NAME: Aurora 'Rory' Young
PRONOUNS: She/Her
FACECLAIM: Hailee Steinfeld
AGE: 25
SPECIES: Witch
RANK: Lieutenant
OCCUPATION: R&D at The Marketplace
BIOGRAPHY:
Aurora ‘Rory’ Young was born to a witch mother and human father. While the coven wasn’t pleased with her mother’s choice to dilute the bloodline even further, by the time Rory was eight, it was clear that she was gifted. Rory was a science and math prodigy, building her own robots and figuring out solutions to complex questions beyond even the adults around her. She wasn’t great at spell-casting—the poor girl was terrible at it—but she had a mind for tinkering and what she couldn’t conjure with magic, she could mix with her growing love for mechanics and science and build entirely new magical objects.
While all it took was blood and training to make a witch powerful, the dedication and willpower to discover and invent new things to make up for one’s weaknesses was wholly human.
In exchange for the coven’s acceptance of her father into their fold, even going so far as to employ him at their facilities, her parents willingly let Rory work with older witches in the coven, the ones that specialized in research and development. She would juggle her job at the lab during the evenings while attending school during the day. It was a lot of any child but Rory enjoyed every moment. It kept a gifted child like her occupied and challenged. It also helped that her parents worked in the same building. They loved her dearly and showered her with attention and affection whenever they had time.
Everything seemed to be going perfectly for the witch. After she graduated high school (early), she didn’t even bother to go to college, knowing that the coven would keep her gainfully employed so long as they existed. She continued to work for them and had helped them make great strides in their research, working her way up to the Lieutenant rank even though she couldn’t cast many spells that lasted longer than a few seconds. Although she knew that the coven was causing harm to people generally, she buried her head in the ground and focused on the science and magic, deeming the less savoury aspects of the business none of her concern.
However, it couldn’t last that way forever.
Rory couldn’t believe, despite all the crime and dangers her family surrounded themselves in, the one that ruined it was tragically human. Rory had been tinkering away as usual when she received a call from the local hospital. She was an emergency contact—her parents’ emergency contact. A hit and run, they said. Rory didn’t really hear the rest, her phone dropping in shock when the doctors told her they did all they could. And just like that, the most important people in her life was gone.
With the heaviest heart, Rory was forced to deal with the aftermath of some other idiot’s decision. She was angry and hated the world, but still carried on knowing it was what her parents’ would have wanted. She handled her parents’ affairs with grace, smiling through her inner turmoil as the people whose lives were touched by them sent their condolences. It was all too much and Rory just wanted the world to swallow her whole.
Still, she wasn’t alone. Rory had the coven to rely on for support and they took her in like the family they had become to her. While it didn’t make coming home to an empty house any easier, it at least gave Rory some place to spend all her hours, allowing her to work away at what always made her happy: magical objects. She continued to dedicate all her time—and by some margins, her life—to the cause. If there was a sudden explosion in the witch’s compound, it was safe to say Rory was behind it, but she never created enough damage for them to worry too much….yet.
If Rory isn’t at work, she is tinkering away at home, working on personal projects that don’t benefit their organization so much as they just seemed fun to her. As far as she was concerned, so long as her hands and mind were busy, she couldn’t dwell on the loss and that was a pit she definitely didn’t want to jump in to. Part of her is worried that, if she allowed herself to find shelter in the darkness, she wouldn’t have the patience for human laws to inflict justice on the man that had taken her parents from her—not when she had the power to do it herself.

you actually have to take a class on rory gilmore and write an extensive thesis paper on the value of her character arc centering on making juvenile mistakes because she’s a young woman coming into her own for the first time and she’s not a saint or a demon but somewhere in between because she’s a complex person with flaws and positive qualities! yeah and once you pass the class you get a certificate and that’s when you’re allowed to talk about rory gilmore

By the end of the 1950s Rory Storm and The Hurricanes were Liverpool’s top band. The great peculiarity of Storm’s character was that he spoke with a severe stammer, which always disappeared when he was performing. A flamboyant Teddy Boy, he had a vast blond quiff that he would ostentatiously comb on stage: in old black-and-white photographs he seems to be built entirely of silver. He was an athletic man, a natural extrovert, given to daredevil stage leaps (he once broke a leg jumping from a balcony for a photograph). He’d wave the mike stand around and, strangely, pour lemonade over himself.
I’m told he was once apprehended by a railway porter on Bootle station for writing ‘I Love Rory’ on a wall. The other groups worshipped him; George Harrison longed to join the Hurricanes but was told he was too young.
Rory found a local drummer, another refugee from skiffle, called Richard Starkey. He lured the boy with promises of a summer season at Butlins holiday camp in Pwllheli, where each week brought a fresh coach-load of excitable girls. In line with the Hurricanes’ big-thinking policies the drummer was allocated a new name, Ringo Starr. (This era would be lovingly re-created in a 1973 him featuring Ringo with Billy Fury and David Essex, That’ll Be the Day.) Starr’s reputation grew so fast in his time with Rory, that he was eventually poached by the Beatles to replace Pete Best. <…> Gerry Marsden, like Ringo, came from the docklands of Dingle. He got a job on the railways, he played skiffle and then got himself a beat group, the Pacemakers, who served their time in Hamburg. They were game entertainers, these boys, who could play anything in that week’s Hit Parade if it’s what the crowd wanted. Having a piano-player made them a bit different, too, and offered them some range. Gerry had a funny way of holding his guitar high on his chest: it was so he could see his fingers.
Brian Epsten watched them in action at the Cavern, and saw in Gerry something of the same star potential he perceived in the Beatles and Cilia Black. He brought George Martin to see them play in Birkenhead, and they were duly signed to an EMI label, Columbia.
Once in the studio they were more compliant than Lennon and McCartney, and readily agreed to cover the song, ‘How Do You Do It?’, that the Beatles had rejected. Good thing, too. It got them to Number 1 straight out of the traps, and a month before the Beatles at that.
Paul McCartney would recall much later: ‘The hrsj: really senous threat to us that we felt was Gerry and the Pacemakers. When it came time for Mersey Beat to have a poll as to who was the most popular group we certainly bought and filled in a lot of forms, with very funny names , . . I’m not saying it was a fix, but it was a high-selling issue, that.’ <…> …Cilia’s first job in show business was to make the tea in the Cavern office. She was in fact the quintessential Scouser: a docker’s daughter from the Catholic enclave Scotland Road. In the family parlour stood a piano from the Epsteins’ North End Music Stores, just up the road.
When the 60s started she was a typist in town who spent her lunch hours watching the beat groups at the Cavern, where she picked up some spare-time work. Soon she was to be found on stage as well, performing guest spots with Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes, the Big Three and Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. (Sometimes she would duet with Ringo on his big number ‘Boys’, but turned down a chance to go with the band to Hamburg.)
One night at the Iron Door her girlfriends urged the Beatles to give Cilia a go. ‘OK Cyril,’ John Lennon said. ‘Just to shut your mates up.’ She sang Sam Cooke’s version of ‘Summertime’, and her career was on its way. It was Lennon who recommended ‘Cyril’ to Epstein. ‘I fancied Brian like mad,’ she recalled. ‘He was gorgeous. He had the Cary Grant kind of charisma, incredibly charming and shy. He always wore a navy-blue cashmere overcoat and a navy spotted cravat. I know now it was a Hermes but then I still knew it was expensive.’ She failed an early audition for him, backed by the Beatles, but he saw her again at the Blue Angel and changed his mind.

We're learning about grouse hunting together!
I was really undecided on whether I wanted to hunt with Rory for realsies because I don't have a shotgun and I don't really care to get a shotgun (I have a gun license from my time up north). I have a small air rifle and a tactical slingshot (both legal for hunting small game in my area) so I've been taking those for walks in hunting areas, along with all my permits and stuff, just to see what we see.
This grouse woods is in the same corner as my swamp, just a different part of the rec area. You can legally hunt small game during the open season with dogs with some restrictions (certain distance from the parking, some trails close for hunting on a rotational basis for maintenance, etc.) but it's not terribly popular so it's a really good area to learn. We are looking for ruffed grouse and rabbit, both of which are super common out here.
With pointing dogs like britts, you generally don't want to shoot any game unless they're pointing steady (*except when doing gun conditioning, but that's a specific training set up) - it makes sense because a shot bird is the ultimate reward and you want to make sure you're reinforcing the behaviour you want, which is usually a safe steady point. Rory isn't pointing steady yet so there's really not much for me to do on these walks besides reinforce good manners (recall, how far she ranges, etc.).
There's a really well known saying in pointing dogs, which is wild birds make bird dogs. Wild birds flush (fly away) much more reliably than farmed birds so the chances of a dog catching a wild bird is really minimal compared to farmed birds. It's super important to get young bird dogs on wild birds as much as possible so they learn all the important skills: how to navigate terrain, what habitat holds birds, what each bird species smells like, how far they can range, and most importantly, that they need a person to actually get a bird.
(Most of these skills can be taught with planted birds in training, but planted birds may be more habituated to people and dogs so they might not flush reliably. Once pointing dogs learn that they can catch birds themselves, it's much harder to foster a strong stop and point. You might see people using these tip ups, which protect the training bird from the dog. You'll often see training dogs on long lines (called check cords) or with a flank collar to reinforce not getting too close to the bird, but you have to phase those out quickly so the dog doesn't become dependent on them. You also have to be really careful with scent trails when setting up planted birds or you might end up with a dog that follows your scent instead of looking for birds organically. And of course, you have to train without birds sometimes so the dog doesn't get discouraged about not finding birds quickly because sometimes there just aren't birds out there. Lots to consider when setting up training!)
Anyway I've been trying to get Rory out on wild birds as much as possible (with the caveat that we don't run wild birds during nesting season) so we're wandering the grouse woods lately. My early recall training is really paying off because she's been super reliable in terms of good manners, it's wonderful to see!
We've been out four times (1-2 hours each) so far since the season opened. The first two times we're mostly just a pleasant walk in the woods, Rory didn't really know what we were doing so she was just vibing (THIS IS TOTALLY FINE, SHE'S NEW TO THIS). We had a couple chance grouse encounters and I could see the wheels turning, I encouraged her to sniff around where the grouse were sitting before they flew off and I watched her start to connect the dots.
(It's important to remember that dogs don't know what they're looking for until you show them. Most bird dogs are naturally birdy, but they don't know which birds are good and which birds are boring! You have to show them which birds you care about - this is easiest if you can run with an experienced hunting dog, but you can do it alone like I am by making a big deal about any interest in the "correct" birds.)
The last time we went out to the grouse woods, she did a couple of really nice whip-arounds when she caught scent she liked and followed scent off the trail I was walking! This is the behaviour I want to see so it was awesome to watch it start to click! She trailed a moose (don't want that, she found some moose pee to roll in so whatever), a pileated woodpecker (again, don't want that but it was cool to see), and two separate grouse. The first was on the wrong side of the fence so I couldn't do anything about it but she held a really nice point (the photo) and I gave her a ton of chicken and praise for it. The second was a quick point but it flushed really far away so there was no finding it again. Both birds weren't visible when she found them, they were true scent points and she was strategically looking for them so that was super cool!
She's still in heat and super sensitive right now so I wouldn't shoot over her anyway, but I'm getting pretty accurate with my slingshot so I'm hoping we can connect on something this fall - both for her pointing steady and me aiming properly. She gets more steady and more sure of herself every time we go out so it's only a matter of time!
#rory borealis#about aurora#bird dog training#dogblr#this is a long one!#its pretty rambly about my thoughts about grouse hunting training so far#one real issue im having right now is how gear-sensitive rory is#she will happily wear a regular collar (or an ecollar - shes conditioned to wearing it but i dont use it on her yet)#but i cant put a bell or a belly protector on her without her freaking out#it makes her super shut down and upsetti and it sucks#ultimately its not a big deal because she ranges appropriately and i can have eyeballs on her at all times#but i would like her to wear an orange belly protector for these kinds of outings because its hard on her body#i have to revisit gear desensitization once shes done her heat#ive never had a dog that was this avoidant of gear tbh#on the note about gear:#rory has exceptional recall especially for a young bird dog#you'll notice im running her naked without an ecollar or gps collar#if youre following along and want to train your dog for grouse hunting PLEASE use appropriate gear for your dog#dont ruin the privilege of running dogs on public land by not having reliable control over your loose dog#i really dont gatekeep most of the areas i run my dog - i am so so happy to give local people recommendations on where to run#but please please please dont be the person who ruins it for us#i dont say this to be rude like live your dream#but consider the ethics and the privilege of having access to these areas and how easily they could be taken away#(sorry thats a rant but you get it)

au where wille's family is a big acting dynasty family, and he's never loved it but he's having a hard time getting out, and he and erik have a bit more of an age gap than in canon, and during one big fight with his parents it comes out that they only had a second son because they wanted someone who could play a younger version of Erik's characters in flashbacks in his movies or TV shows (and indeed this is a big part of how Wille has been cast) and he spirals further than he'd already been spiralling

Concept in my head, also writing prompt
so, i have an AU.
Maybe like, an alternate earth that like, Flash Barry crosses into
mayb not
where snart became a cop, for whatever reason, but still has some of his jaded personality- he doesn't think cops are perfect. full stop. But he is trying to make the streets a safer place, at least
And Barry in this world, ends up in the criminal sphere, and he is partners with Mick. But not quite the same master thief type thing that Mick and Snart were in the main universe, tho def illegal measures taken nonetheless
With Barry and Snart being the same kind of rivals they were in the show, but get this
Barry is still the one trying to "save" Snart, from his issues, while not addressing his own. While Snart keeps the line with Barry open because he sees that Barry is trying to do good, just in not so good ways, and sees Barry as someone worth not giving up on just yet
Anyway idk, just. Thinking about it
