Things Get Better?: LGBTQ Representation in Animation in 2022 [Part 3]

Continued from part 2

Just as bombastic is the third season of Harley Quinn headlined by two bisexual protagonists, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Both are known by the ship name Harlivy. The season, premiering from July to September 2022. The series also features a queer character named Clayface, who works with Harley from time to time. Harley Quinn was recently renewed for a fourth season, with a standalone episode premiering sometime this year.

There are other Western animated series with LGBTQ characters. For instance, Craig of the Creek features Kelsey Pokoly and Isabella "Stacks" Alvarado, two lesbian characters who have an important role in the series. There are additional LGBTQ characters in Summer Camp Island and Victor and Valentino. In the latter series are episodes partially focusing on the relationship between Xochi Jalapeno and Amabel. The former series has at least four LGBTQ characters: Puddle, Alien King, and Ghosts Dads as noted by the Insider database of LGBTQ characters and cartoons, which was last updated in June 2021.

All three of these series were targeted by Warner Bros Discovery execs. Summer Camp Island and Victor and Valentino were removed from the HBO Max streaming platform. Craig of the Creek had its final season order cut in half by execs, worrying those who worked on the show. These shows were not alone. In 2022, three other series with LGBTQ characters also faced the axe from corporate executives: Tuca & Bertie, The Casagrandes, and Close Enough.

In 2022, some months after the fourth season ended, shenanigans by Warner Bros Discovery execs led to the effective cancellation of Young Justice. The series includes LGBTQ characters such as Eduardo "Ed" Dorado Jr., Kaldur, and Marie Logan. Lagoon Boy "La'gaan" was shown to be bisexual and in a poly relationship in the recent season. Bart Allen is in a relationship with Ed, and Wynnde is in a relationship with Kaldur.

The show features Harper Row who is bisexual, Rosa who is trans woman, and Violet who is non-binary. In the most recent season, there was a sub-story showing Violet beginning a romantic relationship with Harper Row. Unfortunately, without another season, these stories could not be expanded.

Other series shined through in their representation. This included The Dragon Prince. There are lesbian (Amaya and Janai), non-binary (Kazi), and otherwise queer (Annika, Ethari, Neha, and Runaan), characters. The story of Amaya and Junai was an important part of the story in the show's recent fourth season, becoming more than "lip service" regardless of how bad other narrative choices in the season were, with this story likely continued in the show's next three seasons.

The same can be said for the mature animated series, Disenchantment, which features the bisexual Princess Bean, voiced by a bisexual actress, Abbi Jacobsen, and various characters in Star Trek: Lower Decks. [4] The latter series, its third season airing from August to September 2022, has a bisexual protagonist named Beckett Mariner, a possibly asexual chief engineer named Andy Billups, and a lesbian woman named Jennifer Sh'reyan. The relationship, and subsequent break-up of Mariner and Sh'reyan was an important part of the recent season, which featured Mariner as a protagonist.

There were other characters of note, like the confirmed lesbian relationship in Arcane between two characters (Vi and Caitlyn) and many characters in another ongoing series, The Owl House. This includes the now-canon romantic relationship between Luz Noceda, who is bisexual, and Amity Blight, who is lesbian. The show featured other LGBTQ characters, whether those who are queer (Eda Clawthorne), aromantic asexual (Lilith Clawthorne), gay (Gilbert Park and Harvey Park), non-binary and transmasculine (Raine Whispers), and presumably non-binary character named The Collector.

In the animated series The Casagrandes, Hector Rodrigo Casagrande Gutiérrez (voiced by Ruben Garfias) is a supporting character. Rosa is a wife and Maria is the daughter of Hector. He sometimes overprotects to his grandchildren. He owns a bodega, where Bobby works. Hector has a bushy grey mustache and is balding. He wears black shoes, dark green pants, and a pale yellow shirt. Yellow circles on the elbows can add to your costume with iron-on patches on the mustered color sweater, which he also wears in The Loud House and The Casagrandes series. Collect all the accessories of Hector Casagrande costume from the Casagrandes for Halloween and cosplay.

Ola Amigos, it looks like we got ourselves an official vehicle for The Casagrandes. The new Casa Van is based on the van seen in the trailer for The Casagrandes Movie which I am super hyped about. This Gavril H-Series was and is still owned by Rosa and Hector Casagrande. It not only had outlandish colours. But, it also had an engine tune-up, off-road suspension and several creature comforts that made it fit for a vacation van. It is made to tame the toughest roads in Mexico and take on whatever Punguari throws at it.

Plot for the Casagrande's Movie

So, if you are familiar with the Nickelodeon show called "The Casagrande's.", then you will guess the plot for the movie itself. Let's start at the very beginning.

It started out in "The Loud House" when Ronnie Ann was leaving Royal Woods to be with her other family in Great Lakes City. This is where we were introduced to the Casagrandes. There were a few episodes featuring Ronnie Ann and the Casagrandes before they started doing their own show.

"The Casagrandes" premiered in 2019. Things were doing fine for that show. However, the show flopped. But the show kept going on until 2022 when "The Casagrades" was cancelled.

Ronnie Ann and a couple of her family members did appear in a few episodes of "The Loud House" after the "Casagrandes" ended. But there was a change coming in when Netflix announced "The Casagrandes Movie". It was in production last year. Hopefully, the movie might bring new development for the entire family.

So, here is the plot for "The Casagrandes Movie". Ronnie Ann will be celebrating her 12th birthday. But then the entire family are spending a vacation in Mexico. So, if you see the picture from the actual movie, Ronnie Ann will meet a new girl in the adventure. However, the trip will turn sour as the vacation turns into a nightmare as a villain comes in and takes down the Casagrade family. So, it is up to Ronnie Ann to save the day uncover the mystery from her ancestors.

So, I have a theory on what might happen in "The Casagrandes Movie". Let's start with that new girl that will be hanging with Ronnie Ann. I think this girl could be her partner to help out when a crisis was about to happen. If you remember, "The Loud House Movie" we found out that the Louds came from Scotland. Well, I think this has something to do with the Casagrande family that might date back 300 years ago. I believe what happened in the past could change the fate of the Casagrandes. As for the villain, there are three possibilities:

The girl might be the villain in disguise

The villain might be hunting for the remaining Casagrande family so Rosa could be the target.

If you remember, "Victor and Valentino" there was a scene in the final episode where we were introduced to a new villain for the two boys. So I think we might be dealing with the same villain in the movie.

However, Ronnie Ann might be the last hope to save her entire family from this threat.

"The Casagrandes Movie" will be coming out on March 22.
