Brodar is influenced by the playful works of Japanese art, as well as the works of artists like Rose Wylie and the simplistic yet expressive characters of artists like Philip Guston. She loves improvisational theatre, and the way she paints is similar; spontaneously from a thought rather than pre-sketching.

This allows the viewer to see hints of her process through exposed pencil marks, paint drips, and deliberate unpainted areas. Fanny starts her paintings by working flat on the floor, layering paint, and then drawing and doodling directly on the canvas turning it upright on stretcher bars or the wall. This also allows her to use her whole body when making the initial gestures.

She was born in 1971 in Oslo, Norway, grew up in New York, and currently lives and works in Maine.  (Text by Carver Hill Gallery)

Waar?   Tentoonstelling Rose Wylie in het SMAK, Gent

In het SMAK, Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, is een tentoonstelling te zien van Rose Wylie. Wylie vindt haar inspiratie in de mythologie, kunstgeschiedenis, volkskunst, literatuur, cinema, sport- en celebritycultuur. Ze vermengt de beelden die ze hieraan ontleent met observaties uit haar onmiddellijke omgeving en haar jeugd. Haar beeldtaal doet denken aan cartoons of strips. In haar werk gebruikt ze middelen als schaalvergroting, perspectivische vertekening en gefragmenteerde weergave.

Ik zou graag wat dieper ingaan op de werken die ik heb gezien, maar helaas werd ik daarvoor teveel afgeleid. In alle zalen waren luidruchtige groepen aanwezig die blijkbaar bezig waren met een vorm van teambuilding, persoonlijke ontwikkeling of wat dies meer zij. Ik hoorde een van de trainers de deelnemers opdragen zich in te denken dat ze in het schilderij zaten. Nu gun ik iedereen elke zweverige workshop waar ze maar zin in hebben, maar die tolerantie houdt op als horen en zien mij vergaat (de audiotour was vrijwel onverstaanbaar) en de zich in het schilderij verplaatsende lieden zich groepsgewijs pontificaal voor de werken posteren, zodat gewone bezoekers deze nauwelijks kunnen bekijken.

Kortom: ik had het in dit museum bijzonder snel (niet) gezien. Binnen een half uur stond ik weer gefrustreerd buiten.
