thinking about romanced neve’s comments on tear stone island…

“just…find a way out. can you do that, Trouble?” is neve gallus choosing to put her faith in rook and how they always seem to claw their way past trouble and danger. it comes out clumsy because she’s not used to doing that. she trusts that rook is rock steady and reliable and has been in the past and can be in the present but in this moment she’s trying to believe that rook will be there in the future.

(how she must have wrestled with herself the whole time. torn between her heart and her head as per usual, neve chooses a compromise. she won’t say “i love you”—not yet. did she tell herself that she would say it after? did she not let herself think it at all?)

neve offers an olive branch here—i want to believe that we can find our way out. tell me we can find our way out. and of course rook delivers. “i can if you can.”

and then bellara is taken by elgar’nan himself.

and then someone dies stopping ghilan’nain.

and then rook disappears.

and then minrathous, her city and home, is taken and blighted.

neve gallus quite literally lost everything in such a short period of time that it’s a wonder she was functional at all in the weeks where rook was missing and so much was just wrong.

but then rook comes back.

and then they find bellara.

and then the blight is killed in minrathous along with elgar’nan.

she’s proven completely right and then completely wrong nearly immediately.

(and even when she only has rook back, she tries again. to believe and let herself feel rather than fighting against it the whole time. because rook makes her feel brave, and rook died, and rook broke out of a prison built to hold gods.)

Rook / Neve Headcanons!!

Ive been obsessed with Rook/Neve for the last month and wanted to share some of my Headcanons!! (I'll always accept more if anyone else has some ofc! the more the better!)

Rook / Neve Headcanons Part 1

(My)Rook goes by They/Them and She/her, has no real preference though

They are often very personal about their relationship, Neve more so than Rook and she loves that they respect that. Doesn’t stop Rook from being bratty around others unfortunately 

From the moment they shared their first kiss on the docks, Neve spent every single night in Rook’s room. Only ever cuddling and making out before falling asleep. [Until yknow when]

Neve absolutely loves marking her territory in very visual spots. Rook makes sure her love bits are out of the sight because she respects Neve’s professional image.

Rook will deny it if ever brought up/asked but she is always the little spoon. She finds comfort in being held, finds it helps her sleep better. [She got some of the best sleep in her life the first night she and Neve spent the night together.

Rook often shuts down/over stimulates, especially after a mission. Neve often helps her by holding her in her arms tightly or just talking about old cases that she solved while Rook leans her head on her shoulder.

Neve loves Rook's hair. No matter the occasion, sitting down next to each during a team meeting, just hanging out, making out, sleeping etc, her fingers are always entangled in Rook's hair.

Rook loves Wintersend[Christmas basically], Neve doesn’t understand it, but finds it cute

Rook will always bring home stray animals and Neve has to convince her that the can’t keep them all

Neve has a morning skincare routine with a lot of expensive products. Rook will mess with them, not know what any of it is, when Neve isn’t around. Neve knows that Rook does this and doesn't mind.

When Neve first met Rook, she never had a specific brand of perfume she used but the moment she found out Rook loved the smell of Vanilla, she found the best, most expensive brand and wore it exclusively. Rook always smells like strawberry cheesecake because of her body wash.[MAU She bought one bottle from Bath & body works and never looked back]

Rook is surprisingly the better influence with children, while Neve accidentally drops cuss words and the kids learn them.

Neve tends to talk constantly about the books she was currently reading, Rook listens to her even if it's the seventh time that day

Neve is always up before Rook, and on the odd day when Rook wakes first, she’ll prepare breakfast and her favourite coffee for Neve. [The odd time Lucanis pushes Rook away to finish because wtf does Rook know about a healthy breakfast] 

When Rook tends to ramble on about stupid stuff, Neve will kiss her just to shut her up

Will constantly say ‘Huh’ to anything Neve says when she's bored because she knows it will piss her off

One time Neve called Rook ‘chuckles’ and Rook broke down sobbing. Neve had never seen her girlfriend like this before and was terrified.

Rook tends to show their affection more often when they’re alone but doesn’t complain when Neve shows her affection in public

Rook’s love language is acts of service while Neve is more words of affirmation and physical touch

 Rook will often times zone out when Neve talks, just staring at her with giant heart eyes

When Neve is neck deep in a case and she’s too busy to come home/talk to Rook, Rook will send Wisps to deliver lil love notes / In a modern setting, she’ll send their pet cat 

Modern NeveRook have a orange tabby cat named Hermie

Rook on more than one occasion, has fallen asleep while hugging Neve

Neve was the first of the group to realize Rook couldn’t swim/was afraid of water. She is SUPER protective of them whenever some, most likely Taash, tries to tease her about it or pull Rook towards water. She once blasted Taash like thirty feet with her Ice into a lake for trying to force Rook into the lake.

(My)Rook hates fish. Absolutely cannot stand the taste or smell but will never not get Neve some grilled fish from her favourite spot when she knows Neve is neck deep in work, and she knows she hasn’t eaten and won’t step away to get something. 

Rook’s parents LOVE Neve. They adore her so much that they call her more than their own daughter just to talk. 

Before they had gotten together, Rook had constantly flirted with Isabella whenever they were in Rivian with Taash. It pissed Neve off more when the Pirate would return the flirtation and purposely make it more explicit because she knew that Neve had a crush on Rook. [It was her way to push Neve to admit her feelings]

These are the first ones that I've come up with and will definitely add to! I hope you guys like them!!!

Trying to get back into writing fanfic so here's a RookNeve snippet:

“I think we have a problem,” Viola said after bending to get through the door to Neve’s Docktown apartments and then straightening up again. Her horns, which swept back and up in a smooth arc were currently scraping the ceiling.

            “Ah,” Neve replied, hiding a smile behind her hand, “I think we do. For now, maybe sit down?” She gestured towards an armchair, then noticing it was covered in overflowing notes, gestured towards the bed which, with the curtains drawn back, was just visible in the sleeping alcove in the far corner.

            “How forward Ms Gallus!” Viola exclaimed, as she made her hunched way over to where she had been directed, swerving around piles of research as she went. It was a modestly sized living space, the main room separated from the sleeping alcove by a curtain, space for a hotplate and a fire along one wall, and another curtained off alcove which Viola assumed was the washroom. One might call the space cozy; the cluttered detritus of Neve’s casework however tipped the descriptor instead to chaotic.

            “I’m sorry Trouble, I didn’t even think about the ceiling height,” Neve followed in Viola’s footsteps around the mess, coming to stand between the other woman’s legs where she was now sat on the edge of the bed. Viola’s hands came up to circle around her back.

            “Honestly? I’m more concerned about the amount of notes you have that I’ve been roped into transporting to those new offices Rana has rented for the two of you.”

            “’Offices’ sounds too official, it’s a backroom somewhere at best,” Neve replied as she let her hands wander into Viola’s long black hair, twirling silken strands of it between her fingers.

            “And,” Neve continued, “pretty sure you’re included in the ‘offices’.”

            “My name wasn’t on the ad in the paper,” Viola said, tilting her head as if to invite Neve down for a kiss. Neve acquiesced for a peck before pulling back.

            “I’ll tell Rana to put in a new ad,” she said.

see the funny thing is it is my rookanis girlie who doesn't care that neve and lucanis are flirting, except maybe it's a little awkward to watch these two flirt. dolores mercar has slept with neve (the kids call that a situationship) and has thought of sleeping with lucanis. so like can she join actually?? meanwhile it's my rookneve girlie who would probably start barking if lucanis even dares to be be close to neve. ask florentina de riva if she cares about treviso again.

from “you know me” “do i?” to “the neve i know cares more about dock town and the whole damn world” “is that what you know?” to “you know me—i’m trouble”

from “trouble’s not always a bad thing” to “you know…i think you might be trouble” to “have i told you you’re trouble?”

from the numerous iterations of “i’m here for you” to “the gods can break that promise for you” to “before we go…i love you”

from “and if it’s already too late?” “don’t tell me you’re a lost cause” “i might be” to “i waited. finding you was a lost cause, but i would catch myself waiting.”

something something something the first case you help neve with, she offers rook an out when things get serious. the next time—with higher stakes—she doesn’t. an unhardened neve tells elek that “we’ll go in alone.” neve has always worked alone—but now she includes a second person in that term. she trusts rook. enough that she knows they won’t back out or back down when the venatori are involved and people are in danger.

and that’s the straw that broke the emotionally repressed camel’s back, i think.

(she tries to backtrack, of course. and it doesn’t work. rook will never not try to be there to help, even if they’re not from dock town.)

i imagine neve after this case/mission absolutely losing her damn mind. now aelia—possibly the most dangerous person she’d ever caught—was back, and neve had something personal to lose again. horrible timing, those pesky warm feelings whenever rook was around. it was easier to stop bastards like aelia from hurting the people of dock town when no one could find your weak spots. and rook was one hell of a weak spot.

(bonus points for neve bursting into bellara’s room and interrupting her working on a magical project of some kind to start infodumping about her not-so-newfound feelings for rook and bellara. eats. it. up. and is so excited both to be neve’s officially sanctioned confidante and to hear about the pairing that she’d secretly been shipping in her head since day one of joining the team. once neve gets the anxiety mostly out of her system and goes to make herself a cup of horribly made coffee, bellara immediately starts writing fanfiction about her and rook.)
