New Release Review: The Dead Don't Die
Tumblr media
The Dead Don't Die's marketing campaign may lead you to believe that it's the next laugh-a-minute zombie comedy in the vein of Zombieland, but anyone familiar with writer-director Jim Jarmusch's idiosyncratic oeuvre (Only Lovers Left Alive, Broken Flowers, Stranger Than Paradise, et al.) ought to know better. Rather than broad comedy, The Dead Don't Die's offbeat sense of humor ranges from deadpan to metatextual to callbacks to absurdism.
Centerville, a quaint slice of Americana with a population of 738, proudly embodies its slogan: "A Real Nice Place." The biggest disturbance police chief Cliff Robertson (Bill Murray, Ghostbusters) and officer Ronnie Peterson (Adam Driver, Star Wars) usually have to deal with is Hermit Bob (musician Tom Waits), an unruly but harmless homeless man who may occasionally steal livestock from the local, bigoted farmer (Steve Buscemi, Reservoir Dogs). That is until mankind’s unrelenting polar fracking throws the Earth of its axis, causing the dead to come back to life.
Tumblr media
Not unlike Shaun of the Dead, all of the signs of an impending zombie outbreak are in plain sight, but the news reports and the altered sun cycle are largely ignored by the characters. Only Peterson has the sense to predict that "this is all gonna end badly." Like clockwork, the dead soon rise from their graves... beginning with the Godfather of Punk, Iggy Pop. The zombies look great, on par with The Walking Dead, and there are plenty of them in the third act - including several of the "name" actors behind the makeup. Rather than bleed, however, black dust spills from their wounds.
Drawing influence from the genre-defining zombie cinema of George A. Romero (who is name-checked in the movie), The Dead Don't Die offers underlying social and political commentary. In this case, Jarmusch not-so-subtly comments on environmentalism as well as consumerism. The living dead are of the slow-moving variety, but they can murmur a word or two. Similar to the concept behind Romero's Dawn of the Dead, they shamble toward material things from when they were alive, like coffee, wine, or wifi.
Tumblr media
The cast of familiar faces also includes Tilda Swinton (Suspiria) as a samurai-practicing, Scottish mortician; Chloë Sevigny (American Psycho) as a police officer; Caleb Landry Jones (Get Out) as a gas station proprietor who serves as the resident horror expert; Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon) as a hardware store owner; Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers) as a big-city hipster; rapper RZA as a Wu-PS - get it? - deliveryman; Carol Kane (Addams Family Values) as the town drunk; Larry Fessenden (Session 9) as a motel owner; Rosal Colon (Orange Is the New Black) as a cleaning lady; and Rosie Perez (White Men Can't Jump) as a newscaster.
Murray is the king of deadpan humor, utilizing his skills throughout the film. Driver holds his own as the second in command, growing from nervous to controlled when the situation calls for it. But it's Tilda Swinton (Suspiria) who steals the show with an unorthodox role that was clearly written for her. While much of the film is cold, Sevigny embodies the heart of the movie. It's a pleasure to see Fessenden chew the scenery with the big names. Despite the plethora of ancillary characters, nearly all of them are developed to some extent, even if their character arc is minimal (namely Gomez). With the exception of the zombified Pop, none of them come off like mere cameos.
Tumblr media
The Dead Don't Die continues Jarmusch's penchant for a minimalist yet heightened style. Working within budgetary and time constraints, he and director of photography Frederick Elmes (Blue Velvet, Hulk) opted to shoot the night scenes day-for-night, which adds to the unique look. The score, composed by Sqürl (Jarmusch and producer Carter Logan) - begins with a country twang but turns to synthesizer once the zombies rise. The film also features an oft-heard (and oft-referenced) titular theme song by Grammy-winning country crooner Sturgill Simpson.
The Dead Don't Die is occasionally reminiscent of one of those weird Saturday Night Live sketches that plays toward the end of the show when the delirious audience can't help but admire its eccentricities. The powerhouse cast embraces the unique tone and pacing without missing a beat. The flamboyantly quirky brand of comedy will put off some viewers, and it doesn't always land, but the zombie film feels tailor-made for a cult audience. It's likely to go down as one of Jarmusch's most accessible efforts.

Detroit, MI Indian Wedding by Rosy and Shaun Photography
Maharani Reema’s Indian wedding planned and designed by Blissful Weddings and Events fully embodied elegance and class. For her reception party back at the Masonic Temple the bride donned a blue and gold lengha with a modern twist. I am in love with the off the shoulder blouse that blends a sultry look with that of classic Bollywood. Red garden roses added a lively embellishment to the spacious quarters. Fresh roses on each table added that perfect romantic and whimsical touch. Scrumptious Indian cuisine was dished out to guests by Rangoli. After dinner, family and friends hit the dance floor lit by Naveen Productions who played the top hits and kept guests dancing the night away. Captured by the lens of Rosy and Shaun Photography are all the glamorous pics you can find in the gallery. http://dlvr.it/PKnyKs
