The problem with Layton’s character in the anime
I don’t think the problem with the LMJ anime is that is portrays Layton as a less-than-perfect parent/guardian…
PL3 already showed that when he ditched Flora in his office after he promised not to leave her. Okay, there’s no confirmation Layton adopted Flora or that she’s even a child, but she’s still a young person in Layton’s care— someone who he knows hates being left alone— but he still left her behind for his investigation.
Layton leaving a child, even one he definitely adopted, behind while he investigates a case isn’t necessarily problem. It isn’t necessarily out of character.
With knowledge from previous games in the series, I can headcanon reasons for Layton’s behaviour. E.g., Flora might remind Layton of Aurora, who he couldn’t save. Layton chased after Descole and brought Aurora back to the sanctuary, putting her life in danger. So, he insists on leaving Flora behind now.
During Azran Legacy, Layton had a very nasty shock when he learned that, not only was he adopted, but the enemy he had been fighting for three years was in fact his long lost brother, who had been trying to beat their long lost FATHER— the head of an archaeology cult— to the Azran Legacy.
So if Layton wanted to confirm whether the birth father of the baby he’d adopted was alive? And whether that baby might be linked to an ancient civilisation? I wouldn’t blame Layton at all—
But that’s me trying to make excuses for Layton as a character. That’s me trying to make excuses for the nonsensical writing of the anime.
The anime doesn’t reference Azran Legacy. It doesn’t reference any game or character previously seen in the series— outside of Layton and Luke and Rosa I’m glad you’re here Rosa but where are Grandma and Grandpa Layton— because it doesn’t want to spoil newcomers to the series.
And that’s fine! It’s fine if LMJ wants to be a standalone anime about Layton’s daughter solving daily mysteries and eating sweets and buying clothes! Even the plot point about Layton going missing is fine it could be intriguing!
But for such a superficial premise… why does Layton’s disappearance need to be so complicated?  Maybe Level 5 wanted to involve archaeology somehow so they just copy-pasted the Azran-looking stones and technology?
But why have Rosa and Luke question Layton’s reasons for leaving Kat behind? Why bring up Kat’s birth father only to never mention him again?
Why wasn’t Rufus Aldebaran Kat’s birth father? Say, if he imprisoned Layton because Layton refused to give up Kat’s location, then at least that would make Layton somewhat justified! (Not for leaving his kids behind, but the fact that Kat’s unknown birth father was indeed a threat.)
Why not just have Layton kidnapped off the street, rather than having him go on an investigation and keep investigating when he knew things were getting dangerous? Why bring up the point of Layton being a questionable parent, only to never unpack it?
Kat gets a nice hug with Layton when they reunite. (That scene actually does make me emotional!) But Kat forgives her dad immediately and the next thing you know, they’re taking down the villain together. And then the credits and the happy music roll.
Maybe a moment of anger from Kat towards her dad was too much to ask from the anime…
But it’s not just the anime. In PL3, Layton leaving Flora behind is brushed off as a joke. (Outside of Chelmey calling Layton out one time…) We get their hug when Flora is rescued from the Mobile Fortress, but it’s not mentioned after that. Flora doesn’t get to say goodbye to Luke with Layton. Flora isn’t present in that last scene with Layton in his office.
Maybe Level 5 were worried about showing Layton as a bad parent— as a ‘bad’ character, even. But… compared to some of the other parents in the series? (Hi, Baron Reinhold, Bronev and Arthur!) Layton really isn’t that bad, even with the anime in mind! It’s okay if he’s not a perfect parent or gentleman 100% of the time! But if Level 5 wanted to give Layton these…conflicted moments as a character, then it would be better if they could actually unpacked them. Give him the angst, Level 5.

Thank you, @proflaytonbigbang !! This event has been amazing, challenging, an absolute blast. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the series we love together and the new game!
This has been the most absurd and ambitious project I’ve written, and it feels somehow surreal that it’s time to share it. I had so much support and encouragement from my talented art partners, and had a great time discussing the series together! You won’t want to miss out on their work; @whomstved-yallaintve created an adorable piece for the Rabbit Show story (as well as giving Buddy the bunny his name), and three stories received beautiful illustrations from Alex/strigascar! (Here’s her twitter/X: https://twitter.com/strigascars ) It’s been lovely to make new friends! ☺️

It seems so long ago that I started replaying Miitopia completely starring Professor Layton characters.
It took a while, but I finally created enough miis to populate Greenhorne.
Firstly, I decided that the Carefree Guide should be Mr Anderson. After all, he was happy to show Layton and co. around Dropstone.
Tumblr media
Next, the Cheery Granny is Rosa Grimes. I based her more off how she appears in the anime than the games, as she is a grandmother figure to Katrielle there.
Tumblr media
I thought about it a lot and eventually decided that the Cheeky Child and Worried Mother should be Button and Amanita. They aren't mother and daughter in the games, but I think it works.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next the Lovey-Dovey Couple are Benjy and Bess. No explanation needed, if you've played Mystery Journey, you know what they are like. I'm not 100% happy with how they turned out but it's the best I can do.
Tumblr media
I thought Dimitri Allen would be a good fit for the Sarky Bloke. He's had a hard life so he's allowed to have a bit of an attitude.
Tumblr media
The Dubious Mayor is Bill Hawks. A political figure that is corrupt and doesn't care about his citizens? A perfect match! Making a mii of him was a terrible experience.
Tumblr media
As for The Dark Lord, there are a few characters I could have picked, but the purple horns reminded me of the Great Witch from Professor Layton V.S Phoenix Wright. So I went with her. I simplified her design a lot, but I think it looks ok.
Tumblr media
And just like that, I'm ready to start my adventure!!
Hershel Layton the Cleric is ready for Battle!
Tumblr media
Is that the bisexual flag?
Anyway, my Access Key is 4N95JJC so feel free to take any of the miis I created and use them in your own game!!!

While it is hilarious imagining Layton’s students groaning/celebrating when they find out their puzzle-obsessed archaeology tutor has cancelled class AGAIN, do you think his students ever worry about him?
When 27-year-old Layton starts teaching his first ever class (a delayed start to the term), do his new students wonder why he never removes his hat? Do they notice the bruises on his skin or the dark shadows under his eyes? Do they hear the rumours about how Layton just got out of hospital or how he spends his nights working in his office? (What exactly is he researching?) Any students caught gossiping face the wrath of Rosa Grimes, so the rumours eventually fade away.
Sure, Layton was late starting the year, but he’s a dedicated teacher and a true gentleman, so the students and Dean Delmona let it slide. Some of his colleagues view him as a ‘young upstart’— Why on Earth is an archaeology professor assisting the police?— but he is mostly well-liked at Gressenheller.
Professor Layton is patient and sympathetic to students struggling with their work (students like Janice), while at the same time being a driving inspiration (to students like Carmine). He wants his students to succeed, even if their interests lie outside of archaeology.
Seven years into Layton’s teaching career— he suddenly doesn’t turn up to class one day. Layton’s students wait in the empty lecture hall— wait for him to hurry in with a hasty apology— but there’s no sign of Professor Layton. Hershel Layton, who has never taken a sick day in his whole career.
Panicked, several students dash to Layton’s office. (“Maybe he fell asleep on his sofa again…?”) But when they see he isn’t there, they storm into Dean Delmona’s office, who explains that Layton rushed off after receiving an urgent letter— and not to worry, because he has his new assistant to help him. Layton’s students are extremel  relieved, but at the same time, curious about what the letter could contain.
When a weary Layton finally returns to Gressenheller after a few days, he is met with concern and endless questions. He confesses that he was involved in solving a mystery, though he won’t reveal the details of said-mystery. He apologises for leaving his class on such short notice and promises he will hold extra sessions for them to catch up.
Of course Layton’s students forgive him. Even true gentlemen need to deal with emergencies from time to time! This was just a one-off, right…?
Right?
Three years later (several adventures and sudden absences later), nothing surprises Layton’s students anymore. Thankfully, the Professor has gotten better at informing Dean Delmona when he will be away. Whenever Layton’s students see the substitute Dr Glaive in their classroom, they assume Layton is off on another adventure. Still, Layton always reviews the notes Dr Glaive leaves for him. He will check in with his students and arrange extra study sessions if they’re struggling—
A lot of them struggle, after the Mobile Fortress incident. They notice that Professor Layton is struggling too… Wasn’t he involved in the case, somehow? Like on a personal level? And where is the Professor’s little apprentice…?
Eventually, news gets out about what happened ten years ago at the Institute of Polydimensional Physics. Layton’s students don’t find out all the details, but they find out about Claire Foley, a young scientist and (like them) a former Gressenheller student... Layton’s lost sweetheart.
When Layton turns up for class the next day, he’s surprised to find an empty lecture hall and an envelope on his desk. It contains two tickets and a letter, signed by all of his students:
“Dear Professor Layton,
Here are two tickets for you and your daughter to visit your apprentice in America. (A true gentleman never refuses a gift!) We’ve already informed Dean Delmona about your holiday…
Please, don’t worry about us. We’ll catch up when you get back.
Right now, we’re off to have a (civil) conversation with Bill Hawks.
Take care! -Your eager students’

@laytontheories and fortunately we have the new game that open a new door of possibilities at the saga 🥹 anyway I don't think that this is a " ending" but a new beginning with the new cast and the old cast all toghether in addition Marina is classified as Luke's partner and the fact that she is indicated as his wife is a self-proclamation that she has given herself but which most likely makes us understand that Luke proposed to her and that therefore she will certainly be his future wife but they are not married yet also because I highly doubt that he did not invite the professor to their wedding but surely he will have done something to prevent Marina from being expatriated back to America as Luke felt that this mystery would lead him to stay away for a long time and the only way for a foreigner to live in another region is to have a job at home or get engaged/married to a person from that region and acquire the other nationality.
Layton’s happy ending
While I have very mixed feelings about Kat’s anime, I really loved the last few minutes of the final episode.
I loved it because it shows Layton happy.
It’s no secret that Layton has had a terribly sad life. Losing his brother, friend and girlfriend to name a few tragedies.
But seeing Layton finally be happy and content with his life is great to see.
Even if Layton never appears again, even if he is never mentioned again, we can sleep peacefully knowing that he has gotten the happy ending he deserves.
Firstly, the obvious.
Tumblr media
Layton is reunited with his beloved daughter. He tried so hard to be a good father but missed out on a whole decade of her life. But now they’re together again and they can stay that way. I’m sure he’d be so proud of her accomplishments and would love to meet her friends.
Secondly, Layton gets to see Alfendi again.
Tumblr media
While not making a large appearance in the anime, Alfendi appearing at the end is very important. While there relationship is fairly estranged, look at Alfendi’s face. He’s smiling. He’s happy to finally see his father again. Despite everything, he still loves his father. Now he’s back, the two can bond and be a family again.
Layton also gets to be a part of Luke’s life again.
Tumblr media
Despite being close to child Luke, Layton never saw much of adult Luke. He didn’t even go to his wedding. But now they can be a team again. Im sure Luke had many adventures that Layton would love to hear about. Over a cup of tea perhaps.
Next, Layton has resumed teaching again.
Tumblr media
Layton’s days of mystery and adventure are finally behind him. He enjoyed solving puzzles and saving the day, but now he’s settled down comfortably. Rather then teaching large classrooms of adults, he’s content to share his knowledge with bright young children. Perhaps it reminds him of when he used to mentor young Luke.
Finally, a small detail but important nonetheless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Layton feels more comfortable removing his hat at home. His hat is a symbol of being a gentleman and he wears it to honor Claire. Perhaps, after being away from he’s family so long, he’s realised that he doesn’t need to be a gentleman. He just needs to be a father.
So no matter what happens in the future of the Layton series, Hershel is finally happy and that’s good enough for me.
