Hibiscus syriacus (rose of Sharon)

The rose of Sharon is a name applied to possibly seven different species but this is what Hibiscus syriacus is called in North America. This plant entered European horticulture in the 16th century after being found in a garden in Syria. In truth, this plant is native to the Korean peninsula and was certainly being cultivated in Japan by the 8th century. Worth noting: this species of Hibiscus is the national flower of South Korea.

These are the three most common colors I see in my neighborhood; white, mauve and pink. Individual flowers last but a single day but this shrub blooms so prolifically from July to September, that it's branches bend with their weight. As a garden ornamental the rose of Sharon can grow 4 m tall (13 ft) and that's why I don't have one growing in my garden. I think other suburban gardeners will understand. There are so many beautiful flowers but, unfortunately, not enough space for them all.

Good Morning tumblrs -

Here is a shot of my Rose of Sharon plant waking up in the morning sun. The sunrise pic today would have looked the same as yesterday, so I decided to go with something different.

Today is Labor Day here in the U.S. so it is an official holiday here. I did my barbecued ribs yesterday, so today is a day for resting and goofing off. 😃

Here is another shot from this morning of a couple flowers that are more open.

The weather has turned a bit colder since yesterday. Autumn is approaching and I have seen two trees in this area that have already started changing color.
