one else there, but it still didn’t feel right to speak louder than a whisper in a movie theater.
Lucas couldn’t have been gone more than five minutes, but it felt like eons. Riley had never noticed how creepy movie theaters were until she was in one all by herself. She swear she kept seeing things move out of the corner of her eye.
When Lucas came back through the door, her first instinct was to hug him. She didn’t though, not wanting to seem even stranger than Lucas probably already thought she was.
However, he had something in his hands that he hadn’t had when he left and she squinted at the black, balled up object in his hands as he came back down the aisle. She also noticed that he wasn’t wet, which means that the rain had probably let up.
“What is that?” she asked, even more confused when he put it in her lap as he sat down.
“It’s for you, I noticed you shivering like a chihuahua,” he said simply, shrugging his shoulders. “I remembered I had this in my bag, thought you might want it.”
“You brought me your sweatshirt?” she questioned, raising her eyebrow. She certainly wasn’t going to complain. As she unfolded the sweatshirt, it felt soft and worn in her hands.
“Yeah, don’t worry about it. Besides, I think you might like the design on the cover, might make you feel a little more at home.” He smiled, directing his attention to the screen. It was then that she noticed what the sweatshirt actually said on it and she smiled.
“I don’t live in Brooklyn, but definitely a familiar sight.” In a moment of boldness that Jade would definitely be proud of--she spent most of senior year trying to get Riley to act out of her comfort zone every once in a while--Riley reached over the seat and squeezed Lucas’s hand lightly. “Thank you.”
She swore she saw a blush creep onto the back of Lucas’s neck, but he reached up and rubbed the skin there before she could really get a good look at it. “No problem.”
They shared a small smile before she slipped the sweatshirt over her head, immediately feeling warmer.
What surprised her is that the sweatshirt not only made her skin feel warmer, but she felt a warmth in her stomach. As the opening music of the movie started, she wondered why putting on Lucas’s sweatshirt almost felt like coming home.
Riley had a hard time concentrating on the movie.
First off, it was a foreign film and without captions, so Riley really had no idea what was going on. But she would be willing to bet that even in English, she wouldn’t be able to concentrate.
And it was all Lucas’s fault.
It’s not like he was doing anything on purpose, but after he had given her his sweatshirt, all she could smell was, well, him. It was something she had noticed since she picked him up, not that she had much experience picking up people on the side of the road, but she always expected them to be dirty, have a weird smell to them.
That was definitely not the case with him.
He smelled like pine trees, which was strange considering she didn’t think Texas was known for it’s pines. There was also a hint of something that smelled kind of like the ocean, and clean laundry. All of which didn’t sound like they should mix together very well, but they did. And the smell was very distinctly Lucas.
The smell was making her head spin, and it certainly didn’t help that their arms kept brushing up against each other during the movie. It was never intentional, well she supposed some of it was on her end, but they were sharing the arm rest and Lucas kept adjusting in his seat. However, for all of his fidgeting, his eyes never tore away from the screen and she wondered if he understood what was going on, or he was just trying to avoid looking at her.
When the lights came up at the end of the movie, Riley hadn’t even noticed that the credits had been rolling, she had been so distracted. Lucas leaned forward in his seat, rolling his shoulders to stretch his upper body out. He had taken his jacket off during the movie, despite the fact that it was still freezing in here, and she could see his shoulder muscles moving under his blue t-shirt.
“Did you like it?” he asked, sending her smile.
“Uh, yeah. It was great.”
Lucas nodded, clearly knowing that she had no idea what was happening. She could see a smirk playing on his lips and she laughed softly, shaking her head.
“You had no idea what was happening, did you?” he teased, raising his eyebrow as he stood from his seat, shaking his leg out.
“No! I totally knew what was happening, I loved that part with that one girl, when she was, y’know, walking down the street.” She could tell he was trying not to laugh at her.
“Riley.”
“Hm.”
“The whole thing took place in the forest.”
Riley can feel her face become hot with blush, and Lucas has a teasing grin on his face. “Yeah well, it also was in German.”
Lucas nodded, holding his hand out to help her up from her seat. She gratefully takes it, groaning when her legs tighten upon standing. The whole concept of time has escaped her and she has no idea how long they’ve been sitting there.
“Well, I liked it,” Lucas said with a shrug, following Riley down that aisle as she navigated them out of the theater.
“You understood it?” she asked, throwing him a raised eyebrow. “Are you actually fluent in German and you never told me? You did warn me about trying to put you in a box.”
Lucas laughs, going to stand next to her when they’re back in the lobby. Riley waves at Haley, who’s still standing behind the counter, who smiles and returns her wave. However, he doesn’t answer until they’re out on the sidewalk.
“No, I’m not fluent in German and I didn’t understand what they were saying, but sometimes the human condition doesn’t need words.” He shrugs.
One thing that’s definitely surprised her about Lucas is how deep he is sometimes. Not that he strikes her as someone who’s shallow, but the profoundness of his statements has shaken her to her core on more than one occasion, and this is definitely one of them.
“Wow.” She whispers. “I guess I never thought of it that way.”
They’re silent for a moment, enjoying the cool breeze that’s replaced the earlier rainstorm. It was a beautiful August evening, and even though they had successfully killed about two hours with their movie detour, she wasn’t ready to call the night quits just yet.
“We should play mini golf,” she said suddenly, turning to look at Lucas. Lucas let out a harsh breath that sounded something like a snort. “What? You don’t like mini golf?”
“I have no problem with mini golf,” Lucas said, holding his hands up in surrender. “I’m just wondering what your logic is as to why we should play it.”
Riley ponders this for a moment, making a show of tapping her finger on her chin, this earns her a grin from Lucas. Ultimately she just shrugs.
“Well, I just treated us to a movie, and if this were a date, which it’s not, I would probably treat you to dinner, but I want to have some fun and I’m not hungry. So mini golf it is.”
“Why do you keep bringing up dates? This isn’t a date,” Lucas said, his voice soft and almost shy, if she was reading him right.
“I know, I know.” She pursed her lips. “We just were talking about them earlier, when we were eating our hot dogs on the side of the road. So they’ve been on my mind.”
Lucas nodded, looking down at the ground. They were wandering down the street, away from the theater and her car, and Riley wasn’t exactly sure where they would end up. But she was weirdly okay with it.
“I’ve never been on a date,” Lucas said after a couple minutes of silent strolling.
Many things that had come out of Lucas’s mouth had shocked her, but this one was probably the most shocking. She now understood what he had said earlier.
“I find that hard to believe.” Riley almost scoffed. She didn’t take Lucas as a liar, so she knew that he was telling the truth, but she found it very unbelievable that he had never been on a date before.
She could maybe believe that he had never had a serious girlfriend, not everyone liked being tied to someone and she couldn’t fault or judge them for that, but not one date? Lucas was by far one of the cutest boys she had ever seen in her life, how had he never been on a date before?
“Well it’s true,” he said, and she turned to look at him. She could tell he was slightly embarrassed by this piece of information. His head was down and his hands were shoved deep into his pockets. “Why do you find it so hard to believe?”
“Because you’re nice,” she said, which caused him to stare at her incredulously. This caused her to roll her eyes. “You’re also cute, and respectful. You have all the great qualities of a first date.”
“Well, thanks.”
“No problem.” She smiled, stopping on the sidewalk and looking around. Lucas stopped too, standing next to her, his elbow brushing against her arm. Even though she still had his sweatshirt on, she felt goosebumps.
She hummed, taking in the atmosphere around them. This was one of those towns that felt alive, even when there was no one around.
“So, mini golfing?” Lucas inquired after a couple seconds.
“Yeah, mini golfing,” she said, a smile crossing her lips. “You’ve never been on a date before, so I’m going to treat you to the funnest first date in the entire world. Before you say anything, I know this isn’t a date, but regardless, there’s some serious potential in this night to be the best first date both you and I have ever been on.”
She could tell Lucas was skeptical of her reasoning, but he had a small grin on his face. “Fine, it sounds like fun. This isn’t a date though, just a simulated one,” he said, pointing at her, causing her to laugh.
“Yeah, and it’s going to the be most fun simulated first date in the history of the world.”
“Not sure we have much competition on that one.”
One quick Google search and a fifteen minute drive later, Riley and Lucas were pulling into the local mini golf course, which also doubled as a shuffleboard court and an arcade.
“Wow, they have it all here,” Lucas commented when Riley pulled into one of the available parking spots. There were some families and couples milling around. It still was kinda early and there were a couple of hours left before the course closed.
“Yeah, should be fun.” Riley smiled, shutting the car off.
“I should warn you, I’m pretty awesome at mini golf,” Lucas said, nudging her shoulder with his own as they walked up the counter. Like she promised, Riley paid for their game, and thanked the guy behind the counter before her and Lucas walked out onto the course.
“You said the same thing about the license plate game and I won, so looks like this will be another victory for moi,” Riley teased, placing her ball on the ground and her hands on her hips.
“Hey, in my defense, we never finished the license plate game. By the time we were parking your car we were only on P, so technically, no one won.”
Riley rolled her eyes, turning away from him so she could hit her ball, grinning when it stopped only about an inch from the hole. “We might not have finished but I was seven ahead when we stopped, so I think I would have continued my landslide win.”
“Oh, I had plenty of time to catch up.” Lucas scoffed. “Now, you’re about to experience mini golf expertise right here, watch and learn.”
Crossing her arms, Riley watched with a smirk on her face as Lucas hit his ball (which was blue, like everything else he seemed to own), eyeing it intently as it rolled across the green. The ball sailed right past her, landing about two feet from the hole.
She clapped. “Very nice. I’m so impressed. I’ll be sure to do that on the next hole.”
“I meant to do that.”
“Hm. Sure, of course you did,” Riley said, licking her lips. She pumped her fist when her ball went in the hole with a small tap, giving her a two on the first hole.
Lucas hummed, trading places with her on the green, so she could stand on the walkway. “Not too bad, not too bad. But watch this.”
It took Lucas four tries to get his ball into the hole, and each time he made an attempt he made sure to comment about how this was all part of his master plan to beat her. This trend continued on as they made their way through the course.
By the time they hit the ninth hole, Riley was up by almost nine points. She was almost starting to feel bad, Lucas was definitely not good and he spent more time teasing her than he did paying attention to what he was doing.
“Alright, I gotta ask, when is this whole master of mini golf thing gonna kick in, because it’s been nine holes and so far, needless to say I’m not impressed,” Riley said, shaking her head.
“Hey now, is that any way to talk to your date?” Lucas scoffed, putting a hand on his hip as he nearly dropped his club to the ground. He was getting ready to hit his ball, and she had a feeling she had interrupted his concentration. Not that concentrating seemed to be doing him any good.
“I thought that this wasn’t a real date, so I think I can talk to you however I want,” she teased, strutting over to him and tapping his shoulder.
“I know it’s not a real date but it’s the principal of the thing. If this is a simulated first date, shouldn’t all the normalities be in place?”
“Maybe so, but either way. You promised me a master of mini golf.” Riley raised an eyebrow, taking a step back and sitting on the bench that was next to the beginning of the hole.
Lucas sighed, stepping back and looking at her. He had a weird look on his face and not for the first time, she was unable to read the emotions that were written on his features. Before she could try and analyze it, the expression was gone, replaced with a small smile.
“I don’t know what happened, I used to play all the time as a kid, and I was really good.” He sighed, shaking his head as he directed his attention back to the game.
It was strange for Riley to imagine Lucas as a kid. She had seen a picture of him as a teenager, and honestly, he didn’t look much different at sixteen then he did now. Maybe a little more gangly and a little more innocent then. But a kid?
She tried to picture him younger than the picture, with his front teeth missing. As much as she couldn’t imagine it, it still made her giggle.
“What?” Lucas asked, clearly thinking she was laughing at him. He still hadn’t hit his ball, taking time to line up the shot, like he was a real golfer.
Nothing. Just hit the ball, Tiger Woods.”
When they arrived at the last hole, Riley was fairly confident that she had this game in the bag. Lucas would have to get a negative six on this hole to even tie with her, so he had pretty much given up on trying to beat her.
“You’re gonna miss. You’re gonna miss. You’re gonna miss!” He chanted as she prepared to hit her ball into the hole. She was gunning for a hole in one to finish up, to be completely honest, the game of her life, and he definitely was not making it easy.
She didn’t give him any reply, not even glancing over her shoulder. Luckily for her, not even Lucas’s taunting could get to her, as her ball swiftly went into the hole, giving her a hole in one.
“Yes! Today is so my day.” She sighed, folding her hands and smiling at Lucas.
“Well, congratulations. I applaud you,” Lucas said, clapping his hands together and giving her a small bow. “You are officially queen of mini golf, and as the master, I give you the title.”
“Thank you, thank you.” She curtsied. “I appreciate that you’re finally admitting my victory.”
“Well, this one was fairly earned, I can’t argue with this one.” Lucas said, putting his hand on her shoulder and squeezing it lightly. “The license plate game is still up for debate and to be continued tomorrow when we start driving again.”
“Fine, fine.”
“Really though, you played a good game.” Lucas smiled. “You play a lot as a kid?”
Riley shrugged, making her way over back to the front counter to return their clubs and balls. “Not really, there aren’t many places to play mini golf in the city. There was a really fun place to play in New York City indoors though. Charlie took me there a couple of times.”
A weird look passed over Lucas’s face when she said Charlie’s name, but she figured it was out of confusion more than anything else. She was surprised though when Lucas clutched his heart dramatically.
“Oh no, no no.” He groaned, shaking his head. “Indoor mini golf is not real mini golf! This is real mini golf.”
“How is indoor mini golf not real mini golf?” She asked, leading the way back to her car. When they reached the car, she leaned against the hood and cross her arms, looking at him.
“It’s just not the same. This is real mini golf, it was built on the solid ground, it deals with weather, it’s got landscape. Character. Indoor mini golf is just people hitting balls around in a controlled environment. It’s not the same.”
“Alright, so that brings the list up to three.”
Lucas’s eyebrows drew together in confusion, his head tilted to the side slightly. “What list?”
“The list of things that Lucas Friar takes much more serious than anyone else on the planet. First was macaroni and cheese, then grilled cheese, and now mini golf.”
He shrugged, not seeming insulted by her comment. “I gotta say the list name could use some workshopping.”
Riley merely rolled her eyes, moving to get in the driver’s seat, but Lucas stopped her before she could, reaching into her sweatshirt pocket and grabbing the keys. She gasped, crossing her arms over her chest.
“What are you doing? Are you really about to tell me that I can’t drive my own car? It’s not like I’m drunk.”
Lucas shook his head, examining her keys in his hand, tossing them up in the air. She tried to grab them, but he caught them in his fist, continuing to shake his head.
“I know, and I’m not saying you can’t drive, but this night’s not over yet.” Now it was her turn to be confused. She could feel her eyebrows crawling up her forehead, and Lucas laughed softly at her expression. “Just, trust me, alright. You trust me, right?”
“I think we’ve established that I do very much trust you,” she said, smiling. “So alright, take the keys, take me to a mysterious location. My life is in your hands.”
They shared another small smile before Riley climbed into the passenger seat. Despite the fact that Lucas had now driven her car a couple of times, it still felt weird to sit in the passenger seat rather than behind the wheel. She did enjoy how much easier it was to watch him from this seat though, so she wasn’t going to complain too much.
However, this time she was nervous. She had been telling the truth, she did trust Lucas, and she knew that he wasn’t going to be taking her anywhere to put her danger. No, this was a different kind of nervous, the butterflies that had been fluttering about earlier back and more active than ever.
“This is gonna be fun, I promise,” Lucas assured her as he started her car. He was grinning, and he reminded her of a little kid on Christmas.
The sight warmed her heart and she really couldn’t put her finger on why.
About forty minutes later, Riley was officially impressed.
She really had no idea what to expect from Lucas, and she should have known that he would pull of something totally out of left field. He had been surprising her all day.
But this was definitely not what she was expecting at all. They had stopped at a gas station on their way to their destination: Riley had made an off-hand comment about wanting ice cream so Lucas had run in and grabbed one of those giant tubs of chocolate ice cream and two spoons.
“We’ll eat when we get there, just hold onto it for right now. Don’t open it without me, though,” he commanded, pointing to her across the console.
“Noted.”
Turns out “there” was out in the middle of a field. At first, Riley really didn’t understand why they were there, but when she followed Lucas’s lead and got out of the car, she lost any words she could have said.
“Impressed?” Lucas asked, settling himself on the hood of her car, grabbing the ice cream from her hands so she could climb up herself and join him.
She nodded, still at a loss for words, sighing when she leaned back on the windshield, staring up at the sky above. She swore she had never seen anything so beautiful.
“I know I said I had never been on a date before, but a lot of my friends had and this was always the stuff that they did. Go out and look at the stars.” She tore her eyes away from the beautiful tapestry in the sky to look at him. He was staring up at the stars, a wistful smile on his face. “While this still isn’t a date, I thought I would show you the Texas version of a first date.”
She nodded, giggling softly.
“You know, when all's said and done, we’re still eating food on the side of the road,” she said, smirking when she popped the tub of the ice cream open. “I guess it doesn’t matter where you go on your first date, they’re all the same in the end.”
Lucas laughed, shaking his head. But he accepted the spoon she handed him and they spent a couple minutes in silence, occasionally taking bites of the ice cream.
Riley couldn’t take her eyes off the sky above her. She didn’t even know that there were this many stars in the universe. She had always loved stars, but she had never gotten to see them for herself.
Half a tub of ice cream later, Riley and Lucas were both completely lounged back on the windshield of the car, their shoulders pressed up against each other as they looked up at the night sky.
“So that’s the big dipper and that’s the little dipper,” Lucas whispered, pointing up above them to show her the constellations. “It’s kinda hard to point out from all the way down here, but they’re in that general area.”
Riley giggled, adjusting her body, her knee bumping against him. She was very aware of how close they were, but it didn’t feel weird. In fact, she had never been more comfortable in her entire life.
“There’s nowhere in New York where you can see the stars this well,” she sighed. She could feel his gaze on her and she sent him a small smile. “All my experience with the stars has been through a computer screen, or with the glow up stickers on my ceiling. I’m sure there are places in California where I could have seen them, but stargazing wasn’t exactly a popular extracurricular.”
Lucas laughed softly, nodding his head. “Well I’m glad I could show you this part of the world. I think everyone should get a chance to experience the stars like this.”
“You know, this may not be a real date, but it’s probably the most romantic night of my life. Charlie and I never did anything like this.” Riley commented, sitting up and bringing her knees to her chest.
“That’s like the third time you’ve mentioned this guy. Charlie. Was he your first boyfriend? The one you talked about this morning,” Lucas asked, sitting up as well so they were side by side.
Riley nodded, weirdly, not feeling weird when talking about her ex boyfriend.  “Yep. We dated all throughout high school.”
“What happened?” Lucas asked, his voice quiet and nervous almost. “Sorry, you don’t need to answer that, I don’t even know why I asked.” He shook his head, looking down at his hands, which were threaded together tightly, clearly embarrassed.
“No, it’s fine.” She shrugged. “Nothing bad happened or anything, he and I are still friends, actually.” Looking down at the hood of the car, she picked up her ice cream spoon, spinning it in her fingers. “We just didn’t have enough of a spark to try dating after high school. He was a great high school boyfriend, he was nice, my parents liked him, we had fun together, but I didn’t really feel anything for him when we were getting ready to go off to school.”
Lucas nodded, looking like he was processing this information. “That makes sense, I guess.” He laughed softly. “So you did it all in one sweep. First kiss, first date, first boyfriend.”
Riley grinned, tugging at the sleeves of his sweatshirt over her hands. “Yeah, I guess I did. Probably makes me pretty boring, but Charlie and I… our relationship wasn't exactly exciting.”
“Nothing wrong with that, sometimes boring can be good.”
“I mean, I won’t argue with that, but I think while there’s nothing wrong with the relationship itself being boring, the chemistry shouldn’t be boring too.”
Lucas bit his lip, shrugging his shoulders. “Yeah, I guess that makes sense.”
“Well, enough about my old relationships. What about you?”
“Me? I thought we already established that I didn’t have any stories. No dates, remember.”
Riley scoffed, adjusting on the car so she could look at him. “Dates aren’t the only aspect of a relationship, even if you’ve never been a date doesn’t mean you don’t have any stories. What about your first kiss? Tell me that story.”
“Wait did you say relationships just now? Do you have more than one?” Lucas asked, turning to face her, clearly trying to put the attention back on her.
“I had a boyfriend in college named Evan, we dated for like six months, but this isn’t about me,” Riley said, rolling her eyes. “I wanna hear a story, c’mon. I’ve told you some, I think I deserve some in return.”
Lucas groaned, putting his head down. He took a deep breath before lifting his head up and looking at her. He was twisting his hands together and she could tell he was nervous for some reason.
“Fine, fine. Truth is...” He paused. “Nevermind. Let’s just change the subject.”
Shaking her head, Riley adjusted again so she could place herself in his line of vision. “No, tell me. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about.” Realizing that probably wasn’t the right thing to say, she sighed. “I mean, you don’t have to tell me, but if you want to, you have no reason to be embarrassed and you can trust me.”
“Really?” Lucas muttered, meeting her gaze.
“Yeah, really. I’ve been telling you all day that I trust you, and I really do. And now, I want you to trust me,” Riley said, putting her hand on his arm, squeezing it lightly.
“Alright. Well, the truth is...” He took another deep breath, avoiding eye contact again.
“I haven’t had my first kiss yet.”
“Oh,” Riley whispered.
“Yeah, it’s kind of… well, it is what it is,” Lucas said, his face and neck bright red. “You don’t need to say anything.”
“No, it’s not that bad.” She shrugged. “So, when you say never had a first kiss, do you mean like your first kiss, or your first kiss,” Riley said, moving her hand in a circular motion when she said the last kiss.
“Okay, you’re saying the same word so I don’t really know what you mean.”
Clearing her throat, Riley pushed her hair from her face, happy she could provide him with this information. “There are different tiers of first kiss, your first kiss and your first kiss.” She put the same emphasis on the second kiss, moving her hand again. “Your first kiss is a peck, your lips touch but there’s not much else to it, it’s middle school stuff, but of course when it happens in middle school, it seems like the best thing in the entire world.”
Lucas examines her curiously, listening intently as she explains the difference.
“Then there’s your first kiss, that’s like, the first real kiss you ever have, I guess. It’s a lot deeper than a peck, and there’s definitely more feelings involved.”
Lucas nods slightly, absorbing this information. However, after a couple seconds of absorbing, he shakes his head.
“Nope, no lips have ever touched mine.” He shrugs. “My classmate Vanessa kissed my cheek after I helped her hang up a poster once, but I don’t think that counts.”
Riley giggles, nudging her shoulder against his. She sends another glance to sky, smiling at the stars.
“Thanks,” he says softly, bringing her attention to him again.
“What are you thanking me for?”
“For not laughing. It’s pretty weird, being in your twenties and never having kissed anyone before. I appreciate that you didn’t like, laugh or anything.”
“I would never laugh at you for something like that,” she murmured. “And it’s nothing to be embarrassed about, everyone reaches those milestones in life at different points. No big deal.”
Lucas smiles at her and for some reason, her eyes are drawn to his lips. She’s surprised that no one’s ever kissed him before. His lips look perfectly soft.
“You know,” she said, putting a piece of her hair behind her ear. “I can change that for you, if you want.”
Riley had no idea what came over her for her to suggest something like that. Like many other things she had done in the last four days, it was not something she usually did. But now it was out there and there was no taking it back.
“What are you talking about?” Lucas asked, his eyes narrowing in confusion.
Their eyes met and if Riley thought the stars in the sky were beautiful, it was only because she had never seen Lucas’s eyes this close up. Her heart was beating erratically in her chest and she was pretty sure that the goosebumps on the back of her neck were from more than just the chill in the air.
“I mean, your first kiss.” She paused, watching realization dawn across his face. “You don’t have to obviously, but if you want to do it now, with someone who you trust and who trusts you, then we can.”
She saw him gulp, and the butterflies in her stomach were beginning to flutter. “Riley, you don’t have to do this. I don't want to be a charity case.”
Riley sighed, shaking her head. “Lucas.” She put her hand on his knee. “I want to.”
After an uncertain moment, he nodded, licking his lips nervously.
She nodded too, adjusting herself so that they were facing each other. She had seen countless teen movies where the love interests kiss passionately on the hood of a car, but it clearly was easier said than done. After a sufficient amount of adjusting, she and Lucas were facing each other, their faces only a couple centimeters apart from each other.
“Are you sure about this?” he muttered, his hand coming to rest on her upper arm. His touch was light, hesitant. “You don’t have to. We don’t have to.”
“I’m sure. I want to do this,” she whispered. “Don’t worry about it. It’s just a kiss.”
“Right, right.” His fingers were tapping on her arm. It made her smile in spite of herself. “So is this gonna be a kiss, or a kiss?”
She giggled. “Well, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”
Before he could ask her again if she really wanted to do this, she closed the distance between them, pushing her lips against his.
It was far more than a peck, but their lips stayed pressed against each other for a long moment. Riley wanted to deepen the kiss, but she didn’t want to make him uncomfortable.
When they pulled apart, Riley felt herself smile, her eyes fluttering open. Lucas’s eyes were still closed and Riley felt a weird sense of pride when she watched them flutter open a couple seconds later. Her heart was racing, and she couldn’t seem to wipe the smile off her face.
She had to wonder if he felt the same way.
“So, um,” Lucas started, clearing his throat, his hand still resting on her arm.
“Cold.” It was the only word that Riley could think of for some reason. She was still processing exactly what happened, and her mind was a muddled haze. “The ice cream.” She clarified, tapping the now melted tub with her foot.
“Cold,” Lucas repeated.
“Cold.”
She smiled, pursing her lips together, almost still being able to feel his lips on hers.
It was almost an hour later when she and Lucas were finally at their hotel and getting ready for bed. They had stayed on the hood of her car for another fifteen minutes of so after their kiss, not saying anything, before finally going back into town.
Riley had spent the whole drive staring out the window. Lucas had insisted on driving back, and Riley and graciously let him. She didn’t trust herself behind the wheel of a car, the weird haze of their kiss still surrounding her.
It was unlike anything she had ever felt before. She had never felt that much with Charlie, or Evan, and she and Lucas had hardly kissed. Sure, it was more than a peck, but it still didn’t go beyond their lips touching.
Nearly an hour later and her heart was still beating faster than normal and butterflies didn’t even begin to describe what she was feeling in the pit of her stomach.
“Are you all set in the bathroom?” Lucas asked as Riley was folding her clothes from the day and placing them in her bag.
“Uh, yeah. Go ahead,” she said with a smile, looking up at him briefly before looking down at the sweatshirt he had lent her, which was folding on top of the rest of her clothes. He had never asked for it back, and so far, she had no plans on returning it to him.
Shaking her head, she zipped her backpack up, putting it on the floor next to her bed for the night. Crawling under the covers, she sighed as she threw her head back on the pillow, pulling the blanket up to her chin.
She turned on her side, facing the front door, not actively avoiding Lucas, but maybe not looking at him would help her process everything that had happened a little easier. She could hear him moving around behind her when he emerged from the bathroom.
It wasn’t long before the room was flooded in darkness when he flicked the light off. She smiled when she could hear him adjusting in bed.
“Riley?” he whispered into the darkness, surprising her. She turned slightly in bed so she could see the outline of his figure in the bed next to her. He was on his back, his arm hooked under his head.
“Yeah?”
“Uh, thank you.” She could practically see the blush on his cheeks. It made her smile.
“No problem.” She heard what sounded like a laugh escape from his lips, but it came out breathy and quiet. “Goodnight, Lucas.”
“Goodnight, Riley.”
Sending him one more smile that he wouldn’t be able to see, Riley turned back to her side, sighing as she settled into the comfortable dark silence of the motel room. It’s a comfortable, dark silence, though, and she feels sleep coming for her rather easily.
It’s similar to the previous night, when she and Lucas were sleeping off their alcohol. She once again feels like she’s sleeping off a rather impressive buzz. Only this time, it’s not whiskey that she’s drunk off of.
It’s Lucas.
Riley isn’t usually one to wake up in the middle night. She doesn’t get nightmares that often, at least she hasn’t since high school, so typically once she’s asleep, she’s asleep for the whole night. This night is different however.
When she snaps awake, she expects it to be morning, the sun peaking out over the horizon, but she’s sorely mistaken. The room is still flooded in darkness, and the small digital clock tells her that it’s a little after three. There’s also a weird chill in the room that wasn’t there when they were going to bed.
Riley knows just the solution.
Pushing herself from bed, she pads to the end of it, grabbing her bag from the ground. Unzipping it, she pulls the first garment her hand touches, smiling softly when the black fabric is illuminated in the moonlight.
Pulling the sweatshirt on over her head, she instantly feels more comfortable, sighing as she tugs the sleeves down over her hands. The bottom of the sweatshirt falls below her pajama shorts, giving off the illusion that it’s the only thing that she’s wearing, but she hardly cares. She can already feel sleep coming back to her.
Crawling back into her bed, she slides under the covers, turning on her side once more, only this time, she turns so she’s looking at Lucas. He’s sleeping peacefully, having adjusted in his sleep, so he arms are limp by his side. She smiles.
Despite the fact that his eyes are closed, she remembers exactly what they looked like when she looked into them earlier. This time, when she falls asleep, his green eyes blend in with the stars in the night sky to create the most beautiful masterpiece she’s ever seen.
The last thought she has before submitting completely to her subconscious is how much she’s anticipating waking up once more.

✨Whumptober Day 3✨
Main Prompt: Hari’s Breadth From Death
Sub Prompts: Say Goodbye, Impaled
The volcano's sweltering heat warped the air around them until it spun in hazy spirals, performing a dizzying dance before Spada's tearful eyes. Frustrating as it was to construct a stretcher with his vision obscured, he was almost grateful for it now as it stood like a barrier between himself and the horror that lay there before him.
Red. All red. Mockingly, disgustingly red.
Just how much had he lost? From the brief glimpses he could manage, it would seem damn near all of it. Blood had splashed and slicked over Ruca's well-ironed clothing, gushing forth from his torn flesh, pooling in crevices, and seeping into the jackets and capes that made up his shoddy stretcher like spilled ink upon a canvas.

Car Wash
Tumblr media
Pairings: Riley Matthews x Lucas Friar
Summary: Post-Car Wash.
Tumblr media
Lucas, Riley and Farkle were drenched after Maya soaked them with the hose as Riley had done to Lucas and how he retaliated.
The three stood against the car, with Maya having now turned the hose off. "You amateurs!" She laughed, as Farkle shook his head like a dog, and Riley started ringing her hair out.
"Farkle, you're not a dog!" Riley complains, grabbing her second-oldest friend by his head to stop him. Lucas smiles at Riley, who has stopped ringing her hair out, and now start on the top and jacket she wears.
The class start to head back indoors, which is when Lucas notices that Zay must have gone in long before. He feels a sting of pain in his heart, knowing that he's done that to one of his oldest friends.
The four walk back inside, Riley stopping to take her shoes off. "I am not walking any further, with my shoes squelching," Riley pulls a face, as Farkle walks away from the three.
"Riley, I just want to tell you how sorry I am," Lucas says, gently holding her wrist, the one that doesn't have her shoes hanging from it. The light makeup she was wearing is now starting to run, and bits of water drip from her nose and hair, but Lucas still finds her as cute as a button.
"I deserved it, after what I did to you," Riley smiles, slipping her wrist through Lucas's grip, so that's she's holding his hand. "I'm sorry for that, by the way,"
The pair smiled at each other, before noticing that Farkle has gone 'walkies' as Maya puts it. Only for a loud scream/screech to be held, as Farkle had gone and put himself in Maya's bad books.
Farkle dumps the blue bucket that Riley had dumped over Lucas's head, and hides behind the pair.
"What did you do?" Riley asks, looking over her shoulder at Stuart Minkus' son.
Maya Hart comes storming over, drenched in water, and has also looked like she should have cartoon smoke coming out of her ears.
"You're on your own buddy," Riley states, shuffling around Farkle to Lucas's other side. The Texan smiles softly at her and watches as Maya attacks.
"Friends stick together!" Farkle shouts as he gets sprayed by water yet again.
"You dumped the bucket on Maya!" Riley replies, grabbing Lucas's arm, hiding behind his arm. "We've been on her bad side before, I ain't doing it again!" Riley exclaims, pushing her head into his arm.
Tumblr media
The four walked back into school, shoes squelching and drips of water dropping off them. Which is when Riley remembered her extra clothes in her gym locker, and she smiled. She backtracked and started walking towards the locker room.
"Honey? Where ya going?" Maya asked, reaching down and takes her shoes off as well.
"Locker room, spare clothes," Riley shook her head, water droplets splattering around her.
Maya smiled and started following her best friend. Lucas knew that he would have to explain what he did in Texas that saw him leaving his home state and moving to New York City - but he's actually thankful for 'Texas Lucas' as he never would have met Riley.

Is This Seat Taken? Ch. 12
This is not a completely fluffy fic, I’m going to be diving into some deep shit so if that’s not your cup of tea please leave *this does  include some serious depression if it goes beyond that I will trigger warn it*
A/N: I’m going to be honest, I kind of forgot about this story for a bit. I was looking into grad school (I just applied) and generally trying not to die and life just took over. And when I did think of it, my angst took over and I didn't like the way it was headed so I waited. And here we are.  Words: 1194 Previous: Ch. 1 Ch. 2 Ch. 3 Ch.4 Ch. 5 Ch. 6 Ch. 7 Ch. 8 Ch. 9 Ch. 10 Ch.11
It had been a week since Riley’s incident in the hospital, and everyone had hoped that things would be back to normal but they weren’t.  Riley was still a little sick and overall weak from the experience. Riley also just seemed overall upset, and her friends felt that she wasn’t telling them what was going on. It was a particular issue between her and Lucas recently.
Riley was working on her homework in her room and she cringed thinking of the argument her and Lucas had a few hours earlier.
“Riley I can tell something is bothering you, just tell me what it is so I can help”
“Lucas, I told you there’s nothing. I’m just upset, okay?” Lucas gave her a look,
“I know there’s more to it than that Riley”
“Well then you must know my inner thoughts better than I do! Can’t just accept that if there was something wrong I’d tell you?” Riley huffed
“Not after last time I can’t” As soon as the words left his mouth Lucas knew he fucked up, tears were streaming down Riley’s face. He knew she felt bad about the incident and was trying to work on it. “-Riley I didn’t mean-“
Riley dried her face, “I think its best if you leave Lucas.”
“Riley-“ But she had already turned around and was paying no attention to him and he knew it.
Riley just felt upset at the whole situation, and she tried to remember what her and Joanne had talked about. Sometimes you feel more the one thing, its good to take a moment and write about it or think about what you’re feeling and what’s causing it.
Riley sighed, sometimes she really hated dealing with herself, but she pulled out her journal and her favorite purple pen and got to writing
--
Lucas felt like a moron, he just wanted to love and support her but he royally messed up. He knew Riley was working on her emotions and being more open, it didn’t happen over night. He groaned again, he felt like such an ass. He had to think of a way to make it up to her. He grabbed his keys and told his parents he’d be back soon.
--
The next day at school Riley was not looking great or feeling great, she hadn’t been able to fall asleep last night and spent a lot of the time crying. Her eyes were puffy and her face was blotchy despite her best efforts with make-up. She was getting stuff out of her locker when she felt a tap on the shoulder, she was hoping it was Lucas but when she turned she was faced with none other than Charlie Gardner.
“Oh hi Charlie” Riley tried to smile but she could tell it didn’t reach her eyes
“Hi Riley!” Charlie’s smile did reach his eyes, it was no secret that Charlie had a crush on Riley since forever, and Riley was always kind enough to him but she never returned his affection. That didn’t stop him from trying though, “I just wanted to see if you need anything? I didn’t see Lucas” Charlie said her boyfriends name with such maliace that Riley frowned at him.
“Oh he texted me he was running a few minuets late, see there he is now” They both turned and Riley smiled at him. But Lucas frowned back seeing Charlie with Riley it looked like Charlie was trying to put his arm around Riley but she was too focused on Lucas to notice.
“I’ll see you later Charlie!” Riley said quickly as she skipped over to her beau and gave him a big hug that he quickly returned
“I’m so sorry about last night, really there’s nothing going wrong. I’m just still upset about last week. And I don’t want you to think that I’m not sharing with you”
“Oh Riley, I know. I’m sorry I snapped I’m just worried about you. And I know you’re not always going to tell me what’s going on but I got you something that you can tell things to when you don’t want to tell me, if you want it.” Riley’s eyes got big and she bit her lip, she never wanted to seem spoiled but it made a certain part of her all warm when people thought about her enough to get her something. From Lucas’ backpack he pulled out a stuffed purple bunny, with flower pattering in it’s floppy ears and on the pads of its feet.
Riley had to hold back tears, “It’s made by Jellycat so its extra soft, and I know you wanted to be a bunny farmer for a while and well”
“Oh Lucas!” Riley cried, taking it from his hands, “I love it, she’s going to be my special friend. I think I’ll call her Rosie!” Riley smiled up at him “If that’s okay with you?”
Lucas chuckled, “You don’t need my permission to name your bunny”
Riley nodded blushing, “I know but I want you to like it too because Rosie is going to be around for a long while. “
Lucas chuckled and Riley stood on her tip toes angling her head up, Lucas smirked and leaned down to kiss her knowing its what she wanted
--
The rest of the day went smoothly, Lucas saw Riley a few times stroking Rosie from her back pack when she thought no one was looking. And it made his heart warm that she liked his gift. Missy tried to get his attention a few times during the day but he only had eyes for Riley.
On the other hand , Lucas started to notice just how many classes they had with Charlie Gardner and he was not a fan. Charlie kept trying to get Riley’s attention all day but she either didn’t notice or didn’t want to encourage him.
When they sat down for lunch Riley was bouncing up and down dying to show everyone her bunny.
“Look what Lucas got me!” Riley showed everyone before crashing it into her chest, sure people were looking on but most everyone was smiling at seeing Riley and Lucas so happy.
“Well that’s adorable Sugar” Zay said, “Hey Lucas why didn’t you get me a bunny? I thought we had something man” Riley just giggled and snuggled her bunny.
Maya interrupted her snuggling with her bunny, and Riley leaned into Lucas “What’s up with Gardner. He’s been looking over here more than normal, same with Missy.”
“I don’t like that Gardner fellow” Lucas grumbled and Riley shrugged
“He kind of gives me the creeps but he’s never done anything wrong. So I don’t know.”
Josh nodded, “Same I always got a weird feeling too.”
Zay shrugged, “I always thought he was cute, but I get it.”
Riley shrugged, “As long as he doesn’t turn into another Missy it’ll be fine. And also if any of you mess with Rosie you die.”
The gang chuckled, but something about the look Charlie had made Lucas tighten his hold on Riley just a bit. But she was too enamored with her rabbit and snuggling into him to notice.

chapter three; riley
For most girls, coming home to your mother posing by the stairwell in a wedding dress as your father and her best friend are adjusting the fabric beneath her isn't typically, well, normal. However, it's the norm on my end.
"Hi honey," Topanga greets as I come into the front door. "What do you think of the dress?" She asks, dramatically leaning against the banister, allowing her ombre curls to cascade over her face. The dress is pretty simple compared to all the other ones that she has tried on for her previous clients. This dress is made up of white satin and it's off the shoulder too. It also has little laced flowers at the bottom, which I thought was pretty cute. I genuinely think it's beautiful, but I'm still shaken up that I just nod silently.
A satisfied smile creeps upon her face. "Good. Well, it's Rachel's."
"Oh, she's here?"
"She's at my place, Babygirl," Angela speaks. "Her, Aubrey, and Lucas should be settling in."
"Who's Aubrey and Lucas?" I ask.
"Aubrey's her niece and Lucas is the nephew." Topanga answers.
Dad jerks up and points a finger at me. "You are to stay away from Lucas, ya hear me?!"
Angela rolls her eyes. "Cut it out, Cor. Your father is joking. You should meet them." She then turns to my dad. "Both of them."
"Sure. I really don't mind. I'll meet them when I get the chance." I shrug. "But for now, I'll head up to my room."
They all nod at me before I quickly start climbing up the flight of stairs. Our house only has three rooms, which makes two reserved for my parents and my not-so-little brother, Auggie. The last room would be the office that my parents have always wanted. This leaves me the attic. Although, I'm really not complaining or anything. As a matter of fact, with the help of Farkle, I was able to decorate my relatively large area just the way I want it. Only cons would be that I have to climb an extra flight of stairs and I don't have a door. My room's basically a loft, but I love it.
Just as I was about to head into my room, I decided to make a slight detour to Auggie's. I poke my head into the slightly closed door to find him locking lips with his girlfriend of apparently seven years, Ava. I roll my eyes at the sight. Just as I was about to shut the door, giving them privacy, he pulls away from her and turns to me. "You perv." He sneers.
"Hi, Riley," Ava says, embarrassed.
I smile at her. "Hey."
"Can you just leave us be?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. Oh, whatever happened to my sweet little boy? He's all grown up now.
"My dear brother, if you would like some privacy, I think you should really use this to your advantage." I sway the door back and forth.
"Whatever." He offers me a smirk.
"Just keep this shut and don't do anything you'll regret!" I exclaim, walking away.
Once I've reached my room, I plop onto my bed. I lied there for a few moments, just pondering about everything that has happened today. I've embarrassed myself once again and now Charlie's mad at me. I groan and the thought. I sit up, glancing at my phone beside me. I impulsively click on Farkle's contact and shoot him a text.
Hey, where are you right now?
Lucky for me, Farkle's pretty quick when it comes to responding to my messages.
Sparkly Farkly: I'm home. Why?
Are you busy? Can you come over? I kind of need you.
Sparkly Farkly: Give me 2 minutes. I'll be there.
I graciously sighed in relief. Having your best friend be your next door neighbor can be more convenient than you think. I look up at my mirror, which sits on top of my dresser. I sigh as I stare at my reflection. Ugh. I pretty much sigh every time I see myself in the mirror. Look at the mirror-- sigh. Look at the mirror-- sigh. It has become an impressive reflex throughout the years, honestly. Today, I sigh at my brown curls. How can Charlie still look adoringly handsome when the sea breeze messes up his hair? And when that happens to me, why do I look like I've just rolled out of bed? I pick up my brush and comb through my curls. Moments later, I hear a soft knock on my door. "Come in," I say.
Farkle opens the door and I smile at him. Well, I smile at him to the point where tears start to slightly form in my eyes. "Not again," He whispers before pulling me into his arms. I sob uncontrollably into his shirt, which I used to feel really bad doing, especially since I wear mascara on a day to day basis. Even on my worst days, but it's not like I know when I'm going to have one anyways. Today, I fortunately do not have any makeup on.
"What happened?" He asks me.
I pull away, wiping my tears. "I had a panic attack, Farkle."
He tenses up. "Is it because of Charlie? What did he do?"
I sob as I explain what had happened, hoping that he could even understand what I was even saying. Moments like these, I feel like I tend to overreact on the littlest of things. Farkle says it's fine and that I should just let everything out, instead of bottling anything in, regardless if it's anything major or not. He's truly a good friend for willing to hear me out and staying patient with me.
"I just don't understand why I fall into these things. I understand what I'm getting myself into, but it's like I just ignore the consequences." I rant, finally cooling down.
"It's okay, Riley. It happens," He responds. "You just need to remember that there are certain things that are out of your control and you can't dwell on that."
"Have you met me, though?" We both laugh. It's true. I seem to always be filled with so much regret.
"The best thing that you can do is move on. As a matter of fact, we can do that right now!" Farkle retrieves his backpack that I hardly even noticed he brought. "Movie night?"
I let out a sigh and smile at him. Move on. I think to myself. "Depends... What movie?"
"I was thinking Funny Face." He suggests.
"Of course! How can I say no to an Audrey Hepburn film?" I exclaim. "I'll get the ice cream."
Moments later, we're snuggled up in my blanket on the floor. Farkle's laptop is placed right in front of us as we watch the movie and simultaneously stuff our faces with chocolate ice cream. This pretty much sums up my ideal perfect night.
Funny Face clearly is one of my favorite movies of all time. We beam over how dreamy Paris is, how Audrey's costumes look breathtaking in the film, and Farkle and I even got to dance along to the musical sequences that would come up. It was all laughter and fun for a bit, but as the night came along, it all had to be put to an end. Once the movie ended, Farkle gets a call from his mom telling him that it was time to go home.
"I gotta go." He mumbles.
I frowned. "Aw, can't stay longer?"
"I wish I could," Farkle hangs his head down. "I'd rather be here than at home anyways." I pull him into an embrace. Lately, there's been this odd shift going on between his parents' relationship, thus affecting Farkle. Constant fighting would occur almost every single day and he unfortunately has to always witness. At times, he would sneak out to our place and stay for a bit. There was this one time that he actually stayed a whole week! Things must be pretty heated between the two if they weren't able to notice that their son was gone for that long.
"It'll be okay," I whisper as we both pull away. "Maybe I can see you tomorrow. You can help out with the wedding."
"Can't. My dad's taking me to Stanford tomorrow."
"Oh, wow! That's like your dream school!"
"Yeah, he's been planning a campus tour for months." He shrugs like it was no big deal at all. Me being the best friend, I can tell that he's secretly very excited.
"I hope you have fun."
"Thanks. Well, I better get going." He offers me one last squeeze before heading out. I honestly would've sent him out, but I was way too beat. I decided to call it a day and fall right into bed hoping that tomorrow will do me good.

The next day, I woke up bright and early just as my mother told me to do so. I quickly got ready by doing my usual morning routine: Brush my teeth, shower, get dressed, and curl my hair. Today, I decided to throw on a rose-patterned sundress along with my favorite white cardigan that my mom had given me. It's kind of like a protection shield if you ask me. When I'm in trouble and I have this on, it's like Topanga's there with me, which obviously makes me feel safe.
I slip on a pair of brown sandals before grabbing my camera, thinking that they might want some photos of the whole set up process. I sling the leash over my shoulder and climbed down the stairs. As I was heading down, I was instantly greeted by the smell of my mother's famous Blueberry Surprise Breakfast, a personal favorite. Topanga would either prepare blueberry flavored pancakes, waffles, or bagels. Today, it was the waffles.
"Good morning, honey! Thank you so much for waking up early. Your father and Auggie are still sound asleep, so we'll probably meet them at the venue later in the day," She explains, stuffing a waffle inside a ziplock bag and handing it to me. "Meanwhile, you and I need to head over there right now. So, eat this on the drive."
I take the bag and nod. "Alrighty."
We both then head straight for the door. "Nice cardigan, by the way." She jokes.
"Yeah, the person who gave it to me truly has a great sense of style." I giggle.

On the way, Topanga pretty much explains everything I need to know: The wedding ceremony will take place down by the beach. Right afterwards, everyone will walk over to this grand hotel, which luckily is walking distance from where they're at. There, the reception will take place. I can already tell that most of Angela and Topanga's magic will be manifested into this part of the evening.
Once we arrived, we were immediately greeted at the sight of Angela scurrying around. Spotting us, she waves. "Oh good, you're here!"
"Indeed I am!" Topanga beams.
Angela then grabs both of our arms and drag us into the wedding suite. "I know we only started yesterday, but I feel like all of it's already coming together! I can't wait for you two to see it." When we step inside, I hear myself gasped louder than ever before.
"Wow, it's amazing."
Tables and chairs were already set up where they're supposed to be, just awaiting its silk fabrics that they need to be covered in and the centerpieces, which I hopefully get to be in charge of. Fairy lights were also hung up everywhere, which makes the place look incredibly magical. Even though there is still so much that needs to be done, the place already looks pretty nice. I can best assure that once the extra decor is set into its place, everything would turn out phenomenal.
Suddenly, a tall red-headed lady approaches us with a smile. "Topanga!" She exclaims, giving my mother a hug. "I am so glad that you're here!"
"As am I! I can't believe this all finally happening," She says, looking around the room in amazement just as I did. She then turns to me. "Oh, Riley, this is Rachel. You probably don't remember her but  trust me, she definitely was a big part of your childhood." Topanga chuckles. And so I've heard. Both my parents have told me about how Rachel would take care of me as a baby. From hearing all the stories, I thought she was pretty darn cool.
"Hi," I greet as politely as I possibly can.
Rachel cups her hands over her mouth. "Oh my gosh, Angela was right! You're growing up such a beautiful little lady, I hardly even recognized you." She instantly pulls me into a bear hug and rocks me back and forth.
"Alright, so my itinerary says that we have a meeting with catering soon." Topanga interrupts, bringing us back on track.
"Correct. The head chef is waiting for us in the kitchen." Rachel says.
"Yes, and we need to start testing out audio/visual, so Riley, if you could head on over to the storage room and fetch a couple microphones that'd be fantastic." Angela requests.
"Oh, sure. But where exactly is-"
"Thank you, sweetie!" She exclaims before the three of them head towards the kitchen. Well, alrighty then. I think to myself. Guess I need to find the storage room myself.
Before I do so, though, I take a few photographs here and there.  I then scan the room in search for the storage room, but failed to spot it. It must be outside then.
I exit the wedding suite and make my way down the hotel's hallway, hoping to find an employee that could help me out.
As I was walking, I suddenly hear a soft melody playing from one of the rooms. Intrigued, I decided to investigate. I let myself into what seemed to be an awfully dark room. I could still see, but just barely. Barely enough to realize that I am currently inside a theater. Foldable chairs were placed all over the room and right up ahead was a small stage. I figured that one hit wonders or old artists would perform here.
The sound was coming from the far end of the stage. I walk ever so quietly so whoever it may be won't see me. The closer I got to the stage, the louder the sound becomes. Next thing you know, I hear a voice. A guy's voice. He was humming along to the tune that he was playing, which was very, very beautiful. I then see him. A boy, who looked around my age, was sitting crossed-legged on the very back corner of the stage. He was surrounded by a ton of music equipment, so I couldn't really get a good look at his face. However, I could still see him delicately plucking the strings of his guitar whilst slightly swaying back and forth. I was wonderstruck at the sight.  Everything about the guy seemed so intriguing and mysterious, yet familiar. I scratch my head at the thought.
Why does he look familiar?
I pulled out my camera and zoomed in, thinking that I could probably get a good look at him this way. For a split second, I saw him. But to my horror, I accidentally press the shutter-release button and the sound my camera makes stops him from playing. Shit.
He turns around and looks off into the room. "Hello? Who's there?"
Maybe if I slowly tip-toed towards the door, he won't notice. But I could never. The door was too far away, and besides, he'd probably see me leave. I take a deep breath before revealing myself. I slowly merge from the darkness, and wait- I remember him! He was the guy I ran into at the beach yesterday.
His emerald green eyes, ones that have looked into mine before, widened at the sight of me. He remembers me.
"Who let you in? And why were you taking photos of me?" He asks in a slightly stern tone.
"I-I'm so sorry. Uh- I really didn't mean to. I-I-" I stutter anxiously. I take a second to stop myself from committing another act of embarrassment. "Look. I'm taking photos for the wedding that's happening here," I partially lie. I technically am taking the photos, but I'm more so on my quest to find the storage room. "How did you get in, I should ask. Are you the wedding singer?"
The boy raises an eyebrow. "Am I the wedding singer?"
"Yeah, are you practicing?" I start to slowly move towards him. "Because if so, I wouldn't do that song if I were you."
"And why not?"
"Because," I say looking right up at him. God, his eyes are so mesmerizing. "Because it sounds so sad."
He doesn't speak. Instead, he stares at me as if I was an alien from another planet. I begin to endure this familiar sinking feeling that I've become very much familiar with, especially from Charlie. I realize that I should probably leave before I start becoming even more anxious than I already am. "Well, it was nice meeting you. Good luck at the wedding." I say with burning cheeks and I turn to go.
